Wait are you the creator of the Dr Stone His Dark Materials AU? Cool! If so can you tell me what's your inspiration for each characters Daemons?
yes that’s me!! Thank you so much for asking!!! Word Dump ahead
male lion -> Tsuakasa: Inagaki did the work for me, lol. Actually, I like the idea of lions symbolizing a sort of wildness and authority (very "king of the jungle") which fits early manga Tsukasa, but like real lion behavior being pretty chill (like most big carnivores) and just wanting to like hang out with their pride which fits later manga Tsukasa.
albino female king cobra -> Senku: Kinda of three hold reasoning here. In Western mythology, snakes are seen as being teachers of wisdom, specifically mortal wisdom (like obvs Adam and Eve, but also the snakes on the rod of Asclepius). King cobra meanwhile are associated with rulers in certain parts of India. Finally, albino snakes is about the myth of Bai Suzhen from China which is about a snake that gained power/cultivation then used it to repay a human she fell in love with; interestingly the snake in that story has been interpreted as both evil (for going against natural order of the world) and good (for her devotion to the human she loved), which is a fun metaphor for Senku upsetting the status quo (be both Tsukasa's 'live with nature', and the Whyman's 'keep humans mostly statues/stone age'). Finally, I picked a name in mandarin for her bc I like the idea of one of Senku's birth parents being chinese, soley bc there is a VERY stupid pun you can make with 月 (moon, month) radical and the⺼(flesh, body) radical often being written identically (so moon [a space rock] = flesh, just like petri beam).
female dog -> Taiju: his himbo engery is of the charts. (also is a nice helpful good boy who reminds me of a golden retriever)
male orbweaver bird -> Yuzu: I was going to do a spider for her actually, bc of all the cool mythology world-wide connecting spiders and weavers but it turns out mostly female spiders make webs, so I switched to a type of bird that makes really cool nest.
female lion -> Kohaku: Inagaki did all the work on this for me pt.2. She's powerful, very dedicated to her family, and also someone who's not afraid of putting in an enormous amount of effort (since female lions are the ones the hunt).
male Racoon-dog -> Chrome: Intelligent but also a little prone to mischief. Chrome likes collecting things, he's not afraid to totally go and do his own thing or accomplish his goals in his own way! Also (and this is more related to regular raccoons), they are very smart and good at opening trash cans which fits chrome somehow.
Male calico cat -> Gen: This is 50% bc gen exists in my head as the meme "butternut is a master of psychological manipulation", and 50% bc male calico's (despite looking normal) are incredibly rare bc the mechanism of calico coloring typically depends on having 2 X chromosomes. This is fun bc Gen's def the type to play around with gender a bit. Also Gen has always has a lot of color variation (black/white hair, purple in outfit even in b4 cloth got reinvented), so he deserves a colorful daemon.
Female hyena -> Hyouga: The natural enemy of lions, lol. Also they both have a very fun aesthetic and a reputation for being scary but funny.
Male lunar moth -> Ruri: famous for only living long enough to find a mate and pass away. But also a creature that is good at being both beautiful but also very low-key and subtle.
bonus: Not mentioned in story but exist in my heart
Ryuusui: Female Peregrine falcon (only the fastest bird alive for the world's greedest man)
Byakuya: female crow (smart and wise, but prone to pranks)
Lillian: male mockingbird (she's from SE US, so it's a given)
Amaryllis: male betta fish (beautiful and ready to fight!)
Dr. Xeno: female Arizona bark scoprion (did you know scorpions are actually fairly good mentors parents and will carry their young on their backs?)
Stanley: female cotton-mouth (aka the venomous snake that is the bane of SE US waterways)

(A brief explanation of daemons, where they come from, and what they are can be found at this link.)
.
.
.
.
Ichigo’s daemon settles early. There, in the shock of his mother’s death, her golden retriever daemon Alonso nowhere to be seen, Serafin keens, a bloodcurdling mourning sound torn from her throat as he sits numb in the rain.
He doesn’t know how long it is until her anguished shrieking attracts help, but when the paramedics arrive, take his pulse, ask his daemon to change shape (a standard procedure to check for shock in children), she flits about his head in chaotic distress and refuses to listen. The paramedics try to calm her down—one of them has got a golden warbler daemon, who keeps pace with Serafin and murmurs at her in soothing tones as she circles and circles and circles—but it’s no use, and when she attempts to shift, but can’t, it only makes the situation worse.
Ichigo—Ichigo—she thinks at him desperately, and it’s only then that Ichigo realises what the sick feeling at the bottom of his stomach is. He feels a tugging at his chest, but it’s short-lived, like running abruptly into a wall—nothing like the full-on swoop that usually accompanies a change in Serafin’s shape, and he knows this is it for them.
“I can’t—I can’t—“ he tells the paramedics who are poking and prodding him, helping him up, loading him into the back of the ambulance—“I can’t, I can’t, it’s my fault, I can’t—“
“His daemon,” one of them says shortly, and the others all stop, looking at each other with fearful, understanding eyes.
Shock, they murmur, and Ichigo hears the voices around him, muffled as if through a veil but with odd patches of lucidity: settle… early sometimes, if… trauma… nine?? I’ve never heard…. So early… too early.
Poor boy, he hears, and decides to hear no more.
Mechanically, he lets the paramedics handle him as they will: they lay him on a stretcher, wrap him up in the blankets tight. He clutches Serafin close to his chest, and he can feel her tiny heart beat over his; her small warmth does nothing to dispel the chill that has settled over them both. He’s still as the grave, but Serafin is trembling.
Settling was supposed to be a joyous event, a homecoming; it was looking at a piece of your soul and, in a moment of clarity, understanding who you were and who you were going to become and being better for it. It was not supposed to be this, this forced choice before he had ever considered what shape she might take, shocked into it by grief and guilt and frozen in a form that will always remind him of the pure agony of tonight.
Nightingale. Serafin’s a nightingale, with a high sweet voice and a small sleek body and wings feathered by plumes delicate as gossamer, the last form Kurosaki Masaki ever saw her in.
Shaking, weeping, her thoughts an incoherent jumble in his mind, Serafin presses herself closer to Ichigo’s body, and the two of them begin their long vigil.
His father is far more understanding than he has any right to be, him and his rangy lion-daemon Lyrani with their understanding eyes and understanding hugs and understanding silences, and it’s more than Ichigo can bear. He wishes they would yell at him; he wishes they would cast him out. It’s all his fault, all of it, he’s the one who pulled mom away from the centre of their house; but the most they show in front of him is a quick grim tightening of the mouth, as though they’d somehow been expecting the news and the paramedics with her bloody corpse is only a confirmation of the worst. He wants to rail at them—don’t you understand, don’t you get it, mom is gone, why are you so calm—but he knows he doesn’t even have the right to do that, not when he’s the reason she’s gone in the first place.
It almost destroys him to watch his sisters crumble at the news, barely five and with their daemons still shapeshifting like quicksilver; Karin’s Zenka shifting so fast he’s almost a blur, Yuzu’s Inari trying valiantly to hold onto Alonso’s golden retriever shape but slipping around the edges so that every so often he’d have horns or scales or wings. But none of them blame him for it, either, and when they come to him for comfort, crying into his shirt and Serafin’s feathers, he pats them awkwardly around their shoulders and doesn’t meet the eyes that are too full of the trust and love he doesn’t deserve.
I killed her, he thinks, and Serafin agrees:
We killed her.
“I’m sorry it had to be this way, son,” his dad tells him a few days afterwards, and Ichigo doesn’t ask how he knows—he just does. Lyrani looks at him with her steady gold eyes and does something Ichigo only remembers from his earliest years: she pads up to him, footfalls soft on the carpet, and nuzzles her head into his cheek, licking him from chin to forehead.
He used to giggle at this, he recalls, pretending disgust and running away so that she’d chase him throughout the house. Now, he runs away for a different reason: the sunlight on her golden fur, so much like Alonso’s, and he knows it’s his fault that he’ll never see Lyrani curl up with another warm body in a patch of sunlight on lazy afternoons.
We killed her, he thinks, in litany and in time with his feet hitting the pavement, and the rush of the bloated monsoon-season river beside him does not stop to tell him otherwise.
Three months later, in a hospital corridor, another boy’s daemon settles; early, far too early for it to approximate anything close to normal. The small green snake winds her body up the boy’s arm, and he clutches her closer to his chest. In the spillover of the stark white operation lights, what scant colour they have bleaches out to a ghostly transparency, so much so that he can no longer tell which of them is living and which of them the corpse.
At least until the first incision is made. Then, the blood: not spurting and fresh and vital-red, but even more horrible in its viscosity; the dead colour of it, like the mudslide that had happened by the riverbank only a few days ago. The boy wets his lips and tries one last time.
“Dad?”
The calico housecat by the foot of the operation table doesn’t stir. His father only spares him a single glance; one that pierces through boy and daemon, rooting them in place. They can’t look away now.
The two of them watch the dissection of their mother, the entire, bloody thing, clinging to each other all the while.

What about the best girls for the meme: Yuzu, Masumi and Serena?
mmmm… good girls… (and Serena)
Yuzu:
A: Yuzu’s favourite flavour is strawberry, but cherry is a close second
B: Yuzu’s first fan smack was @ Yuuya, since she got it for her birthday, and Yuuya kept trying to grab it to see it. a well deserved smacko
C: Yuzu is very shaky post canon. people calling her name randomly or touching her without her noticing sets her into panic. after being pursued for weeks, what was to be expected?
D:Yuzu keeps in touch with all her friends across dimensions. Asuka, the Hogan-Webers, Yuugo and Rin, Serena, everyone.Whether via phone, letter, or in person, she tries her best to stick together.
Masumi:
A: She has a pet rock named Jade. It is an igneous.
B: Masumi can arm wrestle well, and will take on anyone. Her tussle with Gongenzaka ended in a tie, since Masumi couldn’t budge his giant hand, and Gongenzaka didn’t want to hurt her
C: Masumi is constantly afraid of Yuzu rejecting her, whether it be her whole trans thing, or just that they had a bad experience in the past, or whatever. She eventually doesn’t know how to approach her, even for normal conversation. Yuzu gets worried, but Masumi won’t even look at her.
D: The Bracelet Girls always have Masumi around like she is one of them. The others love her and her deck. pretty pretty deck
Serena:
A: Serena had a pet cat, calico, named Mr. Sprinkles. Male calicos are SUPER rare btw.
B: Serena is always ready to throw down. ESPECIALLY with Shun. As an apology for being hasty with the XYZ, Serena had a tussle with Shun. Reiji didn’t approve but couldn’t stop the two
C: Serena has a lot of dreams of carding people. The souls in their eyes diminishing as they become paper. She knows she’s changed, but is changing enough? She potentially hurt so many people. So many people that she can’t apologize to.
D: Serena and Yuuri used to bunk together back at Academia before Serena ran away with Barrett. Since Yuuri was busy capturing Ruri and Rin, Yuuri had no idea where Serena went

Bookshelf Briefs 1/21/19
Anonymous Noise, Vol. 12 | By Ryoko Fukuyama | Viz Media – Lots of things going on in this new volume. First of all, it’s a new year, and that means there’s potentially new club members—despite the band giving an absolutely wretched performance to the school. I’ll be honest, An feels a bit like she’s being introduced in order to be able to pair off one of the spares, but so far I’m pretty fine with that. Meanwhile, Nino seems to be maturing a little bit, but her relationship with Momo is still touch and go, and both Momo and Yuzu have a definite need for it to be Nino and only Nino who sings their songs. Yuzu is finally back towards the end of this book, but it feels right that he was away—the space has moved the plot forward. Not quite sure where yet, but forward. – Sean Gaffney
The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Vol. 13 | By Aya Shouoto | Viz Media – The most recent story arc of The Demon Prince of Momochi House starts off with a literal bang—after being shot by the villainous Kasha, Himari finds her spirit forcibly separated from her physical body. Understandably, it’s a dangerous state in which to exist, especially with the number of malicious ayakashi that pass through and by Momochi house. This certainly isn’t the first time that Himari has been in trouble, and I’m doubly certain that it won’t be last, but neither is she a helpless heroine. Himari’s underlying strength often seems to be overshadowed by the astonishing abilities of the other characters in The Demon Prince of Momochi House, supernatural and otherwise. In this particular case, however, Himari must not only save herself but the ones she loves, too—she’s not the ultimate target of Kasha’s schemes and many of the people she would normally rely on for help can’t. – Ash Brown
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 3 | By Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court | Viz Media – To my surprise, this volume mostly seems to dial back the main plot in favor of character development with Koichi. But that’s fine, as these are solid chapters and help show why he’s being The Crawler despite not being a licensed hero. It also gives us more attention devoted to Captain Celebrity, the American All Might who is a selfish publicity hound and basically awful. And much to my surprise, it has some excellent backstory of why heroes came to be and why most people with powers aren’t heroes. It’s fascinating and makes sense. I also like the new girl, though her overly wide mouth makes me think of Tsuyu. This side series is growing on me. – Sean Gaffney
My Monster Secret, Vol. 14 | By Eiji Masuda | Seven Seas – I’m not sure whether I’m ready for actual drama in My Monster Secret, a series that still works best when it’s being as funny as possible. But they’ve been to the future, and it’s hinted it’s not a happy one for everyone involved. Sometimes this is played for comedy, as with Shiho finding that her future husband is the most annoying of “those three guys,” but there’s also a hint that Asahi and Youko are not going to get together. That said, when the series IS doing humor, it’s still pretty hilarious, even when the punchline is “please admire my awesome ass.” We’re clearly going to be dragging this on for at least a few more volumes, and may also be adding to the “I’m in love with Asagi” harem, but as long as it stays funny. – Sean Gaffney
Nyankees, Vol. 1 | By Atsushi Okada | Yen Press – Nyankees is “a tale of street cats portrayed as hoodlums.” When Ryuusei, a “dark tabby,” comes to Nekonaki Town in search of a male calico with a scarred eye, he first tangles with members of a gang led by Taiga, an orange tabby. Although winning a fight against Taiga entitles Ryuusei to take over as boss, he comes to respect the other kitty, and together they go to rescue a female cat who has been kidnapped by the calico’s gang. I wanted to like Nyankees but sadly it didn’t click with me. Probably its best attribute is that, after several pages of the characters in human form, a dramatic panel sometimes depicts them as cats, like the two-page spread in which Ryuusei and Taiga send a couple of adversaries flying. I didn’t find it funny—the “It’s pawback time!” line made me groan aloud—and the story’s not interesting, either. Too bad. – Michelle Smith
One-Punch Man, Vol. 15 | By ONE and Yusuke Murata | Viz Media – Saitama is back, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s bringing all the laughs, as he’s back to being in a funk about everything being so boring because he can easily defeat everyone. Of all people, King has the best moment of the volume, when he tries to convince Saitama that there are reasons to be a great hero other than finding stronger and stronger people to fight. Unfortunately, Saitama is not ready to accept that lesson yet. Meanwhile, the whole “become stronger by becoming monsters” movement is hitting up some of the older minor villains/heroes from prior chapters, sometimes with amusing results and sometimes not. Solid, but I desperately want this to be silly again. – Sean Gaffney
Shojo FIGHT!, Vol. 6 | By Yoko Nihonbashi | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – So much happens in the characters’ personal lives this volume, some of it monumental, that it almost feels like a soap opera. Michiru and Odagiri accidentally overhear that Shigeru has retinitis pigmentosa and is experiencing vision loss, causing Michiru to realize how blind he has been to why their father has been expecting more from Shigeru all these years. I love how often Michiru cries in this volume and nobody gives him crap for it. I also love that he gets more determined to win the spring tournament while Shigeru can still see it happen. On top of this, we get a lot more background about Hasegawa’s family and her friendship with Itami, which ties in to Odagiri’s brother the aspiring mangaka and to Atsuko and her contentious relationship with her stepmother. Every character gets some development and they improve at volleyball, too! Recommended. – Michelle Smith
Sweetness & Lightning, Vol. 11 | By Gido Amagakure | Kodansha Comics – It’s the penultimate volume of Sweetness & Lightning and things are winding down! After Inuzuka-sensei and Tsumugi work out some communication issues and visit family, the focus shifts to Kotori. She’s about to graduate high school, so the time seems right for her to confess to Inuzuka. I like that he evinces palpable dread about having to hurt her, but in the end she essentially proclaims her undying regard for him, Tsumugi, and food all at the same time. And she tells her friend “it was something more complicated” than love, so I guess that’s a relief. Too, though the restaurant will briefly close for remodeling, there are promises of cooking together in perpetuity. I’m not sure what the twelfth and final volume will contain, since this seemed plenty conclusive, but we’ll see all too soon. – Michelle Smith
Teasing Master Takagi-san, Vol. 3 | By Soichiro Yamamoto | Yen Press – I spent this volume admiring the cleverness of the title character. She clearly can read Nishikata like a book, but is also trying, in her teasing and bets, to get him to understand her feelings. That said, she is also content to merely tease him when he doesn’t get them—she’s not frustrated, and knows this is a long game. Possibly as Nishikata may not actually realize what’s going on till the end of high school. But it’s still middle school, so there are tests of courage, and measuring their height, and calligraphy, and even tickling. And even if they aren’t a couple, everyone else certainly seems to think they are, as the last chapter shows. This remains utterly fun and adorable. – Sean Gaffney

Meet the family!
Silica Gel (Do Not Eat)
Tumblr media
DOB: Aug. 15th 2023
Here's our one and only boy! He's pretty and dumb. . . and has a voracious appetite. He tries to bite everything and anything... Silly boi, do not eat that! We adopted him on a whim after going to meet his sister. Now we're stuck with the never ending purr machine.
Yuzu (aka Goblin Girl)
Tumblr media
DOB: Aug. 15th 2023
Our resident goblin girl. She loves to chase her own tail and go goblin mode all over the house. And she'll look at you with her big ol' eyes whenever she's up to no good. We were in the market for a calico and I fell in love with her at first sight. Now she's drowning in love whenever I can catch her.
Delilah
Tumblr media
DOB: May 23 2018
The poorest of babies. The wobbliest of girls. And the silkiest of all. We adopted her when she was 3yo from a coworker who wasn't able to keep her at the time and we jokingly refer to her as a rescue. She's super soft until she's spiky! Feel free to pick her up and carry her around for a bit though, she loves attention.
Gracie
Tumblr media
Aug. 15th 2006 - Nov. 3rd 2023
R.I.P. to our pretty kitty. Had her from kitten good all the way up until her death. My first cat and the sweetest thing you'd ever meet. She was a scaredy-cat weirdo who wanted to cuddle every second of the day and was lazy until the last. Let it be known though that she was a great mouser lol. She was beauty, she was grace, she always wanted to be in your face.
