there's something inherent in the act of caring for someone;

and in my endless old guard brain rot this takes the form of:

- nile helping booker with therapy/ alcoholism. essentially being the go-between for him and the others during his "banishment" (I don't think it would last the full 100, and I've seen some gorgeous fics on the subject).

-it is customary to cleanse with water or sand before praying salat (I'm basing this off of research and a fic that had extremely good research with footnotes and all); and in Christianity- assume the priest Nicolo canon- washing of feet and in general is a very devotional act. it's something the disciples do, Mary Magdalene washes JC's feet with her tears and dries them with her hair, so it's all in all a very Big Thing.

in my mind, Nicolo would wash Yusef's feet as like.... his little way of saying "you are everything to me, you are holy and divine and a gift and I would do anything for you if you only asked it of me".

because, in my mind at least, joe is the wordsmith. Joe gives the speeches and writes poetry, and Nicky uses acts of service to show his devotion. Nicky cooks food, and finds baklava with varied recipes, and cuts the guards hair (it started as him fixing Andy's horrible chop in the 1670s, and ended as a way for him to show his family he loved them. he spends weeks holed up with the shitty tablet nile insisted on, learning how to do braids and care for her hair, the same way he'd watched Yusef's mother care for his sister's until he knew how to comb out the snarls and sand his beloved got caught up in). I just think Nicky seems the type to show affection in being there for someone, and that with as much religious guilt as this fandom loves to give the man, it would be sweet to see it as a tie in to his love and devotion to Joe. because Nicky absolutely believes it was God or fate that brought them together, and that loving Joe is the ultimate good he will ever do.

- Andy pushes people. she's brash and ruthless, and loves so fiercely. there's a reason Joe jokes (never to her face) that Andy is the momma bear of the group.

she has Nile train until her muscles are screaming and numbing and screaming again, several times over.

she takes guard duty at night, a vigil she has in the kitchen, around the entire safehouse, and ends outside each bedroom or in the common sleeping area, listening for quiet breaths.

she trusts her team to take care of themselves, of each other.

but they are all so young to her, ageless and once a god.

Andy pushes them because they rise to it, Nile better with the sword every day, her languages coming along well with nightly dinners where conversation only takes place in that week's dialect.

- Booker I feel like will have quite the complex after he's un-banished.

he goes out of his way to make sure their safe houses are Safe. he takes over learning everything he can from medical courses, emt training, textbooks; to learn how to take care of Andy in her new mortal state.

he spends three weeks researching proper nutrition and gets his hand chopped off the one time he tries to insist on a healthy alternative to sweets.

Booker spends months teaching Nile new languages, how to blend into a crowd, how to work in the underbelly of cities and make friends in unlikely places.

deep down, he knows he's trying to train her to take his place. And as much as she lacks the eye for detail and intuition of what changes to make to forged papers, she's learning. (Joe's the one to corner him about it, grappling and fighting and screaming until Booker quiets, in a close headlock, his back to Yusef's chest, and stills. Joe shushes him, and then says, animosity gone for the first time in a while, "you're my brother. I love you, and I'm so sorry we failed you. but we are a family, Book, we are a family.")

it's slow moving, but eventually booker admits his forgeries are better than Nile's. that maybe he should stick around a bit longer, until she has some practise.

Some Old Guard headcanons because I am back on my Old Guard Bullshit™.

General HC:

Nile is the first person who's enjoyed cooking (instead of it just being a need-to-survive) since Nicky and Joe and the three of them end up making some good af food

Booker's longest running gag is forging himself accreditations from various prestigious history departments just to fuck with historical records from the other Guard's time periods. The equivalent of editing wikipedia articles of random people to say ridiculous shit.

Andy fucks with historical stuff just by leaving some of the stuff she kept that she no longer has reason to keep in random spots. She once left a bag of early Athenian coins in Australia just to see what theories archaeologists came up with. (Spoiler: none of them were "6,000 year old immortal fucks with her shit to confuse the world")

Joe keeps all his sketchbooks like they're his diary, but he rarely looks back on them. There are few he brings with him everywhere: the first one he filled knowing Nicky, one from Malta, the pages of the dreams of Booker and Nile have been ripped out and tucked into the sketchbook from when he first met the Guard (Lykon, Andy, Quynh and Nicky take up equal space on the pages)

Copley ends up in philosophical discussions with Nicky more than once, Joe occasionally contributes but Nile and Andy just kinda leave them to it.

Nicky thinks dog pants go on the back half of the dog, Joe thinks they go on all four legs. Nile regrets showing them the meme.

Nicky was the one that found Booker first, the Guard had taken a job that spread them out and he'd found Booker on the way to a safe house. Andy was already there but Joe arrived while Nicky was out for groceries. Joe met Booker, introduced himself and talked a bit about his side of their story, and then Nicky came home and they disappeared for the next 12 hours.

JoexNicky specific:

Joe is canonically older than Nicky but the hc is that they both joke about in constantly (the first time Nile hears it she is a bit confused)

There are entire sketchbooks of JUST Nicky in pretty much every safe house. Nicky and Joe have stopped Nile just in time more than once, but the one time they didn't she decided not to go around opening any more sketchbooks without asking first.

When Quynh was lost, Nicky realized that if Joe was ever lost in a way like that he wouldn't be strong enough to hold it together like Andy did. And Joe realized that he wouldn't be able to stop looking for Nicky if he was the one who was lost, to the detriment of any and everything else. They don't talk about those realizations.

Even if they started out killing each other, there was always a sense of sameness between Nicky and Joe, even if they couldn't really speak to each other at first.

Nicky loses his immortality before Joe, and for the first time they have to face the fact that one of them would carry on without the other.

AndyxQuynh:

Andy and Quynh had that same feeling, the sameness of two puzzle-piece souls fitting together for the first time on top of finding out that they weren't alone.

When the dream of Quynh's first death hit Andy, she didn't know what it was. She assumed it was her mind dreaming up someone like her to feel less alone after another generation of warriors had died. It took a few years for her to find Quynh in the desert, and that's when she realized what the dreams were.

Quynh thought Andy was a guide taking her to the afterlife when she first woke up in the desert. Then she realized they were the same and it all fell into place for her.

Can we talk about this face for a minute? Nicky’s nonchalant “Oh hey, you’re up” face? It struck me as odd the first time I saw TOG. I was like, “Okay, I get that you’re immortal but aren’t you even a LITTLE bit concerned about what’s happening right now?! You’re strapped to a table, some crazy doctor just finished taking biopsies with no anesthetic and that looked like the opposite of fun, the love of your life has been unconscious for who the hell knows how long, and THIS is the face you make when he finally comes to?!” It seemed like a strange acting choice on Luca’s part. But Gina kept it, despite the existence of what I can only assume were multiple takes, in which I’m sure Luca tried different things, so I mentally revisited... 

And the more I thought about it, the more I admired the subtly of the performances in this movie and had to give props to Luca. That look really brought home that Joe and Nicky have been in equally shitty situations multiple times over the centuries. In fact, given Nicky’s, “A fine justification. I’ve heard it so many times before,” response to Kozak, I’m left wondering just how many mad scientists (or whatever the equivalent would be, depending on the century) they’ve encountered! This look encapsulates the “This again? [sigh]” energy Nicky has throughout the lab scenes (aside from when he’s trying to get Joe to stop verbally beating the shit out of Booker). 

Ultimately, Nicky knows Andy is coming for them. And Booker as well, since he doesn’t yet know about Booker’s betrayal. Or Andy’s loss of immortality. OF COURSE ANDY IS COMING. So this whole thing is just about waiting it out, with the inconvenience of a crazy lady sticking needles into both of them. In the graphic novels, there’s even a “What do you think is taking her so long?” exchange between Joe and Nicky. (Right before they scare the scientist into releasing them with the prospect of what Andy is going to do to him. Heh.)

So, in short, Nicky’s placid, “I’ve been reading in bed and sipping a cup of French press coffee waiting for you to wake up; do you want waffles?” expression that I at first was all “WUH?” about is, in fact, perfection.
