Ran Yakumo Simulator 2023
[CORE_SOUL: On]
You are nowhere. There is nothing.
In truth, you are likely in your body, hopefully where you last left it, but you cannot tell at this time.
[DIVINATION_MODULE_v3.5: On] - It will take eight minutes to gain visual input in the right eye. It will take an hour and five minutes for [AUX_AUDIT_PROC_v9] to come online. Heat a tortoise shell and observe the cracks for more information.
You are glad Lady Yukari made it so that this is what typically comes online first. It usually gives you something to look forward to. Though it would perhaps be nicer to be able to see or move first. However, you know from experience that these are some of the more difficult parts of a shikigami to make work.
[CHEN_CONNECTION_v12: On] - She is fast asleep. No further information.
This is the only part of yourself that you made largely on your own. Naturally, it is the least functional. It was worse in the past though.
[...]
[ROCK_GAP_SIMULACRUM: On]
In place of this there used to be a gap connection to the outside world. Lady Yukari called it a "Load Bearing Coconut", even though it was clearly connected to a rock. However, it apparently shattered last year, which of course caused practically everything to either malfunction or break completely. This is a replacement she made. This increased loading time, as did all the previous band-aid fixes over the last several centuries.
[...]
[OLD_REPURPOSED_MODULE_(REPLACE_THIS): On]
[SENSE_INPUT_BUS: On]
[SMELL: On]
[VISION_R: On]
The left eye for some reason always takes at least a few more minutes to come online. Lady Yukari has not been able to explain why that is to you.
You know that you are in fact in your room, and you know that eight minutes have passed. Little you can do with this information for now, since you still cannot move.
You should change your duvet cover later today. This one needs to be washed.
[PROPRIOCEPTION: On]
[TASTE: On]
[SOMATOSENSORY: On]
Your eyes are very dry, much like every morning. They open automatically when you first awake, but you can only blink voluntarily. Not an urgent fix, since this cannot cause you any damage, it's just unpleasant.
[FIXUPS_v3: On]
For the time being, you are stuck staring at the ceiling. Yukari told you once that body motion and eye motion are controlled largely separately in humans, but this is not the case in your body. You cannot move your eyes until the bodily output bus comes online.
[...]
[FIXUPS_B_v5.5: On]
[MOTOR_CONTROL_CORE_v4: On]
This part will help you coordinate your movements once you are able to move.
[FIXUPS_C_v4: On]
[MOTORICS_STABILISER_v2: On]
[...]
[BODILY_OUTPUT_BUS: On]
[GAP: On]
At long last. You blink and rub your eyes in an attempt to get rid of the dryness. You finally sit up. You get up from your bed.
What is this gap for, in any case?
You should probably start going about your day.
You look around your room for what might be your hairbrush. None of your visual processing modules are on yet, and so identifying objects is difficult. Also, your left eye is taking a while to start working. Nevertheless you find what you figure is a brush - it is about the correct lenght, has one thinner part that may be a handle, and a wider part bearing what might be the hairs. Using the same memorized motions you've used for centuries, you brush your hair.
Maybe you should leave your room. Might be good to try to cook something, or if your object identification processing module isn't on yet by then, maybe get a drink.
You walk towards what seems like a door. You look over it to make sure it is not your closet door. The shape of the handle seems right for the one you are looking for, so you start walking towards it.
[FIXUP_OVERHAUL_v0.99: On]
Suffering a momentary lapse of consciousness, you crash right into the door, and fall onto the floor.
This was an attempt of Lady Yukari's to eventually replace all the overly big "fixup" modules with some more streamlined implementation. This giant module, currently attached somewhere around the other fixup and motorics modules, is the result. Frankly, you would be better off without it.
You get back up and open the door.
[VISION_L: On]
[SPEECH_MOTORICS_v2: On]
Took a while. You walk out of your room and head to the kitchen, using your mental map of the house, walking carefully, since your ability to notice obstacles by sight is still impaired.
You enter what you're fairly sure is the kitchen. Probably best you do not cook just yet. You remember Yukari recently purchased some outside world drink. You could try that, to pass the time.
It is bottled, so you look for a bottle, and a glass to pour the drink into. You find objects identifiable as such.
You pour yourself a glass. Isn't this smell strange? You take a sip..
You spit it out. This is vinegar. This was not the right bottle.
[AUX_VISUAL_PROC_OBJECTS_IDENT_v4: On]
This would have been very useful a few seconds ago.
[STAR_MAP_HD: On]
[CLOCK: On] - It is 7:21:30.2912 am
You are unsure what the star chart is for, and every time you asked Yukari, she just chuckled and refused to answer.
You hear a sound behind you in the kitchen. Laughter?
You look in the direction of the sound. The source of it is some sort of person. You cannot tell apart faces yet, but they are wearing one of Yukari's dresses and have blond hair, and so you easily conclude this is probably Lady Yukari.
YAKUMO YUKARI - [Unintelligible]
You cannot yet process speech, so you don't know what she is saying.
YOU - "I'm sorry, Lady Yukari. My auditory processor is not on yet, and so I cannot understand you."
The person you presumed is Lady Yukari laughs again.
You sigh.
You used to be able to do a lot of this processing with the core soul alone, didn't you? Has your core just lost its functions, as it could rely on all the auxiliary processors?
Not that it matters.
You come back to the stove to cook breakfast for yourself, Lady Yukari and Chen. By the time you are done, most modules should be on.

persona misogyny is so fucking wild. ignoring literally everything else about the entire rest of the games, every single s.link with a female character is like “entirely for having been born a woman i have had to work twice as hard for a fraction of the benefit. even now, i am stripped of my agency in a position i never wanted in the first place” and/or “i’m put on a pedestal by the people in my life because of my looks. men see me as an object to be conquered, women hate me for ‘stealing’ ‘their’ men. if i’m withdrawn i’m a bitch, if i’m friendly i’m easy. because of this, i’m alone” and/or “because of my personality or hobby or lack of cooking skills, i feel like i’m failing at femininity. if being a woman is something i can fail at, then where does that leave me? i’m scared at the loss of my identity and place in society”
like very consistently they present female characters with complex thoughts towards their place in society as women, femininity as a whole, and facing issues stemming from misogyny, and then the payoff is always “my problems were entirely my own fault. i wasn’t strong enough, i was a coward. but now, i’m gonna work hard to be exactly what society expects me to be (which is what i want to be)! i’m gonna do better at femininity (which is still something tangible i can fail at)! i’m going to try hard at making friends (which was my fault for not doing)! all my problems are solved through personal responsibility (that im totally culpable for), effort (which i previously was not putting in), or you, a man! i am Happy and Satisfied with this outcome, can i be Your woman?”
and like hello? why are we here. what the fuck are we doing. why do we keep doing this every single time. can we not do the constant lukewarm attempts at criticizing misogyny so you can jerk off to your own thoughtfulness, while ultimately reinforcing patriarchal systems and brushing off any deeper misogyny-bred issues as a lack of deference to one’s rightful place in society? like maybe don’t do that? for fucking once? just an idea

trust
Never trust a yokai. One of the many rules of the Hakurei shrine maidens. Reimu had no problem with it. Not when the yokai kept randomly showing up to steal her food. "Oh lighten up, dear," Yukari chuckled after sharing a drink with the shrine maiden. "That just means they like you." "No it doesn't and I don't like them," Reimu hissed back. "I don't even like you."
"How stubborn," she sighed and shook her head. "You treat them well, regardless. So why the cold act, my dear?" "You're yokai." Reimu grunted and took another swig. "It's my job." "And yet you're also so cold to humans. Especially that witch." Reimu froze. "What are you saying?" Yukari laughed behind her fan. "I'm saying if that's your way of showing affection, you like her an awful lot." Heat rose to her cheeks and she grumbled out an answer that just got another laugh. "Besides, I didn't say anything about liking you all." Reimu huffed. "I don't like yokai." "But you do like Marisa." Reimu pulled out her purification rod, but the gap yokai had disappeared. "I hate you." "Let me give you some advice," Yukari's voice came from behind Reimu and the shrine maiden twisted around to find her stealing some of the food they had with the sake. "I don't need advice!" She shouted. "I fell in love with the stars too." Yukari looked up at the night sky. Reimu blinked. She could've sworn behind her fan was a smile far sadder than she had ever seen on the yokai. "They're so incredibly frustrating, but you can't deny that your heart beats faster. They hold your hand and you walk together and everything feels right." She closed her eyes. "But the stars are never meant to be held. They will be always out of reach." Then, she left. Leaving Reimu to stare up at the sky. "… Never trust a yokai," she huffed.

“Well done, Aka.” Yukari smiled warmly, her tone soft and comforting.
“My most loyal of shikigami. It would only make sense for your reward to be proportional to the quality of the work you’ve done for me.”
Creating a gap in front of the two, she reached inside with one hand and smiled at the tengu. Without breaking eye contact with her, Yukari wriggled her arm. Aka’s ears perked up as she heard the tell-tale shaking of a particular jar. Instantly, she began to drool, her eyes widening into dazzling red saucers. Such a reaction made Yukari smile even brighter.
Aka’s breathing hastened as Yukari pulled her hand out, holding a lavishly decorated purple tin labeled “The Good Birdseed” in large, cursive letters.

Aka: Lady Yukari, why did you choose me to become your shikigami?
Yukari, looking sinister: Oh, there wasn't any special reason. Tengu are fairly optimal shikigami, and you just happened to be the one who caught my attention. That's all!
Aka, at first seeming helpless and defeated: ... oh.
Aka, starry-eyed: I am so lucky! (Yukari sweatdrops in the background)

Persona 3 characters who do not interact but i think would have very fun and interesting dynamics if they did:
Minato + Rio. autism gang. both of them are bad with relationships/social cues, so people can think of them as rude, but they're just blunt and say what they mean, so they would get along swimmingly. they also both have dry senses of humor and would tease each other a lot i think. also Rio would call Minato out for being a bit of a pushover, and Minato would be able to tell Rio when she's being a little pushy without being an ass about it. it's a mutually beneficial relationship. even when they aren't both just complaining about weird social conventions.
Shinjiro + Chihiro. i've said before that i think Shinji doesn't end up graduating for two more years, which puts him in the same class as Chihiro. they would never interact under normal circumstances but he's a renowned delinquent and she's student council president so like. i feel like Chihiro keeps approaching him, sometimes to call him out for skipping, sometimes to offer help and such. he assumes Mitsuru put her up to it, but really she just has a strong sense of duty as student council president, even if she's also kind of scared of him at first. and after a few months of pestering, he finally has to admit to himself that he's kind of fond of her and genuinely respects her, whereas she has no trouble admitting that she's come to care about him as a friend, not just a random classmate, and also his dry remarks crack her up
Junpei + Maiko. honestly I want to see everyone interact with Maiko because she's perfect in every way, but i think Junpei in particular would get along great with her. he can't calm her down, but he can definitely cheer her up. he's good at indulging her without seeming put-upon. meanwhile, Maiko genuinely thinks he's cool, which does wonders for his ego. and as much as people might think otherwise, Junpei could really REALLY use an ego boost. having someone just like him and rely on him like a big brother would genuinely be great for him.
Theodore + Akinari. i genuinely think that i'm not capable of summarizing the incredible, life-altering conversation that they would have. give them sixty minutes on a bench together and they will uncover philosophical truths not even God understands.
Saori + Yukari. my ideas for their friendship are kind of incomprehensible but basically: both feel very isolated from their peers for different reasons, which leads to them acting somewhat distant and aloof. in Yukari's case, she has trouble relating to peoples' petty problems. this is both an issue of trauma and in my opinion some sense of judgment/superiority that Yukari feels. Saori, on the other hand, struggles to relate to other students because of her age, past, and upbringing. again, an issue of trauma compounded by her handling of the situation (where her becoming passive and something of a pushover just opens her up to harassment). but even though they're similar, Yukari is extremely popular and well-liked at Gekkoukan, whereas Saori is bullied to the extent that she can't even attend the Kyoto school trip. i think they wouldn't interact organically, but if they were to, they would clash at first. Yukari would be annoyed by Saori's passive attitude, whereas Saori would feel unfairly judged by her (and also somewhat jealous that Yukari is liked while she's bullied). but, at the same time, they could easily grow to understand each other, not just because of the surface level similarity of their situations, but because they both just feel disconnected from their peers and only really want to be treated well and have friends they can relate to. also, while i think Yukari might act judgmental of Saori, i also think she would stand up for Saori instantly the same way FeMC does, and would genuinely encourage Saori to do the same. and i think Saori could honestly be a mature and level-headed friend for Yukari who is able to have serious conversations with her beyond the petty conversations that she feels restricted to with other students. even if that includes telling Yukari that she's being a little judgmental. (yukari haters don't touch this post btw i will block on sight)
oops. babbled about saori-yukari friendship too long. my b. moving on.
FeMC + Kazushi. first of all they would get up to lots of shenanigans together. Kaz is a little gullible and Kotone would mess with him a lot, but they would also egg each other on in stupid fun dares, and they would be those friends who always have each others backs, y'know? on a more serious note, i think FeMC would be able to gently convince Kazushi to look after his own health first and foremost, without enabling him, in a way Minato lacks the delicate social touch for. and i also think Kaz would be a genuinely grounding presence for Kotone (because she sometimes needs someone there to say, uh, hey, hold on, i know it's all fun and games and stuff, but isn't the thing youre about to do like actually completely stupid).
Akihiko + Ryoji. yes yes hot springs escape scene, but genuinely think about it. Akihiko, in many ways, is the character who most strongly thematically represents stubborn resistance against death. his parents die, his sister dies, so he commits himself to becoming strong so that it will never happen again. but, of course, it's an impossible goal. people will always die. it doesn't matter how strong he becomes; that will never change. but he still finds his purpose in being a protector; he still finds meaning in this eternal, futile struggle. Ryoji is, at once, the very thing that Akihiko is so determined to stand against -- and he is also the only one who cannot fight. he is surrender. he has no choice but to surrender, since he will become the very thing that he wants to stop. and he encourages the others to give up as well, because he feels that a quiet death is the best that he can offer them. even when he tells he others how to fight back against Nyx, he himself simply wanders passively off to become Nyx. because he has no choice. in this, he and Akihiko are diametrically opposed. don't you want to see those two viewpoints, both from truly kind and empathetic people who want to protect others, clash? also Ryoji gives Akihiko very bad dating advice which Akihiko takes at face value and hijinks ensue. boom, gottem.
this kind of took a turn but hold on one more
Chidori + Mitsuru. superficially similar. red-eyed red-haired young women given powers and therefore responsibilities far beyond their age. but Mitsuru fully (and overzealously) embraced her newfound responsibilities while Chidori instead embraced apathy. Chidori is nihilistic and doesn't seem to form or even understand attachments to others, at least not easily, and doesn't seem to have much of a sense of duty or ethics, not even understanding others who do. all understandable, given her past and upbringing, mind you. Mitsuru, on the other hand, is first and foremost an optimist. she declares that there *must* be a way to make things right, and she decides it's her responsibility to do so, and forms a protective sort of bond with all the other members of SEES and a strong code of ethics. but in the end, both are very detached and isolated people who feel singled out due to their abilities and childhoods, and i think they could find companionship and understanding, and perhaps a broadening of their own horizons, in each other.

warmth
Renko was naturally warm. Not enough to cause concern, but enough that it was noticed. Merry once joked it was because her brain was overheating, Renko huffed in reply. She really didn't mind it though. It made winters actually bearable. It wasn't uncommon for her to grab Renko's hand or lean against her. Renko seemed amused, or at least not bothered by it. Merry distinctly remembered her saying once: "You're always so cold, Merry. But that's why I'm here! We achieve equilibrium." She had no clue what Renko meant, but buried herself in her warmth and nearly fell asleep as they waited for the bus.
Yukari slept with several blankets, but it still wasn't enough to replace what she lost.

scene fic request: emery, yukari, zisu, + meeting (??)
because i. haven't stopped thinking about that one thing with the hypothetical of emery meeting yukari someone mentioned once and it's absolutely hilarious to me
"This is quite good," the man commented with a smile, holding his cup between his palms. "And if I'm recalling correctly then this is a family recipe, is that right?"
"Yes," Zisu was curt with the man, trying to look strong amid her frantically beating heart. "We've had it in our family for many years."
For some reason she could not parse, the prince preened at her response. "Well, I am glad to have my first cup! This shall definitely be a favorite of mine going forward, I can tell."
It was clear from his wording that Prince Emery of Unova expected to have many more cups than just the one. Zisu's fingers dug deeply into her knees, her frustration barely hidden and out of sight under the table. She wished for nothing more than to cast the man out of her home, but feared the potential consequences in doing so. The current situation in Jubilife was nothing less than precarious, and as Captain of the Security Corps it was her duty to ensure the peace regardless of the depth of sacrifice.
"Oops," her daughter beside her fumbled with the tea pot, nearly spilling the boiling water onto herself had it not been for the quick and deft hands of the prince who righted it back onto the table.
Even if it meant playing host to the man across from her who was under the entirely incorrect impression that he was the father to her partner—and thus the father-in-law to Zisu—as well as the grandfather to their daughter.
"Careful, dearest," he told her, and it took everything in Zisu to not bristle at the nickname he gifted Yukari. She wished, as she often did, that she had her former captain's ability to remain unaffected no matter what opponent she faced because it would make this whole interaction less laborious on her part she struggled to keep her cool. "Let your mother handle pouring if you must have more."
"She really shouldn't be drinking tea this late," Zisu commented, turning to her daughter so that she could caress her curly, red locks. "Otherwise she'll have to get up in the middle of the night, won't you, sweet pea?"
"No!" Yukari denied it, but she couldn't fool her mother. Zisu knew her better than she knew herself, and ruffled her head affectionately.
In response to Zisu's statement, Prince Emery adjusted the pot so that it was further out of reach from little hands. "Of course. Well, in that case, it seems as though you have hit your limit for the night."
Slumping forward, arms reaching out to the other side of the table, Yukari whined, "Aww."
Prince Emery chuckled at her pouting, before sobering up and turning his attention back to Zisu. "You never did answer me on where Emerson is and why he hasn't joined us."
Zisu worked her jaw as subtly as she could. "He is not here."
"Well yes I see that, but why?"
Because of you, she wanted to spit but refrained. Even though it was the truth—and that was all the reason needed to hold her tongue when faced with this man. It was frustrating not being able to speak her mind in her own home, and even more frustrating that Ingo wasn't at her side to help mitigate the situation.
Because Ingo wasn't here, nor was he even in the village—at least, as far as anyone could tell. The last Zisu had seen her partner was when he and the royal walked away from Tao Hua's basement, leaving all of them to deal with the fall-out of Prince Emery's declaration. They were all in agreement, at least, that Prince Emery was full of it, especially when Abra reported back with all of the information he eavesdropped during their 'private' talk.
Yet, learning about the insidious rot festering within Unovan royal family did nothing to ease her fears when it was clear that Ingo was not returning to the boat behind the prince.
Especially not when the last thing that Abra had seen and left in Cyllene's mind was, 'Sword went chop.'
Zisu couldn't help but picture that Ingo was left bleeding on the deck of the ship, and was kept back from checking herself by the combined efforts of Sanqua and Beni both. The ship was structurally unsound, according to Sanqua and there was no point in putting her life in danger on a hypothetical.
And Beni—he pointed out that he could not smell blood on the prince when he returned.
So yes, her fears were abated by them and quelled after the return of Irida, and yet she still went home all by herself. Ingo had gotten it into his head that the best course of action was staying away from Jubilife during the remainder of Prince Emery's visit. Where to? He didn't say. Zisu could and couldn't see his logic in doing so—considering that the prince had gone out of his way to track down their quarters just to bother her partner more than he already had proved that the key to counteracting this obsession was by removing himself from the equation.
But Ingo failed to consider that his home was Zisu's home too—and their daughter's.
He wasn't in his right mind, Zisu was sure of it. So she didn't blame him much. Or, tried not to. She would certainly get it into his thick skull that as partners they were supposed to share the weight of any challenge together, albeit in a gentle fashion. He didn't need more stress impacting his health, not with this plague before them.
Zisu just wished that he could have warned her a tad better than only telling Irida his plans so that she could have passed off Yukari to the care of someone else for a moment, like Professor Laventon or the Pearl Clan. But again, she couldn't fault him for this either as there was little time between her returning home from the Galaxy Hall and Prince Emery skulking around Canala Avenue.
All she could do was hope that Ingo made it to the Highlands safely. Zisu didn't trust him to get there on his lonesome, and sent out a prayer to the Pearl Clan's Palkia that he kept some foresight to summon Sneasler's aid instead of traversing cliff faces whilst in a daze.
Prince Emery stared expectantly at her, so Zisu defaulted to the generally true excuse of, "Often his warden duties require him to tend to his ward for a night or two, sometimes longer. His absence is normal."
Emery frowned, and when he did that, he looked so much like Ingo that her stomach dropped. He muttered lowly, "I see. Even more reason for you all to return to Unova with me."
Before Zisu could interject and firmly enforce that they would be doing no such thing, Yukari spoke up, "Who are you again?"
A smile blossomed onto Prince Emery's face once more as he turned to her, "Who am I? Well, I am your father's father, which means that I am your grandfather."
"My grandfather...?" Confused, Yukari turned to Zisu as if to confirm with her mother that the stranger was indeed telling the truth, an impossible task for the oldest Prince of Unova.
As her lips parted to respond, she felt the air grow tense. Zisu chanced a look at the man across from her, watching as his eyes hardened in her direction. As if daring her to contradict him.
She wondered, briefly, if he planned on cornering her like this, aware that she could do little to offend or speak out against him without everything tumbling down like improperly stacked firewood. Did the prince know she was the captain of security? Did he take note of her position toward the middle of the table and deemed his power as greater than hers?
Not only that, but somehow and from someone he had gained the knowledge that she and Ingo were married, a fact that he interpreted as binding her to him as an off-shoot branch of his family tree. And Zisu—as well as the rest of those in attendance to that disastrous welcome banquet—knew very well how Prince Emery treated family. What calmed her more than anything else was that he definitely had no idea about Yukari's existence prior to his appearing on her stoop. That much was certain, as genuine surprise had crossed onto his face when he barged his way into her home, stopping dead in his tracks in the genkan at the sight of her.
Whatever it was, Zisu knew that nothing good could come out of the way that Emery leaned his elbows onto the table and folded his hands together to prop up his chin, as he said, "But you can just call me Poppy."
