he heard that familiar whistle, followed by a thump of a foot being kicked up upon one of the tables. sagawa. the asshole who actually owns this place. majima looked around to see him with two hostesses, two of the best in the house in a matter of fact. majima looked down at the other man with a disapproving look written upon his features as he eyed the foot upon the table ... people put food, & drink upon those tables ... but it wasn't like he could do much with sagawa ... fucker had a mind of his own when it came to the rules that majima set for the place. still, he'll put on his customer service face, & try to sort out the situation as politely as he could.

Theory about the Pinky

So, all the rest of the Fingers follow specific themes of their fingers association in popular culture.

The Thumb is known for their highly rigid top-down system of hierarchy where the strong dominate the weak. Much like how in a "thumb war" two people competing will try to push down each other's thumbs to show dominance.

The Index give people instructions in the form of the Prescripts, and the finger also known as the pointer finger is used to point in directions for people to focus on or follow.

The Middle are supposedly very big on senses of brotherhood, but they're also well known for exacting harsh vengeance on anyone who harms one of their own or are even related to them. Which fits the common symbol of the middle finger as an obscene gesture and usually one used in retaliation when someone has made them mad.

The Ring is a bit more abstract, but from Leviathan we know that the Ring are artists. And the ring finger, as implied, is usually the one meant to display very impressive rings like wedding or engagement rings. Which can be fitting to a group whose primary goal is making their specific form of "art" to be seen by others.

So following all that, my running theory on the Pinky has two parts. Taking into account that the Pinky is apparently the most dangerous of all the Syndicates.

1) The Pinky are a group who focuses a lot on pacts or promises. The Pinky finger is most well known for the "Pinky promise", or alternatively the "yubikiri". But the essence is the same, making a promise while hooking pinkies, with the implication being that if one parry breaks the promise then there will be dire consequences. Sometimes that the offender's pinky will be broken, or in the case of yubikiri that they'll be made to swallow a thousand needles

2) The Pinky itself, outside of its own group's personal turf interests, may act as an intermediary/enforcer of inter-Finger rules and relations. Because of their interest in vows and promises, they use their authority to enforce specific rules between all the Fingers, and enact consequences if anyone steps out of line (though not strictly for things like killing or fighting over turf, probably more abstract Finger-specific things). Also kind of brings to mind the idea of "yubitsume" to me, wherein the little finger will have small pieces removed to pay for transgressions, usually by failing to perform some duty or uphold a promise.

In line with this theory, interesting tidbit is that there's actually a nursery rhyme related to an the Pinky Promise, which relates a little to a meeting of the Fingers' leaders being called a "Finger Bow-Bell".

KK2 Chozen Analysis

I'm not gonna say anything that has already (probably) been said, and I'm just going to make some quick points.

In Karate Kid 2 Chozen talks about honour and so on, and how he needs to reclaim it. Now I've read some opinions on Chozen where people have demonised his actions (for good reason), but I got the impression that they didn't understand him. What I mean by this is that Chozen's culture and perception of honour is different from ours (westerners). He comes from a place where Senppuku used to be a thing, so when Chozen is talking about his honour and stuff... it feels like a double edged sword when we, the audience, judge his character.

To make things technical or complicated depending on your opinion, Senppuku is the act of deleting one-self in real life, and Samurais would do it to avoid dishonouring themselves. If a Samurai did not commit Senppuku then they would be labelled a Ronin which wasn't good. Being a Ronin was a great dishonour, and a worse life than death. There's also Jigai, the female version of Senppuku, though I'm not sure why it was done.

In the Yakuza there's a thing called Yubitsume, where a member would cut off one of their fingers as an apology. Yakuza, as most of you know, still exists today. And there's evidence that members in the 80's and onwards have done this ritual. So with that being said, honour is a touchy subject regarding Chozen and not something that can be easily spoken on as a western audience.

The slight issue in this argument is that Okinawa and Japan are two different places. Okinawa, while a part of Japan is not in Japan. It's an island located between Taiwan and Japan. This makes me believe that how honour is perceived and practised in Okinawa is much different, in the sense that it may have been very important even when Japan banned certain practice before the 50's.

To be fair, I don't know how many teachings of honour were drilled into him, nor do I know when people stopped prioritising it. But just something I wanted to touch on.

Analysis 2:

In the final showdown between Chozen and Daniel I always saw it as a severe thing for Daniel. Not just because they're fighting to the death, but because Chozen is wearing black and yellow, which is something I always deemed to be a Cobra Kai colour before the Cobra Kai show came out and made it red. The only difference between Johnny and Chozen's karate gi is that Chozen has more yellow to his. Chozen's gi even makes him look like he's imitating a snake judging by the patterns, and I've always wondered if this was intentional by the director or whoever designed it.

The diamonds made me think of scales. So when Daniel is going up against him it feels like Johnny Lawrence all over again, just much worse. There's no cheering crowd, and there's no rules.

Before I watched Karate Kid 2 or found out what the plot was I saw this picture of Chozen and thought it was Daniel vs another Cobra Kai member. And then I watched the movie only to be genuinely surprised that wasn't the case. (I was 13-14, but still)

i think boss and moma are interesting character parallels. fundamentally, the pitch for both of them is basically "really chill, pretty good bosses despite all the menacing image they make of themselves, and also they're definitely for sure 100% breaking the law with everything they do but who cares".

the difference however lies in how the narrative frames their crimes. see, boss is "law enforcer who more often than not gets up to illegal shit", while moma is "yakuza chairman with more of a moral compass than your average patriarch". they're foils to each other, very different and very similar, but the story invites you to look at them through varying metrics.

with boss, a lot of her sketchier behaviour (coughcough using taxpayer money for her own personal interest when she takes from abis' funds to cover iris' surgery, moral dilemma be damned coughcough) is kinda swept under the rug. you just absolutely know she bends the law all the time, even with the best of intentions — you're just taught to not care. it's boss, she's just silly like that.

on the other hand, you have moma. his efforts to "go clean" are frequently (and lazily, might i add) made fun of; mentioning them is almost completely sure to get a "what the hell is a clean gang" in response. there's even extra steps to try to discredit it outright (iris going but aren't you clean when moma pulls out a rifle that is heavily and hilariously implied to be actually legal; aini having him mention he dropped yubitsume as a punishment, but then threatening chinpei with it in the epilogue for the laugh; among many other examples). it's often very black-and-white, like "oh silly moma, either you're evil or you're not, so since you're a criminal you're just faking the clean act sorry lol"

i dunno where exactly i'm going with this. i just think it's neat and ends up being commentary on the own mindsets of the people who wrote this. a yakuza kingpin trying to play it clean after his brother fucked it all straight to hell sounds paradoxical to the game (despite lien's arc but that's a rant for another day), while a police officer knee-deep in shit is just another tuesday i guess

If Sara does end up getting rescued by Keiji from her father and asunaro, how would shin feel about it? And how did Keiji's fingers get chopped off?

Well I’ll start with the fingers question since that actually does happen in the bad end.

So it’s a normal day, Sara has been “working” for a while now, when dad tells her she has to decide on something again. She holds back a sigh, knowing the drill, and tells him to show her what it is. And thus Keiji Shinogi is bought in front of her, hands tied behind his back, gagged, and pushed to the ground. He’s been peeping into Asunaro business, and well, we can’t let that go undisciplined.

Of course she doesn’t HAVE to decide on this one seeing how close her and Keiji were. If Meister hears her decision and realizes she just doesn’t have the guts to hand down a proper punishment, he can decide for her. Sara of course hates any idea of her dad handing down the punishment, so she thinks on her own. Something. Think of something Sara. As her dad tells her she’s taking a lot of time she finally shouts out a yubitsume ritual.

Sure. Yubitsume. If she demands enough joints Dad can see it. So, how much does Sara think Keiji should give? Sara feels sick to her stomach. She’s going to be doing permanent damage. Why did she say yubitsume? She tries to think of numbers that aren’t too radical but they all sound like they’ll lead to dad taking the lead.

“3 full fingers.”

And it was accepted. What a nightmare.

Keiji knew the way this worked. Have her come up with a worse idea than what Meister could think. He can tell by the man’s smile that he’s pleased with himself despite his daughters clear attempts not to cry. Disgusting. He does his best to look unaffected despite… well despite the fact he’s being told to chop his limbs off.

Sara is just telling him to breathe throughout the thing. She sounds one note away from hysterical, and he doesn’t really think joking to lighten the mood is gonna do any favors with the way she looks ready to pass out. Casual conversation also feels like… a no go. He just thanks her for her advice (advice that comes off like she’s seen this before) and moves on.

Of course severing the digits isn’t enough. Meister reminds them that part of the ritual is handing the severed fingers to the one who ordered them. Keiji can tell that Sara just wants this to end… so might as well get it closer to the end. He wraps them up and hands them to her, apologizing when he sees her horrified expression… though on second thought, apologizing might make it worse with what the situation is.

It doesn’t take too much time for him to be “escorted” out. These asunaro guys sure aren’t big old softies. Still, as his vision fades, Keiji has to be seeing wrong… why would Sara be going to that monster for comfort?

Anyways!

There is a set time when Sara leaves Asunaro on her own after her father dies (and also fakes her death) but if it came earlier in the timeline… well to be honest, I think she’d spend the rest of her life fighting against Meister and Asunaro for freedom. It’d take her a long time to be safe.

As for Shin, he’d probably be… mixed. A lot of time after the death game is spent with him dealing with mixed emotions about Sara, and seeing her in the state she is during those years at Asunaro would probably change his perspective at least a little. Sara probably wouldn’t even have the strength to fight back to a lot of his provocation anymore so it really would be like kicking a puppy, and I don’t think he’d get much enjoyment from that.

Still, he is still processing his grief from the death game and Kanna. Also the fact Keiji ghosted them is not something he is going to take kindly too.

Proton’s irezumi stretches from the left shoulder, crawls across the entirety of the arm, along his side, and ends just above the left ankle. From the ankle to the hip, the art depicts a retelling of the story of the storm god Susasnoo-no-Mikato slaying the eight-headed serpent, Yamato-no-Orochi; to fit the Pokémon universe, the eight-headed serpent is instead depicted as a monstrous, multi-headed sea monster-esque version of Lugia. His preferred weapon of choice is the balisong (butterfly knife.) Proton always has at least two on his person, and is capable of using one in each hand while fighting.

He’s also capable of using garrote wire, and keeps a semi-automatic pistol on his hip. Though he carries a pistol, Proton prefers to use other methods of attack and defense before drawing a firearm; he finds guns boring and too quick to use.

Aside from his weapons of choice, Proton also has several tanto blades, a few sets of brass knuckles, and of course, the leather whips that are issued to Rocket members.
