We’re Never Going Back to the 1950s
The year 2020 shattered America’s shared reality.
by DEREK THOMPSON
DECEMBER 16, 2020
***
Twenty years ago, the sociologist Robert Putnam in Bowling Alone used the decline of bowling leagues since the middle of the 20th century to symbolize America’s declining social engagement. This year, he published a sequel of sorts, The Upswing, in which he identified more stray threads of our social unraveling: in lower marriage rates, church attendance, and trust in government; in falling membership in all chapter-based associations; collapsing social trust among young adults; and even a decrease in mentions of community versus identity in novels and nonfiction books.
But no measure of communitarian pessimism could have prepared Putnam for the circumstances of the past nine months. America’s bowling alleys haven’t just depopulated; they’ve gone dark, along with thousands of churches, restaurants, bars, cafés, gyms, theaters, and almost every other physical space that could preserve or nurture a physical community.
Mirroring this civic fragmentation, America’s media and entertainment industry has spun apart, and the spinning is accelerating. On December 3, the film studio Warner Bros. announced that subscribers of the company’s digital streaming service HBO Max will be able to watch all of its 2021 film releases at home, on the same day that they’re released in theaters. The movies affected by this decision aren’t humble indies. We’re talking Dune and The Matrix 4—the sort of films that, if they were released exclusively in theaters next year, might earn a domestic box office roughly equal to the GDP of Micronesia.
Like Putnam’s beloved bowling alleys, cinemas are an example of the decline of semiweekly gatherings in the United States—even if they’re less chatty establishments. In the 1940s, the average American bought more than 30 movie tickets a year, regularly packing into theaters with scores of strangers. In the past few years, that figure fell below four. In 2020, movie tickets sold per-person will fall below one—possibly for the first time since the late 1800s. The decision by Warner Bros. will likely encourage other entertainment companies, such as Disney, to funnel more of their marquee content to streaming services in the next few years. And the result could be a death spiral for movie theaters as we know them, as the film industry continues its shift from a public, ticketed affair to a private, living-room experience.
Home entertainment is fracturing as well, and along with it the communal-while-alone possibility of a shared popular culture. Since 2010, 33 million households have either cut the cord or never signed up for cable TV in the first place. The traditional cable bundle is slowly dying, and its death is fertilizing new subscription-only streaming services, such as HBO Max, Disney+, Peacock from NBCUniversal, and Quibi (RIP), which join a landscape crowded with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu, not to mention user-generated video platforms including YouTube and TikTok.
It would be hackish to accuse Netflix or Warner Bros. of being the main accelerants of American loneliness. But the fact is that cinematic entertainment, which was born as the ultimate communal ritual, an experience whose technology required simultaneity and togetherness, has become the ultimate personal activity, an incomprehensibly long spectrum of different stories mostly consumed in a state of solitude.
This media shift—from the scarce and communal to the abundant and privatized—also describes the evolution of the news industry. In the past 20 years, newspaper circulation, advertising revenue, and employment have cratered. But overall, news—that is, sources of new information, of varying truthiness—didn’t decline; it exploded. The web created a phalanx of news publishers, not just websites but also Facebook pages, Instagram personalities, newsletters, podcasts, and so on; at the same time, Google and Facebook duopolized digital advertising, creating a situation where publishers were multiplying as advertising declined.
In ecology, the term niche partitioning describes the way that competing species become hyper-specialized in an attempt to co-exist in an environment with scarce resources. I think that’s what’s happening in the news industry. As the number of competing publishers increases, it makes sense for each of them to carve out an ecological niche. This niches-get-riches race leads logically to a set of more outlets that embrace a more unabashedly partisan perspective—just as they did in the late 1800s.
One might assume that polarization is what happens to people cut off from information. But the truth is closer to the opposite: More information means more polarization. Research shows that access to broadband internet in the U.S. has in many cases increased various measures of polarization, as the web introduces voters to a bigger menu of partisan news from which voters select the sites that match their political tastes.
We’ve seen this phenomenon accelerate in 2020. Four years ago, most people would have said there were three major cable news networks: the center-left one (CNN), the liberal alternative (MSNBC), and the conservative juggernaut (Fox News). But in the past few months, the conservative-news monolith has shattered. Since the election, Newsmax TV and the One America News Network have stepped up to backfill President Donald Trump’s election-fraud lies with programming from an alternate reality. And behold, niche partitioning works: Last week, Newsmax rode the election-conspiracy story to its first-ever ratings win over Fox. Because Trump devotees are going to buy tickets to whatever media universe offers the best narrative, networks are competing to tell the Trumpiest tale.
With weekly religious attendance at low ebb and live TV in structural decline, national elections are arguably the only activity that Americans do together in shared time. But shared time is not shared reality. Led by the president, Republican lawmakers have petitioned to sabotage the results of the election, based on fantastic conspiracy theories. The GOP fever dream, which is credulously reproduced across Trump-friendly media, is clearly contagious: More than 80 percent of Trump voters believe that Biden’s win is illegitimate, a figure corresponding to about 60 million people. There is nothing unique about reality and fantasy blending together in politics. But the speed and severity with which Trump’s “Stop the Steal!” mind virus has infected the GOP is the sign of a compromised civic immune system. A far-right cohort has been effectively quarantined from reality in one corner of our honeycombed media landscape.
There is no going back to the 1950s. We will never again be enfolded by those bespoke mid-century circumstances, the scarce broadcasts and broadsheets. The dividing forces are too strong and too many. The film experience pushed out across millions of flatscreens; the live-television networks splintering into millions of digital entertainment queues; the news dissolving into innumerable political realities: One by one, these are not evil trends. But they add up. Or, more aptly, they divide. They individuate.
People ask me if I’m optimistic about 2021, and the answer is that, in a way, I’m ecstatically optimistic. The economy will reopen, and life will reopen. People will come out of their homes; they will send their kids to school; they will hug and kiss and live. But underneath the high tide of economic growth and social normalization, I think we’ll feel something else, an eerie undertow of isolation and anxiety.
“The definition of community is ‘where you keep showing up,’” said someone I met, whose name I’ve forgotten, back in the days when it was normal to meet new people whose names you could forget. I haven’t forgotten that line, though: Community is where you keep showing up. What a lovely idea. But where do people keep showing up, these days? Nowhere. Not the office, not the COVID-aerosolized bars and gyms. A lot of people have spent a year finding community via a glowing screen in a room they never leave.
The empty bowling alleys and movie theaters; the infinity buffet of entertainment and partisan media; the dissolution of a shared American reality—these are distinct yet connected phenomena. Digital technology has spawned a choose-your-own-adventure mediascape, which has flooded the electorate with alternate realities, at the same time that its community ties wither. America is coming apart, and these pieces will not be easily reassembled.

Drawing Closer.
Animation lovers: watchlists at the ready. From action capers to Irish folk tales, in 3DCG or the humble pencil, by manga legends and raucous newcomers, Letterboxd’s animation correspondent Kambole Campbell picks ten new feature films we’re excited to see.
When the gears of the live-action film industry ground to a near-halt earlier this year, animators were still at work. As a medium that, at its most fundamental level, is controlled fully by the imaginations of its creators, this might be the one element of the screen industry that has some kind of ability to operate throughout the pandemic.
Based on previews from this year’s online edition of the annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival, there’s a lot to look forward to that’s still in the works, even now. With everything from blockbuster capers and fantastical alternate histories, explorations of folklore and real human stories alike, we can expect a spoil of boundless and endlessly creative films limited only by the imaginations of those drawing them.
Here are ten animated features I’m specifically excited for, in no particular order (except for the first—fight me if you like, Masaaki Yuasa will always win).
Tumblr media
Inu-Oh Directed by Masaaki Yuasa / Due to release in 2021
If there’s one new animated film to watch in the next year, make it Inu-Oh (but also, don’t limit yourself to one). Masaaki Yuasa has proven himself time and again to be one of the most exciting and versatile animation directors alive, as well as potentially the busiest. With his studio, Science Saru, this year alone he directed two television series—the fantastic ode to animators, Keep Your Hands off Eizouken!!, and the intense Netflix disaster series Japan Sinks: 2020—as well as the melancholy, romantic feature film Ride Your Wave.
Inu-Oh looks to be just as imaginative and wild as anything else Yuasa-san has made, based on the work-in-progress glimpse at Annecy. Set in fourteenth-century Japan, the film is based on Hideo Furukama’s novel about the legendary masked Noh theater performer Inu-Oh, born with “unique characteristics”, which lead them to cover their entire body. Both novel and film focus on their close friendship with the blind biwa hōshi (lute priest) Tomona, and the success they find together.
“We often think of history as moving in one straight line, but it actually branches off, and people and events in those branches have been forgotten or disappeared,” Yuasa-san said during the Annecy preview. Inu-Oh explores those hidden branches through an anachronistic reimagining of the roots of traditional Japanese entertainment. The main idea: what if the performers of Noh theater were treated like Japan’s pop idols of today? Yuasa-san described the main characters as “kind of like The Beatles” of 1300s Japan.
On credits alone there’s a lot of promise, with the legendary Taiyō Matsumoto— the mangaka who created Tekkonkinkreet and Ping Pong (and collaborated with Yuasa-san on the latter’s fantastic anime adaptation)—lending his eccentric yet elegant designs to the film. The preview opened with minute movements comprised of rough, wide almost painterly brushstrokes, an art style almost completely unlike anything Yuasa-san has done previously.
As it turns out, this is but one way of representing the world of Inu-Oh, through the perspective of Tomona, a Notes on Blindness-esque way of representing how Tomona perceives things. From those small glimpses, Inu-Oh looks to be a beautiful, anthropological piece built with both the same free-form style that characterizes the rest of his work, and perhaps something more classical as well.

Wolfwalkers Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart / Coming to theaters and Apple TV+ in late 2020 after a September 12 premiere at TIFF
Made and set in Kilkenny, home to the acclaimed animation studio Cartoon Saloon, the much-anticipated Wolfwalkers is inspired by animation’s past, Celtic legend, and the local area’s history. Set in 1650, Wolfwalkers takes place amidst attempts by the English (Cromwell, specifically) to pacify and tame Ireland. Representative of those wild elements the English are seeking to eradicate are the ‘wolfwalkers’—people blessed by Saint Patrick with the power to leave their bodies at night and become wolves during their sleep (Irish werewolves, essentially). The story follows an English girl, Robyn Goodfellowe (Honor Kneafsey), who moves to Ireland with her father Bill (Sean Bean), to help carry out Cromwell’s plan to kill the wolves.
Like his previous film, Song of the Sea (2014), co-director Tomm Moore says this new film is based upon a childhood story common amongst those living in Kilkenny. And like his previous films (including 2009’s The Secret of Kells), it looks to be a visual feast, with a mixture of dynamic camera styles, pre-viz work and hand-drawn animation for moments like its ‘wolf-vision’. Moore draws the ideological divide between the English and the Irish into every scratch of pencil, the occupied cities comprised of rigid lines and angular designs, while the forest and its inhabitants are more free-flowing and unkempt.
Moore cited the rough charcoal lines of Isao Takahata’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya as one influence on the Cartoon Saloon animators’ approach; the way that Robin is drawn gradually changing along with her worldview. Cartoon Saloon is yet to make a bad film, and Wolfwalkers looks like it might be the company’s most beautiful myth yet.
Stay tuned to The Letterboxd Show for an interview with Tomm Moore.

Over The Moon Directed by Glen Keane / Due on Netflix, late 2020
The feature directorial debut of animation legend Glen Keane, early glimpses of Over The Moon look utterly bonkers. A long-time character animator for Disney, having worked on almost all of the studio’s animation output since Pete’s Dragon in 1977, Keane looks to be bringing his vast array of talents to his first feature film. The trailer alone shows off a vast blend of styles, from the 3DCG (three-dimensional computer graphics) and more realistic lighting that we’ve come to expect from Disney animation, as well as the more textured, hand-drawn work the director cut his teeth on.
The story itself sounds wild, though it starts out simple enough: Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) is enraptured by her parents’ stories of a goddess living on the moon. After her mother passes away, Fei Fei begins to believe the story is true, and decides to build a rocket to get there. There’s also a hint of something living there. Whatever the answer is, I’m curious to see it, and with a star-studded cast that includes the likes of John Cho and Sandra Oh, how could I turn it down?

Lupin III: The First Directed by Takashi Yamazaki / Released in select territories; wider release due late 2020
Takashi Yamazaki’s Lupin III: The First, the first 3DCG-animated Lupin III feature film, looks rather incredible. It’s the latest in a vast, 50-year history of anime based on the manga from the late Kazuhiko Katō (known by the pen name Monkey Punch). Despite that long history, the Lupin III franchise has always managed to resist being made obsolete; part of its ongoing appeal is its ability to continuously adapt to new contexts and styles while retaining its simple charms, and The First is no different.
The film announces itself in the same way as ever, the iconic ‘Lupin III’ theme blaring over a flashy title sequence that builds off familiar iconography, as well as moments from the franchise’s history. It revels in the style of old-school caper the show continues to embrace, taking delight in the exploits of a modern-day gentleman thief who announces his robberies with calling cards.
Even with the new and unfamiliar animation style, Lupin III: The First feels like a classic Lupin III tale, taking the story back to the 1960s (the decade during which the character was created), and even putting its main character back in his classic red suit. Each character design translates surprisingly well to this mode of animation—Lupin’s gangly frame, as well as the unique appearances of his compatriots Goemon, Fujiko, Zenigata and Jigen (who looks bizarrely attractive in this—although, to be fair, “everyone in this movie is f—king sexy” according to Letterboxd member London. Accurate).
Yamazaki does well to avoid the often sterile feeling of 3DCG animation by having these characters all move like the cartoons they’re based on (for starters, a long-running visual gag of Lupin leaping straight out of his clothes). It might take some adjustment (which for me, only really lasted up to the opening credits) before it becomes fully dazzling. Lupin III: The First might be the most exciting action caper of 2020, in any medium.

The Legend of Hei Directed by Mtjj / Released in China late 2019; international release TBA
Rivalling Lupin III: The First for most flamboyant animation on show at Annecy was The Legend of Hei, a feature-length prequel to the Flash web cartoon The Legend of Luo Xiaohei by Chinese artist Mtjj (real name Zhang Ping).
The series tells the story of the spirit Luo Xiaohei, who takes the appearance of a small black cat before being adopted by a young girl. The film’s story focuses more squarely on the cat, Xiaohei, who transforms into a man and goes on to live in the forest, his carefree existence soon interrupted by the discovery that humans are beginning to encroach on that territory as their cities expand, and technological progress puts the two worlds increasingly at odds.
As the film explores more of Xiaohei’s origins, the thick, clean line-work and cute art style disguises a much grander, epic conflict at play, realized in some wildly animated fight scenes. (“Starts off small and adorable, then expands into an epic conflict on an Akira scale,” writes Tasha Robinson.) The 2D-animated film allegedly took five years to produce, Mtjj saying in an interview that the complete film, at 100 minutes, required more than 70,000 drawings—or around twelve per second.
With its gentle score and clash of the spiritual world with the modern, the environmentally conscious work of Studio Ghibli comes to mind, as does the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender (perhaps the most popular consideration of East Asian spirituality in the West, especially with its resurgence of popularity thanks to Netflix). The Legend of Hei enjoyed an extremely lucrative run in China in late 2019 thanks to the original cartoon’s sizeable fanbase at home. No news yet on who will pick the film up in the West.

ON-GAKU: Our Sound Directed by Kenji Iwaisawa / Expected to release late 2020
Rotoscoped by hand over a period of seven years, the independently produced anime ON-GAKU: Our Sound has a rather appropriate match of creator and subject: a film about amateur musicians made by amateur animators.
Director Kenji Iwaisawa adapted the film from Hiroyuki Ohashi’s cult manga, and there’s a charm to the rudimentary style of its art, the plain faces of its characters resembling the designs of something like ONE’s Mob Psycho 100, while also matching that show’s deadpan, oddball sense of humor. The laid-back voice acting only adds to that effect, as main character Kenji and his cohort’s obvious excitement flattened into a consistently amusing monotone.
It’s not quite a classic tale of underdog artistry, as the group never really gets better, but the film embraces the primordial noise that emerges whenever they pick up an instrument. Iwaisawa takes the characters seriously, showing their raucous and unconventional performances with complete sincerity. “Loved the deadpan humor and appreciated the message about how art can act as an impetus for positive change in our lives,” writes Dan.
Passion, companionship and collaboration is what’s most important to Our Sound. It’s a deeply weird film, but one filled with great ambition and visual wonder, increasing in boldness as it goes. The different styles of coloring and expression that emerge beyond its initial palettes are radical enough to catch anyone off guard.

Connected Directed by Michael Rianda / Releasing in most territories in October 2020 (October 23 in the US)
Connected is the next step for Sony Animation as it moves in an exciting new direction (the studio recently stated that it would be green-lighting more animation aimed at adults). Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, off the back of their immensely popular film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Connected is imbued with the same kind of idiosyncrasy and innovation that made Spider-Verse a mega-hit.
From first-time feature director Michael Rianda, best known for his work on TV’s Gravity Falls, Connected is a family-road-trip-AI-apocalypse movie, based on the bizarre chemistry of Rianda’s own family. Formerly known as The Mitchells vs The Machines, the film looks at the push and pull between technology and human relationships, and how different generations respond to the ongoing changes in how we interact online and personally.
While this isn’t animated “on twos” (where each frame of character animation holds for two frames of background movement) as Spider-Verse often was, Connected also attempts to maintain a ‘drawn’ quality in its art. Characters move fluidly, but with clear outlines drawn from simple shapes. There’s also a strong contrast between the lived-in detail of human habitats versus the stark minimalism of the domain of the robots.
Thankfully the clips from the film don’t look nearly as finger-wavy and luddite as the trailers might suggest. (They appear to take the Boomer point of view that technology unequivocally ruins everything, but we know it’s more complicated than “screens bad”). In any case, it looks like the beginning of an interesting run for Sony Animation, and I’m keen to see how it turns out.
Tumblr media
The Summit of the Gods (Le Sommet des Dieux) Directed by Patrick Imbert / Due to release 2021
Le Sommet des Dieux distinguishes itself in this list by being the one most firmly grounded in reality, but it’s by no means less wondrous. Based on Jirô Taniguchi’s five-volume manga Le Sommet des Dieux—itself based on the 1998 novel by Baku Yumemakura—the story starts with the question of whether George Mallory died going up or coming down the summit of Mount Everest on June 8, 1924. 70 years later, Fukamachi, a young Japanese reporter, stumbles across a camera potentially belonging to Mallory, and embarks on an adventure of his own with his friend Hasu Joji.
In close collaboration with the mangaka Taniguchi-san, who passed away during development, director Patrick Imbert seeks to replicate his art style, which was more aligned with that of European comics than traditional manga, with less exaggerated and highly detailed line-work. The team also looked outward from Taniguchi-san’s art, to the character designs of works such as Hiroyuki Okiura’s Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, as well as his 2011 film A Letter To Momo, and the films of the late, great Satoshi Kon.
From what I saw at Annecy, there’s something of a mix between what Imbert calls the “documented detail” of Taniguchi-san’s work and simpler design for the larger urban spaces. To accomplish this, the studio draws its traditional 2D using modern techniques, such as “movie-style” framing—locations and interiors created in 3D software and then overpainted for detail, identity and authenticity.
The Summit of the Gods also seeks to recapture the detailed and subtle realism of Yumemakura-san’s depiction of George Mallory, with low-key voice performances conducted in shared sessions; recording movements and hiring a boom operator to make the sound more akin to live action, perhaps even more natural. Though production has already been long, the studio had thankfully pre-empted the long delays of Covid-19, so let’s hope we get to see the film with our own eyes, soon.

Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds Directed by Benoît Chieux / Scheduled for 2022
An original fable from animation director Benoît Chieux, Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds is still very much in the midst of production, with an expected release in 2022. It looks captivating; a surreal tale set in an imaginary kingdom with delicate and clearly defined artwork, about a being named Sirocco, a despised figure with the power to control the wind, who is forced into solitude by the denizens of this world.
The dream kingdom resembles a Spirited Away-esque land, with its own hierarchy and bizarre set of rules, mundanity mixed in with visual wonder. Flying crocodiles, living houses and strange humanoids populate it, and the main characters, a pair of girls named Carmen and Juliette, turn into cats themselves. All are drawn with wavy lines, soft colours and fluid movement, the surreal presented with an inviting rather than foreboding air.

Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Directed by Hideaki Anno and others / 2020 release delayed; keep an eye on the official Twitter account for a new date
Hideaki Anno is set to bring his earth-shaking Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise to a close, again, with the fourth instalment of his ‘Rebuild’ series of films, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0. Delayed for almost a decade now (the previous instalment came out in 2012!), and delayed again by Covid-19, the film looks to close out a grand rewriting of the original series that shot Anno-san and former studio Gainax to fame—“Bye Bye, All of Evangelion” the tagline reads. But we’re gonna have to wait a while longer to bid this final farewell.
Made with co-director Kazuya Tsurumaki (who has served as director with Anno-san since the original series), the first ‘Rebuild’ film, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, seemed to be a fairly conventional remake, updating the visuals and score with more modern techniques. The story starts the same: the isolated, depressed and self-loathing teenager Shinji Ikari is forced by his absentee father to help fight the mysterious, giant, alien ‘Angels’ by getting in an equally mysterious big robot called an Evangelion (“Eva” for short). He finds no self-fulfilment in this, and if anything, the close contact with other people only seems to push him further into himself. So far, so familiar.
However, the second film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, veered completely off the rails in the best way possible, destroying audience preconceptions. The line between sequel and remake was fascinatingly blurred, and only continued to get weirder with Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, as the story landed in completely unfamiliar territory, altering its characters beyond recognition while adding entirely new characters in the process. It’s now almost impossible to predict what 3.0 + 1.0 will be. The only footage available so far was a wild ten-minute clip in which the Eiffel Tower is wielded as a weapon by an Eva. We were this close.
Tumblr media
Ayumu Watanabe’s ‘Children of the Sea’ (2019).
There are almost too many gifts, even just from Annecy alone, to describe at length. A couple more worth mentioning: Anja Daiman’s musical comedy The Island looks fascinating for its reclamation of the colonialist story of Robinson Crusoe; and Yuta Murano’s first anime feature Our Seven-Day War promises plenty of plot twists amidst the actions of rebellious youth. A range of beguiling short films were also on display—a selection helpfully compiled here by Letterboxd member Iknow.
Outside of Annecy, other films are finally arriving, virtually or otherwise—such as Gints Zilbalodis’s peculiar and quiet Away, and Ayumu Watanabe’s beautiful and surreal Children of the Sea (with music from none other than Joe Hisaishi!). Though not all animation is comfort food by default—it is simply a medium, after all—it’s reassuring knowing that animated films are able to continue, in some form, through the pandemic.

This or That Trope Tag
Thanks @rumpixel for tagging me :D I'm that kind of person that when they think about their own story ideas, they're like "yeah, no, we can't have that. Too cliche. " and when I'm reading other people's stories I adore all the tropes. With a burning passion.
Slow Burn OR Love at First Sight
Yes. The good stuff. Let it simmer lightly and then let it explode at some point. Please. I need it.
Fake Dating OR Secret Dating
Both fantastic.
Enemies to Lovers OR Best Friends to Lovers
I mean come on. I'm a sucker for bantering, and arguments, and heated discussions. I love it when both parties become more acquainted to one another and there is just this "what if"-feelings that are killing me every time. And all of the tension!!! Yes. Good stuff.
Oh No There’s Only One Bed OR Long-Distance with Correspondence
Gotta go with both (this will happen a bunch of times...). Dont know how many times I've enjoyed the "only one bed trope", I lost count. Also read a great novel about two people accidentally start corresponding to one another via E-Mail in the most hilarious and in the end heartbreaking way.
Hurt/Comfort OR Amnesia
Just. Both. All these feels.
Fantasy AU OR Modern AU
Why decide when you can enjoy both?!
Mutual Pining OR Domestic Bliss
I do enjoy domestic bliss, but I enjoy the excruciating way towards it way more. Will you two PLEASE just admit it?! This is good pain!!!
Smut OR Fluff
Both. Either separate or together.
Canon Compliant with Missing Scene OR Fix-It Fic
Might have read some fix-it fics without my knowledge that's that what they were... huh.
Alternate Universe OR Future Fic
That's my jam.
One-Shot OR Multi-Chapter
If I like it. I'll read it. Sometimes I'm a little sad when a One-Shot is over too soon. But most of the times, they end just perfectly tly the way they are. And sometimes Multi-Chapter stories are too stretched. (How many One Piece Manga are out there currently?!)
Kid Fic OR Roadtrip
Sharing a ride with a stranger or your dumbass friends. Buckle up, cause that's gonna be a disaster fun experience for everyone.
Reincarnation OR Character Death
*cough* 90% of my own stories involve either or both of those. Yeah. Huge fan of that. Even if it hurts.
Arranged Marriage OR Accidental Marriage
Both amazing.
High School Romance OR Middle-Aged Romance
I'm only 27 yet ;-; . Ask me in 20 years again, maybe my mind will have changed then.
Time Travel OR Isolated Together
Yup.
Neighbours OR Roommates
Yup.²
Sci-fi AU or Magic AU
I mean. I like sci-fi, but I never read any story that has been turned to a sci-fi universe. Wait, do stories count that are originally sci-fi to begin with???
Anyway, Magic and witchcraft. Gimme.
Bodyswap OR Genderbend
Brilliant. Superb.
Angst OR Crack
Make. Me. Cry. And. Dread. Existence. Okay? Good.
Apocalyptic OR Mundane
Yup.³
Tagging: @silvermalkin @a-humble-narcissus @fairyofsomething and whoever wants to play as well. :3

A Moment in Time Chapter 4
Adrien’s jaw dropped from slight bewilderment at why such a gorgeous girl would randomly sit down at his table and start talking away. The only problem? His name wasn’t Adam.
AU- Alya sets Marinette up on a blind date with a guy named Adam, but after a phone incident and the time change, she ends up crashing at a different table thinking it’s her date.
Chapter 3/12?  maybe more?
Tagged per request: rosalind2013
A.n.- I think I'm going to repeat how thankful I am for you guys every single chapter because you blow me away with the support this story is getting. It humbles me and makes me work harder to produce a better chapter for you. A couple of things before we start.
1.) There was lots of debate of what Adrien's job was last chapter. He is a Paramedic. Now where I live ( and other places too) there are two kinds, one works out of the hospital and the other has stations that take calls just like firefighters and take calls 24/7. Hopefully, that clears some stuff up.
2. For those of you that haven't noticed, there's a question mark in the chapters. The story has expanded a bit. (Currently, I think it's going to be 12 chapters but that might change so I left it). Yay more chapters.
3. A shoutout to Mermaidyarn and The Novel Artist, because of them, an extra plot element was added that I think everyone would approve of. I know I had fun doing research for it.
“So, what’s about Adrien?” Marinette asked unsure how to start this impromptu conversation. There wasn’t any etiquette that she knew of regarding a stranger visiting you late at night. She ventured back into the kitchen to put the kettle on the stove after offering Nathalie tea.
“Maybe you should take a seat Mlle Dupain-Cheng.” From the moment she met Nathalie, her cold demeanor, Marinette could tell that this wouldn’t be a pleasant conversation. She took a seat anyway. “I’m going to cut to the chase. M. Agreste wants to offer you a deal.”
“Deal?” she echoed. “What kind of deal, surely there’s nothing that he would want from me.” M. Agreste had all the influence needed to get anything that he wanted. She owned a bakery there was nothing-
“M. Agreste is concerned about his son and the kind of people that his son would spend time with.” Her head still spun from the knowledge that Adrien was her favorite designer’s son. It added some light for another reason he didn’t share his name right away; he might be concerned that she would treat him differently. She should have realized it sooner, but it had been years since he graced the pages of magazines.
“What does this have to do with me?” She stumbled over her words unsure of the direction of the conversation.
“My employer is prepared to pay generously to make the proper influences stay in, or in your case, out, of Adrien’s life.” Her body turned to lead, and for once she was thankful that she was seated.
“Let me get this straight,” she started. “M. Agreste sent you in the middle of the night to bribe me to stay away from his son because he deems me a bad influence?” This couldn’t be happening. “Might I ask what was so despicable about my behavior that caused him to think I’m corrupting his son?” She spat back as her anger levels increased.
“I’m not privy to that information,” Nathalie’s stiff tone provided room for doubt. “He noticed that you had traveled to the bank recently for a loan to open another store.” Nathalie offered out a check. “I’m sure you’ll find this more than satisfactory to cover the gap.” Marinette’s eyes drifted over the paper- that was a lot of zeroes.
“You need to leave,” the tremors laced through her words. “Now.”
“I beg your pardon.” Judging by her body language, she never got asked to leave before.
“Adrien is perfectly capable of choosing his own friends. Not that it’s any of your business, but we are not talking right now, but if that changes that will be between Adrien and me.” Nathalie stood up grabbing the check along with her.
“I’d advise you not to anger him Mlle Dupain-Cheng, M. Agreste is not a patient man. I’ll give you another chance and inform him that you shall think about his offer. It could do big things for your bakery, especially since you two are not corresponding currently.” She placed her card on the table in front of Marinette nodded curtly and headed straight for the door.
Tikki couldn’t help but push her worry into her baking. Marinette left at 10 to travel across town for a cake tasting, but even before she left, she wasn’t acting her usual self. She forgot who she was meeting with several times throughout the hour, pulled a batch of underbaked croissants out of the oven, not to mention misplaced her keys. Not that Marinette would confess if anything did bother her, but Tikki began to wonder if her behavior was caused by the Adrien news finally settling in. It didn’t take much to see that she liked Adrien, what he did must have really affected her. Tikki didn’t usually speak up too much, but she knew that if the two got over this hump that the pair could make each other happy. The bell above the door chimed signaling a customer, Tikki quickly gathered the remaining dough and slid it into the fridge. She only made the couple steps to the doorframe when she stopped, and a gasp escaped her lips.
Why was he here?
Tikki thought that after they left the bakery that she wouldn’t see either of the boys again, but there he stood in the bakery, Adrien’s friend. She ruffled down the front of her apron and nervously smoothed the hairs that shifted out of place. She rationalized that she would have done the same for any customer, not just ones she found cute.
“How may I help you?” She asked in her usual chipper voice. When she saw his mouth parted and eyes widened, she regretted it. Perhaps she could tone her tone; she had been told before that her excitement over baked goods intimidated people.
“Uh-I was looking for”- For a reason that she couldn’t put her finger on, her heart sunk. That’s why he was here, for Marinette, it didn’t have anything to do with her.
“She’s not here,” she finished his thought for him.
“Who?” The general confusion in his voice brought her attention to his melt-worthy green eyes. Not that she would ever admit to that.
“Marinette.”
“Well,” he squinted to read her name tag, “Tikki, I’m actually here to finally taste the pastries Adrien keeps raving about. He doesn’t even know that I’m here.”
“Oh,” her gaze shot down to her feet hoping if she could focus enough she could slip into the floor. “The cheese ones, right?” The order came swiftly to mind; not many customers ordered three pastries with the intent not to share.
“Some of the best kinds, if you ask me.”
“I’m more partial towards the ones with the raspberry jam myself.” She pulled back the glass to gain access to the pastries.
“Well, that makes sense because you’re so sweet.” Tikki stopped mid-reach and glanced up this time a confident smirk on her face.
“Does that make you cheesy?” Normally she would never flirt with the customers, but this one time could be an exception.
“Only in the best way possible...and if it means that I can take you out this weekend.”
Tikki blinked in surprise at his boldness before turning away to box the food and hide the growing heat in her face.
“No, it doesn’t,” she replied. Marinette would kill her if she said yes, especially with where things were up in the air with Adrien.
“Oh,” Tikki turned to see his facial features sink in disappointment. She didn’t want to leave him there. Out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted a sharpie and grabbed it. Her number followed by several digits were placed on the box before Plagg even noticed.
“But you can have my number.” The way his face lit up caused a small flutter in her chest.
“I’ll see you around, Cookie.” A wink accompanied the nickname.
“Cookie?” She called out. “Is that just because I work in a bakery?” If that was the case, it didn’t impress her in the least.
“I’ll only tell you if you agree to that date with me.” As tempting as giving in to her curiosity was, she had to keep her boss in mind. She already flirted with the line when she handed out her number.
“I think I can handle the torture of not knowing.” She places her hand on her lip to emphasize her answer, but it didn’t faze him.
“Suit yourself, Cookie.” Plagg slipped out, and Tikki found she needed the counter as support for her wobbly knees. Moments later her phone dinged with a message from an unknown number. It contained a picture of the empty box and three words that skyrocketed her pulse with excitement.
See you tomorrow.
“No way!” Adrien crossed his arms across his chest. “You can count me out; there’s no way I’m doing something that embarrassing.” In retrospect, he should have seen this coming. The meeting for the annual fundraiser for charity always landed around this time of the year. Bad ideas always got tossed around, and this one was no different. Adrien never imagined a sexy EMT calendar idea would ever make it to the meeting where the chief would sit in, and yet, here they were.
“Come on Adrien,” Charlie prodded teasingly. “It’s for charity! Think of all the good you can pour back into the community and all you have to do pose for a couple of photos. How is this any different from your modeling career when you were younger?” Adrien’s body stiffened. He had concealed that information to avoid being relentlessly teased. There was no way that they could have found out — the one person who knew was Plagg.
“This is very different!” Adrien tried to argue, but by the look on their faces, no one believed him.
“You had teenage girls gawking at you then, and you’ll have women ogling you now.” James piped in.
“And besides the guys took a vote to put you on the cover, and Chief already approved it,” Luc replied. It was evident by the groans and eye rolls that it should have remained a secret. Adrien’s eyes bolted wide. It was one thing to participate, but if you were featured on the cover, you were the face of the campaign.
“What?!”
“Let me talk some sense into him.” Plagg guided him away before he could give them a piece of his mind. Once the trucks have them some privacy, Adrien slugged his friend in the arm.
“Ouch! What was that for?”
“You promised you wouldn’t tell them!” He hissed in annoyance.
“I didn’t! A single internet search can reveal all your deep dark photo shoots in more damaging ways than I can.” Adrien would be inclined to believe him if he hadn’t been his friend for the last couple of years.
“You left the site up for them to see.” He started as a fact as everything clicked together in his brain.
“It may have randomly pulled up after I heard rumors that they wanted me to be on the cover,” he confessed.
“Plagg!”
“Think of it this way; you could use it to win over bakery girl.” Adrien’s anger stilled at the nickname.
“Marinette?” He echoed. “How?”
“Think about it. If Marinette sees you in a calendar where you ooze your sex appeal, she won’t be able to resist you.” Plagg held up His hands in front of his person to prevent another punch.
“Like that will ever happen,” Adrien snorted, “Marinette isn’t like that.”
“She has eyes, doesn’t she?” Plagg shot back defensively. “Besides, it’s not like your plan is working spectacularly.” Adrien opened to shoot back a snarky remark when he realized that Plagg was right. He had put forth flowers, and it got him kicked out of her bakery. He had nothing left to lose.
“Fine, I’ll do it,” he growled. “But there’s a flaw in your ‘master plan,’ she might not even see it.”
A ding filled the air, and Plagg’s lips tucked back into a smirk not needing to look to know the sender. “Let me handle that.”
Marinette forced on a smile while trying not to look at her phone. Their first coffee date had gone so well she found herself hopeful among all of Alya’s ‘I told you so.’ Tonight, was far from what she imagined. Adam arrived late which he explained away with work. She didn’t mind that; it was everything after that that slowly worked on her nerves.
Adam had suggested this hot new sushi place that had opened recently. And Marinette held back a cringe. It wasn’t that she didn’t like sushi, it more had to do with the texture of it. She forced it down when she had to, but not ideal for a date. She confessed her feelings for the food and suggested a couple of other places they could go instead. The date ended abruptly by Adam’s boss calling, and he had to high tail it to the office for a prominent client.
Imagine her surprise when they pulled up to the sushi restaurant. Her lips pressed into a thin line but didn’t say anything as she got out of the car. He flashed a warm smile, but it did nothing to lift her mood.
“Marinette?” Her head snapped up to meet his gaze. “Is everything ok? You’ve barely touched your food.”
“I just don’t like it all that much,” she confessed. Hopefully, the words would prompt Adam to remember when she explicitly told him that she didn’t care for sushi.
“We’ll get it sent back. Here, have some of mine instead. It’s delicious.” He switched plates and called over a waiter before she could object. The thought might have been sweet if the sushi wasn’t the problem in the first place. “So, how’s planning for that cook-off going.”
“Baking competition,” she corrected. Cook-off made it sound like a competitive barbecue. “I’m still working on the right combination. I was thinking of maybe doing something with chocolate and raspberries because-“ she slowed watch him lose interest being pulled back into his work phone.
A sigh left her lips as she fought the urge to get up and leave despite being all the way across the city. They had such a good time on their first date; she didn’t know what happened. Maybe he acted like this when things became too stressful at work. She’d hate to write him off over one lousy date.
“Adam?” He looked up at her call. “I’m not feeling well. Is there any way we could do a rain check?” It would be best to put the night behind them and start over on a different day.
“Absolutely,” he chirped. “Just let me flag down the waiter for the check.”
Adam dropped her off at home, and immediately she took off to her second home. Marinette sat on at an open table within her closed bakery glancing back to the kitchen wondering how many batches she could cook before her body would give out for the day. She glanced at her phone almost wishing that Adrien would have texted her today. Despite how silly the text was, it brought a smile every time she read them. Her phone only had one text from Adam claiming how good a time he had.
If only the feelings were mutual.
She at least had a better time with Adam than Kim, but that didn’t say much. It seemed that work texts or emails kept getting in the way and that caused him not to listen. Marinette was sure he had to be a good guy, they had to go where there were no distractions.
She couldn’t help but allow her mind to drift back to Adrien throughout the meal. There was no doubt that she had more fun with him than Adam the only downside to Adrien was that his father hated her guts enough to offer money to stay away. The thought crushed any childhood idea she had that if she got back into design that one day she could work at Gabriel’s with enough work.
As alluring as the money was, she would find another way to get the money for the bakery. She wouldn’t be pushed around and told who and who not she could be friends with. By the way, Nathalie spoke it sounded like M Agreste was under the impression that deeper feelings were there; that couldn’t be true though. They only had one date. The first impression was important, but not everything. Cheeks flushed she pulled another part of her muffin off and placed it in her mouth. Out of the corner of her eye, passing through the window was something very blonde and familiar. His hands were shoved in his pocket and eyes trained on the ground as he walked; he probably didn’t even realize she was there.
She shot up from her seat. If fate brought him to her, how could she pass up the opportunity? Her feet tripped over themselves as she raced to the door- screw M. Agreste’s potential wrath.
“Adrien!” She called out, his name leaving a honey taste on her lips. She missed talking to him.
The man spun around with no hesitation at the sound of her voice. Marinette’s eyes lingered on his face for a second. The area resting under his eyes were bagged; he looked like he hadn’t gotten much sleep, a feeling she could relate with.
“What are you doing?” Not her best question after the way they parted. He blinked at her his head tilted slightly.
“Going for a walk,” he strained his reply. “Uh-I didn’t think you would be in the bakery this late.” Marinette felt the echoes of her heart fluttering as he stepped toward her. “I’ll start taking another way. I’m sorry if I bothered you.”
Marinette ignored his last sentence hoping that her invitation would answer that question. “I was just about to make a practice batch for the competition...would you like to join me?”
“You mean it?”
“I mean-I don’t want to interrupt your walk.” Marinette had to bite her tongue so she wouldn’t ramble, “I wanted some company.”
“Then I am all yours.” The way he said yours caused goosebumps to litter her arm. Even if this was a bad idea, it was too late to go back now.
An hour later the pair were doubled over in laughter not even noticing the blotches of flour remained from their playful war earlier that night. Adrien currently entertained them with funny stories of calls he had been dispatched on.
“We got the call, and I thought I heard wrong. The dispatcher said that some teenager had sustained some head injury from falling off a lion. But we got directed towards the zoo.” Adrien was reveling in this feeling. Every time he looked over she was engaged listening on bated breath.
“No way,” she swatted at his arm playfully almost causing him to mess up the story.
“Three teenagers decided it would be an amazing idea to break into the zoo and get up close and personal with the animals.”
“What made decide to be a paramedic?” A soft, sad smile appeared as his eyes fell to the table instead of her.
“I love helping people when they need it. No matter what the outcome I know I did everything I could to save them.” When he felt a warm hand slid on top of his Adrien’s eyes jumped up to hers.
“I think it’s amazing what you do for the city.” Despite the reassurance she provided with a squeeze, Adrien still skeptically scoffed.
“I don’t think my father would agree. He thinks I’m much better suited running the empire that he built.”
“I’m sure you’re more than capable of doing that too, but if you enjoy what you do, it hardly feels like work.” Marinette jumped when Adrien’s thumb started stroking the edge of her hand lovingly.
“Thank you,” he murmured. The moment shattered when the timer rang signaling the end of the cooling period. Marinette removed two pieces, but before she could taste her creation, Adrien reached out and tugged on her arm.
“Wait, I have an idea, and we need to do this right.” He acquires a perplexed look as he began wrapping a nearby clean towel.
“Adrien”- her vision darkened. “How am I supposed to eat it?”
“Leave that to me.” She wasn’t aware that he shifted until his hot breath lingered outside her ear. “Your senses are heightened this way. Have I ever led you astray...in culinary matters.” Even though he couldn’t see, Marinette rolled her eyes, and her lips released a giggle.
“Ok, I trust you, but no funny business.” She gasped when his hands gently grabbed either side of her shoulders. “No funny business,” he confirmed, but she could hear his smile. He guided her a few more steps, and she felt the stool, so she sat down grateful that she didn’t fall in doing so. Her ears picked up the sounds of the fork gently scraping against the plate.
“Open,” he whispered, and she immediately complied. The chocolate and peanut butter flavor danced on her taste buds leaving joy in their wake. Marinette released a hum of appreciation, but it ended in more of a moan.
Adrien was a train wreck, he thought this would be one of his better ideas, but the second that sound hit his ears, he was a goner. His eyes darted down to a crumble that rested on her lip and swallowed hard. She was close enough to close the gap without a second thought. He daydreamed what it would be like, but his promise to her kept him from acting on it.
“You got something...” his voice trailed away not trusting himself at the moment. He gently ran his finger along her lip knocking the morsel free. He jerked his hand back to the side afraid he let his touch linger too long. “Uh- How was it?”
“Perfect,” Marinette struggled to maintain the illusion of control in her voice. “I think it’s the base of recipes”- In the process of standing up, she didn’t realize how close he had been until she slid off the temporary blindfold. Adrien eyes wide mouth parted slightly, and conflicting emotions conflicted emotions stamped on his features.
“That’s great,” he replied but made no effort to create more distance between them.
“Yeah,” Marinette caved and let her eyes flicker down to his lips for only a second. “Adrien,” she leaned in, and he followed suit just as their lips brushed-Alya’s ringtone acted as an ice bucket splashing the two back to reality. Marinette’s cheeks exploded with color as she slipped around him and fumbled to lift the phone to her ear.
“Hey Alya,” Adrien’s focus turned to the floor not wanting to eavesdrop, but on the other hand, it was hard to ignore when she was right there. “I’m at the bakery.” She paused, and he managed to look up just enough to time to see him glance her way. “My date went fine, Alya…no, I’m not brushing you off. I don’t want to talk about it right now.” Adrien couldn’t stop his heart from sinking off the high he experienced moments ago.
She had Adam.  How could he forget?
If she had another date with Adam that meant that there was something between them, and he- almost ruined that.
Guilt ripped at his insides. He couldn’t interfere if Marinette held any feelings for Adam he had to step back. He’d rather be her friend than not have her in his life at all.
When she rounded back, the look she sported screamed injured puppy, and his stomach turned to lead.
“I’m sorry-“ he held out a hand to stop her from going any further.
“I’m the one that’s sorry. We got caught up in a moment,” Adrien paused internally cursing at what he was about to do. Plagg would yell at him later, but he started this off with a lie. He needed to be honest with her if he wanted any chance of a relationship in the future.
“I like you.” Probably more than I should, he mentally added. “But for now, I think it’s best if we’re friends.” The word tasted bitter on his tongue. He couldn’t be the reason their relationship wouldn’t work.
“Friends?” She echoed bewildered.
“I still want to spend time with you.”
As much as you’ll give me.
“But I know you still have Adam, but I was thinking friends hang out, so I was hoping that maybe we could go on a friend date.” He stopped before his word vomit could fully activate.
“I’d like that.” Her smile radiated off her sending warmth through his body. “It’s getting late; I should probably go home.”
“Can I walk you?” His question born out of gut instinct. He didn’t want their time to end. “You shouldn’t be walking the streets this late by yourself.”
“I would love to, but my car is right there.” His heart deflated as they stepped out into the night air.
“Goodnight, Marinette.”
“Goodnight.” There was a pause as she fiddled with her car keys. “Adrien?”
“Yes?” She closed the gap and pressed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
“Thank you.” He barely caught sight of the subtle blush on her features.
“You’re welcome,” he stood there until her car drove off before he lifted his hand to his cheek. The kiss lingered, and Adrien found he couldn’t break his dopey grin. Maybe there was hope after all.
Adrien unlocked the door and pushed his way into his apartment. Within moments he heard a soft sound. “I know I’m home later than I promised, I’m sorry.” Where he picked up the habit of talking to his cat, he didn’t know, but every time he did he felt less alone.
Another chorus of meows endured.
“But I can’t wait to tell you all about my night.” Adrien continued through the motions of opening the cat food and pouring it into the bowl. “She’s amazing Chat; I wish you could meet her; you would like her.” A glum sigh slipped through his lips. Although a friend date was less than a real date, it beat her not talking to him at all.
“I could talk to her for hours.” He sunk back into the couch allowing his mind to replay the events of the night over and over. It got interrupted by Chat tracing his side flicking his tail in Adrien’s face. “Alright, I get it bud.” He scooped the black cat into his lap and began to stroke him earning a purr. The movement released his stress he pent up, about his father, the calendar and Marinette. The world faded leaving only him and his cat cuddled on the couch slowly allowing sleep to claim him.

JPDE's 2nd Birthday - The Birth, the End and the Break
Tumblr media
Hello, thar, Meinos Kaen here… And today is JPDE’s 2nd birthday.
By birthday I mean the day I first had the idea for the overall story, thanks to a good long-time friend of mine that on the JPDE Discord server goes by the name of Penny –sic-. I had debated about maybe considering the birthday the release of the first demo, or of Version 1.0 but I thought I’d be completely honest and true with you guys. Also so I can weave you the tale of the game’s origins.
THE BIRTH OF JPDE
I didn’t get into RWBY until after the end of season 3. I was aware of its existence, I had heard about Rooster Teeth but I never got into any of their products. I knew of RvB but I was never into Machinima videos. Achievement Hunter? I prefer playing videogames instead of watching people play them –but I will tune in for good commentary even if I don’t always completely agree with the points made, shoutout to Jim Sterling, Yathzee and TotalBiscuit (rest in peace)-.
The first contact I had with RWBY was actually the Yang VS Tifa Deathbattle, a video with an outcome that even RWBY fans pretty much all agreed was bullshit and immediately made me not interested. I had friends who were fans, though, one of which was Penny. She tried many times to get me interested in RWBY, to the point that I pretty much knew the whole plot before even watching an episode. Still, she never managed to stir the embers of interest.
Until she showed me Penny –the character-. A fan-art of her, then her official sketches, and damn. Penny is still, by far, one of the best character designs I have ever seen in animation. Then she showed me the episode where she appeared and I was hooked. So cute! So freckly! So pure! So OMGGIANTLASERWTF!
Tumblr media
Then, after getting me on board… She told me Penny was dead, after I had already gotten to Season 3! THAT CHEATER!  So I got moody and eventually turned to my favourite coping mechanism… Imagination.
Hitting ideas off my friend and just shooting the shit about how Penny deserved more friends, maybe her own team, maybe someone who loved her, and a partner. Those talks gave birth to the concepts for David, Evelyn and Jack, and eventually to Team WHIT too.
Those conversations actually turned to a roleplay, but I have always been a writer first and foremost so I thought ‘hey, this could actually make a nice fanfiction’. Been writing fanfiction since I was 14, so the progression was natural.
Then, I remembered something else. I had been experimenting and using RenPy randomly on and off for years but I had never actually put my ass in gear and just made something… Then I realized I wanted to make a Visual Novel out of it. I wanted to make a story where Penny didn’t die and I didn’t just want to write it, I wanted to code it.
I started thinking about making monthly releases of it right off the bat, budgeting certain amounts of money out of my own pocket. That only lasted for a couple months before I opened the Patreon for JPDE and, my god, the support I received has been unbelievable. All for a little fan-game born out of love for a redheaded row-boat. I’m humbled every minute of every day by the all too real support I’ve been getting.
Two years later, JPDE is still going strong and I’ve even managed to start working on original projects of mine. I can’t thank you guys enough for the support you’ve been showing me…
And today, as year two comes to a close, it’s time to discuss year three. It’s time to discuss the road to the end-game.
THE ROAD TO THE VYTAL TOURNAMENT
Tumblr media
As you may already know if you've been playing the game, the School Life part of JPDE will end with day 183, which is going to be the weekend of the Vytal Dance, corresponding to the RWBY Vol2 episode Dance Dance Infiltration, and then the events of the Breach of Vale City. On that weekend it's when the end-game starts.
On the weekend of the dance, instead of choosing who to go on a date with, you'll be asked who to bring to the dance out of all the characters you've been on four dates with. Once made, that choice can't be changed, and other than the dance it will influence how certain events will play out in Breach and during the events of the Vytal Festival.
The choices are mutually exclusive, meaning that once you've chosen one character it will be like all the other dates won’t have happened –unless it’s a threesome/moresome route, ahem-. If you choose Silhouette-chan, it will be like you will always only have gone on dates with her. I’ve stated in the past that JPDE’s route dates are like schrodinger’s cat. The dance invitation is like opening the door.
There are however, certain exceptions, which I will refer to as complementary characters. The dates of these characters will still count as having happened even if you choose someone else for the dance and will influence some events during the end-game. So far, those characters are:
Neopolitan
Qrow Branwen
Pyrrha Nikos (Optional)
Cinder Fall
The more dates you get with these characters, the more they will influence the end-game, even if you decide to not bring them to the dance. Also, they will interact with other certain characters’ stories in certain ways if you bring those other certain characters to the dance.
Got all that? Good, because now we come to…
END GAME DEVELOPMENT
Tumblr media
Once we hit day 183, I will change how I release content for the game. Since I won’t be able to measure the progress in weeks any longer, I will just release as much as I can manage each month. But there’s also something else that is specific to the ‘date routes’ part: I will only ever work on one character’s end-game at any given time, exception made for the complementary ones.
What does that mean? It means that, when we first hit day 183, I will have a poll asking you to decide which character out of the ones currently at four dates you want me to work on. I will then work on that character’s end-game only until completion, then open another poll to decide which character to work on next.
This, of course, on top of the usual two dates a month and the story progression, provided that we keep a sufficient level of Patreon funding.
IN CONCLUSION
At this rate of releasing and updating, we’re going to reach day 183 probably on JPDE’s third birthday. So you have one year to get as many people as possible up to four dates before the final battle to decide who’s going to get the first end-game focused round of development. That final vote will be PATREON EXCLUSIVE. I repeat, ONLY PATRONS WILL BE ABLE TO VOTE ON THAT POLL AND ANY SUBSEQUENT ONES REGARDING END-GAME CONTENT.
And with that, I now officially declare fourth dates available to be nominated and voted for in New Route Events polls. All other rules, particularly the ones regarding Team RWBY and Team JPDE characters, stay in place.
Tumblr media
Papa loves you, papa thanks you and I will talk to you soon. Put a mark on your calendar, prepare, plan, look for allies… Because we’re now entering Year Three of JPDE. And the stakes have never been higher…
- Meinos Kaen
Ah, also...
P.S. - SEPTEMBER BREAK
BunnyVoid, our background artist, has recently suffered a death in the family. ArsonicArtz is going to Japan and Papa is going to France and Poland in September.
Considering these circumstances, there will be a small break in September. Meaning that the September release will only contain the new dates.

Analysis Instrument Ideas to Persuade Your Professor
Tumblr media
Harmonious of the criterion a teacher sticks to in on the fritz to rank your inspect papers is the procedure it is written, namely the social code of mien produced past the prime mover’s selection of words, grammatical structures, utilization of literary devices, and all the practicable parts of phraseology use. All together, the professor evaluates your criticism style.
As a result, if you are aiming at high grades and a research gift-wrap, you should have an advantageous unorthodox distinction to the layout of your research hang wallpaper ideas in the elementary place college essay writing service.
First of all, you should know that a check out paper is a formal paper. Fashion, you should obey all the principles of formal review that allow for:
1. Knowing vocabulary;
2. Prim accent;
3. More frequent use of unshaken voice;
4. Complex sentence constructions;
5. Formal linking devices;
6. Punctuation;
7. All-inclusive presentation.
Let off the hook c detonate, look at these points at one by harmonious, so that you can assure that your inspect paper meets the requirements of the formal writing.
1. Sophisticated Vocabulary
Sophisticated vocabulary is a have to while literature a research paper. The use of thoughtful words determination patently stir the reader with your creativity, intelligence, and intimate familiarity of the research paper topic.
Still, you should not overuse sophisticated vocabulary and understandable worldly words where they do not belong. Try one’s hand at finding the yellowish average between the extremes and succeed advanced vocabulary with commonly-used words when necessary.
Firmly, in your scrutinization deed you will want to avail oneself of some unprecedented terms or references that are not relaxed to the overall audience. Your hanker after to make over your experimentation instrument a precise chic is everlastingly welcome. No matter what, be sure to delineate or make plain the terms you put into practice, undisturbed notwithstanding that you are positive that the teacher is frequent with them.
You should keep away from clichés, which are overused, colloquial and idiomatic expressions, or trite expressions that have departed their effect in meaning. Overly of utter synonyms to many a time habituated to words, and, in search of the event, make up opportunity instead of chance, or it is a notable truth to a certain extent than harry knows.
And misconstruction to the gilded in the main of expos‚ a into letter-paper, namely persuade the firm there is not a lone contraction in your analysis paper.
2. Formal Note
It is momentous that your fact-finding identification by docket has no references to yourself, such as “I think…” or “It is my conclusion that…” You should circumvent such expressions and substitute for them with indeterminate expressions by means of infinitive, or the uninterested voice. It is joined by the humour points of successful inquiry paper writing.
3. More Regular Throw away of Laid-back Participation
The dispassionate utterance of written research papers is serviceable in creating a discernment of objectivity, such as focusing distinction on the possibility of affairs acted upon. It is also effective when the issue acted upon is humble or unimportant, or if you lack to say long modifiers at the completion of the sentence.
But take care, and terminate the malleable voice where effectual should be placed. The steady make use of a tractable part obscures the interpretation and makes after boring reading. A true to life symbiosis of the pliable and effectual voices can work miracles.
4. Sentence Construction
Make steadfast your judgement period and structure. Release heterogeneous sentence constructions travesty placed in your examine writing-paper: simple sentences, worsen sentences, complex sentences, complex-compound sentences.
In formal correspondence of up on papers complex grammatical constructions are preferable. Regardless, do not get caught into an endless loop of complex sentence structures and create in your scrutinization essay cretinous sentences from time to time.
5. Formal Linking Devices
It is compulsory to vary linking devices in your probing paper. As contrasted with putting “object of example” all the everything, you can make use of “for instance”, “in special'', “especially''. To outright the meaning you can vary the expressions like consequently, ergo, as an upshot, accordingly, so, as a consequence and so on.
If you have problems with finding synonyms, do not be sluggish to go out to a library and look up the words in a dictionary. Your efforts discretion be awarded hundred times, for the variety of linking devices guarantees a silky course of speaking and a desired punch on the reader.
6. Punctuation
Every single wordsmith should turn to account punctuation in a brainy manner to bring off the intended effect. Punctuation that is purely used can fluster the reader and sabbatical him with no reprehensible notion of what your up on credentials area of study was all about.
Consequently, memorialize the following punctuation caveats in bent: a period shows a enormously separation of ideas; comma and coordinating conjunction show up such relationships as: besides, flower, consequence, place against, or cause; a semicolon reveals that the inferior merchandise ruling completes the belief that was started in the essential sentence.
In olden days you validate your research periodical pro punctuation, the lion’s apportion of investigating organ composition is completed.
7. Total presentation
The blanket conferring of a research paper counts greatly while computation; it has the power either to conquer the reader’s favor, or turn him down.
So, make it a fulfil inescapable your reader disposition be delighted at the usability of your dig into paper and come to your examine dissertation look properly. It means that, as a formal piece of poetry, your inquiry organ should not be brightly-colored or written in some unusual font. Formal novels require simplicity and accurate research papers online.
Neatly laid commission scrutiny identification b docket ideas take all chances to be approved next to your teacher.
By following the run-of-the-mill principles of sentence construction, punctuation, and vocabulary partake of, you will be adept to form a pragmatic image of yourself as a quick-witted, persuasive, and avid herself, the one who is worth getting an nonpareil declivity for their breath-taking scrutiny paper.

Circling Ways in Geomancy
In the relatively early days of my magical practice, I gathered and used a lot of things I found in the course of going on walks - bits of interestingly-shaped sticks, torn pages of books and newspapers, playing cards, scraps of fabric, that sort of thing. This seems a common enough phase for many magicians, learning to navigate their landscape and sense the subtle tides and shifts around them in those interactions. Walks around my neighbourhood, building my relationship with the spirits of place, or drifting through unfamiliar parts of town on extended augury expeditions; these rambles would lead me to find objects that seemed significant and magically useful. There was something so satisfying about finding meaning and use in things picked up off the ground; those discarded omens and overlooked materials of inner-city sorcery. For years I kept a stray white cue ball which I had found when on an extended Lunary wandering. Chalk-marked ivory globe uncannily out of place, plucked from the gutter of night, a delicate egg of veiled promise. One of my most used magical tools found in this manner was a simple set of brown seed beads strung as a necklace. I came across it while ambling along meditating on geomancy, the earth, and delineations of sacred space. Mulling over old pantheism-and/or-animism distinctions and where divining with spirits in space fit in, I found the beads lying on the floor: they were spread like a square. This demarcation of space, this establishment of a matrix of divinatory coherence, this cauldron from which new answers could be cooked up, made a lot of sense. The shape of the idea itself looped me in. I began using the strung seeds as a field upon which to throw my coins, dice, or whatever other means I was using to generate my geomantic figures. This is not to suggest I invented anything - this is simply how something was shown to me. As we shall see shortly, such a technique is far from unique to my practice. In the years since, that found cord has had a lot of play. A lot. Enough that, a month or so ago, I pulled it from its bag and saw it was - in exactly the way time’s shadow sneaks up on you - suddenly looking all too raggedy. I resolved to build some new gear. In fact I had already made short beaded “loops” - too short to be considered necklaces - dedicated to particular senior spirits in my practice, and generally adorning their statuary and icons. I would occasionally employ these to charge the divining space with their authority, especially at auspicious hours and days at which the power of these Chiefly spirits waxed crowned. I would set them out, squaring the circle - forming the four sides of the natural ‘elementated’ world from the celestial circle. These beaded circlets empowered the clarity and focus of my readings. I even found them useful for cohering the virtues of the figures I set for more sorcerous ends; combining the natural potencies of their gemstones with the operative spellcraft of displaying a figure inside them, as in the manner of image magic employing, say, Tarot cards. Rough chips of sanguine coral, the very blood of Medusa, as soldiers of scarlets and incarnadines surrounding a marked Puer in the eighth hour of Tuesday.
More broadly, this kind of altar-top circling has long been part of my practice, casting an orbit of materia magica around foci of influence and effect. The sprinkled rosemary around the purifying candle spell, the chalk around the spirit’s seal to trap or stabilise. Such circlets belt up firm foundation, spin loops to run perpetually, wind and bind. New cord and even knot magic utilities continue to reveal themselves. Even a rosary is but a garland of the threaded blooms of Love and Mystery, stirring in turns and spirals. Considering the Puck’s girdle about the world, however, I am especially interested in how spiritwork permeates these kinds of tools and techniques. So it was I decided to construct seven circlets, dedicated to the seven planetary Rulers so important to geomantic sorcery.
In more modern geomancies, diviners are often encouraged or instructed to invoke the Spirit of the planet most suitable for the question - matters of romance and sensuality on Friday, the day of Venus, for example - as part of the formal protocol of divining. Along with directing practitioners to begin their geomancy by tracing an Invoking Pentagram of Earth, Israel Regardie’s A Practical Guide to Geomantic Divination suggests the following:
‘To every planetary force in geomancy, there is attributed a Genius presiding over all matters covered by the definitions of that force… [Each genius has a] sigil, a traditional word that merely means a signature. This sigil should be very deliberately and carefully drawn in the centre of the Pentagram which has been traced. It should be visualized as clearly as possible, while vibrating his [sic] name several times, either vocally or mentally. This places the whole divinatory process under divine guidance, and opens up specific pathways to the Unconscious area which can act to provide an answer to the question.’ [Regardie, 45.]
It seems an uncontroversial consensus these days that the formal shaping of pentagrams and spirit seals of the Golden Dawn’s protocols for geomancy can be traced to John Heydon and his Theomagia. In this Temple of Wisdom (as it is not-so-humbly subtitled), when he is not quoting Agrippa whole-sale, Heydon expounds of his self-identified “Rosiecrucian way” that operators ‘first used holy Deprications, Incantations with other Rites and observations provoking and alluring Idea’s of this nature hereunto...’  [Heydon, Theomagia (London, 1668), 2-3] Here are hints of geomancy’s “high ceremonial” dimensions. Crucially however we should also note that Owen Davies has remarked that early modern village cunning-folk and local wizards, traditionally represented as the magic-users least interested in complex Neoplatonic orders and arrangements of angels, ‘would certainly appreciate the detailed practical guide to astromantic and geomantic divination, and the diagrams showing the various signs and characters of the planets and their angels’. [Davies, Popular Magic (), 124]
The senior planetary Spirits of geomancy, contrasted by Agrippa with the more angelic planetary Intelligences, are referred to by Heydon et al as the ‘seven Rulers of the Earth’. Without diving too deep into Heydon’s idiosyncratic cosmology, it is worth reiterating that Heydon hardly ever refers to the straight astrological grammar of geomancy, preferring to use the names of the spirits of those astrological principles: he does not talk about Saturn, but rather Zazel; he speaks of Malchidael not Aries. It is in his lists of correspondences attributed to these Rulers that we come across colour schemes for these spirits:
Zazel, Spirit of Saturn: ‘He ruleth over the Lead, the Load-stone, the dross of all Mettals, as also the Dust and Rubbish of every thing... He Ruleth the Saphire stone, Lapis Lazul, all black ugly sheet stones, not polishable and of a sad ashy or black colour…’
Hismael, Spirit of Jupiter: ‘that which is most pleasant and delightful without extream Colours; he signifyeth Seagreen or blew, purple, Ash colours’
Barzabel, Spirit of Mars: ‘He delighteth in Red colour, or yellow, fiery and shining like Saffron…'
Sorath, Spirit of the Sun: ‘he ruleth the Yellow, the colour of Gold, the Scarlet or the clear Red, and all reddish colours’
Kedemel, Spirit of Venus: ‘she signifieth white, or milky colour, mixed with brown or a little green’
Taphthartharath, Spirit of Mercury: ‘Mixed and new colours, the gray mixed with Sky colour, such as is on the neck of the Dove, and Pidgeon, Stock-Dove, and such fine Colours; also Lincy-Wooly colours, or… of many colours, mixed…’
Chasmodai, Spirit of the Moon: ‘Of Colours, the White, or pale Yellow, White, pale Green, or a little of the Silver colour’
Rather than simply tracing the sigils of these Spirits to centre and focus my readings, I was inspired to bead my own circlets in versions of these dedicated corresponding colours, including in the designs gemstones with virtues relevant to their planetary governances. Specifically, four stones for squaring that circle, for bringing to bear the four classical forces of the ‘elementated’ natural world with which geomancy so deeply engages. These would be a tool for further drawing on the strength, force and authority of the Rulers to provide accurate information in my readings and precise affect in my rituals.
It was in speaking about these plans to my dear friend and Tatá Quimbanda that I discovered this was in fact not a novel approach! Practitioners of Candomble and of Quimbanda have both long utilized the beaded necklaces of their traditions - ritual objects with deep significances - to mark a space for divining with shells. Elekes of Candomble, like those of Regla de Ocha and the guia de contas of Umbanda, represent a holy bond between devotee and the Orisha. Washed in sacred omiero, these beads are a sign of blessing as well as a mantle of commitment. The beads are normally worn around the throat, either diagonally or pendulously, and must encompass the heart and ideally down to the navel. This necklace connects the speaking voice and the core at the heart of us. A connection between what is ordinarily worn now on a table creates a necessary link between the Orisha’s mouths (the cowries) and your own. To divine is after all to give voice to the divine from the heart.
Similarly, the guias of Quimbanda de Raiz are washed in sorcerous amaçi and worn to foreground pacts and commitments made and to offer protection. Along with beads worn in devotion, they are also used to ensure Orisha and Exu and Pomba Gira can communicate efficiently. The guia imperial of Quimbanda is in fact required for reading shells when reading away from one’s assentamentos. My godfather describes this in terms of how it keeps the link to the spirits one has seated and works with: a temporary field of settlement allowing all Kingdoms to come through. A further innovation of these Afro-Diasporic techniques of demarcating ritual space for divination with sacred beads includes not only various different necklaces for different gods or spirits, but of constructing one large loop containing sections for each power, force, Orisha or Kingdom, such as the guia imperial pictured below.
Candomble and Umbanda-influenced practices also hold important lessons to bear in mind when comparing such so-called New World practices with the specifically planetary aspects of geomantic divination and sorcery. Earlier African significances of sevenfold divisions and heptarchies - for seven is a potent crossroads number - were later glossed through Theosophic lenses as chiefly concerning the seven classical planets. As highlighted by articles such as this, on the ‘Fundamentos de Jogo de Búzios’, this gloss can be seen in the approach to things like days of the week in such practices.
I am far from the first geomancer to cast into a corded or even beaded circlet. It is a shared technological response to the operation of geomancy, a co-impulse of many different craftsfolk of the divinatory art. Such living full-blooded traditional practices are unique instantiations of resonant approaches to patterning the geomantic crafts of ritual and truth-telling. Noting the use of circlets in this manner should not be taken as any attempt to flatline different traditions and cultures but celebrate their songs and harmonies in sharper context.
Conducting geomantic divination using these talismans dedicated to the Seven Rulers of the Earth, emblazoned in their heraldic colours and bearing stones of empowering virtue, has already focused my readings, has brought planetary virtues of both stability and dynamism to bear. They have begun to assist my understanding of the unique natures of these Spirits as more than cookie-cutter planetary entities. These geomantic circlets have also certainly improved the scope and precision of various operations of geomantic sorcery. I share these thoughts, accounts, and experiences at a somewhat nascent stage of working the tools: I am excited to share them and their techniques to encourage and compare experiments and extrapolations.
Working these planetary talismans of the Seven Rulers has certainly furthered my interest in exploring use of circling ways beyond the classic 9-ft magic circles of protection and conjuration. It has also given me valuable perspectives on broader historical instances of circling in the European grimoire traditions of magic. Evidence from one of the earliest manuscripts of the Grimorium Verum grimoire-family, the Clavicula Salomonis De Secretis, details several sorcerous operations involving encircling tools of magical operation: ‘Ut Pluat' (To Make It Rain) one must place a glass of sea water and a heliotrope stone in a circle inscribed; ‘Ut Fulguret’ (To Make Lightning) a lamp is placed at the centre of a specially scribed circle; and an operation to ‘Concubitu Potiendum’ (‘For Love Making/Coupling’) features a diagram of the circle, to be inscribed in a red ochre chalk, on top of an altar.
Another operation of the Grimorium Verum with strong circling implications, To Open Anything that is Shut or Locked, demonstrates some pertinent squaring dimensions as well as avenues for potential spiritwork. The experiment instructs the operator to make a circle around a lodestone then ‘within the circle make a square and at all the angles put the sigil of Sergutha’. If we take this to be Surgat, recent developments in joined-up thinking about grimoire devils inform us that this spirit is also identified with Annobath… who just happens to ‘teacheth the knowledge of necromancy, geomancy, and chiromancy’, amongst other things. We come full squared circle.
The use of a bloodstone to mark the earth in the Grand Grimoire offers inspiration for experimenting with lapidary lore for our geomantic tools, both in terms of beading or these more direct gemstone styli. Nor should we be hidebound to strict repetition: bloodstone is a powerful ally, but it is not our only poison. When constructing the geomantic circlet for work with Hismael and Jupiterian currents, virtues and spirits (and, thus, for Thursdays especially), for instance, I divined that the inclusion of four amethyst beads for the circlet’s “corners” would inform and galvanise my work with the grand Spirit of the Greater Benefic.
I have already signaled from social media accounts the availability of these planetary talismans for purchase. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you are interested in working with these tools; I am happy to work with clients to tailor bespoke consecratory treatments. They are currently priced at $44 apiece, or $231 for the full set of seven. I am currently experimenting with various forms of additional consecration - involving homebrew planetary oils, asperging waters and fumigation blends - so that price may climb as I develop these talismans further and the process of construction and empowerment becomes more complex and potent.

All-Star Superman (2005)
Another invocation technique that the magician can employ is called the assumption of godforms—where with “concentrated imagination of oneself in the symbolic shape of any God, one should be able to identify oneself with the idea which [the god] represents.” Comics writer and practicing magician Grant Morrison describes the process in his essay Pop Magic. The Gods of myth are primal forms, expressions of big ideas that have been here long before us and will remain long after.Morrison writes that, for example:
“ANGER is one of those Big Ideas and LOVE  is another one. Then there’s FEAR and GUILT “So…to summon a god, one has only to concentrate on that god to the exclusion of all other thought. Let’s just say you wish to summon the Big Idea COMMUNICATION in the form of the god Hermes, so that he will grant you a silver-tongue. Hermes is the Greek personification of quick wit, art, and spelling and the qualities he represents were embodied by Classical artists in the symbol of an eternally swift and naked youth, fledged with tiny wings and dressed only in streamers of air. Hermes is a condensation into pictorial form – a sigil, in fact – of an easily recognizable default state of human consciousness. When our words and minds are nimble, when we conjure laughter from others, when we make poetry, we are in the real presence of Hermes. We are, in fact, possessed by the god.”
Morrison is keen to point out that there need not be a ghostly or real reason for this. As Crowley wrote:
“In this book it is spoken of the Sephiroth and the Paths; of Spirits and Conjurations; of Gods, Spheres, Planes, and many other things which may or may not exist. It is immaterial whether these exist or not. By doing certain things certain results will follow; students are most earnestly warned against attributing objective reality or philosophic validity to any of them.”
Still, two questions arise. if these Gods are not ‘real’, why invoke them at all? Morrison answers that for us nicely:
“People tend to become possessed by gods arbitrarily because they do not recognize them as such; a man can be overwhelmed with anger (the Greek god Ares), we can all be “beside ourselves” with passion (Aphrodite) or grief (Hades). in life we encounter these Big Ideas everyday but we no longer use the word “god” to describe them. The magician consciously evokes these states and renames them gods in order to separate them from his or her Self, in order to study them and learn.”
So for example, “You may wish to connect with Hermes if you’re beginning a novel or giving a speech or simply want to entertain a new beau with your incredible repartee”. Practical magic then. Choose a god based on their qualities; what Platonic ideal or archetypal human experience they represent, and invoke them in order to know and learn from them
[...]
Morrison too advocates drawing upon fictional entities in magical practice:
“So once I got into the chaos magic thing, I started to think well if all I’m doing is triggering a state of mind can I do the same thing with something I know to be unreal? And I would start instead of summoning up Greek gods or Voodoo Loa, I would summon up Metron from the New Gods or HP Lovecraft monsters, or the Cenobites from Clive Barker and get the same thing. It was all about, okay, so even fictional things appear as long as they correspond to the specific feeling that you’re trying to create using this ritual method.”
Could Superman work this way? Certainly the religious and mythopoetic elements of the Superman story our often argued. Noting the Jewish heritage of Superman’s creators some commentators have read Superman as a Moses figure. Superman’s home of Krypton was about to be destroyed by events beyond his parents control. In Biblical Egypt the Israelites faced the mass murder of their male children. Both the infant Moses and the infant Superman were saved from death by their parents, one placed in a reed basket and sent down the Nile, the other in a rocket sent into space and bound for Earth. Both children grew up in foreign cultures, discovered and raised by adoptive parents who realise their true potential. Superman disguises his Kryptonian heritage with the human persona of Clark Kent, just as Moses was forced to keep his Jewish ancestry a secret.
Another variation says that Superman is a Christ figure. Like Jesus, Superman is sent by his father from the ‘heavens’ to save mankind (albeit one at a time). Both are raised by adoptive parents of humble means-Superman by farmers, Jesus by a carpenter. And both possess extraordinary powers that they use for the benefit of mankind. Furthermore, Superman’s real identity as Kal-El, son of Jor-El, has theological significance, “El” being a semitic word for ‘deity’ or god.
[...]
Perhaps then, like Jesus before him, Superman  is the latest incarnation of dying and reborn god, or of the Solar deity variously known as Horus, Sol or Apollo. In his book Supergods Grant Morrison neatly summarises what archetypal function Superman, as the latest manifestation of a perennial form, then serves. superman, he writes, embodies our species ‘loftiest aspirations’. As such Superman “was brave. He was clever. he never gave up and he never let anyone down. He stood up for the weak and knew how to see off bullies of all kinds. he couldn’t be hurt of killed b the bad guys, hard as they might try. He didn’t get sick. he was fiercely loyal to his friends and to his adopted world. He was Apollo, the sun god, the unbeatable supreme self, the personal greatness of which we all know we’re capable.” (Supergods, p.15)
It seems obvious why one would want to invoke Superman and absorb those qualities. What’s peculiar to Superman however is his tendency to leave the pages of his dimensional universe and manifest himself in our 4-dimensional realm.
Take Alvin Schwartz’s story in An Unlikely Prophet for instance. Schwartz was a writer of both Batman and Superman for seventeen years in the forties and fifties. Later he was contacted by a Buddhist monk named Thogden. Thogden claimed to be a Tulpa, a ‘thought-form’, a being thought into existence by a Tibetan mystic. Thogden proceeds to take Schwartz on a spiritual journey that takes in many of the familiar stopping points on the twentieth century magical path-shamanism, quantum physics, and of course, superheroes. Schwartz’s journey apparently continues in A Gathering of Selves, which focuses on Batman (who as Morrison points out is the Lunar counterpart to the Solar Batman). As it happens, I haven’t yet read the second book so if anyone knows more about it I’d love to hear.
Most important right now though is Thogden’s claims that Superman, too, is a Tulpa.  That Schwartz’s (or perhaps all the readers and creators) thought and focus on Superman have given him some kind of materiality; some ability to manifest in and interact in our world. Certainly, Schwartz has an experience that may or may not be evidence of Superman’s intervention. Grant Morrison has also had a magical contact with the Superman thought form. As he said in an interview with Newsarama:
“My specific take on Superman’s physicality was inspired by the ‘shamanic’ meeting my JLA editor Dan Raspler and I had in the wee hours of the morning outside the San Diego comic book convention in whenever it was, ‘98 or ‘99.
“I’ve told this story in more detail elsewhere but basically, we were trying to figure out how to ‘reboot’ Superman without splitting up his marriage to Lois, which seemed like a cop–out. It was the beginning of the conversations which ultimately led to Superman Now, with Dan and I restlessly pacing around trying to figure out a new way into the character of Superman and coming up short…
“Until we looked up to see a guy dressed as Superman crossing the train tracks. Not just any skinny convention guy in an ill–fitting suit, this guy actually looked like Superman. It was too good a moment to let pass, so I ran over to him, told him what we’d been trying to do and asked if he wouldn’t mind indulging us by answering some questions about Superman, which he did…in the persona and voice of Superman!
“We talked for an hour and a half and he walked off into the night with his friend (no, it wasn’t Jimmy Olsen, sadly). I sat up the rest of the night, scribbling page after page of Superman notes as the sun came up over the naval yards.
“My entire approach to Superman had come from the way that guy had been sitting; so easy, so confident, as if, invulnerable to all physical harm, he could relax completely and be spontaneous and warm. That pose, sitting hunched on the bollard, with one knee up, the cape just hanging there, talking to us seemed to me to be the opposite of the clenched, muscle-bound look the character sometimes sports and that was the key to Superman for me.
“I met the same Superman a couple of times afterwards but he wasn’t Superman, just a nice guy dressed as Superman.”

Chess World Celebrates A ‘Sensational’ Move … That Leads To A Championship Draw
Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, the world’s top two grandmasters, spent Thanksgiving in London in a soundproof glass box, staring at a small table, guzzling bottled water and continuing their deadlocked battle for the World Chess Championship.
The match was already a record-breaker, having started with more consecutive draws than any championship on the books. As the holiday began, the best-of-12 race for the title sat level 4.5-4.5. Tensions ran high. #LooksDrawish was trending on Twitter (I assume/dream).
I awoke in my Brooklyn apartment early Thursday morning, put on some heavy-duty coffee and watched as the grandmasters opened Game 10 with another Sveshnikov Sicilian, just as they’d done in Game 8. Caruana steered out of Game 8’s lane on his 12th move, with a novel “pawn to b4,” and they were left with the position below.

“It’s going to be a complicated game,” said the grandmaster Judit Polgár, providing the official match commentary.
And indeed it was going to be — for the players and your humble chess correspondent. My parents were in town, my sister was sweating over an oven, and forgotten provisions had to be procured. A table had to be set. Mashed potatoes had to be eaten. I tore away from the match and headed into the city.
Having nervously missed a handful of moves on my train ride, I ascended from the serviceless subway station in time to witness something special from Carlsen, the defending world champion who had yet to do much special at all. One grandmaster told me his move was “phenomenal.” Another tweeted that it was “incredible.” A chess writer called it “sensational.” A chess instructor called it “fascinating.”
So just what was it that Carlsen did with the black pieces here?

It was pawn to b5.
Erwin l’Ami, the grandmaster who called it “incredible,” described the idea behind the move, which ostensibly loses a pawn for Carlsen, as follows: Once Carlsen pushes that pawn to b5, Caruana can win it by moving his pawn to b6. (That may not appear to be a legal move, but it’s a special capture known as en passant, in which a pawn can diagonally capture another pawn that has just hopped up two squares next to it.) Carlsen could then take the rook on a3 with his rook, and Caruana could take that rook with his knight. Carlsen could then push his pawn to f3, encroaching further into white’s territory. Two pawn captures then ensue on that same square, followed by Caruana capturing there with his bishop. And then Carlsen could bring his knight into the action on e5. The result of that hypothetical line would have looked like this — a “huge attack” on Caruana’s king.

After snacking nervously with this chess idea in our heads, my parents and I emerged from a serviceless restaurant worried (or at least I was) that we may have missed the final Norwegian triumph and the de facto end of the world championship. Someone may have won! We found instead that we hadn’t missed many moves and that Caruana hadn’t bit on Carlsen’s aggressive pawn sacrifice. No devastating attack had come. The position (my phone told me) was once again level. It looked drawish.
Wine store: drawish. Whole Foods: drawish. Elevator: drawish.
When we arrived at last at my sister’s apartment, her boyfriend already had both the chess game and the football game on large screens, thereby forever cementing his value to the family. He’s not much of a chess player, but he did have some interesting thoughts on rook endgames. Lucky thing, too, because by that point the game looked like this.

With my attention divided between how-to-carve-a-turkey videos on YouTube, a glass of Cabernet, and the soundproof glass box in London, I was nevertheless unsurprised to see Carlsen and Caruana shake hands for the 10th game in a row, agreeing to a draw on the 54th move. The match — needless to say — sits level at 5-5 with two games to go.
Brin-Jonathan Butler, a Canadian journalist who was therefore presumably unencumbered by Thanksgiving, had been keeping a close eye on the match and called me to say that it has been “as eventful as a bus keeping its schedule.” And indeed, that schedule continues: Game 11 begins Saturday at 3 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time — that’s 10 a.m. Eastern. I’ll be covering it here and on Twitter.
