Ron O'Neal and Sheila Frazier in Super Fly (Gordon Parks Jr., 1972)
Cast: Ron O'Neal, Carl Lee, Sheila Frazier, Julius Harris, Charles McGregor, Sig Shore, Polly Niles, Yvonne Delaine. Screenplay: Phillip Fenty. Cinematography: James Signorelli. Costume design: Nate Adams. Film editing: Bob Brady. Music: Curtis Mayfield.
I know why the Criterion Channel grouped Super Fly into its "'70s Car Movies" collection, because there's nothing more evocative of the milieu than the shots of Priest's tricked-out Cadillac Eldorado nosing its sharklike way through the streets of 1970s Manhattan. But it's a movie that transcends categorization, especially the "blaxploitation" one with which it has become synonymous. It's a portrait of an American subculture at a pivotal moment in history, when Black lives were moving out of physical and cultural ghettoization and into their still problematic place in the American mainstream. Gordon Parks Jr.'s film is rough-hewn and raw, sometimes awkwardly scripted and acted, but also darkly vital. It's a near-tragic story about a man's hope to be freed from the affluence of criminality, only to be thwarted by both the whites who don't want him to be free and those of his own kind who choose to remain exploited. Curtis Mayfield's songs tell the story of Youngblood Priest (Ron O'Neal) in their own way, operatically heightening the screenplay's narrative and the camera's images. And it has to be reiterated that Super Fly has a lot in common with a film from the same year, Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. Youngblood Priest and Michael Corleone share the same hopes and face the same cruel forces.

Youngblood Priest is a young cocaine kingpin from Atlanta, Georgia, working the streets since he was brought in by his mentor Scatter at age eleven. He lives with his two girlfriends, Georgia and Cynthia.
Juju, a member of rival gang Snow Patrol, hits on Cynthia and, shooting at Priest, accidentally hits a bystander. The Snow Patrol members leave while Priest gives the victim money and directs them to the trauma center.
Priest confides in his second-in-command Eddie that he wants out of drug-dealing, and has a plan. Eddie has his back but Scatter refuses to help. Juju suspects Priest of a hit on Snow Patrol and plans to retaliate. Snow Patrol deduces that Priest's colleague, Fat Freddie, was one of the assailants. Deciding to set Priest up, Snow Patrol contacts two corrupt police officers to start their long plan to destroy Priest.
Fat Freddie is pulled over by corrupt cops Franklin and Mason. They discover cocaine and find Eddie in Freddie's contacts. With Mason's gun at Freddie's head, Freddie's girlfriend reveals his criminal history and Priest's identity. Franklin shoots and kills Freddie and Rochelle.
Mason threatens to expose Priest's dealing if he does not work with her. Fighting over recriminations about Freddie's death, Priest starts strangling Eddie and leaves him unconscious. Franklin and Mason shows up at Fat Freedie’s funeral demanding their upfront payment of $1 million. Then Scatter surprises Priest at Freddie's funeral, ordering him to meet with his supplier Adalberto, after finding out Priest cut a secret deal for more product. Adalberto kills Scatter, having realized he was stealing from him. Adalberto threatens Priest, telling him that he can never get out of the game.
Snow Patrol members led by Juju shoot up Priest's mansion. During the shootout, Cynthia shoots back but is killed, and Priest and Georgia set fire to the mansion where Juju runs through the fire out the mansion to get in a car chase with Priest, Georgia and now Q. Chasing Priest, Juju is injured and Q is killed in a car crash. Eddie feigns allegiance with Snow Patrol, and tricks them into an ambush where they are killed by Mason and other cops alerted by Priest.
Priest thanks Eddie for his help and prepares to leave the country with Georgia. He blackmails the mayor with a sex tape and promises the mayor will win the upcoming election. Adalberto is disowned by his mother, and executed at her order after she receives proof that he framed his brother for a crime. Instead of paying off Mason, Priest tips off police and she is arrested for cocaine possession.
Priest meets Franklin and beats him to avenge Freddie's murder. Having settled his business obligations, and with his enemies either dead or in custody, Priest and Georgia relax on a cruise in Montenegro

The most fucked up miracle shit happening in south america does explain why things are happening in north buenos aires. Something about the trinkets the italians carried to the continent was definitely cursed (or blessed?)
Cryptophasic communication silver medal for the siblings horray!
We can have a little exorcism, as a treat.
Tiny italian man with stigmata perfect protagonist for a stealth game, 1 hit point tho
Starting to understand why people say this is one of the fics of all time lmao
Okay but now that it's been postulated as an idea, more of everything should include Ray levitating aided by his hair, actually.
Reading this on a post-youngblood chronicles era makes you come up with reasonable solutions to plot problems much faster. Chop chop.
RAY IS A HAIRDRESSER!!!
"All you'll find is ten million Geocities pages with sparkly purple font at the top. Trust me." -bexless researching for all this
I'm gonna need the unholyverse characters' opinions on nov 5th and the corresponding finale of a certain tv show, i have a feeling those opinions would be very strong, and the arguement hilarious. Priest Gerard's 4 hour rant about piss poor theology and the implications of mlm presenting angels getting sent to turbomegahell upon confessing.
They've got the good kush! Hotboxing the room with it to cleanse evil spirits. I agree.
Ooh i like that it didnt end there and there are Consequences(tm)
Ruh roh, it IS the scooby gang
No my dude, it is my understanding you're about to find out demonic possession is what follows Saturday, not sunday

1972 Movies #61 - Super Fly (12/28/22) Ron O'Neal is charismatic as Youngblood Priest. The story plays out like a traditional Crime or Western "One last caper" film. Excellent Curtis Mayfield soundtrack elevates this to classic status. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmu7Mk0Mu2PF-516q0TBffytVUeaArGaj-XB680/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ron O'Neal (September 1, 1937 – January 14, 2004) was an actor, director, and screenwriter, who rose to fame in his role as Youngblood Priest, a New York cocaine dealer, in the film Super Fly (1972) and its sequel Super Fly T.N.T.(1973). He was a director and writer for the sequel, and the film Up Against the Wall. He graduated from Glenville High School and attended Ohio State University, where he became interested in acting after seeing the play Finian's Rainbow. He joined the Karamu House company in Cleveland, working with the oldest African-American theatre company in the US from 1957 until 1964, during which period he appeared in plays such as Kiss Me, Kate, A Streetcar Named Desire, and A Raisin in the Sun while working as a housepainter to earn his living. In 1964, he went to New York, teaching acting classes at the Harlem Youth Arts Program and appearing in Off-Broadway plays. During those years, film roles that went beyond stock characters were few and far between, notable exceptions being his roles in Brothers (1977), Brave New World (1980), and The Sophisticated Gents (1981). He had several television guest appearances, frequently playing detective roles. In 1988, He had a recurring role as Mercer Gilbert on A Different World, playing the wealthy father of the spoiled southern belle Whitley Gilbert. He appeared in Original Gangstas. He was first married to actress Carol Tillery Banks, from November 1973 until 1980 (divorced), and then to Audrey Pool, from 1993 until his death. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch9mPcXun0MoO0cXXIGgaKgh7Tmsurn7DnaBIM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

oh my god nick jonas?! thats some hilarious energy i always forgot he did solo stuff bc i grew up with the jo bros lol. omg same with 5sos i started listening to them after hearing easier on the radio in June 2019 and then i bumped youngblood until Calm came out. i just listened to all of SGFG (which came out on my bday apaprently) and its so POP PUNK and they were such babies it speaks to me and i love it
yeah nick jonas is. hm.  I’m not a fan of his solo stuff so I was okay with being busy that night and idk if he was just in a bad mood that night or what but my friends who were there said that it was not the best energy
I started listening to 5sos because I ran out of one direction interviews to watch and I didn’t want to write an essay so I watched the 5sos gq tattoo interview because when I was home over spring break that year my brother mentioned that he watched it in his tattoo seminar that was taught by a priest at a tiny catholic college so I felt like I needed to see it.  then I was like “wait what does their music even sound like now” since I had friends who were fans around the sgfg era but I hadn’t really heard anything from them since so I listened to Youngblood (the album) and instantly got obsessed
how iconic that you share a bday with SGFG and I agree it’s a very baby pop punk album which is a Whole Mood
