Stable Diffusion for Idiots (me)

I'm no good at drawing. Trying this thing for over a decade but I've never had enough patience to perfect the skill. So. I can draw sloppy portraits and still somehow I want to create a comic book.

I have an idea, a plot, characters, all pack, except the crucial part where I can draw. It would be a very tragic story but I thought wow, wait a minute. Thank Merlin, we have AI now! That can do things for us.

So when I dropped the idea of actually drawing myself I started to explore Stable Diffusion. It turned out that that shitty stubborn thing understands concept art even worse than me. But I really hope it's just a start and we will find the right level of connection and understanding.

Currently, I barely understand how to launch SD, what models are and how to install them, and how to write simple prompts. You have no idea how long I read all the code and tried to grasp it. So when I got my first worst image in the world I was freakingly happy.

Here it is. Just look how perfectly dreadful these men are but they are holding hands 🥰

Today I learned useful settings, how to get more accurate images, how to fix faces merlin this part was killing me. But look! This young man already looks like a human being after just one try!

And so I continued to prompt something more interesting just for the sake of experimenting with the model. That's how it sees da Vinci portraits of a blond-haired man.

This was a pretty one. We also have something that looks like Igor Nikolaev by da Vinci and it wasn't intentional I swear 😂 (on the right is actual Igor Nikolaev's photo)

The last funny beat for today, I was trying to do something with Daniel Bruhl without any understanding of what I was doing (I had 3 minutes till the end of my VM session so I had to work quickly. Do not repeat this at home, kids 😆)

Modern sugar baby Laszlo - @rumblelibrary and I had discussed this concept before between ourselves and when I set up this account V had to come and send it as a prompt and when I think of this account it's what first springs to mind. I loved the concept of Laszlo getting a sugar mummy and the gif I used as well of a young-looking Laszlo makes me weak, he's so cute! It's my favourite because of the concept alone.

The winner's prize - Frankly I am surprised there was not more Niki x James pieces that came up during the Bruhl nation. It is the prime enemy to lovers' material. Nevertheless, I loved writing the dynamic between the reader, Niki and James and I loved writing the situation. Plus the prompt came from the lovely @i-am-dead-inside-666 who've I've had lots of discussions about James x Niki, and who always supports my work and the sub work and sends lots of prompts. Thank you :)

Putting Niki in his place and making him shut up - I won't lie, sub-Niki is one of my favourite subs simply because I love the idea of how bratty sub-Niki would be and how fun it would be to put him in his place and with this piece I got to explore that as much as I wanted!

What happens under the sheets - A really short piece but it was written about Ernst who I love but haven't really written a lot for, so I enjoyed being able to write about his character when I got the chance! And of course, pegging is one of my fav concepts. I love the idea that Ernst seems like a really dominant character but actually what happens under the sheets is a lot different ;)

Reader and Zemo engaging in puppy play - I believe this was one of the first pieces I wrote on here. Definitely one of the first requests I got on here outside my friendship group on here. Either way, this was the first time I had tried to write puppy play and it was definitely not what I was used to but Daniel has such a cute puppy face (he's said so himself) so it fitted well and I loved being able to write Zemo like this. So all these factors combined are why it gets into the top 5 for me.

✍️ What’s your ideal writing setup?

A big clean desk, hot coffee, sunshine, and easy access to either a treadmill or a running track for when I need to think.

🎬 If a movie or show were based on your fic, which fic would you choose and who would you fancast?

Ohohoho.

Fealty Eadwulf is an amalgamation of vibes and influences, stemming from pieces of: Classic Indianna Jones, Mazrim Taim (from the wheel of time series), Pedro Pascal's recent turn as 'cynical loner who becomes fond of magical child in his care', any bodyguard dynamic ever, and the 70s/80s action stars with chest hair and the big mustaches. A solid nose, intensive features and more weathered than youthful.

We'd need a big guy, late 30s/early 40s who's got not quite clean-cut; more 'could bite if provoked'. They have to have more stage presence and be a more physical actor who can carry a scene with little to no words.

He's young, but I liked the look of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character in Bullet Train, so maybe him if he could bulk up. Pedro Pascal is like, exactly the right kind of exhausted and slightly feral energy and tbh some of my sketches of Fealdwuld look like him, but he's just aged out of the range.

To throw a few names out there as I scroll through a list of actors in their 40s: Jason Mamoa, Tom Hardy, Charlie Hunnam, Luke Evans, Patrcik Wilson, Mahershala Ali (he's technically too old but i love him), Joe Manganiello, Daniel Bruhl, Troy Baker, Zach McGowan, Miguel Ángel Silvestre

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) Review

Plot: When 17-year-old Paul joins the Western Front in World War I, his initial excitement is soon shattered by the grim reality of life in the trenches.

My experience with the original novel this movie is based on is that my father made me read it when I was very very young, and as such I didn’t appreciate it at the time nor did I really understand it much. ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Three Comrades’ are the ones I had to read of writer Erich Maria Remarque, and believe me when I tell you it’s as if I never read them, as I am hard pressed to recall a single event that happens. To be fair I do remember one part of ‘All Quiet’ when one of the soldiers had lost his legs after going into No Man’s Land and is lying and losing blood at the medic wing surrounded by his soldier mates, and he gives boots to one of them as he realises he won’t need them anymore, after which he proceeds to die. As you can imagine, my child self was pretty traumatised and when I told my father this at the time, he was so proud that I appreciated the book. Appreciation is not the right word. Scarred for life more like! Anyway, so now having grown up I was much more inclined to revisit this story through the lens of the new Netflix adaptation that has just been released, and I was fully ready to experience the boots scene yet again, but now as a strong macho man who doesn’t fall captive to heard-string strumming emotions of terror. Turns out, this new All Quiet on the Western Front does not feature that moment, which means its either a very loose adaptation of the book or I have simply mixed that event up with a different novel I read as a kid. Look, no shame to my dad, he meant well by wanting me to learn from the get-go all the harsh realities of life and whatnot, but c’mon, there’s only so much an 8 year old chap such as myself would have quantified after reading ‘War and Peace’. Yep, I read ‘War and Peace’ when I was 8. That must be a Guinness World Record of some kind.

Anyway, evidently All Quiet on the Western Front is not the most faithful adaptation of Remarque’s classic, however that doesn’t stop it from successfully bringing out the anti-war themes of the original novel. Look, this isn’t a casual Saturday night watch. This movie is a raw and brutal depiction of life on the trenches, and though this isn’t the first film to show us that war is hell, director Edward Berger manages to make the message as poignant as ever, and very relatable to our modern times. Whilst in the trenches many innocent lads are thrown in the deep end, scared and terrified and fighting for their lives over a war they don’t really understand the reasons of, the higher ranking officers all sit in their cosy mansions and headquarters enjoying their nice fresh food and drink and acting like they are the real heroes. A portion of the film involves a German negotiator played by Daniel Bruhl having talks with members of the Allies in finding an agreement to end the war and find peace, and whilst they take their sweet time signing on the dotted lines and actually stopping the bloodshed, thousands of innocent lives continue to be lost. It’s very relevant to our current day and age, with as little as in the UK with the current parliament destroying the country’s economy and evidently not caring about the working to lower classes who are suffering for it, or probably more and primarily so what’s happening with Ukraine and Russia, where powerful leaders are making horrifying decisions from up top but its the innocent living population and the lads who have been forced to join the army and fight that are suffering and losing their lives. And for what? Just so that someone can get a little bit more land? It’s pathetic, and All Quiet on the Western Front delivers that message full throttle.

This movie is a bleak experience from beginning to end. From the opening moments where the blood-soaked uniforms of the dead are washed and then handed nice and clean to the new recruits, with the latter having no idea where these clothes have been scavenged from, to the main character Paul stabbing a French soldier, only to then have to lie in horror by his side and listen to the victim choking on his own blood, and Paul having to deal with the reality of his own actions. All these moments are grim reminders that it shouldn’t have come to this. The cinematography captures the harshness of the fighting, but also counteracts it by emphasising moments of beauty through landscape shots of the snow to the moments of camaraderie between the soldiers.

In terms of negatives I’d say that the movie doesn’t really take time with allowing you to get to know all these characters properly minus a couple, and as such from a narrative standpoint you as an audience member aren’t able to connect much with them, and so even though when their inevitable deaths come and it’s hard-hitting, I wish we knew them more beforehand to actually make the moment even stronger. The two you really do spend time with though is the main character Paul, played superbly by Felix Kammerer who identifies the notes of terror and fear this character is experiencing, and the constant loss and despair. Also his main pal Katcinzky - Albrecht Schuch plays him and this chap really does it. He plays Kat in a strangely upbeat roguish manner, as such quite unexpected in light of the setting they are in, but it’s his constant push to find positivity in things that allows them to somehow mentally make it through this horrible experience. As it’s again a powerful and shocking idea that all these people have their lives and their relationships and such, and all of that if thrown away by needless death and bloodshed. Look, this movie is bloody dark, like I mean phew! Can’t say it’s one I’ll watch again, but I very much respect its realistic dirty depiction of war. It is a very difficult viewing experience, but one I think adults should be willing to watch and experience as again, it’s ever so relevant and also really really powerful. Terrifying and brutal, but so so powerful. Worth every wince-inducing nightmare moment.

I’m going to say a brave thing here; if they adapted Silence Of The Lambs again I think Daniel Bruhl should play Lecter. He’s a little young for it but he’s intense, small, sleek, multilingual and good at being ominous 👀

All this Biggles fic has caused me to do research! The average height of a British man born in 1900 was 5 foot 6 1/2 inches which is perfect for my casting of James McAvoy (5 ft 7) as Biggles and Daniel Brühl (5 ft 9) as Erich. Thank you for many pleasant daydreams!

Okay, this is delightful; thank you and also you're welcome. :D

... I actually didn't realize Bruhl was that tall; I thought he was shorter than that, but maybe it's just because he's often cast opposite people who are freakishly tall!

In the books I think Biggles is meant to be somewhat short and slight for a guy - he's variously described as slim and delicate-looking with small hands - but that works pretty well for McAvoy tbh, especially a young McAvoy.

(I am terrible at fantasy casting; I can never come up with anyone.)

Anyway, this makes me happy and I'm glad to have provided happy thoughts!

// About me

My name is Alyssia, and my pronouns are she/her.

I wrote a lot before on my old blog @valwentinefics, but I wanted a fresh start so I created this one! The username is a mash up of the German liebe meaning love, and the word literacy.

I'm currently a university student majoring in English Language and Literature, and also considering a minor in German which I've been learning for a year so far! I have a study/general life blog for that stuff @langlit

I'm Canadian born and raised, my father is Ojibwe and my mom is Dutch. I have a super bitchy cat named Peach who I love very very much that lives with my mom since I couldn't bring her with me when I moved out.

My main interests are Twilight (my mom was super young so she would put it on for me as a bedtime movie when I was a child and I've loved it ever since!), Daniel Bruhl, Jschlatt, Skyrim, Ace Attorney, Pride and Prejudice, Writing, Yoga, and Pilates! I have ADHD and my hyperfixations tend to flip flop around those things.

I'm always interested in making friends so please don't hesitate to reach out. I may be a late responder some times but I'd love to talk!
