Hope you're prepared to cry.

Phil levered himself up using his sword. He ignored the way his hands trembled, his whole body shook as he held himslef together like a boat in a monsoon. Not yet.

His sword is enchanted well, he's always had a knack for it, sharp enough to cut through the veil. It cuts through everything in his path like butter. He does not think about what has just cut through him. Not yet.

It isn't until he lays down to rest, that his grief hits him. It wrecks him like a boat dashed upon the rocks, cuts through him as surely as his own sword. He cries himself hoarse as he breaks.

What has he done?

He spends the next few days in bed. He doesn't really remember them beyond the gray numbness that had enveloped everything.

Eventually, he gets up. Starts walking, doing small tasks, relearning how to live. Learning how to manage the boulder of guilt on his chest and the echo of the hole in his soul.

Death once told him she loved him, because he survived everything. Persistent and unfalteringly always moving forward. She said it made him strong, and she admired that strength.

He knows she was right.

He wishes he were weaker.
