I don’t want this to take away from the current discussion on my blog and will be reblogging my other two posts again after this is posted but I just needed to expose this clown before I left for my hiatus (post on that will be up soon!)

I literally love the whole cast, the only one I dislike and have since lost respect for is Nicola and I’ve never been quiet about why - she has committed and fuelled microaggressions against her co-stars of colour and as a person of colour myself, I CANNOT in good conscious still support and admire someone like that. I am allowed to dislike celebrities who have a big platform if I don’t agree with their beliefs and the way they treat people right? Cool story and I said what I said bro. You seemed to have already have made up your mind about me, so just block me and move on. Why go find my AO3 to leave a message there when you can just drop a good ole hate anon on Tumblr. Like you really took time out of your day, found a way to leave anon messages (I don’t use AO3 a lot so if this is common knowledge oop) and then left that on my fic in an attempt to hurt me.

Not me. Ok, I’ve rewritten this post several times because I really want this to be a productive and respectful discussion, but this is a conversation that does need to be started. I’ve been thinking about the whole cultural appropriation story line in this season of The Unsleeping City so far, and of course I think it’s great that Cody is starting to realize why that’s wrong and that Murph is making it explicitly clear that it is wrong, but I want to reorient the conversation away from Cody now and talk about Ricky as a Japanese-American character.
Because when Zac went “Just to paint a picture for you...” during the museum fight episode, there was quite a bit of surprise from non-Asian people in the fandom that this was really a serious issue, and one that Ricky would be bothered by or speak up about. But why wouldn’t he? I mean, the character is Japanese-American, and so is the player. Doesn’t it make perfect sense that he would at least be a little bothered by a white person appropriating Japanese culture? Asian fans certainly noticed and pointed it out before that episode aired. Ricky/Zac certainly noticed - go back through the episodes and observe how every time Cody pulled out a kunai or threw a shuriken, Ricky was cringing or facepalming with an uncomfortable laugh. Even with seven different camera perspectives to watch at the same time, it should have been pretty clear in the fandom that this was an ongoing issue that would bother and was bothering Ricky.
And I think there are several different facets to this, but the one I want to address is how there’s a tendency in fandom to ignore or erase Ricky’s Japanese heritage. Not literally (although there is a particular sting every time I see another Ricky fancast where the actor is of another Asian heritage than Japanese - Asian people are not interchangeable). But especially prior to Season 2, there was a general trend in the fandom that liked to simplify Ricky’s character and overlook him as a complex player character because of traits that are very common in East Asian immigrant cultures.
Perhaps it’s because my heritage is East Asian and I’ve had more exposure to general cultural customs and behaviours among East Asian immigrants, but Zac’s portrayal of Ricky has always read as a very obvious Asian-American child of immigrants to me (and, y’know, Zac and Ricky are actually Asian-American children of immigrants). Not expressing negative emotions out loud, not verbally articulating thoughts and feelings but expressing them through actions, deferring to other peoples’ needs first instead of expressing his own wants because it’s not about him. With the caveat that I’m Chinese and not Japanese, these are common practices that I’ve observed in my own family, among friends and acquaintances (of various Asian heritages including but not limited to Chinese), in broader experiences with other East Asian immigrants.
(Asia is not a monolith and I’m not familiar with the immigrant cultures and experiences of people from other Asian heritages. I specify East Asian here because that is broadly what I can speak on and because Ricky is Japanese, but other Asian people please feel free to discuss your experiences as well)
And obviously, these are not monolith traits observed at all times, I’ve definitely met plenty of East Asian immigrants who did express their emotions loudly, who used their words, who were assertive about their own needs and wants (this is not the post to be getting into different generations of immigration and the culture differences between those generations). And it also depends on the context - from my own experience, in private within families, both emotions and words can get extremely loud (if you dare to risk the wrath of your elders by arguing with them!) But my point is that the habits I pointed out above are still relatively common in East Asian immigrant cultures, even if not all individuals follow them at all times.
Particularly prior to Season 2, there was a common perspective in the fandom, usually couched in “uwu, I love that Zac is playing a hot dummy!!” that would go along the lines of “Ricky doesn’t have a character arc, he doesn’t get into conflicts with other people, he doesn’t say anything and is just happy to be there, he’s a shallow character who’s just a himbo.” All of which I’d dispute, (*insert post here about Ricky as a character reclaiming Asian masculinity*), but I want to focus on how the main traits -refraining from overt emotions, remaining reserved in speech, not bringing up his own needs and wants- that were brought up and used to simplify and dismiss Ricky’s character were traits which are commonly found in East Asian immigrant communities. The whole “remaining reserved/trying to avoid conflict” is something a lot of East Asian-American kids pick up at home because what you say or don’t say isn’t as important as what you do or don’t do.
And I mean, so much of Ricky is about doing things for people, showing his feelings through his actions, not his words. Just because he wasn’t getting into PC conflict in Season 1, or expressing his emotions in the same ways as other PCs, doesn’t mean he was just a silent, cheerful himbo. Which there’s nothing wrong with being a himbo, and it can be particularly empowering in Ricky’s case as an Asian man (see above linked post about Asian masculinity), but that’s not all there is to Ricky’s character! And don’t get me wrong, I personally love that part of his ongoing character arc in Season 2 is speaking up about his feelings and expressing to other people what he wants (because there’s the “American” part of the Asian-American experience that’s not just about having Asian heritage but is also about negotiating that relationship in a place with different norms and customs). But it doesn’t negate the “Asian” part of “Asian-American” either, which does impact and shape the way Ricky interacts with people and the world.
In hindsight, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that interest and meta in Ricky skyrocketed once he did start being more vocal and assertive in Season 2, which are common traits in many Western cultures. And it’s not the only reason that there’s a deeper interest in Ricky now (shout out to all the Asian fans and allies who’ve been really diving into Ricky’s character this season!) and I choose to believe in good faith that it isn’t intentional or malicious (audiences do tend to gravitate more towards tangible moments of conversation and conflict rather than background acting). But I think we as fans need to start questioning why as a whole, we really didn’t start giving deeper thought to Ricky until he began displaying more typically Western traits, because I think it’s emblematic of how, very subtly and unconsciously, we are used to privileging white “American” behaviour and ignoring or glossing over Asian (immigrant) traits.
In many ways, Ricky prior to Season 2 (and very arguably up until the museum fight), has been perceived in the general fandom as a sort of post-racial American-melting-pot character. Fans don’t wholly ignore that he’s Japanese-American, you can’t really do that when his family name is “Matsui” and when the Season 1 finale showed that his interactions with the American Dream pretty strongly involved his parents’ immigrant experience. But knowing intellectually that Ricky is Asian doesn’t always translate to actually perceiving him as an Asian person with all the implications and racial dynamics that entails.
An example of how this manifests: Ricky and Esther become a canon couple. Numerous posts begin to appear (and periodically still do) that express opinions along the lines of Ricky/Esther being the only tolerable “het” couple. Ignoring the fact that we don’t know Esther’s sexuality and we only have an offhand Ztream comment for Ricky, Ricky/Esther is a canonical interracial relationship between two non-white people, a Japanese man and a black woman. Interracial relationships are already extremely poorly represented in media, to say nothing of interracial relationships between non-white people. Yet we overlook the racial dynamics and only focus on the perceived queerness (or not) of the ship.
Or, for another example, taking the discussion on cultural appropriation and making it all about Cody’s flaws and character development, rather than considering how it affects Ricky as a Japanese man to see a white man disrespecting a part of his cultural heritage.
Anyways, I really urge D20 fans, especially if you’re not Asian, to start questioning and challenging how you really perceive characters, what kind of characteristics you tend to privilege and be drawn to and why, and what kind of fandom environment you shape in your interactions with the show and with other fans. This is not to say that Ricky should be everyone’s favourite character or that you can’t dislike him, but it is important to think about why we have the preferences that we do. I especially urge you to remember that Ricky Matsui is a Japanese-American character, that this was a deliberate choice which has been repeatedly brought up by Zac (who is a Japanese-American actor), and that you cannot and should not ignore Ricky’s heritage when you think and talk about him.
(And if you think Ricky is being an “asshole” to Cody just for being, frankly, mildly perturbed in his direction because Cody spent most of the season so far being very offensive to Ricky’s cultural heritage, I really encourage you to think critically about your opinions and why you hold them. And if, after thinking critically, you still don’t see why they’re wrong, please don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Your conscious racism is not something that is welcome in this fandom, and Asian fans are not here to teach you better)

You are under no obligation to answer this obviously, but I was wondering how I can help support POC on tumblr as a minor (I have no money to donate to people in need but I will still signal boost posts with donation links and such). I’m white but I want to show my solidarity and support when someone calls something out in the atla/lok fandom for being racist. How can I do this without speaking over people? I’m so deeply sorry if this irritates you, I just don’t know where else to ask.
Hi anon! First of all, I appreciate you coming to an adult with this question instead of a kid. It really does bother me that white folks on this platform ask kids of color to educate them and I would prefer that white folks come to me or another adult, personally. I think when it comes to criticisms of atla/lok (both the show and the fandom) that have to do with race, the most important things you can do are a) follow blogs run by poc, especially by folks who are Asian and/or Indigenous (which you should do anyway bc honestly the blogs run by poc in this fandom are superior) and b) support/reblog their content (this includes fics, fanart, hcs, criticism, etc) which again, you should do anyway because the poc on this platform produce some truly incredible content. With regard to criticism specifically, I would encourage you not to add on unnecessarily to what a poc is saying. Unfortunately statements like “white folks don’t clown on this post” are highly necessary on this platform, and thus I believe that white people who come across these posts and want to support people of color should reblog and not put anything in the tags, replies, or in their reblog. It’s unnecessary. Please don’t speak about topics which you do not understand.
Also, it’s probably a good idea to start reading about racist ideas and tropes in media. Some that get brought up a lot in atla/lok fandom are a) the tendency to make Brown people fighting against injustice in a violent way evil b) the sexualization of Brown folks generally, but in particular Brown women and girls c) the tendency to paint cultural appropriation as “progress” and to paint folks resistant to cultural appropriation as resistant to innovation and d) the appropriation of Hindu religious symbols and ideas in the creation of the Avatar, the combustion benders, chakras, and other important concepts within the atla/lok universe, and subsequent caricaturing of South Asians. There are of course so many more, but as I do not come from any of the cultures represented (or rather misrepresented) in atla/lok, I’d ask you to defer to folks who can speak on those tropes and their implications better than I can.
Also important to note: I am just one person, and people of color are not a monolith. I have a very specific experience as a person who benefits from light-skinned privilege, who was not raised in a religious minority group, who is not an immigrant and does not come from an immigrant background, who speaks English as my first language, who is not Indigenous, etc, etc, etc. My experiences are not the experiences of every poc and my opinions are not the opinions of every poc. We are not a monolith. I’m almost certain that another poc is going to see this and disagree with me, and that’s totally fine! (and if that’s you please do rb with your thoughts!) I’d really encourage you to listen to a variety of voices and really think critically about your role in all of this. Numerous people of color have written articles about how to support poc in various circumstances, and while those may not be directly applicable to fandom, I do believe that through reading and thinking critically about those resources you can come to some conclusions about other ways to support poc in this particular environment.

Beast Boy in YJO
A meta about Beast Boy featuring a critique of Young Justice Outsiders. Lots of my opinions below. Ignore if you don’t agree or don’t care.
Beast Boy as a whole, has been depicted wonderfully in Young Justice. Normally, I’m not a fan of changing character backstories (especially when it’s my favorite character), but Young Justice gave a refreshing, believable, and entertaining new twist to Gars story. It was a good change that opens a lot of fun elements to play around with from a storyteller perspective. In season 2, we were able to see the lovable, goofy kid that Gar is known to be. We also saw him confront the terrible loss of his birth mother, which we really haven’t seen in animation up until then. It was a good balance of heartwarming and tragedy that reflects a lot about Gars character. Now finally, we see Gar being shown as a grown, mature, confident leader. It’s wonderful, but...that’s not him.
It’s fantastic to see people gush and admire a character I’ve loved for years. I’m tickled pink by the fact that Young Justice has shown a positive light onto a character that often gets the shaft by DC. For years, I’ve been begging for Beast Boy to be treated seriously for a change. I was, and still am, tired of seeing him being nothing more than the butt of a joke. The class clown that only serves as comedic relief. In NTT, Gar was just the goofy kid, but at least Marv Wolfman addressed that and used it as a point of conflict for Gar. Part of his character development was seeing him grow and push out of the mold he had set for himself.
In 2003, Geoff Johns did an amazing job of continuing this character growth by putting Gar into a leadership role. Geoff challenged Gar. He explored the character and the potential of the character. For the first time, we saw Gar as an adult and Geoff created the perfect balance of an older, mature Gar Logan with the lovable, goofy kid that he was known to be. Geoff didn’t wipe away all the silliness and lightheartedness that made Gar’s character fun to read about. Why? Probably because he understood that part of Beast Boy was more than just childish antics. Gar uses humor to mask his depression and self-loathing. For him, being the kid of the team took the pressure off of him to be the hero and it was easier for him to live up to people’s expectations when all they expected was for him to crack a few jokes. Gar wasn’t serious, because he didn’t want to be taken seriously. Not yet, anyway. As a kid, humor was a defense mechanism and that’s not really something one can grow out of. It’s like a bad habit and habits die hard. That’s why, when he does reach the point where he wants to be taken seriously, it’s difficult for him to drop some of his childish ways.
Throughout Geoff’s run, we see Gar go through some of these growing pains. It takes time to grow up. No kid wakes up an adult. Well, a mature, self-assured adult. It takes a lot of learning and developing as a person before anyone can reach the point where they are their best selves. And someone going from a follower to a leader has, even more, to learn before they are prepared to help and teach others. Geoff recognized this and addressed this growth in Gar.

We see Gar go through many obstacles as he learns how to be an effective leader and also how to balance this with his personal life. He goes through ups and downs. He’s reluctant at first to become the leader. He doubts himself. He second guesses himself. He struggles to find his own leadership style. He’s imperfect. And that why I love him so much! His journey from childhood to adulthood is relatable. His struggles are natural and personable. And when he does succeed, it’s meaningful.
Young Justice this season gives us the serious Beast Boy that I always wanted, but they do so without showing us his development. It’s just one day he’s a sweet kid and the next he’s this broody teenager. We see a little bit of reasoning behind the change in his character in “Nightmare Monkies” when we see what he went through in between seasons 2 and 3, but that little, tiny glimpse didn’t have the same effect as it would have, had we been on that journey with him.
Because of this, I think it contributes to why his current status as a team leader feels off to me. It’s not organic. The way Gar is talking doesn’t sound like him. His confidence, while desirable in a leader, isn’t how Gar leads. When Gar stands up on his soapbox and starts preaching about a revolution, he walks it back a little amending it to “at least a small one.” That was a peak of some of his self-doubt, but not at all where he should be at this point. I totally believe Gar is a great leader, but he has to work to get there. Young Justice isn't making him work for it and I think that’s why his portrayal this season bothers me. It’s the reverse of the problem DC normally has with Gar. Instead of making him a hollowed out clown, they made him into a hollowed out brood.
So to my point, I wish DC knew how to give us complex, characters with depth and layers, outside of comics. Young Justice doesn’t quite have the “it's a kids show” excuse anymore and I think they really missed the mark with this one. Don’t get me wrong, I am and will forever be grateful to YJ for shining this positive light on Beast Boy. My boy deserves the love and attention! But for the people just now starting to appreciate my favorite character, please know that this is not him at his best. There is so much more YJ could have done for him and what you see is not Beast Boy at his all.
Beast Boy is a “rise to the occasion” leader, not a “natural born” leader.

I’d also like to announce that @thephantomporg84 is now masquerading as @derelict-stranger, and I got a few messages a few days ago about how she was gonna take down her account, and how she wants me to block all of you, which is ridiculous as you are all blogs that I have known and followed way before her and also I don’t know you either. I told her that I didn’t want to be involved in her drama, but here I am.
It’s kinda hard for me to make this post, as I genuinely thought that she was cool in the beginning - she helped to give me more DMC asks in my inbox, and she always reblogged my stuff, as I’ve been trying to make it with the big guys - like @myfairmidnightladyspade.
But I saw the stuff that she says online to you all, and I think I got some anon messages from her asking if I was a terf or not... and yeah - my heart broke. I feel like I have been deceived in some way. What I wanted to be there was someone who was cool, and funny to talk to, but turns out that person is petty, heartless, immature and straight up spiteful.
I may have to justify myself in why I got messages from her - I was only trying to console her, but to do it in a neutral way as I wanted no part in her drama.
Also - i’m probably not gonna show any evidence for how much she sucks cause there’s tags and anon posts dedicated to that sort of thing
I want you on tumblr, and you on Reddit to find her, and in the /v/ section of 4chan to block her and report her for all she’s done. I want you to wipe her existence from the internet until there is nothing left.
Now - I need to change the flow of the conversation by directing it to you, @derelict-stranger.
I’d like you to kindly log off, take a breather and think, for a second about the actions that you’ve done to the people that I’ve mentioned above.
I’d also like to tell you that your suggestion to block all those people above is complete nonsense. Why would you make me block blogs who have perfectly decent and awesome content, and to those who I have talked to longer than you? why would you make me block blogs who I don’t know? Quit trying to get me on your side. I want no part in your drama like I said before, and stop trying to manipulate me into getting me to give a shit about you.
I’d also like to tell you that your situation is entirely self-inflicted. That you trying to talk to me won’t work, the only reason that people are apparently “attacking you” - is because you, in fact, are the instigator, are the catalyst of all this hatred.
You - @derelict-stranger, lack any ability whatsoever to disagree well. From where I’m looking, all of this started because you don’t like Vergil from the Devil May Cry games and you don’t like the plot of 5, which seems extremely stupid to me, as he’s only a small-ish part of 1, one of the best boss-fights in 3 and just a mere mention in 4. The fact that you need to incessantly attack content creators who merely like him is stupid. Either keep those opinions to yourself, ignore them, or do my favourite -> stick ‘em up your big stupid ass.
It’s also stupid that when people merely like him - you have to bring in your own shitty opinions. No one asked you what you thought, and I’m pretty sure you’re actively seeking out fights with people just to feel good about yourself. It’s also super hypocritical of you ragging on about how much Vergil sucks, when you go crazy for Kylo Ren, as they share some similarities in terms of their vibes and traits. (Yeah - I see you asking for smutty Kylo Ren x Reader requests online.....) Why do you get pissy when people like villainous fictional characters - do your knickers
What I just want to know is what kind of personal gratification you get when you actively hate on a character, and what kind of gratification you get when just because someone disagrees with you - that you have to result using death threats, rape threats, pedophilia threats, racism, slurs, and ableism, transphobia, alt-right rhetoric, neo-Nazi shit, pro-Trump, and homophobic comments to content creators just doin’ their own thing. Is it just to feel like the bigger man, is it to make yourself sound smarter than the other person (Cause you don’t) - like what actually motivates you, what actually makes you want to shit on other people’s parades, huh? Sounds to me like you need to get a life.
The fact that you always need to play the victim is sad and pathetic too:
- That you’re on the spectrum: - Okay, there are a lot of people who are on the spectrum here on tumblr. But they don’t use it as an excuse to justify shitty behaviour especially if it’s unitentional. as I’m sure they and the people they know are. I’m sure they apologise and try to get on with life like how NT people do. As you know - a lot of people of the spectrum feel like they’re being treated as sub-human being babies that do nothing but screech all the time, and they’re taking action to change those perceptions. Your behaviours are not helping their cause.
- That you use depression as an excuse - I’m kinda sympathetic to the whole mental health issues thing. I have them too. In fact, I am a hot mess. But I don’t use that to excuse me hurting other people with intention, and I’m sure many others don’t either. At least 1/4 or 1/3 will have some mental health issues in their life, and yeah, it sucks, and it’s common but it doesn’t make them exempt from them being called out on their shitty acts. the fact that so many people are and can be mentally ill doesn’t make you special, and it doesn’t give you a free pass to attack others.
- The fact that you try to bait people into making anti-semitic comments, so you can call them anti-semitic. Dude, that’s low. I’m pretty sure that’s gaslighting and manipulation as well. You don’t get the right to use your religion/race in that way as a defence when you’re feeling attacked so that you come off a better person. I’m friends with many jewish people, and they’d never have the gall to do that. I know that your peeople have had it rough, but you can’t use that in an argument just to prove that the other one is a piece of shit, when it is in fact you. I’m muslim, a WOC, and ancestrally speaking, from a country that your so-beloved president essentially banned their right to seek a better life in the states. For as long as I can remember - I’ve seen news about my kind being universally hated, I’ve been brought up in a post-9/11 world where for as long as I can remember that me and our kind are the enemy (so I can sympathise) - but you don’t see me and other muslims here using those petty tactics that you use, because unlike you, we’re not myopic and we know that won’t get us anywhere.
I mean, this behaviour sounds bratty and childish - so I was thinking, she’ll probably grow out of it. Then I find that you’re in you’re mid-twenties, and I think “you really haven’t grown up at all, have you?”, and honestly it just makes the behaviour worse as you are resulting to middle school/high school tactics -> especially making me block all those people, calling them sociopaths and evil bitches. This ain’t high school or Mean Girls, moron, this is a fandom. A place where people can create, share, like and comment on content that makes you happy. I don’t think you understand what that means - cause all I see, and everyone sees is you spewing hatred everywhere. Fandoms are supposed to make you feel included, feel happy, feel safe, be a place to make friends. I don’t think you know that, and I don’t think you are even smart enough to realise that you are the reason why our fandom isn’t happy.
And honestly, at this point, the hatred you are getting is well deserved. You deserve to feel like shit if all you are going to do is make others feel like shit.
I don’t know what else to say but:

Hey, i'm actually a "truscum" i found out recently, but im a little confused on the whole ordeal. Im not even sure if i actually am truscum or not- because some posts seem to tie up with me being one but others dont, but i saw you were really against them, so i wanted to ask if you're okay with a friendly calm conversation about it? I am very confused and i just want to learn a bit more or find out if i'm wrong about the whole ordeal. Are you open to it?
i'll be honest im not sure how friendly i can be with this kind of conversation because i really truly genuinely, and i don't use this word lightly, Hate truscum and its hard for me to really be civil about the discussion. but for the sake of this and me giving you a lot of benefit of the doubt that this ask is in good faith i'll explain why i do not like the entire truscum ideology
1. i guess i'll start off with the Big One - the claim that dysphoria is Required to be trans. i'll preface this by saying that i am someone who has experienced, and currently Experiences in wildly different degrees depending on what is happening in my life, dysphoria throughout my entire life. i had my entire teenage and young adult years stolen from me by it. i won't get into details about it because that is a Very Very Personal subject for me, but needless to say dysphoria is something that was a very prevalent part of my life.
anyway. the notion that dysphoria is a Trans Requirement™ is something that i hugely disagree with. i used to think that me figuring out i was a trans woman was because i experienced dysphoria, but frankly the opposite is true. dysphoria is what made me refuse to believe i was a woman or could ever be one. it made me believe i was a man and that was all i would ever be. it wasn't until i really started experimenting with my gender and unpacking a lot of stuff i felt about myself that i started to finally realize the woman i was. i first started trying our she/her pronouns nearing four years now, and started using the name Alice a few months after that. being referred to as a woman & experimenting with different feminine things gave me such incredible feelings of euphoria that i still experience to this day whenever i discover something new about my identity.
and that is something ive heard from SO many other trans people i know. or different things too - i know people who are completely fine with their bodies, just certain words and terms never felt Right to them. because the thing with dysphoria is that it, like all things gender related, is a product of society. dysphoria only exists because transphobia exists - people are told that there are these two rigid things that you are and HERE is what makes you one of those things, and those things are drilled into you literally since birth. everything from colors to jobs to hobbies to cars to entertainment to clothing to Literally Everything is gendered, and when that happens then of fucking course there are gonna be people who don't fall in line with that, and when it's so instilled into people and seen as such societal norms of COURSE people are going to have trouble with that.
and that's not even getting into the subject of gender on a biological level. the fact of the matter is that the two sex system Isn't True and that biological sex is very complicated. intersex people exist, people with all kinds of different chromosomes exist, people of certain body types that have higher levels of different hormones exist, SO much goes into that subject that frankly narrowing it down to two things just doesn't Work
and that's the real problem at the end of the day. dysphoria only exists because of a fucked up gender binary that clashes with both biology and sociology. people are complicated on both a biological and personal level and having set binaries for things is bound to cause confusion & doubt.
like, people's identities are SUCH personal things in so many different ways. there isn't any Right Way™ to be trans. i know trans women with beards, trans women who have no interest in starting hrt, trans men who wear dresses and makeup, non-binary people who make no effort to be androgynous, i know SO many different identities and different people. because the fact is that there's no right way to be trans because nothing is inherently gendered including people's very bodies. people are themselves and there is no Right way to be themselves.
that's on top of the lack of education when it comes to the subject of gender. such a huge part too of me figuring out i was trans was literally learning that it was even a fucking option. i genuinely didn't know just Being A Girl was an option. reading up on gender stuff and researching the different idea of transitioning was intrinsic in my figuring out who i was because oh shit turns out there are people like me and that is Okay.
like, dysphoria literally could've been a non-issue for me. i could've lived in a world where i could just Exist and enjoy whatever i wanted without it being weird. i could've decided so much sooner that i wasn't happy with the way my body was growing and not spent my entire teen years being so confused why i was so sad seeing my girl peers. i could have from the start just gotten to be a girl and never have had dysphoria be part of the equation.
im not trans being i experience dysphoria. im trans because being a woman is rad as hell and it's what i wanted. im trans because changing my name to Alice was the biggest moment of my entire life. im trans because rebelling against the societal restraints of gender is fucking metal. im trans because my friends can't even remember me ever not being me now. im trans because im a great older sister. im trans because god nerfed me and i said nah thanks man but im not feeling it.
my identity and my gender are very personal and complicated things, and narrowing it down to "i experience dysphoria" is frankly insulting to me.
anyway, that's the big point out of the way, so here's some shorter ones
2. this is kinda expanding on the last point, but truscum both insisting non-binary people aren't a thing and them insisting "transtrenders" exist is hmm Bad
the sheer fact of the matter is the concept of being non-binary has existed from the oldest known records of human history on TOP of that concept being prevalent in many different cultures so what do ya know there's a healthy dose of racism involved in the denial of non-binary people. the gender binary is such a western concept and there are SO many different cultures where different gender identities exist.
and, frankly, going back to the above point that gender is fucking Fake and is a societal concept - again, of fucking course there are going to be people who see a rigid set of rules on gender and are like "well wait that doesn't fit me" so of COURSE non-binary people exist
on the subject of "transtrenders" i feel like i shouldn't even HAVE to get into this subject because of how inherently transphobic it is. the concept doesn't exist. there are people who experiment with their gender and then decide their assigned one is fine. there are people who go through all kinds of different identities. there are people who come out as a different gender and then revert back due to backlash. there are people who get told the way they present their gender is the Wrong Way™ and get branded a trender. it's a dangerous thought process that literally does nothing but serve the cis status quo and make people afraid to experiment and think about their identities.
3. the idea that Those Evil Trenders™ are stealing resources from the Real Trans People™ is, frankly, fucking bullshit. issues when it comes to trans people finding difficulty accessing healthcare comes from a transphobic society hellbent on denying us care on top of fucked up healthcare systems in general. hormones aren't some limited quality hard to acquire thing - when i started hrt transferring my prescription from my clinic to my local pharmacy was a non-issue because it's something basically any pharmacy will have for ALL kinds of different purposes. it's an issue because healthcare in general is a god damn Mess on TOP of inherent transphobia
and, frankly, truscum are directly involved in that transphobia in the medical field. unless you find an informed consent clinic you're going to have to jump through all kinds of hoops to prove you're Actually Trans™ by getting referrals from other (almost always cis) people and then get put on ridiculous waitlists to make sure you're not about to change your mind. that kind of attitude is only encouraged by truscum and it is one of the biggest source of trans people having such difficulty accessing healthcare.
4. truscum as far as im concerned are no different than any other transphobe. two years ago before i started hrt i was harassed by truscum multiple times, each time having them tell me i wasn't trans, that i was just a trender, and it genuinely boggles my mind that anyone thinks misgendering me because i disagreed with their ideology is Woke, actually. I've seen so many fellow trans women getting called men by truscum who disagreed with them. i was actively told i shouldn't start hrt because i "wasn't really trans and was gonna ruin my life"
i really hope all of people live in anger every day knowing ive been on hrt over a year and a half and am fucking Thriving
anyway that's all i got to say on the matter i realize my points became less thought out as it went on but frankly the first point is enough for me to not like truscum

As for your questions… hmm… it’s for sure a good one.
I’m going to get a bit… strategical on that one. Hope you don’t mind this approach.
Tumblr and real life are definitely alike in a lot of aspects, while in others they’re polar opposites. For the sake of keeping things neatly shelved, I’m going to focus on tumblr in this post.
＊*☆HOW TO GET ART NOTICED ON TUMBLR☆*＊

1. We have to understand how the tumblr sharing system works.
I know this sounds a bit too obvious. I mean, we all know HOW. It’s by reblogging!
I know that there’s a BIG opinion on tumblr that we should share and reblog art as much as possible to help artists get noticed. And that’s TRUE. It’s absolutely correct.
One thing I don’t agree with on that front is the guilt-tripping factor of it all. Like somehow people are responsible for the downfall of less popular artists because they didn’t reblog stuff enough. People are really quick to point at their followers and say “I GOT 100 OF Y’ALL HERE AND ONLY 3 ARE REBLOGGING ANYTHING”.
I get it. It’s frustrating!
But the fact of the matter is, you can’t force people to reblog stuff.
Instead, I recommend we harvest the power of the sharing we already have. We have to be smart about this. What I’m going to go into is a bit less concrete. We have to think about the PEOPLE who are doing the reblogging.
Artists aren’t the ONLY ones with motivations for getting their stuff seen. And because they create media they are, for lack of a better word… a vendor! The buck STARTS with them, but it doesn’t stop with them.
They have to also think about what the people are going to do with their product once it’s reblogged. Once someone buys from the vendor, they don’t just keep it forever. They distribute it to the others. And sometimes, those others distribute it again. We have to think about the bigger picture, and think about how FAR your art has the potential to go!
So, to get started we need to know… WHO are the ones buying from the vendor… and why?
What kind of rebloggers ARE there?
I’m going to give my own opinion here, and feel free to disagree. But the 3 biggest rebloggers most important to the artist are these:
1. The Pleaser
Sounds sexy, right? In fact, the pleaser comes in many different forms. But essentially their goal is the same - they reblog stuff like aesthetic posts, and other pleasing things. They themselves tend to like a lot of stuff and reblog mostly beautiful photos, nice designs, and lots of fanart of whatever they’re into at the time. Comics and story-like posts are good here (although if they’re too long, people tend to lose interest.)
How to get reblogged by a Pleaser?
Appeal to their fandom, their interest, and make something that moves them. Pleasers are most active around the time when the new episode of their favorite show comes out, or when their favorite holiday comes around. Drawing fanart during its peak popularity will usually catch a Pleasers’ attention, as will drawing aesthetic Halloween posts around, well, Halloween.
2. The Teaser
The Teaser is the class clown and the shitposter, and they reblog memes and jokes voraciously. In the Teaser’s audience are other teasers - and they also tend to be very generous rebloggers. The fact of the matter is - memes sell reblogs faster than any aesthetic art will. We’re social creatures and getting a laugh out of our followers is worth a LOT of fake internet points.
How do I get reblogged by the Teaser?
Memes. I mean, you knew this was coming, right? During the height of some new tumblr joke, people usually welcome any unusual spin, or any funny variation of an old joke.
My meme redraws have consistently been popular and have ‘boomed’ very quickly. For example, this redraw of sapphire from Steven Universe doing ‘the scroll of truth’ jumped to 5k almost within a day.
Many people peek at my page ‘for the lols’ but end up staying for the art, or because there’s another thing I post they’re interested in. Either way, memes are a gateway drug… to your blog.
3. The Librarian
The Librarian is a bit more rare, but they’re still important, because they tend to reblog a lot. They’re a bit unusual in the sense that they do this for themselves, instead of for an audience. The blog of the librarian is mostly just a replacement for bookmarking interesting stuff. These people tend to reblog tutorials, reference posts, and things they want to read later on.
How to get reblogged by a Librarian?
Make things that people want to keep around. Charts, references, tutorials. Chances are, the librarian will snag it up eventually.
Of course, these 3 aren’t the ONLY type of tumblr blogger. In fact, many of them are a mix of these 3. But the main point is…
2. What do most of these (and other) people on tumblr have in common?
Just like you, many people (although not all) want to get their stuff SEEN. You might be creating the original product, but they choose whether or not to distribute it to their audience.
Everyone is playing the same game, no matter which part of the chain they’re on.
You, as an artist, have the biggest responsibility to think about this long-term. Not only 1 reblog down the line.
For example, let’s return to one of my meme-posts that I did about wrist pain (carpal tunnel). When I made this, I had a vague idea of who would consume it. Obviously… other artists. But the reason that this got so popular? Is not only because fellow artists follow me. It’s because the artists that follow me also have followers who are also, conveniently, artists. That’s why despite the fact that many people reblogged the post directly from me - even MORE of them reblogged it from @sergle (shoutout to sergle! u rock) who is also a popular artist and also has an audience who were prone to want to reblog the post.
See that orange dot? That’s me. See that bigger blue dot? That’s sergle.
In a way, this is a game of chance. Will something you reblog be seen by someone with a large enough audience to keep it going? The thing is, we don’t know until it happens. And oftentime, the only way to achieve this is to keep trying. Stubbornly.
But you can’t just headbutt the wall in the same place and hope it eventually crumbles. You have to look for a door.
3. So what’s the door?
Take a look at your art. Is it consumable BEYOND the surface level of your followers?
Sometimes people get discouraged because their fanart is way more popular than their original art. Although I share their frustration, there’s a good reason for this, and your followers aren’t to blame.
The thing is, fanart is consumable at deep reblog levels. If you post fanart, there’s a good chance that even 3-4 reblogs down the line, there’s going to be a person who sees it and thinks ‘hey, I know Steven Universe. My followers know Steven Universe. I’ll reblog this!’ Fandoms are efficient because they already have a lot of context for the consumption of the art. They have a story (humans love stories), they’re invested in it, they’re interested in it, and there’s a good chance that sharing more stuff about it will get them more interaction with their mutuals, even if they’re not consciously thinking about all this as they reblog.
Unfortunately, that’s just not true for your original art. Many of us have beautiful, wonderful stories - but they’re not available to a wide audience. They’re not easily consumed, they’re not easily accessed (in comparison to being on netflix, for example). If you post a picture of your OC - maybe your immediate pool of followers who know that OC will reblog it. But their own followers who aren’t directly following you will not have any connection, emotional or otherwise, to that character. They simply don’t have a reason to care, and they don’t have any means to. Even if they visit your blog - will it be easy to find similar content? Have you got your links available on desktop AND mobile? Is it easy to find the beginning of your story? Is it free of mistakes and easy to read?
Large companies that make shows or comics funnel tons of money into making their media consumable. There’s a LOT of effort that goes into advertising, too. You, as an independent artist, simply don’t have that kind of manpower. That’s not your fault - but it’s also not your followers’ fault. Why are they supposed to reblog things that their own followers will never understand and connect with?
4. Back to square one: how do I get noticed?
I’m gonna keep this short and sweet because I feel like I already took up a lot of your time. After everything I’ve said, hopefully this will make sense:
Make content that has a connection to your audience somehow. Make it relatable to their life. Make it relatable to what’s currently going on. Make it worth their while to look at it.
Make content that’s easy to understand. Super detailed drawings, with nothing to focus on are difficult to digest. Simpler, sharper drawings that someone can understand within 3 seconds of looking at it are the most digestible of all. This isn’t a museum.
If you’re creating content that goes with a story, MAKE THE STORY. I know it’s tempting to create just a whole bunch of character sketch sheets and leave it at that, but you can’t complain about not getting an audience when your audience doesn’t have anything to consume in the first place.
Make the story AVAILABLE. Organize your tags. Make sure those tags are easily accessible. People will never like 100% of your art, so many it easy for them to find what they WILL like.
Don’t be afraid of fanart. Fanart gets you connected with people who like stories and content similar to yours.
Don’t be afraid to follow and reblog people that you want to connect with. Don’t be afraid to make them stuff and @ them.
Post your stuff to a LOT of places! Your audience is somewhere out there - probably not only on tumblr. You have to spread yourself thin sometimes, but make sure the account can all lead back to your main hub.
And last but not least…
Critically re-evaluate your art at least once a year. (I’m personally working on this.) Just because you’ve been drawing for years, and just because your art might be incredible doesn’t mean it’s appealing to people. Sounds weird, right? But think about it - there’s TONS of people who are not that amazing at anatomy, or coloring… but they still have a huge audience, and people connect with their art. A lot of times, it’s because their art is straightforward and easy to read/understand.
Ask a friend to critique your art. Ask them if they understand your work, or if it’s difficult to make out. Ask them what your work inspires in them. Ask them what they DO like about your work - and exaggerate that!
There’s a LOT that goes into art… no matter it’s a whole industry! Doing it all on your own is HARD and it’s a bit unthinkable how much artists have to do to compete with industries. But it’s not impossible, and it’s definitely worth it. :)

Opinion on true love: Love is for the heroes and Oma’s no gross hero! Ahh, but should he get a romantic partner, he would immediately believe in it. His opinions on things are transient.
Opinion on love at first sight: He ... sorta believes in it? He decides his opinion on someone very quickly, and that includes whether or not he has a crush. Crushes for Oma are very intense and last a long time. As an example, he’s carried a crush on Maki for years, and I’d say it’s intense enough to call love, but others may disagree.
How ‘romantic’ are they: He doesn’t want anyone to know but he actually does try to be romantic with his partners, he just goes about it in a way that might be confusing to outsiders. He basically blackmails people into either giving or receiving attention because he refuses to be rejected lmao (note: this is because he likes to get whatever he wants, not because he’ll be hurt if he is rejected. He’d probably be amused if you managed to get around his blackmail)... When you’re alone with him, he also likes to cuddle and give his partner lots of kisses.

For these reasons, he would find it a bit difficult to start up a sexual relationship with his romantic partner... because to him that’s not for them, they’re special! DO NOT BOYCOTT WYNONNA EARP
So it has come to my attention that some people are calling for a boycott of Wynonna Earp over the gooverly/wynonna kiss. You want to cancel the one show that has treated their lesbian couple better than any other show to date over a peck on the lips? If you think it’s ok to boycott everyrhing you don’t like, if you think it will be ok to go harass Andras and the actressess over this then unfollow me. I firmly believe that Dom and Mel would have voiced concerns over the scene and I am as convinced Andras would have listened. .
You need to understand that this was not a waverly/wynonna kiss. It was a gooverly/wynonna kiss. It makes sense. The demon wants to be in a position of power but it needs a host that is dark enough for it to have the right habitat. What does it say about Nicole that the demon didn’t transfer to her? It can’t cause Nicole is FUCKING GOOD. Wynonna is good but also flawed and grieving and the demon will feed on that.
And isn’t it ironic that Wynonna the demon slayer is now possessed?
I have seen the argument that now homophobes will latch onto this to call us perverts. Because they will lift it out of context. Newsflash: the first people to lift it out of context are the people getting their knickera bunched up over an incest that isn’t there. I am looking at one particular “famous” user on here with whom I can’t even have a discussion cause apparently they are blocking everyone disagreeing on this. And they don’t even watch the show.
If you are a fan of the show you should be able to read the subtext.
Also spare me with the “this is what happens when the straights write a queer character” bullshit. Do you need to be a serial killer to write murder stories? You think Stephen King dresses as a clown overnight and drags kids to their doom? What about if someone told you that you an LGBTQ person can’t write queer romance until you fell in love. Wouldn’t you call that bullshit?
So Andras went from hero to zero in one scene. Check yourselves. You are here complaining about content that she created in the first place so you could complain about it. Without people trying we wouldn’t have anything. And their sexual orientation doesn’t matter one bit.
And this is the reason why instead of growing our content dwindles. Because writers are afraid to try, because when you do try and get it wrong you get death threats. You only need one “famous” internet celeb to whip up a mob except that on the internet you can say whatever the fuck you want without repercussions. At least a lynch mob in real life can be lynched back.
You know, all you need to write good characters and good plots is empathy (and research). Something lacking on both sides of the fence. But at least Andras is trying and if I learned something from the way she handles things it won’t be easy but Wynonna and Waverly will have a resolution about it. Because as soon as Waverly figures what has happened you bet your ass she will try to save her sister.
Because they are Earps. No matter what a birth certificate may say.
So don’t you dare ruin this fandom, which is the best fandom I have been in ever, because even different ships support each other. You don’t want to watch fine move along. Leave us be.

I wish people were more careful about parasocial relationships. Like yeah you probably never will meet Chris Evans and feeling like you have a personal relationship with him and know way more about him than you possibly truly could doesn’t make you bad or anything but like, it’s not great for you? And it’s a slippery slope in more ways than people even think about. It’s dangerous to invest your own self in someone you don’t know, for one. You see a lot of cult and hivemind mentalities with singers and actors and youtubers and podcasters, where even when like, a writer is outed as a child molester or active racist some people will write 4 page essays 14 times a day to defend their guilty conscience and their fave’s pride trying to convince everyone and their dad actually it’s a conspiracy or it’s ok somehow or it’s not a big deal. And you see a lot of people not only support terrible things and people, but actively become worse to make doing that okay to themself. If you delude yourself into thinking a person you never met is not only your best friend or loves you, but that you know them? It suddenly becomes very personal when you find out they did something that sucked or they do suck, and also it’s so easy to convince yourself everyone else is wrong bc you pretend you know them and kind of believe it to truly do. And start defending them like you would your childhood best friend you actually know would never commit murder or condone slavery or something: There is no part of that that is healthy or good for you.
But that’s the side people talk about more. What people talk about less is that this is also a big problem within fandoms and for small content creators. While your parasocial relationship with Chris Evans is your problem and the people you harass on his behalf’s (note: I picked Chris bc I know of absolutely no scandal abt him so it seemed he’d be a clear ‘this is not targeted at all’ choice but if it wasn’t I like Evans; I know little abt him but he seems cool and this is not at all abt him or anything), because Chris is safely up in his huge house with his bodyguards and several levels of separation. He’ll probably never have to know you exist even if you try to stalk him. But in a fandom and with small content creators, there’s an added layer, which is when you read a web comic or fic or see a small group’s original animated series, a lot of people come up with a like parasocial-lite idea of who that person is, and bring it with them to meeting that person directly. I’ve seen a similar thing happen with people really big in fandoms, where they’re so well known people expect them to be a certain way just because of their content. And sometimes that means you get the YouTube white man treatment and the ‘fandom mom’ exerts really creepy hive mind influence (especially over smaller and very interconnected fandoms), and sometimes it means a popular artist or writer gets harassed because a fan meets the real person and realizes they’re not the idealized version they already invented, and take that personally. Which is really not cool, and depressing at best to chilling at worst. It should be a simple concept that just because you read someone’s web comic you don’t know them, and that they’re going to be a living breathing human with complexity and also existence and interest outside of that comic, and not everything about them will be the way you guess or want, and the idealized version of them you have in your head is not their responsibility or fault or problem, but most people don’t seem to get it. I’ve met a lot of super cool people through various aspects of fandom stuff from fan, to artists, projects, games, to writer, and some are normal and great, even if they met me because of my work, but there’s also been a disturbing number who approach me excitedly with this idea of me they made up, who are repulsed violently the second they see even a minute divergence from it, and seem to take that as some personal betrayal, or failure, and can’t handle the fact that I am in fact not a celebrity, but just another person trying to make sense of life and do the right thing and look out for the people I love and the ones I don’t know. It’s. Something. Alienating maybe. How many people seem to handle even tiny content creators that way. It’s certainly not pleasant.
Anyway, I’m only writing this because I’ve seen more parasocial posts tonight than like, ever before, because of to the best of what I can gather something happened on YouTube? And I figure while it’s temporarily in the public consciousness, if you see this, please consider how you treat big name fandom members and small content creators, and think of us. Even positive dehumanizing (as in idealization) is still dehumanizing and not actually positive at all or enjoyable and it does hurt people. And we are...people. So. Yeah, that’s all.
