Chapter 24: Analysis and Discussion + Conclusion
Tumblr media
So here we are at Chapter 24, the very last chapter of this novelization. It's been a wild ride, right? From different dialogue, to entirely new characters, to scenes that weren't in the final film at all, this has been SO much more enjoyable than watching the actual movie. The changes made in the novelization add so so much to the story, and a lot of what I didn't like about the movie was either changed or left out entirely. I hope you enjoyed reading about it and reading along with me, because I sure as hell loved writing about it. With all that said and done, let's see how this story ends, right?
Hairy Hold finally shows up to join the Resistance...after everything's already over, of course. Dex congratulates everyone on a job well done, but tells them they still have a lot of work to do- the store opens in just four hours. It's than that Dr Nustrix shows up and says he's created an antidote that should bring all the Ikes they lost back to life. He spritzes Polar Penguin with it and he wakes up, as if he were just in a deep sleep the entire time. This twist is a little silly, but I'm a sucker for happy endings so I'll let it slide. The only difference here between the novelization and the movie's version of events is the additional line from Dex about their store opening in 4 hours, which is pretty minor but does remind us there's still work to be done.
Tumblr media
Polar says he knew Dex would save him, and Sunshine tells Dex how proud she is of him as she jumps into his arms. She throws a raisin in the air and he once again catches it in his mouth. Dan lampshades how everything really turned out perfect in the end, and Dex pulls the ring from his pocket (remember, from when he was going to propose to Sunshine right at the start of all this?) and she instantly says yes, the whole store cheering as the two finally kiss. Dan almost starts crying until he notices Sweet Cakes giving him a flirty look, and realizes he might be getting some action too. This scene is once again the same across both the novelization and the movie, with the exception of the brief exchange between Dan and Sweet Cakes at the end which is only in the novelization. So, this is the second-to-last page, and with only one more to go, you'd THINK things would stay the same and the novelization wouldn't end in a completely different way to the movie, right? Well, you'd be wrong- check this out!
Tumblr media
We cut to the next morning, back in the supermarket. Mr Leonard looks around and sees burnt, destroyed Brand X products littering the floor and is horrified until he notices all the colorful, familiar products are back on their shelves, everything back the way it should be. He's suitably puzzled, and thinks he must be dreaming.
A month later, Mr Leonard is helping a customer load groceries into her cart. It's noted all the products at the top of the bag are ones we're now familiar with- Kaptain Krispy chips, Polar Pleasure ice cream, and Twinkleton toothpaste. As she leaves, a large delivery truck pulls up- but this time it's a new shipment Mr Leonard's been eagerly awaiting. He opens the box and pulls out a brand new box of cereal- "New and Improved Cinnamon Sleuth Cereal- Now with Sunshine Goodness Raisins".
...
So, uh...YEAH. This is COMPLETELY different from how the movie ends, and it's a total last-second left turn. For context, in the movie after Dex proposes to Sunshine, we cut to their wedding at the Copbanana. It's being ordained by a rabbi, and Dex stomps on a carton of milk before he and Sunshine kiss. Dr Nustrix is shocked by this, and loudly exclaims "Dex is JEWISH?" with Dan explaining of course he is- his cereal is kosher. The credits start rolling, interrupted several times by brief interludes showing all the Ikes having fun at Dex and Sunshine's wedding- such as Sunshine trying to take Dex's hat off, only to find another hat underneath it, Maximilius and Flushington crying at how beautiful the ceremony was, and Dan bragging to a bunch of sugar Ikes about how much he helped during the war against Brand X. There are literally no similarities AT ALL to compare between these two endings.
I VASTLY prefer the novelization's ending, however. It's way more low-key with Mr Leonard baffled by what happened to his store overnight, wondering what happened to Brand X and why everything's suddenly back to normal. It's like he finally gets a hint that something more is going on behind the doors of his supermarket after it closes, a brief wink toward the world of Marketropolis he'll never see. Although we lose the revelation of Dex being Jewish (losing out on some much-needed representation), the much more subtle implication that Dex and Sunshine are now married by showing a new and improved Cinnamon Sleuth cereal with Sunshine Goodness raisins now in the mix is a much sweeter and genuinely endearing way for the story to end. It does raise some questions about how marriage works in Marketropolis- for instance, if Mr Clean marries Charlie Tuna, do the two products combine and release an all-purpose cleaner that smells like fish?
Regardless, it's a lovely ending to the story, and I really hope everyone enjoyed reading along with me. I definitely enjoyed reading this and talking about all the changes made, and I absolutely consider Foodfight! The Junior Novelization to be a far superior version of the story. Of course, a lot of that is likely down to the novelization being based on an earlier version of script and so the writers deserve a share of the credit for that, but without this novelization we may have never even got to know what that early script was like!
Now that I've finished going through the novelization in its entirety, I'll put it up on the Internet Archive for everyone to read whenever they want- after all, this is the only copy known to exist, and I want to make sure it's preserved forever so everyone can enjoy it. Thank you again to anyone who's been reading this blog and joining me on this journey, I'm honored to have shared this experience with you. I mean, how often do you get to read the only copy of a book known to exist, share it with the entire world, AND unravel a huge part of the tangled web of mysteries that the production of Foodfight! is?
I'll update this blog again when I've uploaded the book to the Internet Archive, but for now this is Tiffany Amber, signing off!

Annon-Guy: Weekly Reminder - Spider-Man: "Pizza time!" 🍕. So, what would you say the 15 Symphonia characters (we're excluding Tenabrae and Aqua from this sense they don't really need food) would like on their pizza (provided it's a thing in Aeslia)? I know according to "Help Me! Professor Kokonoe!" Kokonoe likes pineapple on her pizza while Bang Shishigami considers that blasphemous along with putting raisins in dry curry.
Bang Shishigami is correct. People are allowed to enjoy whatever they like on pizza. And clearly pineapple on pizza exists because some people like it. We call these people "wrong." (I'm kidding but I can't imagine what anyone finds particularly enjoyable about that combo.) But I probably like a lot of weird things that some people hate. I know loads of people hate mayo, but I love it. Eggs in general are a thing some people hate. I enjoy eggs almost any way you can make them except straight raw (raw egg white grosses me out) or burnt. Sunny side, over easy, poached, par boiled, hard boiled, scrambled. Eggs are delicious. And I know for some people they suck. It's all opinion. And my opinion about pineapple on pizza is... that it blasphemes against pineapple and pizza. That said. Lloyd seems like he enjoys most toppings. Classic cheese, pepperoni, and even a supreme with all the veggies. Strikes me as the kind to pick off the olives though. Basically if it's a universally enjoyed pizza, he'll eat it. Yes, even pineapple on pizza. Colette canonically doesn't like green peppers. From what I remember, they're basically a universally despised vegetable for younger palettes in Japan, the same way kids over here don't like broccoli. We know when she loses her sense of taste as part of the angel transformation that she is willing to eat them, so I think if someone was trying to be nice and just didn't know and served her a pizza with green peppers on it, she would suck it up and eat them. But I think if, say, the party ordered a supreme pizza, she'd be the kind to just quietly pick off the green peppers. I feel like she really likes just regular old cheese pizza best, though! Genis seems like he likes well made but simple pizza best. So a traditional Margherita pizza probably suits him best. Fresh ingredients prepared with care. He's one of the best chefs in the party, so I think he's more choosy about the restaurant and cook more than the pizza ingredients. Raine is a heathen and orders a different pizza every time, but I guarantee you that, since she loves lemons, she's probably a weirdo who eats lemon on pizza. To be fair, that sounds better than pineapple on pizza to me, but not by much. Raine absolutely is the person getting the weirdest thing on the menu no matter where it is, and I guarantee she asks for special and weird things like eggplant pizza, pineapple pizza, and barbecue chicken pizza. (To be fair, I have had the last one and it's pretty good.) Sheena seems like the kind of gal that likes a good veggie pizza. She'll settle for the supreme, but the meats get in the way of all the subtler flavors of the vegetables. Secretly dunks her crusts in ranch dressing. Zelos is the guy ordering the $10,000 pizza that comes with a diamond and truffle oil and "only the finest cheeses" and then he just... takes a photo with it, takes the diamond, and throws the pizza away without tasting it. I 100% see Zelos as the guy chatting up the idiot hotshots about the super expensive pizza but really he's just the kind of guy who enjoys the greasiest and cheapest slice he can get. Strikes me as a guy that unironically enjoys anchovy pizza. "I know it looks like cat puke, guys, but trust me! It just tastes like a regular cheese pizza amped up!" For once, I think I have 2 characters that would like the same unique order. Presea and Regal both strike me as the kind who enjoy garlic and white sauce pizza with fried egg and basil. Basically a Margherita pizza but with white sauce instead of tomato sauce. Also, if the restaurant gives out garlic butter, they are dunking/drizzling the full pizza in it. Regal also adds extra parmesan and red pepper flakes. Kratos has probably never had pizza in his life but if he were to have one: regular red sauce and cheese, pepperoni, olive, onion, and aaaaaaalll the garlic sauce. That and only that. If the party orders a supreme, he picks everything off except the pepperoni, olive, and onion.
Emil is down for the classic cheese and pepperoni, but I bet he loves a meat lover pizza. Especially if it comes with barbecue chicken. But, and this is a big but, from the right restaurant, Emil is a slut, and I mean SLUT for Thai chicken pizza. He will never tell anybody this, but if he finds a place that does it right, he will order it and eat the entire 10 inch pizza all by himself. Guaranteed. Marta probably picks half the veggies off a supreme pizza, but I can see her enjoying most toppings other than olive, mushroom, green pepper, and maybe onion. Also she is a ranch on pizza slut and is 300% that woman going to the pizza joint and asking, first thing, if they have ranch before she even orders. Richter I think has the broadest palate and also the strongest preferences. Cheese pizza? Never. Boring. Last choice. Only man brave enough to try what Raine orders. Loves basil, mushroom, fried egg, and garlic. Will absolutely pester the people behind the counter for chilis. "No I do not want red pepper flakes. I want those little green fuckers that come in a jar of vinegar and make children cry. As many as you have. Pepperoncini or whatever. Three at least." Will try any topping at least once. Standard order is probably the veggie pizza because it's easiest, but if this guy is ordering something custom, he's getting extra mushroom, extra sausage, "literally all the fresh basil you have, no I am not kidding, I will buy the entire stock I don't care how much extra that is" three cups of the garlic sauce, and "as many fried eggs as you can fit on the pizza." Also, catch this nerd buying his own red bell peppers and just eating them raw on the side like fucking apples. Will eat pineapple pizza without complaint but he also doesn't understand the hype. "It's just two discordant flavors. Nothing amazing but nothing offensive." Would probably also agree with Zelos that anchovies on pizza is tasty. "Just because it's a fish doesn't mean it tastes like one, guys." Oof, wait, almost forgot the others! Mithos is probably the basic bitch that just wants a good, greasy cheese pizza. Extra parmesan on top, half the sauce. Decus is also an anchovy on pizza guy but strangely Alice is too, I think. But Alice likes light anchovy, pearl onions (”They better be pearl onions or someone’s going to suffer!”), white sauce, and pepperoni “On the thinnest crust you plebs can manage.” Decus seems more of a anchovy, extra basil, garlic sauce kind of guy.

What’s your favorite Sanders Sides episode and why?? I would love to hear your thoughts! Feel free not to answer this btw 💕💕 (love your content, sorry if someone already asked this)
Are you kidding me, I would be very happy to answer! :D It's a great question, no one asked it yet and I would be more than happy to explain why I like those episodes in particular.
My decision is based on three factors: how enjoyable the episode is, how well it is made and how gladly I would watch it again, even on its own.
Having said that, please allow me to introduce my TOP 5 SANDERS SIDES EPISODES:
_________
5. ACCEPTING ANXIETY - part 1&2
That's a great season finale. All the Sides take part in the conversation, they all play a role, the conversation has a great flow.
And there are some of the most memorable jokes: Thomas' "I don't fear death", Patton being afraid of the spider curtains, all the Sides screaming at once, the dark strange son, the oatmeal raisin cookie, the Great Spider Threat of 2017 and so on.
But, as you can notice, this is also the reason why AA is only in fifth place: the best and most enjoyable part of this season finale is the second part. The first part is nice, sure, but a bit slower and way less enjoyable, if compared to the second part.
It's the same problem POF has: the second part is great, it has a great flow, there are plot twists and sweet sweet angst. But the first part doesn't have the same rhythm: it's slower, because it's mostly Patton monologuing about why he's right. There's no real confrontation, only a dreadful feeling that slowly grows, until the climax.
So yes, it's great to watch it as part of the series. But on its own? Eeeh, not so much.
_________
4. DEALING WITH INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS
This episode has the same problem AA-part 1&2 has, but it's a bit higher in my personal list because the problem is hidden better.
As Thomas himself said, this episode wasn't easy. He had a lot of explanations to do and Logan should've been the Side responsible for them all. I'm quite sure the crew had to do a lot of work, in order to give this episode a good flow and not turn it into a boring 40-minutes long infodump.
And if the final result is very good, it's only because of Remus. Remus kept the whole episode together and gave it the spark it needed, to counterbalance Logan's articulate explanations - all while introducing himself and making himself lovable/enjoyable for the public.
And he did it superbly. One episode was enough for the fandom to love him. One. Single. Episode. Not even Janus was so loved after one episode.
In conclusion: Remus is the best part of DWIT and Thomas & crew learned how to better “dilute” the heaviest part during the course of the entire episode. The result is enjoyable, funny and interesting, so it deserves the top five.
_________
3. MY NEGATIVE THINKING
This is officially my favourite episode from season one. It’s not a particularly intense episode, but it's very well made - especially thanks to the characters involved.
Speaking of the characters, Logan and Virgil are amazing. As always, Logan is the one who has to do all the explanations, but we don't see him being just a walking infodump here: he's adorable when he doesn't understand slang, he's sarcastic and he's savage (eh): let’s not forget that this was the episode where we got introduced to the iconic FALSEHOOD!
Virgil is also hilariously funny. He was still a little shit at the time and, in this episode, he's a little shit more than ever: he's anxious, he's blunt and harsh with Thomas, he's adorable too (especially in the last part, when he finds out Logan enjoyed discussing with him and you can literally see realization striking him: "oh wow, maybe these morons aren't so bad after all").
And their discussion has a great rhythm: explanations are balanced with the jokes, so the public never gets bored. Every part takes its time and the episode has a very nice flow: we move from a joke, to an explanation, to another joke, without confusing the viewers or annoying them.
And even though there were only two Sides involved, Logan and Virgil were so funny and their conversation so nice to follow, you don't feel like something is missing. On the contrary, when the episode ends, you just feel happy and satisfied.
_________
2. SELFISHNESS V. SELFLESSNESS
This is one of the best episodes of the whole series and I put it in second place only for two reasons I will explain when I'll talk about my no. 1 favourite.
This episode has everything and by "everything" I mean EVERYTHING.
All Sides (who have been introduced up to that episode) are involved. Sure, Janus and Patton are more involved than the others, but each Side has their moment to shine. Logan's part was a great reminder of how funny he is and, even though he was put in the back, he still had his moments during the whole courtroom scenario and after that.
Roman shone through the whole episode, with some amazing jokes that make me laugh every time. And, at the end, we even have a bit of that sweet sweet angst we are all craving.
Virgil... do I really need to talk about Virgil's part? How many theories were made? How we all collectively screamed out, when Deceit interrogated him? Virgil was here to deliver angst and mystery and we took it whole.
And Thomas... wow. The moment when he finally admitted the truth was so powerful, so *vibrant*. He really did a great job, especially considering the range of emotions he went through: from happiness, to faking obliviousness, to keep pretending he didn't remember about the wedding, to fear of being a bad guy, to hope, to surprise during Janus' interrogation, to admission of the truth. It was a wild ride for him and he was great.
But, as we all know, this is mostly a Deceit episode and this is the episode when we start to know him.
When he introduced himself, we actually got nothing from him. Who is this guy? Is he good? Is he evil? What does he want?
With SvS, we started to get some answers: this guy likes to be the villain, he knows stuff, he's clever and, hey, he has a point. He's not entirely wrong about this wedding vs callback thing. And oh, it looks like he actually does something for a reason: helping Thomas. He cares about Thomas, in his own way. And, with the pinata metaphor, he proved he's a mature guy as well.
Also let's not forget that he showed his logo, so he proved he is a Side, not a random villain. He is part of Thomas. And that was quite a big deal, because I remember that, at the time, some people were still double guessing if Deceit was a Side or not.
So not only this episode had all the other great points we already saw: nice flow, conversation on point, amazing rhythm, attention always high, but it also has the merit of:
doing it with all the Sides, not just two of them
adding angst and food for thoughts, so not only we enjoy the episode per se, but we keep thinking about it, guessing, theorizing and analyzing. As I said: I can write 200 posts about this episode and still keep finding new details to analyze.
_________
1. CAN LYING BE GOOD
When I thought about my favourite episode, I was torn between CLBG and SvS. They are both amazing episodes, they are both characterized by this great flow and nice rhythm, they both have all Sides involved, they're both very entertaining thanks to the fantastic jokes, they both offer food for thoughts and I definitely would love to watch them even as their own.
So, why did I choose Can Lying be Good as my favourite episode and not Selfishness vs Selflessness? Well, essentially for two reasons:
1. Not only this episode offers an amazing joke for every scene (Thomas' mother, "you're lazy AND you're gay?!", the "who broke this vase?" monologue, Sir Squiggles the Brave), not only there's a lot to analyze, not only the episode grabs our attention and keeps it until the end, but this episode has something no other episode has, something that makes us want to watch it over and over again.
As we all know, Deceit was disguised as Patton during the whole episode. And if the first time no one noticed it, after a couple of rewatches we started to notice the tiny details, the small differences, the microexpressions, the words.
Not only this makes it almost necessary to rewatch the episode, in order to better understand it, but it makes every rewatch more enjoyable than the one before. The rewatch turns into a funny quest, a treasure hunt where you can be surprised by a new detail you didn't notice before. And that detail can become part of a bigger theory, an analysis, a concept - or just a conversation with other friends who didn't notice it.
2. This episode brought a huge change in the series. Until that moment, there were only four Sides - and they were all the Sides the fandom knew about. Sure, Roman hinted at some "others" during AA, but nothing was confirmed, nor hints were dropped. As far as the public knew, Thomas and his four Sides were the only characters of the series.
This episode had a very difficult job to do, even more difficult than DWIT. It had to introduce a new Side, to an already well established cast. The last Side was introduced in the third episode and now, after almost 20 episodes, Thomas & crew had to introduce a whole new character.
They had a lot of goals to achieve: the new Side had to be funny, so the public would've enjoyed seeing him. He had to be interesting, in order to get the public's attention. And he had to be good enough, to prepare the public for the other two characters that would've come after him. This introductory episode had to be good, for the sake of what would've come next.
And, oh boy, the episode is great. Janus' introduction is the best plot twist of the show: he appeared as this evil, mysterious villain who popped up for whatever reason and oh wow, he seems evil but he's also a dork, oh no, mixed emotions! I don't think there wasn't a viewer who wasn't intrigued by this twist and wanted to know more - about the series, about this guy, about everything. The show succeeded in keeping the attention high - and even attracted new viewers. I know, because I was one of them.
Sooo yes, there might be a tiny emotional component in my reasoning too. I would've never known this show, if the wonderful people of this fandom didn't leak into the Gravity Falls one and get my attention. If I'm here, it's basically thanks to Janus' introduction - and I am very happy that my introduction to this series was the best episode so far.
_________
HONORABLE MENTION: 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
I didn't put this episode into this list, because this is a whole different level. While the other episodes have this wonderful mix of entertainment and food for thoughts, this episode is just pure entertainment. If I want to turn off my brain for a while and just relax, I watch this episode.
12 Days of Christmas has basically nothing plot-related: it's just the Sides goofing around and being idiots and I love EVERY SECOND OF IT.
Roman being increasingly exasperated by Virgil, Virgil being the sarcastic emo he is, Patton changing the lines, Logan rapping: all the Sides are great, every line cracks me up. I can watch this episode until the end of time and I would still laugh at every joke as if it's the first time.
So, well, I wanted to give it a special place, for being such a lighthearted funny episode.
