Scarred By Time
Author’s Note: I'm procrastinating writing something else so I ended up picking this up once more. Another chapter will hopefully appear at some point. Hope you enjoy. Part One can be found here.                                ********************************************* Part Two The building sitting at the edge of the city loomed above them as they walked towards it from the parking lot.
Everyone had heard of TM Consultancy these days. It was a think tank which had a reputation for creative brilliant solutions to problems most people would dismiss as unsolvable. They had appeared from nowhere about two years ago and quickly built their reputation.
Sara Lance looked at the three people standing with her at the entrance, Ray Palmer, Nate Heywood and Zari Tomaz, three people who didn’t normally work together. She knew them through some mutual friends and the bar she hung out at some weekends.
“What do a scientist, a historian, a hacker and a martial arts instructor have in common?” Sara asked thoughtfully.
Ray grinned at her, “I think we’re about to find out.”
Sara watched the main doors open before them. Swapping confused glances, they walked in and looked around the spacious comfortable almost empty reception area.
“Good morning,” the woman who stood waiting for them said as they moved closer, she had long chestnut brown hair with storm-grey eyes. Her face had a pleasant but neutral expression while she held a tablet in her hand, “Miss Lance, Dr Palmer, Mr Heywood and Miss Tomaz, it is a pleasure to meet you. Dr Hunter is waiting for you. Please follow me.”
They stared when she turned and walked through the wall behind her. Looking at one another again, they shrugged and followed the woman. All cried out in surprise and pain when they walked into a solid barrier.
“Gideon,” a man’s annoyed voice came making them turn to see Rip Hunter, owner of TM Consultancy standing inside an elevator. He was tall, with sandy hair, neatly trimmed beard, intense green eyes and was dressed head to toe in black, the only part of his body uncovered was his face despite the fact it was the middle of summer but the thing that especially caught Sara’s attention were the leather gloves he wore.
The woman reappeared asking innocently, “Yes?”
“Stop it,” he stated before turning to them, “My apologies, she has currently developed a rather childish sense of humour since her recent upgrade.”
Sara could see the others as bemused as she was, “What?”
“Gideon is the AI who runs the building,” Hunter explained, obviously trying not to laugh as Gideon crossed her eyes and stuck her tongue out at him before disappearing back through the wall once more, “Follow me and we can discuss why I’ve asked you here.”
“Thank you for coming,” Hunter said as they filed into an office decorated in neutral colours with a long dark wooden desk in the middle and the sun shining through the wall of windows, “I’m sure you’re all busy so I’m not going to waste too much of your time. The reason I asked you here is to offer you a job.”
“What?” Sara spoke up.
He gave a slight smile, “All four of you have very specific skills which would be useful in order for us to expand our business.”
“What work exactly?” Ray asked thoughtfully.
“We find solutions for problems that others can’t,” Hunter replied, “Each of you have the skills I am looking for to expand the team.”
Sara frowned before challenging, “Considering my skills, what job do you expect me to do?”
“You’re a leader, Miss Lance,” he said, “I want you to manage this team.”
“What wages and perks are you offering?” Zari asked, “Because we all currently have pretty good jobs.”
Hunter smiled slightly again, Sara wondered if he knew how to smile properly, before he told them, “Gideon has emailed you a copy of your contract as well as details of all monetary compensation.”
“And you can’t give us any specific details of what we’ll actually be doing?” Nate demanded.
Hunter mused for a moment before nodding, “I’ll send you some write-ups of our previous cases, but there is information that you will not be privy to unless you are working for us. I will say that your days won’t ever be able to be called boring.”
With that the meeting was over.
Rip stood in his office watching from the window the people, he had hopefully just hired, leave the property to consider his offer, stunned that he’d made it to this stage. ‘Time’ had confirmed that all those that were needed would be in the right place when required and Rip had been concerned that something would go wrong. It had been a long five years, three of which he’d spent alone and two more building up a business so that he had a way to bring the team together.
“I still do not believe that hiring them is a good idea,” Gideon’s voice made him turn to find her standing at his side.
“We need Sara to recant her wish now John and Mick have managed to capture the Djinn,” Rip reminded her, “But in order for her to do that then she must know about the fact she made it. If she’s working here, then we can ease her into the information. The other three will help with finding the information to convince her it’s real and not some kind of joke.”
Gideon rested her hand on his shoulder, the sensors in his clothes letting him feel her touch, “Then we need to get back to work.”
“Yes, we do.”
“Although,” Gideon noted, “You have not yet eaten this morning.”
Rip rolled his eyes, “I will get something just now.”
Gideon nodded, “Excellent. I will have something waiting for you in the dining room. I’ll meet you there.”
With that she disappeared, and Rip looked out the window once more at the four people walking away.
Part of him hoped this worked but he also knew if it did, then he would leave Gideon again.
And he hated that thought.
                                 *********************************************
Gideon had been watching her Captain carefully over the past few weeks since he’d made the decision to contact the Legends in this version of the world. John had managed to track down the Djinn who had tricked Sara into making the wish that created this reality, trap it and it was currently being stored in the Waverider under several layers of security both technological and magical.
Although she knew that this was what Rip had been working towards for many years, she feared him succeeding because Gideon would lose him once more.
She never used her hologram and turned her cameras off whenever he was in the shower or changing because Gideon knew Rip hated anyone, even her, seeing the scars that covered every part of his body.
The reminder that to give the Legends time to defeat Mallus after they had blundered in without a proper plan, he had been ripped apart by the energy from the time core.
“Gideon,” he called, letting her know he was dressed.
Turning her camera and hologram back on, Gideon smiled to find him dressed and heading out the room.
“Yes?” she asked as she followed him to the elevator.
“Have we received a reply from anyone yet?” he waited as Gideon sent the elevator down to the sixth floor so he could have breakfast.
Gideon shook her head, “I’m afraid not, Rip. However, it has only been a few days and the remuneration package you are providing may be giving them pause.”
“Should I have offered more?” Rip frowned concerned.
“From what Mr Constantine has said,” Gideon noted as they walked the corridor to the dining room, “You may have offered them too much.”
Rip rolled his eyes, “Money has never been something that has meant much to me, not since I was a child, and I stole whatever I could get my hands on. The Waverider always provided what I required. I probably should have had Mr Rory work out those details.”
“His economic knowledge is quite surprising,” Gideon noted.
Gideon gently touched his hand and Rip took a hold of it. She was relieved he had agreed to let her put the sensors in his clothing, Rip needed physical contact of some kind and would never accept it from Mr Constantine or Mr Rory.
Gideon knew from when Rip and Miranda had been together how much just a simple touch of his hand or kiss on his cheek from his wife, comforted and made him smile.
Rip turned to her and rested his other hand on her cheek, “I’m fine, Gideon.”
“I’m not,” she whispered, leaning into his touch, “Because the closer we get to fixing the mess Miss Lance made with her wish, the day I lose you again draws ever nearer.”
Sighing, Rip shook his head, “I’ve been dead a long time, Gideon. It’s just going to take this time.”
“Captain…”
“I’m at peace with my decision,” Rip told her, “I only wish it didn’t mean leaving you once more.”
Gideon closed her eyes and turned her face to press a soft kiss to his palm, “We have time before that moment comes, Rip and I will treasure each moment.”
“Have you found anything, Mr Constantine?”
Swearing John jumped, “Make a noise, Gideon before you appear.”
“I am constantly monitoring all parts of this facility,” Gideon noted with a roll of her eyes, “I am always here.”
Shaking his head and muttering under his breath, John pulled over the book so she could see it properly.
“I think I can summon the corporeal version of ‘Time’,” John told her, “But what do we do then? We can’t threaten him to keep Rip alive after we’ve fixed things.”
“I am aware of this, Mr Constantine,” Gideon replied sharply, “However, I will not allow Rip to die again without trying something to save him. This way we have a chance to find out what we can do.”
John shook his head, “I know, Gideon. Look,” he closed the book, “I need to collect some stuff to do the summoning so I will start gathering them up. And we can work on what we offer.”
She nodded, “Thank you.”
“He’s my friend too,” John reminded her, “And I won’t let him go without a fight.”
Gideon gave him a soft smile before she tilted her head, “The Legends have replied to the job offers. I will leave you to work while I report this to Captain Hunter.”
As Gideon disappeared again, John mused over everything. It was only a few hours after he’d been resuscitated into this world that Gideon asked him to find a way to help her save Rip after he saved the world.
He knew Rip and Gideon were close, but the past few years a lot of the time John could see how close they truly were. Gideon had implanted every piece of clothing Rip wore with sensors allowing her to physically interact with him. John had been a bit weirded out by it at first but realised after a while that it was good for Rip.
John smiled slightly, thinking back to anytime he saw Rip and Miranda together. How she would always place a hand on his arm, or lean into him to look at something, she’d brush a kiss to his cheek whenever she left the room or would simply sit on Rip’s lap without even acknowledging him.
It always made Rip smile and relax, Gideon knew this too so, as always, was looking out for her Captain.
                                 *********************************************
Sara stood with her arms folded as she stood just outside the TM Consultancy building.
“You know,” Zari said as she walked up to Sara’s side, “We only get paid if we go inside and work.”
Shrugging Sara asked, “Don’t you think this is a little odd?”
“A little,” Zari agreed, “I nearly passed out when I saw the salary we were being offered. Not to mention the bonuses for completed jobs.”
Sara nodded, “I know what you mean. It…” she hesitated, trying to find the words, “The job is amazing and so much better than the one I was doing but there is just something odd about it and Hunter.”
“His dress sense screams that,” Zari laughed, “Do you think he knows the all black outfit makes him look like a stick-insect?”
Sara chuckled, “It’s the fact every part of him was covered other than his face I found odd.”
Zari shrugged, “Maybe he just doesn’t like the cold.”
“We’re in the middle of summer,” Sara sighed, “Never mind. We’re due in ten minutes and I don’t want to be late on my first day.”
They started towards the gates and Sara mused over everything. There was something strange about this entire thing and she intended to find out what reason this guy had for hiring them. The money he offered them all was incredible, far more than she expected ever to earn with her qualifications.
Reaching the reception, they found Ray and Nate were already there, sitting on the plush couch just to one side of the desk.
“We were told to wait,” Nate told her, “I don’t think the computer likes us much.”
Sara and Zari took a seat as Zari asked, “Why?”
“Just the look she gave me,” Nate replied.
Ray shook his head, “You’re imagining things. She was very pleasant, and this time didn’t make us run into a wall.”
Zari chuckled, “Come on, that was a little funny. And the fact she’s an AI with a sense of humour, this job won’t be boring.”
“Boring is something I’m not expecting,” Sara mused.
“Are you ready for this, Captain?” Gideon asked softly as he stood in his office watching the video screen showing the four people waiting in reception.
Rip shook his head, “Honestly, no.”
Placing her hand on his back, Gideon whispered, “You don’t have to do this.”
Turning Rip took her hand, “I do. This world isn’t real. It is missing those who will step in and save it from dangers that normal people cannot.”
“Why is there no other way?” Gideon asked.
Sliding his arms around her, Rip drew her in for a hug, “Because there isn’t. Sara recants her wish, the world goes back to how it was…”
“And I lose you again,” Gideon sighed, her head resting against his shoulder, “Only this time it will be forever.”
Rip closed his eyes before he reminded her, “I made my choice, Gideon. I never wanted to leave you and I don’t but…”
“But?” she pulled back and looked at him with large eyes.
He let out a slow breath, “I can’t be selfish, Gideon as much as I want to. The world is wrong, and I made a deal to fix it. I made a promise.”
“You are far too honourable sometimes, Captain.”
Rip sighed, “You are probably the only one who has ever thought that.” He gave her a smile and rested his hand on her shoulder, “Let’s go meet our new employees.”
“I hope you ensure to remind them that I don’t take orders from them,” Gideon told him, turning on her heel towards the elevator.
Rip smiled and followed her.
The ding of the elevator made Sara jump to her feet along with the other three.
“Good morning,” Hunter greeted them, wearing basically the same outfit as he had been on the day he’d ‘interviewed’ them, except his polo neck was blue not black, “I’m glad you all decided to take up my offer.”
“Well,” Sara spoke for the group, “It was a hard offer to say no to.”
He gave a slight smile and handed Gideon who was waiting at his side the tablet he had been holding. Sara stared, feeling the others stunned looks as well, when the AI took it.
“How did you do that?” Ray demanded.
Hunter glanced at Gideon before replying, “Executive level clearance.” He turned and headed to the elevator frowning as he turned back to find them staring at him, “Please join me and we can start the tour.”
Sara took the lead and walked into the elevator with the other three joining after a moment.
“Before I show you your offices,” Hunter said as the doors closed, “I want to confirm to you the areas that are off-limits no matter what. These are the top two floors which house the apartments used by myself, Mr Rory and Mr Constantine. None of us will be happy if you wander into our private rooms. Secondly is the basement.”
“Keeping the bodies down there?” Zari asked with a chuckle.
Hunter gave her one of his slight smiles before replying, “Just filled with so much junk it’s dangerous and I don’t want any of you to get lost down there, it could take days to find you.”
                                 *********************************************
John went through his checklist for the summoning spell. It had taken him a month to get everything together with Gideon constantly checking on him.
He had avoided the Legends since Rip had brought them in, it was just weird that they didn’t know him, and he knew Mick was also avoiding being around them. The former thief and Bounty Hunter had taken to working in a Think Tank, amazingly becoming their security expert with enthusiasm. When they’d joined Rip and started creating the business, Gideon had gone about reorganising the building so that it worked both for their business but also for a place for the three of them to live.
“Please tell me you’re ready, Mr Constantine,” Gideon’s exasperated voice preceded her hologram appearing.
John smiled to himself at her irritation, “I take it one of our new recruits has annoyed you.”
“Mr Heywood insists on calling me ‘computer’,” she snapped, “Honestly it is only due my promise to Captain Hunter that I have not retaliated.”
“Sorry, Gideon,” he sighed, “I’ll talk to him. Because the last thing we need is Rip to deck him for disrespecting you.”
A sweet smile touched her lips and John, not for the first time since he’d been woken in this new world, realised how little he’d understood just how self-aware and ‘human’ Gideon was.
“Before that though,” John pulled out the spell book, “Lock the door and we can try the spell.”
Gideon nodded and John heard the click of the lock as he pulled out everything he required for the summoning.
“Okay,” he took a breath, “Are we ready?”
“Whenever you are.”
John started the summoning spell, feeling the enormous power he was bringing into the room but it wasn’t the first time he’d interacted with something powerful and held his nerve.
Finally a man stood in front of him, or it looked like the shape of a man but John couldn’t quite see the features or anything other than a slightly grey shape.
“Not many people are brave, or powerful enough, to summon me,” the voice echoed off every corner of the room meaning John was in no doubt this was ‘Time’, “Why have you done this?”
“Rip Hunter,” John said, “I want to know what is needed so that he will survive once he gets the wish recanted.”
‘Time’ tilted its head, “Rip Hunter is dead. I was only able to return him to life because of the wish. He knows this.”
“He does,” John replied, “But he deserves something more than to die again once he fixes things for you.”
“He does,” ‘Time’ agreed, “But I could only give him life in exchange for another.”
“Then take mine,” Gideon spoke suddenly.
John spun to her, “What? No?”
“You are an AI,” ‘Time’ mused, “Offering your basic immortal life for a human?”
“For him,” Gideon replied, “Yes.”
‘Time’ moved to her, “Do you understand what you are offering?”
“I do,” Gideon nodded, “And I want to ensure if I do this then he is completely whole once more.”
“Gideon,” John snapped, “Rip would never agree…”
“Your offer is accepted,” ‘Time’ interrupted John.
John frowned, “No, wait.”
“The offer was made without guile,” ‘Time’ told him, “Without deceit. It was given freely and has been accepted.”
With that said ‘Time’ disappeared.
John spun to Gideon, “Rip will never agree to this.”
“He does not need to know until after Miss Lance has recanted her wish,” Gideon told him.
“And you think I’m not going to tell him?”
Gideon nodded, “I know you will not.”
Bright light filled the room and John blinked.
Looking around he frowned, before checking the book, “It didn’t work, did it?”
“No, Mr Constantine,” Gideon replied, “What you intended did not happen.”
Sighing John said, “I’m sorry, Gideon. I know how disappointed you must be. I can try again.”
Gideon gave him a sad smile, “It took you almost two years to track down that spell. It is doubtful you will be able to find another in time.”
John sighed as Gideon disappeared and he began to tidy up, disappointed that he’d failed.

Video calls in quarentine
Plot: The worst thing about not being able to leave the house was boredom and not seeing his friends or Law. Luckily there are video calls and until the quarantine ends, Luffy would talk to them through the camera.

Video calls in quarentine
Luffy opened the bowl of ramen as he sat at the desk in front of the computer. Ace hadn't felt like cooking that night and ordered delivery at Sanji’s restaurant, which was one of the few things that was still working. Also, they didn't have much food in the house anymore. The next day Sabo would go out with the car to buy food at the market that could last them for the whole next week.
His room was a mess. Ace forced him to clean every day, but he just swept up and let Sabo disinfect. His clothes and things were thrown everywhere, but he didn't care much. He crossed his legs over the chair and looked at the computer anxiously. He wanted it to be time for everyone to get online. He was terribly bored and fed up with being locked in his house without being able to leave, and talking to them was one of the few fun things he could still do. That if the internet didn't collapse with everyone using it at the same time.
"Luffy, are you eating already?" Ace asked, peering into his room.
"Yes, I just grabbed the ramen," he replied, turning his face to see him. He brought a mouthful of noodles to his mouth. "I added the meat you had made today at noon to make it better"
Ace laughed because he knew of his little brother's quirky taste for meat.
"We’re going to talk to Marco, Thatch, Koala and Hack by video call in the living room," he informed him, saying goodbye.
"Okay, I'm going to talk to the guys, too."
The ringing of the video call application turned his attention to the computer and he saw that Franky had started the chat. He accepted the invitation and eight boxes appeared on his screen. The faces of his friends appeared one by one.
"Hello guys!" Luffy yelled happily. He waved his hand effusively to greet them.
"Luffy!" Chopper appeared in one of the upper boxes and Luffy watched him. "How's everybody?"
"Eating,"  he laughed, showing him his bowl of ramen.
"Ace didn't cook today?" Sanji interjected, under Chopper.
"We don't have much food left, tomorrow Sabo is going to buy. I hope he brings a lot of meat"
"He doesn’t need to go outside, Luffy," said Nami, next to Chopper. "He can buy online and have it delivered to the house"
"I didn't know that," Chopper replied in amazement. "However here at home they go out every day, so they buy outside"
"Do your parents have a lot of work, Chopper?" Robin asked, sitting next to Franky in their living room. Their camera appeared below Sanji.
"Yes, they are both in the emergency department at the hospital, so they attended many suspicious cases that ended up negative, and several that were confirmed"
Chopper's parents were a pair of doctors, Kureha and Hiluluk. Chopper was a student, but he still didn't work or practice in hospitals, so he had to stay home during quarantine.
"What about you?" Nami asked Franky and Robin. "Classes were suspended, do you have to go to college, Robin?"
"I went the first week just because the teachers had to go, but since the mandatory quarantine was decreted we also stayed at home. And Franky opens the workshop less hours"
Franky's workshop was installed next to their house and he didn't have to go out to work. In addition, hardware stores and workshops were exempt from quarantine because citizens may need home repairs.
"At least there are some things to do," Franky said." Otherwise it would be suuuper boring"
Luffy laughed as he shoved a large bite of noodles and meat into his mouth. Knowing that he wasn't the only one who was bored to death during those days made him feel very accompanied.
"What about you, Sanji?" Robin asked. "The other day I passed near the restaurant when I was returning from shopping and I saw it closed, how are you doing?"
Sanji was sitting in a chair by the open window of his room, smoking. He looked at the computer, which appeared to be leaning against his bed since the camera focused him from beneath.
"Zeff decided to close the shop to eat there, but the delivery is still open" he answered taking a drag on the cigarette.
"Today we ordered the ramen there, it’s delicious!" Luffy added, his eyes bright with excitement.
"I didn't work today, who brought you the food?"
"Paty came, it looked like they had a lot of work," Luffy replied.
"With the quarantine, people in the neighborhood are asking for more food there whenever they don't want to cook. We are cooking a lot even though we closed the restaurant"
The box next to Sanji was black and suddenly Zoro appeared.
"Finally!" Usopp shouted when he saw him appear. "Why did you take so long? Don't tell me you got lost ..."
Everyone laughed at the absurd joke and Zoro shouted some things at him that no one heard. The video call was more chaotic than their meetings, although they were naturally messy already.
"I was sleeping," he said to apologize.
"How strange of you, sleeping," Sanji murmured to annoy him.
"What are you saying, perverted cook ?!" He yelled annoyed.
"Brook didn't show up yet, either," Chopper added. His box, next to Robin’s and Franky's, underneath it all, was still black.
"I'm sure he's sleeping, surely he's going to show up anytime soon," Robin replied, smiling.
"Hey, Zoro!" Luffy called out to him. "How’s everything over there? Did you close the dojo?"
Zoro's father, Mihawk, was a well-known martial artist from the area and had a kendo dojo in which Zoro gave some classes and trained. They lived in the house behind the dojo, in an area far from the city, surrounded by some valleys.
Zoro said he used to get lost when everyone got together because he lived further away than the others. Sanji believed it was because he had a lousy sense of direction. And that always led to absurd and fun fights.
"It's closed, but we train every day," Zoro commented, settling into bed with the computer on his legs. "Although it's boring not being able to get out of here"
"I get you," Luffy gasped with a weary expression. "I'm sick of being locked up at home! I go out to the yard and I have nothing to do. Sabo won't even let me go do the groceries!
"He knows you're going to run away if you go out," Usopp said, and Nami nodded.
"It's just for a few days Luffy, we don't want you to get sick!" She exclaimed to reaffirm the point.
"I know, but it's sooo boring!" Luffy dropped his head on the desk table and his friends laughed, understanding his sentiment, because they were all mortally bored from being locked up. "If the virus doesn't kill me, boredom will"
"I go out to the yard every day to practice my marksmanship, at least I have my equipment at home," Usopp said. "I brought it from the club before quarantine"
He practiced shooting and arrow and various other aiming sports, but he was lucky because in Usopp's house there was a big yard where he could spend the day if he was tired of being indoors.
"At home we don't know what else to do," Nami said, rolling her eyes. "Being locked up in an apartment is much worse. Yesterday we walked the dog with Nojiko and took a few more laps"
"See! I'm not the only one!" Luffy yelled at the screen.
"Nami, don't do that please!" Chopper interjected. "It is better to take him out to pee and nothing else, even if you want to walk a little. It is dangerous to expose yourself"
"I know, I'm sorry… today we purchased some clothes online! They will send them home, so at least that was fun.
Underneath them all, Brook's black box formed into an image. The man was lying on the couch at home drinking tea and the computer seemed to be on his legs.
"Hello Brook!" Usopp greeted him, waving his hand effusively.
Brook saluted even though he wasn't looking at the camera.
"On the top of the notebook, Brook!" He indicated, laughing. Usopp gave him some classes to use the computer a few years ago and now he knew much better how it worked but he had never made video calls with it yet.
"Oh, there you are," said the older man, and he started laughing when he saw them all. "How are you guys?"
"Hello, Brook," Robin said with her kind smile. "We are fine, you?"
"Suuuuper bored over here," Franky added.
"I am grand," Brook replied, drinking his tea. "I am an average retiree, this was already my lifestyle"
Everyone laughed at his joke and Luffy saw behind Brook his guitar.
"Have you been practicing with the guitar?" He asked excitedly.
"Today I wanted to play something for you guys, if you let me."
"Yes!" Luffy yelled excitedly.
Brook was the older of the group, and therefore the most vulnerable to the disease, so he was confined to his home. Usopp lived close enough and did the groceries for him. He couldn't stay long, so he left the food at the door, greeted each other and left.
"By the way, thank you for today’s groceries, Usopp-san," he said with a smile and picked up his guitar.
The man might be old, but he was rocking like no other. In his youth he had been part of a band that became fairly well known. Franky had been a huge fan in his teens and had the entire Roringustonzu discography. Sabo also liked them so Luffy knew some songs, but Brook had done others that no one else knew.
He played the song everyone liked best, Bink’s Sake, an ode to the adventures they had created after a movie night at Franky’s and Robin's. They had seen Pirates of the Caribbean and fantasized about being pirates until the wee hours. Their version ended up being much better than the movie.
Everyone applauded when he finished playing. They had sung in chorus, which with the delay came late to all the computers and made a mess of sound that made the moment even more delirious and fun. Brook bowed and laughed with them.
"Hey, Brook!" Sanji called out as he smoked. "How’s Laboom?"
Brook got up from his seat and took the computer to the fish tank in a corner of the house, where the little goldfish he had had for years danced to the tune he had just finished.
"Here he is, his food comes by online delivery, so he is kept fed," he replied.
Luffy greeted Laboom as if the fish could hear or recognize him, but everyone else did too.
"What about your dog, Luffy?" Chopper asked, poking his nose very close to the screen.
"Get a little further from the computer, Chopper," Zoro warned him. The boy pushed away the computer.
"Sorry, my books had fallen and I was arranging them."
Luffy lifted his pet off the ground and brought it closer to the screen.
"Say hello, Shushu." The dog barked at the camera and everyone interpreted it as a greeting. "I think he is the only one who has a good time because nobody leaves the house"
"Same thing happens to me," Nami said with a smile.
The noise of a door was heard but they could not identify which camera it came from, until Perona appeared in Zoro's camera, behind everything, peeking out of the frame of the room.
"Food’s ready!" She yelled in her bossy tone. Sanji straightened up and began to greet her effusively.
"Hello, Perona-chan!" He shouted with bright eyes and Zoro glanced at him with a murderous face. "Do you want me to send you free food from the restaurant?"
Nami covered her face with shame. Luckily Sanji had understood, at least, that he couldn't flirt with her and Robin, because they were his friends, but that didn't stop him from going after Zoro's sister.
"That would be great!" Perona cried contentedly in her high-pitched voice, and Zoro shoved her out of her room.
"I'll go, now get out," he snapped annoyed.
Luffy laughed because the antics of his two friends always made him laugh. In the corner of his computer, a WhatsApp Web sign popped out. It was a message from Law.
[3/28 8:46 p. m.] Torao: Hello Luffy-ya
are you free?
"Torao wrote to me!" Luffy shouted happily with the cell phone in his hand and showed them to his friends.
"Send him greetings!" Nami shouted.
"Tell him to call me later," Chopper added. "I have a bunch of things to ask him"
Law was Chopper's tutor at the university, but when classes were suspended, so were face-to-face meetings with tutors and study sessions in the library. Everything had turned towards virtual meetings. However, in a complicated pandemic situation like this, and Law as a doctor, he had a lot of work in the hospital and could not pay as much attention to his little student.
"Okay, I think he wants to make a video call with me."
"Don't let things get too heated, Luffy!" Nami raised her eyebrows and started laughing out loud. Robin covered her mouth, giggling.
"Be careful, you live with your brothers!" Franky said very seriously.
Luffy felt his face going red because of his friends’ teasing, but he looked at the cell phone hoping that Law would write to him again. He had told him that he was there and that if he wanted to talk, his computer was on.
Instead of an answer, a video call notification came through.
"He’s calling me!" He announced happily. "Okay, guys, we’ll chat later, okay?"
His friends greeted him and said goodbye to him. Luffy closed that session and opened Law's video call. The screen showed the doctor in a huge box. He was in his apartment, surely he had just returned from work, although due to his clothes, he had already changed.
"Torao!" Luffy yelled happily. They hadn't seen each other in person in weeks. Law worked a lot in the hospital and even before the quarantine began he didn't want Luffy to see him in case he could infect him.
"How are you Luffy-ya?" He asked with a smile. That kind of sideways, very soft smile that Law only gave when he was relaxed and calm.
"Fine, bored, but I just talked to the guys and it was fun seeing them," he replied with a smile. "How about you? Have you just arrived from work?"
"Yes, I showered and left the clothes on the balcony with disinfectant. Today was a long day at the hospital."
"Why? Many new cases?" He asked curiously. "I hope you are taking care of yourself!"
Law laughed and the sound of his deep voice was refreshing. There were days when he was so stuffed with work that they couldn't even call each other. Luffy missed him very much.
“We confirmed five cases at North Blue"
Luffy saw him move around the house, it seemed that he had called him from his cell phone. Law sat at the kitchen counter and began to drink coffee.
"Shachi took care of two and I saw only one," he continued informing him. All of Law's friends were from the hospital, so he got to see them often.
Luffy envied that, at least a little.
"The ones we took care of are young and have no previous illnesses, so they will be fine. I investigated the other two cases and they are more complicated, but my prognosis is not bad. They were taken to Dressrosa’s hospital, which was built for patients with the virus specifically."
Luffy liked to hear Law speak, even though he didn't understand half the things he was saying. He knew that Law was a fairly prestigious doctor and that he was running for the position of North Blue’s director . Luffy wasn't sure if he wanted Law to have such an important position, because it would mean even less time than what he already had, but it would also get him out of that front line in which he was so exposed to the virus at the moment.
But he knew that, in the end, Law would do whatever he wanted and considered best. Luffy would do the same in his position.
"Do you wear the facial mask and the gloves?"
"We always wear them, Luffy-ya."
He laughed at his answer, because it was true. However, he was surprised to see his face so red around the eyes and with some injuries and irritated areas.
"Why are you so hurt?" He asked with a frown. He focused his eyes better.
Law touched his face and looked into his camera.
"Because of the use of the equipment," he replied, massaging his face. "The masks are tight and cover the entire face. In addition we have the face masks and the whole suit. Using them so much irritates the skin"
Luffy clicked his tongue, because he didn't like seeing him hurt, but he understood that it was needed to take care of himself too.
"Does it hurt much?"
Law shook his head and took a sip of his coffee.
"No, it just burns a little. I'll put on some moisturizer later. Don't worry, it's nothing"
He had seen Law many times when he was working, before the pandemic. Luffy liked to pick him up at the hospital and go eat somewhere. Sometimes he passed Law's friends and greeted each other. Luffy liked them very much.
He missed that.
"Don't be sad," he heard him say. He raised his head to see the screen. Law was really good at reading him, mainly because he knew him very well. Just as Luffy had managed to break him apart and know all of his reactions. "I am not the most optimistic of all, you know that, but I am confident that we will get out of this situation. The isolation is temporary, remember it"
Luffy complained as always, jaded just like a whimsical child.
"I'm very tired of being home", he groaned. " I wanna see my friends, go play soccer, see you. It's not fair"
Law looked at him with a warmer smile. It wasn't a common sight, but Luffy liked when he got to see it, though it usually meant that he was sad and Law did it to cheer him up.
"No, it isn't," he agreed. "It isn't, especially, for those who get sick or for those who cannot see their loved ones who are sick"
Law always helped him get everything in perspective. If he thought it that way, Law was right. He didn't know what he would do if any of his friends, brothers or Law became ill.
"I know, you're right, but Sabo won't even let me go get the groceries!" He protested.
"He knows you would go too far if he let you out," he replied, laughing.
"Why can't I stay with you during the quarantine?" He said with a whimsical pout.
"Because I work and I already put myself at risk, I don't want to risk you too."
He knew it. It made sense. But it was difficult to stay still locked up in his house when his nature was so free and adventurous.
"I miss you too, Luffy-ya," he said quietly, looking directly at him on camera. "I don't work early tomorrow so we can talk till late. Want to see a movie?"
He felt like a child when Law spoke to him like that, but he also liked him thinking of things to do with him.
"Okay, we can use Netflix Party," Luffy added. "It’s the extension that I told you about the other day, to watch Netflix at the same time. We used it with the guys the other day to watch the last movie of Pirates of the Caribbean."
"Okay, I’ll install it, what do you want to watch?""
"Not Grey's Anatomy, please," Luffy asked, rolling his eyes. "I don’t understand anything..."
"Okay, not series. A movie? An anime?"
Luffy went through the Netflix catalog looking at what they could see. Action movies, some interesting series, and anime.
"Zoro recommended Kingdom, the South Korean series. Usopp is watching Dr. Stone, maybe you like that, he's a scientist like you, Torao!"
Law laughed from the other side of the camera and put on the headphones to hear Luffy better.
"We can also see Kimetsu no Yaiba…"
"Shachi told me it's not that good," Law said.
Luffy looked back at the camera and saw his boyfriend on the couch with headphones and a blanket. He really wanted to be there, in that same tiny space. Cuddling.
"Kingdom sounds fine to me, but it's a series, doesn't bother you?" " Law asked.
Luffy wasn’t a series lover because he didn't have much perseverance to watch them. If he got bored in a chapter, he generally didn't watch more or forgot to follow it. But Zoro told him that ‘Kingdom’ had a lot of action and that he would surely like it.
"We’ll give it a try and see if we like it."
"Okay," Law replied. "I already have the extension, so we can see it whenever you want."
Luffy looked in his closet for a snack bag that he kept there for these moments and moved to bed with the computer.
"You look good like that, Torao," he praised him with an insinuating smile and Law felt a little nervous.
He wasn't used to Luffy's advances on him, no matter how much he always did it. He coughed and settled into the couch.
"If you go stray, we're not going to watch the series ..." he warned when his voice returned.
Luffy laughed as if he had made a prank. He opened the app and the series to play at the same time and put on the headphones.
"What's wrong with it?" He asked innocently. "You said we could stay up late."
Law put play before Luffy made him feel more embarrassed and started the series.
That night they went to bed at three in the morning. It was customary for Luffy to fall asleep late and more in quarantine when he had nothing to do. He made Law promise that they would speak the next day when he returned. Now that he couldn't see him, like his friends, he wanted to make a video call even more often with him.
When the pandemic passes, Luffy will take care of filling his schedule visiting all his friends, playing soccer and sleeping a lot with Torao on his couch; where they were tight and uncomfortable, but very close. So that it never occurs to any fucking virus to want to separate them.

Would you ever try Fear Factor for one million dollars? Why or why not? Yes. It would make for hilarious stories for get-togethers and I think that winning a million dollars that I could use up for the rest of my life doing some dumb dares for a few hours would be worth it. If you have a camera, when do you use flash? Only if it’s dim. I don’t like the effect that flash gives. What would you do with eighty-three crazy straws? Find an aunt or uncle with a kid who’s having a birthday party soon so they can use the straws as giveaways or something. If you use hair spray, what brand do you use the most? I don’t.  Is Catcher in the Rye in your library by any chance? It’s probably in another college’s library, most likely our college for the arts and letters. There’s no reason for it to be in a mass communication library.
What if there was no such thing as the word 'one'? Then that would imply that we have/have to have plurals of everything, which just sounds a bit bizarre to me.
What do you have automatic sympathy for? The 11,000 employees of the country’s biggest broadcasting network that was recently officially shut down by our – surprise surprise – government. These are people who weren’t even involved in the network’s franchise renewal status (which was/is the main issue), people who have families, people who relied on these jobs to get by during a worldwide pandemic, people who loved their jobs, people who found family in these jobs, It’s absolutely crazy how people can defend their stance against the network and justify the loss of 11,000 jobs. What is a cool disposable object? I don’t know who looks at disposable objects and thinks they’re ‘cool,’ but the first thing I thought of was my vape pen of choice, which are disposable. It has enough puffs to last several months with me so it’s more convenient for me to keep buying them than spending a large amount on a refillable one. Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan? Why? Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire is more nostalgic to me; I used to watch it nearly everyday. I never watched Lindsay’s movies other than Herbie. What do you think of the actor Michael Cera? No opinion but I remember the time when he was often used on 9Gag memes. Simpler times lol. Anyway, I haven’t seen any of his movies. What is the best thing about a Barbie doll? I think it’s really fun how they’ve come up with a bazillion outfits for Barbies and Kens. And different versions too – as far as I know there’s been a Filipino Barbie for a while :) What is something you'd say in your will? If I passed any time soon I’d like to include some things about my dogs and how they’re supposed to be taken care of. If we’re talking about what I’m putting in my will if I ever reach like 80, I just wanna make sure every person who’s been in my life and stayed for a bit is mentioned and thanked and I wanna make the list as expansive as I possibly can at that age. Idk, I’ve always been sentimental. Any thoughts on fake abortion clinics? What??? I don’t know what those are and what they do, but they sound awful. What was a username you'd thought wouldn't be taken but was taken? I’ve tried using my full name as a username in a few websites and seen them being taken. My first and last names don’t make a common pair, so I’ve always found it surprising. Cherry or peanut ice cream? Peanut. Not gonna lie, it’s an unusual flavor – but Asians kinda put peanuts on everything heh. What is your dream cellphone? Why? Whatever new phone Apple puts out because unfortunately I buy into toxic consumerist shit like that lol Would you rather be watching The Bachelor or The Bachelorette? Neither. From one to ten, how big of a movie buff are you? I’d give myself an 8. I’ve seen my fair share of movies and I can honestly say that my favorite films are not cliche picks, but I’ve also yet to see a bunch of classics that other ~movie buffs~ hail as being excellent movies like Taxi Driver, Silence of the Lambs, Rocky, American Psycho, etc. I also haven’t been watching movies as much as I used to, which takes down another point for me. Who is a celebrity you think will never get into trouble? The Irwin kids. I wouldn’t call them celebrities per se though; they’re in the spotlight for the most wholesome reasons. I’ve seen every segment Robert Irwin has had on Jimmy Fallon and it’s amazingly precious. What is an important holiday to you? Why? Probably the EDSA Anniversary because without it we’d still be under a dictatorship. Name a catty girl you really dislike. I wouldn’t call anyone I know that. What is a museum you would like to go to? The top 3 museums that I would love to visit are the Anne Frank House, the Met, and the Art Institute of Chicago. And wherever Monet’s paintings are, because he’s my favorite artist. Personally, do you look better with short hair or long hair? Short. Long, frizzy hair does not look good on me and on anyone else. What was the reason why you last blocked a person from your IM? He was a stranger who hit on me. I added him back only because we had a considerable amount of mutual friends and I thought that maybe he used to be a classmate or something, but he messaged me some shit that he had probably copy-pasted to 700 other girls saying like ‘hey do you mind if you and I talk? I find you really pretty’ like six seconds after adding him back. It was so fucking creepy and I never blocked someone so quickly. I was already in a foul mood that night so I also showed the brief interaction to Gab and I gave her freedom to curse the shit out of the guy if she wanted to. What is a cliche thing that happens a lot in anime? I don’t like anime and have never watched it. What are your views on the cartoon show Invader Zim? I’ve never seen that either. If you have some, what is tonight's homework about? I don’t have homework anymore. If you have one, what is your favorite sushi flavour? Cream cheese salmon rolls from a local place called Torch. What is the first thing you think of when I say 'Jack'? Rose. Do you understand JavaScript coding? A teeny bit, thanks to the theme customizations I used to do on Tumblr when I was 14. What would you do if you found a gun in your best friend's bedroom? Confront them, and maybe even scold them. I definitely would be angry. Not even just because it could mean they’re suicidal, but because I don’t believe in guns. What do you call your grandparents? I call both sets Lolo and Lola. When I say 'Go', you say: I just remember the song Green Light by Beyoncé because the chorus on that is her screaming ‘Go.’ What colour do you usually paint your nails? I never paint them. They’re pretty, but I never saw them as a necessity. What would be a cool earring design? People come up with cool designs all the time now though. I’m completely sure there are a million versions of this now but I would love sriracha sauce earrings haha. What do you think of raccoons? No opinion as I’ve never encountered them. Any thoughts on the actor Paul Rudd? NEVER AGES Who is the better liar: your mother or your best friend? Mom. Gab will lie to me sometimes but I can always tell. Are breast implants something you'd consider? Why or why not? I considered it when I was a teenager because people used to pick on me for being flat-chested, as if I had a choice as to what size my body would end up being. Also, flat chests were the butt of so many jokes in the early 2010s so it made me insecure for a very long time. Nowadays the environment is a lot nicer and I’m seeing many flat-chest positivity posts (if that’s even a thing) so I’ve changed my mind about implants.  Besides nightmares, what is the scariest thing about sleeping? Sleep paralysis. You can wake up from nightmares. Do you find the phrase 'nom nom nom' annoying? Not as much as ‘rawr’ annoys me. Do you look better with red lipstick or black lipstick? I look good in neither but I would go with red. When was the last time you had chocolate milk? Oooooh it’s been a while :( I feel like that’s something people have to start selling more, honestly. I don’t see chocolate milk being sold other than at the grocery or convenience stores and ugh, I just want more restaurants to add it on their menus lol. That being said, the last time I had it was in January, during a journalism workshop that we hosted in a school in Marikina. The teachers offered us that and a Fudgee Bar as thank-you snacks :)
