In Canada, it's become common for towns and cities that have airports to use the airport code when tagging stuff on social media related to the location in question.
As far as I know, this began with the city of Edmonton (Alberta) as a way to distinguish itself from Edmonton in the UK, Edmonton in Australia, and Edmonton in the US. We needed a way to distinguish ourselves in social media because it was very annoying and time-consuming to have to sort through the Edmonton tag for relevant posts about Canadian Edmonton.
So nowadays instead of using the #Edmonton tag, most people in my city use tags like #yeg, #yeglife, #yegfood, #yeglocal, #yegevents, and so on. There are even several community groups and businesses that now have YEG in their names:
What's a moment from your life you're really proud of?
I'll go first:
When I was around 12 or 13 years old I was at this day camp or something and there was this girl who had just moved to Canada from Asia (I think China?), so she basically spoke no English.
The white girls in our group started making fun of her lunch (it included seaweed strips), making gagging sounds and saying it stank.
What they didn't know was that, despite looking white and speaking fluent English, I too was an immigrant who had moved recently while barely speaking the language. And I too had been bullied by the white kids at my school when I didn't speak English.
So when I got to the table and they tried to get me to join in I saw red.
I don't entirely recall what I said (it was 20 years ago) but it was something to the tune of "It's not gross and it doesn't smell. You're just picking on her because she's different and can't fight back because she doesn't speak English."
Once the shock wore off, one of them tried to weakly argue that "It stinks."
"No, it doesn't. You're just using that as an excuse to be racist" I said firmly and sharply, not backing down an inch. The girls backed down and went to sit somewhere else, with the bullying victim giving me a small thankful smile.

Every so often I remember this time a few years ago where I posted this meme about my Canadian hometown
And my poor Texan buddy @just-tea-thanks replied back with "Are you guys okay??" all worried at how much snow we get.
Well, this year, 2024, it's January 1st and it's -1 degrees with no snow outside whatsoever so I can safely say that no, we're not okay. The fires and drought this year will be brutal.

On this day, two years ago: I was living in Calgary, drove up to Edmonton, and did a birthday ride in the North Saskatchewan River valley with this guy … bike barista, doctor, and voice of sanity in unreasonable times. I broke my $200 saddle on that ride and came close to breaking a few body parts. But it got me hooked on the #yegbike scene and the rest is history. Take life by the handlebars and enjoy the ride!
