when i first started TMA, Michael Distortion reminded me of a biblical angel (the name, the abilities, the description, tall & staticky & not-quite-right). but now that I think about it, Breekon & Hope fulfil that role better. they too can travel pretty much anywhere on earth. they’re purely apathetic to everything but their cause. they have one purpose and one identity and when it changes, their existence is irrelevant.

along those lines, I thought Martin Blackwood was like Samwise at first but by the end of the podcast I realized he’s far more like Bilbo.

Nature took this late April Fool's Day prank a little too far. Pictures from this morning.

It's technically still falling but it's becoming mostly slush already so it's impossible to tell how much we actually got. Luckily the trees seem to have already been freed of most of it, so when it freezes up tonight (and it will!) they shouldn't be affected.

Still glad we got groceries over with a day early, but the sleet started two minutes before we left and did not stop until an hour after we got back to the house so the roads were. ...Whew. And we're three turns off a main road and there's a hill, so... whew.

Reminds me of the housemate's childhood home and how in the winter you had to start down the hill with a specific rhythmic brake tap so you wouldn't overshoot the turn into the driveway or wind up slammed against the rock wall halfway into the garage. Massachusetts.

Taking some time out from actually making something to be annoyed on the internet, like you do. But I hope it serves as a warning when it comes to pleathers without a particularly sturdy backing. or maybe just in general.

I was going through some candidates for decently stiff fabric for a project and just happened to tug on a small hanging scrap of shiny black pleather and--

It sure wasn't supposed to be stretchy. Turned out the mesh the plastic used to be attached to was 2-way stretch, and well. It sure did stretch one way. The plastic did not.

Before and after very little effort put into stretching the fabric:

It isn't as if I don't understand that plastic degrades over time. I am what you call an "action figure enthusiast"; I've seen some horrors. And, full disclosure, this fabric had been purchased around 2010-ish, but also not exposed to excessive environmental stress or wear and tear. This is also a bit new to me in that there's not even any integrity in the mesh underneath, as it too immediately develops runs and with a little more force, pulls apart completely.

Alternately, the sturdy-backed shiny stuff I used for Crash is still perfectly fine, and purchased around the same time. But then I have had pricier (and objectively nicer!) pleather quite literally shed plastic coating in small particles until it was all separated from the cotton underneath, so...

Beware pleather for anything you may actually want to last unless it's already proven itself, I suppose.

...Back to working with ancient fabrics that aren't falling apart.

the need for humanities majors to take pot shots at STEM majors as a whole when talking about how society undervalues their discipline is frankly disgusting. Like every once in a while someone posts like "hey do you realize our real enemy is capitalism and sports coaches" and we all get some clarity, but once they passes the crab mentality comes right back

I *was* going to post about how the "we studied stem so our kids can study humanities and arts" phrase is kinda messed up since we shouldn't be in a society where generational wealth is required to pursue the latter, but tumbler then forced me to read the same old "humanities majors are Better than STEM majors because we learn critical thinking and analysis in school unlike them" drivel again so. Too bad you get it as part of a rant instead.

#meanwhile some humanities majors treat the inability to do arithmetic like some badge of honor #while laughing at STEM students who can't write prose well #as if they're not BOTH the result of poor educational systems #yammering #to the people I follow who boost this stuff. I'm honestly kind of disappointed. do better.

Ermm... I feel like this needs to be said. Outright. You should be a generally kind/good person to someone, even if you disagree with their beliefs and ideals. Even if you just don't understand them. My ex-friend, who I refuse to talk to, still deserves basic kindness and empathy, even though I genuinely hate him. Just because you don't like or understand someone, that doesn't mean you could hate them. You don't understand why someone... Likes a specific character? Get over it! Don't start chewing them up because of their separate opinion! You can ask why, you can be genuine and curious. But don't be an asshole. Even if they are extremely conservative, or hell, even homophobic. Being a good person doesn't condone their negative behavior. Being a good person doesn't mean you support their beliefs. It shows that you support yours. It shows that even if you receive hate, you can still give love. It even feels like, in most cases, being kind to the haters can defuse the situation. Obviously don't provoke people just looking for hate. But being different from someone else's ideals doesn't mean you deserve to be hated. I think everyone needs to know this.

Today I woke up in so much pain I made cheesecake.

Yeah, I have no idea where that logic came from, but I fucking did it.

It's a variant of my slightly notorious key lime pie cheesecake. Wanted to try a couple of different things that I will... see the results of tomorrow because this is setting up in the refrigerator overnight and that's that. Appearance is party due to deciding to ribbon the key lime pie batter through the cheesecake batter instead of trying to stack them, and because I long ago ceased to give a fuck what something looks like as long as it tastes good.

As for the pain, I don't... even know. Muscles been fucky lately. I'm sure that's a valid medical condition. And while it's certainly been cold, there haven't been any particular weather/air pressure-related events today so the extra bonus what the fuck was not appreciated. ...Ever, it must be noted.

Mood: pissed enough to make a dessert that requires more than one mixing bowl. Crushing the almost (but not quite!) expired graham crackers was at least a little satisfying.
