BONUS stuff from the AOTC screenplay...

1. Yoda probing the Dark Side.

In an earlier draft of the Attack of the Clones screenplay, Scene 51 (which I've already talked about here) ends with this comment by Mace, where he explains what Yoda is doing up in his quarters, followed up by Scene 52, showing Yoda meditating:

And it turns out, this is actually a mini plot point in this draft!

Since Qui-Gon's death, the Jedi are actually on the lookout for the remaining Sith Lord, waiting to sense even a trace of him... but then this happens.

And, like, nobody saw it coming! What the hell!

So that leads to this other cut scene (originally set right after Obi-Wan tells Anakin that Padmé "was happy to see us"), Scene 12, which features an evening conversation between Mace Windu and Yoda.

When Yoda says "the dark side of the Force clouds everything", that's not just an expression to say 'he doesn't know'.

The Dark Side has tainted everything around the Jedi, and THAT'S why the Sith have an advantage. Because they're used to it. They were 'born in the dark, molded by it'.

As a result... in this situation, they're the only ones who can foresee the possibilities of the future, while the Jedi are pretty much walking blind, in a fog.

It's not just that the Sith Lord is a master politician and the Jedi are politically inept. It's that, right now, he's the only one who can truly see the future and roll with it, while the only thing the Jedi can do is go forward, have their guard up and hope for the best.

Which a concept explored in the non-canon comic Sithisis from Star Wars: Visionaries (which, if I recall, was created by Derek Thompson after his regular interactions with George Lucas and a 45-minute interview with Ian McDiarmid)!

2. "Sifo-Dyas", aka Sidious

Okay, so some of y'all probably already knew this tidbit. I did, but didn't know it was in this draft of the script so it was a fun surprise:

Sifo-Dyas was originally a pseudonym used by Darth Sidious.

Throughout the script, his name is spelled "Sido-Dyas" (which sounds a lot more like "Sidious").

And when it comes to the mysterious Sido-Dyas, the Jedi talk about him like they've never heard of him before and full-on say he's an imposter.

At some point, there ended up being a typo in the scene where Obi-Wan talks to Lama Su, and the word was mispelled "Sifo-Dyas" and eventually Lucas decided to make him a different character.

Also the Tyranus who hired Jango Fett is referred to as "Darth Tyranus", in this draft, which I guess was changed because it was gonna be to obvious.

But it does indicate that after TPM, they concluded that Darth Maul was the Master, not the Apprentice.

3. Are Yoda and Padmé friends...?

Okay so there's this moment here:

Yoda taps Padmé with his cane!

Thus CONFIRMING that poking/tapping/hitting people with his cane is Yoda's love language!

Seconds later, there's also this line where Yoda tells Padmé to reign the selflessness and politics back and accept their help:

First off, I'm just picturing Padmé just casually kneeling so she can be at Yoda-height and I'm dying!

But also, like... he calls her "Padmé". They're on a first-name basis!

To me, that's gotta be an implication that in the 10 years between TPM and AOTC... I dunno, Padmé visited the Temple while Anakin was off-planet or just met Yoda at a meeting, and now they've formed a bond and they're pals.

If that's the case, then their Ilum mission in Clone Wars (2003) takes a whole new aspect.

And if we're rolling with this idea... how much of Padmé did Yoda see in Luke?? None? Some?

I think it's a case of when Luke is screwing up royally "he's just like Anakin ffs" and then the few times he's actually listening "nice to see you inherited some of your mother's sense!"

Bear in mind, these bits of dialog never made it on the screen but they did make it to the "final" version of the screenplay published in The Art of Attack of the Clones. So if I had to guess the reason for deletion, it was probably for pacing purposes.

Bonus:

Yoda introducing the younglings in his care is such an adorable thing.

Just in general, this scene is great. George Lucas had this to say in the AOTC commentary track:

"This is a chance for me to play with that more mischievous side of his character and get away from the 'official, serious Yoda' that ends up [...] on the Jedi Council, where he really isn't allowed to be as fun and tease people. In this environment with the kids, he's able to lighten up a little bit, which I really wanted to do for his character. It's much more what his character is in the other movies, especially in Empire Strikes Back."

But also... like Yoda is hyping up the younglings! Is that a thing?

Did Dooku & Yoda have competitions and introduce their respective clans like hype men? I'm picturing a scene where Yoda's like:

Yoda: "To a competition, the mighty Bear Clan challenges the Thranta Clan!" Bear Clan younglings: "GROOAAAAH!"

And Dooku is like:

Dooku: "The gallant Thranta Clan is ready to clean the floors with the Bear Clan whenever you want!" Thranta Clan younglings: *POSE MAJESTICALLY*

Let me tell y'all about the silly obikin au I will never have time to write

Obi-Wan is an osteopath, mostly doing cranial work (basically using very gentle touch and massage to work with tension and tissue in the body). He inherited a private practice from Qui-Gon and he's well known for being very gentle and talking about his garden while he works

Anakin used to be a popular and talented open wheel racing car driver until he had a life changing crash, lost his arm and his career and had to fall back on being a mechanic. He still experiences a lot of pain throughout his body from the accident

Padmé basically forces Anakin through Obi-Wan's door to get some treatment. (Padmé and Obi have known each other forever, she sometimes comes to him after a really stressful time at work)

Anakin is skeptical. To say the least. He doesn't get how some dude fiddling with his neck is going to help him feel any better, and he says so. Obi-Wan thinks he's hilarious

They spend about 300 years talking about Anakin's various injuries and pain and Obi-Wan is so sweet and makes so many notes in his completely unreadable handwriting

Anakin lies down on the bed thing, and Obi-Wan sits behind him and just. Holds Anakin's head in his hands?? For 10 minutes?? While talking about soil composition?? Anikin is starting to think that this is an elaborate prank.

THEN Obi-Wan asks Anakin to lift up his butt, and puts his hand right there!!! Anakin is lying with his ass on Obi-Wan's hand!!!! He doesn't know why he's blushing so hard, but this time he can see the concentration on Obi-Wan's face and he's just... very pretty

Anakin was expecting a lot more pulling and pushing of his joints but Obi-Wan is just gentle. His hands are so big. Anakin is a MESS

After the appointment Obi-Wan warns Anakin that he might feel some discomfort tomorrow, which Anakin is pretty sure is a joke because come on. Obi-Wan barely touched him!

It is not a joke

Anakin is dying

Obi-Wan has performed some kind of dark wizardry on him

Anakin texts Padmé a combination of his favourite swear words, and she's just like 'lol he did warn you'

But the day after is the most pain free day Anakin has had in years. All the tension has melted out of him. He walks around smiling. Rex and Cody are, what's up with this dude, where's the King of Assholes gone?

Anakin is thinking about Obi-Wan's hands. A lot. Maybe also dreaming about them. It's not a big deal. He books another appointment

Meanwhile Obi-Wan is having a personal and professional crisis because his crush on the grumpy ex racing driver is starting to get out of control. Sue him, Anakin has the nicest ass in town!

Please don't sue him

Queue several months of a very touch-starved Anakin pining after Obi-Wan and his beautiful, beautiful hands. Padmé starts to regret introducing the two of them. They're both unbearable idiots

Obi-Wan has another professional crisis and nearly kisses Anakin while adjusting one of the joints in his back

Anakin thinks Obi-Wan was just concentrating really hard and got a bit too close

Will they ever get their shit together? Not until Padmé personally locks them in Obi-Wan's supply closet

It's a lot more than 7 minutes in heaven. Anakin needs his back adjusting all over again afterwards. And he needs to find a new osteopath, because Obi-Wan insists that Anakin can't be his boyfriend AND his client ;D

To absolutely no one's surprise, I'm only just now starting on Obitine week fics, but I am VERY excited about day one so here's a preview <3

As he approaches her, Satine turns from her conversation with Padmé and grins, opening her arms to him. Words fail him. His tongue is as silent as the grave she is supposed to be in. But there she stands, welcoming him into her embrace. He takes one last disbelieving look at her and collapses into her, burying his face in her hair and holding her tightly.

She’s solid, real. He nuzzles further into her neck and holds back a sob, straining to keep silent.

His intensity catches her off guard, but she recovers quickly, smiling bemusedly and rubbing circles on his back.

“Satine,” he whispers into her shoulder. The word sounds like a prayer spoken directly into her skin, where he hopes it, and all he means to convey, will make its way to her soul. He marvels at the way her name feels on his lips after so long of it being unspoken. Of trying to forget what had happened to her.

Oh yeah, there's angst ahead right from the start. Because of course there is. I'm not sure if I'll manage to get through the whole week of fics like I was planning to (I may have set my aspirations too high) but I hope y'all will follow along!

How could this happen. Padmé, once so vibrant, so full of life, practically glowing with it, was growing cold. Around her, the medical droids hung back, taking care of the infants that cried for their mother. The mother they would never meet, never know. When they grew older and looked in the mirror, would they know it was her eyes staring back at them? Her smile gracing their lips? Her laughter in their throats or her spirit in their hearts? No. They never would. They would not be told of the sacrifices she made or how she fought for their future, for the future of every child born under the stars of their galaxy.

"Do something!" Fox begged. "Save her! Please! Don't just hover there, help her!" She was fighting back sobs as she reached for her friend, grasping her arm, shaking, trying to rouse her. It hung so limply in her hand that she could feel her knees weaken beneath her with the sickness of it. It wasn't fair. It wasn't right. "Help her," she begged again, her words coated with a sob. They fell on deaf mechanical ears, for there was nothing they could do to help her. Padmé was dead.

"It should be me, not you." Tears were streaming down her face. "It should be me! Take me instead! Take me instead of her!" Fox begged whatever soundless gods might be watching. She reached out for the Force, tried to grasp it within her hands as if it took could do something, but it was too late. There was nothing within her hands except her friend's limp arm.

"Don't leave me, Padmé," Fox whispered, the devastation choking her. Gently, so, so gently, she pushed the wet strands of hair from Padmé's forehead. Over and over again, as if she was somehow soothing her instead of looking down upon her expressionless face. It was almost as if she was only sleeping. "Please. Don't leave me, Padmé. I can't do this without you. I--I don't know how to live without you." Fox's tears fell, splashing against the skin gone cold beneath them. Quickly she tried to wipe them away, not wanting even the symbol of her grief to touch her friend. Her Queen. "I don't know what to do without you," she sobbed. Gasping for breath, ribs shuttering beneath the cracking of her heart. "Please, wake up, Padmé? Please? I love you, I need you, the galaxy needs you. Wake up! Padmé, wake up!" Again her words were lost to sobs as she leaned against the table, hardly able to hold herself up. Feeling the droids standing nearby, waiting for her to finish so they could pull the too white sheet over her body.

Fox stayed there for what felt like hours, alternating between the howling sobs of an animal and the quiet weeping of a wraith. All the while brushing back Padmé's hair, coiling it around her fingertips until Obi-Wan entered and said it was time. Time for what, did not matter. Once she left this room, she would be leaving herself behind. A ghost would follow the Jedi, but her heart would stay where it was. In the hands of the woman she loved.

Standing, Fox looked down upon her one last time. Forcing a small smile as she bit back more tears. She leaned down, pressing her trembling lips to Padmé's forehead, unable to stop the quiet sob that followed, again shaking through her body. "Sleep well," she whispered. "May we meet again in dreams...May we meet again."

Around the time I got the Tumblr app on my phone, I started seeing the word "blorbos" being thrown around.

First time I saw it: "What's a blorbo?"

Saw it a few more times and discerned the definition through context clues: "Okay, so it's the new hot buzzword in internet slang."

So then I knew what it meant, but I didn't really care.

the opera that anakin attends with palpatine is a mon calamari ballet… called squid lake, but then start thinking more about it and how there's so much thematic significance in that one off detail?

like how the whole story is practically anakin's relationship with padmé?

that a young prince, siegfried, falls in love with princess odette. odette and her companions transform into swans under the spell cast by the evil sorcerer baron von rothbart. their days are spent gracefully gliding on a lake, only to return to their human form at night. the only thing that can break the spell is true love, and rothbart will do anything in his power to stop it. and that anything happens to be marrying the sorcerer's daughter, who has been manipulated to be a mirror image of odette and thus trick the prince. the curse isn't broken because his love for odette is no longer true, she's doomed to be a swan forever and drowns herself. then he realizes he effectivlely killed her and drowns himself, sealing their love in the eternity of death?

and how that almost mirrors everything that happens between padmé and anakin leading up to the events of revenge of the sith? everything into his arc as darth vader, where the anakin everyone knew and loved had chosen his own 'death' through accepting the dark side? and how the last bits of anakin truly died when he learned that he, in effect, had killed padmé by force choking her?

On the political ramifications of a Jedi marrying a Senator

This is Zorlian Vesq from Coruscant News, it is 8 AM Middle Eastern Coruscant Time, and here are the news of the day.

In a shocking revelation, Nabooian priest Father Herriem has come forward stating that one year ago he has officiated a marriage between Senator Padmé Amidala, representative of Naboo and current leader of the liberal south-up faction in the Senate, and Knight Anakin Skywalker, Jedi General of the Republic Army. The picture of a marriage certificate has been released on the HoloNet. Neither the office of Senator Amidala nor the Speaker of the Jedi Order have been available for comment so far. Already factions standing currently in opposition to Amidala’s group have called for a re-vote on several bills, most prominently the Clone Assignation bill that had been passed last month, which allowed Jedi Generals to directly supervise Clone Soldiers without additional counsel from the Central Coruscant Military. Senator Tabbens from the conservative east-central faction has made allegations that Amidala’s decisions may have not been entirely her own since the marriage date, but that she may have been influenced by Knight Skywalker with the so-called Jedi mind trick. Other opposition members have levelled accusations that Amidala may have trying to influence the Jedi Order via Knight Skywalker, as Naboo has been seeing an increased amount of Jedi attention and service, with the most memorable occasion being the release of a biological weapon near the planet’s capital Theed.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on another bill today, the Military Financial Revision Act, which had been set out to adjust the budget plan of the current legislature to allow for more money to be spent on the war effort. Peace organizations have been demonstrating against the bill for the past week. It is uncertain whether the newly revealed affair will cause enough factions to vote for a re-schedule.

Obi-Wan rolled over with a groan when his door chime interrupted his much deserved rest. He looked at the time on his comm – barely past 8 AM by Temple time. Sadly two weeks of extraplanetary siege had once again messed with his sleep schedule. Not that he had been getting all that much sleeping with the constant battle going on. The notification button was also blinking, but he didn’t have time for that right now.

His door chimed again, his visitor obviously very impatient. So he got up, and after remembering that he was only wearing a pair of sleep pants and nothing else grabbed the next available tunic that didn’t have blood on it.

He opened the door to see Mace standing in the hallway. His mouth was set in a thin line, his body language tense. Obi-Wan immediately straightened up from his tired slouch, knowing well that this expression meant bad news. In his hand he held out a data pad for Obi-Wan to take.

Obi-Wan took it, and nearly dropped it again when he saw the thick headline that filled half the screen. He rapidly read through the article, his grip on the pad turning more and more white-knuckled with every line.

“I take it you didn’t know then?” Mace asked once he had finished. Obi-Wan could only mutely shake his head. Mace sighed and finally herded Obi-Wan back into his room, closing the door behind them as Obi-Wan sank down onto the couch, eyes still glued to the pad as if that might change the words written there.

“Obi-Wan,” Mace said, causing him to tear his eyes away at last. “He’s not here, is he?”

Obi-Wan shook his head. “No, he’s-“ He carelessly dropped the pad on the table, the casing clattering against the wood, and buried his head in hands. “He’s with her.” His padawan had snuck out almost as soon as they had arrived at their temple quarters. At the beginning of his relationship with Padmé, Obi-Wan had told him several times to be careful about being seen with the Senator, and with all the sneaking Anakin had been doing it seemed like he really had taken his advice to heart for once. And now it turned out that some paparazzi shooting a candid photo of them standing to close was the least of their problems. Then again, how in nine Sith hells should he have known that they would do something like marriage-!

“I see,” Mace said. Obi-Wan knew that his friend was trying to sound neutral, but the words still sounded like they were a sentence to death.

“Mace, I-“ But what was he supposed to say, really? Force, where had he gone wrong? Didn’t he tell Anakin time and time again that he needed to be careful with his relationship to Padmé, that he needed to remember the position they were all in?

“Obi-Wan,” Mace said again, sitting down next to him on the couch. Obi-Wan turned his head to see the other master looking at him with sympathy in his eyes. “You didn’t know. There’s nothing else you could have done. Skywalker was old enough to make his own decisions.”

“He was still a padawan when he… did this!” Obi-Wan cried, only now realizing the implications of the date on the certificate. One hand came up to rub at his temple. “Is this even legal? He was still underage, for Force’s sake!” If he didn’t know Padmé, only for that he would have… but then, he never would have thought that the Padmé he considered his friend would do something this dangerous for seemingly no reason.

“By our laws he was, yes, but by Coruscant and Nabooian laws he was already of age,” Mace said. “It won’t matter to the media, or the Senate, that he couldn’t have given consent by Jedi law. They probably don’t even know about it.”

“But why would they do this? It doesn’t make any sense!” Obi-Wan exclaimed. “They had been around each other for what, one week? And then they suddenly decide to get married? Even disregarding the rule breaking, and Padmé knowing that her political career would be ruined, no one gets married after being in a relationship for a week at most!” He knew that the people of Naboo where pretty conservative when it came to the status of marriage in their society, with re-marrying being very rare as most people only took one partner for a life time. But Padmé had always been pretty liberal, and with how long she had been on Coruscant no one would have expected her to adhere this strictly to tradition.

“Obi-Wan, we need you to talk with them,” Mace said.

Obi-Wan looked at him, suddenly feeling tired. “And who is ‘we’?”

Mace sighed. “The council.”

“So you already kicked me out then?” Obi-Wan said with a humourless laugh.

“You are currently suspended,” Mace tried to calm him down. “No one really believes that you knew of this, but we also can’t just let it slide.”

“I know,” Obi-Wan said. “I’m not- I would have done the same in your stead I suppose.”

“Obi-Wan, he was still your padawan, yes, but he was also already a senior padawan, on a solo mission, and already preparing for his trials. He should have been well able to make his own decisions. No one is blaming you for this.”

Obi-Wan looked away. “And what would you have me say to them?” he finally asked. “I can’t see any way how to unfuck this situation.”

“Well, since Skywalker was a padawan, there is the possibility to try to lay all the blame to Senator Amidala’s feet,” Mace began.

“But then we’d lose one of the staunchest supporters we currently have in the Senate,” Obi-Wan finished. “But you also can’t demote Anakin because he has become part of the Republic’s publicity duo.”

“First we want to find out what their reason behind all this was,” Mace said. “We can’t get to work until we have all the cards on the table.”

“Send a summon to Anakin then,” Obi-Wan said. To know that Anakin would go behind his back like this, that he would keep such a big secret from him… all the trust he thought they had built between them in the years they had spent first as Master and Padawan, then as duo in the war – gone.

“We already tried,” Mace said. “He isn’t answering.”

Obi-Wan sighed, the heavy blanket of weariness on his shoulders pressing down even more on him. “He probably thinks you are going to throw him out of the Order.”

“He did break the rule of attachment,” Mace said. “It wouldn’t have been a problem had he been simply in a relationship, but binding himself legally to someone, let alone a Senator… it is a heavy offense, but banishing someone for it? That requires a completely different level of crime.”

“Would Anakin really see it as that grave a punishment?” Obi-Wan said bitterly, folding his hands in his lap. “I wonder if he ever really saw us as family, when he seems to have no problem with binding himself to someone else.”

“Talk to them,” Mace said. “It won’t do well to speculate. And you are the only one of us who can hope to get a decent answer out of them.”

Obi-Wan closed his eyes. He wanted to scream, he wanted to cry; there was so much anger and frustration and grief inside him, feeling like a maelstrom was raging in his chest, tearing at his insides. But there was no time for him to wait for it to settle down, to meditate on his feelings and try to come to terms with the betrayal and broken trust he was experiencing.

“Alright,” he finally said, standing up from the couch, trying to fortify his heart in preparation of what was going to happen. “I’ll go.”
