Thank you! 💜 At first I had a little issue figuring out who I wanted to do this for until I was in the shower and figured out the perfect pairing, Tachanka and Skylar!

A month has passed since that fateful day, and the pain hasn’t subsided, not even a little. No parent should have to go through that, no parent should have to bury their own child. It’s not right. A child should outlive their parents, not the other way around. 

And as much as it hurt, Skylar and Alex put on a brave face and continued their days like normal. With three other kids to take care of, they both needed to be strong. They didn’t need to pick up on the negative energy. 

A moment later Grace walked into the kitchen, taking a seat at the bar. 

“What are you baking?” 

“Cupcakes. We haven’t had them in a while so I decided why not.” 

“I see they’re chocolate as well, can’t wait until they’re done.” 

Skylar gave her a small smile as she mixed the batter in the bowl. The twins were asleep so she wouldn’t get the begging of them to help; not that she minded she loved baking with them, just sometimes she’d rather do things on her own. It goes faster that way. 

Grace watched from the other side in silence, occasionally glancing down at her phone. She got it for her thirteenth birthday, and both Skylar and Alex thought it would be best for her to have one just in case something happens. And of course, like every other teenager she’s been glued to it. 

“Can I ask you a question?” 

“Of course.” 

She stopped mixing the batter and put her full attention on Grace. Her voice sounded uncertain, so she knew it must be important. 

“H.Has dad mentioned anything about the baby? Even in private? He just seems so normal, like nothing happened.” 

“Not since the day after it happened.” She gave Grace a small smile, and reached for her hand. “Don’t worry about him, we all mourn in different ways. If I’m honest, I don’t think it hit him yet.” 

“I guess that would make sense.” 

Skylar gave her another smile and let go of her hand, returning back to the cupcake batter. 

What she said about Alex did strike something in her, not once has she seen him mourn since the day. Not even in private, where he would normally break down, it wasn’t like him. Then again, this isn’t the same as working too much and not being with the family, they lost a child. She thought for sure she would’ve caught him crying at some point, like he did with her on numerous occasions. It made her question some things.

It’s been a few hours since that conversation with Grace came up and it hasn’t left her mind since. 

It was almost midnight and her and Alex were getting ready for bed like they do every night. But those thoughts kept plaguing her mind, so she bit the bullet. 

“Moya sladost’, can I ask you something?” 

He looked up at her from untying his boot and nodded. “You don’t need to ask me that, kotyonok.” 

“Are you okay? I mean really okay.” 

“Da, why do you ask?” 

Skylar heavily sighed and sat down on the bed, she could tell he was lying. The quick subtle answers gave it away. “Because I’ve barely seen you mourn. We lost a child and you go on like nothing happened.” 

He turned to her, face softening. “Don’t say that, I wanted that child as much as you did. But I’m okay, I promise.” 

She rolled her eyes and stood up, placing her hands on her hips. He was being stubborn, and it only proved that she was right. He hasn’t accepted the death of their child yet, he won’t mourn until he does. He’ll go about his days like usual until it hits him like a bag of bricks one day. 

“You know Grace is worried about you. She thinks you’re acting a little too normal for what happened.” 

“I’m not going to act all sad in front of her, she should know that.” 

“She knows that, she just wants you to be okay, like I do.” 

He sighed and stood up, walking over to her. He grabbed both of her hands into his and gently squeezed them. “I appreciate that, I do kotyonok. I really am okay.”

She scoffed and pulled her hands free, furrowing her brows. “It’s not okay, you’re not fine! And I want you to stop lying to yourself about it, you haven’t accepted our son's death.” 

The tears started to well in her eyes and her voice cracked, things won’t go back to normal until he stops being so stubborn. 

“Maybe I mourned first because I was the one carrying him, you didn’t have too. You didn’t have to have your heart rip out of your chest when you realized something was wrong because you stopped feeling him move. Don’t you dare say you are okay when I know you better than that.” 

Alex just stared at her in silence, lips pursed. Deep down he knew she was right, he wasn’t okay, not by a long shot. They knew having kids could prove difficult, but when the twins were born happy and healthy, they couldn’t wait to have another one. It wasn’t long after the twins' birth that Skylar became pregnant again, all of them eager to meet the newest addition to the family, then it ended in tragedy. 

When the doctor said there might be some difficulty in conceiving he thought that maybe she wouldn’t get pregnant at all or maybe a few miscarriages. He wasn’t expecting a stillbirth at eight and half months along. The nursery was ready and everything and they even had a name picked out for him, Luka. 

And he can still remember that phone call from her like it happened mere minutes ago. The sound of her voice cracking as she tried to keep calm in front of the children, him freaking out after they hung up and how he asked Maxim to watch the kids as he took her to the hospital. He wanted that child so damn badly and it was ripped from them. 

“You’re right, kotyonok. I’m not okay, not even close.” 

Her face softened and she wiped a few tears from her eyes as she walked over to him, wrapping her hand around his waist. “Neither am I, moya sladost’. And I don’t think I ever will be.” 

He wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. No parent should have to go through this, it was just wrong and the hole that was left in their hearts will never be filled. The only thing that made it a tiny bit easier was knowing that they still have three healthy and happy kids to look after.
