Bird-Dog
The Verlaines
1987, Flying Nun (Bandcamp)
The Verlaines, authors of an all-time (apt and fav) album title in Some Disenchanted Evening, are probably the most ‘acquired taste’ of the original wave of Flying Nun/Dunedin sound New Zealand bands (The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Tall Dwarfs etc.). Though the jingling single-word chorus of debut single “Death and the Maiden” proved they could be as elfin and twee-sounding as any of their peers, main Verlaine Graeme Downs tended to favour downcast melodies, played with buttoned-down desperation, like running to catch a bus to a job interview in the rain while holding an umbrella and a suitcase. All the good Flying Nun bands played with the tension between their poppy sounds and frequently dour or sarcastic lyrics, but of the lot Verlaines are the clear prescription for wry depressives (or at least people who think Robert Forster was the better of the Go-Betweens).
youtube
There’s an argument to made for 1987’s early singles comp Juvenilia as the most accessible introduction to their sound, but Bird-Dog is their most complete album statement. I was thrilled when the album was finally repressed on vinyl after 36 years, primarily because it is an essential “stare at the cover while listening” LP. Forget the rain/bus/umbrella metaphor I tried earlier; this brave brown smudge of a dog heedlessly pursuing (or being lured by?) a bird to the edge of a seaside cliff is bang on. At 12” x 12”, the visible brushstrokes of the hidden cliff in John Collie’s oil painting have a roiling texture, almost as though it is eating away at the soft green turf above. On the reverse, the same location is depicted sans dog, this time in gentle watercolour, the world at peace without all that barking and striving.
It's all there in the title track too. The lyric begins as a withering assessment of a man’s life spent yearning for transcendence who eventually grows old and slow, buys “a boarding house for slaves / and drinks imported German beer.” But if our escapes often become our jail cells, in the end we love our bars despite it, and the coda of “Bird-Dog” turns into an all-timer of a drinking song, basically a post-punk “Master of the House” from Les Miserables. Thrill of chasing bird despite cliff, one more brew to put off morning.
It's subtle at first, but throughout Bird-Dog, the Verlaines augment their basic power trio sound with unusual instrumentation, a flugelhorn here, a xylophone there, till the album closes with a fully orchestrated* flourish. The tricky, XTC-like “Icarus Missed” adds Gregorian chant (!) and bassoon (!!), followed by “C.D. Jimmy Jazz and Me,” a re-recording of their first single’s B-side with its humble accordion ride-out replaced with a sugary string and horn fanfare that wouldn’t be out of place soundtracking a Sonic Generations level. For an album that starts out as morose and minimal as this one, it's quite an about-face—one of those moments maybe when you shake off your malaise and see the richness in the life you’ve earned.

* Okay, so they don’t go full philharmonic; it’s the usual band plus five-piece string, trumpet, and trombone accompaniment, if you’re a stickler. But it sounds plenty sweeping!
🎶✨️when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, publish. Then, send this ask to 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)🎶✨️

me listening to thats really super supergirl by xtc over and over instead of partaking in the voice chat because im a sigma male and was barred from participating
I was late. And I got street parking really close. I loaded my hand truck. Jules had the elevator ready for me. Really, the cards were falling into place for a smooth set. Which is good, because I had no plan, except that I was going to start with the PiL track “Memories.” On 7” single. Import. A record I’ve had since release in 1979.
I didn’t play PiL. At all.
An Athletic and a bottle of water were waiting for me in the booth, as I set up and did an equipment check. I started late. With Iggy. Which sounds great. I decide on a UB40 LP cut to follow it up. Turntable left is dead. And I’m starting late so I get a nice dead spot. You know what? I roll with it. I figure out I haven’t potted up the channel, and the power cord is loose. I fix it. Surprisingly, I’m not rattled. I just deal.
I get in a 7” groove going, but I can tell I’m strangely disconnected from the scene. There are people in the house, but they don’t stay long. It’s St. Patrick’s Day (observed), and there is green in the building. Even though I’m half-Irish, I’m not a Catholic, I don’t drink, and I’m old, so I’m out. I’m not a participant in amateur holidays. Not a joiner. Never have been. I’ve missed out on a lot of fun being this way, but I don’t care.
I’m consciously trying to organize the set in a different way. Introducing new tracks into the mix. I’m not really sure if things are in the right order. I play “Down On the Street” from Funhouse by The Stooges, which I love, but maybe I should have gone with “Loose.” Either way, the pressing sounds great – thundering low end and a great track.
Another NA is delivered, by CP, and even though I’ve admired them, and their work outside the bar, it’s the first time we’ve ever spoken to each other. They remark that the 7” boxes are cute. It seems to be a theme. The majority of the first hour is 7” singles. It’s not a plan, it’s just the way it’s worked out. It’s never a plan. I played Tony Basil for instance! And, not because it’s Irish.
It’s hard to get a bead on the room's energy. It seems like people are coming and going faster than normal. I can hear people, but they feel like they are a long way away. My transitions are sloppy, not always tight and good. I need to start concentrating.
Jules comes up, and tells me that this is her last Third Space Saturday. That is not welcome news. When I can’t get a good feel for the crowd, I can always watch Tavis, Jules, CP and Brando to key on. It’s going to be different in the future.
My friend Geneva shows up after going to a flamenco show earlier in the evening. I was unable to satisfy her craving for a ELO song. Maybe next time. I couldn’t find any of my ELO records. 7”ers, of course. “Last Train to London” would be a great jam to have.
I’m not tired, but I’m not entirely engaged either. There is something in the air. Geneva helps, she is always a good audience, but I’m mentally elsewhere – maybe at the legislature, maybe at Treefort. Geneva says I have some girls dancing in the video games section, so that sharpens me up and gets me back in the groove.
Jules comes up and asks me for more hip-hop, and I kind of oblige. Although I am not a genre DJ, I love to throw it in the mix, because it is music, and it stands up.
I go a little over, but when I play the Kendra Morris 45 at 33, and don’t notice until the chorus, I know it’s time to pack up.

Going to have to go back through my crates to try and recreate. I’m kind of foggy on the specifics.
Next Third Space is Record Store Day, 20 April, 2024. I may have my man IGA split the night with me; we’ll see what the big bosses decide is best.

The one thing my Dad wanted me to have when he...passed, was his new iPad. I couldn't find it so my mom and I assumed that my millionaire sister stole it and gave to the GOLDEN CHILD:her eldest, her son. My sister took my Dad's very expensive Art collection off the damn wall while he was still at home and very much Alive!! I got pissed BC she had the means to help with at home care but she just traveled, bought more properties and houses, and barely ever came by to see my Dad and Mom and stopped calling and going with him to important Dr appointments! She can't handle anything emotional or was in denial. "She's so busy. Leave her alone." That's what my alcoholic mother always said. Bullshit. And my Dad LOVED THE BEACH BOYS soooo much that that is the ONLY MUSIC he wanted played at his "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" and she had the audacity to try to take the painting by *Brian Wilson* (the Beach Boy & he signed it). My Dad, Mom and I all freaked out. So it stayed.. Plus there's OVER 30 extremely EXPENSIVE WORKS OF ART in our garage. But she just had to take his favorite art off his wall. I was a caregiver for my grandfather who passed 6/8/2024 AND for my DAD (cancer EVERYWHERE) & MY MOTHER (NON-functioning ALCOHOLIC/ADDICT). She was horrible to my Dad the last weeks...she said the most HORRIBLE things....
I'm used to her treating me like shit and kissing my sisters ass. I was the "bad child"- kicked out of 2 private schools, anorexic, raver/junglist during late 90s/early 2000s so definitely took drugsssss...XTC,Special K, whip itsssss, Buddha, snow..... But then focused back on my dancing (I had gone to a PERFORMING ARTS HIGH SCHOOL).... SOLo when I left my university away from home (yeah, I was in a sorority) and came back home to get an AA in Dance, join a hip hop girl crew, and was a go go dancer at a cool lesbian bar. I was happy and sober again. Just Buddha. Then I went back to university but in my home town... Getting a BA in Creative Writing/English Literature. (And started a chapter of the sorority I was in at UCF).Getting to write freely, studying Hinduism as a Christian, and starting my own brand new chapter of my sorority with new and old friends -making some new roles since we were new. I remained the Philanthropy Chair for 2 years BC I loved helping people, charity, just spending mine time doing for others!
But then I broke up with my DJ boyfriend....so I called my cousin/best friend for a new green connect and met the love of my life-the one who got away who I still see and talk to 22 years later! That's confusing.
I got off topic....
My Dad died 9/15/2024. 3 months after my Papaw and I'm broken. Completely.
I'm already on disability for MENTAL & PHYSICAL disorders.
I NEED A CAREGIVER BUT IM ONE TO EVERYONE ELSE...even my (ex) husband who has been unemployes for 7 years! So codependent and addicted.... I need to go away to a hospital!
