don't you just love the idea of recluse wei wuxian chopping wood deep in the forest living his cottagecore life, while out in the city, the country's top engineers are losing their minds trynna contact him to work on some ancient complex system he designed when he was bored & 16
young engineer genius wwx coming into the scene all cocky cuz he rlly is the sht, except he hated politics and that ended up biting him in the ass (no thanks to good ol' money and nepotism) until he was burned out, spat out and forgotten by the industry
young lwj, who sucks at politics so badly not even his pedigree can completely save him, is the capable team lead sent to find the legendary wei, expecting to find some old rickety man he'll have to speak slowly to, to get him to decode this ancient script
and getting the boner shock of his life when he turns up to the address in the middle of nowhere, and sees this ruggedly handsome man not THAT old, hair long and in a messy ponytail, half naked with an old ratty shirt tied around is waist, chest gleaming with sweat 😳😳🥵🥵
wwx: *chops wood, all sweaty, chest heaving, abs gleaming, muscles flexing with every swing* lwj: 🧍‍♂️ wwx: you lost kid? lwj, inwardly:

See-through
@greywake
🥵🩻🥰
This is partly inspired by my experience having a sprained ankle. It didn't go as well for me as it did for WWX here, though...
If you find any medical inaccuracies, no you didn't.
Enjoy!
Wei Wuxian has always known he'll end up in the hospital eventually - trouble follows him like he owes it money, and he has a sense of adventure that sometimes pushes him to extremes that don't even make funny stories after.
He figured he'll end up rushed into the ER after some epic fight or a car crash or something news-worthy, though - but no, he's in the ER cause he's sprained his ankle slipping on ice on the way to work this morning. Damn capitalism!
He's more upset about the stupidity of the thing than about the fact that he's had to hobble his way to the hospital because he can't drive (if he tries applying any pressure on his leg he goes lightheaded with pain) and nobody bothered to pick up the phone or answer his texts asking for help - it's the middle of the work day, of course people are busy.
He should be busy too, he has a big project coming up, he really can't afford wasting time with something like this - yet here he is, doing exactly that. His boss is going to be royally pissed, but at least he's in the stage of the project that allows him to work from home and not fall behind.
It's going to be a pain getting A-Yuan to and from school, though. Wen Qing can only get him once or twice a week at most, since she's started working as a surgeon at the general hospital two towns over, and Wen Ning has just begun his internship at a law firm...
A nurse wheels Wei Wuxian down the hallway, away from the emergency room, passing through two large glass doors after a few turns that were only a bit too sharp. He reads "Radiology" on a wall and sighs as the nurse leaves him in the waiting area to go to, presumably, talk to the doctor on call about his case. Wei Wuxian doesn't even bother to hope his bones are fine, actually - he can tell they're not, with the way his ankle looks like it grew a tennis ball overnight or something.
The door to the doctor's office opens and Wei Wuxian almost doesn't hear - if his nurse is going to handle his wheelchair as roughly again, he's pretty sure he'll fall off and last thing he needs is to sprawl all over the hospital floors.
But instead of his ER nurse, the door opens to reveal someone else - and for a moment, Wei Wuxian forgets about the pain in his ankle and how having it immobile will complicate his life. A man walks out in white scrubs that Wei Wuxian finds sexier than any lingerie, stretched taught over the planes of his chest and shoulders, short sleeves revealing beefy arms. He's tall and he's so handsome it should be illegal - his long, shiny, dark hair is pulled back into a ponytail and two strands artfully frame his face, his golden eyes glinting in the sterile lighting... Wei Wuxian distantly remembers Wen Qing watching this one medical show where they called a hot doctor "McDreamy" and Wei Wuxian is pretty sure he met the real life inspiration for that nickname.
"My name is Lan Wangji and I will be attending to you for now." he says and Wei Wuxian can only try not to think of what attending to he'd like this man to do to him. "Let me take you to the X-Ray room and we will discuss your condition further."
Wei Wuxian nods because it takes all his strength not to say something along the lines of "you can take me whenever, wherever or however you like". He does wonder why it's not his nurse doing this instead of the doctor, but if Wei Wuxian can avoid getting wheeled around like a sack of potatoes, he'll take it.
The walk is short and he tries not to be disappointed about not getting this hot piece of man pushing him around like he's presumably, weightless. With the way he looks, he must be really strong, he could probably lift Wei Wuxian with one hand and throw him around like a ragdoll... fuck, they better not be measuring his heart rate again because he's past the 100s for sure.
They enter a large, chilly room, sterile white, a metal table in the center with the X-Ray machine hovering ominously over it. Though Wei Wuxian has always been fascinated with the engineering of such things, he has to admit they need to make these machines look less creepy.
The doctor brings him near the table, and Wei Wuxian wonders if he can just joist himself up on it using his arms only and his one healthy foot. Whatever they've given him for pain in the ER has worn off by now and his ankle throbs with pain insistently.
"No need." Lan Wangji says as he notices Wei Wuxian trying to place himself on the table. "Allow me."
Wei Wuxian's heart leaps into his throat as he feels himself hoisted up and then gently laid down onto the cold table, Lan Wangji not having even so much as winced during the process. Now, he's not on the same level, but Wei Wuxian knows himself to be quite heavy, though he doesn't look it. He's done a good bit of archery before he got pulled out of it by his guardians and he's always enjoyed going to the gym - so knowing all that and yet being lifted like he weighs less than a paper bag has him all sorts of hot and bothered.
No wonder they put him into radiology.
"What happened?" Lan Wangji asks as he presses a few buttons on the machine and carefully inspects Wei Wuxian's ankle as it whirrs to life. His touch is gentle, soft, and Wei Wuxian inadevertedly breaks into goosebumps as he watches the man's fingers all over his bruised skin.
Right, talk.
"I slipped on ice on my way to work, I didn't even notice it was there... I thought I could just power through it but like two hours later I could barely move at all so I had to come here..."
"Were you able to drive?"
"No..."
"Somebody must have brought you in, then?"
"No, I...walked."
Lan Wangji looks at him with narrowed eyes and Wei Wuxian can sense the disapproval in them. "No wonder it looks like this. I doubt it is fractured, and it looks more like a bad sprain, though you've decidedly made it worse by applying constant pressure on it."
Wei Wuxian blushes, embarrassed. "It was the quickest solution... I work pretty far away from here and an Uber would have emptied out my wallet completely, you know..."
Lan Wangji clicks his teeth in disapproval. "I'll have to put you in a cast because of this, so I hope it was worth it."
"How mean..." Wei Wuxian whines, "I'm already in pain, I don't need a scolding too..."
"Your health comes above saving money, above everything. You can make more money later, but if you damage your body irreversibly, no amount of money can fix it."
Lan Wangji carefully reaches to adjust Wei Wuxian's foot over the blinking light of the machine. He yelps at the pain that shoots through him out of nowhere, and Lan Wangji apologizes quietly.
"I apologize, but you are going to have to take it for a bit, I know it hurts."
Wei Wuxian is absolutely not going to look for a double entendre in there and he's not going to think horny thoughts about where else he'd like to be told those words.
"Try to stay still, I won't be longer than a few minutes."
Wei Wuxian hopes that's only true for the X-Ray and nothing else, it would be such a shame if...
He's left alone in the room seconds later, and the X-Ray machine buzzes a few times as Wei Wuxian does his best to stay still and not have to hold that position for much longer. As much as he likes being around the hot radiologist, his ankle seems to have decided it hates him more than before and it hurts terribly now.
Luckily for him, the procedure is over just as he feels like he'll die if he doesn't move.
Lan Wangji returns from the control room and helps him back into the wheelchair, Wei Wuxian too distracted with his fantasies to try not to stare.
"As I suspected, it's not a fracture. The orthopedic tech is currently unavailable, so I will put you in a cast and prescribe you painkillers. You will need them."
"I need them even now..." Wei Wuxian mumbles, "I think my ankle did not like that X-Ray at all."
"I will have something administered for you." And, on the walk out, he shouts out after the nurse, "Su Minshan, bring 500 mg of Naproxene to my office and my prescription notebook, please."
There is some sort of affirmative response from an office - more like a grunt of approval followed by incomprehensive words -, and Wei Wuxian realizes that's his nurse.
"Someone's definitely not having a good day today, huh..."
"Mn. He's going to be transferred to another hospital soon and he is being especially... unpleasant because of it."
"Disciplinary action?"
"Partly. I apologize on his behalf for his behavior."
A laugh. "That's alright, he wasn't that bad, I just felt a bit like in a medical 'Fast and furious' on my way here."
Lan Wangji laughs in turn, and Wei Wuxian is pretty sure his heart skipped a beat or two at the sound. Wow.
They arrive at the end of the hallway and enter an office where several tools and buckets lay next to a bed, a desk and two file cabinets in the opposite corner. Su Minshan shows up shortly after, a sour expression on his face as he brings what was asked of him before storming out.
Wei Wuxian gratefully takes the painkiller after Lan Wangji helped him onto the bed and lifted the leg of his jeans all the way to his knee. He bites his tongue not to make a dirty comment about just taking off his pants entirely.
"Have you ever had a cast before?"
"Surprisingly enough, no! This is my first time."
"You will have to have it on for two weeks. You are likely going to be in pain for only two or three days at most, but I will prescribe you enough pills for a week in case you need them for more."
Lan Wangji brings in a bucket of water and lays down a few towels onto the floor as he proceeds to wash off Wei Wuxian's foot. This shouldn't feel as intimate as it is - and yet, Wei Wuxian is trying so hard not to blush or react in any way at the gentle touches and the careful handling.
"You might get some itching or numbness due to immobility, but no matter what, do not attempt to remove your cast or move your foot inside of it. You will only prolong healing if you do."
Wei Wuxian watches, fascinated, as the man covers his leg in bandages, and then into the white substance that's slowly hardening into his cast. Lan Wangji works with precision, betraying habit, and the focused expression on his features suits him all too well. Is it a breach of any laws if Wei Wuxian were to ask for his number right now?
"Do not attempt to walk with your cast on for the same reason, either. Until you'll have it removed, you should primarily be on bed rest."
The cast is almost finished now, so Lan Wangji goes to wash his hands and sits at the desk to write the prescription and whatever else. Wei Wuxian loves to watch him, and he hopes he doesn't come off as creepy.
"After the cast is off, depending on the look of the sprain and whether you are still in pain, you may be referred to a physical rehabilitation center. Any questions?"
"No, it's all clear, thank you."
"Let me help you out, then."
Wei Wuxian feels like a whole wuss. A coward. He didn't even try to shoot his shot, just sat there staring and said nothing at all! Now he's probably never getting the chance to do it - the odds of returning on the same shift are infinitesimally low... so to hell with Wei Wuxian's luck in love.
Not that he ever expected someone like Lan Wangji to say yes, but still.
Lan Wangji brings him to the parking lot, and Wei Wuxian expects him to say goodbye, leave and mind his business, their fates never crossing again.
However, Lan Wangji pulls out his phone and hands it to Wei Wuxian. "Please order a ride for yourself."
"W-What? No, I- you really don't have to! I can handle it!"
"I am offering, so please do not refuse."
"I appreciate it, but I don't-"
"It's not out of pity. As your doctor, it is my duty to ensure you can start your healing journey properly, and this is part of it."
Wei Wuxian opens his mouth to argue but decides against it. What can he even say? He's not in the position to refuse help, after all, but... he's never heard of a doctor to do something like this for a patient...
"Thank you... I can pay you back in a week or so, when I get-"
"No need."
Of course not, Wei Wuxian thinks to himself, what's an Uber ride to a doctor's salary...
An ambulance whirrs past them and Lan Wangji sees someone in the back wave him to follow.
"I must go, there's an emergency."
"Right, thank you for everything again, and good luck!"
Lan Wangji nods briskly and runs after the ambulance, disappearing into the hospital building.
Wei Wuxian really wishes he's said something, but it's too late now. He decides to look at his medical documents as he waits for the car, distracting himself from his thoughts.
But a smile breaks out on his face as he finds a little post-it note attached to his prescription. It's a phone number, with "See you once you're better?" written in beautiful calligraphy at the end.
If he wasn't immobile right now, he'd jump for joy.

I know this is not the case, but sometimes I like to imagine the CQL costuming on novelverse to make WWX's Zixuan hate even funnier, because CQL!Zixuan actually dresses fairly simply? He has exactly one hair piece until he gets married which is just a ponytail, his embroidery isn't super fancy and detailed, yeah he has swishy sleeves sometimes but not always and he has NOTHING on the Lan who wwx praises for being less istentatious. Very funny saying that about their 40 pound hairpieces
YES!! WWX's Zixuan hatred gets funnier by the DAY, I swear. JZX isn't dressed any fancier than his half-brother is after he's legitimized, and that's... actually kind of a problem, narratively. Like the whole point there is that JGY noticeably doesn't have full Jin status, and yet the only difference between them is that JGY's the only one in all of Lanling who wears a hat. Maybe it's a situation where like, JZX is so high-status that he can choose to dress simply without anyone commenting (except WWX, who will call him a snob regardless), whereas JGY has to dress formally to be taken seriously? Or is JGY overdressed, in which case shouldn't there be some comments about that because he's either putting on airs or trying too hard?
also LMAO THE LAN BEING LESS OSTENTATIOUS. Lan Xichen has a flute made of white jade and silver dragon antlers on his head for casual wear, and one of their core colors requires CONSTANT laundering and/or a vast wardrobe, but sure, sure, they're a very understated sect.

On the Aesthetic tastes of our Demonic Grandmaster Twink
Or WWX repeatedly gets mistaken for being both Luo Binghe and Crimson Rain Sought Flower on many separate occasions.
WWX isn't sure what to think of being repeatedly mistaken for a Demon Emperor or a Calamity.
Didn't know whether the requester wanted Yiling Laozu WWX or post-canon WWX so I went with Yiling Laozu WWX. (I'm pretty sure this is what you wanted but just send me another ask if it's not.)
Also uhh, not entirely sure what was expected of me, like whether this was a canon divergence and/or if you wanted interactions with Luo Binghe and San Lang. So I just went with WWX being generally confused on whether to be flattered or not at the comparison and ripping his hair out over his limited wardrobe options lol.
______________________________________________________
Wei Wuxian's hair was always wavier nowadays. Not that he couldn’t help it. He was too busy trying to keep himself afloat to care about how his hair looked. And though it only caused some minor inconveniences - such as being a rat's nest to comb through in the mornings - it really never was a cause for worry.
Well. At least until that day.
.
.
.
That day was the same as any other day. He had been wandering through a town, his hair up in a ponytail due to the heat and had been idly minding his business when someone seemed to double take at him and say, “My lord?”
Wei Wuxian blinked. The two people in front of him had a strange....inhuman aura. Due to his sensitivity to resentful energy, he focused a bit more and realized that the two in front of him were disguised demons! No human had that amount of resentful energy - if you exclude Wei Wuxian himself.
“Umm, no. Sorry, you must have mistaken me for someone.” Wei Wuxian tensed up. Intelligent demons were no longer hostile to humans, due to their king making some sort of deal but one could never be too careful when dealing with their kind.
“Huh. You possess a similar amount of demonic energy as our lord, so I assumed you might be him. Hearing you now, I suppose you’re not.”
Wei Wuxian looked at them. “Your....lord? You mean, the demon emperor. Luo Binghe?”
“Yeah. Our lord is half-human so it’s not like we mistook you for nothing. But, how interesting......you seem to be fully human, yet possess an incredible amount of demonic energy......”
“Uhh....thank you?”
“Mm.” The talkative demon’s partner nudged him. “Oh, we have to go now. Bye.”
“Bye.” Wei Wuxian shrugged off the strange interaction within a few days.
However.....
Wei Wuxian had been lounging around the Burial Mounds after being banned from doing any work (due to his worsening condition). He was also in a terrible mood, eyes flashing red as he muttered curses to himself.
"Wow,they really weren't joking. You really do look like A-Luo!" A somewhat sprightly woman look him up and down and Wei Wuxian paused in his mumblings.
"......What?"
"Ah! How cute! You even sound alike when you're grumpy! Ah, if only I had a way to show this sight to A-Luo and Shizun......maybe I can bring them here!"
"What."
"Oh, my name is Ning Yingying by the way. Nice to meet you, whoever you are!"
Someone else appeared by here side, tugging her away, "Ning-shijie, Shizun is calling for you."
"Ah, I'll be there. It's too bad that I have to go. See you later!" And in a blink of an eye, they were gone.
"........What on earth happened just now?"
He went back to moping around until Wen Qing found him and practically tossed A' Yuan at him to improve his mood.
His mood did indeed improve.
.
.
Wei Wuxian kept on being mistaken as Luo Binghe and it was getting kind of annoying. After conversing with the demons and discovering that their lord favored the colors he wore and often wore his wavy hair up in a high ponytail, Wei Wuxian wore his hair down. He couldn't quite change his clothes though since black was cheap and other colors were not.
Little did he know that this was not the end.
............................
Wei Wuxian shook his head, trying to clear his mind from the myriad of voices haunting him. It had been a few months since he moved to the Burial Mounds with the Wen remnants and he had been all too busy trying to come up with ways to help them survive. Too busy, in fact, that he didn’t notice the way many ghosts and resentful spirits alike took a double take at him when he wandered around his cave in his red inner robes.
Eventually, though, as their situation cleared up, Wei Wuxian began to concentrate on what the ghosts were saying as he wanted to know why they kept on bugging him.
“He really looks like him, right?”
“Yeah. I mean, if we disregard the fact that he’s human, then of course!”
“Uhh, excuse me, what do you mean by that?” Wei Wuxian asked as many other ghosts echoed their sentiment.
“Oh! Uh, Young master Wei, it’s just, when you’re dressed in all red like that and have your hair covering one side of your face, you just....you really remind us of Crimson Rain Sought Flower!”
Wei Wuxian didn’t know what to say to that. “Should I....take that as a compliment?” He didn’t know how he felt about being compared to first a demon lord and now a Calamity-level ghost!
“Oh, of course you should!  Crimson Rain Sought Flower is quite handsome, you know! If he weren’t married, all of the ladies and gents would have tried for his hand. Not that his married status makes anyone try less. Although, some of us are kinda terrified of him.....”
”Uh.....huh.....” Should I.....just stopping dressing in black and red?
"You'd be better off not being a demonic cultivator, Young Master Wei!" A spirit called cheerfully. “Your resentful energy content is so high that most do end up mistaking you for a calamity or a demon. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if you became one of those after you die!”
Wei Wuxian sighed.
_______________________________________
Yeah....that’s all I got for now. If you would like me to write more on this, perhaps WWX becoming a calamity, just shoot me an ask or message me!
Hope this was good enough. I’ve not been on my top game recently.

Spent the afternoon filling a prompt for wwxfans prompt fest from @/dragongirlg-fics asking for young wwx being obsessed with the texture of the clothes he gets to wear now that he's a part of the Jiang Sect.
If you'd like to leave a prompt or fill a prompt, please visit the prompt fest over on dreamwidth. You don't have to join dreamwidth or the comm for this event.
This got a little away from me, but I really enjoyed the prompt and got in my feels about wwx and clothes and also wwx sharing clothes. This is mostly wwx with jc & jyl, but with a bit of post-canon wangxian at the end.
T+ for a bit of suggestiveness
cw: references to wwx's upbringing prior to coming to Lotus Pier
"What are you doing?" Jiang Cheng asks, brows furrowed while shijie frowns at him. She admonishes him with a quiet, "A-Cheng, shush," and smiles at Wei Ying, brighter than the sunshine sparkling off the water. She asks, gesturing at his wrists, "Do you like them?"
"What do I like?"
Her eyes twinkle. "Your robes."
Before Wei Ying can answer, Jiang Cheng says, "They're my old robes."
"Just until Wei Ying's are finished," shijie says, like this is such an awkward thing, but Wei Ying truly doesn't mind. Even if they were not his first, it's been made clear they are his now and they're nice, so much nicer than what he wore before. Besides, he kind of likes that they were Jiang Cheng's first. It just means they've been well-cared for and can maybe care for Wei Ying in return.
Wei Ying, caught, tucks his hands behind his back and grins back. Here, the boldness of such an expression doesn't find him getting chased off the street and into a stinking, dirty alley, shadowed even at midday. He is still getting used to it, the way he need only fear the near impotent shouts of one person, so much less stressful than anything he experienced before. If he's punished here, at least he won't be made to leave the shelter of Lotus Pier. He would suffer anything to avoid such a state again. "They're fine," he mumbles.
And truly, he does not suffer here at all. As shijie leads the two of them to the docks, he can't say he remembers ever being happier.
In fact...
"Oh, they're fine. Something's got to be wrong with them. You keep touching them," Jiang Cheng says, accusatory and suspicious as he crosses his arms and blocks Wei Ying's way. "Is there something wrong with them?" Wei Ying can almost see Jiang Cheng's pride ruffling itself at the thought that Wei Ying might think there's anything wrong. "You have something against them?"
Wei Ying's skin flushes. His carefully brushed and tidied hair tickles at his cheeks as he shakes his head, startling him. Always before, it stuck to his skin, lank and heavy. He's not yet used to wearing it in a ponytail. He's not yet used to any of this. "No. Nothing's wrong. They're great."
"Your belt is crooked." The trouble with his belt is it's too big, but nothing can fix that overnight, not with how thin he is.
Drawing in a deep breath, Wei Ying scrambles to fix--
There's nothing wrong with his belt, but it's too late to hide his hands again; Jiang Cheng's already snatching hold of his wrist and dragging him forward.
"A-Cheng!" shijie says again, voice gently exasperated. "Enough. Let A-Ying go."
"Tsch." Jiang Cheng's mouth pinches in a scowl. "They're fine. Why are you being so weird?"
"I'm not," Wei Ying insists. He yanks his hand out of Jiang Cheng's hold and pets the fabric wrapped around his arm. Unlike what he wore before, it's soft and smooth and smells nice. He likes touching it, likes that it shines under the sunlight and that the weave is so tiny that he can't pick and pick at the threads until the fabric frays, likes that it keeps him cool and swishes around his legs and is such deep, rich colors. When winter comes, he's certain he'll like whatever is provided for him then, too. It will protect him from the cold and the sleety rain that sometimes falls or keep him warm and dry or both. "I said they were fine."
Jiang Cheng's clearly not convinced. He plants his hands on his hips and arches one eyebrow. "You're a disciple of Yunmeng Jiang now. You can't walk around acting like a baby who doesn't know how to wear clothes."
"I know that."
"A-Ying, you're not a baby." Shijie's not that much taller than him, but she bends a little to meet him eye-to-eye and tugs on his clothing, settling the seams over his shoulders, smoothing the sleeves, lingering on the hems as Wei Ying's done. "A-Cheng, A-Ying is still adjusting."
Wei Ying bites his lower lip to keep it from wobbling. He's not the type to cry, has never been that way, but his eyes prickle anyway. Jiang Cheng's right. This behavior isn't worthy of the chance he's been given. He owes Uncle Jiang so much and the last thing in the world he wants is to embarrass Madam Yu.
"Tell me," shijie says.
"It feels nice," he admits, running his thumb over the fabric one last time. "I never..."
Her smile gentles, drawing the answer from him like so much poison.
"I've never worn anything this nice before," Wei Ying says. "That's all." Shijie's right. He's not used to any of this. It's almost a compulsion, his need to stroke the fabric. It's so soft and comfortable compared to what he wore before. How could he not want to touch it as often as possible? It's lucky Jiang Cheng hasn't noticed the way he sometimes presses his face to it after he's washed up and changed into his night clothes.
He should... not do that anymore. Jiang Cheng is right. It's unbecoming.
Squaring his shoulders, he looks at Jiang Cheng and then at shijie. He can't find the right words, but he promises that he won't make things difficult. If pretending he doesn't care about what he's wearing is what he needs to do, he will.
For the most part, he succeeds in hiding his preoccupation, though it never fully goes away. Even into adulthood, he rarely pays much attention to the different sensation different sets of robes make him feel.
The second time he's caught, it's because he's slipped into one of his husband's inner robes after, well... after, audaciously nude beneath the silken fabric, not even his trousers separating him from the tender brush of fabric over his heated skin, and Lan Zhan is watching him placidly from the bed as he gasps in quiet, simple pleasure. Though a frisson of shame bubbles up from within him--will he ever fully leave his past behind him and the memory of coarse, itchy rags that barely covered his body appropriately--he shoves it down and tells himself it would be more improper to retrieve a cloth without any clothes on at all.
"Don't look at me, shameless man," Wei Wuxian says as he clutches the robes closed. He is teasing, of course, and he is not. Next time, he'll keep his own close at hand, save himself the trouble.
"Why not?" Lan Zhan asked, teasing him right back.
He doesn't have it in him to explain, but when he can bring himself to meet Lan Zhan's eyes, there is no request for one there, only the same simple joy Wei Wuxian had felt in donning Lan Zhan's clothes to begin with. There is no one in this room he needs to impress, no one who will look down on him for enjoying something that everyone around him can and does take for granted.
"Because," is all he says.
Within a few days, Lan Zhan's ordered sets of robes for him in fabrics that more closely align the ones the Lan Sect sources, all in the shades Wei Wuxian favors, of course, but just as luxurious. All Lan Zhan says on the matter once they're properly put away is, "I should have considered the matter sooner."
On occasion, he still chooses to wear his husband's things.
Ever since he was small, he's always rather liked it, sharing such things with those he cares about.

CQL/MDZS Prequel 1b: Mo Xuanyu, the Sacrifice
Who is this? Where am I? When did I do something as immoral as stealing another’s body? Wei WuXian stared dizzily at the strange environment and the mess on the ground.... Wei WuXian looked in a mirror, only to see a ghastly pale face, with two asymmetrical piles of red on each side of his cheek. Add a blood-red tongue onto the features, and he would look like a hanged ghost. He tossed the mirror to the side and wiped his face, finding his hand covered in a white powder.... How unbearable! He finally sat up, noticing the circular array beneath him. The array was scarlet in color and crooked in shape, appearing to have been drawn by hand, using blood as a medium, still damp and emitting a strong scent. The array was filled with warped scribbled incantations, which were somewhat smudged by his body, but came across as gruesome nonetheless. After all, Wei WuXian was known as the Supreme Leader and the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, so he was most certainly accustomed to vile-looking arrays such as this one. It turned out that, in fact, he did not seize the body of another—he was offered one. It was an ancient, forbidden technique...to summon an extremely villainous ghoul and ask for it to complete their wish. The price to pay was to offer their body to the evil spirit.... Without exception, the people’s wishes were the same—to take revenge. If he didn’t fulfil the wish of the body’s owner...and if the time limit ended, both his soul and this body would be ripped apart. Wei WuXian confirmed his situation several times, repeating, “How can this happen to me?...”
-- Mo Dao Zu Shi (novel), Chapter 2
MY THOUGHTS
Happy birthday, Wei WuXian! ❤️👻🎵💀🎶😈
I decided to blend how the donghua & novel did it, with WWX being reincarnated in Mo Xuanyu’s body (makeup, ponytail and all)
Tumblr media
and the live action, where he wakes up in his own body and has to wear the mask so no one recognizes him.
Tumblr media
Even though EVERYONE effing knew who he was, like who TF else was walking around dressed in all black playing magic flutes waking the dead and hanging around Lan Wangji and Wen Ning FFS, you moron?

(Sorta inspired by the earlier ask you got--hope you don't mind another!)
How do you decide how to draw modern versions of the Untamed characters? They're so good. I especially love that Xichen's still got extremely long hair and Huaisang's wardrobe choices. (And, like, all of them, that's just two details that stand out).
ah gosh! hmmm, honestly the short and not especially exciting answer is that I mostly go off The Vibes? I suppose I try to translate each character's personality into a modern setting and then work from that basis to decide what they'd do with their clothes and hair.
for example - Meng Yao/JGY is very concerned about looking presentable and appearing professional, so most of the time he will be wearing smart casual clothes, and when he gets money he wears exclusively tailored stuff. he feels very anxious about looking anything less than his best in public, and he'll only slob about in less flattering clothes or loungwear when he's at home with just his boys. WWX, on the other hand, has a very strong individualistic personality and a rebellious streak, so he doesn't care much about what other people think about what he wears so long as it fits his aesthetic and makes him look hot!
as I said, canon has really helpfully colour-coded everyone, and I've tried to stick to that in the modern AU as much as I can, and then with things like haircuts... honestly, a lot of it is trying things out and deciding whether they still look like themselves - Xichen has long hair partly because I love it, partly because he just doesn't feel recognisable without it 😆 and you may have noticed there was a vERY brief time early on where NMJ didn't have a moustache, before I decided he just didn't look right. the actors' looks themselves also have had a fair bit of influence over my designs (ZZJ with his cutie side fringe and yellow pattern button-up with tight black skinny jeans is basically my JGY template now, and Ji Li has been a godsend for reference wearing his shoulder length hair up on a lil ponytail 🙌), as well as the Sims, which has helped me build up little wardrobes for all my faves!
credit is also due to @ellethinthewoods, who, when I first started on my modern AU and expressed concern about my lack of fashion knowledge, put together fashion aesthetic pinterest boards for me for each clan, and gave me a really good starting point and lots of inspiration!

For the WIP Tag Game, tell us about that XY/JC AU you got going? 🙏
hiya, thanks for the ask 💜💜 this AU is my baby it’s about 8 months old I’m obsessed w it and that’s partly why it’s so unfinished lmao
so it’s a modern AU that follows the beats of canon plot, and every cultivation sect is now a company. Shit happens and JC decides to make questionable decisions and sleep with XY. To make it extra fun for me personally, JC in this verse is on the aroace spectrum, but hasn’t really figured this out about himself yet, so he’s like “maybe casual sex isn’t for me”, “maybe if it’s someone I like it’d be better”, etc. So this continues on and escalates, because XY is a) mostly here to see how far he can push JC and b) also has ulterior, benefactor flavoured motives. Fast forward to the present day of the fic, which is about ~3 years after the Jiang parents die, and WWX returns but so does XY 😌
so the fic is like. 3/4 business intrigue 1/4 dub-con smut 🤣 I just really wanted to see JC in a relationship that's unhealthy for him while projecting my aroace questioning onto him, so he’s going to suffer nicely if I ever get this thing written
Mini snippet:
He’d snapped tonight, and had grabbed a jacket and decided to stroll downtown instead of taking a car. He hadn’t planned on doing anything except just get out of the house, forget who he was and everything that depended on him. He hadn’t wanted to think about the upcoming launch of the Golden Core project, which the entire company is relying upon. This bar isn’t the sort that even Nie Huaisang had taken them to. Jiang Cheng doesn’t know why he chose this one, of all the bars and clubs on the way here, but he doesn’t particularly care where he is as long as he doesn’t have to sit in the quiet. He doesn’t know how long he’s been there when someone flings themselves into the seat right beside him. Jiang Cheng barely glances their way, but when his eyes fall on the other man, his heart stops in his chest. Long hair pulled back in a ponytail, tied off with a maroon ribbon. He almost goes to say Wei Ying? before his mind takes in the rest of him. Black leather jacket, biker gloves on the hand he can see. And when he turns a little, to call over the bartender, Jiang Cheng can see that his face isn’t quite like Wei Ying’s, cheekbones placed differently, jawline softer and face rounder. The moment of hope costs him, and he takes a hearty gulp of his drink, holding on to the way it burns going down. The man next to him sees it and laughs. “Hope that wasn’t because of me,” he says, and his tone is exactly the same as how Wei Ying used to sound trying teasing Jiang Cheng out of his black moods.

Wei Wuxian is as shameless as ever and this annoys a couple people. One of those annoyed at his behaviour is a bit of a loudmouth, but Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang clear things up pretty quickly.

I’ll finish this then head out, Nie Mingjue thought. It was late enough now that Huaisang wouldn’t scold him for being a party pooper— Nie Mingjue grunted as someone crashed into his arm, and put his glass down carefully.
“Oh! Oh, I’m so sorry!” He looked up to see who had knocked into him, and stared. Wide golden eyes checked over Nie Mingjue worriedly, and Nie Mingjue started as a gentle hand touched his forearm. “Are you okay? Did I spill your drink?”

the warm circle of arms, by Deastar
Wei Ying is leaning against Lan Wangji’s side, back to the rock wall of the cave, shivering so viciously that it woke Lan Wangji from his exhausted sleep. He inspects the situation and finds that Wei Ying has stripped off everything but his underclothes and draped the rest over Lan Wangji, as if he doesn’t care whether he himself freezes to death. Unacceptable.
He prods Wei Ying awake; further prods him to lie on his side; then lies behind him, nested like spoons, and arranges their robes to lie over both of them.
“L’ Zh’n?” Wei Ying mumbles.
“Wei Ying should be warm,” Lan Wangji says firmly.

“You fake your orgasms,” Lan Zhan repeated.
“Yes!” Wei Ying threw up her arms. “Fine. I fake my orgasms. You don’t get it. I have ADHD, right? I can’t concentrate on anything, I can’t even concentrate on jerking off. I didn’t figure out how to come until I was twenty-two and it’s not for lack of trying. I have to have really hot porn and a high-powered vibrator and noise-canceling headphones and the music up loud enough that there aren’t any random sounds to distract me–”
Lan Zhan blinked. “Wei Ying can wear noise-canceling headphones during sex.”
“You don’t understand,” Wei Ying said. “You’re so goddamn nice to me. People aren’t that nice to me. I’m not the kind of girl that guys take to restaurants. I’m the kind of girl that gets invited over to watch a movie and then I have the guy’s dick in my mouth by ten minutes in.”

The cheerleader, a boy, had a cheeky smile on his lips. Long legs. Luscious thighs. A voluminous ass that was barely covered by the fabric of his uniform’s skirt. He also had a long ponytail of black hair tied with a red scrunchie.

“Lan Zhan, come here,” Wei Ying murmurs. He’s fumbling at Lan Wangji’s clothes too, at the intricate tangle of knots on his belt, the ties that hold his garments together. “Let’s get you naked as well — I want to see —”
Lan Wangji flinches.

With the hangings parted, the moonlight shone in a shard of cold white against the sheets, broken only by moonshadows cast by the bamboo grove outside the window. These shadows cast themselves upon the silver-burnished skin of Lan Wangji’s back, light and dark shades of grey and black colouring the contours of pale skin, muscle and scar. Mouth open slightly, Wei Wuxian found himself reaching out towards those lines, tracing with wondering fingers the interlacing tangents of branch, leaf and scar. The pointed foliage, narrow and elegantly spaced along the thin stems, almost looked as if it was emerging from Lan Wangji’s skin itself, artful foliage camouflaging the trauma carved into his back.

Youth Is Sweet and They Are Growing, by Glitterbombshell (5th in a series)
It is not the first discussion conference that has been held since Jin Guangyao’s downfall, but it is the largest so far. And the first one since Wei Wuxian officially started teaching the Lan clan’s novices. In an effort to encourage inter-sect alliances and friendships among even the youngest disciples,a series of friendly skill demonstrations and competitions are held, with events for all ages to participate in. To the surprise of literally no one, the Jin sect children seem to come out of the womb puffed up on pride and thinking they’re at least a little bit better than everyone. Their novice disciples are no exception. The Jin novices’ first mistake was underestimating the Lan class because most of them are a few years younger than them.
Their worst mistake was making disparaging remarks about their beloved Master Wei where Lan Xin could hear them.

The manual was long, but it all boiled down to the same thing-- assess, capture, banish, assess, repeat. Keep the affected area to a minimum. Be proactive in protecting any device that can access the internet. Physical storage areas with names had to be up to standard (file boxes were allowed, so long as the lid was reinforced and could stand up to the particular talisman used), but anything else usually required paperwork and approval, even if it was retroactive. Wangji hoped everything was in file boxes this time, even though he knew it was in vain. None of his storage solutions had ever been declined, but it was a tremendous amount of paperwork, picture taking, and documentation for what was usually a relatively small collection. In this case, it was less likely to be true, and the documentation was likely to be equal to the names warded and sealed. He appreciated that.

Every single night the guqin echoed into the Cloud Recess’ clear atmosphere, breaking the curfew. Within the last three years, be it the height of midsummer nights’ heat or the coldest winter nights, Lan Wangji’s guqin would squeeze the hearts of those who could not sleep. It kept the light-sleeping elders awake, and the old people would curse the Sect Heir in the dark, failing to understand the Sect Leader’s indulgence for his younger brother. It kept Lan Qiren awake, fueling his guilt: night after night the old man painfully realized how pointless the near-death punishment he had inflicted on his nephew had been. It kept Lan Xichen awake, helpless to soothe his brother. Often, the Sect Leader would rise to meet the musician inside the Jingshi, or near the waterfall where Lan Wangji would try to hide at the end of a too-long day, shoulders bowed by the weight of the elder’s look. Get it right (this time), by AmiraAlzilu
Death would be a fate too kind for Wei Wuxian. He should pay for every sin he committed.
At least that’s the only explanation he has for this impossible situation. After falling from the cliff he woke up in his 15 year old body, just before his months of study at Cloud Recesses.
So, thinking it was for the best, he decides to disappear when he was supposed to be searching for their lost invitation.
Little does he know someone else came back in time with him.
Oh No Not Again, by SuperiorJello
Similar to my other fic Reset, this fic starts with things going horribly wrong at Guanyin Temple and Wei Wuxian dying. Again. In this fic, however, he wakes up back at the start of his new life as Mo Xuanyu. So he's only got to speedrun the last couple months' adventures to get all caught up with the world again.
And this time, he knows that Lan Wangji loves him. And he's aware that he loves him back.
This fic is a lot closer to MDZS canon than CQL, fair warning. There's probably some crossover there because it's all so muddled in my head, but the novel is the most recent form I've consumed the story in and the one I'm TRYING to follow for this, so here's hoping y'all like it!

With the help of his Shixiong, Xiao Xingchen and his "friend" Song Lan, Wei Wuxian will try to overcome the challenge that staying at Gusu is to him.
But what if Lan Wangji was more interested in him than what meets the eye?

Can I give you 2 prompts for wangxian fics? 1: meddling Xichen (to ship) + jealous lwj + oblivious wwx and 2: kissing practice + childhood friends + caught red handed by lan qiren. Thank you so much! I love your modern au fics.
I am relatively sure that this is NOT what you wanted, but you know, something something beggars something. ;) Once it had been planted in my mind, I had to do it.
---
Lan Wangji was aware that due to his distant nature and his courtesy name, some people falsely assumed that he was blind to all worldly concerns around him.
This was, however, a completely wrong conclusion. He was very much aware of what was happening around him. Just as much as he was aware that this supposed ‘conference’ that they were all attending was little more than a shoddily hidden marriage market.
Which would have been fine, it was not like Lan Wangji did not see the necessity to build stronger ties between the sects. It was not his place to judge such things, and, after all, marriage was a necessity to sustain a stable society. He might not approve of the vulgarity of some of the participants of this conference, but he did not deny the necessity of such an event, however impractical and distasteful it might be to him, personally.
However.
Why Lan Xichen, his own brother, seemed to have made a very strong connection with Wei Wuxian at this conference, was completely beyond him.
Out of all possible matches, Lan Xichen seemed to favour Wei Wuxian over anyone else!
Lan Wangji was unable to make sense of it, no matter how long he considered the case before him.
A marriage between them would not only be questionable in terms of inter-sect politics, he also doubted that their wildly different personalities would be a good foundation for a successful marriage. Lan Xichen should be perfectly aware of these things, and yet, he seemed to prefer Wei Wuxian’s company to that of anyone else.
And Wei Wuxian… Lan Wangji did not want to make unfounded assumptions, but aiming for a sect leader seemed to be reaching very high for someone in his position. Especially when there were other suitable matches to be made that were much closer to his own age and status. Such an attempt was sure to incur the displeasure of all other major sects, and several minor ones, too.
He considered bringing the evils of such an unsuitable match to his brother’s attention, but he did not want to hurt his brother’s feelings, and Lan Wangji knew that no matter how carefully he chose his words, they would end up sounding petty and biased.
His brother knew very well how he felt about Wei Wuxian. He had been a witness to more than one fight between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, and yet he seemed to have decided on Wei Wuxian without hesitation. None of Lan Wangji’s words would be able to change his choice now, he was sure.
It was just.
The thought of having someone like Wei Wuxian as his brother-in-law was unbearable. Loud and obnoxious and infuriating, how could his brother bear the presence of a person like that? And even worse, bring such a person to Cloud Recesses?
Perhaps, after the marriage, Lan Wangji would be allowed to go into seclusion for a while, in order to work on his cultivation in silence and contemplation. Once Wei Wuxian was installed at Cloud Recesses, there would be an end to all peace, that he was sure of.
He tried to make peace with that thought, and redoubled his own efforts to evade all the potential marriage partners and their families that seemed to have set their sight on him. As the second son of a prestigious sect, he had proven to be rather more popular on a marriage market like this than he had wished for, and by now, he sincerely regretted letting his brother convince him to accompany him to this sham of a conference.
He was determined not to accidentally fall into an engagement, and planned to leave the conference as the same staunch bachelor he had been before.
“Lan Zhan!” came the loud voice that Lan Wangji would have preferred not to hear right now, or ever again.
One moment later, Wei Wuxian bumped into his shoulder.
“Ayoo,” he said once he had glanced into Lan Wangji’s face. “Someone is grumpy today. Are you getting tired of being hounded by pretty girls? You should be happy! You can pick any girl you like, they’re basically throwing themselves at your feet!”
If Lan Wangji had less self-possession, he might have felt tempted to strangle Wei Wuxian right there and then. Alas, he was in control of his emotions, and so he only levelled Wei Wuxian with a disapproving glare.
He did not want anyone to throw themselves at your feet. He did not want to get married. He did not care for pretty girls.
Wei Wuxian seemed to take his quelling glare as encouragement, and laughed heartily.
“I see, Hanguang-jun does not approve!” he teased. “There is no one good enough for Lan Zhan, after all!”
Lan Wangji wondered about that particular remark, because Wei Wuxian obviously believed himself to be good enough for Lan Xichen, who arguably was above Lan Wangji in dignity and respect. Lan Wangji was only the second son.
But perhaps Wei Wuxian was teasing him, alluding to his taciturn and forbidding nature. That made more sense. After all, Lan Wangji’s brother was the more friendly and approachable one between the two of them, no competition at all.
It needed far more than a gentle smile to impress Lan Wangji.
Wei Wuxian rambled on about all the dramatic scenes he had witnessed during the conference, the little jealousies that had been happening among those that were looking for a marriage partner in order to secure the status of their sect.
Lan Wangji did not really care about these things, but he let Wei Wuxian talk nonetheless, content to listen as long as he was not required to speak.
“Seriously though, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian ended his excursion. “You don’t have your eye on anyone? Come on, tell me! I’m not going to tattle! I’ll help you!”
That was precisely not what Lan Wangji wanted, and the last thing he needed was ‘help’ from Wei Wuxian, of all people. So he tightly closed his lips, and walked faster. Unfortunately, Wei Wuxian was almost as tall as him, and so he easily kept pace with Lan Wangji easily.
“Lan Zhaaaaan, come on, don’t be so stubborn,” Wei Wuxian pouted, swishing his ponytail back and forth in disappointment. “I’m trying to be supportive.”
“Wei Ying had better mind his own business,” Lan Wangji said curtly.
“Wei Ying has no business to mind,” Wei Wuxian whined, his pout growing impossibly more pronounced.
“What were you discussing with my brother, then?” Lan Wangji asked impatiently.
He regretted his words as soon as they had left his mouth.
“Oh, you saw that?” Wei Wuxian replied, perking up immediately. “Xichen-ge has been trying to convince me to come to Cloud Recesses again, to study some more or something. I wonder why he’s so insistent on it, I wasn’t that bad of a student, was I? I shouldn’t need special education!”
Lan Wangji looked at Wei Wuxian in surprise, but there was no impish glint in his eye, and no mischievous smile on his lips. Wei Wuxian was entirely serious.
“Brother asked you to come study at Cloud Recesses again?” Lan Wangji asked.
“Yeah,” Wei Wuxian agreed. “Though I’m not sure why he would ask. I feel Lan Qiren will have a qi deviation if I visit a second time.”
Lan Wangji needed a moment to process this new information.
Apparently, Lan Xichen had invited Wei Wuxian to Gusu. But there seemed to have been made no promise of marriage, or Wei Wuxian was expertly deceiving him on that account.
But there was no real reason for Wei Wuxian to be deceptive. On the contrary, Wei Wuxian would probably enjoy to lord an engagement to his brother of Lan Wangji with gusto.
Which meant that his brother had never made an offer. And yet, he had invited Wei Wuxian to Gusu.
He had invited Wei Wuxian to Gusu.
Deliberately.
Without making an offer of marriage.
Lan Wangji froze for a moment and gripped Bichen, considering.
He looked at Wei Wuxian, who looked back at him with a half-smile on his face, evidently confused about Lan Wangji’s strange reaction to his words.
Oh, it was starting to make sense now.
It was all clear.
He was going to have to commit fratricide.
“But, you know,” Wei Wuxian said, now smiling fully, clearly unaware of Lan Wangji’s dark, dark thoughts.
“If Lan Zhan asks me, I will come.”

What's your favorite and least favorite version of JC/WWX/Chengxian (novel, drama, donghua, etc.)?
ah man, that’s actually surprisingly difficult to answer when i really think about it cos like i like CQL the most as the source material, BUT i think the donghua/manhua are the best adaptations of MDZS overall.
chengxian: CQL for sure, it’s actually hilarious how chengxian-heavy it is like i know it’s not intentional, kings, but thanks regardless.
the fact that jiang cheng is the cuck pre time skip but lan wangji is the cuck post time skip? *ariana grande voice* that’s equality! jiang cheng & wei wuxian are the heart of the show for me, they have that star-crossed lovers energy with the universe tearing them apart. i mean golden core transfer/jiang cheng’s sacrifice? that’s some romeo & juliet shit. it’s the epitome of unconditional love. i also feel like, whereas in the other adaptations & novel itself - the resentment is very palpable, in CQL it’s there but it’s more like...an external force. jiang cheng & wei wuxian are entwined as the poison drips as if from jormungandr’s teeth. they’re one another’s blindspots & berserk buttons. makes me cocoloco.
manhua was doing well but it robbed us off the hug and i’m sad to announce no longer has rights. donghua’s adorable but could do with more chengxian moments. novel....hmmm the chengxian is good but it is also hardmode - the love and resentment are much more tangled into a delicious thorki flavour but  at the same time these characters have like....negative self awareness which can make up for a frustrating read at times.
wei wuxian: as much as i hate how defanged wwx is in cql i do LOVE xiao zhan’s wei wuxian. i feel like...what’s nerfed by censorship regarding plot he makes up with how multifaceted his wwx feels. i also feel like the loyalty to the sect vs personal loyalty is better done within his character in cql and the sacrifices he makes feel much more as made out of love than out of duty.
donghua/manhua are a close second. i just love his character design so much?? the titty out look? the high ponytail? no wonder he’s got an attitude. i love how carefree & happy go lucky he is in the flashback, the happy-go-lucky shixiong to his stick-so-far-up-his-arse shidi.
novel: i find his POV both frustrating and very very funny. him comparing every man he meets to jiang cheng is like...so fucking hysterical; ‘not to sound like a shidifucker but there are only two types of men - uglies who can’t hold a candle to my exceptionally handsome shidi and hotties marginally hotter than my exceptionally handsome shidi’
sadly i do find him really annoying a lot of the time, and i have to admit...he and lwj are kinda worth one another in the end. then again, a fair amount of that might be due to the translation since i find him less obnoxious in the russian version.
jiang cheng: look, not to sound like a wang zhuocheng simp but he gave me my fucking rights. he might dress like my soviet folk singer grandpa and a 80s mom that regularly chaperones school trips but who else does it like him?? wzc’s energy in every interview: i’m not implying wangxian divorce, all i’m saying is jiang cheng is in lotus pier waiting with open arms. and open le--*beep*. look his eyes might be poppin oot their sockets but i forgive him, this was his debut.
even though the narrative doesn’t side with him he’s strangely a thoroughly sympathetic character (imo)?; his strong sense of duty, his desperation to protect what’s left of his family at all costs, his relationship with jin ling (and the subsequent milfyness), his perceptiveness (he is the cassandra of cql!!!) and anger and isolation. his voyeuristic relationship with his loved ones.  he’s GROWN on me like a tumour (i was a lwj stannie at first....can ye believe???). best worst boi. also wang kai can’t cry for shit but he has an *insanely* sexy voice.
i love him in the manhua he’s so kyoooooot!! donghua’s good too, his voice actor sounds hot as hell fuckkk. if shidi not love interest why he sound like a sex-line operator? huh?
as for the novel? fheoiwrhiugue he’s a psycho but i find him fucking hilarious more often than not (*moans* he’s so pathetic....seriously call me), i do find most of the characters quite one dimensional tbh (and again veeery aware it’s probably the translation) but i think he’s, ironically, the most interesting character out of that bunch (besides wwx & jgy).

Y'all where are the NMJ and JC polyshippers at like can you imagine the kind of lovely fanart that we could have if more of us jumped on the bandwagon like
Mingjue in cord wrapped or ribbon wrapped braids instead of just the coils, or if it's one of the Jiang sibs doing his hair like small wrapped braids in his ponytail if you're leaning more towards donghua Mingjue
The wrapped braid style is something I remember seeing on both CQL Yanli and WWX but not on Jiang Cheng and I'm a bit sad about that tbh
Actually just like let Mingjue have hair ribbons too like I know that's WWX's kind of thing design wise but I feel like da-ge could rock it too? Like it can even be black or gray ffs but with subtle gold or bronze colored threads to catch the light depending on which design you prefer
But also like JC in the Qinghe Nie coiled style with specially commissioned floral hairpins sounds cool too... It's hard to imagine him in a color that isn't purple but I feel like properly reimagined it could work! Like the small hair ornaments that pin da-ge's braids to the sides in CQL do look floral to me, though it's hard for me to tell squinting at my phone but!! In an AU where Nie bros gift him smth, my bet is it's gonna be some kind of hair ornament I mean Huaisang gave MY one of his own... This is all in some kind of vague polyverse where no one gets betrayed and dies btw but I feel like JC could use a bit of love and affection in the form of somebody other than himself doing his hair for him
Also I know some people have done sect swaps for fanfic with Xicheng but I feel like doing it for MingCheng, NieLan, etc would be a really cool challenge tbh. Not just the writing of it but seeing what other ppl come up with would be so cool??

@baoshan-sanren ok so i was thinking about this all day since your meta ask and this is entirely your doing. please take responsibility.
cangse sanren, jiang fengmian, wei changze: the first junior trio to sweep into cloud recesses and give lqr such a gigantic headache that the mere sight of wei wuxian decades later makes him nearly qi deviate from the memory.
wei changze and jiang fengmian have essentially grown up together. they’re best friends and sworn brothers. there’s no bad blood here because, well, jiang fengmian has always been the next sect leader, he knows his own skills and can’t be bothered to brood about other people, and wei changze doesn’t care about politics. he’s happy to help the sect in whatever way it needs. he does his job well, doesn’t complain much (unless he’s griping at jfm to stop leaving all your fucking shit on the floor a-mian), and is happy to go on night hunts alongside jfm. he’s an average cultivator, more skilled at thrumming music than sword wielding, but he’s clever, fast, and above all, kind. he would never let anything happen to jfm. there’s some talk around him from too-nosy gossipers and a few uppity elders across the clans, but nobody really pays the brothers any mind. they’re kids after all.
they meet cangse sanren on a night hunt. her name already begets her reputation—a rogue cultivator, disciple to the famed immortal baoshan sanren. she’s beautiful, wickedly skilled, and curses so much that even the most vulgar of men and women on the field blush. they meet her while trying to take down a herd of soul-stealing demon beasts, and her sword stops a clawed paw from crushing jiang fengmian’s larynx. she takes one look at them afterward when they’re sweaty, soaked with acrid demon blood, and trying to catch their breaths, and promptly adopts them both as her own. she calls them fengfeng and a-ze, and anyone who has a problem with her boys will answer to cangse sanren’s fists.
by the time the trio make their way to gusu for lectures, their outrageous exploits are a well-known table story amongst all the other juniors of their generation. the trio comprised of the jiang heir, the jiang servant, and their rogue cultivator queen are said to have stolen all 40 hens from an affluent farmer once and redistributed them to smaller villages nearby that he had been forcing to pay an exorbitant fee for eggs. each stolen hen wore a curious talisman necklace that deterred the farmer from taking it back (only once did the man try to and he almost lost both eyes and a sensitive body part). they are extremely well-loved by all the civilians they have helped along the way—their night hunt skills are admired by many, and the reputation bodes well for yunmengjiang sect, so the elders leave jfm alone for hanging around with a rogue cultivator.
plus wei changze can apparently drink anyone under the table, and on the first night at cloud recesses, the trio gets half the junior class wasted (cangse tells wei changze drunkenly that he’s perfect to his immense embarrassment but she promptly forgets this the next day). with the trio at the center, cloud recesses become a constant whisper of jokes and giggles and midnight fishing escapades. every night lqr considers breaking the no alcohol in cloud recesses rule.
all in all cangse finds cloud recesses utterly stifling. she prefers to play in the cold streams and lounge on the mountains than sit in the hall listening to lqr drone on about gusulan’s most boring collection of rules. more often than not she gets herself thrown out by lqr for arguing against every tenet he lectures to be the epitome of righteous cultivation. no punishment phases her. she even manages to make handstands look obnoxiously like a rebellion. she is wild, carefree, unapologetically fierce, and jiang fengmian loves her. wei changze of course coos at him relentlessly about this.
one evening, the junior class are led out to night hunt with lqr, whose dictatorial and by-the-book handling of their offensive and defensive groups make cangse shake with frustration. her vocal complaining gets her relegated to a holding group, so she isn’t there when jiang fengmian and wei changze get attacked. it’s the screaming that runs cangse’s blood cold. when she arrives, the beasts are already subdued but jiang fengmian is barely conscious on the ground, bleeding from his entire right shoulder, and holding onto wei changze, who is too still and deathly pale, with a gaping wound in his chest. he had put himself in front of jiang fengmian.
cangse is livid, and it’s only the junior disciples who hold her back that stops her from lunging at lan qiren in the middle of the forest. she screams that his hypocrisy, ignorance, and three thousand bullshit gusulan rules will be the death of the cultivation world. she gets 250 beatings for her insolence. she takes them all with stony unflinching eyes that never move from lan qiren’s glare. afterward, she forgoes treatment and holds vigil at wei changze’s bedside for five days and four nights until he wakes up. she plays nursemaid, and he laughs at her terrible congee but finishes every bowl anyway. they smile at one another, and jiang fengmian knows four things.
first, he’s lost her.
second, he’s loved her since the moment he saw her, with her messy ponytail swept up by the wind and glowing with the electric blue of her carefree spirit.
third, her home is in the sky.
jiang fengmian tells wei changze the evening before lectures come to a close to leave with cangse. wei changze laughs, says a-mian having you been drinking without me, then sobers immediately when he realizes jfm is serious. jfm adds this moment to the handful of times wei changze has called him ge, manages to sit through the slight sheen of betrayal in wei changze’s grey eyes, pretends he doesn’t have red crescents in his clenched palms, and remains firm until wei changze agrees.
(fourth, jiang fengmian never wants to see wei changze bleeding because of him again.)
the gusulan lectures end anti-climatically but everyone’s had enough excitement in that last night hunt to not care. lan qiren is conspicuously absent from the formal farewells. (word of lan qiren’s missing goatee filters through the cultivation world in the ensuing weeks). jiang fengmian says goodbye to cangse sanren and wei changze when they part ways on a mountain outside of gusu.
he returns to yunmengjiang with half a heart and half a soul. he settles into his jiang heir duties, ignores the telltale absence at his side, and eventually ascends to the head in his father’s retirement. he agrees to an arranged marriage with meishan yu sect without much complaint. every few months, jiang fengmian meets cangse and changze in yiling. there’s an unmistakable distance between them now, but cangse is still a bright force to be reckoned with, and wei changze still calls him a-mian, and gets drunk with him the night before his wedding.
he meets their son during one visit. wei wuxian is an adorable combination of both of them—warm and bright with laughter, eyes full of mischief and kindness. he calls jfm shushu and bounces with happiness when jfm spoils him with gifts.
their meetings grow less frequent through the years as jiang fengmian is caught up in sect leader duties, and his best friends roam the world, helping the weak and the poor, free from the monotonous drivel of discussion conferences and politics. he is in yiling one evening–it’s been years, and their letters have stopped, he is nostalgic of old times, wonders where their journey has taken them, until he hears a commotion further down the market, an angry stall keeper and a shivering boy. jiang fengmian see wei wuxian cowering on the streets, in bloodied rags of clothes, pale and too thin, and his heart shatters.
jiang fengmian doesn’t have time to grieve. at lotus pier, his best friends’ child looks up at him with wide apologetic grey eyes that are too painfully familiar while his own spitfire son screams through closed doors. (years ago, when wei changze had woken up, he had held jfm’s shaking hand and said, a-mian, in lotus pier, you never have to apologize for things that are not your fault.)
the gossipers say jiang fengmian loved cangse sanren so much that he is raising her son. he favors him even above his own son, they whisper, that perhaps the rogue cultivator’s brat even is his own.
it’s true that he see cangse in the messy tangles of wei wuxian’s ponytail, in his sharp focus when he wields his blade like a third limb, in his bright unrestrained laughter, in his carefree spirit. but those grey eyes belong to jfm’s brother. he watches wwx put himself in front of jc when his son’s temper gets him in trouble with the taller and bigger kids in the streets, and all jiang fengmian remembers is the man who refused to leave his side, who pushed jfm out of the way and bled.
jiang fengmian lives as the jagged piece of a soul missing two parts, he watches wwx grow with each day into the perfect embodiment of his best friends, and thinks he understands what it means to attempt the impossible.
