#26 - Wunsoc Patrons
Francis doesn't understand why he can't have a nice patron. It's true that some Wunsoc candidates have a parent or other relative as their patron, but few seem as horrible as Aunt Hester. Francis sometimes thinks even Baz might be preferable, because even he chose all his candidates. What would it feel like to be chosen? To have someone see potential in you? Wouldn't that be so much nicer than being forced into a role just for the sake of a stuffy old family tradition? Francis looks at his other unit members' patrons and feels sad. Some of them are the best of the best. Why couldn't he have a patron like Nancy Dawson or Jupiter North?
Francis hardly dares to complain about Aunt Hester, even when she's not around. Somehow it feels like she must have cameras watching him, making sure he's living up to her expectations. But every now and then he mentions something in front of his other unit members that drops a hint at what he has to endure with his aunt. One day when he makes one of these off-hand comments about Aunt Hester, Thaddea calls her "Aunt Hester Pester the Festering Wound." It is fitting for such a grouchy, stuffy old patron.

Ok so I know I might be reaching a bit here but one of my theories for future nevermoor books is that the wundrous society actually turns out to be evil. Specifically the elders and the importan society members eg holiday wu and doctor bramble.
We know they've betrayed more vulnerable members in the past to help themselves like when they threw mog under the bus in Hollowpox. We were told this was to distract from the Hollowpox and Holiday wu was just doing her job, but what if that wasn't the case. What if it was to distract from a bigger plan wunsoc has that could possibly endanger the citizens of nevermoor or even the city itself.
Squall talks about him and morrigan having a "shared enemy". The logical solution to this is that it's maud but what if its really ghe wundrous society and the plan they have has been going on for years and squall somehow found out when he was in WunSoc. Maybe the courage square massacre was him taking over nevermoor before someone worse -wunsoc- could do it. This could have put they're plan back years hence the reason it's still going on in morrigans time. Maybe this is also why squall is so desperate to get back into Nevermoor, so he can save it from the wundrous society. This could also be the reason that the society members were so apprehensive to accept morrigan. The younger, less important members could have just been because of propaganda fed to them by wunsoc about how wundersmiths are evil. But what if the people closet to the elders were apprehensive because they knew the truth about squall and how he put their plan back hundreds of years and were afraid of her doing it again.
Now what about Jupiter? He's important to the society and very close to the elders. What if they are purposely keeping him away. In book 1 elder quinn says she recommended Jupiter to the league of explorers. Maybe on purpose so he'd be away all the time so they could work on they're nefarious schemes and what not. Maybe the reason he kept telling mog that doctor bramble was close to a cure was because that was what the elders were telling him but she actually wasn't even trying and they were using the Hollowpox as a distraction.
In short- wunsoc is suspicious and I spent way too long thinking about nevermoor.

Thinking about the fact that in Jackalfax Morrigan was always hated or feared due to the supposed curse on children born on Eventide and when she came to Nevermoor she began to realize that nothing was her fault, that nobody hated her or blamed her or even knew about the curse to shoot dirty looks at her, but when people (wuns or unwuns alike) found out she was a Wundersmith it was like reliving her hate-filled childhood. People would fear her, and hiss Wundersmith under their breath around her as if it were and insult, glare at her or cross the road to get away from her just like when she was in the Wintersea Republic, it was probably like reliving everything that she thought she’d escaped. Her once safe haven had now become like Jackalfax. After she was slowly recovering everything went back to how it was before all her development was lost.
Edit: I am so sorry for my shitty grammar and spelling, I was half-asleep when I posted this

I’ve been listening to Hozier’s new songs on repeat since they came out and Eat Your Young feels SO MUCH like Ezra’s song, both in someone singing it about him and in him singing it.
The world has all these problems (big and little), plus various wants and needs. Then a group of 9 people come along with the power to seeming harness the world and bend it to their will, and of course people are going to exploit that for everything it’s worth. Wundersmiths are taken in young, and they are basically stripped of their agency the further they get into their studies (“Because I am a Wundersmith, and that is what we do. We say yes.”), made into 24/7 public servants. If anything happens to them, they can just get replaced by the next kid who is groomed into obeying the will of the people constantly, making wundersmiths in general very disposable (although, training up a new kid would take time and energy, but that adds to the charm of it, I think; “seven new ways that you can eat your young” and all that. So long as the results are useful, that machine won’t stop). It would be quicker and easier to eat your young :)
Ezra (and Wunsoc, eventually) is definitely pushing this cycle of abuse back onto Morrigan, but at least she’s got people on her side who aren’t going to let that happen.

hello i’m plaguing your askbox as well because i need to learn from the elders.
what if wundersmiths created mesmerism? like in ancient mythology how gods give the humans gifts for doing something, what if that happened in nevermoor? some human did something honourable for a wundersmith and they gifted them an ability in return. but then, gradually, people resented the mesmerist for having this ability, and turned against them, so the wundersmith made them forget they were ever there. the gift was passed on and continued like this, but nobody knew, there was no record, because that’s the point. nobody remembers.
This is such a cool theory. And because we know the wundrous soceity was created to protect wundersmiths, imagine if all the knacks are actually gifts from the wundersmiths. like, the wundersmiths would choose a group of people to help them and then grant them gifts, and that eventually became wunsoc.
(also, honoured that you'd consider me an elder)

I hate Mildmay as a person but I LOVE him as a character.
Like he’s a posh twat, he gets on my nerves, and of course we all know what he did
But he is so well written, adds so much time o the story, the way he changes when we find out the truth?? I love it
I will never stop this debate in my mind of what my opinion on him is.

hey it’s me
day two is wunder and I was sort of stuck so I just did my favourite ghostly hour :) (ALSO YES ITS THE GOSSAMER SPUN GARDEN I CANT DO BGS VERY WELL 😭)
morrigan will probably be in a lot of these, also excuse me if my style is being a bit inconsistent
Image ID: Morrigan from Nevermoor is in one of the first ghostly hours she was in, in Hollowpox, with Brilliance Amadeo, Elodie Bauer, Owain Binks and Ezra Squall (they are not present in the image aside from a very blurry silhouette). She is almost half lying on her stomach to stare intently at her gossamer spun rose (which does look like a pillbox hat on a stick), though from the way the image is framed it’s hard to tell how she is posed. She is wearing a dark grey blazer and white shirt. This image is in greyscale.

small little things/details i headcannon about people in the Nevermoor books series pt.2 (with a plot twist since I'm making these up as i go)
lam drink a lot of herbal tea when she can (or isn't meditating) because it helps with her headaches
kedgere is the kinda person that says he doesn't mind whatever music the staff puts on but then uses earplugs everytime the music is too loud but he doesnt like it
mahir is a collector. he collects stuff, little trinkets (like a racoon, which I think would make more sense for arch since he's the pitpocket but y'know what who's making the rules so Arch is a collectors as well #racoonbuddies)
when francis get's really anxious he fiddles with his fingers a lot, bites his nails or bites of the inside of his cheeks (and if hester notices she always tells him to not do that)
dearborn looks like someone who keeps favourites between children, murgatroyd doesn't and rook can't care less (but I do think she likes mog)
WELL--- that's about all for today, this one was a little more circled around WunSoc and hopefully next time I'll be more inclusive (I love doing these but I have no clue when ,,next time,, will be 😭)

So some more thoughts on Nevermoor....
I'm thinking that Witnesses must be pretty rare. The only ones we know of are Jupiter and Jack. Jupiter says that most Witnesses could never live in a place like Nevermoor because it would drive them crazy, so that's possibly an explanation. But think about it: either he knew no one else around was a Witness, or he took a big risk in banking on the chance that they weren't when he brought Morrigan into Nevermoor. Because if there were other Witnesses around, they could have outed her for being a Wundersmith. I'm thinking maybe it's a Wunsoc thing for their members to be familiar with how many other people there are with their particular ability. So Jupiter would know how many other Witnesses the Society had.
But that's still only accounting for people who made it into the Society. There could be a zillion other talented people out there, like Witnesses, for example, who never entered or passed the trials. So again, what I'm saying is, Witnesses in Nevermoor must be pretty rare, and Jupiter must've had an awful lot of confidence that there weren't any others around - or at least any skilled enough to decipher what they were seeing when they looked at Morrigan.
