Writers! Assemble!
Tumblr media
Calling all #writers on tumblr! We have something very special lined up for you here on @books this month: Your very own Betts (@bettsfic) is running a writing workshop!
Who is @bettsfic?
Betts has been on Tumblr since 2012, where she mostly answers writing advice asks but occasionally goes on reblogging sprees of fleeting hyperfixations. She’s the Editor-in-Chief of OFIC Magazine (@oficmag), a literary journal for original fiction by fanauthors. She also leads the Fanauthor Workshop (@fanauthorworkshop).
Beth's fiction has most recently appeared in The Write Launch, Barren Magazine, and Rivet Journal. She received the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Grant and was a Hudson Prize and Launch Pad Prose Competition finalist. Her work has been supported by the Millay, Jentel, and Kimmel-Harding Nelson Center artist residencies, among others, and she’s been teaching creative writing for seven years as a college instructor and a freelance writing coach. You can find out more at bethweeks.com.
What's this about a workshop?
A writing workshop is generally a gathering of writers sharing work and giving feedback. In this case, we’re hosting what’s called a generative workshop, which means we’ll be introducing core writing concepts and providing prompts for you to work on and share.
How does this work?
Each Monday over the next four weeks, starting August 14, we’ll post a workshop post for the week at 10 AM EST.
On Wednesdays, Betts will answer any questions you might have. Please send us your questions here on @books on Monday/Tuesday, so she can review them and prepare answers for posting on the Wednesday of that week.
Every Friday is Feature Friday! Betts will select work from the #tumblr writing workshop with betts tag page, and we'll reblog it to Books.
How to join:
You can get as involved as you like. Message us here at Books to be included in the tag list on each Monday workshop post so that you get a notification.
You can also simply follow along quietly on the #tumblr writing workshop with betts tag page.
Questions?
Ask any questions you might have before we start here, and Betts will answer them here on Books through this next week.
So, sharpen your pencils, polish your keyboards, and follow the #tumblr writing workshop with betts tag, and we'll see you in the writers' room <3

cw: referenced/implied sex, discussion of a safeword
Hermione was still washing up when he returned home. Patting her face dry, she sensed him before she felt him, a looming presence that he could hide if he chose to. She stayed still as fingertips fluttered against her waist, then around to tug her tight against him.
“Hello, love.”
“Welcome home, Draco,” she said softly, watching him in the mirror and the way his silver eyes glinted at her as he kissed along the curve of her neck.
He pulled open the silk ties of her robe to reveal naked skin beneath, still damp from her bath. “You look ready for me.”
“Mhm.”
“Did you think about what we’d discussed?” His tone was light, like he was asking her about her day or the weather, but Hermione knew better. Depending on her answer, tonight might pass much differently than usual.
“I did.”
“And?”
Maintaining eye contact through the glass, she shrugged off her robe to reveal the jewel-capped plug winking up at him from her arse.
“I’d like to. Tonight.”
His reaction was immediate: eyes darkening, hands gripping her hips hard enough to bruise.
“Are you sure? Don’t just do this for me. You have to want it, too.”
“I do.”
The groan that wracked his body nearly had her bending over right then and there. She loved her wizard, and seeing him here like this, desperate for all of her, made Hermione want to give him anything and everything.
“Safe word?”
“Ferret.”
He huffed in amusement, but didn’t let up his grip. “Don’t hesitate to use it.”
She nodded, but he scowled at her response.
“Yes.”
“Good girl.”
The familiar praise warmed her now just as much as it had at the start. She would always be good for him, even when she was bad.
WC 297
Written for Day 6 (Kinky versus vanilla) of the HP Fanfic Writers' Guild Discord Smut Workshop. Limit: 300 words.
What do you think his safeword is if hers is "ferret"?

Hello again writers, we're back with another great workshop, this time run by @girl-with-goats!
This workshop is for you if:
You feel dread when you have to drop in a smut scene;
You struggle with describing the technicalities / the flow of the scene;
You want to learn how to write smut with taste,
You have no idea how to approach the whole Mature versus Explicit rating,
You don’t know how to smuggle in some character or plot development.
It will run from Wednesday February 14 through Tuesday February 20 in The Workshop of our Discord Server! As always, questions are welcome on the server or to this blog. Happy writing 🪶

Hello all! I got a lot of interested parties when I mentioned maybe doing a writers camp this year, so I decided to do it! Beginning February 1st, 2023, and ending February 25th, I will be helping my campers create and complete a 1,500 word short story on the subject of their choice; either fanfiction or original work. We will be starting from the drafting process, on through editing, descriptions, prose, and my own personal “do’s and don’ts” when it comes to writing.
How this works: I will not share your work with other campers without your permission, this is a purely individual exercise! I have four “lessons” to teach, which will be made available on Google Docs. Each camper will set aside 15-20 minutes at the beginning of each week to chat over discord or tumblr (we don’t have to do voice or video, it’s totally up to your level of comfort) to go over each week’s lesson, and another 15 minutes or so at the end to go over the results. On Sunday the 25th, it is my goal that each camper will have a completed short story of their own to share with the rest of the class.
There will be 6 spaces open to writers of any skill level, the only caveat is that you must be open to receiving constructive criticism. We will be going over things like grammar, word use and sentence structure, which means there occasionally might be something I suggest changing or re-wording. The goal here is to help each other grow, not be mean spirited or rude when reading one another’s work—if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all!
I cannot wait to get started! The sign up sheet is HERE. Please don’t hesitate to message or inbox me with any questions ❤️
Let’s get writing!

One of the main characters of this story I'm writing is androgynous/enby and has vitiligo. I might've found the right words to describe Them in Their initial appearance, but I thought I'd share all my scrapped ideas.
"'The heavens', as he'd known them, appeared as neither man nor woman, but bearing semblance of both's likeness. Their skin, dark as the night sky and adorned with blotches akin to starlight."
"...adorned with an artists' touch of speckled starlight."
"Their skin, as dark as the night sky and adorned with the finest touches of starlight. As if painted (or sculpted) by the world's finest artist." (Friend's suggestion)
"...adorned with scattered hues akin to starlight." (Another friend said, 'Yuck')
And, because I might as well, this is the working description. I still think I could do better than this.
"Their skin, a canvas as deep as the night sky, is complemented by an artistic splash of starlight." (I suggested 'artful', but nahh)

something about writing workshops that most instructors probably won't tell you, but is a useful mindset to have going in, is that the workshop isn't necessarily about improving the piece of writing you're bringing into it. instead it's about making you aware of what your writing is doing: what your style is, how your ideas come across, what motifs you might be repeating, etc.
i say this because it can be kind of frustrating and deflating to get a bunch of feedback in a workshop and then not know how to apply it to the specific work you brought in. but it can be a much more enlightening experience if you use the workshop as an opportunity to learn more about yourself as a writer.

good timezone, sprites! @nashira here and being a lil candid with the confessionals cam. i wanted to share a little bit about what went into deciding to do this workshop in the theme that i did, because i could have definitely went with purely ACNH route that would just be celebrating the game and not touching on the pandemic at all.
however, being that animal crossing is strongly linked to the onset of the pandemic (to me and i'm sure you and many others)...there's no way i can talk about ACNH without talking about the fear, the isolation, the heartbreak that i experienced in march 2020.
and i have yet to unpack those really difficult and heavy feelings, but in spirit of moving forward and growing as a person, it's time for me to consider all that i/we collectively went through, put our grief away in a box, tie it with a bow and rest it in a safe place.
to this day, 2020 still has me in knots. I can't keep living like this, I need to work through these feelings so that I can really experience 2023, still masked but with a full heart. there's no way we can continue fighting the ongoing pandemic otherwise!
if you want a safe space to write about these feelings, please join us on sunday for this workshop.
sign up here! tickets are sliding scale £0 - £15

HPFWG's 2024 Point-of-View Workshop, Day 5
Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
In 400 words or less, write a Drabble using outsider pov, epistolary, narrator as a character, reader insert, or choose your own adventure.
Bonus: Use at least two different POVs (first, second, and third person limited, omniscient, or objective) OR use dramatic irony to show something the reader understands that the narrator/POV character does not.
You peek out from behind the bookshelf to where he sits at the corner table hidden from most of the outer room. Draco has changed since you last saw him with his parents after the Battle, the three of them huddled together covered with dirt and blood. They’d looked lost and afraid. Now he’s back like all the others in your class to re-do their last year at Hogwarts.
It’s supposed to be a second chance, a supposed path to recovery, but from what you’ve seen so far for the Slytherins is the exact opposite. They’re ridiculed. Ostracised. They are reaping the consequences of their actions whether or not they’d been on the losing side. Draco is the prime target for anyone with a grudge, and you can’t even say he doesn’t deserve it.
Still, you watch him and wish for a different outcome. You’ve always liked his wit and intellect. How he looks in a Quidditch kit fresh after practise helps, too.
”You might as well sit if you’re going to keep staring, L/N,” he says without looking up.
”Am I bothering you?” You tentatively take the seat in front of him.
”Better you stare at me and I know about it then you do so behind my back.” Now he sits up, the light grey of his eyes muted within hollowed cavities that betray his exhaustion. “You at least don’t seem like you want to kill me.”
You bite your lip as you ponder how to reply. You could say something encouraging, but he’d probably take it as pity.
”I’ve always liked you,” you admit, bracing yourself for the worst.
His eyes widen, then he laughs, the sound of it as much surprised as it is bitter. “And now?”
You lean forward to catch his eye, wanting your feelings to come across as genuine as possible. “I still want to know you now just as much as I did before. Maybe even more.”
Draco eyes search yours for the lie, but seems to see nothing as the tension in his shoulders loosen. For the first time in a long time he smiles, the light of it reaching his eyes, and it’s all for you. “Well then, Y/N, do you want to go over our Runes assignment?”
Your heart soars at the invitation. Maybe there’s hope for friendship yet. In the future? Only time will tell.
399 WC
Reader-insert
Again, another pov I never, ever use, even though I do enjoy reading it from others. I've been curious about this style for a while now, but have been hesitant to attempt until this workshop. Who knows, I might do more if the mood strikes or ppl let me know they like it.
