Five was too overzealous, but one wasn't enthusiastic enough. But as I hit the send button, I heard a voice behind me. "Why don't you just do it the old-fashioned way and actually talk to me?" My eyes widened as I turned to face Ardit. He stood there looking like a cross between an exasperated parent and a bored college student. I had been avoiding him, but fate had other plans for me. I often refer to certain moments in writing as magical moments, where the characters just take over and they create a world without you, and suddenly you’re not thinking, you’re just writing. There’s a bliss in that, an escape. I recently was caught in one of those moments as my characters made their way through the Dusk toward the potential of war. Jacklyn and Austin, who are best friends, just took a beat and made each other laugh. That wasn’t supposed to be there. The passage was supposed to be largely descriptive. But my characters decided that in this moment of tension, they wouldn’t allow each other to fall into their own brains too much, and it was lovely. Just as this quote on writing is. While Ms. Rita Dove likes to play with words as her tool, I enjoy playing with emotions as mine.
