SOUNDTRACK CHALLENGE by snail.
Don’t want to work on your project? Looking for a reason to browse Spotify/Youtube? Need to cut down your 500-song playlist? Here’s a challenge for your afternoon!
The basic idea is to create a playlist of ten to twenty songs and give them titles as if they were your project’s original movie/TV soundtrack. Think about the future and how, in the perfect world, you get to choose all the music for the adaption of your project. Track names, track order, album cover, etc. The guidelines below aren’t hard rules but this is a challenge so it’s…meant to be a challenge.
BASICS
No more than twenty songs (don't include songs that simply capture the 'essence' of your project).
Primarily instrumental music.
Arrange the songs as they would be played in the show/movie.
Include titles for each song (ex: "Manda's Drive" - Downhill Lullaby by Sky Ferreira)
An alternative way to do this challenge would be to post one song a day with a title, description of the scene, and why you chose it.
HARD MODE
No music from existing original soundtracks. This gives you the opportunity to explore composers and artists you might not otherwise have found!
Include a main theme/opening credits song.
Create a graphic to go along with it. Maybe an album cover, tracklist, or poster.
Tag five people to create their own soundtracks!

Summer Chaos Writing Challenge
Time for a little more of an official post now that my other post has floated around for a couple days!! The Summer Chaos Writing Challenge is a wonderful way for writers to let lose with their creative juices in a completely unhinged, practically unplanned story with random strangers equally unprepared!
Here’s how it works:
Due to the number of people interested there will be several groups/pairs of writers and you’ll be matched based on your answers to the Google form attached
Writers will be able to decide on themes, tropes, and a brief description of the main character as well as a title for the characters role ie villain, love interest, best friend etc.
WRITERS MUST NOT DISCUSS PLOT POINTS FOR THE STORY
Writers will have a rough schedule of about 2/3 days per person to write a scene/chapter before the next person in the group/pair takes their turn
This will continue until the story reaches its natural end or one or more of the writers decide they no longer want to continue the project**
Writers can make a mini presentation on their work to post on tumblr and you are free to share the work on this platform with the rest of the writeblr community!
**in this case, if the leaving writer permits the remaining writer may continue the story without them or receive a new partner!
This is supposed to be a fun way to explore themes and ideas and break away from things like outlining and plot lines and to just indulge in some writing, unabashed and unfiltered. Of course there are a few rules to make sure everyone has a great writing experience and I will check up on writers throughout the summer!
Rules:
no discussing plot
no editing other writers work
try your best to stick to the schedule - let your partner or me know if you need an adjustment!
do not repost any of the writing on other platforms
you may withdraw from the competition at any time
all members will receive a copy of the document at the end of the challenge!
I don’t know if I should make a discord server or not, so feel free to tell me if you think that’s something you would enjoy! The google form will be open for a week so please go ahead and reblog so anyone who is interested can join so I can match people as soon as possible. The challenge will run from early to mid september (unless you feel your story has reached a natural conclusion before that!).

Head’s Up Seven Up Tag!
I was tagged by @zoestorm for this, so thank you!
Rules: Post seven sentences from your latest WIP and then tag (up to) seven people to do the same.
All of the following are lines from my upcoming novel, Flipping Out, a genderfuck coming-of-age crime/heist romance dramedy (genres are for cowards anyway). I hope you enjoy reading some of these as much as I enjoyed writing them.
1. It started in Fuckoff, Nowhere. Well, technically it started in Marston, Virginia, but who the fuck cares about Marston Fucking Virginia?
2. It was also far enough from any kind of major hub of human civilization for some old school “Dixie pride” — a dog-whistle so loud it could kill a chihuahua — to have seeped into the walls of the local Presbyterian church and to come dribbling out of the pastor’s mouth.
3. He took a step to the right and one of his dad’s sandals sailed through where his head had been a second ago. Even at the speed it was going, the scent trail was potent-going-on-pungent.
4. Smug had a face and it was, somehow, Sigmund Freud.
5. “the happiest day of a woman’s life is the day he realizes he can be a hot guy”
6. The trailer park near Plymouth, New Jersey was a hole; the kind of hole people fall into when a society is built like a latrine.
7. “Hey, I could still be a faggot.”
“What, like a girl-faggot?”
“Sure,” Beatrice said, raising her beer. “Girl who is a faggot. That’s me.”
“Woah.”
I cheated on number seven because I’m so proud of it lol. I don’t know a lot of writers on here yet, so I’ll pass it on to @uphillsky and @natalieironside and anyone else who feels like going for it.

30 DAYS, 30 LINES CHALLENGE: DAY 27
Join the 30 Days, 30 Lines Challenge!
FROM MARIANG MAKILING:
However, as they crossed the covered walk, Maeri Kit looked back. She couldn’t help herself. The shadow was still there. It manifested inside an occupied classroom, peeking at her through the glass windowpane, showing half a chilling grin while hovering behind a student.
Tumblr media
Notes: Thank you for reading! Is this particular entity relevant to the story? No. (Not yet.) To Maeri Kit’s life? probably. But mainly, it’s there because it’s fun for me and I keep thinking about the old building at my former university. Have a great day/night!

THUMBPRINT CHALLENGE
I was tagged by @godswar to participate in the THUMBPRINT challenge like, a million years ago. Sorry about how late this was, but ty for the tag!
rules: look back on your work, both past and present, finished and unfinished. what are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work? tag as many people as the number of tropes you listed.
Trope:
Armed to the teeth: You know those scenes where the characters end up in some sort of underground situation, and they’re forced to give up all their weapons. They keep on giving and giving and giving, until they’re down to just the clothes on their backs. Yet there’s that one character that still has to keep pulling out weapons, and even then they’re unsure whether they gave up all of them or not. This, to me, is a *hilarious* trope, and I love writing it. Adds to the je no se quas of the scene, yk? (I’m so sorry, french speakers everywhere. My 3 years of french completely failing me rn.)
Narrative Element:
Food: Lovingly crafted descriptions of food, glimmering and glistening and yearning to be pulled out of the page, to be savoured in your mouth-food as plot, food as narrative. Just… food man.
Trope:
He who fights monsters: As described by tv tropes, he who fights monsters is, essentially, a corrupting trope. It’s the embodiment of “do not become a monster when fighting a monster”, and I love it. There’s just something so intriguing about a character starting off, just wanting to make the world a better place, suddenly getting sucked into a web of horror and coming out for the worst. It’s the good shit.
Narrative element:
Love: More specifically, any type of love that falls outside of the typical, cookie cutter suburban neighborhood love. What does love mean? What different forms does it take? How does it change a person? And what does it mean when it isn’t all that you imagined it to be?
Trope:
Enemies to lovers: Listen, I am a simple bitch, and when I see visceral loathing + attraction between two characters it makes my brain cells collectively keyboard smash. There’s something about bringing out the utter worst in a person, and still falling for them, even at their lowest point that *does* things to me.
Narrative Element:
Urban Settings: As a born and bred city slicker, i love books that take place in cities. That doesn’t mean I, idk, have a grudge against books taking place in small towns or out in the country- a lot of those books are near and dear to my heart. I just love having narratives where part of the plot is exploring the city, it’s nooks and crannies. It’s such a wonderful setting and it can be utilized in a lot of ways, from chase scenes to heists to team meet ups!
Anddd that is it- about 6 tropes/ narrative elements that are common throughout my writing! I’m… honestly unsure what to do about the tags, bc I have little to no mutuals on writeblr LMAO (probably mostly bc of my lack of an intro post and general non-participation in the community. That will change I swear.) So uhhh anyone who wants to join can! Good writing everyone!

what is with men being mad any time a woman raises her voice where did that even come from. someone posted a video of a small electrical explosion, and the top comment was of course the woman screams. the second comment is women try not to scream challenge, level impossible. i had to go back and watch the video again. there is, somewhat fainty, a little gasp emitted off-camera, more of a yelp than a scream. it is mostly lost in the crack of the explosion. afterwards, you hear her voice, shaken, say, are you okay?
i am helping one of my friends train her voice pitch lower, because she wants to be taken seriously at work. she and i do each other's nails and talk about gender roles; and how - due to our appearance - neither of us have ever been able to be "hysterical" in public. we both appear young and sweet and feminine. she is cisgender, and cannot use her natural voice in her profession because people keep saying she appears to be "vapid". we both try to figure out if our purposeful voice lowering is technically sexist. is it promoting something when you are a victim to it?
a storm almost sends a pole through a car window. in the dashcam, you can hear the woman passenger say her partner's name twice, crying out in alarm. she sounds terrified. in the comments, she is lambasted for her lack of calm. how is that even fucking helping?
in high school, i taught myself to have a lower voice. i had been recorded when i was genuinely (and righteously) upset; and i hated how my voice sounded on the phone speakers when it was played back. i was defending my mom, and my voice cracked with emotion. it meant i was no longer winning the argument: i was just shrieking about it.
girls meet each other after a long summer and let out a little joyful scream. this usually stops around 12-14, because people will not tolerate this display of affection (as it has the effect of being passingly annoying). something about the fact that little girls can't ever even be annoying. we are trained to examine each part of our lives (even joy) for anything that could make us upsetting and disgusting. they act like teenage girls are breaking into houses and shrieking you awake at 3 in the morning. speaking as a public school educator: trust me, it's not that bad, you can just roll your eyes and move on. it does not compare to the ways boys end up being annoying: slurs in graffiti, purposefully mocking your body, following you after you said no. you know, just boy things.
there's another video of a man who is not allowed to yell in the house, so he snaps his fingers when he's excited about soccer. the comments are full of angry men, talking about how their brother is unfairly caged. let him express himself and this is terrible to do to someone. eventually the couple has to address it in a second video: they are married with a newborn baby. he was trying not to wake the infant up. there is no comment on the fact women are not allowed to yell indoors. or the fact that it could have been really alarming or triggering for his wife. sometimes i wonder if straight men even like women, if they even enjoy being in relationships with them.
for the longest time, i hated roller coasters because it always felt inappropriate and uncomfortable for me to scream. one of my friends called me on it, said it was unusual i'm so unwilling. i had to go to my therapist about it. i don't like to scream because i was not raised in a safe situation, and raising my voice would have brought unsafe attention towards me. even when i am supposed to scream, it feels shameful, guilty. i was not treated kindly, so i lack a basic form of self-protection. this is not a natural response. it is not good that in a situation of high adrenaline - i shut up about it.
something very bad is happening, i think. in between all the beauty standards and the stuff i've already discussed - this one feels new and cruel in a way i can't quite express. yes, it's scary and silencing. but there's something about how direct it is - that so many men agree with the sentiment that women should never yell, even in an emergency - it feels different.
is the word shriek gendered automatically? how about shrill or screech? in self defense class, one of the first things they tell you is to yell, as loud and as shrilly as you can. they say it will feel rude. most women will not do this. you need to practice overcoming the social pressure and just scream.
most women do not cry out, even when it's bad. we do not report it. we walk faster. we do not make a scene. what would be the point of doing anything else? no matter what we do, we don't get taken seriously. it is a joke to them. an instagram caption punchline. we have to present ourselves as silent, beautiful, captivating - "valuable."
a woman is outside watching her kids when someone throws a firecracker at them. she screams and runs towards her children. in the comments, grown men flock together in the thousands: god. women are so annoying.

30 Days, 30 Lines
Day 02 - from Cheerful Oblivion (FC5 fic)
A lone tear cut through the blood on her cheek and she sat on her knees with one wet hand on the floor. God must have a sense of humor. John couldn’t have set the scene any better. “Little Miss Wrath has some explaining to do.” He said with equal parts amusement and chastisement, trying to conceal the other emotions brewing beneath the surface.

30 DAYS, 30 LINES CHALLENGE: DAY 20
Join the 30 Days, 30 Lines Challenge!
FROM WHERE THE POET WENT TO DIE:
They were, in fact, in a kind of relationship similar to what genuine lovers had. But their time together, the bliss of their youth, during that one summer was painfully brief.
Time—however sedated it felt in this town—moved too fast, held on so loosely, for them to call each other lover.
