Hmmm... why do I like Pyrite so much? You asked for it.
Well, i guess there's the story and then there's the writing. Almost didn't keep reading bc Jane/Maura weren't together but glad I did.
A lot of what I like about Pyrite is what I like about all your stories but this one has very raw emotional element which is very attractive to me. There had to be a believable reason they weren't together and imho they would never cheat on each other - only made sense that it had to be way cases consume Jane causing her to be reckless or they trying to protect each other. Jane can be aggressive and Maura can be icy but their instincts are always towards each other even though Maura tries to keep things under control and Jane loses control. Jane needs Maura and Maura needs Jane for all kinds of reasons.
I like that Jane is detective and Maura the ME - like that Maura chose to align with the Rizzolis and be called Dr. Rizzoli. They are the best when working together and everybody knows it. Even when they aren't together Jane protects Maura and won't let people diss her - even defends Maura's choices like violin lessons to Elena and separation to others.
I like them as parents. They are naturals. Their daughter is so much like them. Elena idolizes Jane, always sharing secrets, and both of them are in awe of Maura. Elena's conversations with Jane/Maura are fantastic. Maura as wife&mother- calls daughter and Jane "my love". For some reason this just seems totally like Maura and I love it.
The story features Jane's Italian heritage and Boston roots which I like a lot.
I love, love, love Jane in therapy and Maura encouraging that. Love Jane learning through therapy and the discussions there. Jane and Maura together in therapy - Jane's vulnerability and Maura's bluntness is also something I like.
I like the way you write the characters, pretty much canon but enhanced - Maura is still kind of socially awkward and blunt but in a very strong confident way. She's not above using jealousy to get what she wants from Jane - kinda sexy especially bc Jane knows what's underneath it. Jane is Boston people - language and attitude, accent, reads people.
All the good family stuff you write makes me look forward to all interactions not just Jane/ Maura: frankie and nina together, Angela and Jane have good relationship as do Angela and Maura, Maura and nina's friendship is amazing, always love jane and frankie, frankie and Elena, all the Rizzolis including Tommy and TJ - they all love Jane and Maura.
Who doesn't love plumber Jane? I know Maura does.
Telling the story using flashbacks was a great technique.
I always like your word choice and sentence structure. You can sum up backstory/ history of person or event in a few succinct sentences. For example, the superintendent guy who used to be a cop - know everything I need to know about him from couple sentences about Jane's previous interactions with him. Also what it was like for Jane earlier in career.
I like how your writing emphasizes the senses. Using touch and describing the way they touch each other - Elena touching Jane's face, Maura's calming touch on Jane, pinching each other, Jane's nervous energy, even Maura and Elena talking about Jane and frankie hitting each other and horsing around on the field trip is Rizzoli touching and conveys something. Using smell: Jane smells Maura, Maura smells Jane - security and "home" for both. Using sight: Maura watches Jane, they read things in each other's eyes and faces, the way Maura dresses, acts, touches herself bc she knows Jane is watching. Descriptions of Jane's face, musculature, voice, heartbeat, even the Aviators.
All the emotions and descriptive senses when they are together in the dark kitchen after Jane follows Maura home from dinner at Italian restaurant - in fact the whole part about Jane being allowed back in the bedroom to "make love" to Maura was filled with the kind of intimate emotional angst I love. The sex is very sexy but usually has intimate details and still moves the story on. Some of my fav parts are the conversations and emotions during these scenes - very vulnerable and true.
Humor but more in banter and Jane's sarcasm and Maura's not sarcasm than haha funny - Jane and Maura not sleeping together so nina says Jane is in bad mood some mornings and Maura says doesn't have anything to do with them sleeping together trust her, Maura says Catholic Jane can't talk about sex but didn't stop her from doing it and Jane says we are a complicated folk.
Some of your writing phrases and images I liked:
"She wore camaraderie well; it conformed to her body and hugged the curves of her soul, giving it definition - a tailored suit far more attractive than one made from any fabric. "
Maura says "After all you've done, good and bad, and despite who you are - my hero and the biggest pain in the ass I've ever had - I still choose to get up every day and love you. "
"Maura only hoped Elena would grow up to mean everything like her mother, like this. To eat with gusto and love with abandon. "
"Jane hugged so sinfully. "
Contrast of them driving after dinner together - Maura slow and steady but assumed Jane - "always a bundle of unbridled energy" would get pulled into speed chase BUT she didn't. She took things slow - see, she's learning!
Frankie about Maura- "Maura was beautiful in a lasting way....but the physicality of her emotions..."
"Elena answered only in quiet tears and a slump into Jane's open arms, where she refused to leave for most of the night. "
Sorry this is sooo long. Just enjoyed the story, I guess.
Still thinking on my top Jane/Maura moments and outfits/looks - promise they won't be nearly this long.
Don’t apologize; this is amazing! I’m blown away by your engagement with my work. I can’t thank you enough! I’m so glad you interpreted all these things in the way I intended. I must be doing something right for at least a handful of people if that’s the case.
I appreciate you!

pokemon theory i just thought of: new pokemon appear in the pokemon universe when they're designed in this one. they're created ex nilho but they have retroactive realness; they weren't here yesterday, but today they've always existed.
pokemon researchers have had to suss this out on their own over decades, and it's a really unpopular theory, made worse by the fact that no one can come up with a better one. from their perspective pokemon generate spontaneously but in both chronological directions, and the similarities of many pokemon seem to be detived from a conscious and creative understanding of the world--their world, though? what other world could there be?. there are ice cream pokemon and pokeball pokemon and sword pokemon and trash bag pokemon.
there are so many pokemon with both wings and a beak. is this like swords? is there an ur-flying type that this class evokes? there are so many canine pokemon. but what is a canine? is there such a thing? there's only one set of sword pokemon, right. one tea-set line. is *feline* a coherent category? would the ur-feline have two legs or four? why do so many pokemon have humanlike bodyplans-- but then again, why so few?
pichu has always been the prior form of pikachu. why didn't it get counted in order? why do we call it that instead of saying pikachu is the middle evolution of the pichu line? why can so many trainers remember finding this out well into their journeys? why didn't ash start with one?
this is why pokemon researchers do a lot of labwork, drink heavily, and use ten year olds for field research. you can't have an existential crisis if you don't even know what time is yet.

I MEAN but wouldn't that be an incredible isekai series??
a modern princess whose job is basically just being a beautiful figurehead
grows bored with her vapid role in life and withdraws from society, riddled with ennui
only to fall into a fantasy realm where princesses have real political power
as well as important responsibilities that her subjects depend upon
and at first it's a comedy of errors as she realizes that none of her training prepared her for this
but then she grows as a person and applies herself to learning how to guide and guard this kingdom
and becomes the powerful and just princess she was always meant to be
...so I guess apparently my new favorite conspiracy theory is that kate's shoujo manga just underwent a MASSIVE genre switch.
