Places you should add to your little town/city in your fantasy world!!
Post offices. Wild, I know. But give me the unhinged kind. Pingeons and little postal dragons all over the place. You enter. The most disgusting smell fucking assaults your nostrils. You know what it is. Letter in hand, you go up to the counter. The postal worker is just a slightly bigger pigeon. You shed a tear.
PLAYGROUNDS!! Create the most dangerous kinds of playgrounds, the ones suburban moms would TRIP if they ever saw one. Monkey bars that are way too tall, swings that go full circle... The metal slide stays the same, it's already painful enough.
PARKS!! MAKE IT ALIVE!! Show people going on walks, reading beneath trees. C'mon most of them are already hundred years old (And are going to die after that CR 15 creature wrecks the town) anyways!! Show couples and picnics, show a family enjoying the sunday, give me someone picking flowers for their loved ones.
A bakery! Do you know how much these places are underrated? And do you know how much plot potential they have? Every good story starts with food poisoning or granny's recipe! Give me a place your players/readers are going to treat like home and, for once, it's not a tavern or a guild.
Government buildings! Give me a town hall that has a kilometric line in front of it. Give me a registry that is as old as this town. Give me police stations! Give me courtrooms! Make one of your players get arrested and now all of the party has to go through burocracy like a bunch of normal people!
(Who am I kidding? You don't need to make them get arrested. They are going to do that for you.)
Touristic attractions! Give me a full-on statue of the country's leader! Give me museums! Give me streets, ruins and whatnot that attract thousands of tourists everyday! Give me an annoying city guide that tries to get the party's attention everytime!
Magazine stands! Magazines don't exist? Newspaper stands! From the Queen's Journal to the most questionable new piece of Fox's Tailtracker, you have it all! Make your players doubt what's actually happening, sprinkle a little fake news... Or is it fake at all?
...Toy stores. OK HEAR ME OUT. Make magic toys; miniature skyships that actually fly, metal toy dragons that expel fire, little wands that make little light spells, wooden creatures that can move and make noises... Make children happy! And your players too because they will waste their money on these stuff.
Instrument store!! Make your bards happy with special instruments or just weird ones! Give me a battle in one of those that is just filled with funny noises and the worst battle soundtrack ever!!
Not exactly a place but... Cleaning carts!!! Show me people cleaning the streets, picking up the trash, cutting trees!! Make the town look clean!! Give me an old man that is really proud of his work!!!
(or ways to make your players feel even worse when the villain destroys the town later on :) )

Sci-fi worldbuilding ideas for your city planets :)
If the planet is entirely city, where does the oxygen come from? Are their farms dedicated to producing oxygen? Special factories? Are there plants that produce oxygen very quickly all over the planet? Do you have to pay an oxygen tax?
Does the planet have natural water? Are the oceans untouched, incorporated into the city, or have they been drained and the water used for things in the city? What is it used for? Drinking, dams, hydroelectricity, food production, etc?
How deep does the city go? Has the planet been mined into to create more space? Is geothermal energy used? Are the bottom levels reserved for things such as sewage, electricity production, factories, prisons, etc?
What is transportation like? Are there roads, floating roads, or are trains and trams used instead? Are planes used? Is transportation fast enough to quickly travel across time zones?
How is food produced? Is it imported, or is it grown on planet? A combination? Think about greenhouses, factorised farms, vertical farming projects, etc. If oceans are left relatively untouched, is food produced in it? Are fish kept? Are there ration laws?
Are the poles less occupied than the rest of the city? Are they used for storing frozen goods, super computers? On a planet with no oceans, is ice and snow valuable?
The same goes for the equator of the planet. Is it more or less occupied? Is the heat used for anything? Are there solar panel farms? Air conditioning?
Are there parks and protected areas of nature? Ancient gardens, important forests, sacred land? Are there laws about chopping down trees? Are there farms for trees and plants? Are their plant shops, and are they expensive? In Star Wars, a part of Coruscant's highest mountain is a public monument that you can look at - are parts of mountains, rare ores, fossils, etc, preserved?
Not all sci-fi cities look the same. Coruscant has skyscrapers arranged in a very chaotic manner, stretching incredibly deep and incredibly high, and there is almost no plant life or natural parts of the planet to be seen. Xandar is arranged neatly with very similar style buildings whilst remaining relatively low rising compared to other city planets, and has lots of greenery and a fairly untouched ocean. Wakanda is relatively defined in layout, with a mixture of plants and buildings, houses and skyscrapers, with every building being unique. Draw inspiration from whatever you like.
Write whatever you want, even if it's common or cliche. It doesn't matter if it has been done before, because it hasn't yet been written by you.
Happy worldbuilding!

stolen worldbuilding prompts
i have a few worldbuilding prompt novels, so i'm going to share some of their prompts here. if i make others, they shall be edited on to this post. i'd say support the original creators but that would make it swifter for the copyright creatures to find me. of course, these are mainly fantasy themed.
Describe the black market in one of the cities you encounter. Start by writing down the names, appearances and personalities of three vendors. What are some of the unique, unusual or magical wares they sell? Or what valuable information do they have?
Whenever you and your company hit a new town or city, you’re sure to be tavern-bound eventually. Write a list of at least five tavern names, their themes, their proprietors, and their personalities. What characters or unique brews might you encounter at each establishment?
Think about a child who has been affected by the actions of you or your party. How did crossing paths with you change its life? Did you burn down their village, or save them from a monster attack? What is this child like, as a result, when they grow up?
What are some major landmarks you encounter on your travels? Do locals tell tales about their origin? Write about how these experiences might affect you as you continue on your journey.
Write about someone you’ve lost along your adventures, how did you deal with that loss?
You and your adventuring company are going to a party. Who invited you, where is it taking place? A small gathering or a fancy masquerade, what’s the food like? What rumours or info will your company gather while at the party, or what villain will interrupt the festivities?
What is your world’s setting planet shaped like? Round, flat, atop a gargantuan turtle’s back? Describe its parameters.
Create a typical fantasy world, but one thing is dramatically different. Like, all creatures can do magic but humanoids cannot. Or humans can never die of old age but all the plants only live for a few weeks. Get weird. Get stupid.
Create a setting where gods walk the earth and directly interact with each other, their followers, their enemies. How will each interact with mortals of their world?
A member of your adventuring party gives off an odd scent. What does it smell like, what is the source of it, how does it relate to what one knows (or doesn’t) about that character?

There’s been a lot of talk about solar eclipses lately, so I was wondering if anyone has solar eclipses in their settings, and if so what is their significance?
There’s a lot of potential with this idea, so I definitely plan to come up with something for my world 😁

I think its so interesting how differently people approach worldbuilding and prompts. Sometimes you get incredibly specific and rational prompts like
"Think about a city in your world. Name two different merchant factions, what they deal in, who their founders are, and how they rival each other. "
And sometimes you get prompts that are nothing more than.
"There is an alley. People don't like it. Why?"
And different writers thrive under each style dramatically differently.
Like, I can't do the first one at all, my brain just doesn't work like that. But give me a name for a superhero and I can come up with their powers and life story. Give me a vaguely bad alley and I can write about the unsettling magical phenomena that plague people who pass to closely by.

Fantasy Location Idea
Fixed up this fantasy location I wrote for a prompt in class a few years ago. :] Feel free to expand or borrow!
Nestled deep within a boggy bayou somewhere far away is Soakdin – a tiny dock village in the middle of the murky waters. It had a couple of houses, a family-owned tavern (today’s special: deep-fried crocogator eyeballs), and a trading post. It isn’t much, but it’s home. Not to any human, but the waterkin: two-legged creatures with webbed hands and feet; fins for ears; slits for nostrils; yellow fishy eyes; tiny, needle-like teeth; and scales for hair.
The place doesn’t receive many visitors, unless travelers are hopelessly lost; this village isn’t on any map. And besides, even if it were, it isn’t exactly an attractive tourist destination. Thick, slimy algae crawls up the wood. Clouds of mosquitoes thick as smoke could strike at any moment (which made tasty snacks for the waterkin). The food is revolting. And the inhumane, monstrous appearance of the creatures deeply unsettled people who had never seen anything like them before.
It’s safe to say visitors weren’t exactly keen to come back – at least, the ones that the waterkin didn’t eat – but eager to wash away the memories of what they experienced, what they saw. Desperate to escape the swampy terrain, to be back on dry land where the trees don’t whisper their darkest thoughts, where the water doesn’t conceal spying creatures.
