loneliness, 2023.
loneliness of an airplane meal
loneliness of scrolling through your phone while being surrounded with people
loneliness of that bench in a park
loneliness of typing "I'm so happy for you"
loneliness of a new city
loneliness of still waters
loneliness of a solo boat in a river
loneliness of looking at old pictures
loneliness of being so moved by some music/ poetry /book that I can't relate to anyone who can't relate to it
loneliness of waiting for something that isn't going to happen
loneliness when you expected solitude?

“just tell me that i'm doing okay, even if my biggest effort today was getting out of bed and drink water. tell me i'm not the distorted monster i see in the mirror every day when i stumble to the bathroom, dizzy with fatigue and burdened by the sensation of an empty stomach i don't plan to fill. tell me it's enough that i take slow gulps of air, as if thinking before every breath whether it's worth it or not. tell me i'm not this horrible person i know i am. lie to me. make me feel like there is hope for me, even if it's all spilled on the floor in a river of crimson. just tell me...just tell me...”

I do crave the ocean
Salt
Heavy air
Sound
White waves
Sweeping tides against a forgiving shoreline under a sky that dances with its soft mirror below

And if this was to end tomorrow,
I can fully believe that love is kind, love is patient, love is soft
If this was to end tomorrow,
I can fully believe that I was never hard to love I was simply around those who didn’t deserve it.
If this was to end tomorrow,
I can fully say this world is so much better with you in it.
If this was to end tomorrow,
I can fully say that you inspired me, and were worth every ounce of love I had.
If this was to end tomorrow,
I can only hope that this world gives you all that you have hoped and dreamed for.
If this was to end tomorrow,
I can only thank you for amplifying the light within me before life got too hard
If this was to end tomorrow,
I want you to know you made me feel a love worth all the beautiful poems
If this was to end tomorrow,
I’m thankful for our little piece of forever

Don’t Give Up by Lorraine Brooks Rain comes. The rivers overflow and flood the plains. Our hearts become full And sometimes anguish and fear is what remains. Hearts ache Hands and bodies fail or become weak Powerless and fearful Relief and painless thoughts are what we seek. Minds change And overwhelming feelings turn to fear It can feel hopeless We don’t know what to do or how to bear. But The rain does stop And the sun comes out. And whatever it is you’re upset about You work it through and find a way And just as Manilow would say… You made it through the rain And kept your point of view. You learned to deal with hurt and pain And find a pathway through. You learned that even on bad days The sun’s behind the clouds And even in life’s alleyways That you can beat the odds. So buckle up and buckle down Do what you need to do And in the words of Barry M We can’t smile without YOU.
Poet Lorraine Brooks reads her latest poem, "Don't Give Up," on the August episode of Divabetic's podcast available on BlogTalkRadio, iTunes and Spotify.

the infamous 'last sighting of a barbary lion in the wild' photo taken by marcelin flandrin (1925) haunts me to my core. there's something so achingly poetic about it.
