bledwhite
o shimmering void,
how your warmth escapes me!
caught in spurts
long enough to distract
from impending doom;
generational sigh
culminating in
ashen silence.
i lean into you,
wishing to be torn apart
at atomic level,
so as to bear no responsibility,
no resemblance
to the life given an option
never asked for.
patience (forever patient)
for the process
tantamount to avoidance of
another breakdown,
desire to breakout
and abstain from such
emotional attrition.
mutinous mind
ravaged by years spent
as sole watchman
for what now feels to be
mere figment
of an imagination
always crafty in its ability
to redirect amidst
cataclysm.
you wait for me,
as a dear friend;
our bond permeating
across decades,
haunting in absentia
while the pieces
fall where they may.

Donovan’s Pub, Queens, NY
I was watching a few old episodes of George Motz’s burger show on First We Feast the other day and saw him visit one of his favorite NYC burger spots, a place I’d never heard of... Donovan’s Pub. So many restaurants and pubs out in Queens remain mysteries to me so I’m trying to be more active in familiarizing myself with them, which is why we almost immediately took a train out to try Donovan’s for another one of my “CBTPB” trips. And I must say, their burger is every bit as good as George said it would be...
Their burger is a big, thick two-hander, grilled how you like it, served with lettuce, tomato and onion and your choice of fries, steak (seen above) or skinny. And as you can see, we aded American cheese and bacon on ours as well. Cheese slices on the top AND bottom buns, no less!! The burger is clearly seared very quickly as that monster patty perfectly held in all its juices, which oozeed out onto the plate when we cut it, becoming a beefy bonus to dip the burger and bun in!
Opened in 1966, Donovan’s has been slinging burgers for decades and it’s no wonder their list of different options takes up a whole side of the menu. Definitely want to try their chili burger next time!
It’s an easy ride out to Donovan’s, about 30 minutes from Manhattan on the 7 train, then a few minute walk from the 61st St.-Woodside station.
A hidden gem of a burger joint that has finally been revealed to us!
