Imbolc

Today is Imbolc in Australia, Imbolc is the cross quarter that transitions the cold seasons to warm as it sits in between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. As nature rewakens from the winter slumber we celebrate rebirth, and beginnings. As part of Imbolc its common to do a deep cleanse and I feel it is a large part of this Sabbat.

I cleanse myself, my home, my work desk, my tools, everything. Obviously this takes more than one day especially because I like to physically and spiritually cleanse. I recommend mixing physical and spiritual cleansing together to save time. I use a playlist full of cleansing noises (rain, waves, singing bowl, etc), and add appropriate corresponces to my cleaning products.

For example I have a bad reaction to certain cleaning products so I use white vinegar for cleaning my bathrooms, I add essential oils of correspondences and draw a sigil on the bottle to help the vinegar clean spiritually too. I also use magick floor wash and soap for moping and carpet sweeps for deodorising carpet.

For myself on the day I apply face and hair, then rinse and exfoliate in a shower. For spiritual cleansing I either hang cleansing correspondence (lemon herbs, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, salt) under the shower head, or I use those correspondence in a bath.

Remember when cleansing to follow up with protection magick and fill with intention, as the universe abhors a vaccum.

Outside, I weed my garden of anything that is disturbing the garden's balance to make way for beneficial plants. If I can I like to volunteer for some cleaning groups but sometimes I just go for a walk and pick up litter. Picking up litter can be dangerous as you may cut yourself and get an infection, possibly à STI in some circumstances. Please wear gloves and hard enclosed shoes, and do not put yourself in danger or trespass to collect litter.

Spiritual Cleansing magick for lazy or low spoons witches (these methods aren't ideal for a deep cleanse but can still help with cleansing):

Purification and Home Blessing Shaker Jar

Have a generous amount of cleansing plants (rosemary, garden sage, dwarf citrus tree, lemon thyme, lemon balm) growing in the area you want to cleanse and regularly shake them gently to activate them.

Leaving out a bowl of cleansing correspondences (Florida water, salt, rice)

Play cleansing sounds or music

So besides cleaning what else do I do to celebrate?

Before Imbolc I start growing sprouts and microgreens, the new growth I often associate with imbolc

I wake up early to watch the sunrise

I eat breakfast. I have a very different selection of food to the Imbolc recipes you typically find. Yes, eating seasonally is always a great idea, especially with Sabbats, but I try to include eggs, sprout and microgreens for rebirth and beginnings. I also include salt, vinegar lemonherbs, garden sage, and other ingredients I associate with cleansing. Sometimes I also like try raw food in honour of the newness of Imbolc, raw ingredients must be fresh for this to work and if you are not confident of its safety do not try it.

Weave a Brigid cross out of paper and write on it things I'd like to try before next Imbolc

I'd like to make my own besom, but I'll see how I go with that

Decorate with white, blue and green. I use these colours to represent growth in the cold, to show the transition. However Imbolc is also a fire festival so many people use fire colours, symbols and correspondences for Imbolc too.

Considering I've noticed people relaxing with their hygiene now that lockdown has been lifted I think it's a good time for Imbolc to remind us of the importance of cleansing. Take Imbolc and this pandemic as an opportunity to learn more about good hygiene practices both spiritual and physical.

Hey Y'all, it's Rei, and I'm here with my very first self-made spell! Its loosely based on some information on petitions I learned from Olivia/The Witch Of Wonderlust On YouTube /@teaspellsandsecrets here on Tumblr (If you haven't checked her out, I highly recommend her)

The basis of the spell is a petition mixed with a candle.

You Will Need:

-A Piece Of Brown Paper

-A Pen Of Your Choosing (Color correspond as much as you want)

-A Candle (I used Yellow for happiness and serenity)

-A Place To Put Your Candle (I Used cardboard cause Im lazy and didn't want to scrape off a plate, not very safe, don't be like me kids)

-A Corresponding Crystal (Optional)

Instructions:

-Take your paper and tear off all the machine cut edges. If you want to banish, tear away from you and turn counterclockwise, and if you want to bring in things, tear towards you and turn clockwise.

-Write your full name and birthday on the paper in the pen of your choosing 3 times.

-Turn the page 90 degrees, using the direction corresponding above, and write your command. Make sure to speak as if you are currently doing it (i.e, I am confident instead of I will be confident). I used the phrase"I am confident in myself and my abilities", along with some others along the banishing line.

-Fold the paper away/towards you as many times as you want, thinking about your intention.

-Light your candle and drip wax onto your surface.

-Quickly, before the wax dries, place your folded paper on the wax to stick them together.

-Do the same thing, but this time stick the candle to the paper.

-(Optional Step)Place the crystal near the candle, but far enough away it won't get wax on it.

-Let the candle burn down. Make sure to listen to basic fire safety rule (Don't leave it alone, keep away from small children/pets, etc.)

And that's it! You can dispose of the remains if you want, or keep it around as a reminder of your choice to feel better about yourself. Either way, you did it. Congratulations.

Happy Yule! Happy Holidays! Happy New Moon! Me & my partner did some magic tonight! We did a #moneybowl spell that was inspired by @thewitchofwonderlust #wonderlustcoven !! I used a small green plate cause that's all I had, & a small spooky cloth that a friend gave us! Crystals used: Pyrite, Aventurine, Malachite, Citrine, Green Jasper(I think?!), & Clear Quartz Geodes! You know what they don’t say about writing? That it sucks.

Word Vomit:

I don’t want to write today. Am I going to though? Fuck yes I am. Does that mean I’m going to want to write tomorrow? Who the fuck knows. See I read a lot of authors, bloggers, and other writer types talk about what you need to do as a writer (which is fucking write, big surprise) but I don’t see many of them say how they get their ass in the chair and do that. Some days I sit in my chair and don’t write a single word, I read and reread over and over what I’ve already written. Sometimes I back track and delete shit. Only to put it back and then swear up and down the page because it’s fucking frustrating. And yeah, I fuck around on facebook other socials, who doesn’t?

Other days I can sit in my chair from dawn until dusk and my fingers never leave the keyboard. How does that happen? What’s the difference in that day from the other? What am I doing differently that I can get so focused like that

Guess, what, NOT A DAMN THING.

I do the same thing that day as I did the day before, get up, drop off my kid, have my coffee and breakfast, send the hubby to work and then sit my ass down. So what the hell? Why am I more productive one day and not the next? What’s the SECRET??

There is not one, there is not a secret. For me, it comes down to the one thing a lot of writers are screaming that you CAN’T rely on.

Inspiration.

If your words and your imagination and your story doesn’t excite and inspire you, then you will fizzle and burn out. BUT, I will tell you that it isn’t the end of you or your ideas.

A lot of times I find it hard to connect the dots (or plots, as I like to call it) between some really cool or interesting story aspects. Like I had an idea for a dramatic event regarding a character in one of my stories that I LOVED and could not WAIT to write. So I wrote it in advance, then I had a struggle getting from where I was at currently in the story to that scene.

And it was sooooo fucking boring!

There was a lot of mundane shit I had to add to get them there logically and to make sense in the story and I hated every minute of writing it.

Did it make sense? Yeah I tied it all together.

Was it relevant? Yeah most of it was actually pretty important information.

Did you just info dump? Maybe a little but that’s not ALWAYS a bad thing if you practice doing it right.

Long story short, there will be parts of your writing that you will LOATHE, you will just want to cuss at it and every word you type will make you SICK. You feel like it’s just word vomit on the page.

That. Is. Okay.

You do not have to love every word you write. Just as long as you get that story out and then you can work on chipping away the unrefined parts in editing. I honestly wish I had been able to find something that said all this before I just jumped in. Not loving all of the writing process made me feel like I wasn’t doing it right, and all the people (well most) were saying that writers block isn't’ a thing.

I’m sick of hearing that. That it isn’t “real”, because it is, it’s just different for different people. Just because some people don’t get that or don’t have that problem or don’t struggle with it doesn’t mean the rest of us that DO are just making it up, or are delusional.

Because it was real for me, and still is. I just didn’t understand early on that I was the block and now I do. Now I know how to get around myself and my writing has gotten better because of that.

Give yourself some slack cuz, you’ll get there too

Samhain

Today is Samhain in Australia, Samhain is the final harvest and a cross quarter day. It is believed that the veil between this world and spiritual world is thinnest so many use this day to work with, honour, or protect from the dead.

Samhain is about the spirits (particularly the dead), psychic power, ancestry, and memory. Many people use orange and black for Samhain but I prefer to use purple because I associate it with spirits and psychic connection, it's a cooler colour too, so overall it just feels more appropriate. I pair the purple with silver as I associate it with spirits and mystism.

For Samhain I decorate my altar with a shard of mirror (often thought to be a portal for the spirit realm), a tiny tea set (in preparation for my dumb supper) an heirloom (I use a rosary that my great grandmother owned), and that papery skin of onions (for protection).

For the (early) dumb supper I dress in black, use rosemary for memory, and poppy seeds as an offering because poppies are used as a symbol of remembering the dead, particularly ANZAC soldiers. I eat my dinner silently at the altar, by only candle light if possible. Once I finished my dinner I bow my head, clean up, and return dance to my Samhain themed playlist in honour of the spirits.

Before going to bed I cleanse my bed room, cover each mirror in my bedroom to avoid unwelcome guests, then redo my protection spells.

Other ideas for Samhain are:

Eat food with fermented and aged ingredients, this is controlled rot and therefore a kitchen witch's best embodiment of death. Of course, like every Sabbat, you can also use seasonal produce to celebrate

Try making a recipe that has been passed down in your family or reminds you of someone who passed

Write down what you wish to banish and burry or compost it (please make sure your paper is safe for decomposing)

Bond with your Chthonic deities and spirits

Do any maintenance needed for heirlooms

Create or update your bucket list

Think about your wishes for when you've passed, like how would you like your body treated? Any funeral requests, or a message for your loved ones? What should you do now so people remember you the way you hope they will?

Preserve some food for winter

Samhain in my opinion is one of the easier Sabbats to celebrate indoors and 'alone' so any southern hemisphere witches out there, please don't get discourgaed by quarantine, you can still celebrate!
