After her 1957 singles' victory in Wimbledon, Harlem's Althea Gibson is greeted by her mother at Idlewild (now JFK) Airport. She was the first Black champion in the tournament's 80-year history.
Tennis player Kathleen "Kitty" Godfree was born in London in 1896. Godfree competed at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics, and won a total of five medals: one gold, two silver, and two bronze. She is one of only two athletes in history to have won five Olympic medals in tennis. Godfree also won two Wimbledon single's championships. In 1978, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
There are eight single Grand Slam finals every year, and I watched almost all of them in the last 15 years, but there is still something magical, chilling about that moment when 'Championship Point' pops up on the screen the last time, the ball doesn't come back anymore and the new King or Queen falls to their knees crying and in disbelief, the thought not yet fully sunk until the Trophy is handed over.
