I got a copy of Tablets at Work by Claudia Wollny last weekend and really fell in love with the Diagonals section of the book. (It's also called Egyptian Diagonals in some circles, but I guess the Egyptian part is questionable so she dropped the term for her book.) They create a really cool, 3D like effect so I wanted to warp up an example for the tablet weaving workshop I'll be teaching in a few weeks. This is 20/2 mercerized cotton, and also my first time winding a circular warp on an inkle loom for tablet weaving.
I had two false starts but finally got it on the third try! I had forgotten that each square in the pattern corresponds to two picks, and I was doing just one before turning the tablets.

Kraków ul. Mikołajska 2 / Szpitalna 1 Kamienica Lamellich, XV-XIX w. foto z 28 listopada 2019
Mariusz Wollny. Kacper Ryx i król alchemików.

Kraków, Poland 2 Mikołajska / 1 Szpitalna St Lamelli House, 15-19th c. taken on 28 November 2019
Named after the owners who joined four Gothic houses in one palace. That's how a Renaissance protagonist of a modern novel describes the house's earlier sight:
I exited the cemetery gate, turned right and along the cemetery wall headed toward Mikołajska St. At the corner of Szpitalna St and Fleamarket there was a ramshackle house avoided by respectable burghers, especially after dark. The reason was an infamous Rascal Tavern, the worst dive within the city walls. Mariusz Wollny. Kacper Ryx and the King of Alchemists. Kraków, 2012
The Fleamarket is todays Mały Rynek (Little Market Square) and the cemetery was dismantled soon after the Lamelli House got its Classicist facade by Karol Kriszkier it wears to this day. The house's medieval past resurfaced, though, when a renovation in 1975 revealed Gothic polychromy on a ground floor's ceiling. However, the rascals had been replaced by upright citizens, like a writer Franciszek Wężyk who lived his last years and died here, in 1862. Several decades later, a lawyer Ferdynand Wilkosz had his office on the middle floor. However, his desk was more often covered in treatises on fish and crustaceans than court files. Wilkosz, man of great passion and diligence, become one of pioneers of nature protection in Poland. His office was also the headquarter of the National Fishing Association he presided over many years.
[1907, headpiece of Fishing Circular published by NFA]
A drawing by Franciszek Mączyński, showing the Lamelli House at the far end of Little Market Square vista, is from around the same time. Perhaps on that day Ferdynand Wilkosz took a break from editing one of his works on making fishponds or breeding trouts, walked up to the window and noticed the artist with his sketchbook?
[Mączyński's drawing]
Meanwhile, a variety of businesses were ran on the ground floor. Pharmacy under the Lamb worked here in 1840-1915. It's still alive and well, though a few houses down the street nowadays. Over ten years after it had moved out, in 1926, the official retail of the Czyżowski Plant Breeding & Agriculture House moved in.
[1930, Czyżowski advertisement]
The corner shop was taken by Wojciech Olszowski's colonial goods store. He was of a firm opinion that the quality of stock needs to be supported by advertising as broad as possible. An archival photography shows the store's doors opened invitingly, its signboard and wooden window display.
[1910-1925 Olszowski advertisements] [1934 photo]
The after-war life of the house was memorized by drawings of Leon Getz.
[1957, ground floor's hall] [1956, Jadłodajnia Staromiejska (Oldtown Eatery, no longer existing) in the inner courtyard]

Jazz Trios
I was off work yesterday after a long week of heavy work. I think am too old, anyhow I'd planned to do nothing except rest. By good fortune early in the morning I stumbled upon Jazz Sabbath, a Jazz trio performing  music of Black Sabbath. After a bunch of their videos, I listened to Jazz trio music all day long.
I listened to the Julius Rodrigues Trio and the Joey Alexander Trio. Both are such brilliant musicians, who while very young have been playing for a long time. Here is Joey Alexander at age 11. He's 19 now and the Birdland concert linked to are all his original compositions.
He's been playing regularly in trio with Kris Funn. His collaborations with Joey Alexander and John Davis on drums are wonderful. On Funn's Google knowledge panel the genre is listed: Japanese Hip Hop/Rap. I was skeptical and clicked through to his Website. I was glad because there is so much there, so much that I might have missed the Japanese Hip Hop. He's got the coolest merch I've seen. There's a whole page of Art + Writing which moved me.  His Web site is worth the visit.
I listened to a bunch of Jazz trios and will link to a few performances that taught my ear:
I Cover the Waterfront, Lester Young, Nat King Cole, Buddy Rich.
Money Jungle, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Max Roach
River Man, Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, Jorge Rossy
Everywhere You Turn, The Bad Plus, Reid Anderson, Dave King, Ethan Iverson
When the Sleeper Wakes, Michael Wollny Trio, Michael Wollny, Christian Weber, Eric Schaefer
I really know so little about music. I am sure I’ve just scratched the surface. And I surely hadn't appreciated Jazz trios as much before today!
