have you listened to nick shoulders? he's from the ozarks and whenever i see him in concert he talks about how nice it is to be in a place with a common history. a lot of his songs are about his complicated relationship with his home, with an added heaping of being really pissed at capitalism (and christianity) for making it so hostile

i have a playlist of songs because i know ill have to leave kentucky for grad school, and just the thought of it makes me cry. i know it will do me a lot of good to take a break, but kentucky is my home through and through. i still have over a year left, so im reminding myself to soak it in while i still can. i already miss it tho

i have not heard of this fella but listening to his top five on spotify, i am already about it and would love a recommendation on where to start with his music?

regarding your second paragraph, i had a similar feeling when i knew i was getting ready to leave WNC. it was a feeling of dread and homesickness for a place i hadn't even left yet, but also one of opportunity and promise. ultimately, i think it was good for me, and it made me appreciate my mountains more.

I know Vale had a lot of Spanish fans but after sepang 2015 did his following in Spain shrink likes Marc’s level of Italian fans probably dropped immensly but vale is like the king of the sport so I’m not sure if he would have lost as many Spanish fans as Marc did Italian ones. Also because he involved 2 Spanish riders would that impact the Spanish following and I’m not sure if the JL fans were fans of vale before sepang either.

Home to over a million people, Western North Carolina is a region in the United States culturally associated with the traditions of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This region has a proud history that defies common stereotypes seen in films and television, which often prey on the generational poverty, lack of access to education, and distinctive accents that have characterized the region in the past. Contrary to these depictions, people from Southern Appalachia have cultivated a warm, unique folk tradition that has generated myriad works, including unique cultural practices concerning food, music, and craft. Of course, the first people to live in Southern Appalachia were the Cherokee People, who still live in the area today. A federally recognized tribe, the Eastern Band of the Cherokee People are the descendants of the few who where able to avoid systematic removal of their ancestors by the US Government via the Trail of Tears. At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the remaining members of the tribe consolidated their collective land holdings in WNC to create an entirely Tribally-governed reservation, which has over the years introduced several tribal initiatives to revive and maintain the Cherokee people's unique culture, practices, language, food, art, and folk tales. It cannot be overstated the influence the Cherokee have had (and continue to have) on the culture of the region. art source.

It should also be noted that this is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Western North Carolina is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as several National Forests that serve to protect a myriad of unique biomes and local wildlife. This area is one of two temperate rainforests in the United States, and experiences more rainfall in inches a year than Seattle. The name "Great Smoky Mountains" originates from the effect of the rainfall. Moisture hits the leaves of the abundant flora, and transpiration occurs, causing the plants to release evaporative clouds of mist, creating a "smoky" effect on the mountains. One of the most iconic wildflowers found in the area is trilium, which tends to bloom in the early spring in the shady patches of higher elevations. One of my personal favorites is called dutchman's pants! Which look like little lederhosen.

The area is home to many forms of wildlife, including deer, black bear, elk, river otter, possums, red wolves, turkey, and skunks. We are also known as the salamander capital of the world, and the National Park hosts over 30 unique species, including the hellbender! The largest type of salamander in the world.

Popular activities and attractions in the area include hiking, biking, whitewater rafting/kayaking, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting the Biltmore House (in Asheville, NC), and, speaking from personal experience, just kind of hanging out in various grocery store parking lots with your friends. Its a wonderful and beautiful place to live and I love it lots. all of this to say. i do not know SHIT about spanish perception of vale post-sepang. i suspect he was mostly fine.

Livermush is very popular where I live in McDowell County, North Carolina. Have you heard of it? Here are a few facts about livermush:

•Livermush is a blend of ground scrap pork meat + liver, and spices bound with enough cooked cornmeal mush to make it sliceable.

•Food historians trace its origins to German immigrants who ate something called pon hoss, (pork scraps blended with buckwheat and spices) and then brought it to America during the 1700s. The food ultimately came south to the mountains and Piedmont, where it wound up on WNC farms.

•Scrapple is similar to livermush but NOT the same. It has less liver and different spices are used. It tastes different too.

•By law, Livermush is required at least 30 percent pig liver to be classified as Livermush.

•One could purchase a five-pound block of Livermush for around 10 cents a pound in the 1930s and '40s.

•Hunter's Livermush, which is made in Marion, is only found within 100 miles of Marion.

•Hunters sells over a million pounds of livermush a year.

•Some historians connect its popularity to the Germans’ penchant for liverwurst, a smoked sausage made with pork scraps. Livermush emerged as an alternative that didn’t require a smoker and could be cut with cornmeal to feed more people.

•The 5 commercial livermush producers — Corriher’s, Hunter’s, Jenkins, Mack’s, and Neese’s — are all based in North Carolina.

•One producer of Livermush stated that the closer they get to the mountains in North Carolina, their livermush begins to outsell sausage.

•Hunter's Livermush in Marion produces 20,000 pounds every week for customers of stores in five counties.

•Although the composition is similar to liver pudding (which you can find in the eastern part of the state) and scrapple (commonly found in Mid-Atlantic states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey), livermush differs from these two with its liver content + binding element.

•Scrapple tends to contain less liver, whereas livermush has a higher ratio of liver and liver pudding is made with flour, and therefore has a softer consistency.

•Early settlers made livermush in cast iron pots and stirred with wooden paddles, incorporating whatever bits of the hog had not been used previously. A regional food born of necessity and hard times, its popularity is thought to have grown during the Civil War because it was an affordable substitute for more expensive cuts of meat.

•Pork jowls, pork livers, Cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, sage and water are the ingredients in livermush.

•Liver mush is often compared to breakfast sausage and is sometimes called the poor man's pâté.

•Hunters Livermush founders Roy and Gurthie Hunter started production in 1955 at their Marion facility.

•Livermush is certainly high in Vitamin A and Iron, but a 2 ounce slice contains 90 calories, 40 of them from fat. And if you’re one of those people who need to boost your cholesterol level, that 2 ounce slice will provide 17% of your daily cholesterol requirement.

•There are only five commercial livermush producers on the planet; Mack’s and Jenkins Livermush are located in Shelby in the southwestern part of the state, Hunters Livermush is in the mountain community of Marion, Neese’s is in the piedmont city of Greensboro and in tiny China Grove it’s Corriher’s.

•There are two livermush festivals held every year in North Carolina. Marion, North Carolina, has the Livermush Festival, and Shelby, North Carolina, hosts the Mutts, Music, and Mush Festival.

*Livermush is a natural relaxer, cures stress, cures anxiety, cures sadness and best of all is DELICIOUS. 😁

The name doesn’t do it any favors that’s for sure. Every culture has its prized foods that outsiders can’t stomach. People either LOVE it, won’t dare to even try it, or they hate it. For those of us who grew up on livermush, we love it and will gladly eat your share. 😊

Juniper loves picnic season.

Several days off from work and a monumental road trip to Atlanta and Brevard dropping off and picking up stuff along the way. I cleaned out my storage unit in Brevard so my life in WNC has come to an end. Sadly I say goodbye to the mountains I have loved for many years and embraced the wet hot world of the coastal community called Leland.

I came home to sunshine and humidity but it was home. My bed had fresh sheets on it and before I slipped under the covers for the night I showered and took care of a few things. Sleep came easily. I woke much too early but drifted off again until the alarm went off and the lights of the bedroom blazed. So a cup of coffee and some classical music playing while we start the day before tackling the first of several projects on the list. First thing is putting the island stools together, followed by getting the bedroom closet organized. There's a lot of things to do today.

VC LIVE | 2022 International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition

We're coming to you from Vienna, Austria for the 2022 International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition.

46 competitors will perform a solo program of 25 minutes in the opening round of the competition, which will take place from September 17-19. The second round with 18 candidates will compete in the Semi-Finals on September 20-22. The first round of Finals with six finalists will be on September 23 and the Gala Finals, with the last three competitors, will be held on September 25. The last three finalists will play with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Joel.

Prize money of €20,000, 15,000, 10,000, 7,000, 6,000, 5,000 will go to first through sixth place respectively.

The first prize winner will receive several concert engagements including with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Nizhny Novgorod State Philharmonic, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana.

Additionally, the first prize includes a CD recording on NAXOS and a tour of Asia in May 2023 with World Culture Networks (WNC). We sat down with Naxos Founder and head, Klaus Heymann, on the collaboration with the Kreisler Violin Competition, his thoughts on starting a career as a young musician, and the state of the classical music industry.

Previous major prize winners include VC Artist William Hagen, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, and Sergey Khachatryan.
