I live! Time to sew another hanfu cosplay.
So yeah, SQQ sewing project - um got relegated to the back burner last year for reasons. And will likely never happen unless I really feel like challenging myself more . . .
But I already have the fabric on hand and I was feeling like I'd be stuck not using it until I saw her.
Tumblr media
That's right! I have a con in just over a month and I'm gonna do Mao Mao from the Apothecary Diaries. I love me a pragmatic plant nerd.
I'll use my green fabric I already bought for the SQQ project, I found burgundy cotton/linen mix at my local fabric store getting the last of the bolt, and figure out the few accent pieces.
I'll try to post my process as I draft the pattern pieces and then sew it together! This will be much easier than my previous one since she wears what appears to be a simple wrap circle skirt.
Even though the series is set in a pseudo-Ming dynasty setting (it has to be after 1492 since chocolate is a luxury good), she is not wearing a Ming style outfit completely.
We can break down her outfit to: Aoqun - green top layer which falls around her hips. Narrow sleeves and a simple style. The neck placket has a dark green strip that goes to the end while a spring green strip on top for part of it. The white underlayer is a mystery - we can see the collar but nothing else. The design is pretty simple and we never see a white sleeve underneath, the light green are cuffs on the sleeve of the aoqun.
Circle/wrap skirt - burgundy skirt that is either a circle or wrap skirt. Not the historically accurate mamian skirt (with all the pleats). This could be due to the fact that animating it might be more annoying or to keep the Ming time period vague.
She also does not wear anything under the skirt in the anime or nothing that doesn't move as a part of the skirt, so I'm gonna skip trying to put something under the skirt.
Things to do: 1.) Draft aoqun pattern. I will use one of my old patterns from WKX but cut off the long skirt part. 2.) Draft skirt pattern. I am going to be a bit lazy on this one and either will do a full circle skirt or pull out a regular skirt pattern (4 panel) and use that. 3.) Determine placket pattern. Just rectangles, but what is the right size of rectangles on rectangles?
4.) Figure out white underlayer? Make a full top like my last one with short sleeves to hide under the aoqun?
Anyhoo, that's all for now!

umm so I'm really bad at noticing allegories and stuff like that like they could probably spell it out for me and my oblivious brain would just skim over it so um can i maybe get more about woh being a trans allegory? like i think i can see what you're thinking of but i want to be sure
Okay so like you have to understand that I binged Word of Honor in a few days while sick and had this idea then and even then it's not fully flushed out at all so this is not a complete thought nor is it a good one probably.
(And also being trans myself means I read trans subtext into everything lol)
But like ZZS having that very rigid way of dressing in Window of Heaven and then once he leaves he has his hair down and all these different outfits except when he's taken back as a prisoner they make him wear his old uniform and do his hair the way he used to. And also how Four Seasons Manor is apparently known for their ability to disguise themselves and change appearance. And like then WKX has like so much gender. He refers to himself as Gu Xiang's father but Chengling's mother. And his relationship with women is like an essay in and of itself. Oh! And there's like that saying that they bring up several times about how a clingy man wins over a tough woman's heart or something and how that's supposed to be Wei Ning and Gu Xiang, but also WKX and ZZS (with ZZS being the woman in the saying) and also with Chengling asking ZZS to be his master. And then also in the Ghost Valley how the male ghosts have more out there presentations while the female ghosts present like regular women. But also how women seem to have much more agency in the Ghost Valley compared to elsewhere. And then Scorpion King's whole deal and with the top 4 assassins he has.
Anyways there's probably more but that's all I have off the top of my head right now.
Given enough time, a rewatch or two, and some academic bullshitting, I could probably put together a more cohesive thing about how like the Ghost Valley represents gender nonconformity and like the Five Lakes Alliance and Window of Heaven and all of that represent an enforcement of traditional gender roles.

Convince People with Virtue
This was the very first set of fan figures I bought, and one of my all time favorites. Here we have episode 1 Tianchuang Zhou Zishu in all his (existentially tired and OVER it) murderous glory and Valley Master Wen in his (not-at-ALL-over-it) murderous glory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fair warning, this is going to be a long post on account of how much I love these characters and these figs!
Tumblr media
The details on this set are spectacular. The robes, the poses, the hair, the accessories. So good! Zishu's vambraces, the silver decorative badges on his cloak and of course THE EVIL RED EYELINER.
Tumblr media
I love Zishu's guan and hair tie combo here, and also am absurdly charmed that we have WKX's hand resting behind his back in his standard pose.
Tumblr media
You can see a little more detail here where they actually molded and painted ZZH's hidden arm and hand, and a little more of the pleating on the Tianchuang robes.
Tumblr media
The weapons are removable! Baiyi is looking nicely detailed, and the bloody-edged fan is miniature deadly perfection. I thoroughly enjoy WKX's smirk that's been hiding behind the fan!
Just when you thought it couldn't get better, it DOES.
Tumblr media
That's right! Assassin gear!
Tumblr media
Here we have the conical Tianchuang hat and Zishu's assassination face mask. The hat is actually angled so it fits perfectly over his irregular shaped guan.
Tumblr media
Hahahaha he's so CUTE, dressed to kill! 😍
My Zishu's sword hand is right up against his face, so unfortunately I couldn't slip the mask between his face and arm. I tried but couldn't quite get my fumbly fingers to angle his face mask over Baiyi in a way that didn't immediately knock the mask off and disclose his identity.
The additional weight of the hat does make Zhou Shouling tip over, which is an insult to his martial skills but perhaps is explainable by the 6 nails cramping his style at the time of this particular scene. I'd definitely need to stick his feet solidly with museum putty if he was going to keep wearing this outfit.
In retrospect I really should have bought two pairs of these, and had one set with ZZS in Tianchuang's finest tailoring and WKX with his fan, and one of just them without any of the accessories.
Here's the card box inserts:
Tumblr media
I obviously love the other's weapon at their feet.
The title of these figures comes from one of ZZS's great lines in episode 30 (and is equally of course applicable to WXK in his role as Valley Master). Zhehan's mocking delivery here was so perfect:
你不会以为我创建天窗靠的是以德服人吧
Nǐ bù huì yǐwéi wǒ chuàngjiàn tiānchuāng kào de shì yǐ dé fú rén ba
You wouldn't think that I created Tianchuang by convincing people with virtue?
That's Google Translate for you. Viki's subtitles translate this line a lot more respectably as, You can’t possibly think I commanded the Window of Heaven by relying on my integrity to win others over, did you?
Material: PVC
Fig Count: 16
Diorama Count: 2
Rating: Deadly disasters (and we love them anyway)!

hanwenzhou thought of the day: i think, post canon, (everyone lives, they’re at siji, as we all know Definitely Happened In Canon) something should happen that makes hy reminisce fondly about zzs in his tianchuang-shouling outfit. and wkx should make an inquiring noise, and hy should realize that wkx’s never seen it, and he should decide that wkx is missing out, and they should super convince zzs to wear it for some roleplay.
but the thing is. i don’t think there’s ANY way for them to get to that point easily without it being at best uncomfortable and at worst traumatic for zzs? bc a) last time he wore it wasn’t even under his own power, it was when jinwang made him play dress up. b) if hy offers to help him get dressed up again, i think that will set off uncomfortable alarms in zzs’s head of a combo of ‘does hy only want the terrible cold version of me’ and ‘i am taking advantage of hy’ even tho both are demonstrably not true. c) if zzs dresses himself like this, i just think the headspace he gets into won’t be a fun sexy one where he’s only wearing the trappings of his former life but thinking of his current situation, i think it will be angsty and sad and bitter.
so how do they solve this? here are the options i’ve thought of
hy dresses up first: han-tongling is as much a persona as zhou-shouling was, and i think hy and wkx could have some fun with ‘what if hy had encountered wkx in an inn and was trying to get information out of him’. hy is serious and intimidating and a little cruel if needed, wkx is deftly countering everything and being extremely unintimidated - they’re feeling each other out in a dangerous quiet battle
hy does help zzs get dressed but hy wears the most siji-est outfit he can find—maybe even stolen zzs robes. he is light and gentle and playful and not particularly obedient at all, and that keeps zzs grounded, and he is also telling zzs exactly how hot he thought he was dressed like this and maybe some of his embarrassing fantasies, and that keeps zzs turned on ;)
the scenario they come up with is zhou-shouling vs wen-guzhu: zzs isn’t sure exactly why this strikes him differently but the idea that it’s not just him, and that he’s getting back into this persona to fight a wkx who is equally formidable works differently and better for him. they will actually fight, too, and they haven’t planned past that bc they don’t know how it will go. (this is, strictly speaking, not true. hy and wkx DID plan more, it’s just that it’s about how exactly hy will be introduced to the scene.)
ANYWAY pls tell me if you have other suggestions 👀

Brother Wen, who are you really? WOH episode 15. The Hero Conference is underway. ZZS appears on it in disguise to leave ZCL as promised after its completion. He does not know, does not suppose that WKX has its own visions of this event. Also, WKX does not realize that it is not the only person controlling the conference. ZZS, standing aside, not getting involved, is getting more and more terrified by the minute. He's slowly figuring out who's behind it all. He finds WKX who, like ZZS, prefers the role of a spectator. A few simple questions and answers that WKX gives to ZZS causes the fear of ZZS to grow. ZZS is not entirely sure of the intentions of the man standing next to him. He sees his different faces. He tries to understand WKX's motives, discover whose son he is, and why he hates the Five Lakes Alliance so much. He cannot understand this hatred, cannot accept WKX's behavior and declares to him that their paths are diverging. WKX is surprised, he thought ZZS understood what he felt. But once he starts something, he has to finish it. Even at the cost of losing the favor of ZZS. In the photo we have ZZS with a face covered with a veil. However, this outfit is not a disguise, scraps of fabric to cover. ZZS face cannot hide its beauty. Few people would pass by without paying attention to the ZZS. A simple outfit and a person with a perfect figure catches the eye. It stands out like a noble crane, among a flock of gaudy peacocks. ZZH was able to express great emotions in this scene only with his face and sparing body movements. His calmness and composure was the opposite of GJ's expressive outburst as WKX. Their conversation was short and emotional. It could be the end of their friendship, and at the same time the beginning of the journey to understanding the other person. WKX stayed to watch the spectacle he had prepared, and ZZS stayed to fulfill the promises made to the boy. Both men did not know that their paths would cross again in such a short time.

The shiny link said to ask you things so here I am. What's ur fav outfits for each of WKX and ZZS?
THANK YOU FOR ASKING although this is a very difficult question, given how many thoughts and feelings i have about their outfits. i've never tried to boil it down to favourites, but i'm going to go on a small journey and see if i can do it.
(1/5)
zishu first. devastating intro.
Tumblr media
this outfit makes me nostalgic for my first watchthrough. it's sexy, and i really like the way we see wenzhou both in red before anything else. but it lacks a kind of depth in the same way the unknown character does to us; it's a first impression. certainly a good one but just can't be my top favourite outfit.
his second tianchuang outfit is even better. it puts him in blue--his colour, siji shanzhuang's colour, even though it's draped in black and part of tianchuang right now. we get a lot of soul shattering emotions in this outfit as we start to learn who zhou zishu actually is, what he cares about, what he's built, who he's lost, what he is capable of doing. episode one kills me.
and then we also get a reprise of this outfit later, which is what really spikes its ranking up for me. the way he wears it subtly differently, coming full circle to finish this fight now that he's changed so much after the year he's lived. the way that blue he'd always carried with him, even into the heart of tianchuang, really stands out in stark contrast to jin-wang's red and gold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
beautiful. it's up there but doesn't quite get favourite.
and honourable mention of course are his other two we catch glimpses of in episode 1--brilliant shixiong blue accented in fUCKING green in his flashback as if he's remembering a time when he was still human, and his "i'm riding off to die now" cloak. these get NOTHING from me because i'm so sad.
Tumblr media
moving on.
zhou zishu tries to become unobtrusive and unnoticeable and ordinary but instead he looks Like This:
Tumblr media
and we all hate and despair and love that perfect hair shoulder blades jawline in equal measure. especially wen kexing.
comfy, rugged, unapologetically blue. this outfit introduces the flask, introduces him to wen kexing and zhang chengling, and we have some good times with it. but it's simple, and dark, and so is his view of his remaining life right now, and that hurts a bit too much.
so, next is the outfit wen kexing gives him and he's briefly suspicious but he does wear it, deciding to trust wen kexing a bit and caving in a little to the concept of being something more than he'd planned. we're expanding to two shades of blue, too, very nice.
this outfit sees us through the epic fight with the beggar gang, the heartrending siji shanzhuang flashback, the LIPS ON SHOULDER and that's not even the only reason this outfit is a top contender to the title.
because more layers means the chance to take them off. and it must be discussed how much work the under layers do in this outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at this man revealing that there is indeed more to himself, letting himself be less guarded around wen kexing. look at his smile, his playfulness, and that fucking fairytale princess that has been hiding under so many masks, perfectly offset by that pretty pale blue and that soft hairstyle.
but i'm not sure i can commit to favourite.
pin in that one, i will keep going. so, this first yueyang outfit is just So Much.
Tumblr media
the HAT, the DRAPE, the ZHIJI-ACKNOWLEDGING, the way that gray creeps in. zhou zishu has revealed his face and in doing so has decided not to hide, in more ways than one, as he says to han ying. he's decided to deal with his shit a bit and maybe live a bit better with the time he has left. he's becoming himself and it's so much.
and as if that wasn't enough, after their big fight when it all goes wrong, zhou zishu GOES BACK to wearing THIS outfit. "let's try this again." backing up, making up, re-centering in the last place that felt more himself and then setting back out again on the right foot.
Tumblr media
and then he sits in the miDDLE of the STREET, outer robe HALFWAY OFF HIS SHOULDER in stark contrast to the structure of the breakup-outfit, and SAYS LAO WEN'S NAME. what am i supposed to do with that. what. WHAT.
i think this one comes extremely close to being my favourite, pin in this one, too.
speaking of the breakup-outfit.
Tumblr media
it's so shimmery, suddenly full of so much structure and colour. zhou zishu, trying to reconcile who he's been with who he wishes he could be with who he doesn't want to see lao wen become, abruptly wrapping himself up in all these layers and trappings of a man that's a different kind of shield against the pain and it doesn't really make him any less lost in the end. but damn is it pretty. i can't really put my finger on it but something about his hair and that collar. and, of course, the blood. the declaration that nobody can stop him from killing who he wants and getting what he wants. hot damn.
however, comparing it to the two top contenders for the title right now, i don't think it beats either one.
part 2

more SHL/WOH screenshots, this time feat. the iconic veiled hat
1- i'm sorry but the COLOURS! all the blue and yellow/gold, it looks super good
2- more sad wkx looks
3- yep that is what he ACTUALLY said, god i love this show
cue some of my fav zishu outfits
4,6- the veiled hat! a literal crime that he only gets to wear it for two episodes
5- wangwujixian on YT (and by proxy Ren who showed me the fanvid) is responsible for me being obsessed with this scene. BUT I have always loved this outfit on zishu, it's so damn elegant! and the little collar! 🥰✨
7- yk... i don't think i ever paid attention to zhao jing when he was saying this line before because ain't no way that i don't remember... well there is a way my memory is not the best
8- mentioned this in my first rewatch (on discord so you wouldn't know) but during the conference these two perfectly mimic the facial expressions of a first time watcher (shenshen) and a rewatcher (zhao jing); sidenote: i freaking loath this weird cape thing shenshen is wearing
9- shenshen's "grimes up good" period
originally i thought i'd wait till i have more screenshots (yeah idk why either, this is a good amount) but my statistics test is approaching and i may be forced to take a small break from my rewatch ;-;

hello! Id like to ask if you can describe what are the layers Luo Binghe (thai version) from SVSSS are wearing? Im having troubles the one with the collar im on a budget and I wanna cosplay him thanks a bunch!
Hello,
Happy to hear you are looking to cosplay LBH!  Ah, the very pretty but complicated Thai cover artwork. . . this one makes me groan at how intricate it is.  I screen shot this from the SVSSS carrd.
Tumblr media
There is a lot of layer action going on.  Kityone, an amazing soul, did great work to remove text from more official artwork for the Thai editions.
Tumblr media
This is the only full length shot of Binghe’s outfit I could find.
kityone, did a spectacular job; when you click on the image you can zoom in!
Layers 1.) Zhong yi layer 1- innermost layer - black.  I’d pick a cotton or linen fabric for this.  You are looking at one that is very slim fitting. The Hanfu Story sells them as well to give you an idea for cut; see here
2.) Zhiju layer 2 - straight hem robe - black with narrow sleeves.  It has what I think is an ‘artistic/anachronistic’ high Mandarin-ish style collar.  The Erha manhua/artwork does this all the time.  It seems to be a thing for xianxia attire.  It is hard to find info on this in English, so, I could totally be wrong.  I can only find that type of collar on vintage patterns - think cheongsam/qipao or maybe Qing historical garments.  I’d personally copy the cheongsam/qipao collar as a base pattern and then modify it to match the hanfu style.  I know this is a huge shortcut but it makes sense in my mind.  Do a mock up with scrap fabric. 3.) Zhuji layer 3 - straight hem robe with red neck placket and red sleeve cuffs.  I think this has shorter sleeves that fall just past the elbow (3/4 length?) and are super wide.  [cries in sheer yardage]  The sleeve looks like it almost reaches mid-calf or lower.  I think it is supposed to be imperial/royal level - like the looooong sleeves you see in Nirvana in Fire worn by the princes when they attend court.  The neckline is a deeper V and I think a good reference for the cut is from the cdrama My Heroic Husband with the MC, Ning Yi.  His outfits frequently have this style which makes a clear X across the chest.  The blue/teal one in the middle is the best match and seems to fall in the right spot on the chest.
Tumblr media
4.) Belt with long fabric strip/accent.  I have no idea what the large silver belt buckle is supposed to look like - we don’t have good enough detail and resolution.  However, we can see that there is a long strip of red fabric that falls from the waist down the front to the feet almost.  On top of the red fabric is a fancier accent piece in black with silver trim and tassels.  I think it is a mix of these accessories from LBH and SQQ in the Korean cover here.  With the shape of SQQ’s being a slightly better match - minus the tasseled pendant.
Tumblr media
5.) Banbi jacket/coat - white with red trim and “artistic” choice collar.  The jacket is a short sleeve one with a red cuff/trim that is clearly an under layer but I would attach it to the white jacket to make my life easier and less sweaty.  The popped collar baffles me - is it sort of like a jacket with a lapel-ish collar?  It gives me vibes of the jackets that Sakamoto and Takasugi wear in Gintama and shogunate officials which are also anachronistic by design in a series like Gintama.  Or maybe a better comparison is the donghua for Thousand Autumns and Yan Wushi’s open collar layer?
Tumblr media
It looks like the neck placket itself is thick in the middle and normal on the outside.  I’ve attempted to make a quick example of what I think this looks like here.
Tumblr media
I think this is what I would do to sew it onto the jacket and make sure to add interfacing and iron it well. I would do these five layers if I wanted to cosplay this LBH outfit.  The zhong yi layer is really important since that is where you are gonna sweat the most, I found it worked well with my 13 hours of WKX with a wig in LA having to stand outside in lines in the summer temps. Good luck!

Maybe I'm repeating myself, but I'm a stubborn person. I also really like the photo shoot (and of course the interview) for Harper's Bazaar magazine. Whoever came up with this style, chose the clothes and where the photos were taken deserves huge applause. The photos from this session are amazing. On the occasion of the anniversary of the WOH broadcast, I wanted to stay in the atmosphere related to WOH. And these photos fit this atmosphere very, very strongly. However, for a change, I decided on black and white. From many ZZH photos, I chose this one in black and white. I have written many times why I like such photos, I will not write it anymore. I want to focus on the photo. A photo referring to the WOH series on various levels. It's nice for the viewer to find these references. It is known that ZZH played the role of ZZS. An inseparable element of ZZS's journeys was the waterskin. In the photo, ZZH is holding such a waterskin. Another thing is the way ZZH sits, it reminds us of the way WKX sat when he watched ZZS fighting the ghosts. This is the second episode of WOH. ZZH was arranged in the same style, as if ZZS was a mirror image of WKX. And just as WKX held a bottle of alcohol, ZZH holds a bottle of alcohol. ZZH also has a similar facial expression to GJ while playing WKX. ZZH, dressed in an Adidas outfit that suits his personality, looks dignified here. Even regally, as if he were a king sitting on a throne and looking at his subjects. I like the expression on ZZH's face, which is hard to read here. Equally difficult to decipher was WKX's facial expression. But I think ZZH is more majestic here (sorry to all the GJ fans), and this black and white photo highlights it even more. It's hard for me to take my eyes off this photo. Just like the rest. Well, this is real ZZH. .

Hi again...... How are you? I love reading your answers and your blog.....Make me want to re-read the book TGCF (again) and re-watch CQL (again)....😄
If you don't mind me asking, can I ask your top 5 (or top 3) favorite characters from Word of Honor? And your top 5 favorite moments from the drama? Sorry if you've answered this question before....Thanks....
HI MY BELOVED yes please keep asking me things i love coming up with answers!!!
ngl i’ve not watched WOH/SHL in a while, i’ve been planning to rewatch soon but i’ll do my best here!! let’s see how long this post gets :^)
top 5 favourite characters:
1. zhou zishu. i am so weak for zhang zhehan and his pretty face and his glorious side profile and all the little details that he put into this character. his slow smiles of wonderment as he’s falling in love. god. i’ll admit, it took me a while to like him as much as i liked wen kexing, but ultimately zzs is THE backbone of the show, it’s his story of finding love, regaining the desire to live, and finding meaning in having someone that you want to spend your life with. after reading qi ye i also appreciate zzs’s backstory more and i’m rooting for him!!! to find love and be free from the world of politics and corruption!!!
2. wen kexing. MY BOY HE WAS MY FAVE THE MOMENT HE STEPPED OUT ON SCREEN. ok ngl rewatching is kinda hard bc i keep noticing all the ways gong jun is a less experienced actor, but god when i first saw him. i thought he was SO beautiful it was such a perfect casting. i love his stupid pretentious flirting and his corny attitude and his fake fake smiles that only barely hide his feelings. the way he simply does not process emotions. what a ridiculous man. i want 20 of him
3. ye baiyi YOOOOOOO INSTANT CLASSIC. BEST CHARACTER EVER WRITTEN FOR TELEVISION. seriously though i am obsessed with this horrible little man??? the important thing to understand, ye baiyi in the novel is an 80 year old man stuck in a 20 year old body. that’s funny on its own, but ye baiyi in the show is a 20 year old guy who has lived for 80 years. imaging being gay and in your twenties forever. fuck. i too would be petty, exhausted, constantly pissed, and constantly roasting the shit out of baby gays. he’s just so funny oh my god. what a legend
4. gu xiang. my girlbossssssss i am very partial to the colour purple and so she gets points for that. also i love her outfits. i love that zhou ye added so much more dimension to ah xiang in her portrayal. gu xiang is someone who grew up around trauma and violence, yet she chooses to be good and kind and optimistic in her own way. i love the sibling/master dynamic with wkx, her relationships with the other members of ghost valley, her entire romance with cao weining. god that romance—the awful vulnerability of that scene when he saw her kill the beggar (who turned out to be an assassin). the fear of showing someone what you had to become to survive. you’re not proud of it, but you’re not the least bit ashamed, and yet it’s terrifying that they could reject you for it. god. god. god. they. her. ahuggh
5. gao xiaolian. maybe a surprising one but this girl just stuck in my head so much. this show really did so well with its women??? gao xiaolian initially exemplifies a sort of “ideal” weak, pure, feminine stereotype, a first in contrast to the many dangerous and colourful women of ghost valley and the scorpions. and yet her strength stands out immediately — her care for her father, her sense of duty, her no-nonsense approach to things. she’s remarkably clearheaded, and i love that she chose mercy over revenge in the end; it’s not necessarily what the show agrees is right, but because it’s her stance. and she’s sticking to it.
honorarable mentions: shen shen, xie’er, chengling, jby and wu xi because i’m BIASED, also helian yi deserved better <3
top 3 scenes:
1. wenzhou saying each other’s names three times — will anything ever match this moment. i still get chills thinking about that scene holy shit. i watch it over and over it haunts my dreams how could they even come up with this scene let alone film it and show it to the world. something shl drives home is the simplicity of real happiness (“only when i met you did i discover what a simple thing it is to be happy” screaming crying choking) and this scene says it all. “to be able to sit here, in the daylight. have someone call my name like that. that would be good.” and zzh’s line delivery. drives me nuts
2. the confrontation with ye baiyi. another iconic scene for the ages. the way they had the exact same plan because they’re zhiji. the way wen kexing runs because he’s feeling too much and he’s scared. this scene is zhou zishu grabbing him by the shoulders and saying—it doesn’t matter to me. it doesn’t matter. i knew all along and i loved you anyway. i love you and i am with you; your fate will be my fate now. my favourite thing about the scene has to be after the confrontation, when the tension is gone. and they go right back to bickering and teasing each other. zhou zishus exasperated “what do you think i was gonna do”. the bitching and complaining. yeah i’d die with u. but i’m gonna remind u that you’re a lotta work. chefs kiss perfection
3. gu xiang going apeshit after cao weinings death. zhou ye’s florence pugh Acting moment. god. so good. holy shit. u simply don’t get that in historical dramas especially from female characters. jesus fucking christ holy shit. i was sobbing. the grief and shock and rage and outrage; like, she loved cao weining and cao weining was such a good boy, but it just boils down to. how could they do that??? how could they just do that???? they just came in and destroyed something that was good, that was their plan all along and that’s it and his life is just over and now there’s just nothing???? and gu xiang just rages and rages and it’s about revenge but it’s barely even about that, she doesn’t even get to make the murderer pay, it’s just lashing out against the absolute senseless violence that just happened here. catharsis, my literature teacher might say. oh god i am tearing up
honourable mention: that scene where wen kexing goes apeshit and monologues over someone’s grave. i cannot for the life of me remember when that happened but i remember watching that when the episodes were coming out and being THRILLED bc that kind of scene has to be a theatre kid’s DREAM to perform. anyway i need to rewatch shl
