he just BECOMES as yggdrasil? he just, you don't understand, he just becomes the tree? the core of time itself? he just wields the power of literal gods and transforms the flow of all timelines into a tree, using the timelines themselves as the fibers and pathways to create a self-supporting structure that he feeds his own power through like life-support? for all of eternity? to keep everyone and everything in existence EXISTING??? he just takes the form of the thing he has grown up knowing about, yggdrasil, for his whole life, dreaming of conquering all sentient life forms on all the trees branches, and instead of conquering it, he creates and powers and guides the very flow of time itself that those people will freely live upon? the symbolism. i'm dying, the symbolism. yall. yalllll.

The exact same scene, and yet an entire lifetime apart. There is no better illustration of the profoundly transformative impact Mobius had on Loki’s character from the beginning to the end of his show.

In the first episode, Loki’s posture is stiff, cold, abrasive, unyielding. His arms are crossed to shield his body and distance himself from everyone around him. He neither trusts nor is trusted by anyone. He sees every interaction as a game to be won, an exercise only in manipulation and deceit. In the final episode, Loki’s posture is open, genuine, relaxed, attentive. He faces Mobius fully, leans forward to give his full attention. The scenes are brilliantly shot to put distance between Loki and everyone else in 1x1 and changes to close-ups in 2x6 to illustrate that personal connection, to show how much more open and intimate and sincere they are with each other. Mobius has taught him to trust and be trustworthy, to value the advice and wisdom of his dearest friend. He no longer deflects, attacks, or hides himself, he seeks Mobius’ comfort and opinion and thanks him for everything Mobius has done for him.

Loki returns to the beginning a truly changed person and that is what gave him the strength to accept his burden in the end.

I know everyone wants stories with happy endings, and they all hate when the main characters die, and insist well what's the point of the story then, it didn't matter at all! they died!

but.

I don't know. do the stories of those who die at the end not matter at all?

because if that's the case, I have news about the stories told by everyone who has ever lived in this world.

we all die at the end. we are all doomed by the narrative.

but our stories still matter.

#writing #writers on tumblr #writerscommunity #listen it can be done well it can be done poorly #but i dont get this hatred of characters dying at the end and everyone not getting their happy ending #its not about realism #its about what the author is trying to say #some characters die because they need to die #because it fulfills their character arc it enhances it #it makes a difference #and there is catharsis in understanding that sometimes people die for a good cause for a glorious purpose #we all die #isnt there relief in seeing a story where our special friends die but it mattered in the end and death was something meaningful #if it was embraced with dignity #am i making any sense #i just know my own death wont matter #i like following stories where the mc dies but #it meant something the way mine will not #and the vast majority of people do not die for a good cause or with purpose #and those who do are heroes in our reality #but why are they so reviled in fiction #let your characters deaths mean something
