(AU) The Witch-King Tar-Míriel
"No man can kill me." _________________________________________________________
@merilles made me feral about the idea of Tar-Míriel being the Witch-King of Angmar so I had to draw it

while I respect the neat character foiling and also raw Vibes of Tar-Miriel being the Witch-King, I simply cannot endure the tragedy of it. It’s not a #girlboss move, to seize even “evil” power to be a Queen on her own at last—it’s the reverse. The Nazgûl have no power of their own. Parallels to Eowyn’s despair and attempts to break her cage are cool, but you officially hit the threshold of my personal tolerance for tragedy if you ask me to endure Tar-Miriel losing not just her home to Sauron, not just the hearts of her people and the literal physical island, not just what little power she had left and finally her life—and then also you want him to steal the Gift Eru gave her and her very will? I can’t do it! I can enjoy every other beautiful tragedy in these books, but this one is too sad!

Nugu gurunkilu bard gurutu Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die
My first piece for @tolkienrsb 2022, written for by the wonderful @bloodwingblackbird | BloodwingBlackbird (AO3) Keep an eye out for the fic coming on September 9, it's a great one!
art rambles! This is my first time actually trying digital painting and... it took. So Long. I'm extraordinarily pleased by the results so it was worth it but dang. I traced and modified a vector of the LotRMovie! Witch King's crown to reference for hers, and I'm quite happy with it, I think it's suitably ominous. The necklace was a last-minute addition but I love it. Zoom in on the chain links specifically, they're little eyes! Also her actual eyes- they're very detailed and I'm proud of them.
Her ears are a little more pointy-looking than I intended but I don't really mind. Call it a Numenorian thing. I was using my own face for reference and lighting and ended up exaggerating them a little as I was changing other features. Also, it's very funny to me that I can still see the unintentional resemblance between us, even after doing my best to change it. I think it's the face shape mostly, but it's a good thing to keep in mind for future endeavors: get more references!
Finding a half-decent Black Speech translation of the whole ring poem was both easier and harder than I expected. The tengwar was a pain to format but I'm okay with it. Tecendil is my savior- they even have different fonts! I used Annatar Italic, of course :)

What If Tar-Miriel was trans?
(First of all, I excuse if some stuff here isn’t accurate about transgender and that stuff. I only know that the person identifies as another sex than the one they’re assigned at birth. I saw many things about Tar-Miriel being the witch king of Angmar, so my brain then came up with this idea,)
Warnings; Miriel has a rough life.
-----------------------------------------
-Tar-Miriel might have been born a girl, but maybe she started having conflicted feelings about her gender as a female when growing up.
-She felt restrained when she wasn’t allowed to do things and hobbies all the sons of other lords were allowed to do, and she found so little joy in things girls and maidens did.
-Maybe she didn’t feel like she belonged among other noble ladies and women. Even though; she should. And at one point, she started feeling uncomfortable being referred to as a girl and didn’t like when people called her a little princess, lady, or a pretty girl.
-Maybe she started hating dresses at one point because they were uncomfortable, and people kept telling her to wear them like a princess. She felt like can’t breathe freely because of them.
-She would throw them out of the window in a fit of rage and calm down when she wore pants and felt free in her legs. Her father and maids always thought she didn’t like them, but she couldn't bring herself to tell them that she hated dresses and only wished to wear pants for comfort.
-She couldn't ask her father to change her wardrobe and say she felt more comfortable wearing pants than dresses because ladies should dress like ladies, not like men.
-Tar-Miriel found herself more casual and comfortable with a couple of noble sons she managed to befriend. They treated her like a princess at first, but after some time she felt like she was one of them. She didn’t mind getting rough while playing, she had much more energy, and at some points, she felt like she could relate with them.
-Maybe at one point those boys accidentally forgot she was a girl, and she didn’t even realize they referred to her as a boy until one of the adults told her friends to behave around a princess.
-Miriel would feel shocked that she didn’t mind when someone referred to her as a boy. She liked it and felt much like herself. She wished to tell her father about it, but then came the fear.
-It was the sheer pressure everyone told her about being a woman, and because of that, she couldn't bring herself to say that to her sweet father. A girl who felt more like a boy. It was considered taboo, and she didn’t want to bring trouble to her father, especially when he loved her as a daughter.
-So, in the end, she sucked her feelings in and tried to embrace her female identity. Even though; it was hard when she didn’t feel like one.
-Her growth was a task, especially when her body looked a bit different than it was supposed to be for a woman.
-She had feminine parts, and her face was beautiful, but she grew up to be unusually tall, and her shoulders, arms, and legs were broader and less slender. Her chest didn’t pop out much, and wearing a dress became a bit more troublesome because she needed specially tailored dresses.
-She started hating dresses again because they were uncomfortable and didn’t sit well with her unusual figure.
-She then tried robes. Surprisingly they fit, and she felt much better in them.
-She couldn't let anyone see her wearing clothes meant for men, so she made a habit of wearing them and trousers in secret and alone.
-She felt content when she didn’t need to worry about moving and wearing neck-revealing dresses. She felt less of the woman everyone tells her to be.
-Tar-Miriel’s feelings about being a man resurfaced, and she started thinking.
-She dressed like a man, and surprisingly she managed to make herself look like one, feeling happy about it. Wearing a chest wrap was a bit troublesome at first, but since she didn’t have a lot of breasts in the first place, it was easy, and she felt better.
-She realized she wanted to be a man and thought about telling her father about it. He has always loved her and was understanding of everything. People always made it troublesome for him since he only had a daughter, they would most likely be more content with a son, and Miriel was alright with that.
-Miriel would have slowly talked about the matter with her father, and to her happiness, her father didn’t think foul about it. In his point, people had the right to be unique in their way, and he had tried to normalize unusual things for his subject. It was difficult because his advisors did not take his word seriously.
-Miriel would have felt more confident and ready to reveal her feelings about being a man to him, but then the unfortunate happened, and her father fell deadly ill.
-She was devastated when he died, and the rulership rightfully fell into her hands. It was so soon then her cousin Ar-Pharazon forced her hand into marriage and took away her rights as the rightful ruler of Numenor.
-It would have a devastating effect on her, and she felt disgusted about her body after the terrible wedding night with a man she never wanted to marry.
-The slow realization that she is now forever to be a wife to a hypocrite and a mental breakpoint that she could not do anything about it. She could not even use her own name anymore, having to be called Ar-Zimraphel.
-Miriel never showed love toward Ar-Pharazon because it was undeserved. She never showed a smile again, and people kept telling her to be happy about the marriage. She would sneer and roll her eyes because behind the doors. The marriage was anything but happy.
-She would often face ridicule for being less of a woman. Ar-Pharazon made sure of that and wasn’t much pleased with her less womanly features.
-He was controlling and did everything to make her self-worth diminish. She felt more like an object than a person.
-Luckily, Ar-Pharazon thought he could make her want him because, in his eyes, women were nothing but to bear children and warm the bed. He thought neglecting her would make a change, but Tar-Miriel never found attraction to any man in her life nor craved his touch. She loved the quiet when he was not around, making him angry that he was not getting his way with her.
-Miriel hated being called by the name her husband forced upon her. She had to respond in public, but in private, she never heeded his call when he referred her with that name. He might be able to force a name upon her for the public eye, but he will never strip away the name her father had given her.
-Her life would have been difficult, trapped in a forced marriage, forced to feel like a woman, and everything became worthless in her mind.
-Ar-Pharazon, in his foolishness, captured the dark lord and brought the maia into Numenor. She knew her home and people were doomed when the hypocrite had allowed the deceiver's words to enthrall his creed for power and immortality, turning Sauron into his trusted advisor.
-Tar-Miriel tried to fight back. She tried to fight back for her home and the innocent people, who soon got subjected to the madness that followed under Tar-Mairon's rule.
-It was a hopeless fight, then the deceiver came to her with a ring.
-Ar-Pharazon was a fool in Mairon’s eyes, but she had the potential to become something much greater than the creed-filled king. Mairon knew about her trapped position and that she identified more as a man than a woman. He promised her freedom from her oppressors. And rulership outside of Numenor, not as a queen, but as a king.
-Tar-Miriel felt conflicted because it would mean an alliance with him and allow the destruction of Numenor, but her wish to be free from it all became powerful.
-She had been nothing but a pretty face in the court. She was not a queen and her people had turned their backs on her long ago. Is it wrong of her to wish for something and truly have it when given to her?
-Abandoning her morals for the people she loved no more, she accepted the offer and took the ring.
-It was a horrible sight to see her home and the innocent people drown in the waves as Numenor fell and the sky thundered with wrath unimaginable.
-She stood on the edge of the mountain, giving her last pitying look at the innocent people. She did not cry or wail for mercy. Instead, she gave her people her final apology until the waves took her.
-Her death did not bring pain. She felt peaceful, the ring resonated, and her spirit freed itself from her mortal body.
-Her spirit traveled to the land of Angmar, and she gained a new form. Her form was terrible to look at, but she felt peaceful with it because she shaped it into her image.
-She was satisfied because she was no longer a pretty girl, a princess, or a wife. He was a warrior, the dark lord's loyal servant, leader of the Nazgul, and the rightful king.
-He was the Witch-king of Angmar.
(I don’t know, but I think this is a reasonable way how she could be the witch king. I hoped you liked it,)

Is Halbrand Sauron? Probably.
Spoilers ahead!
TL;DR: it’s too lazy for him to be Aragorn 2.0- they want us so badly to come to the conclusion that he’s a lost king, it is too easy for that to be the truth. He’s in the right place at the right time to fill the role of Sauron in Numenor and he is of the right, charming, slippery, calculating disposition.
My main reason is they’re laying on this idea of him being Aragorn 2.0 way too thick and it’s the biggest red herring out there. We’ve seen the ‘lost king fulfilling his fate’ story already in the Lord of the Rings and in the Hobbit and it’s tired and lazy and boring.
So what does Sauron want to do in the books? He wants to infiltrate Numenor and recruit the people there to his side and he successfully does that over years of lies and manipulation when the majority of Numenoreans are poisoned against elves, Valar, and each other because of him. Sauron’s end goal in Numenor is ultimate control.
Now let’s look at the evidence in the first three episodes.
Episode 1:
Gil Galad says that he and Elrond foresaw that if Galadriel had continued trying to stop Sauron, she would inadvertently help him
Episode 2:
When the sea monster comes towards the raft, Halbrand advises to stand still to avoid detection when no one else suggests it and it initially works as it doesnt attack them - how would someone from a landlocked region have any knowledge of an ancient sea monster?
Galadriel asked why he separated his raft from the main one to save himself and he said ‘why be part of the larger target?’ - this could be alluding to the fact that Sauron’s forces are in central middle earth while he’s in the middle of the ocean
He talks about suffering and losing his home - Sauron served Morgoth in the First Age and their home was in Angband which was destroyed by the Valar in the War of Wrath. Sauron lost his home and he lost his master
Galadriel tells Halbrand to bind himself to her which is pretty loaded language when she could have just told him to tie himself to her. It’s at this point that he could have let Galadriel die, but he may already know that she could provide him with leverage in the future.
Episode 3 is where it gets way more obvious
Sauron is a charmer - in the books, Celebrimbor is all but in love with him when he’s in disguise. Halbrand flirts with Galadriel and charms her and goes above and beyond for her, like taking Finrod’s dagger from Elendil to give back to her
The moment he gets a bit of freedom, Halbrand goes to a blacksmith and asks for work and says his work is the best the blacksmith will have ever seen. Sauron is a mighty smith who learned under Aule, the god of smithery. Why’s he so set on having access to a smithy? He goes so far as theft to enable his pathway to work
Sauron took the name of Lord of Gifts when he was disguised with the elves, and what does he do in the tavern? Orders rounds of drinks for everyone
When he’s cornered in the alleyway he fights off 5 strong Numenorians with barely a scratch - Sauron was skilled in hand-to-hand combat
He’s eager to appease Tar-Miriel the queen and be seen as trustworthy. Yes, he is captive at the moment, but he has an easy charm even with great lords and ladies that do not befit his station
The figure at the end of the episode is another red herring - it’s not Sauron himself, but a commander of his, perhaps even the Witch-King of Angmar?
It makes sense that Sauron himself would be far away from the Southlands and the centre of his power when he knows that the elves keep watch - whether that be Gil-Galad from afar, or the Silvan elves who are now withdrawing.
His current location of Numenor where Sauron wants to be, and he is developing his relationship with Galadriel who is key to the entire race of elves. If he can manipulate her, he has an easy journey ahead of him. Remember, she ends up being a ring-bearer herself and although her ring is not made by Sauron, her fate is tied to the One Ring and to Sauron.
He’s also wanting to start crafting whatever and promises his work will be the best. He’s already privy to the two factions in Numenor - those who follow the old king and those who follow the queen - and is beginning to learn more about them.
As already said, he’s a charmer, he’s likeable, he has some sense of destiny about him, and he’s good-looking to boot. That’s Sauron’s go-to disguise. To many people familiar with the lore, it seems obvious that Halbrand is not the good guy Galadriel wants him to be. I think this will also lead into conflict between Gil Galad, Elrond, and Galadriel and a decline in her confidence and place in the world over the coming seasons, along with her rising from the ashes.

Right There by RaisingCaiin - T - 1.3k - Beor/Finrod - Fluff! Fluff as far as the eye can see!
Sister, Sister by swanmaiden - T - 925 - Aredhel & Turgon - Breaking my HEART with this look at Aredhel and Turgon's relationship through the years.
* The Sleep of Flowers by Innin - E - 2.4k - Galadriel/Melian - Melian weaves teaching magic and sex together. A really sweet and also hot scene for them!
Statue of an Elven Woman by welcoming_disaster - M - 1.2k - Indis/Nerdanel - You need a fucking chainsaw to cut the tension here.
* Strength Like a Tower by potatoesanddreams - G - 794 - This fic almost made me cry over a building. Fantastic look at how Elves connect to their environment.
Stone Toys by welcoming_disaster - E - 3.3k - Indis/Nerdanel - The power dynamics here are so hot.
* Sweet Violets and Golden Cowslip by StarSpray - T - 1.6k - Absolutely amazing post-Sirion dynamics. Lalwen survives past the Third Kinslaying and has to confront what the Noldor have become.
This Now, This Us by crownlessliestheking - G - 1.3k - Indis/Miriel - Their dialogue is so fun here.
Thy Brothers' Keeper by sallysavestheday - G - 970 - Tasty Finwean family drama...Finarfin wearies of playing the peacekeeper.
Torn in Two by Alantie - G - 1.5k - Celebrian & Finrod - Celebrian meets her uncle Finrod in Aman. I really loved their bonding experiences here <3
Ainur
Bite Thy Wings and Let Thee Crawl by am_fae - E - 4.7k - I am literally not joking that this fetish porn fic has one of the best portrayals of Melkor and his careless boundless cruelty that I've ever read. RIP Maglor.
* More Ferven Flight by crownlessliestheking - E - 9k - Ingwe/Manwe - Some of the most beautiful porn I've ever read and a delicious blending of sex and worship from Ingwe's perspective. The author does an excellent job with the strangeness and overwhelmingness of being with a Vala.
One Acquainted with the Night by Grundy - G - 2k - The other Ainur don't really understand Melian's grief.
Scripts and Tongues by am_fae - M - 977 - Cirdan/Gandalf - Let Gandalf sext!
Webs and Weavings by Loriand_Lost - E - 5.1k - Ungoliant/Vaire - This fic does such a marvelous job of capturing the other-ness of Ungoliant.
Men
Brushstrokes by theworldisquietheretooquiet - T - 2.1k - Finduilas/Nienor - This one is so cuuuuute.
The Nameless Black of a Name by Ias - M - 8.1k - Finduilas/Nienor - They find purpose and home together in the wake of their tragedies. Love here how Finduilas can feel the darkness on Nienor's fate, similar to how characters comment on Turin's in canon.
Nothing Beside Remains by swanmaiden - T - 842 - Tar-Miriel/Uinen - This author writes such deliciously twisted femslash and this is no exception. Uinen's unwillingness to let go of Tar-Miriel's body makes sense when a body for her is nothing more than a decoration.
The Sea-King's Wife by swanmaiden - E - 300 - Tar-Miriel/Uinen - Uinen should be queen of tentacle porn.
The Tapestry by Zdenka - T - 1.2k - Theodwyn & Miriel - From one seamstress to another, through the ages.
Threads of Gold by Zdenka - T - 2.7k - Finduilas/Nienor - These two finding healing together is the best part of this ship TT_TT
Through These Old Grounds of Memory by Cinaed - T - 2.8k - Finduilas/Nienor - This fic captures their feelings so well. And here, they get a happy ending!
Where the Lilies Grow by Elleth - T - 1.7k - Finduilas/Nienor - Nienor's inexperience in romance does not stop her XD You can definitely tell she's Hurin's daughter here!

An alternate fate?
Before discovering the Tar-Miriel-is-the-Witch-King fanon, I sometimes imagined that she could have somehow been saved from the Wave, either by Uinen, Ulmo or Eru Himself.

For this year’s TRSB, I had the pleasure of working with the fantastic @an-eldritch-peredhil on their amazing Witch King Tar-Miriel art and prompt.
Check out the whole amazing art here: https://an-eldritch-peredhel.tumblr.com/post/693761911785996288/the-witch-king
Read the fic at:https://archiveofourown.org/works/41550987
Nature teaches beasts to know their friends
Rating: Mature
Warnings: implied/referenced non-con, domestic violence, human sacrifice
Relationships: focused on the relationships between Tar-Miriel, Sauron, and Ar-Pharazon in the last days of Numenor, with a smidge of Tar-Miriel/ofc because I am nothing if not predictable.
Characters: Tar-Miriel, Sauron, Ar-Pharazon, plus various cameos and flashbacks.
Word Count: 13117
Summary: Tar-Miriel, last queen of Numenor reigns in name only. Isolated and hopeless, she seeks little more than survival. As the doom of Numenor draws near, she finds herself facing unexpected temptations and strange alliances.
Many thanks to @admirablemonster and @jamcake-muses for cheerleading/beta reading and to the @tolkienrsb mod team.

Hey hey! My name's Emy, 25 NB, ey/em/any pronouns, in desparate need of more Tolkien content with a partner that is 21+, writing charas that are also 21+. On my hands and knees begging 🙏 I have two specific ships in mind, one MxM and the other MxF, but I am absolutely okay with non-romance plots as well as I think they would be a lot of fun!
Here are the characters I play:
Tar-Miriel (Silmarillion), AKA Witch-King of Angmar (LOTR). - Very AU/Headcanon based, but Witchking!Miriel has my heart
Thorin Oakenshield (The Hobbit)
Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit)
Here are the ships I'm looking for. Bolded has current interest:
Tar-Miriel/Elendil - very much friends to lovers to enemies vibes here. Also good with unrequited/onesided feels on Miriel's part as that could be v juicy to play out, or this can be played platonically too.
Tar-Miriel/OFC - would love some WLW drama.
Thorin/Bilbo - It's a classic, but my love for the ship has been reignited after 10ish years, would love to play it again.
Thorin/OMC - down for MLM drama.
Non-romance plots:
Thorin - Anything with the dwarves pre-Quest for Erebor, especially during The War of the Dwarves and Orcs, or the building of Ered Luin. Imo that is an extremely interesting period of time that is hardly ever covered and I am endlessly thirsty for it needless to say.
Tar-Miriel - Evil plottages with the Witch-King are yes. Or, better yet, could play out a political intrigue setting pre-fall of Numenor. Tbh it'd be quite fun.
Bilbo - Someone come bother this kooky old man post-Quest for Erebor I feel like he'd just be an absolute riot to be around. Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin are a plus here. That & threads with members of the Company, like Balin or Ori, or even his old pal Elrond, would be fun as well!
Alternate Universes
If so desired, I am absolutely A-OK with plotting out an AU verse, feel free to discuss with me via DMs.
If interested, add me on discord @ thewhisperingwood !

Silm ask game—🤔
🤔 Tell us one of your favorite Silm headcanons. Can be one that's out in the wild or a personal one!
1–Tar-Miriel is the Witch King of Angmar. Sauron realized she was the much savvier political ally, and he was able to manipulate her with a promise of getting back the power that was taken from her
1b—extra bonus points if Miriel wasn’t betrayed or fucked over and had some agency for once in her narrative
2– Annatar could not get over Celebrimbor’s death and ended up resurrecting him. Celebrimbor later became the Mouth of Sauron, and our fave dark lord earned his reputation as a necromancer
