02/23 Update

Howdy hey! How is everyone? It feels like January has lasted forever. This one hasn’t been a particularly great one for me, we had a death in the family and needed to attend a sudden out-of-state funeral, then immediately afterwards I caught a stomach bug from hell and was out of commission for a while. I’m finally feeling normal again, and my appetite is coming back.

  Work has been kind to me about the absences, but now my paychecks are suffering for it…  I don’t want to open commissions once I’m done with this project but I feel like I may need to? We’ll see.

  And speaking of that project, it’s progressing well, I just keep forgetting to screenshot how it’s coming along! I know I said it’d be done in January, but it’s looking more like February after these delays.

  I’m looking forward to TFF here in March! Who all else is going? We’ve got a room at the main hotel, and it’ll be my birthday con! I don’t think I’ll be making conbadges this year though. Just drinking and hanging with friends and hopefully having a good time. I’m really hoping I have some expendable money for dealers den, so that may be another reason to open commissions…

WIP Intro

Title: The Foolish, Foolish Stars

Genre: Fantasy, comedy, sci-fi, adventure.

Status: brainstorming, outlining (estimate length 7 to 12k)

Themes/tropes: court intrigue, prophecies, the Trickster character, absurd comedy, sci-fi empires.

Description:

Being a fool is not an easy profession. You're a spy, a diplomat, an actor, and an entertainer all at once, and failing at any of these will get your head on the chopping block faster than you'll be able to jingle your bells. The list of occupational hazards, is, in fact, ridiculously long, but being abducted by aliens is not one of them. Irik, a smart and capable Jest at the king's court, finds themselves in an unusual position of being offered the rulership of an alien empire. Why them? Why now? And what does a certain ancient prophecy have to do with all of this?

about me (jan. 1, 2021)

all right, new year, new me, and this year i’m going to finish a draft (she said, overconfidently)! so here i am doing things to distract myself from writing making a writeblr to get writer friends and motivate myself. i guess.

my name is kit! you may know me as @katarahairloopies! i’m 18, a freshman in college, and i’m queer (lesbian, ace, maybe nonbinary?). i read a lot, and i write a lot. like everyone else, i’ve always wanted to be a published writer, so, you know. we’ll see.

i have been trying to write a novel since i was 8 i’ve been trying to write this one particular novel since may 2020. my first draft reached about 60,000 words circa december and then i promptly realized it was, in fact, two novels. so! i have two projects now:

small dead things -- this is my priority at the moment. it’s about wren, an eighteen-year-old lesbian dealing with her mother’s illness, leaving home for the first time, and reckoning with what her mother never told her about her past. genre is pretentious literary fiction, as is almost all of what i read and write. there's intrigue! death! dark family secrets! overlong meditations on birds! what more could you want? ((i’ve been drafting for about a day now, and the word count is at 2021 words. total coincidence, but what a funny coincidence to have.))

the flesh failures -- this is more ambitious project and far outside my comfort, “write what you know” zone. no idea if it’ll actually get written--it would need a lot of research--but if it did, it would follow two siblings, john paul and ellen, circa the early 80s. ((word count at this moment is literally only 372 words. it exists merely in my head.))

(both titles are extremely preliminary and will almost certainly not be the actual titles. i cannot title things. this is a pattern.)

2021 goals that seem maybe reasonable idk !!!!!

to write at least one sentence on one of my original projects every day

to finish the first draft of small dead things

to write 100,000 words on both of my original projects, combined

so! there it is! i think that i’m going to be using this blog more like a journal of my writing progress, to look back on and such.

synopsis -

It's a story as old as time itself: Eighteen year old Latin student D.A. Acardi bumps into Florence Siddal on the way to class and falls hopelessly in love. Acardi's friends are used to them crushing on strangers, but they insist that it's different this time. They'll muster up the courage to actually hold a conversation with her. It could be something great! 

But before any of that can happen, Florence turns up dead, and Acardi's the one who finds the body. When their embarrassing love sonnets are discovered, Florence's friends confront Acardi for answers on her death, believing them to have dated Florence. Now Acardi must decipher the clues that she left behind, but they'll need help from an idol of theirs, the famed poet and professor Vincent Muso. The more Acardi finds out about Florence and Vincent, the more their carefully-constructed life falls apart, and once the painful truth comes out, they're not sure if they'll survive.

quite early in me liking spones i fell in love with the idea that comes from a novel but i just took that one idea, even though the novel is good and has a lot of good spones-y moments, which is Spock getting his own ship and McCoy being his CMO... which, in the novel, happens after Kirk’s death

and I usually include it in my mind’s timeline whenever I think about post TFF spones

but now, when I’m more at peace with just being films? what films? who cares about them? I keep thinking about the same scenario but immediately after the 5ym

Kirk just accepts admiralty because that’s the path he chose (was it good or not, that’s for him to find out) and when Spock and McCoy think about their future, McCoy brings up the question of Spock getting his own command (it was also something that Kirk tried to offer to Spock) and while unsure, since it were both Kirk and McCoy who told him that he should take over the Enterprise, he eventually accepts

and McCoy tags along because he can’t let Spock do it alone, which would also allow me to finally use this

“I can’t believe you’ve talked me into this,” McCoy grumbled, fixing the collar of his uniform. “I did no such thing, Doctor. As I recall your words were ‘I can’t let you go alone.’” McCoy pursed his lips and looked at the ground. “Well, someone needs to keep an eye on you.” “And I welcome your company.” McCoy gave him a startled look, which slowly turned into a small smile. A warm feeling spread through Spock’s body. It happened every time McCoy smiled at him, and it had been years since Spock stopped fighting it.

and now when Spock is the captain, Uhura his XO, and McCoy the CMO, Spock and McCoy need to figure out how it would work without Kirk around... and sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn’t, but they’re figuring it out and learning even more things about themselves and they’re also letting that something both of them felt for a while blossom

stuff that could be included: 

them accompanying Sarek somewhere

Spock figuring out that command really isn’t his forte (so they either become instructors at the Academy or Spock’s diplomatic career accelerates...)

and I need to stop thinking about all this stuff and go back to my wip lol i mean, with some tweaks, it could just be a part of the same universe but still
