“I don’t really get why Sky is accused of cheating on Bloom. While he didn’t even love Diaspro, and to my knowledge they weren’t even dating. Sky was basically forced to hang with her. It was an arranged marriage. This was out of Sky’s control. Did he really have any other choice?” -Anon

What upset me most about season 8:
To begin with, the scriptwriters suddenly decided to introduce unprecedented ambiguity in the villains. And this sudden backstory about Icy was an even bigger surprise. But the writers didn’t even give the couple Riven and Darcy a chance. Their meeting was a complete disappointment for me. There were no conversations between them, despite the fact that they dated in the first season. But the worst thing is the clown-like light in which Darcy is shown in this episode.

Icy's season 8 backstory is fine, actually
Let me start off by saying that IT IS TRUE that the execution could have been better, that it's a huge retcon on the character, that it came really late in the series. On the other hand, nothing after the first movie was exactly in the plans so the last two points are sort of weak.
Nearly every fanfiction I've read has a better backstory for the Trix (allow me a moment of self-appreciation, even mine does). I am not fond of Icy and Bloom having specular stories (Roxy was enough), although I see why the writers thought it was a good idea. However, that is not what I want to discuss.
Generally people complain about 4 things:
1) the Trix's sisterhood
2) Icy's connection to the Ancestral Witches
3) the fact that the Trix keep coming back
4) how out of the blue the backstory is
While point 4 is legit for the reasons listed above, the others are not.
1) The only evidence of the Trix being blood sisters comes from something Straffi said once like a decade ago.
The series (pre s8) goes against the Trix being blood sisters in s3, when they don't recognize each other after falling in the waters of the Black Willow.
The comics go against the Trix being blood sisters as well: in number 27 Icy recalls her childhood, saying that she used to play with Darcy, Stormy and Darko in a park where their babysitters brought them. They grew up together, but as friends.
Their design and characterization goes against them being blood sisters too: how are they all enrolled in Cloudtower at the same year if they have different ages (which is a very common headcanon)? Plus, their physical appearance tells clearly enough that they're not twins, since they would at least share some traits.
Not to mention that Darcy and Stormy could still be blood sisters.
The fact that they call each other sisters is irrelevant because there are several contexts where people call each other "brother" or "sister" but aren't siblings.
2) Icy's backstory does not contradict the fact that she is the descendant of Belladonna.
The Ancestral Witches are older than Valtor. This means that their bloodline crosses millennia. Consequently, they can be the ancestors of the Trix and not be their grandmas. Icy being a princess doesn't mean she can't have an infamous ancestor somewhere up her family tree (quite the contrary).
Realistically speaking, the Ancestors are so old that their family tree is probably forgotten by many for the most part.
Also, nowhere in the series was said that the Ancestors themselves were blood sisters either.
And I need someone to explain to me how, if the Trix are blood sisters, they can descend from their matching Ancestral Witch and not the other two. That is not how family trees work, folks.
Icy being a princess doesn't mean she can't be a witch either, as some suggest, because we see clearly with Faragonda, Mirta and Selina that you CHOOSE whether you are a fairy or a witch. Her decision of becoming a witch may be counterintuitive, but that's on the writing and I already said I have bones to pick with the writing itself.
3) I understand that the Trix constantly coming back can be boring given their underwhelming performances in s5-7 compared to the first 3 seasons, but despite everything they're the most recognizable villains, as said by @/UnicornOfWar.
4) As I said, the story IS out of the blue. But it's pointless to complain about how late in the series it came, because it's a retcon that was clearly, obviously planned when it was too late to insert hints in the previous seasons. Bad writing? Yes. Are we used to it? Also yes.
Besides, it all began with the Trix and if any season is really going to be the last, it's fair that it is one that wraps up their story as well.
I am sure that if Tecna or Flora got a backstory, a proper one, that late, people would complain about that too.

Icy's backstory from s8 is garbage
Icy’s backstory as shown in season 8 is ridiculous and doesn’t make any sense for the real Icy that we saw from season 1 up to 3.
Firstly, was she a witch or a fairy? Remember that in season 1, when the Trix broke into Alfea to look for the Dragon’s Flame, they mentioned that fairies are the ones who are royalties. In other words, if Icy was a witch, there’s no way she was ever royalty. Yet, in season 8, her backstory claims that she was a princess of a realm called Dyamond. If we are to accept and believe that, it would imply that she was a fairy who became a witch later on. Now listen, I know that the interconversion between fairies and witches exists in the Winx universe (even though it’s silly). But in this case, it’s not possible to assume that Icy was a royal fairy with a fairy family and became a witch when she swore to free her family from the “powerful witch’s spell.” Why? Well, I’ll tell you why.
In the earlier seasons it was mentioned that Icy, Darcy and Stormy were the direct descendants of the three ancestral witches. In other words, Icy was definitely a witch. Always has been. So, it contradicts her backstory of being a princess. Also, this is exactly why those three witches call each other ‘sisters’. They are related. Yet, in s8, Icy acts like she isn’t related to Darcy and Stormy at all but to some Sapphire who just materialized out of nowhere. Just weird.
Tumblr media
Now, in her backstory she was portrayed as a poor, wronged girl who wanted to avenge a family. Okay? Now kindly recollect the Icy up to season 3 or even up to season 7. Avenger? What a joke! A dominant, power-thirsty, cold-hearted, purely evil witch! Before anyone says – “She wanted power to free her family!” – listen up first! Think about how she showed no sympathy or understanding for Bloom and Domino even though the situation is basically the same for them in the first 3 seasons. Isn’t that weird?? Also, Icy was not only hungry for power but world domination – something clearly not needed if saving her family was her goal. She and her sisters tried to take over the Magic Universe several times. Also remember again that she is the descendent of Belladonna, one of the 3 Ancestral Witches – beings of pure evil. She definitely could not have been the cinnamon roll she was shown to be in her s8 backstory.
Tumblr media
Another thing. Hair colour. Lol, wth!? Icy always had white hair. In s3, the black willow episode showed how the Trix looked like when they were young. Icy had white hair and looked very different from the blonde-haired princess we saw in her backstory in s8. In fact, changing her hair colour from blonde to white is meaningless and … like, why would anyone want to do that? She’s supposed to be some panic-stricken princess in her backstory… not some fashion-crazy girl. Nothing makes sense. Absolutely nothing!
Tumblr media
Last but not the least, the Trix were arguably the most powerful witches after their ancestors in the series. So, who is this mysterious witch seemingly stronger than Icy, who destroyed Dyamond or whatever? This is stupid as hell.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my rants. Byeee!!

Winx Club unpopular opinions
Season 6 is my comfort season, I love it as it introduced me to Winx Club :)
Obscurum is a good character in my opinion, I relate to him a lot and I wish he had a better design and was in more episodes.
I dislike the season 1 outfits, especially Bloom and Tecna’s.
I love Cosmix, it’s so gorgeous and I love space and stars. (also my name is literally Cosmo)
Darkar is better than Valtor, Darkar gave me nightmares lol.
The season 1 opening is better than the season 2 one.

I don’t even count season 8 as the same show, but the very concept that Stormy and Tecna are both insanely good at dancing is so funny to me

(Quote from the Winx Club Wiki, Season 8)
Eh, no... Nowadays, the 10-year-olds that don't watch cartoons won't watch cartoons, even if you change the art style (or make content more childish). What you should rather have been aiming for is to keep the people that are teenagers or adults, that were watching the show when they were younger. Now, there won't be many children to watch Winx Club nor the peeps that are older but still got nostalgic feelings about the show (and therefore, were interested enough to keep following the later seasons)... Wrong move, wrong move 😵‍💫
+ we loved the old artstyle when we were kids... Children now could be loving it, too, they are just not into cartoons... A different artstyle won't change that!!! 😪😪😪

I drew Tecna in her season 8 outfit, but tried to make it more so resemble seasons 1-6 art style. I did trace in the eyes because I spent about an hour trying to get them Right before giving up. I also used a reference image for the pose.
