Pedal-steel and electric guitars wrap around the rhythm section - and each other - in the way Eilen Jewel wants to wrap herself around the unnamed addressee in “Winnemucca.” 

Jewell casts herself as an underpowered radio broadcaster needing a boost as she slyly sings: 

I’m a lonely station in the desert tonight/splice my wires I wanna get electrified/plug me in to your neon signs/I wanna blast my love, let it amplify

The delicious third single from Get Behind the Wheel  (May 5) finds Jewell uncovering a sublime admixture of lyrics and music (and country and rock) to create one a songs that diverse audiences can delight in even if they agree on nothing else.

Humboldt River BLM, Nevada

Starting among a line of aspen along a stream, this hike is mostly high on the ridges and tags the range high point for long views: more aspen lines and desert. My original plan had not been to tag that high point, but I decided I had just enough water to safely do it. Onward and upward!
