Sharp class dragons as pokemon types
Dragon will only be used when needed. Go find the previous post yourself. You'll only miss the Stoker and Boulder class. I forgor to say this before but the list will be from alphabetical order from the wiki.
Devilish Dervish: dark/flying or pure flying or dark for the name and unruly nature. It's not metallic, so no steel.
Egg Biter: Dragon/flying or pure dragon for lack of other traits besides strong jaws.
Grim Gnasher: dark/flying or pure dark for vulture like behaviors for attacking the weak and old. The teeth shooting and slitherwing venom immunity can give it a move or ability.
Hackatoo: steel/flying or rock/flying for ax like snout. It isn't described to be hard like metal, so the strength of a Hackatoo is variable.
Raincutter: water/flying or water/ground rain resistant fireballs, water loving behavior and foraging in the mud.
Razorwhip: Steel/flying obviously.
Scuttleclaw: probably some sort of mix of dragon, flying, and fairy. It is constantly described as cute and playful pranksters when young, so STAB play rough could work.
Shivertooth: Ice/flying, ice/steel, or pure ice or cold environment and slicing scales.
Speed stinger: electric/poison, ground/poison, or pure poison for paralyzing venom, lack of flight, and high speed.
Stromcutter: dragon/flying or pure flying for the four wings and swiftness.
Thornridge: fighting/flying for being described as a protector for those in need.
Timberjack: flying/steel or pure flying for the massive wings and their cutting edge.
Windstriker: fire/flying for be described as us using super heated air instead of fire.

Consider: a Windstriker (there's this one in rise of berk called the retired windstriker which amuses me immensely for no reason)
I've considered and I gotta say, I don't know what I was expecting when I looked this guy up but THIS was definitely not it. It's so metal looking!!! I had to use the pose from the official render too, it's just so cool

@alyafae said: “ you don’t have to deal with this alone. ”
elizabeth raises her head from the couch when she hears the words, the lovely intruder finally having spoken after what seemed to be a long moment of taking in the pitiful state elizabeth was in. tally is definitely brave to be here after everything, and in what seemed to be on her own. but then again, they all must've guessed she wouldn't have any strength in her to harm the other woman after the mess she's made in the skies the night before... and they would be right. elizabeth had been alone since what happened to her mother, well hidden and succeeded for a while. she despises the attention, hates herself for letting it happen when she was right THERE. yesterday she had finally lost it for good, having yet to get up from the floor where she had cried until just about now, which wasn't any news, but this time she couldn't control her powers. the frustration, the grief, the guilt, it all made the skies cry together with the witch. she did, however, think it would take them a little longer to try and come here. she crawls to the coffee table, grabbing the bottle of whiskey, not attempting to hide the tears clouding her vision anymore. ❝ i'm not alone because i have to. it's because i chose to, craven. and i would love if it stayed that way. ❞ voice is hoarse from all the screaming and crying, free hand harshly rubbing her forehead as if it would magically make the headache go away.

Ultra crinfe and pretty rushed considering I wanted this done asap for roleplay. Long dead parents of Andesine and Feldspar.
The dull pink one in the armor is Windstriker, once the queen's champion until she was struck down by the SandWing general. The beige dragon is Topaz, a librarian who died in a skirmish after the following day.

i have this headcanon that yue qingyuan has two kinds of laughter; one is his usual laugh, his older-brother-shixiong-sect-leader’s laugh, that he shares with everyone, and it’s soft and kind and it matches his serene smile, with a slow cadence and a soothing effect, and sometimes it feels a little condescending, sometimes it has an exasperated huff at the end or there’s a sad note of resignation to it, and though there are exceptional times when it comes forced with a pitiful -or dangerous- edge, it’s never artificial, like a breeze in the mountain, pleasant but slight, it puts people at ease and makes him more approachable.
the other one is his xiao jiu laugh, one that only xiao jiu can elicit, and it’s explosive, kinda short and loud, more fitting for a boy than for a respected authority figure, and most inappropiate as it’s usually provoked by NOT very kind remarks and sarcastic jibes, directed at himself more often than not. and there’s always this little moment of extreme stillness before it explodes -as if always caught off guard. he really has no control over it. like a windstrike, it bursts from his core and shakes him whole. it never happens now.

Alright, sorry for doubting you, Kuku! Let's give em' the good ol Mayan One Punch!
With a cheer and a speed like an incoming missile, KUKULKAN dashed forth, swinging her fist forward.
"Okay, here I go!"
It made contact, with a heavy thud and a resonating clang, causing a shockwave to explode outward from the place of contact. However...
The fist itself was blocked by the flat of LUNE's blade, stopping it in it's tracks. However, the most notable part was the way that the mana seemed to completely disperse from KUKULKAN's fist as soon as it got close, being completely gone when it struck. The brief flicker of a magic circle could be seen surrounding LUNE, as they tilted their head back with a smile.
"Oh, woooow. What was that thing you said about your mana being too high?"
[ You triggered LUNE's high-ranking 'Magic Resistance', reducing your 4 damage to 0! Servants have differing Magic Resistance at differing ranks, reducing the amount of damage that mana-based skills to do them! However, with KUKULKAN's EX-Rank Mana, all types of Magic Resistance can be temporarily shattered as a bonus effect with a 'Spectacular Success'! You'll encounter Servants with a large number of skills that can either boost their performance or hinder yours, Magic Resistance being one of the most common. Learning your enemies skills as you fight can control the tide of battle! ]
It seems like they were goading you into using your mana...
They slashed back with their sword, forcing KUKULKAN back.
"En garde! Oh, was I supposed to say that before we started fighting? Oops!"
[ KUKULKAN took 3 damage! KUKULKAN has 4 health remaining! ]
HISTORIA smiled proudly at the display.
"Lune is physically the weakest of all of us 'Sabers', but they counteract that with having a wide variety of special abilities. So, regarding trick skills and magical items, they're actually one of the most dangerous. Hence why I banned True Name releases. If they had done that, then K would have to give up using her mana completely."
The DOCTOR raised an eyebrow.
"…You called that rule for the sake of 'K', not your friend?"
Shrugging slightly, HISTORIA chuckled.
"I don't know how powerful 'K' is, but with the amount of pure magical weaponry that Lune is stocked with, I'd rather keep our first duel cordial. But Lune's talk of the 'King's Pressure' isn't just nonsense, but the application of His Majesty's special skill, 'Ceremonial Reformation', boosting the efficacy of all those who pledge fealty to him. Eccentricities aside, Lune's fighting as a holy paladin should, with a number of dangerous tools under their belt."
HISTORIA: "So it also sends a message- that Saber is, and will always be, the most powerful class. After all, if the weakest of us can compete as a true threat, then His Majesty's strength is to be respected."
"Yep! I'm your shining, holy bunny knight, Saber Lune! In the name of the moon and His Majesty, I'll rough you up real good! Ehehehe!"
KUKULKAN raised her fists again with a smile, ready to step in for another blow.
"Ehehe… is that so…?"
[ KUKULKAN's 'Golden Sea of Trees Travelogue' skill allows her to develop as she fights, 'learning through contact' and causing a new effect each 'round' of battle! This round, the damage done by her 'STR' moves is increased by 1! ]

HTTYD TWST AU - TREY
Trey Clover, a viking who hails from a humble background and family of bakers. He’s never been fond of dragon killing, but is able to fight to protect those he cares about. Trey’s practically dragon-nip to any hungry creatures in the area.
(a repost bc this idiot forgot to tag)
okay so. i know i was supposed to be working on a bigger thing but i got a bit… side tracked (also its taking forever hdnfksk) my friend recently watched httyd 2 which inspired me to then watch rtte again which is what I was doing while drawing and I had the impulsive urge to draw a dragon but make it twst and so i did!
I’m not sure whether i’ll do more of this or expand on the lore bc rn its just a fun drawing exercise/brainrot thing but I do want to draw more for it so hopefully u’ll see more of that soon!
Here are a few afterthoughts abt this au if ur curious :
Trey nor Azul will have glasses in this AU (probably) unless I change the time period a bit since glasses aren’t a thing in HTTYD so Trey is mostly blind. I thought abt making him an archer (hence his style of glove and armor that idrk is accurate or note) but due to his… ahem nearsightedness, that idea will probably have to be scrapped since bitch can’t see. So he’s mostly just.. cooking food for the ppl and dragons or helping hold down the base.
The things he can cook are somewhat limited (bc again time period) but thanks to Kalim and the Al-Asim’s trading business being funders of the Raven Outpost, Trey gets to experience making new recipes for the first time!
I don’t think Trey’s final dragon partner will be a terrible terror but. small dragon. I wasn’t in the mood to draw something big lol. But… if i had to pick one.. hmm… I think Trey would have.. maybe like a windstriker? I’m not too certain on that but I think it’d work. If I ever expand on this i’ll think more in depth abt specific dragons for them all
but the island’s terrible terrors absolutely love him lol they feed off his cooking scraps
One of his other main jobs on the edge though, aside from cooking and baking, is gardening! That’s moreso for habit though, since their watering system is quick thanks to the help of some various dragons on the island. Aside from those like Jade and Rook, Trey’s one of the most trustworthy on the scale of “He picked up this random leaf and told you it was okay to eat.”

Traversing Tel'anor: Heroes of Old Kalimdor
Tel'anor, the gravesite of old Kaldorei heroes, still stands as a beacon of ancestral reverence. Many plaques here are illegible, but some have withstood the sands of time and grant us an insight to those who played important roles in the War of the Ancients, or had a lasting impact on Kaldorei culture.
General Startalon:
Thaedris Feathersong tells us that Startalon was commander of the Suramar hippogryph riders during the War of the Ancients, and that Thaedris meditates near his grave for guidance. Startalon's existence implies that companionship with hippogryphs is a long-standing practice in Kaldorei culture, and these aerial units were likely extremely useful in the battle against the demons - especially when facing felbats and the like.
While Startalon possessed a legendary affinity for commanding, the actual seeds of trust sown between Kaldorei and hippogryph are likely owed to Dorendil Wildcaller below.
Dorendil Wildcaller:
His plaque reads: "Nature and society called to him alike, and he was one of the first to speak with the hippogryphs. His legacy lives on in our eternal kinship with them."
The quest [Forces of Nature] speaks of a legend that "they were created by Cenarius himself as a gift for the night elves. They're wary of other races, but they're intelligent enough to recognize a friend of a friend."
Perhaps Dorendil was an ancient Druid or hunter who proved himself a worthy ally of Cenarius and the forests, and gained the trust of these mystical creatures.
Likely not intended, but if we convert his name to Darnassian "Dor" + "endil" it would mean something similar to "wild-killed/killer." This could also be a mixture between "Doren" + "diel" or "wild journey." His name could simply be "Doren" meaning "wild/feral" + a simple Kaldorei suffix like "dil."
Lilyiana Meadowblade:
Her plaque reads: "Her blade was second to none, and flowed through her foes like a blade of grass dances in the wind."
She is situated across from Dorendil Wildcaller's memorial; though whether they are related in some way is unknown.
A legendary warrior, it could be that her surname was given to her in representation of her skills with a blade, rather than one passed down from family. She could have been an armswoman of legend whose blade was compared to a blade of grass poetically, or she could have possessed some mixture between melee prowess and druidic affinity if we see these words in a more literal sense.
Aelynn and Banlorus Truecaller:
Their joint-plaque reads: "Brave Aelynn and noble Banlorus ruled the battlefields and courts alike. They fell as they lived, protecting our people from threats on all sides."
The wording of this plaque leads me to believe that Aelynn was likely a renowned warrior, and Banlorus was perhaps a magus, noble, or other person of high status who held some political sway in the Kaldorei Empire. Their involvement in "the courts" could be more social, Highborne courts of old, or possibly areas of law and justice.
Ultimately, the War of the Ancients claimed both of their lives.
The Windstriker Family:
Their plaque reads: "Marksmen without peer, their skill with a bow was an inspiration to generations of archers. Their family developed the gauntlets the Sentinels wear, carefully articulated mail links that empower our archers to this day."
I'm unsure what these gauntlets really are, as I haven't seen mention of them in regards to the modern-day Sentinel army. Maybe these were protective arm-guards with bracers and finger-tabs that allowed for comfortable and precise shots, or maybe they were more ornamental considering that military status before the Sundering was a mere title often linked to nobility. Another possibility is that some long-forgotten archery enchantment of the Highborne was intrinsically tied to the Windstriker gauntlets, and is now lost to the ages.
They could have been a staple in Pre-Sundering Sentinel regalia, but the method of craftsmanship/spellwork either did not survive the war or was abandoned when the order was revived by Tyrande Whisperwind.
Arnaera:
Perhaps the most peculiar of them all, Arnaera's plaque reads: "In service to a mythical cause, they were a shining gem to our people, giving aid where they could in assisting the populace. Alas, the hammer fell and Arnaera made a journey west. They were reborn in winter's heart, and their grand design continues."
This entry is extremely vague, and this grave lies on the outskirts of Tel'anor, down a hillside. This could be a reference to the Hammer of Khaz'goroth, or it could be a metaphor for something else entirely. The rebirth in winter's heart could be the ancient Highborne settlement of Shandaral, Winterspring, Northrend, or their soul going to Ardenweald.
What do you make of Arnaera's story?
Latara Feathersong:
Latara's plaque reads: "A huntress of the Sentinels, she led the vanguard in many campaigns. Her bravery and compassion were endless."
She is the wife of Thaedris Feathersong, a Nightfallen we meet in Tel'anor who, after 10,000 years of isolation, seeks to free her spirit and reunite with her in the afterlife.
During the quest [The Final Ingredient] we retrieve her bow, which "glows with a faint white light" and "has potent magic in it" according to Thaedris. This could be a lingering blessing from Elune, materializing in a silvery bowstring.
After we kill the harpy matriarch terrorizing the graveyard, Thaedris says, "It is done. Latara, my love. I will continue to fight for you. For us."
Upon completing the questline proper he is given renewed hope, "I thank you for giving me newfound purpose. I will meet you at Shal'Aran. I think I will be needing a source of magic, after all."

Miracle Number 13 aka Shackled Miracle
*according to old facebook lore (maybe outdated)
first appeared in 2025
When it appeared Meredith
Noted that all the other Miracles (Ritual/Sonic/Cube/Infinite/Ripple Dimension/Desolate Lands) resonated with it’s appearance sending out divine waves describing it as them “celebrating the birth of a new companion” (very alien scifi kinda sweet but mostly terrifying).
When Shackled Miracle was “born“ (came out of the ground) it formed ruins around the area with language no one at The Union recognizes and it instantly destroyed everything around it
It send out divine waves again which cause the other Miracles to resonate again and send out even more divine waves and miramons
The Miramons around Shackled Miracle are noted as being stronger bigger and stay close to Shackled with some sense of understanding their goal is to protect the miracle (Miramon are like robot bees if I had to describe it)
After this Shackled’s Miramon destoryed Hazelit city as it was too close to the Miracle (Q’s and other characters old home) and is the second greatest loss to humanity (aka ALOT of people died) since Estero Harbor
While Shackled Miracle was noted as being the Miracle that pumps out the most miramon it also has the after effect of causing more people to resonate with divine waves and meaning it also makes more espers that can fight it off (if the Miracles have intelligence Shackled is only like 2 or 3 years old so cut the evil rock some slack it’s baby)
Going by in game now
Shackled is the miracle from storymode
This is the Miracle where The Shadow Decree and Anesidora
figured out (through some experimenting on people I assume) that you can turn a human
into a sentinel of a miracle instead of into an esper
...Somehow for some reason (like all I can figure out is that having a sentinel is better than having espers but I don’t know where the shadow decree are trying to go with this plan)
Also The Shadow Decree seem to be way more experience with the location. While they aren’t 100% safe in there (in various bounties they do still get attack in the Shackled Miracle) but in comparison The Union The Shadow Decree know of routes in the Miracle where they don’t get attack as much and even places where they can ambush and attack others
Static Shock
So now we’re going to the next event
according to the new trailer the Nexus aka center piece of the Miracles is mutating
Why is that a big deal?
Well you know how the Sentinels (Kronos/Apep/Fafnir/Shimmer/Infernis/Flowrunner/Windstriker/Phobetor/The Shadows) only attack you in the Miracle
Well that’s because their main function is to protect the nexus of the miracle
in fact it’s the sentinels only function and gain all their energy from the nexus directly
if by some way you are able to take a sentinel out of the miracle away from the nexus it just turns to dust
SOoooOOOoo JUST GOING OFF ON A GUESS~
(we can confirm or deny it next week)
If the Shackled Miracle’s Nexus keeps mutating then eventually it will advance to a point where it along with the Sentinels are able to roaming outside the Miracles
and as we have seen from the Storymode and lore the Miracles are able to share with each because Shackled Miracle was able to summon Kronos as a boss which normally only appears in Ritual Miracle. So it is not that unbelievable that if the Shackled Miracles Nexus is allowed to mutate into a more dangerous form that it would be able to share that information with the other Miracles and thus allowing all the other 12+ miracles to unleash even more hell on earth
basically imagine if everywhere you went you had to fight Phobetor or Fafnir or whichever boss gives you a hard time. Like you now have to fight for your life just to go to the convience store on the corner because Apep spotted you...everyday. Forever. That is your life if the Shackled Miracle’s Nexus is allowed to mutate freely
So that’s why it’s all a big deal
anyways I think I’m done for the moment
again not interested in writing for the wiki
just dumping out my dislyte brainrot into the hashtags here is fine
okay bye

Read before you send a request!
2024/01/01
Hello! :D
2024 is the year of the dragon! I figured there couldn't possibly be a better year for me to try this, so I'm throwing my hat in the ring and starting a HTTYD themed one-drawing-a-day art blog, heavily inspired by @onewolfaday and @onedragonperday.
I will be drawing one HTTYD species every day, and requests will be periodically open in case you want me to draw a specific species for you :)
With that being said...
Requests are currently CLOSED!
Commissions are open!
I hope my fellow HTTYD fans will appreciate this blog, and I hope you'll stick around <3
Addendum: There is a gap in the numbers between Dragon #52/53 (Toothless vs The Alpha) and Dragon #59 (Sea Shockers). I took a short break from posting dragon art due to some irl events, so the numbers between 53 and 59 are missing to reflect that :)
Addendum 2: It's possible I won't be posting any dragon art on fridays to give myself a break and prevent myself from burning out. I make up for this by posting 2 dragons on the following saturday <3 There are exceptions sometimes, but it's normal for me to skip fridays.
More info under the cut!
🤎 Dragons I will be drawing:
Dragons from all three of the movies
Canon dragons (Toothless, Stormfly, Cloudjumper etc)
Dragons from the spinoff shows (Riders/Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge)
Dragons from the HTTYD games (Rise of Berk, School of Dragons and Titan Uprising, hybrids and crossbreeds included!!)
Dragons requested by followers
🤎 Dragons I will not be drawing:
Dragons from The Nine Realms (this is a personal preference, no offence meant to fans of the show)
Dragons from the books (I want to focus on the movie franchise)
Fanmade species
🤎 Dragons you've requested:
If you sent an ask requesting a dragon: I won't be answering until I can post the drawing along with it. I keep the asks in the inbox so I won't forget about them.
If you sent me a DM: Hi, thank you for being here and reaching out! :) Rest assured I will be tagging you once I post your dragon.
I love you and I appreciate you being here. Thank you for following my silly dragon project 🤎
[HTTYD OC blog: @wardenofdragons]
🤎Dragons I've already done🤎
You can search for them on the blog by searching "httyd [dragon species]" or "rob [dragon name]" for the Rise of Berk ones.
You can also search dragons based on their serial number. Ex. "dragon 006", "dragon 021", etc.
Dragons in order of posting:
Death Gripper | Stormcutter | Deadly Nadder | Gronckle | Monstrous Nightmare | Zippleback | Snaptrapper | Hobblegrunt | Silver Phantom | Scauldron | Reignstorm (Rise of Berk) | Woolly Howl | Auroma (Rise of Berk) | Thunderdrum | Death Song | Flightmare | Night Fury | Skrill | Dart (Nightlight) | Dramillion | Typhoomerang | Terrible Terror | Razorwhip | Screaming Death | Light Fury | Changewing | Sandbuster | Sand Wraith | Speed Stinger | Boneknapper | Timberjack | Nightlight | Singetail (Freezeburn from Rise of Berk) | Sentinel |Prickleboggle | Sliquifer | Skyfire (Rise of Berk) | Shivertooth | Tuffnut's Chicken | Groncicle | Scuttleclaw | Shockjaw | Brute Stormcutter (Rise of Berk) | Egg Biter | Slitherwing | Triple Stryke | Red Death | Eruptodon | Tide Glider | Skrill × Stormcutter Hybrid (my design) | Zipplewraith (Titan Uprising) | Drago's Bewilderbeast | Toothless :) | Sea Shocker | Windstriker | Catastrophic Quaken | Rumblehorn | Titan Woolly Howl | Baby Typhoomerang | Baby Bewilderbeast | Rosethorn (Rise of Berk) | Hobgobbler | Bone Gripper (Bonknapper × Death Gripper Hybrid) | Viggo's Skrill (and Viggo) | Smothering Smokebreath | Deathly Galeslash (Titan Uprising) | Raincutter | Grim Gnasher | Snow Wraith | Snafflefang | Ruffnut's Trancemare (Rise of Berk) | Night Fury OC (Warden) | Fireworm | Fireworm Queen | Scimiterror (Rise of Berk) | Wise Wind (Rise of Berk) | Flame Whipper | Sand Wraith × Night Fury Hybrid (my design) | Monstrous Nightmare × Deadly Nadder Hybrid (my design)

Alder: The Spree trucks incident
Some thoughts about Motherland: Fort Salem. Full spoilers for seasons 1 to the end of 3, you are warned. This is specifically about s1e08 Citydrop. (Sorry this is very long)
The situation is this: 2 Spree trucks, presumably full of mines, are on their way to the Boston airport and they have to be stopped to avoid mass civilian casualties. A strike team is en route but will be too late to stop the mines from either sent into planes all over the country or being used in the airport. Only the instructors and cadets currently in operation in Citydrop are close enough to stop the trucks.
Those are the mission parameters. They’re pretty clear: stop the trucks or let thousands of civilians die.
A reminder that Scylla killed approximately 1600 civilians with one balloon, though it was at a big event with a huge crowd. From the very limited angle of Tally’s Sight, we are shown at least 12 inflatable pool toys, 3 huge metal canisters and 2 smaller thermos-like canisters. There are also barrels and packed pallets that may or may not contain more bottles and inflatables. The death toll could be catastrophic.
Also, the Spree destroyed the car factory themselves minutes after leaving with the trucks. Only the 6th floor was the Spree armory, all the rest of the building was a legitimate workplace with civilian employees inside and the Spree didn’t hesitate to kill them as collateral. The televised report from Alder announces over a hundred of casualties at the factory.
The cadets and their instructors place themselves in the path of the Spree trucks and wait for them to arrive. The army has legal authority and is simply blocking the road. Any amount of stalling here would be to their advantage as there is a strike team on the way. They are not being aggressive.
The 1st Spree truck doesn’t stop and tries to run the cadets over. The cadets defend themselves by windstriking the truck off the road. The Spree are the aggressor.
The 2nd Spree truck stops in the middle of the road to reassess for a minute. They then start driving again and try to run the cadets over like the 1st truck did.
Through Tally’s Sight, the army knows that the Spree have now armed the mines. The Spree’s intention is that the cadets’ windstrike would trigger the mines and kill them all, hostages included. The Spree in the 2nd truck chose the murder-suicide route.
It’s only because of Little Miss Scryer Extraordinaire’s great skill in Sight that the cadets know what the 2nd truck is really trying to do. Thanks to that, Anacostia and the cadets change tactics and windshear the truck to oblivion instead of using winstrike again, avoiding a total bloodbath.
Therefore, in her televised address, Alder told the exact truth: “After our forces intercepted them, the Spree reacted as they always do, with violence and destruction. They chose to execute the hostages […].”
A suicide by cop is still a suicide. A murder-suicide by cop is still a murder-suicide.
Another reminder: the Spree are shown to be somewhat impervious to their own push work (as seen in M:FS s2e08, when Scylla resists at least one of Nicte’s push attack). Meaning that would the Spree survive the windstrike and subsequent crash of the 2nd truck (the Spree in the 1st truck survived the crash) could be getting away alive. So it wasn’t even a murder-suicide by cop, only a murder by cop.
In this instance, Anacostia is the one who lies. When Tally tells her about the hostages, she relays the message to Alder and Alder says: “The mission hasn’t changed. Proceed.” For Alder (and anyone who can count), the maths still works: 7 dead hostages are still better than thousands of dead civilians. There is no other solution. Neither Anacostia nor Tally proposes an alternative. No officer present in the war room proposes any alternative, they all know there isn’t one.
But Tally doesn’t take it well, and Anacostia then lies to her to pacify her:
Tally: “There are innocent people inside!”
Anacostia: “No. The Spree are just making you see things. My intel says there are no civilians onboard.”
That’s the only lie uttered in this whole mission. Alder didn’t lie, and didn’t order Anacostia to lie.
After this lie is the misunderstanding that will lead Tally to be so incensed against Alder:
Anacostia: “Craven. My intel, my orders, come directly from General Alder herself. Do you understand?”
Anacostia is simply trying to impress upon Tally that they don’t have the power to make a decision here, only their Commanding Officer does. But saying this right after her lie makes it sound to Tally that Alder said that there were no civilians onboard.
Now Tally mistakenly thinks that Alder lied when the lie was Anacostia’s.
Later, Tally says to her unit: “I told Anacostia. […] She said that intel came straight from General Alder and that there were no hostages.”
Now all 3 believe that Alder lied to them.
This misunderstanding will most probably never be addressed even though it’s what turns the unit against Alder in the first place, sending them to Petra, sending Petra to Wade, forcing Alder to puppet Wade and precipitating her later demise.
The cadets have sworn the oath to defend civilians with their lives, like every other soldier in the army. It was their duty, like every other soldier in the army, to stop those trucks. It’s only because they’re still in training that they are seen as “children sent to war” in the public eye.
Using the cadets is bad for optics, for the army’s and the government’s reputation. It’s a political and public representation problem, but that’s all it is. It’s the only reason that President Wade takes umbrage of this, for the same reason she always does: her reputation is taking a hit. Her reputation is the only thing she ever evokes as reason for her decisions.
It is unarguable that:
it would have been worse on every level to let the trucks reach the airport unhindered;
the Spree made the decision to execute the hostages;
Alder told the truth about it;
it was the correct decision to let the hostages be sacrificed.
The cadets, and Tally in particular, are traumatized, which is only logical. It would have traumatized more experienced soldiers. It even traumatizes Anacostia, who blames Alder as a way to cope with it.
The Spree did this to them. The Spree’s violence put them in an untenable position. The Spree forced them to kill innocent civilians. The Spree rammed their trucks into them and killed Libba.
The Spree are terrorists, they use terror as a weapon. They might have failed to use it against thousands of civilians, but they still managed to use it against the cadets and public opinion.
Additional considerations:
Why did the Spree even take hostages? Hostages are meant to serve as a shield, to influence your opponent’s actions, but it can’t if they don’t know you have hostages. The Spree didn’t announce that they had hostages, and only Tally Saw them. Anacostia specifically asked Tally to scry on the truck because she knows Tally’s Sight is that exceptional. The Spree wouldn’t have counted on the army’s scrying being that good. It might be a problem in the writing of the scene, but we could also assume that it was done this way to again demonstrate Tally’s great Sight, and to amp up the drama of Tally being the only one to know about the hostages and to think Alder lied. Or it could be that the hostages were always intended to be used as sacrifices in case the trucks were stopped, making it look bad for the authorities that hostages died (which is exactly what happened).
Knowing that hostages were onboard the 2nd truck, Tally refused to participate in the collective windshear to destroy it. There’s a distinct possibility that adding her power to the collective windshear would have finished destroying the small debris that injured some cadets and killed Libba. Adding the fact that it’s been demonstrated that the Bellweather unit’s harmonics are way more than the sum of their individual’s, there’s a really high chance her participation would have saved Libba. She refused to help the Spree kill civilians, and in doing that, also refused to help her sisters who were under threat of death. Nobody ever mentions it but it is very much part of showing how Tally’s immaturity is dangerous to the people around her.
Anacostia states that the instructors present in Citydrop are specifically trained in using Spree works (and thus are better suited than most at resisting Spree works, as demonstrated later by Scylla in M:FS s2e08). Had the mines been triggered near them and the cadets, they would have had a chance to resist them and hopefully help the cadets survive too. Not that there was any alternative, but Alder might have counted on that fact when she gave the order.
Anacostia also states that any cadet failing the Citydrop exam would be put on the list for early deployment instead of being sent to War College. Meaning that, even if Wade makes a great case about Alder sending untested cadets to war, those cadets were potentially hours away for being deployed anyway (although, they would have been deployed only after graduation day, which is still a few days away). Wade’s uproar really is just about semantics and appearances.
It’s possible that the army could have warned the civilian authorities of the arrival of the trucks, and maybe they did (it wasn’t on the list of possibilities voiced in the war room during the incident). Assuming there was even time for them to do something about it, the civilian police could have blocked the road, and the airport authorities could have evacuated the airport and grounded all the planes. This would have reduced the number of casualties, but, as the Spree demonstrated, they would have simply activated the mines and rammed into roadblocks to reach whatever amount of civilians they could. The deployed police forces and any civilian bystanders would still certainly have died en masse for it. Having the cadets intercept the trucks was still, by far, the better solution.
