WADDINGTON'S INVITATION TO FREED SLAVE, ISAAC JOHNSON, TO BUILD THE OLD TOWN HALL, WAS LIKELY TO PROVE THEIR SPIRIT AND WILL HAD NOT BEEN CRUSHED BY WAR.

Instead of resorting to murder and destruction, a timeless memorial was built to remind us of the cost of freedom. Isaac Johnson, a master mason living near Morrisburg, Ontario, was invited to build Waddington's Old Town Hall.(1) Three of Isaac’s children were born in Waddington.(1) In order to pay for their schooling, Johnson published his autobiography.(2) The Old Town Hall was built facing St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

-religious home of the Monk, Ogden, and Clark Families

-and a testimony to God’s purchase of man’s freedom.

Above the doorway to the Town Hall are unusual symbols including a large star in the center bounded by two curly q’s which may represent the North Star, which guided the slaves to freedom.

As part of the Underground Railroad, Waddington residents likely assisted runaway slaves in finding freedom in Canada.(3) Their morality instilled in them a sense of justice and compassion. Instead of continuing the time-honored and deeply rooted tradition of blood revenge, they sought to educate the coming generations. By building a memorial for later generations, they have allowed us to remember their sacrifice, admire their example, and strive for the eradication of slavery through education and cooperation.
