Hard to believe it was exactly a year ago that we visited the Mediterranean. Back to the more relaxed pace of Kauai this year. If my defibrillator continues to work, I hope to create a weekly edition of my blog this year.
These islands have always intrigued me. Partly because of their seemingly random discovery 1500 years ago by some Polynesians in a canoe, and partly because of their explosive but transient existence. More on those topics on another day.
We have been to the Big Island and Maui twice each before, but our last 5 trips have been to Kauai. In my opinion it is the least spoiled (least developed) with friendly locals, awesome hiking and scenery (NaPali Coast) and today’s topic….. wildlife.
As you can see below, the trip was pleasant and without any nasty animals in our row. Worth the extra $$.
Our villa is one of 30 units…..deep within a volcanic crater about 75 yards from the ocean. This little guy and several hundred of his friends provide music for our daily happy hour.
These NeNe below seem to be part duck and part goose. Interesting markings and much more pleasant than their Cdn cousins. Found only in Hawaii.
This island is also filled with wild Roosters and Hens from the deepest jungle to every roadside. Reportedly a hurricane in the 80s or 90s released a few thousand into the wild and the rest is history. All the islands have wild chickens but more here than elsewhere.
On Poipu Beach……. Giant Green Turtles make regular appearances for naps. About 5 feet long and 400-500 pounds, the pictures do not do justice to the enormity of these beasts. Strictly protected and adored by the local community.
The beaches here are many and mostly deserted. Here Princess returns to the blog to check out the Monk Seals
These 500 pounds seals are only found in the Hawaiian chain of islands.
Most reside near Kauai and further north along the numerous Atolls and very small islands(such as Midway) stretching north from here. The chain of Atolls beyond Kauai lasts for about 1000 miles towards Japan.
Not concerned at all with people. Just belly up and basking. These 2 guys were hanging out yesterday at different points along our swimming beach stroll. Walkers like us plant stakes around them for privacy so the rare numb nuts gets the point not to harass.
And finally Princess had her birthday dinner last week.
No need for hair curlers on the island and we love the open air restaurants.
Next week…….. the creation and erosion of all these beautiful places.
P.S. We are heading to Paris for a few days in August during the Olympics then cruising the Seine to see the historic beaches in Normandy. Stay tuned for a summer of WW2 sites and stories

there are more chickens on the island of Kauaʻi than pigeons, &also probably people, &they are all feral, territorial, unafraid of humans (+cars), &extremely well loved by islanders back home (+me).

Sit on the beach in front of Kauai’s Grand Hyatt Resort at Poipu Beach and watch people flip out.
Shipwreck Beach (the wreck offshore was washed away a few winters back) is also known by surfers for its frothy shore break.
Walk the sand at the end of the beach to pick up the trail to the bluff, which continues for miles to the wild seascapes and snorkeling beaches at Mahaulepu.

Awa awapuhi trail, Kauai, July 2023
About 6 mi out and back trail through Koke'e State Park ending at the Na Pali State Park coastline. Almost died slipping in the clay and down a cliff near the end of this trail. Managed to catch myself on a root and climb back up, still had my vape in hand. Views at the end were worth it. My brother and I ate wild blackberries on the way back up once we ran out of water. One of my all time favorite hikes minus almost dying (got a bigger adrenaline rush than from skydiving)

While many people imagine nothing but endless beaches when they think of Hawaii (and there are certainly plenty of those on Kauai) the state is home to some of the most amazing hiking trails in the state.
Napali Coast hiking is popular for a reason, and although options may seem limited at first glance – no one who has spent time hiking those trails would agree with that assessment.
Kauai’s Napali Coast is an absolute must on any hiker do list visiting the islands of Hawaii.
Napali Coast Hiking - Knowing Your Incredible Scenic Options
Hiking Permit Requirements
The popular but challenging Hanakapi’ai day hike can be done without a permit. This is four miles round trip and is actually a very challenging hike so come prepared.
While the rest of the Kalalau Trail requires a permit for multi-day hiking and camping at the designated points where camping is allowed, Hanakapi’ai is open for the day. Anyone planning a longer hike will need a permit from the local DNR.
The Kalalau Trail
This is the name for the larger trail that is a 22-mile roundtrip hike, not including several extra sections that include little two mile off-shoots to scenic areas worth checking out.
This is a trail that has everything: five distinctive lush Hawaiian valleys, wild and unpredictable streams, a disappearing beach, tiny footpaths along steep sea cliffs, isolated beaches, and beautiful tropical mountains.
These are 22 of the most scenic miles you’ll find anywhere, and there’s a reason so many fall in love with even just small sections of this trail.
If you are hiking the Napali Coast, you will want to check out the Kalalau Trail.
Hanakapi’ai Day Hike
This is the section of the Kalalau Trail that is most widely hiked, in part because you don’t need a permit to do so.
While only four miles round trip, this isn’t a trail to be taken lightly. There is a 4-mile roundtrip hike to Hanakapi’ai Beach that keeps you by the coast that defines beautiful coastal Hawaiian beaches or there is also an 8 mile round trip that goes to the waterfall.
Both trips are considered very difficult as there are large elevation changes as you hike up and down the large rising bluffs while rain equals mud – and there’s a lot of rain in this tropical area. However, the sights are beautiful.
Bring plenty of water as even the beach hike can take 2 hours each way at a leisurely pace and the waterfall hike – even longer. Add in even more trails, but also stunning ocean views from heights and impressive but sometimes gnarly trails hugging the side of the mountains.
In Conclusion
The options might seem limited, but even if you hiked the entire Kalalau Trail a hundred times, it would never seem like it.
This is Hawaii at its finest and if you want to hike the best that the Napali Coast has to offer then these are the trails that you are going to want to hit.

What’s the minimum age to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. However, based upon your situation, whenever possible, we try to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, consider contacting your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your roof top tent camper trucks and Jeeps family friendly?
Certainly! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb up a little ladder. If this is a concern, we also offer an additional tent with each package which you may set up on the ground next to your camping truck or Jeep. This can be more convenient for you and also your children.
How many people can your camping vehicles accommodate?
We can accommodate 3 individuals maximum, although in case there are more within your group, we do offer an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for up to 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Just let us know in advance if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Am I able to visit any beach for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll supply you with a list of the best places to check out and also to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to visit designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in specified locations with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, though private campsites may be a little more. One particular advantage of these campsites is that you will have complete access to facilities, including showers, restrooms and picnic dining tables. Please keep in mind that if you opt to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It’s a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you choose to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night beforehand. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. Hawaii Weighs Long-Overdue Welfare Reforms in Farm Animal Transport
Honolulu, HI—Following years of delays, on October 11 the Hawaii Board of Agriculture will finally consider regulations to protect cattle, sheep, and goats transported via sea vessel between the Hawaiian Islands.
In May, the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and nine other animal protection organizations, including five in Hawaii, submitted comments to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) advocating changes to the original draft rules. As a result, the proposed administrative rules now require that containers holding these animals be placed in areas that allow the greatest access to ventilation to limit their exposure to heat and stress. The rules also now restrict the number of animals per container and prohibit injured, ill, lame, blind, or late-stage pregnant animals from being transported.
“The proposed rules are a meaningful first step in protecting the welfare of animals during what is already an extremely stressful time,” said Adrienne Craig, staff attorney for AWI’s farm animal program. “But it’s disappointing to see that the rules do not unequivocally require animals to be loaded last and unloaded first during transport or require that animals waiting to be loaded — often for hours — are provided with shade. Moreover, the rule that animals be given food or water within a 24-hour period does not factor in the time they spend waiting to be loaded. The board needs to strengthen these rules if members truly have the animals’ best interests in mind.”
Had these rules been enacted earlier, they could have prevented the suffocation of 21 cattle on a Young Brothers barge en route from Honolulu to Kauai in December 2019. The cattle suffered a prolonged and preventable death after the carriers placed the animal containers too close together, limiting ventilation. Although the animals were inspected at the port in accordance with existing Hawaii regulations for preventing the transmission and introduction of diseases, no steps were taken to determine if the animals had adequate access to ventilation.
Following this tragedy, AWI urged the state to enact standards of care for the shipment of farm animals. In 2020, the state legislature introduced a number of bills; however, they were held in committee after the Hawaii Department of Agriculture instead committed to adopting administrative rules to address these long-needed basic welfare reforms. Currently, there are only voluntary industry standards and disease-prevention protocols related to the intrastate transport of farm animals. There are no laws or regulations to address animal care or welfare in sea vessel shipment or hold carriers accountable for failing to follow the standards.
“We urge the department to uphold its earlier commitment and for the board to adopt these most modest but critical reforms to protect farm animals from unnecessary suffering or death,” said Inga Gibson, president and policy director for Pono Advocacy in Honolulu.
