So it FINALLY happened! 

Well, two things happened in Batgirls #13. 

 #1 We got an editor's note detailing a past Batgirl's ongoing for a reader to look at (only took them thirteen issues)!!! 

 #2 The first ACTUAL confirmation that Cass's original origin is back in canon.

Now, how does this explain Cassandra Cain’s origins that are both in play?

It’s complicated.

COMPLICATED...

So I’m going to do my best to explain it all here.

So in the current DC Universe EVERYTHING is canon. How you ask? Well...

Let’s start with the DCU post-Crisis on Infinite Earths aka when Cassandra Cain was introduced into this very universe during the Batman: No Man’s Land event. 

So everything that happened to Cass from that moment all the way to Batman: Gates of Gotham basically. That bit of history up until Flashpoint when Barry Allen decided to screw up the DCU and everything and everyone. 

Instead of fixing it completely Barry was more like Homer Simpson in that Treehouse of Horror episode when he mucked with time too much and settled with what he got when “fixing” it:

 The universe reset itself. Things happened anew and Cass came back to the DCU this time being reintroduced with a completely new origin in Batman & Robin Eternal. Along with her origin being tied with Harper/Cullen Row as she was now the person who murdered their mother Miranda.

This version of Cass had 0 memories of her prior life. HOWEVER, she did learn about them in Detective Comics #980:

But note she had 0 memories of that prior life. 

UNTIL...

Dark Knights: Death Metal #6 when she along with many others got the memories of her prior history (for her it was just this missing chunk. For everyone it was SOOOOO much more) as the final battle for the DC Multiverse erupted.

Everything is one story now.

Even if everything has happened. Just that the universe is still set with Barry’s fuckup timeline. However, it’s always been assumed (at least by me) that Cass took this newfound memory and due to the talk she had with Batman in Batman & the Outsiders #17 decided to retake the mantle of Batgirl in Batman: Joker War Zone #1 during the Joker War event (that was happening around the same time as Dark Knights: Death Metal).

It's the best way to think of how everything exists when it shouldn't. That or DC doing a fierce impersonation of Cass at an all-you-can-eat buffet. The girl wants it ALL:

It is how you can have Harper/Cullen Row still existing and talking about Batman & Robin Eternal origin of Cass still (from the Punchline one-shot post Joker War in 2020):

But also have in 2021 DC referencing Cass’s NML origin in DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration #1 in the back blurb:

Along with writer Mariko Tamaki referencing No Man’s Land in her Tec run (#1050) and in the Batman One Day Day: Two-Face #1. Along with Batgirls #13 aka what kicked this whole thing off.

Yet, somehow the mainline DCU is the least complicated of explaining Cassandra’s origins. “Wait, there’s one more confusing?” you ask? Yes. There is! For there is one universe where Cassandra Cain’s origins are even more complicated. 

I give you Batman: Wayne Family Adventures who decided she had all three identities and settled on evolving into Orphan. 🙃🙃🙃🙃

I refuse to even someone explain this history and devolution. You’re not gonna make me.

I’m finally watching “Pachinko” (based on the book by Min Jin Lee, which I read earlier this year) and while I’d read criticisms about the decision to jump back and forth in the story, I’m kind of enjoying this approach. It’s nice to have the different tones with the different times of Sunja’s life and to not have to wait to see certain characters. I’m also glad that it’s not jumping to a bunch of different years, but just following two timelines simultaneously. Sometimes it’s more frustrating in stories spanning multiple generations when the tone changes so much from the beginning to the end? This way, it’s kind of like having the best of both worlds. And the parallel themes—or contrasts—comparing the two time periods can work well.

That being said, I do think going out of order greatly hinders some of the emotional moments. It works well if you’ve read the book, but if you haven’t, why would you care about what’s happening to certain characters? Or maybe it works for some people, to piece together the clues.

Long story short, I highly recommend reading “Pachinko” and I hope the TV show gets to complete its seasons!

It's very funny to me whenever people complain about continuity or changes to the "canon" in Doctor Who because there's the whole UNIT dating controversy, which is hilarious peak long-running TV series with multiple writers shenanigans, and which still has not and probably never will be definitively resolved.

Idea: Reaper Mike's younger self murder is like messing up time- Other stuff from his time just starts appearing like Some of the animatronics from his pizzeria and other equipment. Maybe even some of his family... Scrap baby or scrap trap dropping In a time before both of them turned into monsters would be interesting.... Wonder if either of them would do the same thing as the reaper....

Love this! If adult Mike could come back in time, it's 100% plausible other things and people from different points in time could also appear in young Mike's time. This could be a result of time 'wearing down,' so to speak, after countless repetitions of this same short time period. And with the strain of additional time travelers, it begins to break down even further...

The timeline breaking down results in the whole town of Hurricane becoming the setting of a large scale Ultimate Custom Night. The possessed animatronics are confused by their new surroundings, scared of the situation they now find themselves in, and react as they always do; violently. Mike takes his little siblings and tries to hide from the chaos (William's always shut up in his basement or at Fredbear's these days, and he's long realized he can't count on Henry) while the animatronics run amok. People are killed by the rampaging machines and even the police struggle to contain them. The government moves in to shut down the roads, set up blockades, and essentially seal in the entire town to prevent the animatronics from escaping until a more permanent solution can be found.

Scraptrap and Scrap Baby are initially confused and enraged like the others. But when they realize that Michael is also there, they forget all else and pursue him with single minded determination. Now, Scrap Baby is merely following Scraptrap's lead in order to make her 'father' proud. Scraptrap, on the other hand, is filled with pure, unrelenting rage at the one who destroyed his life over and again, and keeps tormenting him even in his death. He's less animalistic than the others, but no less vicious and he doesn't care whether he kills the Reaper or young Mike.

In fact, he'd relish the opportunity to make both of them suffer.
