i was just thinking that Raf is very normal for someone who was born rich and raised as a celebrity lol
he'd be happy to hear this lmfao he put a lot of work into it.
He still has certain misconceptions about what counts as "humble" when talking about material wealth and quality of living [he describes his current situation as "humble"--which...it isn't lmao. It's just not outwardly extravagant]. It took him as long as it did to realize that Margie was unhoused [despite seeing her every week for months] because he had an idea in his mind about how Homeless People looked and behaved--and Margie didn't fit into it at all.
In terms of his behaviour, though, he was definitely much harder to relate to when he first showed up in Van right after graduating Juilliard. His Uncle, therapist, and Hi-Note helped ground him--and he wanted to assimilate and fit into middle-class north american culture. But even while he was dating Lacey, he was still kinda...on a different plane of existence, so to speak lmao. I think things really started clicking into place for him after that break-up. He really leaned into being 'no one, just a guy' after that.
Raf's still got some rich boi behaviours/assumptions that will occassionallu show up casually, in passing, that reminds everyone he's a prince in pauper's clothing--all while he himself remains completely oblivious to the fact that he raised any flags at all lmao

Introducing: The Malevolent Tides
A Post-TLH Story - synopsis below!
Please note: The worldbuilding, TID, and TLH characters all belong to Cassandra Clare. I took the liberty to make up the children of the TLH characters (partially based off of the inaccurate Clockwork Princess family tree, but mostly from my own imagination). This story will contain spoilers for Chain of Thorns!
September, 1929: Coming of age during the mundane’s Great War and the Spanish Influenza, the young Shadowhunters of London are no strangers to demons and despair. In fact, compared to the hordes of demons attracted to Earth by the mundane conflicts of their youth, things have been relatively calm as the children grew from a troubled youth into a tentatively hopeful adolescence. Things are looking up… but little does this future “lost generation,” know, their light-hearted, wild youths are about to come to an abrupt end, as darkness and violence comes to claim the mundane - and shadow - worlds once again.
New York City, USA: Elizabeth Herondale has finally left her family’s home… and her drama with her brother, Owen, and his fiancée, Lydia, behind. Elizabeth is eager to forget her troubles in the vices that make New York City the center of the modern world; touted as a place where anyone can arrive a pauper and leave a millionaire, where women are free to move through the streets unaccompanied by men, and where illegal vices - booze, cards, jazz - are easier to find than avoid, Elizabeth is ready to relocate for good and reclaim her future. Accompanied by her intrepid parabatai and cousin, Margaret Blackthorn (who is more comfortable behind the lens of a camera than onstage in a flapper hall), Elizabeth has no plans to return to London any time soon. Then comes October, and the infamous crash of Wall Street that plunges the entire globe into economic recession. Elizabeth does not want to return home, but her and Margie might not have a choice in the matter…
Athens, Greece: Edmund Blackthorn was supposed to return to London and his family eight months ago… and he did, but something drew him back to Athens once more. Picking up his Uncle James’ love for the ancient classics from a young age, Edmund always knew he wanted to do his travel year in the center of it all: Athens, Greece. While he expected his year abroad to be full of research and sightseeing, he did not expect it to be entirely thrown off course by the witty, brilliant Cadia Sedgewick. Together, the two have uncovered an ancient mystery; while other Shadowhunters are urging them to focus on the rapidly-approaching and grim future, Edmund and Cadia are drawn further and further into the past. All the stories are true, after all, and this mystery might just be the key to aid the present and save the future.
Berlin, Germany: Owen Herondale didn’t plan to fall in love with Lydia Kingsmill… but Herondales love only once, as his father and grandfather told him from the time he was young, and Lydia was the only one for him. The Treaty of Versailles that ended the mundane Great War has thrust Germany into despair, and the Shadowhunters of the German institutes are feeling the side effects; indeed, as the churches and government are no longer able to tithe, many Shadowhunters have packed up and left for more lucrative cities, or returned home to Idris. Owen desperately wants Lydia to come to London with him, but Lydia doesn’t want to leave her family - and the institute she grew up in - behind.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Vienna Fairchild was determined to embark on a grand voyage like her father, and she wasn’t going to let the fact that she was a woman stop her. At the start of her travel year, Vienna ran to the last city full of glittering nightlife and wild parties in Europe - and indeed, Amsterdam is the last European stand of the ‘Roaring Twenties’ as recession grows over the continent like a shadow. Planning to pack her trunks and flee for the Americas with her best friends Lizzie and Margie, Vienna is stopped when the local institute desperately needs help. Their issue, however, is much larger than Amsterdam itself…
Alicante, Idris: The youngest of her siblings and cousins and friends, Alaina Blackthorn is thrilled to finally have her turn at Shadowhunter Academy. The Academy is, after all, a legendary place for life-changing bonds… it’s where her Uncle James and Uncle Matthew decided to become parabatai, and where her brother Theodore and Graham Fairchild first became friends - and now they, too, were parabatai. Flanked by her friends Raya Fairchild and Taron Carstairs-Lightwood, Alaina cannot wait to finally experience freedom - until the world starts to fall apart, and all their parents summon them back to London.
London, England: The adults of the London Enclave are certain the worst is behind them - they defeated Belial when they were teenagers, and the mundane world has finally calmed down after over a decade of war and pestilence. But the wicked never rest, and dark forces are gathering - and their target is London, the city that started it all.

Short Margaretha Analysis
Margie is a person who wanted a life beyond the quiet fishing village of Lakeside. She thought she found love, then was abused by that same person. She goes to the manor at the chance of being a "millionaire". She's also been through a lot.
Tumblr media
Margie does have several skins where she does some not great things. Like Kroto helping Scrooge fake Bella’s death as a fall. Or skins involving luring and manipulating people, like Aromatherapy Sauna and Mystic Flame which says “she lured lambs onto the path of no return”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moonblessed was used by Samhain in the Halloween story but saved by Fenix. And Vile Blossom worked with Netherwalker after being corrupted by the abyss.
Those like Kroto, Moonblessed, and Vile Blossom I think can connect to Margaretha’s (not good) relationship with Sergei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was the one who had her give her aunt and uncle a special borscht to knock them out and let them escape the village. He was also the one who abused her when he became drunk.
Tumblr media
He saw her like his property, so when he found out she “sought refuge” in Joker’s tent, it says “Sergei couldn’t stand for this”. This was when we know he got revenge on Joker by destroying his face with acid laced in his make-up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time passed but eventually “the truth was finally spilled in a fit of drunkenness”. As the next words are Sergei “also” lost his face” on that drunken night, the “truth” should refer to Sergei being the one to ruin Joker’s face (which angered Joker so much he killed Sergei).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to Joker’s own mental state having deteriorated over the years while playing the crying clown, from having no hope of ever being the leading role, forcing Joker to humiliate and act foolish in front of an entire audience repeatedly “for the spectator’s joy”, inspired “that innermost, dark part of his soul”. Learning Sergei was the cause of his ruined face and for making Joker unable to “continue playing the role of a sad clown” at Hullabaloo was the last straw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was when Joker then caused the Hullabaloo tragedy, burning down the circus that had caused him so much pain and let himself let lose and vent all his suffering by killing everyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for skins like Aromatherapy Sauna and Mystic Flame where she’s involved with luring or manipulating people, I think this is meant to loosely connect to essentially Margaretha’s desire for “someone to rely on, even if it’s just temporarily” as she says herself in her 4th letter.
Tumblr media
Going back to Margaretha’s 2nd and 3rd letters, it further details she “uses her beauty and frailty to seek sympathy and protection from others” (though this is said by the manor owner, who has a biased/negative view of everyone).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reason Margaretha is at risk can tie to how she keeps being in situations where she’s at risk or being hurt, like Sergei abusing her, or the hullabaloo tragedy, or the threat of Mike attacking her. It is situations like these why Margaretha seeks protection.
She wants a comfortable life, without pain, or abuse, or any threat to her life. She’s never been alone, which is why she keeps seeking someone that she can lean on.
Margaretha’s goal ever since before she left Lakeside was to pursue a “better life”. She wasn’t satisfied (at least initially) with the quiet fishing village. As Margaretha herself says in her 4th letter, even though she’s starting to miss Lakeside after all this, she “still wants to see the outside world before heading back”. That was why she went after Sergei, a way out of Lakeside and hopefully to something better. It is unfortunate it is only after too late she discovers how he really is. She escaped Lakeside via Sergei, then went to Joker after a “heated argument” to escape her abuse from Sergei. After escaping the circus during the hullabaloo tragedy, we see in her 3rd letter that “at one point she… truly missed the kinship between the ‘Hullabaloo' circus members” but “went back to her old ways” when she recognized Joker. This was because she sought protection against Mike in case he tried to attack her (due to him thinking she might’ve cause the circus tragedy).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Margie’s backstory, in relation to her desire for a “better life”, it says she was “used to the good life” but lost ‘all financial security’ when Sergei died. It then says “Margaretha, not knowing how to making[sic] a living, has gained a new understanding of ‘freedom’”.
Compared to someone like Norton, Margaretha did have a semi comfortable life with at least the basic necessities, but she wanted more. This connects to how I said earlier Margaretha wants a comfortable life without pain or difficulty.
She was also interested in seeing more of the world than what was there in that quiet fishing village, which was likely why she tried to join the traveling circus Hullabaloo. She’d never been alone before, forced to care for herself all alone, which is why her backstory mentions gaining a “new understanding of ‘freedom’”. We see she once again is faced with this reality when she realizes how Joker has changed when she sees him attack Violetta. Margaretha is confirmed to have been affected by the drugs, so we should keep that in mind. But she does now want to escape from Joker, and is afraid she might become his next target, yet as she says she now has “no one left to trust”. This means Margaretha herself this time will have to step up and protect herself, which could fit with how she says “If he really does make me his next target, I will never give him the chance, and I won't let myself be fooled again!”
(Margaretha learning to essentially be on her own without having to rely on someone else could be reflected with Kroto after she leaves Golden Rose Theater for a new theater group to perform “Kroto’s Chain”.)
Tumblr media
No Margaretha isn’t perfect, but neither is she pure evil.
Yes she’s used to luxury, but she’s also been through a lot of pain. Remember, she “fled” to Lakeside with her aunt and uncle 15 years ago, while she was still young.
Tumblr media
Her parents are never mentioned, and the use of the word “fled” can imply something bad happened to them. Then she was betrayed by her fiancé/husband Sergei who she thought would be the love of her life but ended up being a drunk who constantly abused her (who likely also frequently got angry and was possessive of her). She then had to flee the circus that she thought would be her new home as it burned to the ground and everyone within was killed. And finally, at the manor, she is afraid of Mike attacking her due to his belief she may have caused the tragedy, and then afraid of Joker himself when she sees what he did to Violetta.
Yes she does use her “beauty and frailty” to “seek sympathy and protection”, but that's her fear and desperation (to avoid any more danger). It is also due to her lack of ever having to rely on only herself before, but she is forced to confront this reality eventually.
Also, essences aren't 1 to 1. Just like how Norton has a lot of skins that emphasize "greed" with him, yet if you really look at his story, you'll see this is far from the case (desperate to escape poverty to have a comfortable life with the basic necessities).
So same to Margie, even if she seems to have a lot of skins that involve her not doing something good, just summing it up as "evil" is quite accurate.
(I wish it were as easy for me to explain Demi's skins making her look but I feel like we're missing key info about her)
(Demi is called an "insider" and her brother does work for the manor owner, but for now I'm hoping we'll learn more about her soon. That or more if Sam gets released eventually)
(If I said anything wrong about Margie, my apologies. I did this analysis fairly quickly, as I wanted to make sure to clarify my opinion/comments. Please let me know if there's any inaccuracies, because I know there's people who know her a lot better than me)

Terry Westerfield, 11, was always protective of his little brother, Alan, who was seven-years-old. They lived with their mother, Margie, who worked as a beautician. She and the boys' father had divorced and she had since remarried a man called Carl Bock.
It was the 12th of September, 1964, and hurricane Dora was tearing through Georgia, making its way to Cumberland County, North Carolina, where the brothers lived. Margie was at work that afternoon. Carl was said to have arrived home at around 11AM.
In the late morning, both of the brothers were outside playing with neighborhood kids before retreating back inside. Afterwards, when their friends knocked on the door asking if Alan could come out and play, Carl told them he was in his bedroom as a punishment. Terry was last seen on his bicycle outside at around 1PM.
At approximately 4PM, a neighbors saw Carl leave the home. He later told police he had dropped the boys off a Broadway Theatre to see a new movie, adding that he arranged to pick them up at 8PM. Alan and Terry were regulars at the theatre; some workers reported that they saw them that evening while others were adamant that they were not there.
When Margie returned from work, Carl told her that her sons were at the theatre and she went out with a friend for the evening. When Carl went to pick them up at the assigned time, they were nowhere to be found. He said he assumed that Margie had collected them but when she returned late at night, she didn’t have the boys with her. A search ensued but they were nowhere to be found.
Their uncle, John McDougald, was adamant that Carl was somehow involved in the disappearance. Carl was an ex-military policeman and John believed that the cops helped him cover up the disappearance. Margie and Carl later divorced and she too considered him to be involved somehow. Carl was shipped overseas a year after their disappearance.
Alan and Terry haven’t been seen or heard from since the day they disappeared.

Welcome back, “Master Gracey” || The Haunted Mansion: The Ghost Realm
Tumblr media
“It’s been 60 years since my last visit… and I must say, it’s been quite a while, “Master Gracey”. Your eyes, they’re such a beautiful sky blue, with fair skin and lovely freckles. And your hair, such a long, soft purple with white streaks. It would look so beautiful in my hatbox. I’ll take good care of it, fufufu~ Sadly, there simply is no time to catch up, for he is coming. And that devil... he is quite unpleasant, I'm afraid so.”
If you would like to participate in this essence, don’t be shy! This essence is a part two to the Barriere Hotel packages! Because of this, you can find everything to do with this essence underneath the [hotel] tag, and therefore, please use [hotel] in your ask! Also, while some of the titles use gendered terms like "men", they can be any gender! However, some characters here have established genders, like Leona [who is a girl] while some are masculine/feminine PRESENTING but technically genderless [like Collecting and "Ba'al"] so just keep that in mind ^^ if you're unsure, just ask :]

Investigative Journalism || Short Character/Skin Descriptions
Collecting Millennium | ???
An oddball. Collecting the heads of different spirits and sealing them inside his hatbox, something about them seems... wrong. He doesn't seem to have ever been human... almost like he's pure spiritual energy.
“Master Gracey” | Sophia "Gracey"
A descendant of the Gracey family. She ended up on the Barriere Hotel's grounds due to a mysterious letter simply addressed to one "Master Gracey".
The Hitchhiking Ghosts
A pair of three hitchhiking ghosts. It's said they were taken before their time, and aren't ready to depart from the living just yet... and they follow no master.
The Head Chef | ???
A hot-tempered ghoulish chef who follows the orders of the Hatbox Master. They harbor a particular hatred towards the "Host", becoming an explosive ghost at the mere mention.
The Searcher | ???
A lost soul, torn in half by the "Host" and left to permanently wander the ghost realm, sobbing in sorrow. They follow no one, too confused to realize there is a path to be desired.
The 5th Dimension | "Ba'al"
One of the few sentient locals of the 5th Dimension. The title sounds familiar... but you can't put your finger on why?
A Sanguine Gaze | "Sanguine"
A follower of the Hatbox, "Sanguine" is loyal to the master who rescued her from an eternity of blind suffering.
My Flannel Lover | Diane Winter
The dearest friend of Sophia, and a dear friend who recently went missing...
Visions of Fog | Leona Romans
The ancestor of Lucien Aliceson and a medium bridging the ghost realm with our own. She was granted with the power of visions.
The Phantom 5
A quintet of traveling ghost musicians... with powerful, hypnotic ghosts. They are followers of the "Host"... and are quite a tricky gang too.
The Stretching Portrait: The Tightrope Walker | Margret "Margie" Misfortune
A melancholy soul who died in a bad accident, orchestrated by the "Phantom of the Manor"... She is trapped within the depths of the manor and has placed her trust in the Hatbox.
The Stretching Portrait: The Dynamite Gentleman | ??? Hatchaway
A humble, shy gentleman, yet... a bit pathetic, and clumsy. He does not like people, asides from his little sister, his only ally in this cruel world.
The Stretching Portrait: The Three Quicksand Men The ??? Siblings
A trio of three siblings, illegitimate children to the Misfortune Family. They were condemned to the quicksand pit by their father to keep the "pristine" nature of the Misfortune Family... and have been forgotten by nearly all of history. Naturally, they follow the Hatbox, for the "Host" is but a cruel gleam of a life they were robbed of.
The Stretching Portrait: The Black Widow | Caitlin Misfortune
The wife of Mister Misfortune, who murdered her husband after the effective slaughter of the quicksand men. Those boys may not be her true sons... but a mother's fury always has a price to be paid. She sides with no one, only doing what's in the best interest of her boys. All four of them.

BACKSTORY UPDATES
Tumblr media
for those who haven't noticed, i finally got an update done to cat's backstory that i've wanted to for years, but just couldn't quite figure out the story i wanted to tell. is what i've come up with final? possibly not, but i love it much more than the original idea... juvie was the last part of cat's story that literally hadn't been updated since i made her nine years ago. it was so. out there in her story. this post is going to be my best to summarize the changes, but if you've never invested time into reading cat's backstory, i'd appreciate it tons! here in the link for the lazies.
the lead up ( relatively unchanged ):
tinder, margie, and flint still help cat locate her aunt and uncle when they happen to be in the same area, and tinder helps cat find them.
the main difference is cat is now fifteen instead of fourteen.
cat, in her overcoming swell of emotion, proceeds to attack them... mary is protected because she holds timmy, but robert takes an absolute beating with one of her throwing knives.
he does not die, but it definitely doesn't look good when police arrive.
juvie ( updated with some minor non-changes ):
cat isn't charged for most of her crimes. due to the functioning of the ring, and the way she talks about being used and abused by them... she is never pinned for anything relating to murder or drugs or the like. thus, her charges consist of stealing, mostly, with the attempted murder on her uncle. this serious situation is what lands her in juvie.
cat still arrives in tears, she still is battling the absolute panic and anxiety that is building. this change in environment, this struggle... it causes her to remain uncombative. so she lets the others bully her relentlessly.
mary does not come to visit her.
cat is still pushed into sessions with margaret where she remains largely quiet for some time. it would take three months to get anything out of cat.
during those three months, cat remained apathetic in regards to those around her. the only person she befriended was vinnie. if one can call it a friendship. vinnie liked to chat and demean... cat listened. and much of what he would often say was degrading towards her. he would laugh about her and anything he found out, making her feel useless, unwanted, and even more isolated.
because of this, cat would still make a few attempts at suicide, but it was one of the guards, louie, who found her and stopped her each time. cat eventually gave up after only around three tries, never getting far enough to do lasting damage. too many cameras, security, eyes...
due to these attempts and the bullying, margaret actually appealed to get cat transferred to a different facility. as she fought to get this, cat finally leaked information about amy and jon, enough for margaret to get a hold of them.
amy and jon did come to visit, but cat basically ignored them and spurned the visit.
her emotions came to a head from this confrontation, and when rissa next attempted to bully her, cat finally fought back. and she fought back hard, even causing a few broken bones on the other.
rissa, who had thought cat was just some weak thief, was actually impressed by this and her bullying would actually turn to advances and interest, which in turn only made cat retaliate more.
cat's shift to violence led to the facility finally agreeing with margaret's transfer.
the "escape":
turns out cat hadn't escaped copper... no one left the ring willingly while he had the power.
he, crackshot, and birdie caused the van cat was being transferred in to crash. they killed the driver and guard with her, then they broke her out of the back and took off her handcuffs. copper gave her the chance to come back or die.
cat spat on him.
as copper was going to shoot her, the police did manage to arrive timely. he was forced instead to focus on them, giving her time to slip away, grabbing what things she had left in the van before taking off.
crackshot and birdie tailed her. but cat managed to escape into a river where crackshot fired his weapon. she didn't seem to surface so they returned to copper and pronounced her dead.
cat washed up downstream, barely having survived.
this all takes place within her fifteenth year. she turns sixteen not long after the escape, just before hackett.
the only other major change:
the only other thing is in cat's verse with scott ( homeward bound ), she does finally get to finish off copper when he, crackshot, and birdie basically launch an attack on her, amy, jon, scott, and his other family. she's forced to kill him to defend them while crackshot is arrested and birdie chased off.

Um... “happy” Father’s Day, everybody? 😅 Here’s some Jacob Cromwell content to mark the occasion -- specifically Jacob content that also features his estranged father, Evan Bach!
Those of you who are familiar with Jacob and Carewyn’s backstory are probably already aware that Evan was a pretty poor father. He tried continuously to shape Jacob in his image and only vindicated the opinions of others labeling him as a “delinquent”; he actively plugged out of his daughter Carewyn’s life from an emotional perspective, leaving her to be raised solely by her mother and brother; and worst of all, he abandoned his wife Lane and their children after the arrival of Jacob’s Hogwarts letter, unable to accept that his wife had lied to him about her and their children’s magic for so long and not wanting any part of the Wizarding World he’d have to join to be part of their lives. But at the same time, I never saw Evan as an inherently bad person, so I wanted to explore the generational trauma that both Evan and Jacob suffered through, and how it ultimately shaped them as people.
Evan Bach was the only son of Josef Bach, the son of a German immigrant raised largely by his uncle Jakob after the death of his father in the first World War. Josef learned from an early age how to lie to stay out of trouble with both his uncle and the authorities, and coupled with his chronic alcoholism, this led to him getting involved with a lot of petty crime. Josef’s childhood sweetheart Margie thought that having a family might help coax Josef to stay at home with her more, rather than spend his nights at speakeasies and pool halls, and at first, it seemed to work -- Josef wanted to put on a good face for his wife and newborn son, so he tried to hide his more illicit behaviors from them. Then Britain entered World War II, and Margie was forced to take one-year-old Evan out of Westminster and into the countryside to safety, leaving her husband behind. Soon Josef fell head-over-heels into organized crime, which actually flourished during the Second World War in Britain with most legal authorities having to focus on the war effort, and he soon became very rich working as an “enforcer” for a prominent London gang who participated in dozens of protection rackets. All the while, Josef wrote letters to his wife and son claiming he’d used that Ivy League education he’d convinced Margie he’d gotten somehow to land a job for the British government, and that with the profits he was making as part of the war effort, he’d bought them a huge house on an acre of land that they’d be able to enjoy together once the War was over. For Evan, who had next to no memories of his father aside from what his mother told him, he clung to these written lies enthusiastically, endlessly proud of the man he thought his father was and looking forward to the day that he and his mother would finally get to return home and meet him.
Sadly, while in the country, Margie became very sick and died in the winter of 1943, just before the end of the War. Following his wife’s death, Josef became all the more devoted to his gang life, and soon extortion, arson, and murder became everyday occurrences. Even so, on those few occasions when Josef would speak to his young son Evan on the phone, he’d lie about the weird noises and explosions the boy would hear in the background, saying that he’d be there to pick the boy up when he returned to Westminster and he’d take them home to their beautiful (and completely fictional) house outside the city. When the War was over, though, Evan did not find his father waiting for him at the train station, but instead his great-uncle Jakob -- for Josef, it turned out, had been lying to a lot more people than just his wife and son: he’d also lied to his bosses that he had no wife and children. And in order to keep up that charade, he couldn’t have Evan live with him -- so Josef asked "Uncle Jakob” to pick Evan up and take him in instead. The revelation of Josef’s lies and subsequent abandonment shattered Evan in a way he had trouble articulating to anyone, though he tried to once, when confiding in his future wife, Lane --
“I know what you mean. About your father, I mean. ...My father...wasn’t like yours, really. He was a crook, a liar...a petty criminal, in every way. ...But I know what it’s like, seeing the love other people seem to have for their kids and just wondering, ‘...Why? Why didn’t I have that, why couldn’t I have that? Why does my father have to put himself, and his wants, and his vices, first, instead of his family? Why isn’t he like those parents who, when faced with a tough choice, always choose their kid? ...Why didn’t he choose me...?’”
Not long after, Josef’s lies and crimes finally caught up with him, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment for all of the violent crimes he’d gotten wrapped up in. And so Evan was raised by his great-uncle, who desperately tried to take advantage of his “second chance,” raising the orphaned son of the boy the old man had raised as a son himself, and teach Evan to live an upstanding, honest life. Evan was so haunted by the corruption of his father through his addiction to alcohol, his proclivity toward violence, and his pathological lying that he was determined to be a man who would provide for his family the right way -- one who would be a proper role model for them, who would model the correct way to behave and instruct them about how to do the same. A man who wouldn’t let his son throw his whole life and potential away the way his father did.
Unfortunately Evan’s rosy view of fatherhood was complicated when his son -- named “Jacob” for the man who had largely raised him and had passed away five years previously -- ended up being both a wizard and a completely different person than Evan himself was. For as conventional and people-pleasing as Evan was, Jacob was opinionated and eccentric. For as rule-abiding and respectful of authority as Evan was, Jacob was rebellious and irreverent. For as uptight and conservative as Evan was, Jacob was wild and sometimes even violent, when provoked. Add to this Jacob’s distinct disinterest in any of the classic “father-son” activities Evan had envisioned them doing like fishing, playing catch, and going to sports games, as well as the boy’s frequent “misbehavior” (in truth outbursts of underage magic) that would get him into trouble at school, and Evan honestly didn’t know what to do to alter his son’s course. And because of his departure, Evan never saw just how hard his son worked to get top grades at Hogwarts, only to have his life upended by Lane’s father Charles and his criminal organization R and get locked in a magical portrait for seven years. Evan also never saw Jacob pull off the best, “underdog”-style comeback imaginable and graduate the school he’d been expelled from with honors so as to become a world-renown freelance cursebreaker and magical researcher. Nor did Evan ever see just how loyal, heroic, brilliant and loving of a man Jacob ended up becoming, even without his father there to mold him into what he thought he should be.
But perhaps, in a sad way, that’s the way things had to be. Evan had no desire to be part of the Wizarding World, the place where Jacob felt more complete and “himself” than anywhere else. He had no desire to lie to the people around him or to live a life outside of the straight and narrow path that had helped him move past his father’s tarnished legacy. He’d wanted to give his wife and children what he hadn’t had -- a stable, peaceful, middle-class life in Westminster, where they could just live normal, modest lives and grow into normal, upstanding people with normal, respectable careers. He’d failed in that...and ultimately, Lane -- the woman he loved, who chose him over her abusive family, who he cherished so much for having chosen him, over any other man in the world -- had chosen their son over him. Just as Jacob chose Lane over him...just like how their daughter would’ve chosen Jacob and Lane over him, if she’d had the choice. It’s not like Evan could’ve molded her any better than Jacob, even if he’d tried -- Lane said she was just as “normal” as she and Jacob were. And if Evan had stayed, it no doubt would’ve been out of duress, rather than out of sincere loyalty -- for how could he not resent a woman who he bared his heart and soul to and worked day and night to provide for, only to find out she had lied to him from the very beginning? Would he then only be a pocketbook for his family -- someone to write the bills every month, rather than someone to lead, protect, and guide them in being upstanding members of society? Someone for them to respect, love, and be devoted to, the way upstanding families were supposed to? Was he just meant to accept this life he’d never chosen for himself -- a life where he had to bow to the whims of the rest of his family, just because they had these bizarre, mysterious powers he didn’t have anyway to curb or restrain?
So perhaps Evan leaving ended up being the best outcome for all parties, however cowardly and cruel it was. If nothing else, the Obliviators assigned to keep tabs on Evan after his departure never found any evidence that he tried to expose Lane’s magic or the Wizarding World to any of his friends, associates, or remaining family, or even to the Muggle authorities. He never even made up any stories explaining away his departure to cast Lane in a bad light or absolve himself of blame -- not of her having an affair, nor of her being involved in any criminal activity, impropriety, or abuse. On the contrary, Evan always shut down any accusations of that nature, whenever anyone would suggest them.
“Lane lied to me,” was all he’d ever say. “That’s all it was, and that’s the last I’ll say about it.”
It seemed that, no matter how much Lane’s betrayal had hurt him and how much he resented how their children had chosen to follow her down a path far removed from the upstanding society he’d so wanted them to contribute to, as he did, Evan was an honorable enough man that he refused to tarnish his ex-wife’s name with lies and false accusations. For however poor of a father he was to Jacob, and however justified Jacob might be to hate the man, that honor at least can be respected.

headcanon : longbottom estate & family history.
the longbottoms have an ancestral house that has been passed down for generations called ' the oak's point '
Tumblr media
history,
to give a very brief overview, the longbottoms had a massive start as one of the few families to mass-produce and introduce wand productions across britain and scotland as far back as the 14th century
this was a possibility in part due to one of the longbottoms having been gifted a massive land by the royalty at the time as well as a title that had allowed him to cultivate the land — which was rich of the magical substances that made the wands
of course, knowing they would never surpass ollivander's influence in wandmaking, the longbottoms remained one of their main suppliers; a business partnership they carry well into the twentieth century
the longbottoms have also been involved in other industries such as providing materials and clothes for the mass production of robes, and aiding the royal family in supplying magical wood for the heightened interest in magical sailing back in the 15th century
in the 16th century, the longbottoms were already quite well-known as a family with inherited generational wealth, with the heir at the time amounting to ( in today's calculation ) half a million net worth.
today, augusta longbottom sits as the head to the longbottom fortune, with neville as her sole heir. she is worth around 7.4 million pound, while neville's net worth is expected to rise to 10.3 million pound by the time he leads the longbottom house as head.
Tumblr media
oak's point,
oak's point belonged to neville's ancestor who built the estate around the 15th century.
the estate encompassed around 12 acres of land, with the whole house being able to provide up to two hundreds occupant at the same time, if need be.
at present, it is with residents : housing augusta, enid, algie, and neville.
neville grew up in oak's point at the main residence ( called 'chestnut mansion' ) where he is watched closely by his grandmother, a governess, and a specially appointed house-elf, orla.
up until he's eleven, the year he goes to hogwarts, neville is homeschooled and is thus, quite sheltered.
neville was supposed to live at another part of oak's point, called the 'bur's cottage', because it was specially dedicated and gifted to frank and alice and it was where they plan to raise their family. as an adult, augusta gifted the cottage for neville to use, which he does — though sparingly, when he ended up mainly living at hogwarts.
the whole of oak's point now housed three main house-elves: totts, margie, and orla. they are being treated quite fondly and fairly by all members of the longbottom ( that is, if uncle algie isn't being annoying ) , though given the traditional view still practised by augusta, they aren't considered as free creatures at all.
current members of house longbottom,

augusta, aged 64 neville, aged 22

algie, aged 55 enid, 50

This is as far back as I personally have photos for. 1925~99 years ago. There's older photos among parts of the extended family. I've always heard there is a photo of one of my Slave ancestors. If I find it, I'll share it here. This is of my maternal family was taken on Formosa in 1925.
Standing in back was my Great Grandfather Lai Ja. A nationalist involved with 1920's first Republic of China. Political problems then the Japanese invaded in 1931. So part the family moved to San Francisco. Speaking of Sino family history. I was told that members of the family fought on both sides during the Chinese Civil War.
That, and when my sister Sylvia went to China researching our family. She found that not only did some in our original town remember us but some of from our family were armed partisans that fought the Japanese.
Gets better. ...or worse.
I also had relatives on both sides of the Korean War.
I had older cousins in that conflict. Cousins on 'both' sides. Chinese and American cousins in the same war at the same time in opposite waring armies. There's a Netflix script in that.
I love telling my family history. Mind you there's different versions within different branches. Such is oral history. Bottom line my Mom's side ended up here in the land of hope and gross contradictions. My dad from the Deep South with its Slave history.
To Great Grandpa's left is my Great Grandmother Paulina. My mother was close to her.
On her right is my Grand-Uncle Louie. Who as a lad ran away with a circus troupe. This was the dream of boys in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Uncle went and did it for real!
Later he joined the Merchant Navy and did convoy runs during World War Two.
To his right was my strong-willed Grandmother Violet.
A very independent tough business person. Despite that she was swell. Loved her. She made me a Mickey Mouse Club hat...with them big ears. That and taught Sylvia...my dear sister and I to bake cookies. She read our palms all the time and told us tales of wandering spirits.
When we all got TV in the 50's. She and I would watch The 'Lawrence Welk Show'. She loved the music. Sometimes we'd tune to My Little Margie. She didn't like westerns because of what they did to the Native folks. When she took care of us, she made sure we said our prayers. The amber glow of family.

(What's My Line? First contestant top left, Hal Block top right, first contestant bottom left, Frankie Laine bottom right.)
Day 52- TV and Radio:
TV:
What’s My Line? season 3, “Frankie Laine,” August 10th, 1952.
My Little Margie, season 1, episode 9, “Margie’s Mink,” August 11th, 1952.
The Beulah Show, season 3, episode 4, “Beulah Goes Gardening,” August 12th, 1952.
Radio:
Radio’s Best Plays, “Uncle Henry,” August 10th, 1952.
The Chase, “The Amusement Park,” August 14th, 1952.
On What’s My Line today there was more gender role flipping. The first guest was a pretty young woman from Minneapolis who was a gas station attendant. Even when they flashed her occupation on the screen for the audience to see, there was a loud roar of surprise and laughter. It took me aback at first, until I thought more about it. I guess even today I’m a little surprised when a woman is working at a car shop or an oil place. I love it, though, I don’t laugh. I think the audience laughed mostly because she presented herself on the show as a very well dressed and well-groomed pretty young lady. The juxtaposition was probably the biggest shock. It was also an interesting insight into just how masculine a gas station attendant was viewed as then.
This young woman also had to deal with all the men around her on the show. When she signed in, audience members were whistling. The males on the panel all drooled over her. The panelist Hal Block is always the most egregious. He was a humorist, and must have been single, because he was always coming on to the women if they were attractive. For some reason he doesn’t bother me as much as other game show hosts who do this. I think it’s because he is not schmoozy at all- he acts kind of desperate and sadly vulnerable. He’s also funny about it. As an example of what he does: when the guest first sits down, the panelists get a free guess on their occupation. Hal Block said, “I think she’s a bill collector, and she can call me Bill!”
...And now a word from today’s best sponsor: Drat, It's another “none” day. Unless you want to go with Stopette for Finesse again. Until tomorrow, then, everybody remember not to smell! (Poofing some powder or pouring some "flowing cream" recommended, of course.)

Theresa Russell: A Rational Voice in Times of Emergency
Tumblr media
You know 9-1-1, those three lifesaving numerals. And you know to use them when something is really, really wrong. Like when a law is being broken or someone has been hurt and in need of emergency care or when one person is threatening other people, and those scenarios are only a few of the reasons why people dial those three digits. 9-1-1. And Theresa Russell, a native of North Wheeling, has been the lady in charge of those three digits so long she was referred to initially as the “Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor” before the higher-ups cut the crap and started referring to her simply as the 9-1-1 Director. Ohio County’s dispatch center, located in the basement of the Ohio County Courthouse at 1500 Chapline Street, is a 24-hour service and she and her dispatchers were honored last week during National Telecommunications Week. Why? Well, have you ever heard a frantic person describing their house is on fire? About an uncle who accidentally shot themselves in the cheek? A mother calling about their son turning blue during an overdose? Or a child screaming about their parents beating each other? Or, have you heard an elderly woman call for an ambulance for her dead husband? A crash victim who was mashed into a median? Or have you taken a call from a suicidal individual simply searching for someone to talk? Be sure Theresa Russell has, and so have her staff members, and while you would have no idea how to react or respond, she and her fellow dispatchers must. That is why, for several years now, 9-1-1 dispatchers throughout the state of West Virginia have been lobbying to be considered pension-wise as, officially, “EMS first responders” in state code. Russell, her Ohio County dispatchers, and 9-1-1 personnel throughout the Mountain State are, after all, literally THE FIRST to respond, correct? Theresa is married to Randy Russell, a long-time Ohio County employee who recently was named the administrator of the Ohio County Commission. What is the biggest difference today in your childhood neighborhood? I grew up in North Wheeling at a time when it landmarked Washington Grade School, Wheeling Hospital and its nurse’s residence, Sacred Heart Grade School and Sacred Heart Church, Dotty’s and Delmonte’s Restaurants, Margie’s Food Mart, two Ross’s food stores (where you could forge a note from your mom and charge “stuff” on their weekly food bills), and Wilson playground just to name a few.  Friends lived on every block!     With the exception of Wilson playground, all that remains are fond memories of a great era. What is the best advice you have ever offered a younger person? I would have to say that the best advice that I believe to have ever offered is:  If you don’t really know what it is that you want to do with your life after high school? Choose a trade skill!   Something that you can take with you wherever you may want locate that would gain you immediate employment!  Trade laborers are necessary wherever you wind up. What sport did you play when you were a kid and were you any good? Please explain. Wweell, as memory serves, I think it was in fifth grade when I attempted girls’ softball.  Although I made it through a season, I say “attempted” because I’m a lefty who absolutely could not master the ability to catch the ball in my left hand and throw with my right hand! I recall my coach always joking, “catch the ball, take of the glove, and throw the ball!”  Haha … he was obviously a very patient coach! What has been the most frightening 9-1-1 call you have ever taken as a dispatcher? Please explain. This is a tough one because I really feel that I have trained my brain to only remember the ones that turn out for the best.  But personally, the most frightening for me would be a call that I took early on when I was new at the job. I took a call from the neighborhood where I lived. The caller said that a young boy was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. I knew my sons were out riding their bikes when the call came in. My professional side told me that I had to get the call out with no emotion, but the mother in me was scared that it could be my child.  I thought that I had done well but the paramedics who responded must have thought otherwise because they came across a private radio channel shortly after arriving on scene and said, “Theresa, you can breathe now! It’s not one of your kids!” Whew. Her family is what is most important to Theresa, and she keeps them in mind while serving all residents of Ohio County. Finish this sentence: ‘I’m so old, I remember when …’ Being a kid didn’t mean you got an allowance!  If you wanted spending money to buy candy, pop, chips, or just whatever, you went around the neighborhood and collected pop bottles that you could cash in for .10 cents each! The Malevolent Tides: First Except!
A post-TLH story! Synopsis here.
Note: I chose an excerpt with characters who are all named in the synopsis so you can figure out who they all are!
~~~
“Sororicide is illegal,” Margie piped in, which Elizabeth did not think was particularly helpful.
“Is cousin-icide illegal?” Edmund asked darkly, glaring at Vienna. He had gone to stand next to Cadia, who was grinning at him sideways.
“Luckily for you, we aren’t really cousins,” Vienna said, batting her eyes once more, “So really, we can be together. The Clave cannot keep our love apart.”
Edmund scowled.
“I think all murder is illegal,” Alaina chimed in helpfully; she had wandered over to her grandparents, and was seated between Will and Tessa on the couch.
“Sometimes murder can be justified,” Will said diplomatically, wrapping an arm around Alaina’s shoulders, “For example, have I ever told the tale of the time I slew your great-grandfather, the evil, pox-ridden Benedict Lightworm?”
“Will!” Tessa chastised again, but it was for show; Will had already told them all the story, many, many times.
“I thought Uncle Gabriel killed the worm,” Matthew said, and James groaned. Elizabeth couldn’t help but smile - her father clearly didn’t want to hear the story again.
“Clearly you need a reminder,” Will said, grinning enthusiastically. “It was a dark and stormy night-”
“-it was the middle of the day,” Tessa interjected.
“-and young Gabriel Lightwood barreled into the institute, bloody and terrified, seeking my world-renowned expertise on a vile disease called demon pox.”
“How does one get demon pox?” Alaina asked innocently.
“You know the song, dear granddaughter,” Will said, beginning to sing, “‘One must go down to the bad part of town, and stay until-’”
“I think that’s enough of the story for today!” Jesse said quickly, covering his daughter’s ears.
Four small drabbles from whumplovers collaboration prompt week 2.
At first, he didn’t believe it.
The man had gone on sewer expeditions, on hazardous ruin crawls for some stupid material that he needed for a commission. He barely came back with scratches.
He wasn’t dead. He wasn’t. He wasn’t!
But the day of his rescue turned into the week, and his superior was handing over some of the things they managed to recover from the site. Along with his tools, (not his pickhammer, not his sword, those were stolen-) there was Jackson’s jacket, damaged from… from...
His uncle curled protectively around him when he started crying into the fabric.
-
William was struggling.
He needed to get to the Civil Corps and warn them about what Gillies had planned. However, the injuries he sustained while trying to get out of the death trap that he was left in was taking its toll. He wasn’t sure if he would get out in time to warn everyone.
Stumbling out of a door, he was greeted with Rebecca and Nate, who must have been enjoying a late picnic. *How rude of me to interrupt.* “Gillies,” he mumbled, before collapsing on the grass.
“Well, ain’t this an interruption?” Nate cracked. Rebecca shook her head.
-
He had heard some sort of variation of the words several times in his short life. Never his sister, who didn’t care for him even before their parents deaths. It was those that he had after, that winced in empathy when he came home with black eyes and split lips. Ice held to one of his injuries while he heard a range of threats from Jackson and arguments from Uncle Tommy and Aunt Margy, to a strange combination from the two men that gave him a new home.
A strange way of feeling wanted and loved, but he’ll take it.
-
Margaret hadn’t made a blanket for their first child. She wasn’t quite close enough to Thomas to do that for the couple that he was bonded to through service. However, the second pregnancy to Hiram and his wife let her be prepared. Fabric requested from the new builder in Portia and she had well enough to make a decent baby blanket for number two.
Black and green weren’t the normal-est of combinations for young boys, but Yelinda couldn’t stop staring at it in shock, and Llewellyn had a tight hold on it when it was placed on him.
Absolutely perfect.
Is there a hunter that doesnt scare you as much as the rest?
Tumblr media
“Well, for one, she’s just a gorgeous dancer...! Don’t get it twisted, she’s a real fearsome hunter — terrifying, when she wants to be. But... of everyone I’ve met, she has also been the most merciful. I’ll never forget the match where I first encountered her...”
Tumblr media
“...They say we fear what we don’t understand. If that’s true, then... I guess I do understand her, a little. She’s... angry, lost, betrayed, that much is clear just by looking at her. I... know how that feels. And I guess, deep down, maybe there’s something... appealing about what she has become. About... being powerful and frightening and angry, after being the powerless and frightened and quiet one for so long. Meeting her eye at the end of a chase, sometimes it... feels like looking in a mirror. It’s... scary and comforting at the same time. To know that there’s something incredibly human about these hunters.”
Tumblr media
“...It’s not just that, though. There’s.. something else that’s familiar about her. Recalling it feels like trying to hold onto a dream after waking, but I can’t shake the feeling that perhaps...”
Tumblr media
“...I’ve seen her somewhere before.”
