i love this album so much i think it was a very particular crystallisation of circumstances that led to me discovering witch house in 2017 on wikipedia but i digress
the sound is so uniquely disconcerting, the best way i can describe it is swampy. the vocals sound like theyve evaporated and are just hanging over the instrumental like thick humid air. very southern gothic pilled; or in my case very tropical gothic pilled
listening to this album literally feels like listening to a dark jungle festering in the mid afternoon heat transmuted into sonic form. or some kind of swamp like i mentioned. like a shrek swamp with skeletons hidden in the silt. anyway i love this album
my fav track is definitely we rot because the overbearing synths over the absolutely terrifying sample at the end really brings that image of a relentless white hot sun across. it’s like the sun’s energy is driving an imperceptible swelling towards some unspeakable terror which i like very much idk if that makes sense you just have to listen to understand. honestly it’s giving bataille and the accursed share
i recently wrote an essay about the tropics and its various perceptions and one point that came up was how the tropics are characterised simultaneously by ennervating languor and vital excess (i.e. lack and excess of energy) and i think this album encapsulates that feeling so perfectly it’s kind of Weird. because the synths are so washed out and ghostly (like theyve been bleached by the sun, like theyve been long dead) but also there’s an underlying current of energy which crescendoes to a scream (like literally a scream) at the end of the album. there’s something about the songs that suggests both deathly lethargy AND unwholesome vital-excess (think the vital-excess of maggots infesting a corpse, or the exuberant colorations and bloating of said corpse) which suggests the tropics in my head for sure.
also the oppressiveness of the entire album coheres really well with the oppressive heat and humidity of swamp/tropical climates which is probably a less contrived explanation for why this album is so strongly reminiscent of the tropics for me.
