cont... could you may be let me know what parts you liked stylistically and if you think the boys will be good,? what is your expectations from it and, yeah, as a poc, i hate the white washing, but as an lgbt, i am excited! it sucks that i have to explain myself for rooting for it. it’s like, “are you gonna support this white washing shit?” any way, i am excited to see the boys dressed as the pope and making out under water.

(1) i read your tags about how skam italia looks a lot same with the og, i’m not starting a discourse with you but it looks different too. i really loved how they incorporated skam into it in a new style. cinematically it’s different. it has this stranger things tone to it which i just love! i love romance that has that subdued, synth pop tone to it. of course the trailer could come off well and it could have a lot of similarities with og, but it has made me 70% more curious than i was before.

hello! i mean, yes, for sure it looks cinematographically different (and very nicely i might add, it’s very beautiful for sure) but i don’t know really - i feel like the basic story seems the same just in a different context? instead of kosegruppa they might meet in a radio class/station or whatever. i don’t really feel personally like that is all that different but that’s just me! and it’s not bad, not at all, just that i feel like it’s not that different haha. plus that this is just the trailer, so we have no real clue what will happen in show. 

the parts i liked stylistically? hm, i think the scenes with them looking at each other while kissing someone else was very nicely done, especially with the light just hitting italian even’s eye there. that was cool. i liked the radio shot a lot too - especially with a two-faced italian isak shot since that encapsulates that idea of isak putting up fronts in real life (and italian even with that cute nod). i loved that shot of them biking away from the st. peter’s basilica as it’s even more significant that isak’s story incorporates religion too. a high profile lgbt story portrayed so boldly in front of the house of the catholic religion? amazing. so i mostly can’t wait to see what they’ll do with the story in that regard. (would’ve been better if they had an actual muslimah being isak’s support though). 

i don’t really have a lot of expectations, tbh. i just feel a little like they’ll make everything a little bit.. bigger than the original? maybe a little more dramatic than the original. but that’s just a feeling i have. also i think they’ll delve more into isak’s family life than the original did. i don’t really know if the boys will be good! i am very much rooting for italian!even though, as i mentioned. i think that will turn out to be a well-cast character in the series and maybe the most reminiscent of the original even. sweet and mysterious at the same time. 

for now, i’ll probably keep an eye out for the cinematography, italian!even and the religious theme in the story, haha. 

#let's just hope the same level of comfort between isak and even is reached in the remakes #bc that is what made the original such a success #and i'm sorry you're in such a split #it's certainly a difficult situation bc on the one hand i know italy's lgbt community could use a story like this #but i also don't want to dismiss the very valid criticisms of whitewashing #but maybe if we'll keep mentioning it they'll rectify it somewhat in later seasons #who knows #skamitalia #Anonymous #ask

even and isak, are white. there’s no denying that. yes they are people who belong from a minority group (lgbt+ and mental illness), and yes, they are white.

the girl squad, are white. there’s no denying that. yes, some of them belong to minority groups (lgbt+ and mental illness), and they are white.

sana’s season thus far has revolved around everyone but her. it feels like everyone else’s storylines have come before her own one has and has been given far more coverage than her own one has.

every storyline she is in is linked to other people and their pasts. she has no poc friends. jamila and her squad and sana have very clear tension running between them, they do not get on. i would have loved for this season to have had them 2 sort out their differences and find peace between one another, but idk when/if that will happen. the sharmuta on sana’s locker still sends chills down my spine when i see it.

white people will not, and never will, understand poc struggles. that is our own struggle that we have, that is ours. non muslims will not understand the struggles muslims have. that is our struggle, that we have.

so, in that case, where does that leave sana? 1 poc muslim girl up against so many of her non muslim white friends.

how about this: how about, sana being happy with whereever she is, whoever she is with, that makes her happy at that point in time. if that’s a week with noora and a day with even, why not. if that’s 3 days with isak and one hour with vilde, then why not. if its a weekend with the girls and weekdays with the boys, why not. sana’s happiness comes first, not the comfort of white people. rather, those people should make the effort and step up. try to gain some insight. educate themselves. enlighten themselves a little bit.

but you know what else is equally important? and something sana would never do? dismiss any kind of real turmoil. be it bipolar disorder, be it being gay or lesbian, or having an eating disorder, or being an abuse survivor. sana would not mock that. she would give her full support and be there for her friends. no matter how long she has known them for: for as long as she’s known even, or the girl squad, or isak.

because struggles matter. as a poc muslimah, no one knows struggle and feeling outcasted quite like she does. and she’d respect people’s struggles, and if they were struggles of her friend’s, be they the boys or the girls, she would respect them even more.

so, the question is, when is sana gonna get that respect back? when are her struggles going to get that attention, care and respect? when will they be highlighted? when will someone reach out to her, no matter who it is, but when will it be sana’s turn?

This is a genuine curious question( I just really hope I don't come across as rude or anything) but why are you so excited about the Balloon Squad? Would you still be excited if they were white? alright, now i can focus my eyes a bit better and i’m not on the verge of falling asleep. i also know that some people do wonder about this, genuinely, because i do say quite a lot i don’t care about boys/men/whatever etc (which is still true) but here’s the deal:

this season is about sana. and i lovelovelove sana. i love the fact we get to see the world from her eyes and meet the people close to her, see how they interact.

i love this mostly for the selfish purpose because sana is a #Fave but also because of the political reasons that we’re featuring a muslimah main, a woman of colour main and i have nothing but absolute trust that julie and iman are gonna give us the realistic view on it.

so the balloon squad. i’m excited because, well, usually men of colour in media following the route of toxic masculinity. thus far, i haven’t seen that in the balloon squad. they jump on elias for calling sana slavekvinne. the messages between elias and sana come off as complete sibling-esque, and to me, it feels like just when my brother is checking in on me, testing the waters like, did she become really mad at me for X reason etc.

so no, truth to be told, i wouldn’t be as interested in this if they were another white boy squad because i wouldn’t be interested for the political reasons. i wouldn’t have the same feeling of #Relate when seeing boys of colour interact with each other. i haven’t yet seen something that makes me feel uncomfortable around this squad, and especially not on the same level of discomfort i had seeing dickhelm and p-chris (throwback to anxiety attacks :))

this season isn’t really about the balloon squad either, it’s about sana, it’s about how she sees the world, and it’s definitely going to have impact on other youth.

that is not to say, however, i wouldn’t have minded seeing more girls on the show, women of colour, dark skinned women etc., but i’ll take what i get. this level of honest and realistic portrayal of our lives is rare in media. and i’m not even muslimah.

what i think people need to do is sit back down, relax, and just watch. if they don’t enjoy it, fine, but don’t take it out on us. i absolutely loved season 3 for a whole other reason, that being me having that feeling of #Relate to a white gay boy, because of my own family issues and because i’m lesbian. what i relate to, i will enjoy, as long as i don’t feel like it’s too poorly done or something.

i still stand by the fact that no matter how many marginalised groups you add in to a tv series or a movie, it can still suck, it can still feature toxic stereotypes and even have the opposite effect. but i have no doubt that skam is not going to be that web tv series.
