born and raised in misty hollow, gabriel’s family has relatively deep roots within the town. the man comes from old money, with all the law firms he owns having been passed down from generation to generation. his father was a part of this business and his mother, on the other hand, is your typical southern belle, moved here from a small town in texas. she was a corporate lawyer ( it’s how she met gabriel’s father ) but since becoming a mother she really has had no interests in any other occupation other than trophy wife and socialite.

to say that gabriel’s parents were old school would be putting it lightly. basically, both of his parents were deeply religious republicans and were very aware of their image as a family. they were harsh parents, extremely controlling when it came to their children’s lives but at the same time were also really emotionally absent. to this day they still believe that it was all in the name of tough love but obviously it was just emotional abuse.

his father was especially hard on gabriel, he was a strong believer in physical discipline and thought gabriel to be too “soft”. he was always berating him, punishing him for petty offences, and pretty much just fostering your typical environment of toxic masculinity. though he never laid a hand on gabriel’s sister as she was what he called, “a lady” and his “pride and joy.”

but gabriel was a good kid, he was obedient aside from stupid mistakes that kids are bound to make. he was your typical golden boy, a jack of all trades of sorts. not exceptionally good at one thing, but averagely good at a multitude of things. he was a quick learner and dedicated, anything he took a crack at, he eventually excelled in. but all those opportunities he was given as a child; being able to practice multiple instruments, getting extra coaching and tutoring in activities of his choice — definitely gave gabriel a leg up among his peers.

throughout high school, he mostly kept to himself, choosing to focus on his education and after graduating, he went to harvard where he earned a dual degree in business and law and carried on through with law school. the plan was to move to boston where the business’ main office was and work for his father, making his way up until he was ready to inherit it all himself.

ok this is where things get shoddy cause everything from above is part of an old intro so if this doesn’t make sense dont look at me ndfjsndjk but i imagine this is where gabe met his future wife ? i don’t want to set anything in stone for when that role gets picked up but ! gabe’s always been .. well-meaning, for a lack of a better word. like in the beginning he initially wanted to go into criminal law and become a prosecutor before his dad pressured him into staying in corporate. these good intentions were really able to develop during his time away from home, i think. he was able to develop his own opinions and views, different from his parents.

but gabriel’s always lived to serve and aims to please, giving himself to others until there’s nothing left. and he still has this really messed up view of his relationship with his parents, especially his dad. it’s just something he’s never been able to shake. out loud, he would never utter a word against them and in his head, he’s justified his father’s actions, forcing himself to think of it in a way that made it okay because putting his actions under any other sort of light would have felt like he was betraying him.

and while he didn’t have the same dreams and ideologies as his father, gabriel felt as if there was really no choice other than to adapt. it’s what’s been expected of him since he was born. so, he poured himself into his work despite hating every minute of it, his pride preventing him to be the one to drive generations of hard work into the ground. and gabriel was good at it, like really good. and he let himself believe he loved what he did, associating the feelings of success with enjoyment.

and in regards to his own family, i think that things in the beginning were good and almost picturesque, y’know? like the vision of a white-picket-fence type of family. but as the years went on, the more time he spent working with his father and the family business, he subconsciously allowed his father’s habits and tendencies into his own head. He succumbed to his parents’ influences and allowed their ideas of success and vision for his and his family’s future to become his own.

and i think one day gabriel looked in the mirror and straight up did not like what he saw. he’s fully aware of the mistakes he’s made in the past and he feels the heft of those mistakes everyday, but what is he supposed to do now ? it’s too late, he’s too far in. and so gabe did what he does best, he compartmentalized and began distancing himself from the family. spending more time at the office than at home because the farther you are away from people, the less likely you are to hurt them right ?

i’m gonna keep this loose cause i’ve noticed i tend to diverge from them a bit when i actually start playing my muses !

but gabriel is the fakest mf you’ll ever meet. all smiles and formalities, he’s like a goddamn politician i hate it. but i think if he were ever to let this decades long charade fall, everything just falls apart for him, y’know? his emotional sitch is like a house of cards, everything being perfectly curated and placed

he’s incredibly loyal to his family, he’d do anything to protect his family. and like sure, he loves them more than anything, but i think this loyalty comes more so out of duty than love, y’know ?

smart as a whip, always calculating and very cunning. the dude’s a shark in the courtroom and has he done morally questionable things to win a case? probably

idk i think... gabriel as a whole is a moral grey area. i rlly do love him and this version of him is always fun to play but we ! shall see !

Toonami Weekly Recap 10/19/2019

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba EP#02 - Trainer Sakonji Urokodaki: Tanjiro continues to make his way to Mt. Sagiri, carrying Nezuko in a clothed straw basket on his back during the day. That night, they encounter a demon feeding in a temple, who attacks Tanjiro. Tanjiro barely manages to fend him off, but Nezuko manages to decapitate it with a kick. Tanjiro manages to pin the demon's head to the tree using his axe and pushes its still-alive body off a cliff. An old man with a tengu mask approaches the siblings and orders Tanjiro to kill it, but he hesitates until daybreak, where the sunlight burns the demon to ash. The man, revealed to be Urokodaki, worries that Tanjiro's kindness and weak resolve will be his undoing should he become a demon hunter, but nevertheless brings him and Nezuko to Mt. Sagiri. Urokodaki leaves the sleeping Nezuko in his cabin and brings Tanjiro to the peak of the mountain, ordering him to return by daybreak, as a test to see if he is fit to become a demon hunter. However, the test may not be as easy as it seems as the mountain road is filled with booby traps, greatly slowing his progress, coupled with the fact that the air is extremely thin. Tanjiro manages to use his keen sense of smell to detect the scent of the traps and evade most of them, allowing him to return just in time. Urokodaki recalls a letter sent by Giyū requesting that he train the siblings, and acknowledges Tanjiro.

One-Punch Man 2 EP#02 (14) - The Human Monster: During the meeting, Garou insults both the heroes and the villains, saying that he is on the side of monsters and declares everyone as his enemy. He beats up everyone using his martial arts skill except Sitch as a message to spread the word of Garou. Meanwhile, Saitama is at his house playing video games on the PlayStation Portable that he stole from King, while Genos is doing chores when Genos hears a knock on the door. Genos opens the door to see Speed O Sound Sonic trying to find Saitama to fight him. While Genos and Sonic fight someplace else, Fubuki, going by Hellish Blizzard, is the B-Class Rank 1 hero who tries to persuade Saitama to join her faction. Fubuki fails to convince Saitama, and orders her underlings to attack him, but Saitama easily beats them in one punch. Fubuki uses her psychic abilities to seemingly defeat Saitama, but Saitama remains unfazed from her attacks. He then berates her for surrounding herself with underlings, as she thinks that if she's surrounded by underlings she would be stronger. However, he tells her she would eventually face a villain that would be stronger than her and her underlings. Saitama proclaims that factions are useless, and warns the esper to never insult heroes ever again. Fubuki ignores his lecture and tries to attack him again, but Saitama sees Sonic and Genos fighting behind her and an imminent explosion. When the explosion clears, it is shown that Saitama saved Fubuki from the blast while remaining unscathed himself. During the scuffle, it seems that there is no clear winner as Sonic is too fast while Genos is way too durable. Genos tries to create a huge explosion which would knock out Sonic, but Saitama knocks Genos down, reminding him that if he made the explosion, it would have destroyed Saitama's apartment. Saitama then challenges Sonic, and hilariously counters Sonic's shadow clone move with Killer Move: Serious Series Sideway Jumps (by side jumping really fast). Sonic is shocked, and in the moment Sonic passes through the after images, he crashes to the ground, badly bruised and defeated, while Fubuki watches the whole thing in awe of Saitama’s ease of defeating such an obviously powerful opponent. Later in Saitama’s apartment, Fubuki reveals that she is the younger sister of Tatsumaki, S Class Hero Rank 2 known as Tornado of Terror. Due to Tatsumaki being overwhelmingly strong compared to her, Fubuki gathers underlings to be stronger. Genos asks why she doesn’t strive to be Class A Rank 1, but Fubuki says she can't because Amai Mask is Class A Rank 1, and he is too strong. Elsewhere, Amai Mask brutally kills a monster named Suppon, emphasizing her point. Fubuki also says that she would never be Rank Number 1. Fubuki tries to convince Saitama one last time to join her faction, but Saitama refuses. Before Fubuki could insult him, King arrives to retrieve his video game. Fubuki is shocked to be in King’s presence, while Saitama tries to explain that he accidentally destroyed the PSP as well as erased King's saved data. The Hero Association gives Saitama the hero name Caped Baldy because of his appearance, while Genos is named Demon Cyborg due to his aggressive attacks. In the closing scene, Garou defeats Tank Top Vegetarian in an alleyway.

Dr. Stone Kingdom of Science Arc EP#09 - Let There Be the Light of Science: During their ramen patronage, the gang are approached by Gen Asagiri, a magician from Senku's time, who had been sent by Tsukasa to confirm Senku's death but claims he will give a false report instead. Using the successfully completed iron, Senku takes advantage of a sudden thunderstorm to turn it into powerful magnets. While Gen uses his street magic to ward off a violent villager named Magma, the gang use the magnets to build a power generator which they manage to convince Kinro and Ginro to operate, leading to the reinvention of the lightbulb.

Fire Force EP#12 - Eve of Hostilities in Asakusa: The fire fighters, including Company 8, commence reconstruction of Asakusa following the destruction by Benimaru, and relations improve between the two companies. However, the White Hoods dupe Benimaru into believing that Obi and Hinawa are creating Infernals and he attacks them. Obi and Benimaru fight each other to a standstill, and Konro risks his life to stop Benimaru and forces him to listen to reason. As Koro recovers from his injuries, he tells the 8th the story of his injuries. He suffers from tephrosis, permanent damage inflicted his body, after he exceeded the limit of his pyrokenesis when he saved Benimaru from a powerful Infernal.

Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma (Training Camp Arc) EP#15 - The Man Called "Carnage”: As the students make their way home, Shinomiya decides to return to France to make his restaurant the best in Paris, while the other alumni explain how the training camp also serves as a recruitment ground to determine potential for future employment. Soma ends up missing his bus and has to hitch a ride back to school with Erina, who explains the next event, the Autumn Festival. Returning to the Polar Star Dormitory, Soma is surprised to see his father, Joichiro, who is revealed to be an alumnus and former member of the Elite Ten who went by the name Jouchirou Saiba. As Joichiro treats the returning residents to a meal, Fumio explains that Joichiro and Dojima were once fellow Polar Star residents who were responsible for many of the luxuries the dorm has. It is also revealed that Erina has fond memories of Joichiro as well. Later that night, Joichiro tells Soma about his campus memories, filling him with more determination. The next morning, Joichiro challenges Soma to a cooking battle.

Lupin the 3rd Part 5 EP#18 - Fujiko's Souvenir: One day, Lupin finds his hotel room's toilet clogged. The resulting sanitary restriction, their need for secrecy, and Goemon's strict preference for Japanese cuisine creates friction among Lupin's gang, which is not helped when Fujiko unexpected appears, apparently let in by a drunk Lupin the previous night. While they wait for the plumber, Fujiko begins to act secretively about the bathroom, and they suspect one of her usual schemes against them. The situation becomes more complicated when a passing Zenigata is attracted by the smell of Goemon's cooking and pays a brief visit. In the end, it transpires that Fujiko had dropped by for a special anniversary between herself and Lupin, complete with a gift which she hid in the toilet's water tank, inadvertently causing the blockage.

Black Clover: Elf Tribe Reincarnation Arc EP#91 - Mereoleona vs. Rhya the Disloyal: Yuno learns from a defeated mage that the Midnight Sun is planning to be reborn into their true forms. Asta encounters a clone of himself causing confusion, until Mereoleona sets them both on fire, exposing Rhya as capable of using Copy magic to recreate the spells of other mages. He attempts to use Yami's Darkness magic but Mereoleona sets his spell on fire then punches him in the face. Elsewhere, Mereoleona's brother, Fuegoleon, appears to almost awaken from his coma. Mereoleona's power proves to be a match for Rhya's multiple magic's, even with his third eye activated. Zora reveals that Mereoleona spends most of her time living in the wilderness and has grown impossibly powerful by absorbing nature's magic. Furious, Rhya summons a copy of Asta's Demon Slayer Sword, but it is easily destroyed by Mereoleona as it was merely a copy of the sword and contained no Anti Magic. Mereoleona reveals she can use a powerful ability, Mana Zone, to completely control all the magic within a defined space, and annihilates Rhya, shocking Asta who knows from experience how powerful members of the Third Eye are. Elsewhere, Yuno's skill leads Mimosa to suspect Yuno is also capable of using Mana Zone. They follow the sound of a powerful heartbeat and find a mage floating within a sphere of light.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind will premiere its English Dub on Toonami this Saturday at 2:30 AM.

After The Sunset, Pt.1

Enchanted Forest. Past. Night. (A wagon pulled by two horses travels through the night through a thunderstorm. Coming to a stop outside a walled garden, the unwell husband calls from inside the wagon.) Marcus: “Why'd you stop, Rapunzel?” Rapunzel: (Lowers her hood and turns into the wagon:) “Because I found our family something to eat.” Marcus: (Coughing:) “I'm sorry the burden falls to you to look after us all.” Rapunzel: “You're a brilliant tailor, Marcus. Once I mend you, you'll stitch together the life we've always dreamed of for our family.” Anastasia: “Are you sure it's safe to go in there, Mama?” Rapunzel: (Holding up her lantern:) “The lanterns will connect us. You'll see mine in there, and yours will guide me back to you here. (Thunder continues to rumble outside:) Remember, for my family, I'll always find a way.” (Rapunzel jumps down from the wagon and, holding her lantern, enters the walled garden through the partially opened gate.) Walled Garden. (Rapunzel makes her way through the garden and begins to gather food into a sack for her family. A flash of lightning lights the sky, revealing a cloaked figure standing above Rapunzel, causing her to yelp in surprise.) Gothel: (Magically taking the sack from Rapunzel:) “Who dares trespass in Gothel's garden?” Rapunzel: (Stands:) “I'll apologize for taking some food, but I won't apologize for trying to help my family. My husband is sick. My kids have gone two days without a bite.” Gothel: “Many people come here in an attempt to steal my magic. (Looks through the sack:) And yet, here you are selflessly risking my ire for radishes? It's rare to find a flower that can grow amongst the weeds of human nature.” Rapunzel: “I meant no disrespect. I can work as payment, if that pleases you.” Gothel: “If your family is your be all and end all, what would you sacrifice to give them a better life?” Rapunzel: “I would do anything.” Gothel: “Anything is something I can work with. We have a deal.” (Gothel drops the sack on the ground and pulls a small bottle from her pocket. Pouring some of the contents into her hand, Gothel looks to Rapunzel before throwing the contents at her. Immediately, vines begin to bind Rapunzel’s wrists as a cloud of dust surrounds her.)

Tower. Interior. (Looking down at her wrists, Rapunzel is slow to realise her surroundings have changed. When the vines release her, she finally notices that she is now inside a candlelit room. Rushing to the window, Rapunzel opens the shutters and sees that she is now at the top of a very tall tower in the middle of the forest.) Gothel: (Appearing from behind:) “There is no way out of this tower.” Rapunzel: (Stalking towards her:) “I never agreed to this.” Gothel: “Oh, but you did. (Circling Rapunzel:) You swore to pay any price for your family's happiness. And there's a distinct difference between theirs and yours.” Rapunzel: “They'll come for me.” Gothel: “But they'll never find you.” Rapunzel: (Runs to the window once more and screams:) “Marcus! Help! Anastasia! Drizella! Help me!”

Storybrooke. Swan-Mills House. Present. (Waking with a start, Regina sits up in bed, an anxious look upon her face. Taking a few calming breaths, Regina flips open the bed covers and walks over to her closet. Staying with the bed, we see another body slowly stirring. Raising one eyelid and then the other, Emma lifts her head to check the bedside clock. Her suspicions confirmed, the sheriff groans as her wife has once again awoken far too early.) Emma: "Gina, come on, it's Saturday. No one should be up at this hour." Regina: (Distractedly looking through her clothes:) "I'm not asking you to be." Emma: (Slumping back on her pillows:) "You can't seriously still be looking for something to wear to Henry's graduation?" Regina: (From the closet:) "Oh, hush. It's a big day and I have to look the part." Emma: "Regina, you could wear a burlap sack and still look the part." Regina: (Reentering the room:) "Well we're fresh out of burlap. (Walking to the full length mirror, holding a black dress to herself:) What do you think of this one?" Emma: (Looking up at the ceiling:) "Without looking I can guess it's probably black, fits you like a glove and makes your ass look amazing. (Finally looking over to her:) Am I right?" Regina: "Very funny, dear." Emma: (Sitting up:) "Gina, seriously, you've tried on everything in your closet at least twice by now. Henry won't care what you wear, he'll just be happy if you don't weep openly in front of the whole school." Regina: (No longer listening. To herself:) "Perhaps the royal blue dress. Oh and those black heels..." (Regina continues talking to herself as she heads back inside her closet while Emma rolls over, attempting to go back to sleep.)

Storybrooke Docks. (Henry and Hook sword fight aboard the Jolly Roger. Henry gains the upper hand, causing Hook to retreat to higher ground. Henry gives chase but the pirate manages to force him backwards. Emma arrives just in time to see Henry pin Hook against the ship's rigging.) Henry: (His sword pointed at Hook, confidently:) "Always watch the blade. I got it." Emma: “Wow. I'm impressed. You fight like your grandfather.” Henry: (Annoyed, turns to face her:) “Mom, we're practicing.” Hook: (Disarms Henry:) “Actually, we just finished. (Knocks Henry to the deck:) Like I told you, always keep your eye on the blade.” Henry: “What's the point? I'm never gonna be good enough.” (Ignoring Hook’s proffered hand, Henry stands and walks away.) Hook: “What's going on with him lately?” Emma: “Oh, teenagers. He's almost an adult.” Hook: “Ah, he's about to leave home, isn't he?” Emma: (Shrugs:) “I don’t know what he wants to do. He still hasn’t chosen a college yet.” Hook: “I'll go talk to him.” Emma: “What, and to convince him to go on rum runs with you?” Hook: “No, to try and understand what he’s going through. (Quietly:) If I can understand one moody teenager perhaps-” Emma: (Scoffs:) “Perhaps you’ll understand your own? Well, Lily is my age and far from a teenager. Whatever her problem is, you won’t learn anything from Henry about it. I thought you two were getting on great these days?” Hook: “We were. We are. (At Emma’s look, sighs:) It’s not just her, it’s Mal, too. Every time I try being affectionate with her lately there just seems to be this barrier between us.” Emma: “There’s a lot of that going around.” Hook: “Oh really? Things not all as they seem at the Mayor’s mansion? Tell you what, Swan. Why don’t we do each other a favor: You speak to Lily and Maleficent and I’ll talk with Henry and your missus?” Emma: (Smiles:) “Thanks but no thanks. Regina still hasn’t forgiven you for what happened during the Black Fairy’s curse.” Hook: “That wasn’t even me!” Emma: (Laughs:) “I don’t think it matters. She only has to hear your name and she tenses up. (Sighs:) Besides, I think I know what the problem is.” Hook: “Aye? And what’s that?” Emma: (Turns to look over at Henry:) “Same as what’s troubling Henry. For the longest time it was just Regina and Henry, and now with the graduation coming up, things are gonna change.” Hook: “Henry leaving home isn't an ending, Emma. There's more to come. And Regina isn’t going to be alone because she has you.” Emma: “I know that. But I think it’s gonna be hard for them when the time comes.” Hook: (Thinks:) “It's gonna be okay. What if I told you I have something to make things a little less terrifying?” Emma: (As Hook pulls a bottle from his pocket:) “A little bottle of rum? Because I wouldn't say no...” Hook: “No, it's a little bottle of magic. You speak your message in here, add the name of your favorite pirate, drop it in the water, and before you can say ‘Yo-ho-ho,’ it'll find the person you seek.” Emma: “A message in a bottle.” Hook: “Mm-hmm.” Emma: “Thank you.” Hook: “Look, he's grown into a fine young lad, and he is lucky to have a pair of mothers like you and Regina.” Emma: “He's lucky to have a friend who’s a pirate like you. He's gonna be fine. And so will things with Maleficent and Lily. These things just take a bit of work. You’ll see.”

Enchanted Forest. Past. The Tower. (Rapunzel sits etching a mark into the stone fireplace to record yet another day of her captivity. Stepping over her own extremely long hair, she takes a seat, staring into the fire. After a moment, her gaze is caught by hundreds of lanterns floating outside the window. Getting to her feet, Rapunzel looks down at the foot of the tower and decides she's stayed long enough. Gathering up her hair, she cuts most of it off and uses it as a rope. Gathering her belongings, she takes a step out onto the ledge.) Rapunzel: (To herself, holding the ‘rope’ tightly:) “Remember your family. Be brave.” (With a deep breath, Rapunzel steps off the ledge and escapes the tower.)

(Running towards the source of the lanterns, Rapunzel comes upon her two daughters who are talking amongst themselves.) Drizella: “They're serving dessert in the parlor. We should go in.” Anastasia: “I can't give up on our mother, Drizella. One of these lanterns could help guide her back to us.” Drizella: “It's been six years, Anastasia.” Anastasia: “I know it's silly to believe, but something feels different about tonight.” Rapunzel: (Approaching:) “My girls.” Anastasia: (Turns toward her:) “Mother?” (Anastasia runs into her mother’s arms.) Rapunzel: “You're so grown up. I saw the lanterns, and I knew it was you.” Marcus: (Stepping out of the house:) “Rapunzel? (They embrace:) I thought you were dead. I searched for weeks. All I found was your tattered cloak.” Rapunzel: “It was a trick. A witch promised me you'd all thrive, but my side of the bargain required me to be locked away in a tower. But the love of my family helped me survive all this time. I'm so happy I'm finally back to share it with you.” Cecilia: (Exiting the house:) “Marcus?” Rapunzel: “Marcus?” Marcus: “I had no idea that - (Turns, introduces the woman:) This is my wife, Cecilia.” Cecilia: (Smiling at Rapunzel:) “Now who might you be?”

Trump’s border wall is vulnerable to flash floods, needs large storm gates left open for months

NACO, Ariz. — President Trump's border wall probably will require the installation of hundreds of storm gates to prevent flash floods from undermining or knocking it over, gates that must be left open for months every summer during "monsoon season" in the desert, according to U.S. border officials, agents and engineers familiar with the plans.

The open, unmanned gates in remote areas already have allowed for the easy entry of smugglers and migrants into the United States.

At locations along the U.S. southern border where such gates already are in operation, Border Patrol agents must manually raise them every year before the arrival of the summer thunderstorms that convert riverbeds into raging torrents that carry massive amounts of water and debris, including sediment, rocks, tree limbs and vegetation. Trump's wall, which features 30-foot metal bollards spaced four inches apart, effectively acts as a sewer grate that traps the debris; when clogged, the barriers cannot withstand the power of the runoff.

Because the gates typically are located in isolated areas that lack electricity, they cannot be operated from afar. That requires the Border Patrol to leave the gates open for months, increasing the need for U.S. agents to monitor the sites because smugglers and other border-crossers can enter through the large gaps and advance northward following stream channels and narrow canyons to avoid detection.

The flooding risks are one of the biggest engineering challenges to the president’s vision of a linear man-made structure spanning hundreds of miles of desert, canyons and mountains. But the Trump administration has said little about how it plans to manage the hydrology of the border region.

Though Trump has boasted that his new “border wall system” will be an impermeable force against illegal crossings and drug trafficking, the need for open gates is another notable weakness that smugglers and migrants can exploit to slip through the barrier and evade capture.

Smugglers have learned how to cut through the new steel bollards using common tools they can buy at hardware stores, and some have demonstrated that the wall can be climbed with handmade ladders and rope. And most of the hard narcotics that enter the United States via Mexico pass through official border crossings, hidden in vehicles and among cargo, not through the remote areas where Trump’s new barriers are being erected.

Roy Villareal, chief of the Border Patrol’s Tucson sector, which covers most of Arizona, described the addition of the floodgates as an example of how his agency has learned to adjust to the realities of the Southwest’s extreme weather and topography.

“The border is so diverse,” Villareal said. “You have to plan for water flow. . . . People think it’s just this monolithic wall, sort of like the Great Wall of China, where you drop it into place and that’s all there is to it. And that’s not the reality at all.”

John Ladd, whose cattle ranch extends along the border for about 10 miles west of tiny Naco, said the Border Patrol and the Army Corps of Engineers began installing 18-foot bollards on his property in 2008, adding “lift gates” that could be opened during the summer to allow floodwaters through.

Ladd, who supports Trump and his wall project, said his span of the border now has about 70 gates, and U.S. agents use a forklift to raise them at the beginning of every summer. They initially were designed to be hoisted by agents using the winch on their Border Patrol vehicles, Ladd said, but the gates were so heavy that “the front end of their trucks would start lifting off the ground.”

When the gates were first installed on Ladd’s ranch, smugglers would drive through the openings with loads of marijuana, he said, so the Border Patrol lowered the height of the opening to four feet. The vehicle incursions have stopped, but illegal crossings and smuggling increase along his property during the summer months when the gates are left open, the rancher said.

“They know as soon as the Border Patrol opens them,” he added, referring to traffickers in Mexico.

Veteran Border Patrol officials acknowledge that the government would be foolish to place vertical metal bars in the direct path of rivers and creeks that swell to dangerous volumes during summer storms. The U.S. southern border is crisscrossed by hundreds of drainage channels and several rivers. One Arizona river, the Santa Cruz, starts in a U.S. valley, flows through the mountains into Mexico and returns to cross the border again with more water.

Outside of the high-traffic areas, much of the U.S.-Mexico border through New Mexico and Arizona is lined with vehicle barriers that are welded from old rail tracks. Though they would stop a car or truck from crossing, they allow water and debris — as well as wildlife and people — to pass through.

Trump’s border project is replacing those barriers with the steel bollards, which act like a sieve and can impede water flow.

At several locations in Arizona where construction crews are racing to erect the structure, workers have been leaving gaps at creek beds and river channels because they do not yet have the new fencing panels with storm gates. Older vehicle barriers remain in place along those sections, the gaps akin to missing teeth.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Washington declined to respond to questions about how many storm gates they plan to install and where they would be located.

But Villareal and other Border Patrol officials said the storm gates, and their need to be left open all summer, amount to a relatively minor challenge that can be compensated for using technology such as cameras and sensors — along with more agents.

They also say a barrier with openings is preferable to no barrier at all, and the gaps can help them by funneling foot traffic into areas where they can concentrate their interdiction efforts.

“At the end of the day, you still need an individual to monitor and make that arrest,” Villareal said. “What’s been tested, and seems to work well for us, is opening them up at the beginning of monsoon season, and at the end of monsoon season, closing them back down. Which means for the patrol agent in charge of that particular area, he or she has to deploy manpower to cover that area when the gates are open.”

The storm gates are different from the much larger vehicle gates the government installs along the Rio Grande in Texas to allow farmers, U.S. agents and others access to land that becomes cut off from the rest of the United States by the barrier. Those gates can be quickly opened and shut and do not need to remain open to manage flooding.

White House officials this month acknowledged that they are preparing to divert an additional $7.2 billion from this year’s Defense Department budget for wall construction, money that will allow the administration to complete nearly 900 miles of new barriers by 2022.

If that plan goes forward, it probably will include new barriers in mountainous areas where the force of floodwaters is even greater and engineers would need to install even more storm gates through canyons and creek beds.

In 2011, a 40-foot span of mesh-style border fencing collapsed in Arizona’s Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument after storm debris became trapped against the structure, causing floodwaters to back up.

“They came in and installed gates, but it was a challenge for the Border Patrol,” said Lee Baiza, who was the park superintendent at the time. “How do you man those gates during weather events?”

Baiza said the president’s border barrier project is likely to exacerbate the risk of damage, because the crews building the structure and the adjoining road have loosened and disturbed soil, rocks and plant life, all of which can be picked up and carried away in sudden rushes of water.

“It’s a fragile environment, so if you go drive across that country, you will loosen up the soil and brush,” Baiza said. “The more activity, the more it gets run over, the more debris you create.”

Another section of border barrier toppled in 2014 near Nogales, Ariz., when U.S. agents failed to open the floodgates in time, sending mud and stones into nearby homes. And in 2008, two people in the Mexican city of Nogales, just across the border, were killed in catastrophic flash floods that inflicted millions of dollars in damage, with some of the blame falling on a Border Patrol project that placed bars into cross-border culverts with the intention of blocking illegal crossings.

The gates have created logistical problems for U.S. officials, who must physically lift and lower the gates with the changing of the seasons. In the fall, Border Patrol crews sometimes struggle to close the gates on Ladd’s Arizona ranch, he said, because the openings accumulate rocks and sand during the summer.

Despite what border officials said about sensors, Ladd said agents have told him they cannot leave sensors in the stream channels and canyons while the gates are open because they, too, risk being swept away by flash floods. He said he has not seen an increase in summer patrols, either.

The San Pedro River, which starts in Mexico and flows north into Arizona at the edge of Ladd’s property, meanders for much of the year or dries up. But its sandy flood plain is as wide as a football field.

At the site where it crosses the border west of Naco, Border Patrol agents must remove everything in the river’s path, even the permeable vehicle barriers, to prevent them from being swept away.

“There’s no way you can put a bollard fence in here,” said Laiken Jordahl, an environmental activist with the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity. On a recent afternoon, he counted 18 cottonwood trees next to the river at the border crossing that appeared to be tagged for removal, some of which were mature. “They’re trying to take every inch they can,” Jordahl said.

Crews were preparing to install new barriers, but border officials haven’t said what type of gates they will use at the river.

“This is a wildlife superhighway,” Jordahl said, listing the species that traverse the border through the stream channels: antelopes, deer, coyotes, bears, bobcats, ocelots, javelina.

On a bright January day, the river’s cool waters ran just a few inches deep, but the San Pedro’s latent power was visible a little higher on the riverbank. A tangle of logs, mud and other flood debris was snarled against a tree, 10 feet above the river channel.

According to legend, Saint Barbara was the extremely beautiful daughter of a wealthy Greek heathen named Dioscurus, who lived near Nicomedia in Asia Minor. Because of her singular beauty and fearful that she be demanded in marriage and taken away from him, he jealously shut her up in a tower to protect her from the outside world.

Shortly before embarking on a journey, he commissioned a sumptuous bathhouse to be built for her, approving the design before he departed. Barbara had heard of the teachings of Christ, and while her father was gone spent much time in contemplation. From the windows of her tower she looked out upon the surrounding countryside and marveled at the growing things; the trees, the animals and the people. She decided that all these must be part of a master plan, and that the idols of wood and stone worshipped by her parents must be condemned as false. Gradually she came to accept the Christian faith.

As her belief became firm, she directed that the builders redesign the bathhouse her father had planned, adding another window so that the three windows might symbolize the Holy Trinity.

When her father returned, he was enraged at the changes and infuriated when Barbara acknowledged that she was a Christian. He dragged her before the perfect of the province, who decreed that she be tortured and put to death by beheading. Dioscurus himself carried out the death sentence. On his way home he was struck by lightening and his body consumed.

Saint Barbara lived and died about the year 300 A.D. She was venerated as early as the seventh century. The legend of the lightning bolt which struck down her persecutor caused her to be regarded as the patron saint in time of danger from thunderstorms, fires and sudden death.

Events that seem like out of this world…so rare and so beautiful that you won’t believe they truly exist. Two words – MINDBLOWINGLY AWESOMATIC!

1. Aurora borealis (Northern Lights)

Location: Above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres of the Earth. (Polar regions)

The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. These collisions vary in color due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Nitrogen produces blue or purplish-red aurora. Scientists have learned that in most instances northern and southern auroras are mirror-like images that occur at the same time, with similar shapes and colors. Because the phenomena occurs near the magnetic poles, northern lights have been seen as far south as New Orleans in the western hemisphere, while similar locations in the east never experience the mysterious lights. However the best places to watch the lights (in North America) are in the northwestern parts of Canada, particularly the Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Alaska. Auroral displays can also be seen over the southern tip of Greenland and Iceland, the northern coast of Norway and over the coastal waters north of Siberia. Southern auroras are not often seen as they are concentrated in a ring around Antarctica and the southern Indian Ocean.

2. Lenticular Clouds

Location: Can be found anywhere on Earth, provided the conditions are right for its formation

Lenticular clouds, technically known as altocumulus standing lenticularis, are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction. Where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a range of mountains, a series of large-scale standing waves may form on the downwind side. Under certain conditions, long strings of lenticular clouds can form, creating a formation known as a wave cloud. Lenticular clouds have been mistaken for UFOs (or “visual cover” for UFOs) because these clouds have a characteristic lens appearance and smooth saucer-like shape.

3. Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence can be created in a rare number of environments. It is a glow produced by algal blooms. The blooms carry and support millions of the bioluminescent dinoflagellates. Bioluminescence is used by dinoflagellates as a defense mechanism to escape predators. Bioluminescence can really only be seen in the darkness, so you have to be in a light free zone to witness it. The plankton light up whenever they are disturbed, though only for a moment. The greater the disturbance, the brighter the glow — boats typically create the most intense effects. Numerous species of phytoplankton and certain jelly fishes are known to bioluminesce, and the glow can be seen in oceans worldwide at all times of year. Even though dinoflagellates are single-celled organisms, some of them are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. They wash up on shores and it looks like glitter. Walk in them and your footsteps will glow.

4. Frost Flowers

Location: Anywhere on a cold morning provided the conditions are right.

As beautiful as it is rare, a frost flower is created on autumn or early winter mornings when ice in extremely thin layers is pushed out from the stems of plants or occasionally wood. This extrusion creates wonderful patterns which curl and fold into gorgeous frozen petioles giving this phenomenon both its name and its appearance. As the temperature gets to freezing or below the sap in the stem of the plants will expand. As it does so the outer layer of the stem comes under increasing pressure and microscopically thin cracks, known as linear fissures, begin to form. These will finally give way under the pressure of the sap and split open. Water is continuously being drawn up the plant’s stem while the ground remains unfrozen. It travels up the plants external stem and reaches the split or splits. As it does so, it oozes slowly out and it freezes. Yet more water is coming behind it. This new water reaches the cracks and it too freezes, pushing the previous slither of ice away from the stem. In this manner the amazing ‘petals’ that you see in these pictures are formed.

5. Supercell

Location: Supercells can occur anywhere in the world under the right pre-existing weather conditions, but they are most common in the Great Plains of the United States in an area known as Tornado Alley and in the Tornado Corridor of Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil.

The most threatening and deadliest of all thunderstorms, a supercell is characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft. For this reason, these storms are sometimes referred to as rotating thunderstorms. Supercells are often isolated from other thunderstorms, and can dominate the local weather up to 32 kilometres (20 mi) away. Supercells can be any size – large or small, low or high topped. They usually produce copious amounts of hail, torrential rainfall, strong winds, and substantial downbursts. Supercells are one of the few types of clouds that typically spawn tornadoes within the mesocyclone, although only 30% or fewer do so.

6. Volcanic Lightning

A dirty thunderstorm (also, Volcanic lightning) is a weather phenomenon that is related to the production of lightning in a volcanic plume. A famous image of the phenomenon was photographed by Carlos Gutierrez and occurred in Chile above the Chaiten Volcano. Other instances have been reported above Alaska’s Mount Augustine volcano,and Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano.Volcanic lightning, the researchers hypothesize, is the result of charge-separation. As positively charged ejecta makes its way skyward, regions of opposite but separated electrical charges take shape. A lightning bolt is nature’s way of balancing the charge distribution. The same thing is thought to happen in regular-old thunderstorms. Smaller eruptions tend to be accompanied by more diminutive storms, which can be difficult to spot through thick clouds of ash. What’s more, lightning activity is highest during the beginning stages of an eruption, making it all the more challenging to capture on film.

7. Finnish Lapland Structures

Rising eerily from the frozen landscape, these strange shapes look like something from a science-fiction film. But they are here on Earth, frost-covered trees located close to the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can drop as low as -40C. In the dramatic sub-zero conditions, the snow and frost become so thick that everything is covered in a thick blanket. The picture was taken in winter in Finnish Lapland where weather can include sub-freezing temperatures and driving snow.

8. Fire Rainbows

Location: Fire rainbows can only be seen on locations north of 55°N or south of 55°S.

Fire Rainbows are neither fire, nor rainbows, but are so called because of their brilliant pastel colors and flame like appearance. Technically they are known as circumhorizontal arc – an ice halo formed by hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals in high level cirrus clouds. The halo is so large that the arc appears parallel to the horizon, hence the name. Brightly colored circumhorizontal arc occur mostly during the summer and between particular latitudes. When the sun is very high in the sky, sunlight entering flat, hexagon shaped ice crystals gets split into individual colors just like in a prism. The conditions required to form a “fire rainbow” is very precise – the sun has to be at an elevation of 58° or greater, there must be high altitude cirrus clouds with plate-shaped ice crystals, and sunlight has to enter the ice crystals at a specific angle. This is why circumhorizontal arc is such a rare phenomenon.

9. Mammatus Clouds

Location: Most commonly found in The United States.

Mammatus is a meteorological term applied to a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud. They are pouch-like cloud structures and a rare example of clouds in sinking air. As updrafts carry precipitation enriched air to the cloud top, upward momentum is lost and the air begins to spread out horizontally, becoming a part of the anvil cloud. Because of its high concentration of precipitation particles (ice crystals and water droplets), the saturated air is heavier than the surrounding air and sinks back towards the earth.The temperature of the subsiding air increases as it descends. However, since heat energy is required to melt and evaporate the precipitation particles contained within the sinking air, the warming produced by the sinking motion is quickly used up in the evaporation of precipitation particles. If more energy is required for evaporation than is generated by the subsidence, the sinking air will be cooler than its surroundings and will continue to sink downward. The subsiding air eventually appears below the cloud base as rounded pouch-like structures called mammatus clouds.

10. Sailing Stones

Location: Little Bonnie Claire Playa in Nevada and most notably Racetrack Playa, Death Valley National Park, California

Sailing stones refer to a geological phenomenon where rocks move and inscribe long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or animal intervention.These stones can be found on the floor of the playa with long trails behind them. Somehow the stones slide across the playa, cutting a furrow in the sediment as they move. Experiments show that moving of stones requires a rare combination of events. First, the playa fills with water, which must be deep enough to form floating ice during cold winter nights but shallow enough to expose the stones. As nighttime temperatures plummet, the pond freezes to form thin sheets of ‘windowpane’ ice, which must be thin enough to move freely but thick enough to maintain strength. On sunny days, the ice begins to melt and break up into large floating panels, which light winds drive across the playa, pushing rocks in front of them and leaving trails in the soft mud below the surface. Several other theories have been proposed for this phenomena but none have been able to explain it clearly. Some of the stones weigh more than 300 kg. That makes the question: “what powerful force could be moving them?”

11. Light Pillars

Location: Typically seen in polar regions, the vertical columns of light have also been reported to be seen with frigid temperatures at lower latitudes.

Light pillars appear when artificial light or natural light bounces off the facets of flat ice crystals wafting relatively close to the ground.When the light source is close to the ground, the light pillar appears above the floating crystals. When the light comes from the sun or moon, the light pillar can appear beneath them, too, as the light refracts through the crystals. The light can come from the Sun (usually when it is near or even below the horizon) in which case the phenomenon is called a sun pillar or solar pillar. It can also come from the Moon or from terrestrial sources such as streetlights.

12. Morning Glory Clouds

Location: The Morning Glory cloud is a rare meteorological phenomenon occasionally observed in different locations around the world. The southern part of Northern Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria is the only known location where it can be predicted and observed on a more or less regular basis.

The Morning Glory cloud is a rare meteorological phenomenon consisting of a low-level atmospheric solitary wave and associated cloud. The wave often occurs as an amplitude-ordered series of waves forming bands of roll clouds. A Morning Glory cloud is a roll cloud can be up to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long, 1 to 2 kilometres (0.62 to 1.24 mi) high, often only 100 to 200 metres (330 to 660 ft) above the ground. The cloud often travels at the rate of 10 to 20 metres per second. The Morning Glory is often accompanied by sudden wind squalls, intense low-level wind shear, a rapid increase in the vertical displacement of air parcels, and a sharp pressure jump at the surface. Cloud is continuously formed at the leading edge while being eroded at the trailing edge. In the front of the cloud, there is strong vertical motion that transports air up through the cloud and creates the rolling appearance, while the air in the middle and rear of the cloud becomes turbulent and sinks. The cloud quickly dissipates over land where the air is drier.

13. Colored Mountains (Zhangye Landforms)

Location: Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China and several other places in China.

Yes, believe it or not this insane technicolor mountain formation does exist…FOR REAL! Layers of different colored sandstone and minerals were pressed together over 24 million years and then buckled up by tectonic plates. Danxia landform is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.

14. Penitentes

Location: On very high-altitude glaciers, such as those in the Andes mountain, where the air is dry.

These marvelous structures are tall thin blades of hardened snow or ice closely spaced with the blades oriented towards the general direction of the sun. They usually formed in clusters and range from a few centimetres to 2 meters but penitentes as high as 5 meters has been recorded. These pinnacles of snow or ice grow over all glaciated and snow covered areas in the Dry Andes above 4,000 meters. Penitentes are a common sight in the regions between Argentina and Chile. They form when the sun’s rays turn snow directly into water vapor without melting it first, a process called sublimation. An initially smooth snow surface first develops depressions as some regions randomly sublimate faster than others. The curved surfaces then concentrate sunlight and speed up sublimation in the depressions, leaving the higher points behind as forests of towering spikes.

15. Snow Donuts

Location: Snow, under the right conditions of formation.

Snow donuts are formed when a clump of snow falls off of a cliff or a tree into the snow pack. And if the conditions and temperature are just right, as gravity takes over, it pulls the snow down, and it rolls back on itself. Usually the center collapses and it creates what we call a pinwheel. But when the hole stays open, it creates a shape that resembles a car tire covered with ice, or a gigantic, white Cheerio!

The following conditions are needed for snow rollers to form:

-There must be a relatively thin surface layer of wet, loose snow, with a temperature near the melting point of ice. -Under this thin layer of wet snow there must be a substrate to which the thin surface layer of wet snow will not stick, such as ice or powder snow. -The wind must be strong enough to move the snow rollers, but not strong enough to blow them apart. -Alternatively, gravity can move the snow rollers as when a snowball, such as those that will fall from a tree or cliff, lands on a steep hill and begins to roll down the hill. Because of this last condition, snow rollers are more common in hilly areas. However, the precise nature of the conditions required makes them a very rare phenomenon.

16. Sun Dog

Sun dogs are an atmospheric phenomenon that consists of a pair of bright spots on either side on the Sun, often co-occurring with a luminous ring known as a 22° halo. Sun dogs are a member of a large family of halos, created by light interacting with ice crystals in the atmosphere. Sun dogs typically appear as two subtly colored patches of light to the left and right of the Sun, approximately 22° distant and at the same elevation above the horizon as the Sun. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sun dogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the Sun is close to the horizon. Sun dogs are commonly caused by the refraction of light from plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals either in high and cold cirrus or cirrostratus clouds or, during very cold weather, drifting in the air at low levels, in which case they are called diamond dust. The crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°. As the crystals gently float downwards with their large hexagonal faces almost horizontal, sunlight is refracted horizontally, and sun dogs are seen to the left and right of the Sun.

17. Desert Rose

Location: Deserts under the right conditions.

Desert rose is the colloquial name given to rose-like formations of crystal clusters ofgypsum or baryte which include abundant sand grains. The ‘petals’ are crystals flattened on the c crystallographic axis, fanning open in radiating flattened crystal clusters.The rosette crystal habit tends to occur when the crystals form in arid sandy conditions, such as the evaporation of a shallow salt basin. The crystals form a circular array of flat plates, giving the rock a shape similar to a rose blossom. Gypsum roses usually have better defined, sharper edges than baryte roses. The ambient sand that is incorporated into the crystal structure, or otherwise encrusts the crystals, varies with the local environment. If iron oxides are present, the rosettes take on a rustic tone.

18. Brinicles

A brinicle forms beneath sea ice when a flow of extremely cold, saline water is introduced to an area of ocean water, being the undersea equivalent of a hollow stalactite or icicle. At the time of its creation, a brinicle resembles a pipe of ice reaching down from the underside of a layer of sea ice. Inside the pipe is the supercold, supersaline water being produced by the growth of the sea ice above, accumulated through brine channels. At first, a brinicle is very fragile; its walls are thin and it is largely the constant flow of colder brine that sustains its growth and hinders its melt that would be caused by the contact with the less cold surrounding water. However, as ice accumulates and becomes thicker, the brinicle becomes more stable. A brinicle can, under the proper conditions, reach down to the seafloor.

19. Earthquake Lights

Location: Just before an earthquake.

An earthquake light is an unusual luminous aerial phenomenon that reportedly appears in the sky at or near areas of tectonic stress, seismic activity, or volcanic eruptions. The lights are reported to appear while an earthquake is occurring, although there are reports of lights before or after earthquakes. Many hypotheses have been proposed for the explanation of the phenomenon, but no clear explanation exists as such. For instance, The most recent model suggests that the generation of earthquake lights involves the ionization of oxygen to oxygen anions by breaking of peroxy bonds in some types of rocks by the high stress before and during an earthquake. After the ionisation, the ions travel up through the cracks in the rocks. Once they reach the atmosphere these ions can ionise pockets of air, forming plasma that emits light.

20. Frozen Bubbles

Location: Most commonly located in Abraham Lake, Alberta, Canada.

These natural wonders are made of highly flammable gas methane. The gas – emitted by bacteria after they consume dead organic matter – is fairly harmless, but these bubbles can cause an explosion if lit. The strange phenomena is caused when permafrost in the area begins to thaw out. Organic matter stored in the bottom of the lake begins to thaw out, and microbes decompose it, releasing methane. Methane does not dissolve into the water, and instead forms bubbles that rise to the surface. In summer, the methane bubbles simply rise to the surface and pop to enter the atmosphere. However, when the lake is frozen in the winter, the bubbles become trapped on their way to the surface.

21. The Hessdalen Lights

Location: Hessdalen valley in the municipality of Holtålen in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway.

The Hessdalen light most often appears as a bright white or yellow light of unknown origin standing or floating above the ground level. Sometimes the light can be seen for more than one hour. There are several other types of unexplained lights observed in the Hessdalen valley. Unusual lights have been reported in the region since the 1940s or earlier. Especially high activity of Hessdalen lights took place from December 1981 until the summer of 1984 when lights were observed 15–20 times per week. The frequency of the lights caused a gathering of numerous tourists staying there overnight to see the phenomenon. Since then, the activity has decreased and now[when?] the lights are observed some 10–20 times per year. Several explanations have been put forward but none seem to provide a clear concept of the phenomenon.

22. Ball Lightning

Ball lightning is an unexplained atmospheric electrical phenomenon. The term refers to reports of luminous, spherical objects which vary in diameter from pea-sized to several meters. It is usually associated with thunderstorms, but lasts considerably longer than the split-second flash of a lightning bolt. Many early reports say that the ball eventually explodes, sometimes with fatal consequences, leaving behind the odor of sulfur. Many scientific hypotheses about ball lightning have been proposed over the centuries. Scientific data on natural ball lightning are scarce, owing to its infrequency and unpredictability.

Nintendrone Editorial 01: The version you can actually read!

Nintendrone Editorial Entry 1 - "Your Sword Is Badly Damaged"

An "extremely biased" review of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Hello. This is Matthew Young, and my newly made "Nintendrone Editorial", an attempt to review video games that I purchase and play, so that you, the reader, can know whether or not said game is worth purchasing and playing. For my first review, I will tackle the recently released nineteenth installment to the critically acclaimed Legend of Zelda series, Breath of the Wild. I will give a fair warning that while the title Nintendrone is in jest, I, like many, have been a fan of this game series since I was a young child. Of course, I'll make an effort to hold my nostalgia down while talking about Zelda, but it could come all crashing down in one colossal fanboy bias of praise. That said, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best game ever made, and if you say otherwise, you are wrong and everything you like is bad just like Horizon: Zero Dawn, which is a stupid dumb baby game! ...kidding of course, let's take a deeper look...

Waking up and setting out... So let's start with the synopsis. Breath of the Wild sees Link once again in the iconic kingdom of Hyrule, though it has seen better days. Left in ruins for one hundred years by the malevolent force, Calamity Ganon, who has imprisoned Princess Zelda within Hyrule Castle. Link must arise and defeat the porcine perpetrator and return Hyrule to its former glory. And you are completely free to do this in any way you want. You start your journey on the Great Plateau, a sort of tutorial area if you will, so you can learn and master the game's mechanics before setting off into the rest of Hyrule. And might I say what a great way to learn the trappings of a video game. In a modern industry where developers shove every single facet of your moves in horribly dull, horribly mandatory tutorials (cough cough Twilight Princess), it's a breath of fresh air to see a game simply push you out into a world and let you learn how to survive it on your own. Of course, little messages will pop up and give you pointers on how not to die, but the tricky stuff is for you figure out. Another thing to point out is that the Great Plateau gives you all of the tools you'll need on your adventure up front. Powers are in the form of runes, in which Link will use his Sheikah Slate (basically an iPad) to execute. These runes consist of the power to lift metal objects in a limited space, a power to stop time on singular objects and enemies, a power for conjuring a pillar of frozen water, and even just conventional bombs with the added bonus of being remote controlled (and strike me down if the square bomb isn't the single most greatest item in video game history). This certainly compliments the go anywhere, do anything style Breath of the Wild boasts, as all your options are available to you in the beginning with your own creativity playing front and center for solving puzzles, exploring, and dispatching foes. It'd be good to bring up that no problem in the latest land of Hyrule has one single answer. You are free to go about any challenge however you like, and your results won't be the only way to complete it. An example of this being in a particular puzzle where you must roll a ball through a little maze to where it needs to go. You can use the game's oft iffy motion controls to roll the ball through the maze as intended, jump into the maze yourself and take the ball to its destination, or flip the maze upside down to reveal the smooth surface below that the ball can easily glide to victory with. That is three different solutions to a simple little puzzle and most problems follow suit with that design. Needless to say I find that fascinating. Option for exploration... Your options aren't extended to mere problem solving either. This being an open world game, the world is very open, as well as the way you explore it. After leaving the plateau, you are free to set out into any direction you please, and yes, that includes Hyrule Castle. From the first hour, you can make way to the final boss wielding a stick and a pot lid, wearing no clothes as we all do... Though your chances of succeeding that siege are next to none, as you'll likely be blasted by the first patrolling Guardian you pass. So it is there that the game encourages you to travel the world, and cobble together an improved arsenal and understanding of Breath's narrative. But it's all completely optional. The only two tasks you must complete are getting off the Great Plateau and defeating Ganon, everything else only serves as choice stepping stones to that final path. Of course, the first and foremost thing to look out for are... Shrines... The little ball maze example I gave you earlier can be found in one of Hyrule's many shrines. Weird little puzzle rooms that stick out like a sore thumb in this world. Each shrine has a puzzle for you to solve and a monk to dissolve, which in turn rewards you with a spirit orb. You're going to want these, as they permanently upgrade your health and stamina meter. (And that stamina meter starts out pitiful). Meaning that every time you see a shrine, be it in the open or the reward at the end of a side quest, your going to unceremoniously stop everything to activate it, (which turns it into a nifty fast travel point) and go inside to reap the rewards within. I'll be honest, sometimes these can be more of a bother than a boon. While there is always treasure to be found in them, sometimes it feels like I'm pausing my journey just so I can get some trivial bauble that will eventually be used to upgrade Link. It takes four spirit orbs to get a heart or stamina container, and I'd be lying if I said every single one of these shrines were fun (Those tests of strength can piss right off). Explore to your heart's content... Thankfully, the potential bore of a shrine is remedied by the journey you take to get there. Exploring Hyrule in Breath of the Wild is clearly the main draw. And Hyrule does not disappoint. The world is filled with points of interest and things to do in them. And you will be rewarded for your curiosity. This is by far my favorite part of the game, because I was honestly nervous that this part of the game would be boring. I don't play open world games very often because I'm disappointed when I see sprinkled content and collectables over a barren landscape they call "open" (cough cough Assassin's Creed). But Breath of the Wild eased my nerves by making an explorable world with things to actually explore. Early on in my playthrough I happened upon a beach and noticed a far off island. I sailed to that island and was pleasantly surprised by the events that transpired (killed by them too... a lot.). This stuck with me, as similar experiences would frequently happen as I continued on my adventure. That is to say, an adventure. Never before have I, in my personal experiences played an open world quite like this one. This is a game where exploration is encouraged above all. You can climb any surface, tame a wild horse for faster travel, get directions from townsfolk, signposts, and traveling merchants. The latter is one thing I always love to see, as you can easily explore the world and its many side quests without the need for map makers or dotted lines. Treasures are abound within every nook and cranny of the mountains, forests, river sides, canyons, towns, deserts, ruins, and valleys of Hyrule. And that is one point, if any point, that I want to share today. Breath of the Wild is truly breathtaking as an open world experience, with a genuine adventure to be had. (Well, as genuine a video game adventure can get) But that's only if you can survive it...

There's no denying that Breath is a much more difficult game than previous Zelda games in recent years. Everything in Hyrule will make quick work of poor Link. He must keep warm in extreme cold or cool in extreme heat, or he will die. He must put his metal weapons away during a thunderstorm, or he will die. He shouldn't be climbing a mountain while its raining, or he will fall and probably die (by the way, slippery rain mountains serve no other purpose than to hinder you, and are complete crap). But of course, the biggest threat to Link's mortality are the many ranks of Ganon's malicious minions. These mainly consist of three variants. The mischievous Bokoblins, aggressive Moblins, and crafty Lizalfos, with a few other monster types sprinkled about. The game's high difficulty comes mostly from the creatures strewed about, however, that difficulty is a bit of a farce. In Breath, Ganon's forces hit like a big truck, and take about as much damage you'd expect a big truck to take from a brittle sword. Which is a segway into the infamous weapon durability. Weapons are frail as frail can possibly get. It will only take a couple of skirmishes before your weapon of choice shatters into a million blue sparkles. This is something that many loathe, and many will defend. I personally think that there's enough weapons bursting from the seams to justify them breaking left and right. From the Bokoblin's flimsy clubs, to the mighty swords and spears that pop up everywhere you look, you will not have a shortage of weapons. It's a divided mechanic, and I'd say it's up to your preference if it's garbage or not. The monsters themselves are great. They're expressive while in combat and out. Bokoblins alone will chat with each other at a campfire, and sometimes do a little dance, they'll hunt animals, and fly into a rage when you steal their weapons. In short, they're hilariously charming. If only I could say the same for bosses... Unfortunately, bosses and the dungeons you encounter them in, do not capture that same charm. The four proper dungeons (if you want to call them that) are the disappointing lows of Breath. Gone are the days when dungeons were varied labyrinthine pits of perplexing puzzles, memorable monsters, and... daunting danger... Now they're like shrines... only slightly bigger... and even more boring. To be fair, some of them offer a specialized puzzle solving mechanic that can be accessed anytime from the map, and that is cool. But the experiences overall are lackluster and leave you wanting for more, as you meander about the innards of a big animal robot looking for places to put your iPad. Matters are only made worse when you lock horns with each dungeon's boss. I won't sugar coat it, they're lame, all five of them (the four within the dungeons, plus Ganon himself). They're underwhelming for the most part, and while you can dispatch of them in multiple ways, it does not make for a memorable bout. It also does not help that these five main bosses have, in my opinion, terribly silly designs that clash with the Zelda universe. They're a messy cluster of hair, limbs, and weapons that looks more akin to a failed Resident Evil monster (ESPECIALLY CALAMITY GANON). Kind of sad, really, seeing as how easy or hard, dungeons and their bosses are typically among the best moments of the Zelda series. A sadly hallow legend this time around... Being as big and open as it is, this game has some great gameplay, however, a hit in quality had to be made somewhere, and I'm not just talking about the frame rates. As I've already stated, everything outside of leaping from the plateau and killing Ganon is completely optional. Meaning the narrative had to match its non-sequential and optional playstyle. As a result, the story and main characters aren't the best. I found myself let down as I met the cast of Link's pals, as they are very underdeveloped and one note. Fortunately, minor characters and various NPCs you meet are filled with charm and witty dialogue, and definitely make up for the less interesting main cast. Beedle, Kass, Sidon, Bolson, and every Gerudo guardswoman are only a tiny few of the examples that come to mind. Link himself is an emotionless husk of Boko clubs and mushrooms who stands in his superhero pose with a blank expression as the people around him express their woes and confess their feelings. Link obviously has no need for those, so he ironically contributes nothing to the narrative despite being the main character. He's the polar opposite of the Link in say, Skyward Sword (In fact it's not a stretch to say the entirety of Breath of the Wild is the polar opposite of Skyward Sword). Breath of the Wild tells a story about what happened rather than what's happening, and I feel it suffers in that regard. Small points and Final thoughts... I mentioned the frame rates earlier, it is a problem. It's no secret Nintendo's new console-handheld hybrid isn't exactly a powerhouse (Know nothing of the Wii U version), so some areas of Hyrule will get slight visible slow down. This is seen mostly in fields with tall grass, and a bit heavier in particular forests. Rarely (and I mean extremely rarely) the frame rate will just up and kill itself while fighting Moblins in certain areas, the game freezes altogether if only for a moment. These frame rate drops are few and far between however, and shouldn't put a huge damper on your journey, but when it's there, it's noticeable. Music is great. The minimalistic and melancholic tunes you hear on your adventure is a constant pleasure to the ears. Manaka Kataoka, the lead composer for the Animal Crossing series did a wonderful job for this game (she also dabbled in Spirit Tracks as well, so bonus points for that). The voice acting, which is a first for the main series, is... not as great... The voices aren't terrible, but they aren't too good either. All in all, this game is great. Obviously, how can Zelda do any wrong!? Hyrule is a huge place filled with places to explore and 900 Korok seeds to be found (I found like 80, so good luck). Breath of the Wild offers you an epic adventure that I've always wanted to see from open world games. However, by doing so, I feel it throws out the Zelda formula we've all come to know and, for most, love. And that's not particularly a bad thing in some aspects, but a piece of the heart that makes a Zelda game has been left in a lonely chest. To me, this is a fantastic open world game... But it's no where near my favorite Legend of Zelda game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 8.5/10 - Great game, highly recommended

You may be wondering, "Matt! Too little too late! This game's been out for weeks, why review it now?" And you're not wrong there, it is a little late to be sharing my thoughts on it. But this is my first review, and I wanted it to be a big game that I put a great deal of time in to. That said. What do you think, too long? Too short? Never want to hear my opinion ever again? The feedback will be duly noted. I wonder what game I could review next, til then, I suppose.

CLIMATE 3.URBAN : SHANGHAI

Shanghai is the most populous city proper in the world, with a population of more than 24 million as of 2014. As one of the four direct-controlled municipalities of the People's Republic of China, it is a global financial centre and transport hub, with the world's busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Shanghai sits on the south edge of the mouth of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the eastern Chinese coast. The municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the north, south and west, and is bounded to the east by the East China Sea.

As a major administrative, shipping and trading city, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to trade and recognition of its favourable port location and economic potential. The city was one of five treaty ports forced open to foreign trade following the British victory over China in the First Opium War. The subsequent 1842 Treaty of Nanking and 1844 Treaty of Whampoa allowed the establishment of the Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession. The city then flourished as a center of commerce between China and other parts of the world (predominantly Western countries), and became the primary financial hub of the Asia-Pacific region in the 1930s. However, with the Communist Party takeover of the mainland in 1949, trade was limited to other socialist countries, and the city's global influence declined. In the 1990s, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city.

Shanghai has been described as the "showpiece" of the booming economy of mainland China;renowned for its Lujiazui skyline, and museums and historic buildings, such as those along The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden.

GEOGRAPHY

Shanghai lies on China's east coast roughly equidistant from Beijing and Guangzhou. The Old City and modern downtown Shanghai are now located in the center of an expanding peninsula between the Yangtze River Delta to the north and Hangzhou Bay to the south, formed by the Yangtze's natural deposition and by modern land reclamation projects. The provincial-level Municipality of Shanghai administers both the eastern area of this peninsula and many of its surrounding islands. It is bordered on the north and west by Jiangsu, on the south by Zhejiang, and on the east by the East China Sea. Its northernmost point is on Chongming Island, now the second-largest island in mainland China after its expansion during the 20th century. The municipality does not, however, include an exclave of Jiangsu on northern Chongming or the two islands forming Shanghai's Yangshan Port, which are part of Zhejiang's Shengsi County. This deep-water port was made necessary by the increasing size of container ships but also the silting of the Yangtze, which narrows to less than 20 meters (66 ft) as far out as 45 miles (70 km) from Hengsha.

Downtown Shanghai is bisected by the Huangpu River, a man-made tributary of the Yangtze that was created by order of Lord Chunshen during the Warring States period. The historic center of the city was located on the west bank of the Huangpu (Puxi), near the mouth of Suzhou Creek, connecting it with Lake Tai and the Grand Canal. The central financial district Lujiazui has grown up on the east bank of the Huangpu (Pudong). The destruction of local wetlands occasioned by the creation of Pudong International Airport along the peninsula's eastern shore has been somewhat offset by the protection and expansion of the nearby shoals of Jiuduansha as a nature preserve.

Shanghai's location on an alluvial plain means that the vast majority of its 6,340.5 km2 (2,448.1 sq mi) land area is flat, with an average elevation of 4 m (13 ft). Its sandy soil has required its skyscrapers to be built with deep concrete piles to stop them from sinking into the soft ground of the central area. The few hills such as She Shan lie to the southwest and the highest point is the peak of Dajinshan Island in Hangzhou Bay (103 m or 338 ft). The city has many rivers, canals, streams and lakes and is known for its rich water resources as part of the Lake Tai drainage area.

CLIMATE

Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) and experiences four distinct seasons. Winters are chilly and damp, with northwesterly winds from Siberia can cause nighttime temperatures to drop below freezing, although most years there are only one or two days of snowfall. Summers are hot and humid, with an average of 8.7 days exceeding 35 °C (95 °F) annually; occasional downpours or freak thunderstorms can be expected. The city is also susceptible to typhoons in summer and the beginning of autumn, none of which in recent years has caused considerable damage. The most pleasant seasons are spring, although changeable and often rainy, and autumn, which is generally sunny and dry. The city averages 4.2 °C (39.6 °F) in January and 27.9 °C (82.2 °F) in July, for an annual mean of 16.1 °C (61.0 °F). With monthly percent possible sunshine ranging from 34% in March to 54% in August, the city receives 1,895 hours of bright sunshine annually. Extremes since 1951 have ranged from −10.1 °C (14 °F) on 31 January 1977 (unofficial record of −12.1 °C (10 °F) was set on 19 January 1893) to 39.9 °C (104 °F) on 6 and 8 August 2013. A highest record of 40.8 °C (105 °F) was registered in another station on 7 August 2013.

RELIGION

Due to its cosmopolitan history, Shanghai has a blend of religious heritage as shown by the religious buildings and institutions still scattered around the city. According to a 2012 survey only around 13% of the population of Shanghai belongs to organised religions, the largest groups being Buddhists with 10.4%, followed by Protestants with 1.9%, Catholics with 0.7% and other faiths with 0.1%. Around 87% of the population may be either irreligious or involved in worship of nature deities and ancestors, Confucian churches, Taoism and folk religious sects.

There are folk religious temples such as a Temple of the Chenghuangshen (City God), at the heart of the old city, and a temple dedicated to the Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu. The White Cloud Temple of Shanghai is an important Taoist centre in the city. The Wenmiao (Temple of the God of Culture) is dedicated to Confucius.

Buddhism, in its Chinese varieties, has had a presence in Shanghai since ancient times. The Longhua Temple, the largest temple in Shanghai, and the Jing'an Temple, were first founded in the Three Kingdoms period. Another important temple is the Jade Buddha Temple, which is named after a large statue of Buddha carved out of jade in the temple. In recent decades, dozens of modern temples have been built throughout the city.

Islam came into Shanghai 700 years ago and a mosque was built in 1295 in Songjiang. In 1843, a teachers' college was also set up. The Shanghai Muslim Association is located in the Xiaotaoyuan Mosque in Huangpu.

Shanghai has one of the largest proportions of Catholics in China (2003). Among Catholic churches, St Ignatius Cathedral in Xujiahui is one of the largest, while She Shan Basilica is an active pilgrimage site.

Other forms of Christianity in Shanghai include Eastern Orthodox minorities and, since 1996, registered Christian Protestant churches. During World War II thousands of Jews descended upon Shanghai in an effort to flee Hitler's regime. The Jews lived side-by-side in a designated area called Shanghai Ghetto and formed a vibrant community centered on the Ohel Moishe Synagogue,[89] which is preserved remnant of this portion of Shanghai's complex religious past.

ARCHITECTURE

Shanghai has a rich collection of buildings and structures of various architectural styles. The Bund, located by the bank of the Huangpu River, contains a rich collection of early 20th-century architecture, ranging in style from neoclassical HSBC Building to the art deco Sassoon House. A number of areas in the former foreign concessions are also well-preserved, the most notable ones being the French Concession. Shanghai has one of the world's largest number of Art Deco buildings as a result of the construction boom during the 1920s and 1930s. One of the most famous architects working in Shanghai was László Hudec, a Hungarian-Slovak architect who lived in the city between 1918–1947. Some of his most notable Art Deco buildings include the Park Hotel and the Grand Theater. Other prominent architects who contributed to the Art Deco style are Parker & Palmer, who designed the Peace Hotel, Metropole Hotel, and the Broadway Mansions, and Austrian architect GH Gonda who designed the Capital Theatre. The Bund's first revitalization started in 1986 with a new promenade by the Dutch Architect Paulus Snoeren, the completion was in the mid-1990s.

Shanghai World Financial Center (left) and Jin Mao Tower (right) In recent years, a large number of architecturally distinctive and even eccentric buildings have sprung up throughout Shanghai. Notable examples of contemporary architecture include the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre in the People's Square precinct and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Despite rampant redevelopment, the old city still retains some buildings of a traditional style, such as the Yuyuan Garden, an elaborate traditional garden in the Jiangnan style.

One uniquely Shanghainese cultural element is the shikumen (石库门) residences, which are two- or three-story townhouses, with the front yard protected by a high brick wall. Each residence is connected and arranged in straight alleys, known as a longtang (弄堂), pronounced longdang in Shanghainese. The entrance to each alley is usually surmounted by a stylistic stone arch. The whole resembles terrace houses or townhouses commonly seen in Anglo-American countries, but distinguished by the tall, heavy brick wall in front of each house. The name "shikumen" means "stone storage door", referring to the strong gateway to each house.

The shikumen is a cultural blend of elements found in Western architecture with traditional Lower Yangtze (Jiangnan) Chinese architecture and social behavior. All traditional Chinese dwellings had a courtyard, and the shikumen was no exception. Yet, to compromise with its urban nature, it was much smaller and provided an "interior haven" to the commotions in the streets, allowing for raindrops to fall and vegetation to grow freely within a residence. The courtyard also allowed sunlight and adequate ventilation into the rooms.

Less than Beijing, the city also has some examples of Soviet neoclassical architecture or Stalinist architecture. These buildings were mostly erected during the period from the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 until the Sino-Soviet Split in the late 1960s. During this decade, large numbers of Soviet experts, including architects, poured into China to aid the country in the construction of a communist state. Examples of Soviet neoclassical architecture in Shanghai include what is today the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.

The Pudong district of Shanghai is home to a number of skyscrapers, many of which rank among the tallest in the world. Among the most prominent examples are the Jin Mao Tower and the taller Shanghai World Financial Center, which at 492 metres (1,614 ft) tall is the third tallest skyscraper in mainland China and ranks tenth in the world. The Shanghai Tower, completed in 2015, is the tallest building in China, as well as the second tallest in the world.With a height of 632 metres (2,073 ft), the building has 128 floors and a total floor area of 380,000 square metres (4,100,000 sq ft) above ground. The distinctive Oriental Pearl Tower, at 468 metres (1,535 ft), is located nearby, as is One Lujiazui, standing at 269 metres (883 ft).
