#skam brighton#no thoughts head empty just vibes#also update on how my interview went yesterday!!!!#it went really well!!!! i had a lot of fun talking to everyone there and i am happy with how i did :)#i am very exhausted now however. so so tired.#i did so much social interaction. i did an interview for a documentary that was being filmed there#and talked about being trans and how much i love making trans art about trans joy <3#also i accidentally infodumped about my romeo and juliet musical there#about generational trauma and growing up queer in a warzone where neither side wants you alive you know?#and about physical divides cause emotional divides and how i use punk and folk music to show the rage of the youth#i said all of this to a room of like 15 people. i am fucking crazy but at the end of the day i am free#also a professor at the best university in the country casually mentioned he read some of skambr and it blew my mind#he brought up the al and monica father to son scene!!!!! and he liked it!!!!!#like it's just. it's so weird. like i started writing this show when i was 14 and it was brought up BY SOMEONE ELSE#who i really admire at my first job/internship interview.#we also talked a lot about my transness and how it's connected to my art but also about my art on its own#which was really nice :) i love being recognised as a trans artist but also just an artist who is trans#because i get treated with the same respect as the cis artists there but i also get to talk about being myself without being treated badly#also i introduced myself with he/they pronouns and never got misgendered <3 it was so lovely#genuinely it was just such a fun experience. i love talking to people!!!! i love having fun!!!!!#anyways enjoy the clip besties and have a good day

Ok please if you don’t mind saying - who is Stuart semple and what did he do? I’m so confused. Like I recognise the name and I think he might the an artist or something but I have no idea
He is indeed an artist! He’s a English multidisciplinary fine artist best known for his ongoing beef with English sculptor Anish Kapoor over the 2016 exclusive licensing on the process to make Vantablack colour coating, which meant Kapoor was the only artist allowed to use it. Then Stuart Semple made Pinkest Pink pigment and said it was available to everyone but Anish Kapoor, and there was a big blowup which there’s a lot of documentation of - it was very memed.
Since then, Semple has made a bunch more pigments, most of them with the available-to-everyone-but-Anish-Kapoor disclaimer, and the beef periodically flares up, although I will say as time goes on it seems to me to have got increasingly one-sided given that Kapoor has pretty much wandered off.
(I’ve used several of his colours, btw. Pinkest Pink is pretty good. Blackest Black, his attempt to make the blackest possible paint (as opposed to Vantablack which is a nanofibre coating) I was pretty disappointed in, I’ve honestly had better light capture from mid-range art shop paints. His other pigments vary in quality - some I really liked, some I was meh on, but I think Blackest Black is the only one I was actively unimpressed by)
Anyway. Where I come in is much less exciting. 
A few months ago I reblogged a post on Tumblr asking about Semple from a discourse tag (my reblog did not tag or @ anyone), and I made a glib comment where I said (very truthfully) that while I thought he was pretty decent at pigments, both his paintings and his online persona came across pretty adolescent to me.
so it turns out Stuart Semple is an inveterate name searcher (hi Stuart if you’re reading this!) 
(Side note: I actually should have guessed this from 2019 Twitter when he saw and commented on an untagged thread I wrote about him and Kapoor’s beef (which was because I’d seen an article in which Kapoor, a British-Asian man, said that the racist Prevent strategy was liable to drive young British-Asian men into the arms of terrorist groups by making it clear their country hates them reblogged on Semple’s account with a caption claiming Anish Kapoor was pro-terrorism, which, while tongue-in-cheek, isn’t a neutral statement for a white person to make about an Asian person and was a pretty phenomenally bad-faith reading of Kapoor’s actual words) and in my thread I pretty much said that when the story had broken, I, like everybody else, had found it very funny and been firmly on side with Semple’s bit, but I felt that a) after a couple of years it really wasn’t very relevant any more and it had started to feel less like Fighting The Power and more like bullying the amount of Semple’s web presence was devoted to talking about Anish Kapoor; b) that it was a shame that Anish Kapoor was increasingly only known as The Vantablack Guy given that I really like a lot of his work and c) that continuing to frame a Jewish person of colour as the Face of the Artistic Elite was a bit weird given how overwhelmingly white the high-end art world is. but I digress. Semple responded to that thread, I don’t really remember what he said, it wasn’t an acrimonious response but it was a bit Oh I Didn’t Do Anything To Tag You?)
so anyway he found my reblog and commented saying ehhh I don’t remember, something along the lines of not feeling like I was being very kind and that he was trying his best. also I think he said I had accused him of being racist? which again the actual Tumblr post literally just said I thought his art and persona came across as juvenile and I think in the tags? I mentioned that I thought it was time for him to step off the Kapoor beef. 
then he screencapped my post, including my profile picture and username, and posted it on all his socials with a kind of :( people are so mean on Tumblr :( caption and um
idk if you know this about Being A Public Persona With Tens Of Thousands of Followers but. if you post someone’s identity and say ‘I do not like what this person is doing’ it. can get messy fast.
uh I don’t follow Stuart Semple (see the original post I made) but he commented to make sure I knew he’d posted my post on Instagram and “all my followers like your wig :)” which. according to my partner who did go and look at the time, the Instagram comments were largely about how I was an ugly non-passing trans woman aka “man in a wig” which. throw the whole suitcase out. There were a good few days where I got a lot of angry anons, ranging from ‘stop bullying Stuart Semple!!!!!’ to ‘die in a ditch graphically’ to ‘how can you claim to have opinions on art when You Are On Tumblr’ (I have been a freelance illustrator for 7 years and I have a Masters in art and design) to ‘your art sucks and you’re fat and ugly’ and my personal favourite ‘how can u be cis and use she/her pronouns you dumb snowflake’
(within that furore was a whole branch where someone was like ‘sex worker huh bet you’re bad at it’ and I was like ‘yep! that’s why I don’t do it any more! it’s hard work and it involves a lot of self-promotion and customer skills which I don’t like and am not good at!’ and this was a Whole Thing where they kept trying to insult me (much like today’s anon) about my supposed failures as a Slut Who Is Bad At Sex and I kept going like ‘ok but here’s how that just. doesn’t make sense in reference to what sex work actually is so like, ok?’)
and Stuart Semple and I were also having a conversation which, depending on your perspective I would call his attitude either conciliatory or passive-aggressive, there was a lot of ‘me and my followers would never say rude things about you :) keep up the art kiddo :)’ and being charitable I would say he was trying to be nice while being angry, and to avoid escalating (but with the added context I got later about the wig comment, I think that interpretation of his behaviour maybe. has some cracks?) and ultimately he took down the posts, we had a brief conversation about keeping pet reptiles (apparently he has a lizard) and we left it on, if not good terms, at least peaceable ones. 
however I still periodically get messages about it from angry Semple stans. and I’m not sure the argument was resolved, in that I still very much think it’s fair to make criticism, including quite harsh criticism (which I’m not sure ‘adolescent’ is), on art which is put out for public display and enjoyment, and that it isn’t a personal attack to post a criticism of someone’s public-facing work and statements on social media unless you actively target it towards them (for example, @ ing them), and Semple still thinks there’s no difference between a random blog with under a thousand followers criticising a public figure’s work and a public figure with 100k followers on most platforms criticising that blog (out of context - he clipped out the post I was reblogging from and my explanatory tags, and looking at my blog you may notice that 90% of my nuance is in the tags) while giving his followers all the information to find said blog.
(also as multiple people have remarked. if you want to say it’s an unfair criticism to call your online presence immature, being a middle-aged artist who as far as I can tell has a net worth over a million who spends your time name searching yourself in order to get mad at untagged mild criticism from strangers on the internet and share it on all your socials for your followers to join you in Being Big Mad is uhhhhhhh. it uh. it’s not like. not super thin-skinned and immature)
(also also I just googled his net worth and unsurprisingly I can’t find a source on it I’d consider reliable, but I did find multiple articles about him getting in trouble for breach of contract and nonpayment for gallery employees, including two accusations of him writing a big defensive blog post then changing it after a few hours to a very short post saying I LOVE YOU so like idk how true that is but it does seem. consistent with the above interactions.)

this is like, a super weird idea i've have had in my head for a long time: So, trans Sirius and James are both famous singers (they are together) and Sirius is outed as trans, maybe someone posts and old picture or his dead name, and James is the best boyfriend ever comforting him:) (sorry if i had mistakes, English it's my second lenguage)
((A/N: Warning for forced outing and some mild transphobia- aka people see old pictures of Sirius and assume he’s a woman))
Sirius had made a career out of being a bloke that dressed feminine at times. Technically, he'd made a career out of singing, but more people talked about his outfits, his makeup, and his hair, than his songs. Which was fine by him. He wrote all of his own lyrics, but it's not like he thought they were anything groundbreaking. He'd done three albums so far, and each of them had a single, poetic song that was basically a love letter to James. The rest of the songs on the albums were pop. Maybe pop rock, if the reviewer wanted to be generous. Incidentally, his poetic songs were always the least popular ones, but again, it didn't really bother him. He was a pop artist. He was successful at it in large part because people thought he was gorgeous. It was a nice stroke to his ego, which he always appreciated. 
James had made a career out of actually being a good singer and songwriter, which Sirius thought was hilarious. They were quite a pair. Every time a fan discovered that they were married, they expressed shock at how different their styles were-- usually followed by wondering how the hell they were together; Sirius didn't understand how different musical styles were supposed to make them incompatible life partners, but he thought that was pretty funny too. 
"I don't want to go on tour again," Sirius said with a frown-- not that Benjy could see it. The beauty of phone calls was also the biggest drawback: Benjy couldn't see what Sirius looked like. It meant that he could stay in his pants while talking, but it also meant that Benjy couldn't see his expression and react accordingly. 
"I know you said that, but-" 
"But nothing, Benjy. I've got a husband that I do like seeing every once in a while, and I can start on the next album like you wanted." 
"It's an over exaggeration to say that you starting on the next album is what I want," Benjy, Sirius's manager said. "I offered it as an alternative to going on tour." 
"And I've accepted, so what's the problem?" 
Benjy sighed. "Nothing, I guess. Tell James hullo for me." 
"Will do. And thanks." Sirius knew that he was a pain sometimes, but whenever he was too nice to Benjy, he never ended up getting what he wanted. He once hadn't seen James in person for three consecutive days for a year and a half because he had kept telling Benjy that it wasn't the end of the world if he stayed on the road. 
"Uh-huh. I know it's your time off, but keep in touch, yeah?" 
"Yep. Bye." 
Benjy echoed, "Bye," and they both hung up. 
"Hey sweetheart," James said, putting an arm around Sirius's waist and pressing a lingering kiss to his cheek. 
"You're cuddly," Sirius noted. 
He hummed, not denying it. "Just love you is all." 
"Aw, you love me? How embarrassing." 
"I've always been in love with you, and not once in my life has it embarrassed me." 
Sirius flushed a light pink but pretended like he hadn't. James saw it anyways but kept his mouth shut. There had been times where Sirius didn't like himself in the slightest, but James had always liked him. Every inch. When he had his dysphoric days, James loved him just the same; it helped.

James was plucking tunelessly at his guitar as he frowned at his music notebook, and Sirius was laying on the ground with his feet propped up on the armchair in front of him. Ah yes, the glamorous lifestyle of popular musicians. 
Sirius was having a pretty good time of it. Doing nothing was quite a bit of fun. It was one of the only things he really missed from their school days. Even on his days off, where he purposefully sat around doing nothing, it felt like he had been run ragged. Sirius loved his life, and he liked performing, but a part of him couldn't wait for the day when he got to retire. They'd be able to sit around like this all day, every day. 
It was as he was having that thought that his life decided to take a dip. His phone was sitting on the coffee table, and it buzzed several times in quick succession from new messages. "Can you kick me my phone?" Sirius asked, not wanting to get up to see if it was important. 
James paused playing, then did as Sirius asked and kicked it off the end where it landed near Sirius. 
He picked it up and unlocked it, then frowned. "What's Benjy texting me for?" 
"Well, he's your manager. I'm sure he has lots of reasons." 
Don't panic. 
Well that was comforting. 
I'll take care of it.
People might say some shite, but your #1 defence is to just not look at it. 
Sirius itched to get on twitter and see what he was talking about, but to date, Benjy hadn't given him bad advice. If he said that Sirius didn't want to see it, then it was probably true. Still, he needed to know what the hell he was talking about. 
What's going on?, he texted back. 
Someone found an old photo of you and James at school. 
Oh. Sirius swallowed. If it was from Hogwarts, then Sirius hadn't come out, and he sure as hell hadn't transitioned yet. James was back to plucking at the guitar strings, evidently coming to the conclusion that if Sirius hadn't told him what it was about, then it wasn't important. It's not like Sirius was going to keep it from him, but he wanted to know what was going on, and James would tell him not to bother with it. He'd tell James what was going on-- as soon as he figured it out himself. 
You're gonna get pissed at me for looking, aren't you? 
DON'T. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SIRIUS DO NOOOOOT. 
Sirius read the text and didn't reply. He wasn't going to look at all the comments-- really, he wasn't. He just wanted to know how this had started. 
It wasn't hard to find. 
Some fan of James's was attending Hogwarts and had recognised him in an old photograph. They'd snapped a picture on their phone and uploaded it. Guys, teenaged James Potter!!! I guess that's his girlfriend before he got married :P Sirius had hair down to his shoulders now, but back then, he hadn't cut it once and in the picture, it was in two low pigtails. He'd had to wear the girl's uniform back then, which meant a pleated skirt and a blazer in red instead of trousers and a yellow blazer like the boys had gotten. He'd hated that uniform. He'd gotten more detentions for wearing the wrong uniform than he had anything else, which was sort of amazing considering how often he'd acted out in other ways. 
Someone else had said that the girl in the picture looked an awful lot like James's husband. 
Someone new put that picture side by side with one of Sirius's current ones. Dude, does @siriusblackpotter have a twin sister or smthn?? He has mentioned "family issues" before... 
It went from there to someone unearthing the names listed for the original picture, to someone pointing out that he never took his shirt off for photoshoots, to someone finding both records of him changing his name. That shite was on public record. The only reason he'd gotten away with it up until now was that no one had thought to look for the first one. 
Sirius exited out of twitter and crawled over to James's chair, leaving his phone where he'd been sat before. 
James stopped playing, peering at him curiously. "You alright, love?" 
"Mph." 
"Benjy trying to get you on tour again?" 
"Nah." 
James threaded his fingers through Sirius's hair, scratching lightly at his scalp. "Then what's up?" 
"Someone found an old picture of us in Hogwarts." 
There was the briefest pause in James's hand before he resumed. "All over social media?" 
"Yeah." 
"What did Benjy say? That was Benjy texting you, right?" 
"Yeah. He said he'd come up with a statement or summat, and I should just wait it out." 
"Good advice," James said mildly. 
"You disagree?" Sirius asked, tilting his head back to look at him. 
James gave a small shrug. "I dunno. I'm sure from a PR point of view, that's the smart thing to do." 
"But?" 
"But all I want to do is... I dunno. Something mushy. Let everyone know I love you." 
"Pretty sure they already know that. I think the marriage might've tipped them off." 
"Might've," James agreed with a small smile. With the hand still holding the guitar, he held it off to the side and leaned forward to kiss him. They kept it short since it was an awkward angle, and if James tried to stay that way for very long, he'd probably fall off the chair entirely. It did Sirius a world of good to feel it, brief as it was. Feel him. He leaned back in the chair again, but he kept the guitar away. Evidently, the time for figuring out a new chorus line was done for the moment. 
"I love you," Sirius said. He knew that James knew that. But he liked saying it, and he knew for a fact that James liked hearing it. 
James's eyes lit up like Sirius had given him the world-- just like he did every time Sirius said it. "I love you too. You want to do something fun?" 
"Fun how?" 
"Eh, dealer's choice. We could watch a horror movie and eat ice cream." 
"I hope you realise the only part of horror movies I like is the part where I cuddle up to you." 
"Liar," James said with a grin. "You also like the blood sprays." 
"I just think they're funny is all," Sirius said. 
"Thinking it's funny counts as liking it." 
"Hm, disagree." 
James rolled his eyes. "Does that mean we're on for a horror movie?" 
"Absolutely."

Queer Uber Fund

I used to really care about how I presented, especially in the workplace because I work in both a corporate environment, and in art spaces, people expect you to look a certain way if your gender is a certain way. Sometimes I think people expect me to be more masc, which I find strange in art spaces, I said I was Non-Binary, not that I was masc y’know? People will send me audition callouts for acting with “identifies as trans-masc” on them which is always weird. Honestly I just wear what I feel comfortable in, or for the weather, which is a statement in and of itself. Before I realised I was non-binary it was very performative – I really did dress for other people, or how they perceive me, or how I want them to perceive me. But now I just don’t care, as long as they perceive me as hot.

I’ve always had a feeling about not being straight, but I’ve never had the language for it because I grew up in a very conservative christian church. It was like “gay is bad” but all of the language around it was centred on men, with nothing to say about women being with women, or both. Like… what’s the grey area there? I was raised and socialised as a woman so… was this only a male centric sin? I started to have a language for it at uni, which helped because I found ways to discuss something I’d always felt, but didn’t know how to explain. When I look back at my childhood and how I expressed myself it just… makes sense. I had this favourite shirt, just a really dark shirt with a lion on it, and I’d always wear it with these little pink shoes with pom poms on it, and that aesthetic of really daggy clothes with really nice shoes is really the modern queer aesthetic.
It was mid 2019 when I realised I was non-binary and then I came out in October of that year, but there was such a long process. I was thinking about gender in uni, and then when I was experimenting more with how I presented myself and letting go of a lot of the ways in which I was socialised to behave. Being socialised as a woman was really violent for me – I don’t know how else to describe it – I had a lot of expectations put on me about my body, and how I should act, and how I should be in relationships, and when I was dealing with all of that gender stuff, it was very freeing to no longer have to live up to this arbitrary standard that was forced upon me. It was also much easier for me to talk about it because I was surrounded by so many lovely trans and non-binary friends, but of course talking to my cis friends about it was very… ugh...

I think when I found the language for my sexuality not much changed in the way I presented myself, it wasn’t until I found the language to express my gender as non-binary that there was a change in the way I thought about myself and how I was being perceived my relationship with my body. I really felt it, It was such a different transformation, I was so genuinely happier in my body, and stopped caring about how other people perceived me, and whether or not my presentation made sense to other people. I’ve stopped wearing clothes that are really tight. I don’t know why, but everything I had before coming out about being non-binary was very tight, very fitted, and now everything is very loose and flowy. It isn’t that I don’t like my body, I love my body, but now mostly what I wear is loose and billowy and doesn’t hug me so tightly.
To me the term Queer encompasses a description of my gender and sexuality that isn’t just one thing because its such a broad label. The way it was introduced to me was like a very radical and subversive way to refer to ones gender and sexuality, and I love that it’s been reclaimed by the community as a whole, though I completely understand those parts of the community that are uncomfortable with the term being used at all due to the way it was used in derogatory ways for so long, especially when used by persons outside the community. I’m sure that there’s going to be a generation coming up that will have no negative associations with that word, in the same way that I have younger queer friends that refer to each other using the F slur as a term of endearment, when I wouldn’t use it with most people.

I’ve always had a lot of queer friends, but I don’t think I started going to a lot of queer specific parties until the last three or for years. Queer events too, drag shows, musicians, poets and artists and other queer specific events. It hit a point where I just didn’t want to go to another straight club. They don’t feel safe, and I cannot just sit there and listen to another Ed Sheeran or Drake song when I want to dance y’know? I’m not a huge fan of the fact that queer events always focus around a party or something, I just want a quiet queer event like a queer book club or something. I’m going to join a queer climbing club or something, just be more involved.
I love being around other queer people, but there’s also a lot of racists around. Just because the event is queer does not mean the event is safe. You’d think that we would have dealt with intersectionality by now. Genderqueer people are more aware because we live on the margins of society and have for like… ever. But I find it really frustrating when people create queer events that aren’t accessible – people with different sensory needs, comfortable for people of colour, accessible for people with physical difficulties etc. I remember the first time I went to a queer club event with a quiet room and I lost my mind, like I wanna be at the club for six hours, but I want to sit down and have a break with just a little noise for a while y’know? It was so beautiful and safe.

K: What challenges do you see still facing the queer community today? Gloria: Racism
There are so many things, being trans-non-binary and a POC I get to see it all but like. People within the community that just straight up hate trans people? The phobia is coming from inside the house! Unlearn that shit queers! Some people in the community get rights? Like they can get married, get recognised, and then they turn around and say “us? we’re the good gays” shut the fuck up. Yeah, internalised phobias within the community? We need to unlearn that as a group, that’s a group effort.
Racism, ablism etc, we need to get rid of those because intersectionality is a thing. I also think that there’s so many laws that are trying to literally kill people in the community so like… I don’t know if we need to crowd fund some community lawyers or something, but we need to get some protections from these people who are out here doing their most to keep us down. I also think that cishet people really need to do better, even the ones that say they’re all about allyship will say that they’re on your side and then take you right to a straight club and like hey, what’re we doing here? I think cishet people don’t understand that there are certain spaces that, for non cishet people, are just inherently unsafe y’know? There isn’t any thought as to how their queer friends are safe going somewhere, or how they’re presenting is safe. When cishet people come into spaces that are meant for queer people yeah it’s just a party and a grand old time, but queer people don’t have that same privilege or concept of space y’know? At a straight club I could just disappear because some homophobe clocks me as queer and has a problem and what would y’all do about that? Cishet people walk around like life is this RPG that they’ve unlocked all parts of, and are free to go anywhere, and just don’t realise that there are places that they perceive as totally safe that are completely unsafe for any queer person to be in. We can’t even go to certain countries? We can’t live in certain suburbs of Sydney! People get bashed in fucking Newtown for being gay. Cishet people, especially if you say you’re an ally, or go into our spaces to have fun, why don’t you take a few seconds to think about the safety of your queer friends? Why don’t you pay for our Ubers and shit, make sure we get home? don’t just text me “are you home safe?” be about it!

Best 100 Songs of the decade!
As a new decade will be upon us shortly (the 20’s) I wanted to share some of my favourite tracks from the last 10 years. I’m a pop and rap guy mostly so that’s what you can mostly expect but hopefully a few surprises along the way. I’ll post 100 songs I really loved (in no particular order) then my top 25 absolute favourites at the end. Ok here we go
~Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
To limit myself to just one GaGa track is cruel and not easy, Edge of Glory and Born this Way are both anthems and technically this came out last moment 2009 ..but didn’t pop until 2010. A classic that makes it to most my playlists.
~Airplanes- B.O.B ft Hayley Williams (A classic no need to say more.)
~Love the Way you Lie - Eminem ft Rihanna
A absolutely brutal tune about a toxic relationship full of of lies and abuse, the powerful video really sells the tone of the song.
~Rescue Me - Skepta
Used to love Grime but gone off it for a while now. I wouldn’t call this an outright grime track but Skepta def brings the gritty uk rap scene on this one.
~Forget you ~ Ceeloo Green
Thou I prefer the Gnarls Barkley music style, this is still a awesome tune. Always fun to tell someone to do one in a sing song melody.
~Written in the Stars- Tinie Tempah ft Eric Turner
Used to love me some TT, this was a real catchy banger with great chorus by Eric Turner.
~Raise your glass - Pink (Not much to say, a pop classic)
~I need a Dr - Eminem, ft Dr Dre and Skylar Grey
This is such a underrated song. You have to really know your Dre and Em history to catch everything being said (which I won’t go into here) Brilliant tune and my fave they both worked on together that decade.
~Animal- Neon Trees
Really catchy little number that I enjoyed from first hearing.
~Look at me now - Chris Brown ft Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes
Busta Rhymes rap, that is all!
~Moves like Jagger - Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera
A great sing a long featuring two artists I’m not mad about really so a surprise like from me.

What a tune, completely missed this first time around heard on a tv show recently checked it was this decade and then added it right on the list. Banger.

2 for 1. When Summertime Sadness came out I was mesmerised by Lana’s voice had never heard anything like it before. Safe to say she is my artist of the decade but haven’t raided this count down with all her music. A couple here and a couple of my absolute faves in my ultimate top 25. Love was very heard to keep out of my top 25.
~Stronger (What doesn’t kill you) - Kelly Clarkson
Come on now, if you haven’t belted this one out the top of your lungs at least once I don’t know what you’ve been doing the last ten years.
~Somebody that I used to know - Goyte ft Kimbra
Went thru moments of really liking this song then it really irritating me (played on radio A LOT), thankfully years later the hype has died so I can appreciate it once more.
Midnight City- M83
This is not really my sort of music at all ,so much so I’m not even sure how to describe it. Has a 80’s feel which I love. Just love the infusion of synths and instrumental. Plus the singer has a very calm melodic voice. Great track.
~T.H.E - Will.I.Am ft Mick Jagger and Jennifer Lopez
Absolutely love this song so catchy very Fergie era BEP sounding, with a great guest solo from Mick Jagger.
~212 - Azealia Banks (not much to add on this, banger!)

If you don’t recognise this song from title you will once you hear it, such a forgotten gem.
~Picking up the Pieces - Paloma Faith
Another unique voice that def makes my top ten newly discovered artists this decade is Paloma Faith, her cover of Mama Cass’s Make your own kind of music also deserves a strong mention. Also not related to the music but Paloma is mad as a box of frogs in real life which I love.
~Bangarang- Skrillex
Yeah you’re not leaving alive from this post without a Skrillex nod I’m afraid, not a big dubstep fan but jumped aboard the band wagon when it was big for five minutes, this songs only thing that made it back with me thou.
~Hall of Fame - The Script ft Will.I.Am
First let’s clear this up I’m not a massive Will.I.Am fan or anything, he was just in EVERYTHING for the first few years of the 10’s. It’s a great song regardless.

~Locked out of Heaven- Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars had some amazing tracks his debut album Doo Wops and Hooligans featured some brilliant tunes which sadly I just didn’t have space for in this countdown, Grenade, lazy song , Just the way you are, but I’m showing some love to Unorthodox Jukebox here and it’s best track giving Bruno Mars a edgier new vibe.

~Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft Pharrell Williams
Disco is back! Or is was in 2013 when this tune came out, one of the biggest selling singles worldwide in the 2010’s so not much more detail needed on its inclusion.

Nice little number, always liked this one, never really got into there other stuff but had to give this a shout out.
~Can’t hold us - Macklemore ft Ryan Lewis
The Heist is one of my fave albums from the last decade features some great tracks, same love and Thrift Shop get a shout out but this track was my fave, uplifting and full of energy.
~La La La - Naughty Boy feat Sam Smith
This was Sam Smith’s big feature hit before they became the successful solo artist they are now. Great track very different to the music Sam does now.
~Work Bitch - Britney Spears
Don’t roll your eyes! This is a banger, now get to work bitch!

For Eminem’s big solo feature on this countdown it was between this, The Ringer or Not afraid. You may of guessed I’m a Eminem fan and have tried to keep his entries down but one does not simply do a music countdown and not include Rap God.
~Of the Night - Bastille
Really like this band they have some great hits, Pompeii is another great song of theirs that I didn’t have space to include. I went for this eerie cover version of the Corona 90’s dance classic as my pick.
~Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus (Leave me alone it’s a good song ok 😂)

Was going to obviously include All of me in this spot but then I remembered this absolute hit from Django unchained which sneaks in and takes the spot. Both great songs thou.

Yes I’m a 35 year old Billy Eilish fan ok leave me alone lol. Seriously thou this girl is super talented and she’s up there in my fave artists of the decade. There will be more of her in my top 25 but this haunting track deserves a mention.
~Turn down for What - DJ Snake ft Lil Jon
It’s Lil Jon yelling really load of course it’s a banger. Also worth mentioning Ice T did a awesome Rap rock version of this song and it’s amazing!

Those saxophone’s thou! Groovy little number no explanation needed.

Such a power anthem, I came out as trans in 2014 so this song holds a lot of personal meaning with me but regardless is a great song anyway.

I’m not the biggest Ed Sheeran fan ,take him or most often leave him ,but did like this sweet ballad. Nothing against his voice it’s his songs that don’t often do it for me but this was great.
~Good Kisser- Usher
Never been huge Usher fan ,liked his earlier stuff, confessions and all that. This was a surprise jazzy bluesy type number thou that I really enjoyed.
~Rude- Magic (A catchy sing along tune)
~Zombie - Jamie T
This guy was one of my fave artists of the 00’s, and thou his newest stuff imo doesn’t compare to his older this was still a tune.
~I - Kendrick Lemar
This is actually best when played after the song ‘U’ , the latter being a self hating song ‘loving you Is complicated’ vs I’s ‘I love myself’ different ends of the spectrum I just included ‘I’as you can enjoy that one on its own but to get the best out of that track I highly recommend listening to U first.
~See you again- Wiz Khalifa ft Charlie Puth
A sad song given it’s a tribute to Paul Walker who died in a car accident. Was overplayed a lot at the time but stands strong several years later.
~Dark Times - The Weeked an Ed Sheeran
What a track, their voices mesh perfectly together in this somber number.
~ Trouble - Iggy Azalea ft Jennifer Hudson (Banger)

So many Drake songs I could of included, (he will appear again in the top 25) gods plan, headlines, in my feelings, nice for what, all absolutely great tracks but I had to go for my personal fave out of the bunch.

This may be an odd one to some but I’ve always loved the original by Lesley Gore and this is a amazing cover. Grace has a lovely voice (and there is a non rap version if you’re so inclined) Love a good cover version and this is a awesome cover version.
~Side to Side - Ariana Grande ft Nicki Minaj
Hmm guess I’m a Ariana Grande fan, who knew. A cheeky little number and the first appearance in this countdown of a certain fave rapper of mine.
~Panda - Desiigner (another one where there’s not much I need to add, great tune)
~Dancing on my own - Robyn OR Callum Scott
Take your pick the Robyn original or the Callum Scott cover version, both stand alone great tracks, the original more a melancholy dance track the cover a somber ballad. Both brilliant.
~Alarm - Anne-Marie
A nice little pop tune, really like her voice
~Rockabye- Clean Bandit ft Anne-Marie and Sean Paul
Speaking of Anne-Marie, another great pop track. Super catchy sing along. Sean Paul can be hit or miss for me but works well with this track.
~Human - Rag N Bone Man
This is another one there’s not much I can add this guy’s voice is amazing. Brilliant song particularly love the chains you can hear rattling throughout (reminds me of Johnny Cash’s ‘Ain’t no grave’)
~Black Beatles - Rae Stremmurd ft Gucci Mane
Yep that’s some mumble rap to add to the list (told you my music taste was varied) As a whole I don’t love mumble rap but there’s some stand out tracks including this one.
~Thunder- Imagine Dragons
One of my favourite bands from the last decade, like most there stuff. This song has a great song along chorus. Really catchy track.
~New Rules And IDGAF - Dua Lipa
Honestly couldn’t pick from the two really like them both equally. So you get a double. Catchy pop tracks.
~Sorry not Sorry - Demi Lovato
It was between this or Sober (another great Demi track) but ultimately went with the more upbeat pop number.
~Havana - Camila Cabelllo ft Young Thug (A nice chilled Latino style track.)

A beautiful song by Ed Sheeran,other then ‘sing’ and the previous mentions I’m not really into his stuff but this is lovely track.

Such a catchy tune, the song that introduced me to her music. Great little dance/pop hit. Fun and a bit freaky. Duh!

The way Billy Eilish’s mind works amazes me, how she sees the lyrics, the music and video all as one package. She’s extremely talented and look forward to her taking up most the spots on my 2020’s best of list.

Great rock hit, has a very 80’s feel. Lead singer has a amazing voice.

Maybe my favourite pure manufactured pop hit of the decade, any female pop star could churn this out and it would do well. Hate to love it.

Otherwise known as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones, this guy can hold a tune. Great uplifting track.

Another great Eminem feature hit. Absolute masterpiece of a record.

Nice somber melodic song, this guys super talented.

The South African rap rave group strikes again, this one is pretty much a Yolande solo, the beat is insane and thou half of it is in said/sung in Africans it’s still my fave DA song.

The title of this track doesn’t lie, beast of a track, arguably Nicki Minaj’s best guest verse ever (‘Where them girls at’ deserves a mention for sure) It’s in all my rap playlists, amazing song.

Blurb: Body and Soul. The song. That’s what London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho’s 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body - a sure sign that something about the man’s death wan not at all natural but instead supernatural.
Body and soul - they’re also what Peter will risk as he investigates a pattern of similar deaths in and around Soho. With the help of his superior officer, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, and the assistance of the beautiful jazz aficionado Simone Fitzwilliam, Peter will uncover a deadly magical menace - one that leads right to his own doorstep and to the squandered promise of a young jazz musician: a talented trumpet player named Richard “Lord” Grant - otherwise known as Peter’s dear old dad.
Some Stats: first published in 2011, ISBN: 978-0-345-52459-1, 288 pages in the paperback edition. Fourteen chapters, first-person narrator with limited perspective, written in past tense. Style is standard to colloquial, relatively little dialogue. Took me about four hours to get through, I’d estimate about seven to nine for the average to slow reader.
Synopsis: I’d like to start this synopsis with the disclaimer that the person who wrote the blurb evidently didn’t read the book as almost all information the blurb gives is misleading at best and wildly incorrect at worst. 
The book begins with Constable Peter Grant driving to Brightlingsea, a small town by the coast, to visit his friend Lesley May, who had her face destroyed by a malevolent spirit. On his way back Dr. Walid, a cryptopathologist and friend of his, calls him to examine a dead body for any magical residue. The man, Cyrus Wilkins, was indeed killed by magical means. Peter drives to his home to investigate further and meets Simone, Cyrus’ lover, and is instantly attracted to her. After investigating the rime scene and finding the same magical residue that the body emitted, the jazz classic ‘Body and Soul’ seemingly playing in the backround, he goes to interview the band. After the interview he and the band go out to “find some jazz”. The band want to go to a very exclusive club that they are initially denied access to, but Peter feels the same magical residue from the crime scene and the body again and so uses the name of his father, the legendary almost-famous trumpeter ‘Lord’ Grant, to get in. They discover that they came too late and that a young trombone player is dead. Peter suspects that there are more related cases and starts investigating, but before he can get back home or do anything else he is called by the Murder Team to help with the investigation of the death of a man who had his Penis bitten off by a girl with a toothed vagina and subsequently bled to death. Peter gets Ash, a river god, to help him look for the suspect, a dark haired young woman. The Murder Team finds some magical books in their victim’s flat, and Peter and his superior officer DCI Nightingale begin to suspect that they are dealing with an ethically challenged (formerly referred to as black) magician. They visit the Bodleian Library and Nightingale’s old school in Cambridge to learn how the victim could obtain the books. On their way back they get a call from Ash, who tells them that he has located the woman who killed the man with her vagina. They find Ash impaled on an iron railing. Peter highjacks an ambulance in order to get him to the river to heal his otherwise deadly wounds. A few days  later he meets Simone again and begins a sexual relationship with her. When visiting his father he finds the exact version of ‘Body and Soul’ the dead bodies were playing and, on a hunch, investigates pictures of the last time it was played by this particular artist, which was in 1941. On one of the pictures he recognises a woman he talked to in the club the trombone player died. He formulates the theory that the murderer could have been a ‘jazz vampire’, but before he can investigate further another dickless dead body is discovered. Peter and the Murder Team interview a suspect, who gives them the address of a club. On site, they discover very creepy magical goings-on and call Nightingale, who disarms a demon trap and finds several corpses of human-animal hybrids that were evidently being held as sex slaves. When he returns to the office, Peter finds that the woman with the toothed vagina is in the building and has seemingly murdered a man in custody. He chases her through the city, killing her in self-defence when she is cornered in the end. Lesley, who is helping Peter with the investigation, calls with new information regarding the magical books. Peter then goes to visit Lady Tyburn, who tells him about a group of amateur magicians at Cambridge who called themselves the Little Crocodiles. Peter’s father is playing a gig and Peter invited Simone along, but when Peter’s mother sees her she goes mad and attacks her, claiming that she is an evil witch. She later tells her son that she knows the woman because she tried to seduce his father decades ago, and Peter later gets Simone to confess that she is indeed one of three ‘jazz vampires’. He tells Nightingale about this, who wants to eliminate the vampires, which leads to Peter rushing to save them when he finds out. When he arrives at the girls’ place, he is attacked by a human-tiger hybrid. He manages to fight it off and runs to the roof, where he finds a seemingly faceless magician trying to persuade the women to join him and murder more jazzmen. He fights the magician and manages to chase him off, but must later find that while he was occupied Simone and her sisters have committed suicide. 
Personal Opinion: This series features a lot personal favourites: a diverse cast, magic, seemingly incredibly posh characters who secretly lack any and all chill, murder/mystery, realistic police work (as far as I can tell anyways), folklore, and a main character who is secretly done with everyone’s shit. I had to wait for a relatively long time after finishing Rivers of London, the first book of the series, before I had a chance to read Moon Over Soho, and I had almost forgotten how much I loved these characters and Peter’s sarcastic commentary. I found surprising how well tied together the story was: It doesn’t rely on the first book and the next to the point where it’s impossible to understand if you haven’t read them, like many ‘middle books’ in a series tend to do, but it isn’t written to the point of independency where you can actually read it as a stand-alone. The plot refers to the first book and leaves enough suspense at the end to make you want to (re)read the rest of the series and that makes it, in my opinion, a perfect follow-up to Rivers of London. What I also really love about this series is the vulnerability the two male leads show. Both Peter and Nightingale, though always (at least in Nightingale’s case) maintaining the infamous British ‘stiff upper lip’ are not afraid to admit to the fact that they are not left cold by what happens around and to them. They show grief, fear and sadness, and aren’t written as emotionally cold as many other male leads in popular media. 
Critique: As far as second parts of series go, I have (surprisingly) little critique, but some nonetheless. I felt that the arc of suspense could have been tightened a bit, e.g. by introducing the threat of the faceless man a bit earlier, or putting a bit of emphasis on what makes him scary. I personally thought the introduction of what, as I understand, is going to be the main antagonist of the series a bit anticlimactic. But that might be because, one, I had pretty high expectations because I accidentally spoiled myself via (really good) fanfiction, and, two, I haven’t read further that the second book yet and it could be entirely possible that this was the author’s intention all along in order to build up suspense in the next book(s). There is also on incident in chapter four, where a character who refers to themselves as “only biologically [male]” is referred to as “a guy” and using he/him pronouns by Peter Grant and Ash, and, while it is true that their preferred pronouns are never specified, it would have been nice to see female pronouns being used, especially in this particular series, which is generally very queer positive and features a variety of queer side characters. Disregarding that, I’ve only got the usual: the awkward recap of what happened in the last book that, in my opinion, can really be done without, plus it takes the author some time to really get going and get it on with the story, but that’s typical for book series, and, while annoying, is understandable and can be ignored. 
Would I recommend this book? If yes to whom? If no why? Yes, I would recommend this book for everyone who’s a fan of the series, of Torchwood and/or Doctor Who, or is looking for modern detective stories that are a bit more realistic than anything Sherlock-Holmes-esque, though I would recommend that you read Rivers of London, part one of the Peter Grant series, first if you haven’t already.
