A/N: Nikolai is the most underrated character, and it's my time to shine :)!

Nikolai is a romantic at heart, and an expressive man when it comes down to you. He cherishes you like a precious gem, and often spoils you. In many ways, Nik hates being away from you, clingy to the max. Extremely protective, and domestic in his own way; he’s also unafraid of guilt-tripping you to keep you in his path. 

Meeting him was an interesting experience. There are a few ways of you two crossing paths, but the most sense is he bumped arms with you because of Laswell. 

There are many possibilities of what you could be. Most sense would you being a good SAS soldier, a large figure that he gets along with easily; a dedicated fighter that he soon respects in and out of the battlefield. Not only does it make him easier to search you out- gaining your trust with odd facts, but he can flirt with you on a daily basis. 

Or, like any other scenario, a rare civilian that he gets connected with — sharing the same interests in his culture, famous love for flying, and simply trying to be a better person. 

With this information — it’s ‘safe’ to say that you’ve caught the eyes of Nikolai.

It’s no surprise that he’s a humongous flirt and loves making you flustered. Anybody can see he’s down bad for you, and by the excessive gifting and touching – it’s bound for the two of you to fall in love, eventually. Which, enough said, makes him go through the ‘natural’ route of persuading you; ensuring that you know he’s the right person for you. 

It’s constant touches and clinginess. A hand on your hip to pull you closer, or forced eye contact that’s easily shown to be more than just friends. Nikolai is constantly messaging you– ensuring you got home safe, or asking what you’re doing; soon dialing your phone with his thick accent. And let’s not forget that his laughs are loud, even if you didn’t say anything considerable funny to him, your smile is what makes his day better. 

Eventually — the two of you hit off, going on many dates where he shows himself off. Opting for Russian nicknames over English ones, telling you fun-facts of helicopters or any machinery that flies, which makes him soon reveal his emotions with harsh kisses. 

Within the relationship, everything is perfect; at least how you may see it. He’s comforting, and loving in many ways. Very guarding too, watching everything around you to ensure your safety and happiness is first place. 

He does bad things behind your back. And Nikolai knows it, illegal stuff and what not, but he has to protect you, no? His work is dangerous — other people are dangerous — and you need to be kept safe. If he finds someone harassing you, they’re getting an expensive ER visit; their face barely recognizable with the amount of bruises and broken bones. 

Your relatives giving you a hard time? He comes with you on the next visit, smiling at them when you two get out of the car. When all of you are ready to eat, Nikolai asks rather specific questions. Ones you didn’t know, nor your family knowing how to answer. It’s only a matter of seconds before it shows that he cares for you, seeking information to ensure they know their place. 

Like the post above, he’s done many illegal things. This said, he opts to put trackers on your phone, and shoes that you wear. It’s easy to add or adjust, and to spy on you; looking at his phone if he has a slight gut-feeling of you hiding anything. 

Nikolai is the type to get dirty if it’s the last option. He’s kidnapped before, killed a few, with or without Laswell’s knowledge. 

But he would hate to dispatch, finding the steps of keeping the murder hidden exhausting, so he goes with his favoritism: blackmail. It’s easy to scare them off that way, watching their faces drop with fear as he shows them the documents, is almost a dopamine spike.

However, if anyone dares to threaten or hurt you in any shape or form, and he’s now aware of it? It’s best to bet Nikolai is shoving a gun down their mouth. His thick eyes tell them he isn’t joking around to pull the trigger. That shown, it’s easily expressed that he’s more than just protective. He loves you, more than he can comprehend in words, and he’ll eliminate anything that makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. 

Despite how overprotective and clingy he can be, especially after long-missions, he’d never kidnap you; unless a specific scenario hits. You get hurt, people come for you and force Nikolai to be the bad one. However, with his confidence, he doubts what will happen. 

Acts and service and quality time are his love languages. He loves spending his time with you whenever he can, considering that his job can take him away for many weeks or months at a time. When he’s home — you cannot keep him away. He’s tucked by your side like a puppy following its owner; hands crawling underneath your shirt, squeezing your body, and kissing it a millionth time. 

This includes him helping out whenever, and he loves getting orders from you, doing whatever you asked, or soon yelped, with a cheeky smile. 

That said, it can also be argued that gift-giving is one of his primary love languages, too. Wherever he goes, he makes sure to get you something, dropping them in front of you in many bags — urgently asking you to open them up. Being a pilot has many perks, now, doesn’t it?

When Nikolai isn’t away from work, he’s very domestic. 

The two of you live in a two-story house far away from society, in a remote small town, and an hour away from any major city. He’s caring for the both of you, cooking most dinners, doing the dishes right after, whilst being a cheeky guy and stealing some touches that may or may not lead to make-out scenes. 

His own little thing is that he loves to cook for you. Being a pilot, traveling to many places with different types of food forces him to be out of his comfort zone, so naturally, he’s tried many cooking styles. He’s a professional in the kitchen, and will cook whatever you ask, with a promise of a kiss and a long-lasting cuddle session. 

His kisses are incredibly soft and slow, nudging for more with his nose, breathing out a small sigh. His hands are always on you, either on your hips or back, pulling you into his body for more.

Jikookery in the new Beyond the Story Doc

Don’t expect think pieces/summary posts from me on a regular basis because it’s only when I feel like I have something unique to say. I definitely agree with the majority of the opinions that I’ve read on the doc being sloppy timeline wise and not showing us much else new. This was in my drafts and I forgot about it, so I’m posting it.

But these last couple episodes were gems. And posed something interesting. I had seen the Jikook moments sprinkled on Twitter, but I had to wait to watch the episodes until I got off of work. In the context of the episodes, I think they mean sooo much more than how they can be perceived alone as snippets. Every other member besides Jin (who was with a non idol or celebrity friend group which warmed my heart so much honestly) was featured alone except Jikook. And I doubt all of them are truly alone as in they don’t have a significant other that they could have been seen relaxing with. And I think the answer is quite simple: because Jikook are always together and they have the power of plausible deniability because they are bandmates right?? That means they could never be together according to the court of homophobic public opinion and probably statistical data right??? I know everyone is freaking out about the date on the refrigerator when hunky bf JK cooks dinner at Mimi’s place but I think it’s actually very interesting that they chose that specific date to film them together. And it was the day before White Day too when they were also seen together. *sigh*

Maybe they thought it would be less weird for Jikook to be seen decompressing and hanging out right after a concert versus bringing a film crew in during their actual personal time that would expose them seeing each other outside of “work”. Jikook were very private too leading up to their companion enlistment. As much as JK went live even, we never saw the two of them together except for the minute where JK shows up on Jimin’s Face Documentary which was live, so I lied. I have no doubt that they saw each other all the time even if we didn’t see evidence of it. But that’s the point. They probably wanted to continue having their privacy. We don’t know what the date was when Jin with his friends but I would guess it probably wasn’t the day immediately after their last big concert in Korea. The other members I can’t say for sure but someone could probably analyze their hair or something and determine it was a later date. The point is that Jimin and Jungkook still wanted to be filmed hanging out together for the doc when none of the other members chose to film together. To me, that really speaks volumes to their bond and closeness.

It started, as most things do, with soju. Too much soju, to be specific. 

As if there’s any other kind.

You were bold, but Park Jimin was bolder. He saw you at the bar, gave neither a shit nor a fuck that you were out with your friends, and sidled right up to you as if he belonged there. You balked at his audacity, but it worked. He slipped seamlessly into your life that night. 

And then, when you and your friends parted ways, he slipped his hand into yours. Slipped into your bed, into you, then back out the door like some thief in the night. So it goes, you thought. You went through the motions of your nighttime skincare routine, and went soundly to sleep in a post-soju, post-sex haze.

A few weeks passed by before you saw him again, entirely by chance. As it turned out, the gym you frequented — well, maybe not that frequently — sat centrally between your apartment and his. Neighbors, he mused. No neighbor you’d ever had fucked you like he did, pressing your back to a perforated metal door in a locker room, smelling like salted sweat and orange, sugar-free Gatorade.

“You’re an idiot,” you told him, dead serious. “Blue is the best flavor, hands down.”

He laughed so hard his eyes disappeared. “You’re an idiot. Blue is not a flavor.”

When you went your separate ways that night, he left with your phone number. He claimed it was in case of emergencies, shot you a wink, and disappeared again. Just like the last time, you went back to normal, albeit with the grooves of a locker door imprinted into your back.

It took him three days to text you, and it wasn’t an emergency. Not to you, anyway. To him, it might’ve been; he was trapped, bored, at some friend’s bachelor party and needed an out. Needed you, he said, can I come over? So, he did — all over your tits while you were still gasping for air underneath him.

Life continued like that for months: inconsequentially. You came, he left, and the two of you left it like that. It was nice, having someone to pinch hit whenever a date didn’t pan out, or work was especially stressful. Or it was a Tuesday, or it was raining, or just because.

“It’s symbiotic,” you explained, and he nodded.

With a nonchalant wave of his hand, he offered, “Like a clownfish and an anemone.”

It shouldn’t have surprised you, but it did every time. The person fucking your brains out on a semi-regular basis had brains of his own; and he was funny. He was thoughtful, too, which was something else you failed to account for.

The first time he showed up unannounced on your doorstep, he had a takeaway container in his hand. You were unwashed and entirely unprepared for visitors; and Jimin didn’t seem to notice — if he did, he kept it secret — that you were as much of a mess as your apartment. He simply stepped inside, handed you hotteok from the street cart you wouldn’t shut up about, and then he stayed.

You kept to your respective seats — him on the couch, you sitting cross-legged on the floor by his shins — and neither of you sought to change that fact. It was the latest you’d stayed up since college, and it was the hardest you’d ever laughed. The pair of you got through three movies, back to back, before he left to sleep in his own bed. The squeeze he gave your hand on his way out the door felt more intimate than anything else you’d ever done together.

So slowly that you couldn’t track the motion, Jimin slid into your daylight hours as if he belonged there. You took turns dropping coffee off to the other at your respective offices. You grabbed salads after your joint excursions to the gym as a way of apologizing to your bodies for what you'd just done to them. You called him to complain about your parents; he texted you every morning with your daily horoscope.

And throughout the months you spent like this, soaking into your routine, you didn’t realize that fucking was no longer part of it. It hadn’t been, not since you sat and ate hotteok on your living room floor. Fucking was casual, and this meant far more than that.

Whenever you found yourself in his lap now, it was because you loved to take up more than your fair share of the couch, and his thighs made the perfect pillow. He was comfortable. You were comfortable with him. So much so that your position, combined with the way he played idly with your hair, put you most of the way to sleep.

He must’ve thought you were all the way gone because he whispered, “I love you,” like he was sharing a secret.

It was mumbled through barely-opened lips when you replied, “I know,” just before taking his hand from your hair and brushing a kiss across his knuckles.

Though you didn’t say it out loud, you know he heard it, that he felt it, because — for the first time — he stayed the night.

hello liv! thank you for your service to the fandom, i spend such an inordinate amount of time sifting through all your reclists! i’ve been seeing drarry authors do their first line/last line posts for patterns and was wondering how that might pan out for reccers, so i had a question for you— what are some of the fics you find yourself reccing most often, across lists? do they speak to your own tastes? does a pattern emerge through them about the kind of asks you get? you always rec a really diverse range of fics but i do see some recurring favourites cropping up and was wondering if you had thoughts on it!

Thank you for your kind words and for the ask, anon! This was a very interesting way to adapt that ask game to my blog and I appreciate you for including me 💜 I had to take a minute and think about this because despite knowing that I’ve recced some fics over and over across lists, I’ve never stopped to analyze it in detail. Taking a quick look, I’ve tried to identify some patterns and I think these examples offer interesting insights:

1) I Am Not Who I Became and A Sword Laid Aside - two long fics I mention a lot (often alongside each other) because they combine some very popular tropes: recluse & powerful Harry, competent Draco, forced proximity, fast smut + slow emotional burn, D/s undertones

2) Clear as Mud and Unfinished Business are two personal faves I don’t see in rec lists often, they’re more like old-ish hidden gems and I love getting the chance to sneakily include them!

3) Take the Moon and Life goes not Backward: two favourites written by my friends! Funnily enough, they’re both kid fics which is a trope I don’t really care for lol. Reccing friends is one of my biggest pleasures in fandom, I’ve seen a lot of criticism/questioning around it which makes absolutely no sense to me - appreciating each other’s work and finding things in common is what brings us together in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️

The main reason why I include any fic on a list is because I believe it’s a good fit. I always try to get a sense of what the reader is looking for bc it helps me find the right tone, but it can also get challenging if the request is too vague or too specific. Because I publish lists on demand I try to be as trope agnostic as possible, but at the end of the day I can only rec what I’ve read and enjoyed, so this will always be a subjective process (which I love! Imo rec lists are special and unique exactly because they are personal).

Back to the pattern discussion, I think seeing the same works mentioned on a regular basis reflect not only my own preferences but the ways it matches some emerging trends among the readers who follow me. Now the blog’s been around for a while and I don’t rec as much as I used to, it’s fair to assume that those who stick around have found in my blog similar tastes and fandom approach. In the last couple years I’ve noticed more requests around themes such as powerful Harry, competent Draco, bi and gay awakening, or fics where they take care of each other, bond over shared trauma and redeem or heal together. I think those reading trends are largely influenced by writing trends and vice-versa (especially in the Tumblr bubble!) so in a way we’re all collectively setting those trends and de-constructing or giving new meanings to old perspectives. That’s the true transformative power of fandom! Love that for us 🙌

My feet to follow, and my heart to hold by @daechwitatamic i read this series as it was being posted last year, and i used to wake up so excited on the morning of a new chapter. this namjoon unleashed something in me, and i’ve been left craving love more than i used to. i love the presence of poetry too.

Guarded by @xjoonchildx this series was the first mafia au story i read and fucking loved. i’ve gone back to it so many times. i love the way hoseok’s perception of oc changes as the story progresses. oh so good and satisfying.

i was so excited to share @by-moonflower-deactivated202401 bc their writing is incredible, piercing, and feels so nostalgic, but oh shit 😭😭 just learned they deactivated ☹️

book recs:

i’ve read almost everything by taylor jenkins reid, and i’ll recommend her books forever.

last year i read the book of azrael by amber v nicole and loved it. it’s a dark fantasy romance. i haven’t read the sequel yet.

this year, so far, i’ve read days at the morisaki bookshop. it’s a quick read but very sweet and comforting, with life lessons just beneath the surface. i’ve also read heavenly bodies by imani erriu. it had me screaming and kicking my feet. i posted about it here a few days ago. i’m reading the sequel right now.

dub finding ceremony by alexis pauline gumbs is a book i read my senior year of college, and it inspired a lot of writing for my independent studies prose class. braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer is another beautiful read.

Hi! Welcome to my first day of fandom blogging! I'm very excited about doing this and hope you'll join in on the conversation and really hope that you might start one of your own!!! So on that note, lets get going.

What I'm reading:

I'm currently re-reading The Changeling by @annerbhp. It's a canon rewrite of sort, with a big twist. Here's the summary: Ginny is sorted into Slytherin. It takes her seven years to figure out why. It's 182K from Ginny's POV. It does follow canon to a point. I read this about 6 months ago and I still think about it when writing Drarry. I now have to give Ginny a positive break-up with Harry. LOL No dissing her because she's such a badass in this story. While it's listed as Harry/Ginny, it really is mostly a Ginny story for the main story. There's follow on stories after this one that are fab too.

It starts with Year 1 and the house sorting. Ginny is surprisingly sorted into Slytherin. She at first thinks its a joke done by her twin brothers, but then reality sets in. Most of her family is devastated and she feels completely isolated. This is a Ginny you'll recognize from canon and then so much more. If you longed for more Slytherin background and lore than canon gave us, this you will love. And if you think Slytherin is dominated by the males...well this will give you a headcanon that you won't forget.

What I'm writing:

The Azkaban Letters, which I'm so far behind on I want to cry. It's a 2007 WIP I started right before HPDH came out. So it's canon divergent after HBP. I did edit the first 7 to be more in line with canon and post canon. My issue is I have too much in my head and too many ideas to get down on paper...er on the computer. When I stopped writing it in 2007, I had posted the first 7 chapters on The Hex Files. It came over to AO3 during the transfer and has been staring at me in the face since then. I'm now up to 16 chapters, which sounds like a lot, but there's 4 sections to the story and I'm in the middle of section 2. sigh.

4. @lcdrarry has also posted their reveals! My apologies to the fest and authors/artists. I've only read a few this round but plan on diving into the treasure trove of Drarry. This was a new fest for me to watch when I came back to fandom. While I don't watch many movies or watch tv much anymore, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to follow/understand the stories as well as I should. I was wrong. Most I have found I could enjoy without knowing the source.

I'm guessing most of you follow @drarryspecificrecsdaily, but in case not, you should definitely follow! They post Drarry completed fics which have been posted on AO3 for the current day. I have found some amazing gems from this resource. Fics I haven't seen discussed or recced anywhere else and authors I haven't been blessed reading before.

hey man, nowhere in my post did i call you a horrible person. i said some of your reasoning was transphobic, which is a trap anyone can fall into, because unwittingly repeating unfortunate rhetoric is very much not a moral judgement.

and i wasn't offended by your post, because it's a sentiment i pretty much agree entirely with, just couched in some kind of silly reasoning and a broad misunderstanding of what people are actually complaining about.

most of the folk saying things like this aren't complaining about people using different pronouns for established characters (elfilis, in this case) in their own headcanon. as it was stated in my post, we're frustrated about people straight up misgendering elfilis on a universal basis.

this is an extremely widespread and specific problem with characters whose pronouns are they/them, or god forbid it/its. look at any given character whose pronouns are they/them and you will see countless people in the english-speaking sphere flat-out refusing to gender them correctly. for just a couple examples, look no further than frisk undertale + kris deltarune, the gems from houseki no kuni, and yes, indeed, elfilis. this is such an ingrained and common problem where people just innately reject the possibility of a character using they/them pronouns, let alone the idea that they might be nonbinary in any way, and because of it, you get people constantly misgendering these characters and bending over backwards to justify themselves: "oh, well, you know, this character just doesn't seem like a they/them... it was never stated directly... i'm just more comfortable using he or she..."

it's a longstanding, observable issue. elfilis, predictably, doesn't escape it either, and thus you have rafts of the english-speaking fanbase ignoring this character's proper form of address.

and elfilis' pronouns are in fact canonically they/them and it/its, by the way. this is part of the transphobic reasoning i was referring to: in both real life and regarding fictional characters, it is transphobe standby number one to insist and insist and insist and sealion into infinity that there's ~plausible deniability~ on they/them pronouns. it's used because we haven't met this character! we were never told for certain that this character uses they/them! it's for literary ambiguity! they/them are plural pronouns so it's the text referring to multiple people!

i mean this in the kindest possible way: you are just incorrect here, on multiple points. there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about elfilis' pronouns. multiple times, elfilis is strictly, directly referred to with they/it, where elfilin is referred to with he/him. the game is not being ~vague~ here, it is presenting you with plain information. the game not telling us elfilis' precise, discrete gender identity is not the same as the game not telling us elfilis' pronouns. elfilis is referred to with neutral pronouns in every language except for the ones that literally don't have neutral pronouns.

(even french has a well-known and accepted neuter pronoun these days, but our good friends (derogatory) l'Académie française refuse to ratify it so NoE didn't use it in the localisation.)

additionally, kirby is not referred to with gender-neutral pronouns. i assume you're referring to japanese here, in which case you've been misinformed by a common misconception spread by people who don't speak japanese. kirby is never gendered at all in japanese. it's not "kirby is canonically non-binary in japan!" or "kirby is canonically they/them in japan!", kirby is canonically nothing in japan. they go out of their way to not mention it. depending on your translation standards, japanese doesn't even have "they/them" as a singular pronoun. i explained this in my post here, and there's an additional post i made on the topic regarding a slightly different version of this fandom misconception here.

anyway, tl;dr, no-one is complaining about people giving elfilis different pronouns in headcanons and AUs. we're complaining about the exhaustingly common phenomenon of people forgetting how to be normal about gender when a character uses they/them.

The Emerald Foundation

In Basque sustrai means root, basis, origin. This applies to Emerald's wish to belong and to her being a hidden (rooted) gem, but it can also gain an additional meaning. As a matter of fact her name and surname translated and put together give emerald root > emerald basis > emerald foundation.

So she is literally the Emerald Foundation and what is that if not the Emerald Tablet aka the origin of all alchemy?

@hamliet has already explained in her wonderful meta what this may mean for her and Mercury's arcs. This post will start from what she said and add some other considerations and possible pieces of foreshadowing.

THE TABLET'S AUTHOR AND IMPORTANCE

According to the legend, the Emerald Tablet was written by Hermes Trimegistus, a combination of the Greek god Hermes (so Mercury) and the Egyptian god Thoth. It is supposed to be a hermetic text that reveals the truth about alchemy, hence why it is traditionally considered the foundation of the art.

This short description leads to 2 considerations about Emerald's character:

Her story is intertwined with Mercury's and her Emerald Tablet's symbolism is one of the many motifs that confirm it.

Her role may be to reveal some kind of truth to Mercury/Cinder or both. It would tie perfectly with her semblance, in the sense she goes from illusions and lies to revelations and truths.

WHAT DOES THE EMERALD TABLET SAY?

Here comes a short version of the Tablet (which is what's needed to us):

Truth! Certainty! That in which there is no doubt! That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above, working the miracles of one [thing]. As all things were from One. Its father is the Sun and its mother the Moon. The Earth carried it in her belly, and the Wind nourished it in her belly, as Earth which shall become Fire. Feed the Earth from that which is subtle, with the greatest power. It ascends from the earth to the heaven and becomes ruler over that which is above and that which is below.

As you can see, the Tablet is where the phrase "as above, so below", comes from. This same expression gives the title to one of RWBY's episodes. What interests me, though, is this part:

As all things were from One. Its father is the Sun and its mother the Moon. The Earth carried it in her belly, and the Wind nourished it in her belly, as Earth which shall become Fire.

Doesn't it seem familiar?

Obviously, the Tablet and I'm the One do not use exactly the same words, but they at least share 2 common traits. especially when it comes to Mercury's stanzas:

Both have elemental imagery to describe parental figures

Both texts are hermetic, unclear and understandable only when more context is given (alchemy/Mercury's backstory)

These are easy to see for the Tablet. Sun, Moon, Earth, Wind, Fire are all accompanied by expressions or verbs that suggest parenthood. Similarly, the text is just describing in a figurative way the (believed :P) alchemical process to turn lead into gold and make the philosopher stone. What about Mercury's stanzas, though? Are they really that hermetic or full of meaning? The answer is yes because, as soon as volume 3, they hint at revelations addressed much later in the story (and possibly foreshadow some others).

I'M THE ONE - MERCURY'S HIDDEN STORY

Mercury has 2 stanzas in I'm the One:

I'm the one That was born in a nightmare a murderer's son Got no gun But I gleam like a blade and I'm harder than iron

I'm the one That was ripped from the earth and exposed to the sun Overrun By the hate and the beatings defiled by a father

These lyrics are great because they mix obvious information with hidden pieces of truths.

For example, phrases like "I'm the one that was born in a nightmare, a murderer's son" or "Overrun by the hate and the beatings" are clear as day. Mercury is literally an assassin's child and he himself says this:

Mercury:  I'm sorry you didn't have a mommy that loved you, but I had a father who hated me! He never went easy on me! Every day of training was a beating.

However, then there are parts like "Got no gun, but I gleam like a blade and I'm harder than iron" or "I'm the one that was ripped from the earth and exposed to the sun". What do they mean?

The first one actually foreshadows this:

Mercury: And when I unlocked my Semblance, he stole it with his! 

And this:

Obviously, it is not true that Mercury literally has no gun. His legs have hidden guns, after all. However, in the context of the song the lyric is juxtaposed to Emerald's one:

I'm the one Who rose out of filth and was loved by no-one Delusion I'll steal til your blind and defeat you from inside your mind

I'm the one I'll race with your eyes and you'll never outrun Illusions Will conquer your mind and will make you fulfill my design

She has illusions and delusions, whereas he has no gun. So, she has her semblance, while he has nothing. Still, he gleams like a blade and is harder than iron. This means he has turned a part of himself into iron and into a weapon. He is hinting at his legs.

What about the second one? So far, the story has yet to offer a proper answer. However, I would not be surprised if earth and sun turn out to be allegories for mother and father. Apart from the parallelism with the Tablet, the archetypes of Mother Earth and Father Sun are worldwide known. This may foreshadow Mercury being taken away from his mother and being exposed to his father's abuse.

What's sure is that I'm the One foreshadows big parts of Mercury's background. The meaning of Mercury's first stanza has been fully revealed, but it is possible there are still hidden truths in the second verse. This highlights how hermetic and layered the song's lyrics are despite their limited length. Just like the Emerald Tablet.

However, the Tablet and I'm the One actually "foil" each other when juxtaposed. The Tablet shows a symbolic parenthood, which is nurturing and full of love, while I'm the One uses metaphorical images to convey the harshness of Mercury's abuse. Similarly, RWBY takes some vague ideas about nature and the world from the Tablet, inverts them and applies them to a character's background.

In short, The Tablet is describing the alchemical process and talking about the macrocosm (the world). Mercury instead is addressing his upbringing and referencing the microcosm (the individual). This means that he himself is The One, that in the tablet indicates instead the kosmos. The same goes for Emerald.

They are the One, which means their journeys will lead to self-individualization (becoming themselves and reaching perfection). At the same time, they are also The One together because they can succeed only through each other.

SOLVET AND COAGULA

Dissolve and coagulate. Putrefy and come together. Separate and reunite. This phrase is at the root of alchemy (as you can learn in hamliet's metas on the topic).

It means that transformation, change and refinement can be reached only through a process of destruction and creation. It fits RWBY:

As the old saying went, “You can’t put the moon back together”. At times you had to destroy something to make something even better in its place. When Mama had shattered Neopolitan in front of their burning house, Trivia finally understood that she had been broken all along. Losing her friend was Trivia’s first step toward putting herself back together and embracing her true, best self.

There was only one thing she could do now: Pick up the pieces and use them to make something new.

For characters it is about accepting loss and destruction as a part of life, overcoming it, growing stronger because of it and moving toward creation and reunion. This is mirrored in bonds and relationships as well. RWBY have to separate in volume 4, so that they can develop and come together better and more mature in 5. Bumbleby have to overcome their psychological traumas alone, so that they can be ready for each other. Similarly, Renora accept they must develop as their own people before they can be happy together.

For the murder kids, it is the same. They must go on their respective journeys, face their shortcomings and then reunite as better people. In their case, though, their reunion won't be without any form of conflict or fight. To be more specific, it is probable it may mirror their key scene in volume 6:

This is not because they are gonna be enemies or hurt each other, but simply because "fighting" is for them a form of communication:

Ozpin: If you think about it, fighting and dancing aren't so different. Two partners interlocked, although one wrong move on the ballroom merely leads to a swollen foot.

They are both terrible at expressing their feelings. Emerald may grow a little on this, but Mercury is sure to spiral. What is more, for Mercury specifically, fight might be the only way he has to really open up. This is what happens in volume 6, at least:

At the beginning of the scene he is shown literally fighting air. He is battling an invisible opponent, even if he really does not have to. It is not the first time we see him train randomly in his free time and it is clearly something he interiorized from the time spent with Marcus. It is the convinction he has to be "strong" to be someone:

Mercury: He told me I could have it (his semblance) back when I was strong. So I got strong, but I never got it back! 

Emerald is intead trying to communicate with him, but the moment she tries, she finds him extremely guarded:

Mercury: All my life, my father trained me to be a killer, an assassin like him. And then moments after I killed him, you two showed up looking for someone with my exact skills. Just felt like it was meant to be.

Mercury's answer here is the answer of someone, who does not really want to think about himself or to admit how he feels. However, the moment he provokes her and she attacks him, he finally opens up:

Mercury: I've had to work harder than anyone to get where I am. You may not like it here without Cinder, but I think I'm right where I'm supposed to be!

It is messy and raw, but it is genuine. Mercury has a lot bottled up and he unluckily can't properly express himself if not in a conflictual situation (see also his attempts to help Emerald with Cinder by insulting her). Emerald's role in his arc will probably be to help him reveal how he really feels, so that he himself can mature into his own person. Emerald will be both an agent in Mercury's transformation and his final goal. She is the bond that saves him.

Emerald is Mercury's Foundation. The roothless child, who looks for a place to belong has yet to realize she herself has become someone else'shome. Mercury has been tortured and groomed into refusing the most genuine parts of himself. Despite this, he is still able to show love and care for Emerald. His connection with her represents his true wish and self, juxtaposed to what he was taught to wish for and to be.

THE TRUTH

Clean the linens, sweep the floors Shut your mouth and do your chores Scrub the dishes in the sink No one said that you should think Shine the silver, wash the clothes And when you're finished, darn the socks, draw my bath Fetch my slippers, fill my glass And rub my feet; Hurry up, you're so slow You're no good I hope you know That your life is of no use And the truth is that No one's ever loved you

The Truth is Cinder's song and I am totally expecting it to have some additional parts once Cinder's arc reaches its climax. So far Cinder has done nothing, but to run away from the truth. She has been hiding behind her power and cruelty to avoid facing her childhood trauma. Volume 8 is where she goes the closest to truly face herself, but in the end she chooses to go back to her superficial persona and never gets proper development.

Well, this is going to come back and get her as the story goes on and I think Emerald (and Mercury) will figure into it. The kids are really Cinder's only bonds. She abuses and mistreats them, but she also projects on them in ways she does not with other characters. Cinder is really unable to properly love them, but she still considers them as "hers" in what is a twisted and tragic imitation of love. Because of this, it makes sense they are the one who start her proper growth by giving her the first gift: Knowledge.

It is difficult to pintpoint what this Knowledge will be about. Salem's true plans? Possible, but I am also thinking about a more existential kind of knowledge. Cinder's truth is that no-one's ever loved her. However, Emerald (and Mercury)'s truth is that Cinder never loved them. The truth is that Cinder never got a proper family as she grew up. Still, the truth is also that she had the chance to build a found one with the kids and she discarded it. It is important that she faces both truths. Both sides of herself (victim and abuser). She must face her trauma and pain, but she also must realize her mistakes. This is the only possible way she can start her redemption.

Now, I don't know if both kids will deliver this gift or if Emerald alone will, while Mercury will have another and equally important role in Cinder's arc. What I am sure of is that Emerald is linked to Cinder's truth. As written above, it just ties with her symbolism and themes. What is more, there is this:

Emerald: I knew I sensed some weak minds nearby.

Emerald's semblance might be evolving/have more hidden sides to it. Someone on here suggested it might even evolve into mind reading. I am not sure of it, but I will say one of my favourite headcanons is for the girl who puts lies into people's mind to become able to bring truths and repressed things out for everyone to see. I would like such an evolution for Emerald's semblance and even if it is not her power, I would love if it still played out thematically.

CONCLUSION

This was just a quick post putting together many headcanons about Emerald and Mercury. Not sure about the symbolism obviously, but so far I am rather optimistic about the thematic beats and general directions of their arcs :)

One last thing, sustrai means "root" in Basque, but it is probable the writers used it by mistake to also mean "thief" since for some reason if you google it this and root are the first meanings given. It does not really change much. All in all, Emerald is both a thief and a hidden gem. More than anything, she is looking for her roots and she will most likely find them in Mercury, just like he will in her.

What’s a good way to start talking to you if people are scared to? Does knowing the other mun make writing threads easier or harder? How much anxious internal screaming goes on with you on a regular basis?

ooc — I don't know if any of this is going to make sense because for some reason my brain is still asleep, but here we go:

If people are afraid to talk to me, they could easily just either initiate a conversation by liking or commenting on a post of mine whether it be me gushing about something I'm watching, reading, or playing or a starter/inbox call. That will usually get me coming to your blog or messaging you in tumblr ims. Or if you do better making a post instead of coming to me - which I feel that on a spiritual level XD - then by all means. looks at Gem who straight up just made a post about wanting to like the inbox calls she kept seeing on the dash... But all in all, please don't be afraid to approach me, I promise I don't bite and if I do, that's a good sign that I like you.

I think for me, it all depends. When it comes to shipping and smut, I find it easier if I know at least a little about the other so I can either feel comfortable enough to go to them to be like "hey, this is what I want to do, but I'm not sure if you'd be okay with it" or feel comfortable enough to know that if something happens between our characters and they argue that I can be like "okay, this is in character and my muse is overstepping boundaries, but the mun isn't like that" like as long as I have at least shared a few messages with the other mun and we both have an understanding that hey, if we don't like the way the thread is going, we can talk about it. But I think most of that stems from making friends with my writing partners. I can write without talking to someone out of character, but it's more fun if there's conversation outside of it and there's obviously less worry and confusion there. Even if we don't talk ooc and there's a problem with how my character is or how the thread is going, please don't hesitate to bring it to my attention. If I'm doing something wrong, LET ME KNOW. Educate me or help me to understand how "hey this thing you said or did is not okay and here's why". Don't just move on and ignore it. I don't intentionally hurt people and I feel awful when I do, but I absolutely feel worse when I've been hurting someone and they keep quiet for months without telling me. Like, please talk to me and tell me what I'm doing wrong when you see it.

Ah, anxious internal screaming. My favorite pastime! Honestly, a lot. I would say at least once a day, maybe more. It usually comes with the territory of seeing people on my dash I want to interact with and don't know how to approach. looks at a lot of you. To start, what is this?

With so many polls and brackets going around now, some of the classic ships that formed the basis of wlw shipping have been sadly underrepresented. This bracket is an attempt to fix that! It focuses on both the early ships that shaped and defined fandom, as well as some forgotten gems from over the years. And there are some more recent ships mixed in for a little variety!

There’s no bracket or ships yet, why do you have an FAQ?

Well, mostly to get things written down and ready before things get started. There are still a few things that need to happen before the bracket listing can be posted, and then all the polls have to be made and ready to post. Once all that’s done, the rest of this will make a lot more sense, promise!

Why isn’t my ship included?

Limiting the ships to 64 was incredibly difficult, and the result of multiple discussions across multiple days. We were limited by some early decisions we made, as well as trying to keep the number to 64! So if your ship isn’t included, know it was probably a difficult decision. 

So what ships did you try to include?

The first priority was older ships. Anything from the last 5 years or so had to meet several other criteria to be included. From there the goal was to keep it to one ship per fandom, to get as many fandoms represented as we could. Then, in keeping with the ‘forgotten gems’ theme, the ships were narrowed down within their fandoms. While an attempt was made to make sure every ship involved had at least a fighting chance for round one, priority didn’t necessarily go to the largest ship in a fandom. Second or even third largest ships could find themselves ahead of the big ones, just to shine some light on the ships that get pushed aside more often than others. 

You keep mentioning criteria, what kind of criteria did you use?

Ships in this bracket must be sapphic, for starters. While non-binary identities are so important to see represented on screen and in ships, we didn’t want to risk any chance of non-binary characters being misgendered by being included. So only female identifying characters were included. Second, a priority was put on ships with at least 300 fics on AO3, or similar sized fandom presence. That wasn’t a disqualifier, but it was a good test of whether they’d have a chance against some of the other ships. Third, as tough as it was, we stuck to live action shows and not animated. And last main consideration was that the ship itself didn’t date from the last 5 years. That got bent a few times for a couple ships, but for the most part very recent ships and fandoms were left off this time.

Okay but this ship is a classic/my favorite and it didn’t make the list.

Not every ship could! Going up a bracket size would mean 128 ships, and that would be way too many to do. Some absolutely deserving ships got left out just because of room, and trust me when I say the discussions on which ships to go with were fierce before a final list was settled on. And of course, as with any group project, there was definitely a bit of selection bias that went into the decisions. While trying to keep things fair and include as many fandoms as possible, the ships chosen did come from a limited group of people. Some fandoms probably got left out just because no one in the group watched that show, or remembered it while the list was being made. I forgot one of my own favorite ships until the bracket was already set! So who knows? Maybe there’ll be a season 2 with an entirely different cast and crew.

What’s the schedule for this bracket look like?

In a perfect world, the polls would run for 5 days, Friday to Wednesday, and then have 2 days to get the next bracket ready to go. Since Tumblr is our favorite hellsite, that doesn’t work. So polls will run for 1 week (at least for the first two brackets) and probably still have those two days of down time in between to prepare for the next bracket. Once we get to later brackets, depending on participation that might move to the one day per bracket to make things go a little faster. We’ll have to see when we get there!

Who’s responsible for all the graphics?

Okay so maybe this one isn’t frequently asked, but it should be. @mitski put in a ton of work on making sure all the graphics needed were great, and this whole thing would look nowhere near as nice without her.

i'm still working out the details of how train masters weapons Work fully but basically i do know that you don't choose your weapon, your weapon chooses you lol. i think once you are nearing graduation at the train academy (it'll get a name i swear), you choose your weapon and start to train with it. all train masters have weapons because in doing train master work one of your biggest responsibilities is protecting the train from harm be it from disasters or Outside Threats. the city/trains can be a bit lawless and gang raids and Creature (idk what they are yet) attacks are common lol. the gems on torment glow when he uses it and its pretty special. i just still gotta figure out the whole thing lol. i do know that in Main Character fashion torment is pretty powerful and so many other train masters are surprised that he has it/it chose him.

hee i'm still working out hue and jihan (i'm doing literally every question from that ship ask i rb'd the other day to learn more about them & its been fun :D) so i'm gonna post that soon lol! but have a LARGE RAMBLE under the cut :D

when things were more stable between them god, they were really good. the two of them have been together for almost 20 years LMAO so they know each other extremely well & they're extremely comfortable around each other. comfortable, as in the can share a look over their kids heads and know what to do to fix or calm a situation. comfortable, as in jihan did hue's ties before work every day and hue has no clue how to tie one without him. comfortable, as in they're still so comfortable around each other. that hue finds it so hard to hold this distance between them after the entire divorce because jihan isn't a partner he fell out of love with, and it hurts how much he knows jihan still loves him. whenever he sees the kids or does something that he would do for hue like before but shies off it physically hurts hue because he still loves him too lol. hue is a MESS rn baybee and jihan is no better.

in terms of favorite things to do together, they love cuddling and napping together, but they're both also really competitive lol so a lot of their date nights were doing something game esque. bowling, paintball, quiz nights, "competitive karaoke" (LOL) they love to do things that get adrenaline pumping and are fun and silly. both being mostly nocturnal they also really like stargazing together :)

i haven't finished thinking about vampires/werewolves (and ig other supernatural creatures/witches) in this world yet BUT when i do i'll definitely tag ya!

so basically with the witch resurgence program, witches and real magic (that isn't species specific) had sort of dwindled out of the world several hundred years ago. people kind of accepted it and let bygones be bygones. however 20 years ago, human children suddenly started being born again with magical aptitude and prowess. got babies sneezing and blowing up buildings LMAO which is NOT GREAT. bc humans aren't necessarily equipped to handle this type of magical ability (though some continue to learn, other parents kind of view it as waaaay more than they can handle) so a special adoption agency was formed. wolves and were-creatures tend to take on a LOT of young witches bc pack bonding mentality, however other creatures will take them on as well. it works on both a volunteer & scouting basis which means there are families who do apply to take care of these babies, but other times if there isn't any volunteers or there's more demand than there are volunteers, those in the agency will seek out supernatural families or couples to see if they can foster children for a bit since the govt is still trying to grapple with this whole situation. that's what happened with hue and jihan (though they have formally adopted esther and ozzy). as a recently wed supernatural couple + one being a wolf & one being a vampire (who has known witches with magic in his lifetime) it made them great candidates to raise some witch kiddos if they were willing. hue, coming from a large family was down with it but he wasn't sure about how jihan would feel about starting a family. but jihan wants to do everything with hue, he loves him so dearly. so he was down to raise some kids lol. they were given esther first, who is a particularly powerful baby (and probably good that jihan, a pretty old fuck whos seen magic enough to know some bits and bobs about this) but her bio parents actually ended up having another child a few years later that ALSO had magic - ozzy. instead of separating the two sisters, they thought it'd be better to home them together so that's how they got ozzy. as the girls got older and their magic has become more stable, they started to meet with their bio parents. while they don't really view them as their mom and dad, they are creating a good budding relationship with them :D there's also talks of a magic school being in the works! though that's gonna be wild because... there hasn't been magic for so long so who's gonna teach it ?? lol?? so yeah that's just kind of the gist sorry this was so long;;;

So recently I've been going back through my collection of old (emphasis on old) templates - some of them as old as 2015 or older! - in an effort to actually organize these things, and create and archive for them.

Some of them aren't bad. They just needed a bit of polishing - fixing bad margins or colors - but honestly could still be used today.

Others were just suuuuper cringey and I had to wonder why I designed some of these the day I did. (They got deleted immediately, I'm not saving those lol.)

And a few of them hit right in the sweet spot between "Aw, I can definitely see the vision" and "Oh. I shouldn't show this to people as an example of my work" and I decided to completely revamp them just to see if I could. Like a smaller version of what I'm doing for my skins, but on a per template basis.

Movies I watched this Week # 142 (Year 3/Week 38):

“Wasson?…”

Mark Kermore just resigned from his post as The Observor's film critic after 10 years, and in his last article he listed his top films from 2013 until now. His most favourite? Bait, which he called “the defining British film of the decade”, by new Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin. It is indeed a visually-different, experimental-like masterpiece, shot in splotchy black & white, like a grainy, monochrome Tarkovsky. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. 8/10. I'll watch his recent film 'Enys Men' next (even though I don't usually care for 'British Folk Horror').

🍿 Meantime, my 9th beloved film by British mensch Mike Leigh, another story about the plight of a lower working class family, living in a dystopian Clockwork Orange tenement. Uncomfortable viewing about dreary, miserable lives, mired in poverty and hopelessness during the 1979 "Revolution". With teenager Tim Roth, young Alfred Molina, and psychotic skinhead Gary Oldman. Tragic And heartbreaking. 7/10.

🍿 El Conde, my second by Chilean Pablo Larrain (after 'Spencer'). A black comedy horror metaphor that tried to humanize Augusto Pinochet, by making him a blood-sucking vampire. Like 'Jojo Rabbit', it caused me nothing but distress, especially now on the 50th anniversary of Pinochet cruel coup. It opened with the most unpleasant voiceover, which turned out to be Margaret Thatcher, the other despicable puppet master from that time, here playing the fascist's mother. He went for Magical Realism, but he was no Gabriel García Márquez. 4/10.

The quiet girl, my 3rd or 4th re-watch of this tender, magnificent gem, one of my most cherished films from 2022. An illustration of Care vs. Neglect. My mom told me about this beautiful story she was reading, and which was the basis for this film, and I was delighted to introduce her to this sublime masterpiece, which we watched together. 10/10.

Objector, a very Israeli 2019 documentary about a young woman who refuses to serve in the army, becomes a conscientious objector, and even serves 110 days in a military prison. As an ex-Israeli and as a guy unwilling to join the army in 1970, this affair was specifically very relevant to me. My hatred for the Israeli occupation is immense, and the story told here was desperately tragic and heartbreaking. Unfortunately, as a movie, it wasn’t very good, probably because the director was inexperienced. That most of the characters spoke English among themselves was another big drawback.

I never heard about comic genius ventriloquist Nina Conti (Tom Conti's daughter) until finding her on r/nextfuckinglevel. Watching a bunch of her YouTube clips, this pretty, sexy, hilarious comic is superbly creative. In 2012, she wrote and directed a personal documentary, Her master’s Voice. In it she travels to an odd international ventriloquist convention in Kentucky (Photo Above). But it's mostly a tribute to a man, Ken Campbell, who just died. He's the one who had introduced her to the puppets years ago but he also was her lover, when she was in her twenties, and he was in his sixties. Brilliant. 9/10.

Another re-watch of occasional random 'Mad Men' episode, Signal 30 from S5 E5. That's the one with the dripping faucet in Pete's kitchen, and the visit to the whorehouse, which ends in a fiasco. Co-written by Frank Pierce (who also directed 'Conspiracy'). Another example of the superb ensemble drama, featuring dozens of complex characters. "A thing like that"... 9/10.

Jeff who lives at home, my second film directed by the Duplass Brothers, the "other" writer-director brother-duo. And this too is an "indie" comedy-drama about two brothers at odds with each other. What a different and how much better film it would have been, if indeed The Coens were the ones doing it. 3/10.

2012, a Roland Emmerich's big budget disaster extravaganza from 2009, about the end of the world. CGI science fiction popcorn is usually not my gig, but I stuck out and watched all 158 minutes of it. Who pays to see these kind of mindless garbage movies? 1/10.
