I know this isn't the theme of my blog but as 1.) a genderqueer person, who 2.) has a media studies degree, I want to talk real quick about JK Rowling, the idea of separating art from the artist, and why you literally cannot consume media created by JKR without contributing to real harm against real people.

First let's talk about Death of the Author, because I see a lot of people misusing it online. Death of the Author is a theory from postmodern literary criticism that basically says that an author's intentions and personal beliefs shouldn't impact how readers interpret their work. Basically, this means that the author's own interpretation of the work is just as valid as any reader's interpretation, and vice versa.

Critics who subscribe to Death of the Author believe a work should only be judged by what actually appears in the text, not by what the author later claims it "really meant." So if, for example, an author becomes radicalized after publishing her books and later claims that her racist, pseudo-fascist villains were secretly a metaphor for trans people, Death of the Author would tell you that interpretation is utter bullshit and doesn't magically become canon just because the author said it.

I see a lot of people online equate Death of the Author with the concept of "separating art from the artist," but these are separate concepts. Death of the Author just means that the author's own interpretation of their work isn't any more valid than the audience's. Separating art from artist means we as an audience can appreciate a person's artistic achievements without condoning all of their actions and beliefs. So, for example, I can appreciate that HP Lovecraft revolutionized horror fiction while also acknowledging that he was horrifically racist -- and me condemning his racism doesn't change how influential his work was.

Setting aside that there's a huge debate over whether it's even possible to separate art from artist, the main difference between HP Lovecraft and JKR is that Lovecraft is dead and has in fact been dead for so long that his work is in the public domain. That means no matter how many times I read his work, watch films based on his stories, or talk about his role in the history of modern horror fiction, he doesn't make a penny. Whether I engage with his work or not does not change the fact that Lovecraft is dead and is not getting any money from me.

JKR very much is making money off people engaging with her work, and she's openly using that money to hurt people. (See here, here, here) As long as she's raking in Harry Potter dollars, she is going to keep turning around and funneling them into hate.

I don't want this post to get too long, so here's a quick rundown of some of the defenses I've seen and why they don't work:

"I only watch the movies on streaming services! I've already paid for the subscription, so it doesn't matter what I watch with it." That's not how streaming services work. Streaming services track views to determine what content is worth throwing more money at. This is why "hate watching" makes no sense. Streaming services don't care if you like what you watch. They only care about how many viewers it brings in, and if something gets a lot of watchers, they're going to renew contracts, greenlight sequels and spinoffs, and give more royalties to the creator.

"I only watch the movies when they run on cable." Again, not how this works. Like streaming services, cable networks track views to determine what programs are bringing in the most viewers. The reason these networks run the HP movies so often is because they know people will tune in to watch, which makes them more money. They're going to keep paying for rights to run these movies until they stop bringing in viewers.

"I checked out the books from my library! I thought we were supposed to support our local libraries!" In general, yes, libraries are great, but they also operate on supply and demand. That means if books are consistently checked out and have a long wait list, the library is much more likely to order new copies to meet the demand.

"I grew up on Harry Potter."/"It's my favorite book series."/Other appeals to nostalgia. Thankfully, the HP books genuinely don't actually do anything that hadn't already been done well, if not better, by other authors. If you're craving fictional wizard schools, allow me to recommend Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett and A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Last but not least, I want to remind everyone that JKR also publishes adult fiction under the pen name Robert Galbraith. Don't buy, rent, or borrow Galbraith books either.

Please don't feel pressure to publicly respond to this, but I did want to say that the term zionist entity does freak people out in the west, just so you're aware. I personally fully understand why you guys use that term, but most people in America are very ignorant on the whole subject and even if they side with Palestine they don't want to associate with hate toward Israel because, well, they just don't want to be hateful and they don't understand all the history. But of course it depends who your audience is and who you're you're trying to reach, but I personally don't think Dem/left wing activists like the ones who would respond to your call to call congress will go for that. I think this is a valid viewpoint. I personally subscribed to it when I was younger... I thought that there was no point if no one will listen to me and I should try to cater my words so that they're introduced to the concept of Israel oppressing Palestinians and slowly try to go from there.

At this point, though, I think it's more important to speak the truth to power than to change the way I speak for hopes of crumbs. More than anything, I want to foster an environment where we can publicly call out the wrongs that have been done to Palestinians. I think the biggest impact I'm personally trying to implement using my blog is to use my studies and resources to try and spread information and culture — or at least that's my goal.

At the end of the day, Palestinians call them Zionists because that's what their colonizers say allows them to colonize Palestinian land. Political zionism. For us to censor our words at this point won't be helping the Palestinian cause — which is that of anti-colonialism and liberation.

If people do get turned off or irked, please do reach out! I can provide either anecdotal stories or papers about things if they'd like. I published that last ask so that people can know that you cannot be "pro-palestinian" (which, as a term, is something that I get annoyed with in itself as palestinians are not fighting for only themselves, but for the human rights of all peoples) and not be anti-zionist. I actually think it does more harm than good to obfuscate the language of the Palestinians because it changes the goal posts. I would be wary of people who advocate for Palestinians and criticize their language in the same breath.

So there was a lengthy anonymous comment intended for me on another website that I didn’t get to see and can’t reply to there, but they obviously follow me here, so:

I’m not going to jump to any conclusions about what you believe yourself, but you can’t deny that a mainstream majority of American conservatives are very very angry at one or more groups of people on patently false grounds. I’ve never really run into even one in years now that didn’t think (to at least some degree, in some combination) that some significant swathe of LGBT people are child predators, that foreigners are constantly streaming over the border to do crimes, that doctors are collectively lying about the pandemic, that scientists are collectively lying about the environment, that schoolteachers are brainwashing children into radical racism against white people, that workers are just ungrateful for demanding better pay and benefits, that school shootings are government psyops to undermine the second amendment, that poor people are poor because they’re stupid and lazy, that any bias in our justice system against racial minorities is a CNN hoax, that any bias in our justice system against racial minorities is just what they deserve anyway, or that Jewish people are responsible for all of the above at once. Biden’s disinformation board is a terrible idea for everybody because we cannot trust the government to abide by any objective, consistent definition of what constitutes disinformation and we especially can’t trust them to bend that definition according to what benefits themselves, regardless of party. i think what's so funny about the bi Mike narrative is that you flat out have to ignore canon scenes. "boys only"? doesn't mean anything, only Will's "a day free of girls" means something. Mike and El's severe family coding going back all the way to s1 where they explicitly discuss being cousins and siblings? doesn't mean anything either, that's just there for fun, their romance should be taken completely serious and not be uncomfortable at all. Mike seemingly realizing he doesn't want to be with El/wants to be with Will when she kisses him in s3? coincidence, it's not because he realizes he doesn't like El, it just happens to happen while a girl is kissing him. Mike resorting to a disprovable lie about love at first sight during his monologue instead of stating the real moment he realized he liked her? completely random🤭

if your interpretation of canon is that solid then why are you avoiding certain scenes? and the few people i've seen tackle them always need to go on their tangent of how "it's not like that" or you're "reading too much into it". so obviously El saying she could be Mike's sister doesn't mean anything and is just random filler dialogue, it's not supposed to make you feel any particular way. Mike having a similar girls excluding line to Will is only gaycoding for Will, Mike is just being silly and goofy duh, it's not that serious, and so on

Hey, this isn’t an ask, I just wanted to thank you.

I first came across the word “dissociation” years ago, connected with it a lot and promptly ignored it- only recently (the past few months or maybe it’s been an year- my sense of time isn’t great) did I start delving into it.

Initially I was reading ab depersonalisation and derealisation and really connecting to it and getting super scared but I eventually slowly got myself to accept it and read about it.

But then I watched moon knight/ and in trying to learn more about DID just as a generally mental health-aware person- I started relating to alOt of things in a very painful way.

It was a weird up and down months long journey of being scared/ not wanting to consider it at all/ not even wanting to bring it up to my therapist/ thinking I’m making it up/wondering what the like between “normal” and “dissociative” was etc.

But I’m finally in a place where I think either it’s C-Ptsd/ OSDD (even now I don’t want to fully accept it’s the second one). But a big Big Point of acceptance for me has been blogs and memes and infographics from systems.

Of all the books and myths and confusion around dissociative disorders/ it’s always the sincere experiences that I keep relating to the most/ and the explanations from real systems which resonate with me the most.

And your comics were easily the Biggest turning point for me. Because it was explained in a way that entirely totally intuitively made sense to me.Down to them being different colours and circles and mixing. Your descriptions of introjects and passive influence and blending are what really made it make sense to me and genuinely validated me and made me able to see my personal experiences as a dissociative disorder Without feeling wrong and scared and hate myself.

Instead of new terms and talk of trauma that overwhelmed and alienated me, when I was first dipping my toe in, your comics showed and explained my own daily experience and how I’d been seeing the inside of my head for so long. When I was little I had 6 “imaginary characters” I would play as/ my handwriting has always changed/ I’ve had 6 google accounts for years now for “efficiency”/ diff YT accounts that subscribe to diff channels coz “don’t wanna contaminate the different vibes” and these are just some of the little things that were always a little off or weird but in learning that all those little weird things tied up with my big weird things? And that none of them were weird at all but rather something that could be explained and Shared with a community of people who Also Experienced it and could connect and guide each other?

That feeling of connection, understanding, and clarity- the embracing and empathy and forgiveness I’ve been able to have for myself -is something I am so so ever grateful to you for.

So thank you so much. You made me feel how magical and human it is to share, connect and belong with others. And be seen.

(Side Note- I still use singular pronouns as 1- I still have some internalised stigma to work through and 2- with my OSDD it’s more like I in different fonts rather than “we”)

(but I will say I absolutely identify with your descriptions of more distinct parts and they were what allowed me to go “haha just as like.. a fun experiment what if I tried to imagine what it would look like if I had diff-“ when I tell you my head imMediately sorted itself into different trains of thought/roles/personas/ even sense of physical appearance…they settled into and took that “experiment” so so easily and it was so comfortable that I had to look further into it)

(And as I’ve kept going and been genuinely curious and compassionate I’ve started noticing “memory fuzziness” / introjects of my parents/ realised I have a “little” who I have been severely neglecting/ been able to make my therapy about 70% more effective and finally finally feel seen and understood in these communities)

(I’ve acc been able to be aware of diff parts and encourage them to use words- where before they’d be impulses or emotions or visualisations so I could assume it was just “thinking” - now I just encourage a little bit by thinking “hmm is this a part? What are you trying to tell me? Please use words” and it has absolutely changed my life and made so many things clearer and so so much guilt and self hate has been cleared up)

As of now my therapist and I are unsure if it’s more an IFS kind of thing or C-PTSD or OSDD but whatever it is I want to thank you so So So much for putting this out into the world - reminding me of a story about one boy who saw hundreds of fish beached and started throwing them back in one by one and someone asked “why would you do that? You can’t save all of them it won’t make a difference” and he responds “he made a difference to that one”

I don’t know how much interaction you get on your platform but I just want you to know you really made a difference to this one.

And I am very grateful.

Sorry this has sat unanswered for a bit, I ah...struggle to put words to how much it means to me, not only that my little infographics helped you in such a way, but that you took the time to write so thoughtfully to me. (I did read every word of it, even though I don't have the spoons to reply to individual points.)

For a while I've actually been debating taking down my DID/OSDD Casually Explained posts, because they're by far my most popular posts and tend to draw in people who expect me to be the same sort of "educator" I was 4 years ago when I made them. And I'm simply not. I work full-time now, and the relatively little time I have at home is spent trying to wrangle my own mental health.

I suppose I got wrapped up in thoughts of disappointing people, no longer providing the informative content that most people followed me for, nor the personal content they could find relatable...

All that to say, I forgot how impactful content like that can be for people. I've certainly come across mental health comics or art that clicked things into place for my own experiences, I just didn't think my own creations could have that kind of effect on others (thanks imposter syndrome.)

Truly, thank you for telling me your story. I am so honored and humbled to have a place in your journey. Your words have convinced me to keep my infographics up indefinitely--I suppose we're taking turns tossing each other back into the sea.

Genuinely asking: what would be the point of bringing Penny back? She's not a main character, she's a supporting character. She was important to the story during the Atlas arc...but that's over now. She's served her purpose in the narrative. What could she contribute to the story now; what would she bring to the table that is not already there? I love Penny, truly I do, but sometimes it feels like people want her back just so they can ship her with Ruby. :/

I've already answered questions like this but first of all, if I'm right about Penny and Winter splitting the Maiden powers it keeps both of them as important fighters in the war and potentially sets a precedent for future power sharing because it reduces the chance of the powers being stolen, ensures the Maidens always have an ally, and Maidenhood is just very clearly too big a burden for one person.

Second, splitting Winter and Penny with an Aura transfer machine or similar means could help them figure out a way to split Oscar and Ozpin, saving Oscar from losing himself, as I don't think they're going to have them fully merge.

Third, I'd argue she kind of became a main character during the Atlas arc but even disregarding that, that death as a full ending to an arc is just such a horrendous fumble that I can't believe CRWBY would end it there (if you want to hear more about why I think that doesn't make sense as an ending for Penny feel free to look on my blog, it's there). If they can give Vine, a very unimportant supporting character, a death and conclusion that felt fitting for his character in the SAME EPISODE as Penny, there's absolutely no reason they couldn't do that for Penny, a character much more important to the story than him.

Fourth, I firmly believe the story is setting up the characters to start challenging the rules of the Brothers, including their whole balance of life and death thing, because we've seen at this point that the literal creator of the Brothers doesn't subscribe to that idea of balance and the whole situation with Salem is because they're so wishy-washy on their own rule. Bringing Penny back is a perfect opportunity to be like, "hey, actually fuck these guys, they're objectively stupid, there's really no reason to listen to them".

Fifth, yes, I'll admit, I do ship her with Ruby. But also feel that this relationship is relevant. I do think Penny is being set up to be Ruby's endgame love interest, which in itself is a completely valid role to continue playing within the story.

And finally, Penny on her own still has stories to tell for her own individual arc and can continue to be important in ways that may not be predictable right now because we don't know exactly what future volumes have in store. What we do know is that Penny didn't get to finish her own arc (more about that also in previous posts of mine), the circumstances surrounding her death and power transfer to Winter are suspicious based on things we have seen onscreen, and V9 explicitly paralleled her with themes of rebirth and revival.

If it's a product I haven't heard of, I don't know what to think, but I'm going to assume that it probably has good reviews and/or sales if I find out about it.

If it's a product I already know about and have heard of, I don't know that I would but the thing I would want to see is more convincing evidence that what I had heard about is "what it would actually be like to live with." (See also the concept of Popehat's "one-way to make your blog more useful than the NYT" -- I mean, it would probably work a lot better than the NYT, given that NYT subscribers tend to care a lot about which things are well-reviewed/well-publicized [i.e. the opposite of my preferences], while people who don't read the NYT have different tastes).

I don't know if the reviews are more convincing on these than on a different topic. I get a strong "yes" vibe from the picture above, but it's hard to evaluate the rug itself without spending money. (I'm not sure if I'd be able to find the review to compare it to any other in the store, but "I have to ask my wife to come with me for this comparison" is a valid option [although maybe more so in some stores than others?].)

I see you following me. I see all of you, and I know you are thinking about the lifestyle that I promote. A single partnership bound by love and faith, a bound close knit family and a homey lifestyle relying on God’s bounty to provide. 

I have a high influx of BDSM/Porn Blogs following me, and I don’t condone that kind of blogs following me, as I don’t agree with porn on a visceral level - however, it’s surprising to me how many women, appealing to the male fantasy ‘sex kitten’, and men seeking ‘slutty’ submissive women follow me.

Like genuinely, I don’t promote anything that is agreeable to that kind of lifestyle and I have spoken at length with members of both sides of this community on the ‘why’ the Traditional Lifestyle is so appealing. I can’t say that either side has bad points to make - but when I see the kind of content shared by these blogs I really just feel sorry for you all. It’s by no means condescending for me to say that I feel sorry for you, and where you are at, to want to live the kind of lifestyle you are promoting on your blog... It might seem appealing in the short term? But when I think about it, I don’t think that these lifestyles are sustainable in any way, and its sad that the only way you feel you can get the love you need, is to degrade yourself in one way or another to suit the sexual needs of your partner.

I think there is inherent value in being alone - in feeling your feelings, both good, bad and uncomfortable. Being alone in all senses, but most importantly in your romantic life. If you don’t spend time learning who you are, what YOU want, while not being steeped in the desires and interests of another, you never learn about what makes you happy, nor find the value you have in yourself.

I am by no means a saint. I want to be clear about the fact that my life is very much a rocky story to tell, and one that I have graduated from with time. I can understand those who feel as though becoming a sex object is the only way to feel like you are getting what you deserve. A rotten, deep self loathing that reeks in the pit of your gut and poisons you from the inside out. I can see those who prey on the vulnerable, people looking for purpose who are wounded in many different ways seeking validation and love in the only way they can control.

Its the fact that despite that, I still have people following my content, which I hope is showing a different life. One that is hopeful and different - not just aesthetic to the eye, but to the soul and mind. I hope the content I share inspires you to seek validation and worth outside of your body or own primal urges. I am by no means judging you - as a Christian, someone who believes wholly in Jesus Christ himself. How could I rightfully sit there and judge someone for the way they lived. We are supposed to aspire to live how Jesus lived, right? Last time I checked, he consorted with a lot of people that others considered dregs of society, the broken and downtrodden were the ones he supported the most. If I am a Christian, truly, then I am not going to point my finger and say that you are a person unworthy of recognition nor understanding. I may not agree with your content, the values you have or the morals you stand for, but I respect the fact you are different than me, and your life experiences have lead you where you’ve landed in life - which is not identical to my own.

I just feel like the Trad Community is followed by a lot of BDSM/Porn blogs because we offer a glimpse into the hopeful? I refuse to believe it all has to do with kink and play - particularly as my blog is pretty much devoid of any content that would even hint at that kind of dynamic behind closed doors. I don’t see how a BDSM Blogger is getting anything from my reblogged post of an autumn forest than what I am - the comforting nostalgia of a liminal space.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe its all degenerate. Maybe we’re followed because we have pretty pictures that give a small moment to rehydrate after an hour long goon stream of increasingly graphic gifs. Maybe there are always people who will fetishize Traditionalism - bastardizing the principles presented to suit a sexual narrative... But sex isn’t really that long lasting - and eventually, everything that can be done, will eventually be done, and then what? You cast away your person for someone else, never mind the emotional ties now bound from what you went through in a dynamic, but also as a couple? It all just sounds so messy and unnecessary to me. You don’t have to live like that, honestly.

I’m choosing from now on, to believe that my blog is used as one for hope? It might sound a little uppity and full of myself, but who am I really to negate someone’s right from looking at the content I post? Nothing is explicit, nor worth putting behind a barrier. I’m really sick of seeing these names pop up, but at the same time as people choosing to take my sending asks on Sims blogs I like being reacted to like ‘m doing something racy and scandalous, maybe its one in the same. Maybe this blog is a dirty little secret, because its a fantasy that they desire to have, outside of the life they are projecting with their content. 

Maybe it is them who are the anomaly.

Maybe we have what they want? Who really knows, its all conjecture.

Not judging... So sick of being in the community and pretending that sex doesn’t exist at all. So sick of this stigma hanging over the heads of the aspiring trads to entirely flip themselves under the guise of a narrative that is ages old and entirely new every generation. You can be trad and be unladylike, you can be trad and interested in BDSM with your partner, you can be LGBTQA+ and still be trad. We are projecting these ideals onto ourselves that don’t need to be there. 

Maybe, these porn blogs are just other Trads letting their freak flags fly. Who knows? I am absolutely a different person than the one I want to be online. One who is more patient, more Godly, more agreeable... I know I have hard edges, but I don’t think they can or should be softened by the Traditional Community.

What I’m doing here, is promoting a lifestyle that integrates one partner (a monogamous pair) and leads to having children - as many as God permits. I want to promote motherhood - femininity in its purest form, I want to inspire women to promote their natural beauty and value themselves enough to wait for a partner worth having who values you as much as you deserve. I want to promote a devotion to God, one that is powerful - but personal. Shared when you wish you share and celebrated as you wish to celebrate it.

It seems a little silly to me, really, that the Trad community is so opposed to the concept of sex (even in private polite company) but are dedicated to the ideas of having large families with their spouse. Do NOT @ me about adoption or IVF. We all know the diatribe. WE KNOW. I shouldn’t have to preface it with that. For those natural families to happen, you’re gonna have sex - and being sex positive to some degree, in my opinion, is super important to the success of a marriage. Finding someone who is willing to explore, be a little crazy and keep things fresh is important, sex is a love language for a lot of people. We can’t forget that.

Ugh... This whole rant has given me a headache. Uugh. You porn blogs are too much some times, I can’t. I have to say at this point, I am a sex positive blog. I don’t agree with porn, I am not a fan of you porn bloggers and I would much rather you don’t follow me, because you’re never subtle about what you’re about and yuck guys, honestly... Yuck. Do you still have faith in the fourth meguca movie?

I honestly have a lot of mixed feelings about the idea of the 4th movie, in a lot of different directions.

On one hand, do I have faith the movie will exist? Yes and no, I think the reasons its been put on hold are perfectly valid and frankly if after a decade Anno finally put out 3+1, I think that Orubuchi focusing for a while on other anime isn't necessarily a sign that it'll never come out. They very clearly want this thing to happen and idk as there's some kind of production problems in the way or anything, but honestly it might just be taking a while. I mean, think about how long it took for Mob season 3 to come out after 2, even how long it took after the official production announcement. Maybe they're keeping quiet cause there isn't much to say, or maybe it's still in production hell. I'm generally hopeful tho.

The other part of this is, am I hopeful this movie will be what I want to be? And that kinda gets into a messy spot because I have to ask, what is this movie likely to be about, what do I want it to be about, and do my feelings align with Madoka Magica as a whole? We already know that Walpurgisnacht is in the title and that the big witch made some small appearances in the 4th film announcement, so we can presume it'll be involved in the plot somehow. My concern about this plot point is that I feel like Walpy doesn't need to be in the plot? Like sure, Walpurgisnacht is an interesting and mysterious plot device in the original show, this ominous force that's alluded to multiple times before we see it properly, something so destructive that it took many time loops of layered potential and even Madoka becoming Godlike and succumbing into despair and becoming an even more powerful witch to beat in previous timelines. But I feel like all Walpurgisnacht represents is that, a plot device. We can dig into how it was formed all we want, but Walpurgisnacht is only really a villain as much as a natural disaster in a thriller movie is. I don't think it needs to be personified because Homura and Madoka are the central focus of the character dynamics, especially now that Homura is a demon. Homura may resemble Walpurgisnacht as Homulilly, something very intentional, but I've never really subscribed to the theory that she becomes Walpy because I think the parallel more serves to represent Homura's mindset, which is super practical. Being a magical girl is a duty, not a blessingz so she has a schoolgirl uniform on. Witches are nothing but obstacles, so her concept of a witch is the biggest and most dangerous one she knows of. In many ways her becoming a witch is the first time I think she considers what the monsters she's been fighting really feel, which is a fascinating character shift for her and a neat insight onto what witches are thinking. But although Walpurgisnacht and Homulilly's missions do have parallels, I feel like they're distinct enough to be separated.

We also have to ask, what do I want to see and does it align with what's likely? Personally I think the ideal movie 4 for Madoka is something that takes a lot from the latter half of End of Evangelion, and perhaps 25 and 26 as well. I think there's plenty of reason for there to be extensive sequences of Madoka and Homura talking things out and covering how they feel about each other, why, and what to do next. In a lot of ways I feel like it would be a really cathartic ending to their story, them finally being able to just have a heart to heart after all the things in the plot that have kept them distant. I think another good reference point would be @pinkthread 's old ask blog, something that imo really takes hold of the more melancholic and raw parts of the story I would love to see more of. I have ideas in my head of Madoka and Homura talking in abstract space, maybe represented by old areas in the anime. Madoka has burns and scars from the imagery in Rebellion. Perhaps they duel on a field of white flowers, and blood that's shed turns them into spider lilies. It's the emptiness and melancholy that I want to see from Madoka. Something like a dream. But I don't know if that's what's going to come out of it, or even if it's what should come out of it. Madoka plays with some similar themes to Eva, and even some similar executions, but they're pretty distinct. I don't know if my interpretation is in line with what is or should happen in the 4th film. Maybe it'll be more punchy and full of action, with heavy moments and deaths like in the original. Who knows. I can't help but feel like I'm on to something tonally, though, even if my vision isn't going to be realized.

So to sum things up, I have a lot of mixed feelings but I'm generally cautiously hopeful the movie 4 will be made at least sometime and that it'll deliver on some of the things I'm hoping for.

What do you know or think about the theory Taylor being queer? Personally some of her moves and songs always give me fruity vibe👀

This is gonna be a long answer and my first impulse was to say let’s just… not. But I actually have thoughts. History of this blog and my prior interest in Gaylor notwithstanding, it’s not really a theory. I’m actually growing increasingly uncomfortable by the use of the word theory to describe interpretations of songs - to me what a lot of people call “theories” are in fact subjective (often creative and genuinely interesting) interpretations.

The thing about theories is they are ways of explaining aspects of the world around us (whether on a scientific or social level) and can hypothetically be proven to be correct or in some cases be disproven. Theories in the humanities and social sciences are hard to disprove entirely but also tbh can be (eg trickle down economics is a theory that has been disproven). Interpretations are ways of understanding things subjective to our own knowledge, opinions, and the theories we subscribe to which is what lyric analysis always is. It can never be anything other than an interpretation. That’s why when we analyze texts we can say “I’m using X theory to INTERPRET this work in this way” but we can’t say “this is my theory born of this one work (or this one body of work)”. That doesn’t make sense. This is VERY relevant to queer interpretations of Taylor’s music.

When I was in undergrad, one of our setworks was Jane Eyre. The lecturer - a gay man - used queer theory and a queer lens to interpret it. Now, he made a good case for why it can be interpreted that way but like you know what he didn’t do? He didn’t say “Jane Eyre canon lesbo Charlotte Brontë big ole dyke”. That’s not necessary to do in order to say “here are queer themes we can find in this very rich and layered text but if you’d rather write about it from a traditional feminist perspective or if you’d rather talk about the treatment of Bertha as being from the colonies and thus the subaltern or if you’d like to consider autobiographical elements such as CB’s time in boarding schools and her experiences as a governess then you’re wrong”. All of those are valid interpretations of the text, and many can co-exist, but none are definitive nor are they tbh theories. When we did The Tempest, we did it through a post-colonial/decolonial lens and focused on Caliban as essentially the most sympathetic character/hero of the play but again no one went “Shakespeare anti-racist king” because like it’s the text that can be interpreted that way and whatever Shakespeare meant by it - which tbf and I did my MEd on teaching Shakespeare so I thought a lot about ways to teach him and also what he meant while writing this shit as a result and tbh I don’t think he thought very much like I think he was mostly just vibing and selling tickets - is irrelevant. It’s how one reads it and interprets it that matters.

So if you look at a song like Dorothea for example where you have a relationship between a narrator and the titular character that’s somewhat secretive and disapproved of by Dorothea’s mother, and where the narrator feels they’re the only people who truly understood each other, and feels that Dorothea is running away from her past and you say “I see queer themes in this” - well, so do I. If you look at that same song and make a class interpretation where it’s a commentary on social statuses well, yeah I get that too. Neither of those interpretations reflect on Taylor nor does it matter what Taylor meant because both are valid. Saying “I think Taylor dated a girl called Dorothea in high school” is not an interpretation nor is it a theory it’s just wilding. Saying “Dorothea is about Selena Gomez” is also not an interpretation or a theory, it is once again just wilding and talking to talk.

What I’m saying is queer analysis of Taylor’s lyrics is not weird or wrong because she has a large body of work that can be interpreted in a myriad ways. Now that it’s actively being taught in literature departments, I guarantee eloquent queer interpretations will be put forth in some of those spaces. Taylor’s preoccupations with secrecy, forbidden love, and a deeply feminized perspective absolutely lend themselves to queer interpretation.

NOW that we’ve gone through that side of things - which essentially addressed the “fruity vibes” you have (again justifiably) noted in her songs - let’s deal with what I think about Taylor “being queer”. What I KNOW, because Taylor went to CNN and told them so, is she does not identify as queer. She identifies as straight. She does not feel comfortable, in fact she feels actively uncomfortable, about speculation otherwise. She said this. Case closed. Done. Story’s finished. It’s not a 👀 thing. If a person blatantly says “I don’t like you talking about my sexuality” you stop doing it because sexual identity is a very personal thing. Doesn’t matter why they’re uncomfortable, but it’s not a boundary that’s okay to push past once that has been set. Taylor seemed cool with encouraging speculation for a while there, and then she changed her mind. She is an ally, she supports queer fans, she definitely wouldn’t mind the gay Dorothea thing I outlined above or a gay couple dancing to Lover at their wedding or a gay cover of a song of hers with changed pronouns (or a man singing one with the original he pronouns), but she does not identify as queer and she doesn’t like speculation to the point of going to CNN to say so and y’all just need to stop ✋🏼

I'm a fan of Outlined, the web comic by Chaz Hutton. My favorite comic is the drawing of a December calendar page where the second half is basically a bunch of wiggly lines.

That perfectly captures the feel of the season. Even for those of us working a normal day job schedule, there is a sense of shared down time and camaraderie among those out and about actually doing the things  for that week between Christmas eve and New Years day.

It's truly liminal space and time. It is magical time. It is time disconnected from time - or something like that.

2023 as a whole felt very liminal and transitional. It was a blurry-ish year moving from the extended pandemic dumpster fire years 2020-22 (2016-22 if you live in the U.S.) We'll get back to how 2024 is looking when we do the annual just-for-fun (and wishful thinking) year-ahead Tarot reading next weekend (-ish)

In the meantime, I want to use blurry time to bridge years.

2023 was the first full year of Sage Words Tarot. I want to circle back around and use the blurry time re-introduce it all for the bright, shiny new year on the way.

It was all good, but had become a hodge-podge of names and logos over the years. Then along came the Covid pandemic and changed things even more. After a short interim as TaoCraft Tarot (2018-2023) I've been working as SageWordsTarot.com and writing Sage Sips blog ever since.

TaoCraft lingers in layout names. TaoCraft was drawn from my love of Taoist philosophy. My Tarot work will always be guided by the principles of simplicity, authenticity, and kindness. It was also drawn from my affinity for solitary eclectic witchcraft. The TaoCraft name means a lot to me, but not so much to anyone else who sees it and that's a problem because these Tarot readings aren't about me - they are for YOU and about YOU.

Sage is a pen name, which helps to protect our privacy. Christian nationalism and religious bigotry is a very real thing here in America.  I will do all I can to make this a safe space for everyone, especially for the lgbtquia+ community and those of us who are not Christian.
