i talked about it a little here but like. idk it's mainly just extremely unsurprising to me lol, he's a 44yo man with a long-running interest in tech that started when the internet was an exciting fairly new innovation that promised global connection and accessibility of information, and then got famous and rich at the same time it blew up and became this. and now he's living in la and listens to tech podcasts for fun like. he is Very out of touch and running in completely different social and online circles from us. he's the quintessential "dude into tech who doesn't know a thing about how it operates" lmaooo he literally has a smarthome system. like idk my reaction is disappointment and an eyeroll, i'm not sure it warrants much more than that. obviously he's not a baby he can and should do his own research and i can sure hope he wises up to the environmental impact and moves on, but like...is he a bad person? no he's just cringe as fuck and dumb lmao

this goes beyond ur question but honestly i think it's worth a reminder that everyone in mcr is literally Just Some Guy and while they're clearly socially conscious, none of them are politically progressive in the way most of us probably are - if you expect that from them you're gonna be disappointed and you can find other musicians to be vocal fans of if that's what really matters to you. i love my chem because their music means a lot to me and because i can say with confidence they're genuinely nice and good guys, not because i think they're beacons of activism. acting like they are is a) giving them too much credit and b) doing ourselves a disservice. not to be reductive i do think it's good you care, i do too! i just don't think it's worth being deeply upset or scared over akskdjfjf. they will all disappoint you. recently (like, the past couple of years) i've been seeing ray put on a weird 'unproblematic' pedestal or separated out from the other guys as some kind of long-suffering genius which is uncomfortable for so many reasons lol. but anyway. yeah it's cringe as hell but not like. deeply surprising

literally the villain and the romantic male lead both have the same short term goal at this point regarding deok im and it's like ok so that's not helping me see him in a positive light and root for their romance especially since she clearly doesn't want that at this point so are we just gonna watch her get worn down and give in or forced into it?? the tonal switch between this is romantic they both like each other to he's an entitled asshole who doesn't care about her humanity is so frequent that i have no idea what i'm supposed to be feeling about them at all

when the faux choking scene happened i saw a lot of conflicting opinions on twitter about it but there was no subtlety at all to them so it was hard to agree with anyone fully.......a lot of people were upset that his violent domineering actions were being romanticized which in the context they were not, it was clearly edited and acted as uncomfortable and a bit scary BUT the fact that he's the romantic lead and all other scenes of them surrounding that one are soft and fuzzy does make it seem like it doesn't matter that he's a bit threatening bc oh he was nice later. on the other side were ppl like "how are u gonna be upset that a man in a sageuk drama is acting like this it's historically accurate and cute romcom historicals have degraded ur brain this is reality this is what royals were like" which very true like it's accurate and probably what that guy was really like but everyone i saw say that was either not even watching lol or also swooning at all the romantic scenes so it felt like they just didn't want to face that there's something off bc they're enjoying the romance. like i'm all for this relationship being depicted realistically where he is in love with her but in a way that mirrors his own abusive history and strips her of her agency by eventually forcing her into a position she doesn't really want but i just don't think you can do that AND have romantic bath moments and gentle hugs while the orchestra soars or whatever like is this a touching romance or is a bleak reminder of the way women have suffered thru history like it can be both but the way it's doing it isn't really working for me and is very confusing at this point
