Something I think fiction does sometimes is make sex represent the end goal for relationships so often that if two characters sleep together it causes readers to automatically see them as truly in love / that it would solve all problems for the pair to be together forever, even when that isn't necessarily what the narrative is trying to say / depict otherwise.
I am thinking about this because of Guts and Casca... to me they sleep together initially almost as an act of friendship? A way of experimenting with each other and learning about sex, perhaps of distracting themselves from the person they're both more actually into, and of course also because they do care about each other and maybe are attracted to one another on some level, and want to see what it would be like to try to get even closer together. But I think the story also makes it pretty clear that Guts is more emotionally invested in his relationship with Griffith than with Casca, in what you might call a narratively romantic sense... and Casca is shown sort of seeing the futility of her feelings for Griffith and eventually growing apart from him that way pre-Eclipse, even though she still cares for him the most out of everyone she knows (though I don't think he ever feels nearly the same way about her). So getting with Griffith isn't end game for Casca (and she herself eventually realizes that), but I also don't read Casca as a character for whom getting with Guts is the end game character arc-wise, either. I'm not sure Miura even had a concrete end-game character arc in mind for her, to be honest. I feel as though unfortunately she was written mostly as something to be used between Griffith and Guts rather than to end up having her own fully realized narrative journey in the same way that Guts (and maybe also Griffith) will. I want to see her and Guts as friends and at peace more than I want to see them live happily ever after together as a couple, because I feel like that's actually more how they really feel for one another than anything else. Granted, there's a bit of an interesting ironic twist in the story that happens during the Eclipse, where Griffith (unintentionally?) drives Guts and Casca closer together than I think they might have been otherwise with the trauma that he causes them both (even though I think their relationship is probably something he'd be jealous of and read as more romantic than it actually might be and wish to destroy, simply due to his own insecurities and his own possessive feelings for Guts). But I also didn't really read Guts' reactions in the Eclipse scene as Guts being jealous and possessive over Casca in a sexual / romantic sense - I read it more as him feeling empathy for her pain and desire to protect her from harm / from the darker side of Griffith he maybe knew about a bit better than anybody else. I DO care about Guts and Casca's relationship a lot, and find it one of the most emotionally compelling things in the story. But I don't think shipping them together for a happily ever after is really what I'd want for them, nor something that the narrative was actually trying to work towards / suggest to be the best ending for anybody involved? I don't know if I think shipping Guts and Griffith necessarily is either, particularly because of how irredeemably awful Griffith behaved during the Eclipse... but I DO think the story intentionally hinges more around the Griffguts relationship and their emotional journeys / character developments than it does about any other pair/relationship in the series, and that both of them have intense unresolved feelings for each other that come off much more suggestive and stronger than ones of just simply wanting to be friends. And I think all of these characters are pretty explicitly aware of that themselves even in the story as well.
Haha I don't even know what I'm trying to even say here except to work out some of my own thoughts about the main 3 that I care about, I suppose!

I'm thinking about getting my ears re-pierced, so I'm doing some research on it and I found this really funny thing.
An article from a jewelry store (it's the first thing that pops up when I googled surgical steel alergy, which I am pretty sure I have) says, in the same sentence that nickel allergies (which are typically the cause of bad reactions to iron-based alloys) are very rare and then they say 10% of the population has some form of it. That's not very rare. That's 1 in 10 people. In medication side effects lists, 1 in 10 is considered common.
So, yeah, fucking stupid ass jewelry website trying to sell their stupid ass jewelry by misleading their readers/customers.

14 is way too young to be reading Game of Thrones.
Nah, it's a perfectly fine age to start reading shit like that. My brother isn't a pussy-ass bitch, he can handle some gore and rape in his reading. Plus Game of Thrones actually depicts torture/rape/slavery/incest as a bad thing done by terrible people, so it's way better than the shit I got into at his age, which was literal nazi propaganda in the form of Attack on Titan. At least he might learn something from it, provided he can make sense of all the characters in it well enough to actually finish it

only if you want to obv but bRO YOU GOTTA TELL ME ABOUT LOBOTOMIES ive been wanting to do research, specifically to find out if they did happen mostly to women or not rly, but i immediately trust your expertise no questions asked
THANK YOU ANON FOR ASKING! i'm no expert but from what i remember the lobotomy was popularized around the 1930s-40s by walter freeman, which was a time rife with mental illness (because obviously both world wars, great depression, etc took a Toll on people) even though it was still heavily demonized. once the procedure became more "mainstream" for lack of a better term, a lot of people were also just lobotomized because they were "difficult to handle" according to their family. and surprise surprise gender bias definitely played a role there. i wouldn't say they happened Mostly to women but definitely WAY more women were lobotomized than men! so technically not wrong

So, I just finished watching Staged and I'm having so many mixed feels. One of the weirder impressions I got was it seemed almost like a vehicle to put a wedge between Michael and David. I esp hated the ep where Georgia did all the stuff to the office room (messed with the thermostat, starved them, etc) just to get them to bitch at each other (and then admitted that it was cos "people like to watch that". Er, no. I like banter as much as anyone, but the energy of this series seemed idk...wrong?
Tumblr media
Hi, Anons! These are both completely valid opinions and I very much appreciate you both feeling comfortable enough to write in and share them with me.
Anon #1: I had a lot of mixed feelings watching Staged 3, too. I think the episode you’re specifically referencing is episode 4, and I also thought that much of that seemed really contrived. I get needing to create conflict to have a show, but it seemed like there’s so little natural conflict between Michael and David that Simon had to fabricate something, and it just went sort of beyond the limits of believability. (This was also just confirmed by David in a Times Radio interview that was released today.)
I think that in real life, if Michael and David ever did fight for any reason, Georgia knows the fight would last for about two minutes and then they’d find their way back to each other, without any intervention. The banter between Michael and David that we love so much doesn’t need to be engineered or cajoled, because it just happens naturally. I almost wonder if Simon deliberately went over the top because he knew no one would ever buy Michael and David “breaking up” in episode 6 unless he chose to be heavy-handed about it. Which then contributed to the energy of this series feeling the way it did.
And Anon #2, that ties into what you have said as well. That defensiveness, particularly in the scene with David/Georgia and Michael/AL reading the “reviews” of Staged 3. It was indeed very meta, but rather than that “meta” being the show not taking itself seriously, it seemed to not take the audience seriously. It was the idea that “You don’t get this series because you’re not clever enough” as opposed to, “You don’t get this series because Simon is trying too hard to be clever” (which is what I felt was actually the case).
To me, the funniest/best parts of Staged 3 were the ones farthest from the script. The little moments that weren’t rehearsed, and that let Michael and David be something more closely approximating themselves. It could be that some of the characters were dependent on the meta-ness to be relevant/have something to do with the plot, but not Michael and David. They have and always will work best just being who they are, together.
I also noticed some really interesting choices in terms of the dynamics this series chose to play up, and which parts of the characters were exaggerated/highlighted. I think the self-awareness tended to be apparent where it possibly wasn’t meant to be (as opposed to the scenes that were, and tried too hard to be). The place we got to at the end of episode 6 was ultimately where things got much better/how things should’ve been all along, but the process of getting there just seemed very circuitous and unnecessary.
Much of this is things I intend to cover in my analysis/review, so I don’t want to add too much more here. But I love that we are having these robust discussions and I very much enjoyed reading your thoughts, Anons. Thanks for writing in! x

Finally got around to watching this video that had been in my recommendations for a while and it's great.
Basically after string theory starts getting attention from the public some big name String Theorists like Brian Greene and Michio Kaku start getting pop-sci book deals and going on documentaries and making a lot of money. Obviously, given their new financial incentives, these people present string theory as the next revolution in Physics. At the same time this was going on, actual physicists had largely stopped taking string theory seriously on account of it not making any experimentally verifiable predictions (the wiki page for the history of string theory ends in 2003). Eventually the public catches on to this and instead of learning what separates good science from bad science (creating models that explain all previous observations and make predictions about new ones) they start to view all of theoretical physics as this land of crackpots where you can predict whatever you want. Even highly successful theories like relativity, quantum mechanics, and the standard model start to be viewed like this. Theories that DID make new predictions that WHERE later observed.
Obviously there are people who became interested in theoretical physics because of these documentaries and books, and I think that's good! I was one of them! But when your theory hasn't made any progress for nearly a decade and you are talking about it like it's the next relativity and you the next Einstein, that is a massive abdication of your professional responsibility as both a scientist and a science communicator.
This has become a problem in particle physics too and I think it's no coincidence it started when they tried applying ideas from string theory to the standard model (super symmetry). SUSY at least makes predictions about new particles we should find but when everytime those particles arent observed you modify the theory so their masses are conveniently outside the range of current experiments, that's bad science. People are eventually going to catch on and stop giving funding to experiments that are actually trying to answer unsolved questions in the field and not chasing the rabbit of having one theory that can explain all of physics. A theory there is no reason to believe exists other than the fact effective field theories aren't philosophically pure enough.
(sidebar: From my understanding the foundational work behind string theory has gone on to be genuinely useful in some fields mathematics, which is why formulating these theories is useful even if from a physics perspective the final result isn't. But when you are presenting your PHYSICS theory as a PHYSICAL explication of the world to an audience that doesn't have the expertise to contextualize what you are talking about, maybe mention "by the way this theory has never made any testable predictions and was basically dead in the water by the start of the new millennium)
(second sidebar: This persons YouTube channel is great. She's probably my new favorite science youtuber. The fact that she delivered this whole rant while playing binding of Isaac to keep herself too distracted to even attempt to explain how string theory works is hilarious)

You're tags on the post I made about Venti's apsotle voiceline was not only completely true but a brilliant addition, never be sorry for adding tag thoughts - it's my favourite thing!
I'm bad at playing the lyre in game so the only song Venti can do is the first few lines of rickroll, so I completely agree with only giving him meme songs. He would become unstoppably powerful but, hear me out...it would be funny...
Except Titanic, you KNOW you'd give it to him giggling thinking of the kazoo version and then end up on the floor SOBBING when he plays it even more beautifully than the original. He'd be very confused and you'd be huffy and embarrassed - terrible time for everyone.
hi thaims! i'm glad you liked my tag rambles and that you didn't mind either hehe
i'm also.... pretty bad at using the lyre in game, though i did try to learn at the start 😭
it's tricky writing down the notes, remembering which one referred to which and tapping them fast enough to stay on the rhythm so i gave up lol
even meme songs were tough TT
when i read rambled on your post, i imagined personally bringing him the sheets, maybe you happened to bring some when you get isekai'd or maybe you have some weird funky magical access to the internet or something and look up sheet music?
eitherway he would be such a powerful menace with all of this newfound knowledge that he can use to make you laugh whenever he wants to (all the time. he always wants to see you smile, and maybe wants to rub it in a little to others that he knows exactly how to make you laugh so easily)
but oh, imagine if my heart will go on is the first serious song you give him. everything else is just like, short stuff, maybe like. idk wii music or something taken from an old funny video you like
so he thinks of this as a more serious tune you'd like him to play, so he doesn't make it silly and actually performs it as the bittersweet song that it actually is
and he's only ever seen you laugh when you give him sheets to play, so he panics the moment he hears you sniffling and almost drops his lyre rushing to wipe away your tears
if you tell him that he just played it so beautifully that you cried over it—when you were expecting the opposite—he might tease and giggle, probably strokes his ego a liiittle bit, but he does apologize for that in the form of playing you your fave funny meme ones
whatever happens though, this just becomes a new way to bond with you! it makes him happy to share his love and talent for music with someone he cares for too :D
