Plot Bunny: Wen Qing Reincarnates
Wen Qing reincarnates into the Nie sect almost immediately after dying. She grows up Nie Lian and has a great aptitude for medicine that surprises her family. As soon as she starts learning to use a saber, she realizes the problem the resentful energy will cause. She has an intuitive knowledge of resentment she cannot explain. She does experiments that help her immediate family, but her activities do not draw much other attention. Nie Huaisang is aware of her talents, but he is also very distracted with revenge/justice and feigned incompetence. He supports her by not opposing her.
Then, when Wei Wuxian returns to the world, Nie Lian wakes up with the memories of Wen Qing. She is only 16 years old, but she is now both Lian and Qing. She's less guarded than before given how much support and protection she'd enjoyed as Lian, but she also gets a bit sharper and less patient as the memories settle in.
At first she does nothing. Then everything at the temple happens. Then she learns Wei Wuxian is alive again and her brother still lives. Then she learns the Golden Core Transfer is no longer secret.
She requests permission to visit Yunmeng and Gusu under the guise of expanding her medical knowledge. In reality, she wants to see Jiang Cheng for herself and find some way to apologize now that he knows the truth. Then she wants to hug her brother and hit Wei Wuxian for wasting her and the rest of the remnants' sacrifice.
She introduces herself as Nie Qinglian. She refuses to deny either part of who she is. While she is in Yunmeng, Jiang Cheng is injured. His usual doctor is absent (doing rounds along the pier probably) so Qinglian steps forward and takes command of the situation. She helps him. Then, when she thinks he is asleep, she talks to him. She apologizes for the Core Transfer and for keeping Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds for so long. Then she says she wishes she had kept the comb.
The problem is, Jiang Cheng had been asleep, but her voice coaxed him awake. Given how confusing her words were, he'd continued to feign sleep. When she mentions the comb, though, his eyes fly open.
"Wen Qing?"
And this 17 year old Nie disciple stares at him, her face slowly turning pink. "You were supposed to be asleep."
"Who are you?" he demands.
"Apparently I've reincarnated," she tells him. "I regained my memories last year. From what I understand, it happened around when your brother returned."
Jiang Cheng snorts. "Of course this is his fault."
"Would you like me to leave?" she asks, dryly.
"No," he says, sitting up too quickly and wincing for the effort.
"Lay back down. I didn't spend the past five hours saving your life only for you to undo all my hard work."
He lays back, but reaches out to catch her hand. "I'm glad you're here."
"I am sorry," she says. "I don't know if you heard that part."
"You can make it up to me."
"How?" she asks.
"Stay," he says with a yawn. "All I've ever wanted is for people to stay."
"All right," she says.
When he awake again, Jiang Cheng realizes that Wen Qing or Qinglian as she is now, will want to see Wen Ning. And Wei Wuxian. And that Lan kid they're pretending isn't actually a Wen.
He calls for some paper and writes his brother a letter.
A few days later, instead of a reply, Wei Wuxian descends on Lotus Pier with Lan Wanji, Lan Sizhui, and Wen Ning in tow. They all have a very tearful reunion. Qinglian both looks nothing and everything like Wen Qing. She is so much younger than he is now. He'd thought nothing of her when she had only been Nie Qinglian, but now that he knows she is also Wen Qing, he wants to hold her and never let go.
Qinglian does stay in Lotus Pier. Nie Huaisang has figured out who she is and does not insist she return. She and Jiang Cheng engage in a strange courtship where both sides are very uncertain of the other's regard. He doesn't want to trap her. She worries he can only love part of her. But after about a year, a few days after her 18th birthday, they share a kiss and he asks her to marry him.
She accepts.

[soulmate au! prompt] Lan Wangjis reaction to hearing his soulmate laugh for the first time in 16+ years after wwx is resurrected
“Wangji! Wangji, wake up, look at your Huan-da--daifu, what’s the matter with him?”
His brother was beside him, shouting into Lan Wangji’s ears while the thick, cloying scent of battle gore seeped into his nose; but for once in his nineteen years, Lan Wangji could not find the strength to answer him. His spirit was nothing but an open wound, forever rent in two by the blow of his zhiyin’s demise--and no matter how desperately Lan Xichen called, the anguish in his voice could not match the bone-deep torment of Lan Wangji’s frayed bond, slashed to ribbons and cast asunder like a tattered war-flag left to unravel in the wind.
“Come away from him,” he hears one of the healers cry. “His soulmate is dead, Zewu-jun--it will be a wonder if he knows you at all until the shock is over!”
But the shock never faded, not entirely; and when Wei Ying reappeared at the Yiling courier station three months later, Lan Wangji cleaved to him heart and soul, almost as if he were the lost beloved whose name Lan Wangji would never have the chance to know.
__
When the part of his heart that once belonged to his mingding zhiren awakes for the first time in twenty years, Lan Wangji is certain he imagined it. After all, he felt his soulmate’s death as if their life was a little beating heart, being torn bodily out of his flesh so that he would perish in his absence; but he had lived on after that, and often imagined that he could feel his soulmate’s laughter despite the gaping void in the bond they left behind.
But when the laughter rings out again--insistent, wild, desperate like Lan Wangji would have been, if he ever had the chance to welcome a beloved newly returned from the grave--he leaps out of the tea-serving stall where he meant to wait for Sizhui and Jingyi (Jiang-zongzhu has already gone ahead, so determined to see his nephew win the hunt that he refuses to let the child lead his disciples on his own) and rushes up the mountain, neither knowing nor caring where he goes as he goes somewhere.
It can’t be, he thinks wildly, suddenly remembering the battlefield in Heijian where he felt his soulmate die. That feeling cannot be mistaken, not like this, and it has been half my lifetime since--
And then, as if today’s revelations have no limit whatsoever, he hears a warped, broken strain of music warbling out of a flute.
That is a terrible musician, is Lan Wangji’s first thought.
That is Wangxian, is the next.
Almost before he knows it, Lan Wangji reaches a flat, dusty turning in the road, and freezes at the sight of a thin young man standing there, playing his heart’s song on a crude bamboo dizi as if the melody had been written for him, and drawing Wen Ning away from the rest of the crowd. Lan Wangji is rooted to the spot, unable to think or move or breathe as Wen Ning leaps away amid the chaos, jumping straight past Jiang Wanyin--and Jiang Wanyin gives chase, letting out a roaring bellow and charging into the trees with the Jiang disciples at his heels, and then the man playing the flute falls to his knees and weeps.
But he is laughing through his tears, sucking in air and expelling it again as if he fears that he might suffocate, and Lan Wangji watches as his son and nephew run to his side, helping him lift his head while Jingyi fumbles in his qiankun bag for a bottle of water.
“He really is a lunatic!” Jingyi cries, clearly panicking: he most strongly resembles his Nie xiao-shushu in moments of crisis, especially when the crises involve ghosts or unquiet spirits. “Is it safe to make him drink water, Yuan-ge? Will he choke?”
“Gongzi,” Lan Sizhui says urgently, patting the man’s hand as Lan Wangji finally musters up the strength to move towards them. “Gongzi, did Jiang-zongzhu frighten you? You don’t have to worry about him, all right? You saved all our lives at Mo Manor last night, and we wouldn’t make you go with him anyway--you haven’t done any harm, even if you do cultivate the dark path!”
Cultivate the dark path--
Lan Wangji’s head is swimming. On the ground about six paces in front of him, the young man seems to be working himself up into a frenzy, letting out shouts of manic, high-pitched laughter and sobbing at the same time, and his eyes--a curious shade of grey, which Lan Wangji has only ever seen on a single beloved person--are fixed upon Sizhui’s, drinking in his every feature like a man guzzling water after nearly dying of thirst.
Wangxian.
Zhiji.
Lan Sizhui, who was first his beloved’s child before he became theirs, A-Yuan--
Vaguely, he wonders if his own heart, still registering the joy of his fated beloved after over two decades of silence, could possibly have stopped beating.
“Lan Yuan,” Lan Wangji says: loudly, and clearly, making the man crumpled in the dust shake from head to foot. “Hold Mo-gongzi upright for a moment, so I can lift him. We will bring him back to Gusu.”
Wei Ying--for this unfamiliar-looking Mo-gongzi can only be Wei Ying, to play Wangxian so earnestly and nearly cry himself sick at the knowledge that A-Yuan is alive and well--gives a little gasp in Sizhui’s arms, tearing his gaze away from him and staring at Lan Wangji, and then he makes a small, hurt sound and faints dead away onto Jingyi’s lap.
“Shufu!” Lan Jingyi howls, completely forgetting that Hanguang-jun is the correct honorific to use in public, even for him; and looking ready to faint himself, unless Lan Wangji intervenes. “Uncle, I think he’s dead!”
A sharp pang goes through his chest. “Do not say such things, A-Yi,” Lan Wangji scolds gently, rushing to Sizhui’s side and lifting Wei Ying into his embrace. “Look, he is still breathing. Now, round up your classmates and follow me. We are leaving.”
When Sizhui and Jingyi finally turn away (casting several glances over their shoulders as they go, as if afraid that their mysterious savior from Mo Manor really might die by the time they get back) Lan Wangji waits for the rogue cultivators to clear out, and then he bows his head over Wei Ying’s and cries.
You came back, he sobs to himself, taking Wei Ying’s cold hands in his and pressing them to his lips. Wei Ying--you came back to me!

The Untamed, a brief summary [Part 1/6]
Okay my friends, I have heard your calls. Here’s my play-by-play version of The Untamed.
Note the first: I’m dividing it up into sections because it is, after all, a 50 episode series and I doubt anyone will want to wade through it all in one go.
Note the second: I am going to try to be as unbiased as possible. There are different ways to interpret some of the characters’ actions, especially later in the show when things get morally complex. You can find oceans of meta on this stuff, so I will try not to pick a side when at all possible.
Note the third: I’m going to keep the tone pretty light and humorous. This show gets *dark* in the middle but y’all are reading a summary and I don’t want it to get too dry or too depressing. Please pardon me if I am flippant from time to time.
Part One: Sword Wizard School
I thought about doing a character guide but decided it would be easier to introduce you to characters as we meet them, because there are a LOT of characters. However, I am going to give you a brief primer on the important families/places.
Actually, let me back up a little further. The Untamed is a xianxia drama, so it’s about people trying to become immortal celestial beings. They fight monsters and do a lot of magic, and they live in clans/sects. A clan is a family. A sect is a cultivation style/school. The terms are often used interchangeably (even I’m guilty) but they are not exactly the same. Members of a clan will belong to that sect, but the sect will also take in outsiders to train, who are sect members but not clan members.
There are five Great Sects:
Province: Yunmeng; sect: Jiang, home: Lotus Pier
Province: Gusu, sect: Lan, home: Cloud Recesses
Province: Lanling, sect: Jin, home: Koi/Carp Tower
Province: Qinghe, sect: Nie, home: The Unclean Realm (this is not to say it is dirty, it’s from Buddhism and might also translate to ‘The Worldly Realm’)
Province: Qishan, sect: Wen, home: Nightless City/Nevernight (depending on translation)
Here’s a map I made for my fic reference which shows roughly where these provinces are in relation to each other. I may have pretended they were cities in America so I could calculate mileage. Yes I am the world’s biggest nerd, thanks.
Tumblr media
H’okay! The show is not in chronological order but I am going in chronological order because the point is to make this simple for you. I’ll admit that I may not get everything 100% correct because it’s been a while since I watched parts of it but I’ll try.
Setting: Caiyi Town, [Gusu]
ENTER A GREMLIN.
Meet Wei Wuxian. He is a 16 year old chaos gremlin with ADHD. He does not look 16 but actors in American dramas pretending to be teenagers also do not look 16 so we’ll let that go. He is with his adopted brother (also 16ish, but younger than Wei Wuxian) Jiang Cheng, and his adopted older sister, Jiang Yanli (probably about 6 years older).
Oh, right. Names. Most characters have two names, a birth name and a ‘courtesy’ name which is a fancy name they get when they’re old enough to get their swords and stuff. They also have titles. For the sake of not driving y’all crazy, I will choose the most commonly used name for the character and stick with it, and then give you a chart at the end so you’ll understand fanfiction.
Wei Wuxian and his siblings are headed to Sword Wizard School in Gusu, hosted by the Lan sect. Wei Wuxian is clearly planning to Be Himself during these lectures, and Jiang Cheng does Not Approve. Jiang Cheng is obviously very serious and concerned with appearances, which makes sense because he is the sect heir. As an adopted son, Wei Wuxian can goof off; Jiang Cheng does not have that luxury. (Wei Wuxian is the son of two of Jiang Cheng’s father’s friends, who died when he was young. More on this later.) Jiang Cheng reminds Wei Wuxian and the other disciples that are with them that they are representing the Jiang sect and they should make a good impression.
They don’t think they can get to Cloud Recesses before dark so they get rooms at an inn.
ENTER A SNOB.
Jin Zixuan is the next fun character you’ll meet. He’s also 16 or thereabouts despite looking 24 at minimum. He is a sect heir to the Lanling Jin and he does not like being near or interacting with strangers. He pays the innkeeper to rent the whole inn and throw any other guests out. Is this a dick move? I’m trying to be unbiased here, so yes. Yes it is.
Wei Wuxian tries to flirt with a couple of Jin Zixuan’s retainers to get them to allow the Yunmeng siblings to stay, but Jin Zixuan decides to be a big jerk about it. Fun fact! Jin Zixuan is betrothed to Jiang Yanli! He is literally throwing his betrothed out of an inn so he doesn’t have to share a building with people. Wei Wuxian gets pissy and picks a fight with him but Jiang Yanli convinces him that he’s not worth it (although she is much nicer about it than any of us would be in her shoes), and they decide to head up to Cloud Recesses despite the time.
But alas! In their haste, they leave their invitation behind.
ENTER AN ICE PRINCE
As the Yunmeng trio try to talk their way past the gate, Lan Wangji arrives. Also 16, he is your classic stoic, repressed gay, and is the younger brother of the Lan Sect leader. With him are a bunch of Lan cultivators and a guy on a stretcher who is clearly in rough shape. The Lan cultivators carry him inside.
Wei Wuxian, pure of heart and dumb of ass, decides that this is a great time to try to talk his way through the gate, figuring that Lan Wangji, being an important person, can let them in. Lan Wangji reacts about how you would expect a stoic repressed gay would to a cute boy flirting with him for the first time: uses a silencing spell on him, tells him he’s absolutely not admitted without their invitation, and locks them out.
Jiang Cheng, who has spent the last 3 minutes desperately trying to get his brother to shut up before he gets them all in trouble, sends him back to town to find the invitation.
Int. Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
ENTER A SOFT MAN AND HIS EXTREMELY STARCHED UNCLE
Lan Xichen, the head of the Lan sect and Lan Wangji’s older brother, is studying the guy they brought in, with his uncle. Lan Xichen is young for a sect leader (he’s only 19 in the book but probably 24-25ish in the show) and his uncle advises him a lot of the time. The guy they brought is kind of dead but also kind of not. They say a bunch of stuff you won’t understand if you have not seen xianxia dramas before. It’s not really important.
Ext. Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
RE-ENTER THE GREMLIN
Wei Wuxian has come back with the invitation to find the rest of his sect no longer waiting outside and all of Cloud Recesses sealed by wards. “Wards are made to be broken,” he says, demonstrating a clear lack of understanding of their purpose. It’s a good thing he’s here for school.
He breaks in, carrying a couple jars of liquor, only to find Lan Wangji standing guard. Lan Wangji reprimands him for breaking important Lan sect rules like a) not breaking and entering, b) not coming in after dark, and c) bringing alcohol, which is forbidden. Wei Wuxian offers him one of the jars because he is 16 and stupid and for some reason thought a bribe was what this situation needed. Lan Wangji pulls a sword on him, which is definitely a reasonable response and not because he has his first boner and he’s angry about it.
They have a sword fight, basically to a draw. Lan Wangji drags him in to see Lan Xichen, who clearly thinks this is hilarious. Wei Wuxian blames everything on Jin Zixuan and Lan Wangji. He also says intelligent things about the not-a-corpse they’re examining, because the writers wanted us to know that he’s not a whole dumbass. Lan Xichen basically slaps him on the wrist, tells him to behave himself and sends him off to the guest house his siblings were given, and then teases Lan Wangji about Baby’s First Crush.
Ext, Nightless City [Qishan]
ENTER AN OVER THE TOP VILLAIN AND HIS HENCHMEN
Nightless City isn’t actually nightless. It’s just never dark there because it’s on top of a volcano, because that’s where all the cool villains live.
This is the home of the Qishan Wen, who are Obviously Evil from the Black Outfits, Volcano Lair, and Shuffling Zombies. Their leader is Wen Ruohan. His personality is that he is evil. He’s saying a bunch of stuff you won’t understand yet and then sends his Obnoxious Son Wen Chao off to look for something. He also sends Wen Qing, who is related to him somehow, presumably. She asks if she can bring her brother, Wen Ning, and Wen Ruohan says sure because all he cares about is Being Evil in his Zombie Volcano Lair.
Int, Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
ENTER A SLACKER and his friend, EVERY RETAIL EMPLOYEE DEALING WITH A KAREN YOU’VE EVER MET.
They’re all at the first lecture, and there’s a ceremony where each visiting sect presents a gift to Lan Qiren (the uncle/teacher). I think we might see what the Jin give him but I don’t care. Right now we’re talking about Nie Huaisang, the younger brother of the sect leader of the Nie sect. He is baby. He has brought a bird to class for no reason other than that he caught it and thinks it’s cool. Presenting to the dour and stern Lan Qiren makes him nervous.
With him is Meng Yao. Unlike everyone else you’ve met so far, Meng Yao is not a member of the gentry. He is the son of the Jin sect leader and a prostitute. (Yes, this makes him Jin ‘I can’t breathe the same air as commoners’ Zixuan’s younger brother.) When he was old enough to do Sword Magic he went to the Jin sect and asked for admittance, and his father had him thrown down a set of 200 steps because his father is an Enormous Douche. (That’s not biased. Hating this dude is one of the few things everyone agrees on.) Then he went to the Nie sect, and they said, “Sure, you can come in, but you’re not really a disciple, mmkay?” and he said sure. But he has worked his way up to being the assistant to the sect leader which is a pretty important position for someone with his background.
Naturally, because Meng Yao is Not Like the Others, a few people take this opportunity to gossip and talk smack about him. Meng Yao is upset but tries not to look it. Lan Xichen takes a moment to reassure him, saying that the Nie sect leader had written to him about what a helpful and awesome assistant he had now, and that Meng Yao obviously lived up to it. Meng Yao immediately develops the world’s Most Obvious Crush Don’t @ Me You Would Too.
ENTER MR. OBNOXIOUS, AN IRON MAIDEN, and A PUPPY. Fortunately these are the last characters you’ll meet for a while.
The Wen sect shows up at the gates of Cloud Recesses like ‘what up, I got a big attitude and fuck you’. The gate dude tells them they can’t come in without an invitation, and Wen Chao attacks him because he was raised in a volcano and they go in anyway. With Wen Chao are Wen Qing and her brother, Wen Ning. They are actually pretty awesome, you just don’t know it yet.
Wen Chao busts in on the Saluting Ceremony just as Jiang Cheng is trying to present their gift, and immediately begins insulting everyone there. You should count yourself fortunate that you’re only reading this because Wen Chao is literally the most obnoxious character in this show. Anyway, Wei Wuxian decides to pick a fight with him even though this is *obviously* a stupid thing to do. (I love Wei Wuxian with my whole heart but he is so stupid at 16 lmao.) He calls Wen Chao out on interrupting Jiang Cheng. Wen Chao reacts completely rationally and calmly BAHAHA who am I kidding, he pulls his sword out. Everyone else pulls their swords out. Wen Qing looks like she has the world’s worst migraine.
Lan Xichen takes out his flute and plays eight seconds of music that makes everyone’s swords go flying into the ceiling. Had I mentioned how awesome Lan Xichen is? Because he is Awesome.
Wen Chao gets even more pissy but Wen Qing shuts him down, saying she and her brother are there for Sword Wizard School and she’s sorry her cousin is such an asshole. Lan Xichen tells them to ‘try to come on time’ tomorrow. Had I mentioned how awesome Lan Xichen is? It bears repeating.
Ext, Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
Wei Wuxian is making fast friends with Nie Huaisang. They decide to go fishing in one of the streams. He sees Wen Qing sneaking around and asks what she’s doing there. She blows him off.
Meng Yao stops Lan Xichen and says goodbye to him. Lan Xichen asks why he’s leaving so soon, and Meng Yao says that he can’t actually stay for the lectures, since he’s only an assistant to the Nie sect, not a disciple. Lan Xichen tells him that Nie Mingjue (the head of the Nie sect) is just and honorable and will surely reward him for working so hard. They make heart eyes at each other for like a solid thirty seconds before Meng Yao manages to leave.  I’m sorry, I’m trying to be unbiased. They gaze at each other longingly – no, shit, that’s still biased. They, uh, regard each other with mutual respect for thirty solid seconds and then Meng Yao leaves.
Meanwhile Jiang Cheng is Fretting about the fact that Wei Wuxian is Making a Bad Impression. He ain’t seen nothing yet. Jiang Yanli calms him down.
Wen Qing talks to her brother Wen Ning and is sad because he’s sick. She promises him that someday they’ll be able to leave Nightless City.
Int, Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
Lan Qiren is lecturing. Wei Wuxian proposes some casual heresy. Lan Qiren gets mad and tells him to copy the Chapter of Conduct a thousand times, and throws him out of class. Jiang Cheng tries to crawl under his desk.
Instead of going to copy lines, Wei Wuxian wanders off and meets A PUPPY, ie Wen Ning. He is practicing his archery. Wei Wuxian proceeds to help him with his stance and Wen Ning looks like he just discovered his bisexuality. Wen Qing sees them together and is clearly not thrilled. Wei Wuxian asks her why she’s always wandering around the back hills of Cloud Recesses and asks if she’s looking for something. She tells him not to be stupid and leaves with her brother.
Lan Wangji drags Wei Wuxian back to the library for his punishment. Wei Wuxian proceeds to spend the next few hours doing Everything That Is Not That, which culminates in him exchanging Lan Wangji’s book for some porn when he’s not looking. Lan Wangji tears the porn up and tells him to piss off.
~romance~
Jiang Cheng: I hope you’re proud of yourself.
Wei Wuxian: I absolutely am.
They go back to their guest house. Wen Qing is there. She’s a doctor! Told you she was awesome. Jiang Yanli wasn’t feeling well and Wen Qing gave her some medicine. They talk about the fact that there aren’t lectures for a few days because Lan Qiren is off doing Official Stuff.
But there’s still fun to be had! There’s a water demon attacking people in the nearby town. Lan Xichen is worried that it’s serious and he’s going to go himself. Lan Wangji goes with him. Wei Wuxian asks if he and Jiang Cheng can go ‘get some practice’ as they fight lots of water demons in Yunmeng. Lan Xichen, remembering his brother’s obvious crush, says sure. Wen Ning wants to go too. So does Wen Qing. Lan Xichen suddenly feels like a chaperone on a field trip but says fine because he’s the cool older brother.
Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to ask questions about the not-a-corpse from earlier. Lan Xichen politely tells him that’s it handled and not to worry about it. Wei Wuxian thinks there’s something he’s not telling him, and he mentions that to Lan Wangji, who agrees but won’t say so. Wei Wuxian can tell anyway because he’s learning to read Lan Wangji’s microexpressions.
They fight a water demon. Jiang Cheng gets injured and Wen Qing patches him up. He looks at her with puppy eyes. Some dumbass loses his sword in the water. Wen Ning tries to help him despite being uniquely unqualified to do so, and passes out. Wei Wuxian tries to rescue both of them, and Lan Wangji ends up rescuing all three of them despite clearly wanting to let the water demon eat them. Jiang Cheng buys a comb to give to Wen Qing but chickens out and doesn’t give it to her. Wei Wuxian deduces that Wen Ning’s illness is because of a previous bad experience with ghostly spirits or something, and gives Wen Qing a talisman to give to her brother that will help protect him from monsters. He says that no matter what she’s looking for at Cloud Recesses, he hopes the talisman will help Wen Ning.
Then he tries to buy Lan Wangji some fruit as a gift. Lan Wangji refuses to look at him. Lan Xichen starts mentally writing wedding invitations.
Ext. Nightless City [Qishan]
ENTER AN EDGELORD (sorry I forgot about him, in fact I think this happened earlier but the timing isn’t really important)
Meet Xue Yang. You have no idea who he is. Wen Ruohan is demanding he hand over something called yin iron. Xue Yang’s response to this is basically ‘choke me harder, Daddy’ and you’re left feeling vaguely disturbed.
Int. Cloud Recesses [Gusu]
It’s party time! Wei Wuxian smuggled some liquor back with him. He, Jiang Cheng, and Nie Huaisang get drunk. They give Jiang Cheng a hard time about his high standards for women.
Lan Wangji comes in like the hall monitor you hated in high school to break it up. Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang run away. Wei Wuxian uses a talisman on Lan Wangji to keep him from reporting them and make him take a drink of the alcohol. We all remind ourselves very firmly that he is only 16 and will do stupid shit, despite wanting to slap him. Lan Wangji has never had alcohol before and one drink makes him blackout drunk. Wei Wuxian has to babysit him for the rest of the night. Serves him right.
The next day, they’re all in trouble, even Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian tries to tell Lan Qiren that it’s not Lan Wangji’s fault, but Lan Wangji accepts his punishment anyway. They get hit with a stick a bunch of times.
Lan Wangji goes to recuperate in the cold springs. Lan Xichen, the world’s biggest troll, sends Wei Wuxian to do the same. Lan Wangji nearly has an aneurysm when Wei Wuxian tries to start taking his clothes off.
ENTER THE PLOT
They get pulled underwater and end up in a cave. It’s a magic cave where only members of the Lan clan are allowed to be. To keep the cave from killing him, Lan Wangji wraps his Magic Forehead Ribbon around Wei Wuxian’s wrist. This is the same magic forehead ribbon he told Wei Wuxian ten episode minutes ago that only parents, spouses, and children are allowed to touch. Draw what conclusions you will.
There’s a ghostly lady in the cave who is Lan Wangji’s ancestor. She tells them Evil Is Abroad. A long time ago a dude named Xue Chonghai took a bunch of pieces of metal and filled them full of evil energy. Everyone banded together and killed him, but the metal couldn’t be completely destroyed, so it was split into ‘the cardinal directions’ and then sealed and hidden. Ah ha! This is what Wen Ruohan is looking for! It’s called Evil MacGuffin yin iron.
Wei Wuxian says if it’s so powerful, why don’t they use it to fight back? Ghost lady says she tried that but it’s too evil and it doesn’t work. She gives them the piece that was sealed in the cave and tells them to go fight evil together. Lan Wangji is glad it’s too cold to have a boner.
Except then she throws them out of the cave and onto dry land and Wei Wuxian lands on top of him and he definitely gets one from that. Sorry, Lan Wangji, I don’t make the rules.
They’ve been missing for two days and everyone is really upset, especially Jiang Cheng, who thinks Wei Wuxian was just goofing off.
Lan Xichen takes the piece of yin iron they got in the cave and seals it in a pouch. They discuss the fact that Wen Ruohan is clearly collecting the pieces of yin iron and this is Bad News Bears. The yin iron will respond to other pieces of yin iron so they decide they should use the piece they have to locate the other pieces.
But first, classes are over! Despite the fact that each of these events has led seamlessly into the next and it seems like they’ve been there a week, they’ve actually been there six months. If you dealt with the Teen Wolf ‘timeline’ I assume you can deal with that lmao.
There’s a lantern-lighting ceremony to celebrate. Wei Wuxian paints a rabbit on his lantern because there were a bunch of rabbits in the cave and Lan Wangji clearly likes rabbits. This makes Lan Wangji smile for the first time. They all light their lanterns and make a wish.
Wei Wuxian wishes he can stand with justice and live without regrets. Lan Wangji looks at him like he’s about to propose. Wen Qing wishes she could protect her little brother and that he’ll always be safe. Jiang Cheng looks at her like he’s about to propose. Nie Huaisang wishes he can pass his classes and get the hell out of high school. Truly, the most relatable.
But the moment is ruined because people start teasing Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli, asking why they didn’t light a lantern together and wish for a happy marriage. Jin Zixuan, the paragon of reacting reasonably to things, storms off. He tells his sect members he doesn’t want to hear about the marriage and they should stop bringing it up. Wei Wuxian overhears and they get into a fight. Jiang Yanli manages to get Wei Wuxian to back off.
The next day, Wei Wuxian is being punished for punching a jerk in the face. He is kneeling on the rocks of the courtyard. But he’s already gotten distracted because there’s an anthill and he has ADHD. Lan Wangji calls him ‘unteachable’ and stomps off, clearly mad at his boner like usual.
Because this is kind of important, the two sect leaders have showed up to hash it out. Jiang Yanli’s dad says ‘listen, if your son doesn’t want to marry my daughter, we shouldn’t force him’. Jin Zixuan’s dad says, ‘kids are stupid and they don’t know what they want’. Jiang Yanli’s dad says, ‘well I absolutely agree your son is stupid but he’s being a jerk to my daughter so why don’t we politely call this off before something happens that makes one of us impolitely call it off’, and Jin Zixuan’s dad agrees. Jiang Yanli is upset, although why she actually wanted to marry Jin Zixuan is beyond everyone involved, including the audience. Then again it can’t be easy to hear that some dude who has barely even met you has decided you’re not good enough for him.
Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian sees Lan Xichen telling Lan Wangji ‘be careful’ and correctly deduces that Lan Wangji is leaving with the yin iron to try to find the other pieces, while Lan Xichen stays behind to protect Cloud Recesses since the Wen sect thinks it’s still there. He leaves a note that says ‘gone monster hunting, meet you back at home!’ Jiang Cheng nearly has an aneurysm, especially when his dad is like ‘lmao that kid is such a dumbass’.
~end Sword Wizard School~
okay, guys, what did you think? was this helpful? could you follow it? was it at least vaguely entertaining? should I keep going?

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed - Episode 02
Warning: Spoilers for all 50 episodes!
(Masterpost ) (Previous Episode) (Next Episode)
Donkey Riding
way ho and away we go, donkey riding donkey riding way ho and away we go, riding on a donkey
Wei Wuxian and Apple are doing their best for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Tumblr media
Xiao Zhan had trouble riding the donkey sitting side-saddle, so the Department of Questionable Practical Effects made him a fake leg to wear while riding regular style.
Tumblr media
Can you spot it? It’s very hard to spot. It is very convincing.
Simple Pleasures
Wei Wuxian takes his time wandering up the nearest mountain, and half of the cultivators in the land also wander up this mountain because...Night Hunting! The cultivators are hot and thirsty from walking because they forgot that they all know how to fly.
Wei Wuxian relaxes by a well and listens to people stanning him.
Also
Tumblr media
I’m going to say it: Wei Wuxian never met a drinking vessel he couldn’t blow.
Everything is Beautiful at the Ballet
The actress who plays A-Yan is named Zhang Linran. She probably has studied dance since she was 4 and now she gets her big break which turns out to be feeding an apple to a donkey. So let’s pause for a second to look at how beautifully she moves.
Tumblr media
Reunions are Awkward, Part 1
Wei Wuxian meets up with one of his family members and it goes super well.
Tumblr media
I...like Jin Ling? He’s much less of a douchebag than his dad, his uncles Jin, Jiang, and Mo (the three stooges), and every damn one of his Jin cousins. He’s genuinely brave (his Dad’s primary good quality) and his hair is on fleek. He’s still a whiny diaper baby, but I like him.
Tumblr media
(much more after the cut!)
Then Jiang Cheng shows up, looking fine as hell and radiating peak arrogant-prick energy.
Tumblr media
When he discovers that ‘Mo Xuanyu” stuck a piece of paper to Jin Ling, he tells the child to literally murder him. Excellent uncleing! A+++++ would recommend.
Tumblr media
“In fact, literally murder anyone who uses Yiling Laozu’s tools, like talismans, lure flags, or spirit compasses - basically murder everyone in the Lan Clan plus those other fanboys we saw coming up the hill. Then get out there and make some friends, goddamn it!”
Tumblr media
These nets full of cultivators on this daytime night hunt are the only time we ever see anything in a net during a night hunt.  In fact dudes constantly go night hunting and the only prey we ever see is rock lady, murder turtle, and a couple of rag mops in the lake.
You Are Not Qualified to Speak to Me
Also radiating arrogant-prick energy on this occasion is Lan Wangji. He has been using pettiness as a weapon since long before he met this Jiang Cheng turkey, and he *brings it* when Jiang Cheng tries to have a conversation with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Letting your eyes wander everywhere except to his punchable face while you ignore his passive-aggressive questions? Quality work.
Dropping a silence spell on his child and then letting your own child explain it to him? Golden.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is never ever going to forgive Jiang Cheng for what he did on cliff day, and his silence here is as pointed as an ice pick. I suspect the last words Lan Wangji actually spoke to him were “Jiang Wanyin, stop it,” sixteen years ago.
Jiang Cheng is actually the bigger person in this particular interaction, visibly mastering his temper and telling Jin Ling to take his medicine.
Tumblr media
Reflecting
Wei Wuxian hangs out by a beautiful river and hallucinates for a while. River Jiang Yanli is nurturing and River Jiang Cheng is pissed off, so there are no surprises there.  River Jiang Cheng thinks that Wei Wuxian is a promise-breaking douchebag. He’s not exactly wrong.
Tumblr media
Courtesy of convenient gossiping cultivators, Wei Wuxian discovers that the 16 year old arrogant kid from the Jin clan who his brother from the Jiang clan has custody of is actually and quite obviously Jin Rulan.
Tumblr media
Well fuck I guess now I care about something, that’s inconvenient.
Needing to help parent the child of the sister who parented him is what draws Wei Wuxian fully into his new life.
Tumblr media
As soon as he has this realization, Apple comes back from roaming around, and never gives him any trouble after this for the rest of the story. Which...probably doesn’t mean anything.
Wen Gravesite
Does Wen Ning hang out here because it’s where he and his (dead) people came from? Oh great, now I am sad.
Tumblr media
Judging by all the leaves on this grave thingy I’m going to say that this grave tender dude is, ah, not very good at his job.
Tumblr media
Get him, Jingyi!
Tumblr media
I feel like maybe we all focus too much on how Lan Jingyi is so hilarious and sardonic and not enough on how he is a such a biscuit.
Soul Grass
Tumblr media
As mentioned in the previous post, Chinese spiritual concepts don’t always translate well into English. Soul grass? Sure, why not.
This is where Wei Wuxian’s Sherlock Holmes brain starts to work, although he still doesn’t remember really basic stuff about Dafan Mountain. Dying and changing bodies is rough on the old neurochemistry. This creates more opportunities for flashbacks, however, and if there’s one thing The Untamed deffo needs more of, it’s kissing flashbacks.
Temple Statue
Presumably grave-tender dude is also in charge of clearing away spiderwebs at the temple, because it’s not getting done.
Jin Ling walks into the temple blaspheming at full volume.
Tumblr media
Since this isn’t a Greek story, he isn’t immediately struck blind for this. Then when he wishes for the statue to come alive, it obligingly does.  Everything’s coming up Rulan!
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian shows up to rescue all the kids by throwing talismans at the monster which does not tip anyone off to who he is.
Baby Cultivator Babysitting
Lan Wangji chills out in the cultivators’ pavilion with Jiang Cheng and their mutual hate boners.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian forgets all about his nephew and turns into cool professor guy, explaining the basics of soul-eating to the baby cultivators and gleefully encouraging their fear of Hanguang-Jun’s punishments.
Because the Lan babies are good filial children they are super respectful and engaged with this random adult who is lecturing them. They also - like their own Hanguang-Jun at their age - see and admire Wei Wuxian’s intellect. It’s easy to forget how extremely smart Wei Wuxian is, because of how extremely dumb Wei Wuxian is.
Lan Jingyi suddenly figures out Wei Wuxian is not crazy.
Tumblr media
Bis. Kit.
Then Rock Lady shows up and Jin Ling sticks 6 arrows into her while Lans Jingyi and Sizhui stand around not bothering to draw their swords.
I see a lot of comments about the bad effects in the statue sequences but I think Rock Lady is all right. The figure animation is decent and the lighting is no worse on her than on everything else in the scene. Her hair is nice, for a rock person.
Tumblr media
Admittedly I just finished watching Guardian which has CGI monsters so bad they may have injured my retinas and possibly also my DNA, so the bar, for me, is pretty low. Rock lady clears it with room to spare.
Note: Wei Wuxian’s flute playing does zippity towards controlling the statue. Not sure what his plan was here.
Wen Ning Kicks Ass
Now we get to meet Wen Ning, who appears to be a stone-cold badass. Later we will discover how hilariously inaccurate that assessment is.
Tumblr media
While all versions of Wen Ning are delightful, this version of Wen Ning is also...strangely attractive? He’s got a Patti-Smith-Horses-Era vibe here, instead of his more usual lost-baby-dork vibe. And his dreamy “I have nails in my head” expression is intriguing.
Tumblr media
I mean, he’s not a total snack like zombie Song Lan or pre-zombie Song Lan or blind Song Lan or post-zombie Song Lan, but this look is a good one for Wen Ning, is what I’m saying.
Reunions are Awkward, Part 2
Lan Wangji, who has 99% already recognized Wei Wuxian because of the haunted sword and the fierce jawline and beautiful neck and tiny tiny waist, is summoned by his flute playing as inexorably as the Ghost General was.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng also recognizes Wei Wuxian and goes into full beatdown mode, thwarted (silently) by Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian attempts to preserve his incognito by sassing Jiang Cheng in as sibling-like a manner as possible.
Hanguang-Jun’s Pro-Ghost Agenda Has Been Clear for Some Time
This Jiang/Lan fight is hilarious when you consider the implications.
Tumblr media
Macroexpression vs. Microexpression
Mo Xuanyu brought Wei Wuxian back using sacrifice summons, a dark ritual invented by Wei Wuxian that he, most likely, did NOT show to Lan Wangji back in the day. So it’s a pretty safe bet that Lan Wangji doesn’t know that Wei Wuxian was gifted a body, rather than stealing one.
Tumblr media
when your brother turns around, you must whip him you will never live it down unless you whip him
When Jiang Cheng lets loose with Zidian, it’s not just because he’s angry. He’s using purple power to force Wei Wuxian’s ghost out of the body he’s apparently possessed. And Lan Wangji instantly STOPS him from doing that.
Clan Leader Jiang: this person has been possessed, against their will, by an evil ghost
Future Chief Cultivator Lan: Counterpoint: I am banging the ghost
Flashback Time
Welcome to your 30-episode flashback!
Tumblr media
Once I used to join in Every boy and girl was my friend Now there's revolution, but they don't know What they're fighting
Let us close our eyes Outside their lives go on much faster Oh, we won't give in We'll keep living in the past
Road Tripping to Summer School
Gosh I’m looking forward to younger, kinder, more relatable Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
...prick.
Incidentally, until now this episode didn’t know that Jiang Cheng has smile muscles, and neither did the person who glued his wig on for him.
Tumblr media
I Like Rabbits
Here we have our first rabbit in a large collection of rabbit iconography that appears in The Untamed.
Tumblr media
Instead of sending everyone to the Wikipedia page for Tu'er Shen I’m going to take this opportunity to rec the short film Kiss of the Rabbit God by Andrew Thomas Huang (tw: blood, tw:body-mod cutting) which you can read about and watch over at  Nowness.com
Tumblr media
Particularly if you are a queer person of Chinese heritage, check it out.
So. What the fuck are these? Are they food?
Tumblr media
Are they made from wax? Or corn starch? or pig intestines?
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian runs off to get laid drunk and Jiang Cheng grumps about it. Jiang Yanli reminds him that being free is a Jiang Clan Rule, so really Wei Wuxian is following the rules by not following the rules. Does that mean he’s not free? My head hurts.
Jiang Cheng: yes but grump grump grump
Jiang Yanli: Nothing bad will ever happen because of A-Xian’s choices, trust me
Outro
Wei Wuxian faint tally: one  Caught by: the cold hard ground
Soundtrack: 1. Donkey Riding by Great Big Sea 2. Living in the Past by Jethro Tull 3. Whip It by Devo
Fic prompt:  Lan Wangji’s internal monologue while he sits in the pavilion with Jiang Cheng
If you write a fic from this prompt and want to share, please post a link in comments!
Bonus: Wang Zuocheng, macro-expression king

There's been a lot of cql/mdzs atla-au posts going around lately and I need to add my take.
Because I think a lot could be done with Wei Ying as the avatar.
Imagine the story goes similarly as in canon. He is the son of traveling benders. Maybe Cangse-Sanren is a firebender and Wei Changse a waterbender. They get killed on some mission and he gets taken in by his father's old friend and leader of the Yunmeng water tribe. (This reminds me a lot of kyoshi's backstory, too.) He raises him a long his own children, his daughter who takes to healing more than fighting, and his son who likes nothing more than fighting.
Wei Ying already showed signes of being a waterbender, so they train him, even though he is the son of a former servant. He is, of course, more talented than any other of their students, even Jiang Cheng. Madam Yu still hates him for it.
At some point, they let all the children of the sect take the Avatar test. He passes. Occurs, they don't tell him until he is 16, so he doesn't know. Madam Yu dies though and her hatred for him for upstanding her son only grows. But Wei Ying is happy and loves them, much like in canon and, much like in canon, he is also convinced that he is deeply indebted to him and always brings more trouble than he is worth.
When they tell him he is the avatar on his 16th birthday, he is shocked and scared of his responsibility, but doesn't show it. He laughs it off and tells everyone he is glad because that means he can see the world and doesn't have to annoy madam yu anymore. He only shows cracks to his cheerful facade when they tell him that he has to leave the very next day. That means he will miss Jiang Cheng's birthday. When he tells Jiang Cheng's this, he gets angry and tells Wei Ying that clearly he is very important now and why not run off to the other sects, see if they will put up with him. He refuses to say goodbye after that, so it's just jiang yanli and Jiang fengmian seeing him off.
He goes to king Nie first who is the most renowned earth bending master of their time. He is unyielding and harsh, but unbelievably fond of his younger brother, who mostly uses his bending to sculp intricate and detailed statues. Wei Ying likes him instantly.
Next is fire. He doesn't like the fire lord who greets him and treats him like he is royalty himself, but in a way that makes Wei Ying's skin crawl. He does like the shy boy in his group lessons and his older sister. Wei Ying is good at firebending, even though it should be his natural enemy. Maybe it's his mother's side showing itself though.
Then of course, to complete his training, he needs to learn air-bending. He gets to Gusu and immediately dislikes it there. They are monks and they live like it, too. There are rules regulating every waking moment and the sleeping ones too and he vows to break at least half of them. By now he us 20 and he'll be damned if he lets himself be bossed around like he's 12 again.
He is greeted by their unusually young leader and his uncle and brother. He expects the uncle to be his teacher, but no. Lan Xichen explains that the honor of training the Avatar will go to the youngest air bender to ever become a master, his brother, Lan Zhan.
Okay, Wei Ying thinks, he can live with that. At least a teacher close to his own age should be fun, right?
Wrong!
Lan Zhan is strict, reticent, unyielding and punishes him for every single infringement of the 3000+ rules. He scolds Wei Ying for not taking the enormous responsibility of being the avatar more seriously. He never smiles and never praises him with more than a "passable".
But he is a challenge. One he is good! The best opponent in a fight Wei Ying has had since he was 14. And there is something so fun at making him react in even the slightest way! Also, his ears blush when he is angry and it's cute!
The first time, Wei Ying uses something other than air bending in their training fights, Lan Zhan is furious (Undisciplined!). But tge second time he grots his teeth and fights, really fights Wei Ying. He holds his own again a 3/4s-trained avatar for more than 30 minutes until Wei Ying let's him get swallowed by a whole in the ground that he than seals with a thick layer of ice that will take him way to long to slice open with air bending.
After that, their relationship evolves. It's more of a mutual rivalry, rather than just Wei Ying needling his air bending teacher until he snaps. After a few months, once Wei Ying has progressed beyond the basics (he can fly now! He loves flying! How can the Lans be so serious all the time? They can fly!!!), Lan Zhan introduces him to musical air-bending. Through bending, they can use the sounds to heal and to hurt, amplify them at will or direct them to a specific direction. Lan Zhan demonstrates some techniques on his guqin and then plays a song, though he refuses to tell Wei Ying its meaning.
Wei Ying picks a dixi. He takes to music like a fish to water and soon he is declared a fully trained air bender. His last night in Gusu is when it happens. News reaches them that Yunmeng is under attack from the Wen sect, who have been annexing more minor territoires for years. By the time Wei Ying gets there Lan Zhan at his side, Lotus Peer is burned to the ground. They barely get Jiang Cheng and Jiamg Yanli out, helped by Wei Ying's old friend, Wen Ning. They make it Wen Qing, who takes one look at Lan Zhan and tells him to go because Gusu is next.
(The wens knew where the avatar was abd where he wasn't abd chose their attacks accordingly)
Lan Zhan rushes back (alone. Wei Ying has brother to get back from the brink of death) but he us too late, too. Cloud Recesses is burned, his father dead, his brother missing and he is taken prisoner.
The war happens almost like in canon. The other heirs are taken hostage and given lessons as to how to behave towards their occupiers. They escape through the stupidity of Wen Chao.
I don't think that there'd be a burial mounts though, nor an equivalent to the list golden core. you can take someone's bending but i want Wei Ying to remain the avatar because:
In his desperation to beat the seemingly almighty Wen and his grieve for the Jiangs who took him in, he devices a plan. A) he goes to Lan Zhan and asks him if musical cultivation might help him to learn how to control the avatar state. He says they can try. They do try and after a while, Wei Ying reaches that state. And B) he rensacks the world for scrolls on blood cultivation.
When they advance on nightless City, he is ready. No one kniws his plan. Even Lan Zhan only knows of his having learned to control the avatar state. He needs the element of surprise and he needs it when he stavds in front of Wen Ruohan.
So he waits. By the time he stands face to face with Wen Ruohan and his army, the floor us littered with corpses.
Wei Ying, in front of his brother, Lan Zhan, everyone goes into the avatar state and with the power of all his former incarnations, bebds the blood of every single corpse, as well as every single Wen soldier to turn on Wen Ruohan and then each other. It's a massacre.
When he comes to it again, there is silence. And then cheers. Everyone cheers for him, even though blood bending has veen outlawed for ages. He won them their war though.
Everyone cheers, everyone but Lan Zhan.
They fight after that, a lot.
(I helped you enter the avatar state. You could have died! - my problem, not yours! - You desecrated the dead! What about their spirits? - what about their spirits? I'm the avatar, i can deal with them! - the avatar state is the sacret link to your past lifes ... - My past lifes, yeah Lan Wangji! Let me decide what to do with them. - Wei Wuxian! - Lan Wangji.)
They part on bad terms more often than not.
So when knews reaches that the Jins, a notoriously rich noble family in some corner of the earth kingdom, has taken Wen citizens, civilians mostly, for slave labour, he goes alone. He is furious, more so when he realises that his friends are among them. He enters the avatar stare involuntarily and has the blood of all present Jin soldiers boil in their veins. Wen Ning is almost dead, but he uses his bending to circulate his blood in his body until he can get him to his sister. She is in Lanling after all, having married their heir.
Now because I love Jiang Yanli, in this au, she plays a bigger role. She saves Wen Ning and shows them out of Lanling.
They flee to a part of Qishan that was all but destroyed during the war and then used as a mass grave for the Wens wei ying himself killed, the ones whose spirits Lan Zhan had warned him about.
And the workd turns on it's Avatar.
The avatar is supposed to bring Peace, stand for balance and justice. Not choose a handful of people to protect at all costs.
But Wei Ying thinks, this is just! The world is full of greedy rich people trying to outdo each other for power, so isn't protecting those who suffer from it through no fault of their own justice?
Now, this could go two ways. Either, in a plot more similar to mdzs, the spirits Wei Ying disturbed abd that he is now living on top of, betray him when the rest of the world finally comes to ambush him (cue Lan Zhan trying g to protect him abd falling from grace himself. And the eternally yearning because he list his chance. the avatar is reborn ofc and Lan Zhan vows to protect them because Wei Ying is still a part of them, but they aren't Wei Ying. They are a completely different person and Lan Zhan never loves again.) DEPRESSING
So, let's go the atla route. Wei Ying goes through a spiritual journey, similar to Korra, gets the Wen remnants rehabilitated, makes the right people see sense and basically does the whole Avatar shitck of first finding peace within himself in order to bring peace to the world. *waves hand*
He confesses to Lan Zhan. They adopt A Yuan. Cue kiss in front of a glowing sunset and "The End" displayed to soaring music.
Admittedly, the second ending needs more flashing out, but it's late,so if anyone wants to have a go, feel free :D

...goddamn, I’m still thinking about this wen ning-su she swap AU, because the question occurred ‘if you can use demonic cultivation without a core, and awakened fierce corpses seem pretty similar to humans aside from the lack of spiritual energy... could an awakened fierce corpse use demonic cultivation?’
anyway in this ‘verse WWX decided to go on a little sabbatical to the Burial Mounds to meditate or something, and then wound up staying there because the pressure for him to Stop Being Him kept growing and him and Jiang Cheng’s relationship was becoming more strained; this was still meant to be temporary but it gets complicated when rumors spread that he’s starting a sect based on demonic cultivation, and wwx is like ‘lol no I’m not?’ only to poke his head out of the cave he’s been napping in and find out that sms has returned from wherever he went to brood last and has been recruiting people that show up as disciples
screaming arguments happen where sms is like I’M SORRY FOR ATTEMPTING TO GET US MANPOWER WHEN WE’RE ABOUT TO GET ATTACKED ANY DAY NOW and wwx is like STOP TELLING PEOPLE THINGS AND SAYING I SIGNED OFF ON THEM oh wait i’ve packbonded with some of these losers you brought in now. i guess i’m a bit more ok with it
(jgy is currently hiding the whole wen fam in his basement and repeatedly hurrying his assistant, a-ning (who definitely isn’t a wen who thinks he looks like  a wen? don’t be silly) away from jin zixun before things go bad on either side)
I’m seeing wwx’s death in this ‘verse either being a modified Qiongqi Path - there’s no Hundred Holes Curse in this scenario, but look, I REALLY don’t think you need to try hard to make jin zixun want to try and take out wwx; and it would be so easy to play a scenario where wwx and sms argue about him going, causing wwx to slip off to go alone and get caught without backup--or some kind of scenario where the Jin kidnap one of the Yiling Wei’s younger disciples and use them as bait for wwx to come over and get killed. either way, he still dies around the same time, but sms--and the rest of the sorta-sect--still have demonic cultivation on their side, and they successfully defend the Burial Mounds against siege. everyone thinks about their life choices for a bit, someone yells ‘we’ll get ‘em next time, boys!’ and we cut to 13-16 years of very very uneasy peace
(in this scenario you could TOTALLY still have at least jiang yanli, and maybe even jin zixuan, alive if you wanted! just realized that.)
(in the wwx-is-dead interim, wen ning assists jgy in killing nmj quick n’ sweet with some untraceable poison or something. rip nmj. wen ning is also REALLY useful in knocking people out for ‘assassinations’ to be conducted by ‘outside forces’, etc. he also gets along great with all the kids! great guy)
i could see sms as, before wwx’s death, basically trying to pretend he hadn’t died (don’t read into the amount I cover up or the fact I never use qi in public anymore! I still carry a sword AND my robes are wrapped the right way. shut up) but after, leaning ALL the way into the oldstyle Yiling Patriarch, nightmare of the battlefield aesthetic. the Yiling Wei have almost a Ghost Valley rep--are they human? are they demons? we just don’t know, etc; and sms gets ALL the atmospheric mileage he can out of being Actually Legit Dead. god. he’d probably get some kind of White Grim Reaper moniker and encourage the fuck out of it. wwx is going to die of secondhand embarrassment when he comes back to life and sees how edgy everyone’s aesthetic is
(look I don’t know HOW this happens exactly but in this AU i need jin rusong to live also. usually I don’t really care but I just reread what i wrote above and pictured Wen Ning--possibly not able to see his family all that often because jgy got them settled somewhere safe, but rather out of the way, and he has duties in Jinlintai--bonding with jgy’s kid, and my heart is FULL i need this)
also there’s so much delicious tension in the idea of WWX coming back to a world where the Yiling Wei/Burial Mounds are an entity, and are locked in a vicious semi-cold war with Lotus Pier (sms would Absolutely capture and torture jiang disciples as retaliation for losing his demonic cultivators) meanwhile LWJ is. still just trying to do his thing, waiting to see if wwx’s spirit ever shows up, wishing he didn’t really fucking hate everyone else who used to know wwx

thinking abt that omegaverse au someone sent in where xuanli lives but alpha jzx is in love with omega wwx who died in qiongqi path.. and jyl finds herself living a similar life to her mother. jzx coming too late to prevent zixun's army from skewering wwx with arrows. running towards the subject of his affection only to hear him sputter his last word mentioning his child. wwx was just thinking abt a-yuan in his last seconds but jzx thought wwx wanted him to take care of the child. he brought back wwx's corpse to koi tower and interrogated his father in front of everyone. a trial was held and being ever practical, jgy used the chance to reveal jgs's crime to save his skin.
before the day ended jzx let his wife know that he along with other sect leaders are descending to burial mounds. hearts broke when little a-yuan asked wen ning where his mother was. jzx carried the toddler back with him while his peers took care of the other wen remnants. by jzx's order a funeral for wwx was held in koi tower before his body is sent to lotus pier to be buried with his parents.
jzx and jyl raised wei yuan well. almost too well on jzx's part that vicious rumors swept through lanling jin of how poor madam jiang is reliving her mother's life. a husband who is hung up on a lost love and a bastard child being more favored than the legitimate one.
jin ling and wei yuan grew up close like brothers the way wwx and jc did. they travelled to lotus pier regularly where a-yuan would pray in front of his mother's tablet. jc could only bottle up his anger at how his sister and nephews' lives turn out. he chastises jzx every time they meet and yet nothing changed.
jzx is living in guilt at how he couldnt prevent the toddler of his beloved from being an orphan and overcompensated, despite a-yuan's insistence that it would do everyone better if jin dajiu act more impartial to him. jin ling grew up under the shadow of his foster brother, who is 3 years older, more talented, more proper, more popular, more perfect than he could ever dream of being. cold envy haunts his every step and yet this brother is the only one who he finds himself he could trust his whole body and soul to.
jyl lives in a mixture of guilt and scathing discontent. on one hand wwx had absolutely no hand in her predicament, yet even in death her family continued to live in his shadow. she couldnt bring herself to dislike a-yuan the way her mother disliked wwx. she couldnt bear to hear people talk abt how tragic wwx's life was, yet she struck her own son when he exploded and called wwx a whore since a-yuan didnt know who his father is.
perhaps people wouldnt think wei yuan was jzx's bastard son so much if his parentage was out in the open, but jyl didnt have the heart for a-yuan to life his life as the son of a servant and a wen dog born out of rape. then wei yuan turned 16 and jzx named him sizhui. jyl lost it and fled to lotus pier. the kids tailing her, a-yuan prostrated in front of her, willing to leave if it would make her feel better.
the boy packed his stuff and left in the middle of the night. looking for a quiet, peaceful place where he wouldnt be a target for gossip, not in his face at least, he flew to gusulan. there, a certain alpha also in love with his mother welcomed him with open arms. the man had been waiting for 13 years for any reminder of wei ying to come to him. he would take care of wei ying's son from now on.
This is a fun one. Very dramatic. JGY can keep scheming and training demonic cultivation in the basement so MXY still gets the instructions for the soul summoning ritual and gives his body to WWX.
I can see JL thinking of WWX as a homewrecker but also being super insulted that WWX could have JZX but chooses LWJ instead. JZX himself is feeling too guilty to actually try anything with WWX and JYL still isnt sure if her marriage is salvageable. JC is just angry at the world but mostly WWX for 'causing' all the problems and then running off with LWJ instead of coming home and fixing everything. WWX has a hard enough time realizing LWJ loves him, it will take JL screaming at him to figure out JZX does and he wont react well to finding out he ruined his sisters happiness.

Julekalender - 2nd December - MDZS/Lucifer crossover outline
I have yet to watch the last 1½ season, so - this gets to be set in a nebulous earlier period of the show.
1. Mazikeen is a bounty hunter. She is a very, very good bounty hunter.
2. Her latest case is a body snatcher. A serial body snatcher. As in, this person has a type - his victims are always male, ethnically Chinese or at least unspecified Asian, and always unidentified. There’s actually a concern that this body snatcher is actually a serial killer collecting his entire victims as trophies.
3. Nobody ever sees them steal the corpses. Hell, it’s almost as if the body just got up and walked away, except surveillance equipment is left suspiciously blank and any guard on the premises has to shamefully admit to having slept on their shift.
4. The mysterious corpse thief has been suspected in many, many cases, but three specifically in LA during the last year or so, which is where Mazikeen comes in - and when Dan hands over a stack of folders with this week’s John Doe’s at the city morgue, and one of them - entirely fresh, brought in this very day - matches the Body Thief’s profile to a t. Male Han Chinese, perfect in every way. Cause of death: probably impaled, possibly by a spear? Weird, but hey - it’s LA.
5. Mazikeen decides that clearly the best plan is the simplest: she’ll be spending the night at the morgue.
6. The night starts very, very boringly. Her victim-to-be is dead and in the freezer, the book she borrowed from Linda has turned out to be boring, everything is boring. And then, sometime past midnight, an eerie tune starts playing, encouraging her to sleep.
7. Mazikeen being a demon and somewhat grumpy right around now does not sleep. She does have the presence of mind to hide behind the nearest large object.
8. The man who walks in is also Chinese. In fact, he’d fit the victim profile just as perfectly as the body in freezer 7.
9. “Wen Ning?” he calls and Mazikeen startles - not at the voice, but at the responding knocking from inside the freezer. Wei Wuxian just heads straight over, passing so close she could reach out and touch him if she wanted to, and opens the freezer, helping his poor naked friend out.
10. Well, what do you know. The corpse - naked and with a great, big wound in his chest, but apart from that very attractive and quite well-endowed - is in fact about to walk right out of the morgue on his own.
11. I mean, first he’s about to put on some clothes that the living guy pulled out of a way too tiny purse. Now, that just won’t do.
12. “Care to explain what’s happening here?” leads to the corpse annoyingly squeaking and covering the interesting bits with the jeans he hasn’t had time to put on, while the living guy puts a flute to his lips and his eyes turn red as he starts playing a tune to bend the world to his will.
13. Except the Lilim are not so easily bent. They take after their mother that way.
14. The man stops playing, frowning, because that particular bit of magic should have put any human to sleep in 2 seconds flat. Hell, it should have put an elephant to sleep.
15. “Oh,” he says, face clearing and lips parting in a smile. “You’re a yao!”
16. “Explain,” she repeats, unsheathing one of her knives. She does not appreciate anybody thinking they’ve got her figured out and finding her non-threatening.
17. “Wei-gongzi’s just helping me out,” the corpse answers. “I’ve been having these narcoleptic episodes the last couple of decades - usually it’s fine, it’s not like falling asleep in awkward places will kill me. But sometimes people stumble across me, and I can’t exactly get up and leave in the middle of the poor paramedics trying to save me from dying, you know?”
18. Mazikeen involuntarily lowers her dagger again. It’s very hard to want to be threatening in the face of a slightly stuttering corpse.
19. She ends up inviting the two of them out for drinks - fortunately WWX fixed WN’s digestive system ages ago - and after winning a drinking contest with WWX and watching a very scary man in white clothes collect him, frowning at her in a manner she translates as a warning, she drags the very pretty not-technically-dead-guy home with her.
20. The next day Mazikeen sadly tells anybody who asks that, nope, she’s got no clue where the corpse went, didn’t see anything, the fucking morgue was so dull that she fell asleep. (She did fall asleep. After the third round. Even she has her limits. Wen Ning brought her breakfast in bed before round four.)
Thank you, anon, for suggesting Lucifer.
Would anybody like to suggest a fandom for December 3nd? Same rules: first fandom that I’m familiar with and which hasn’t already been done wins.

FAN FICTION: The Untamed Episode 51 "Epilogue"
As much as I love this fandom's fanfiction and fanart that depicts CQL Wangxian becoming canon, sometimes they just feel too good to be true…
So, trying to keep in the style of CQL as a show and the style of romance presented in other C-dramas, here is my attempt at answering: If censorship was no longer an issue, what would a truly realistic Wangxian reveal look like? The following is my attempt at writing a script for a hypothetical Epilogue episode! Think of it as a one-off special. This was a great way for me to try my hand at script-writing, and mimicking the style, translation, and aesthetic of the show.
This is Part 1. Enjoy!
[No content warnings]
1. EXT. A GRASSY CLIFFSIDE. DAYTIME.
We see Wei Ying playing the flute. He is playing Lan Zhan’s song.
CAMERA ON- WEI YING.
Wei Ying’s eyes are closed as he plays to the wind. He is in a different outfit than we last saw him. Then:
LZ: (Softly, Offscreen) Wei Ying.
Wei Ying stops playing. In slow motion, he lowers the flute and turns. We see him smile, an expression of pure joy.
CUT TO- WIDESHOT.
Lan Zhan is standing a distance away, his white robes shining in the sun. A soft smile is on his face. They share a long look.
CUT TO- ARIAL SHOT.
Slowly, Lan Zhan begins walking towards Wei Ying.
CUT TO- WIDESHOT.
We see Lan Zhan walk towards the camera through tall grass.
CUT TO- SECOND WIDESHOT.
The two men are seen in profile. Lan Zhan stops a few feet in front of Wei Ying. The two men face each other, drinking in the other’s face. Their song plays softly.
WY: Hanguang-Jun.
LZ: (Warmly) You’ve returned.
Wei Ying nods.
WY: I told you that I would. If the past has taught you anything, it is that I will always return to you, Hanguang-Jun.
CUT TO- LAN ZHAN.
Lan Zhan’s breath seems to catch.
CUT TO- WEI YING.
WY: (Earnestly, shyly) It is good to see you, Lan Zhan.
LZ: It is good to see you, too, Wei Ying. You look well.
WY: I am well. (Pause) And you?
LZ: (With meaning) I am well, now.
They share a long look. Wei Ying becomes shy, unsure what to say.
LZ: (Cont.) You have been gone a long time, Wei Ying.
WY: Lan Zhan, I.. (Pause. Lightly) How are things in the cultivation world? So much must have changed since I left.
Lan Zhan does not answer him.
LZ: (Gently, but firmly) Wei Ying, I didn’t expect to see you here.(Subtext: I didn’t expect to see you again.) How long will you be staying in Gusu?
Wei Ying tries to decipher Lan Zhan’s expression, then twirls his flute to avoid his gaze.
WY: (Aloof) Oh, I’m just passing through. Maybe I’ll stay a day, maybe a week, I haven’t kept track of how long I’ve been staying in any one place.
Lan Zhan looks down, softness gone. Wei Ying stops twirling the flute. There is a coldness that blooms between them. Wei Ying realizes he has said something wrong.
WY: Lan Zhan... (Pause. Change of tone) You know, I think yours is the first familiar face I have seen in many months. (He smiles coyly) Stony as it always is, I am happy it’s you that I saw first.
Little Apple pulls away suddenly.
WY: (Cont.) Ay! Except for you of course, Lil Apple. Yes, yes. So sensitive.
He playfully slaps Little Apple’s neck with the reigns and smiles. Lan Zhan says nothing. The coldness remains. Wei Ying tries again.
WY: Tell me, has the food in Cloud Recesses improved since I left?
Lan Zhan obliges the unspoken request.
LZ: If you would like to, you are welcome to come for dinner, and stay in Cloud Recesses for as long as you need to.
Wei Ying smiles softly.
WY: I would be honored to be a guest of his Excellency.
He bows sincerely.
WY: (Cont.) And anyways, even rabbit food is better than going to sleep with an empty stomach under the stars.
He laughs. An obliging smile in response.
LZ: Come, I will walk you back to Cloud Recesses. They will not let you in on your own.
Wei Ying rolls his eyes.
WY: (With affection) Your clan and their rules. Strict as ever.
Lan Zhan takes Little Apple’s reigns and begins walking, Wei Ying follows. They walk shoulder to shoulder in silence. Lan Zhan eyes the ground. Wei Ying eyes Lan Zhan. He smiles softly.
WY: It’s funny, actually. Once I realized I was near Gusu, I indeed hoped that you would find me if I played your song. Now that I know this is how you recognized me, I thought it would be appropriate that it be how you found me again. I have played it here and there- (He stops himself. Subtext: Missing you.) And well, how appropriate I find you back where I started. Don’t think that I’ve forgotten: I am still waiting to hear what you’ve decided to name this song. I’m sure I’ve given you enough time by now.
LZ: I already told you, it has long since had a name.
WY: Well, and you still won’t tell me what it is! Really, it’s unfair. We being the only two people in the world who play it, don’t you think I should know what it’s called? I may have to come up with my own name after all. I have thought of some...
He puts his flute to his chin, feigning contemplation. Lan Zhan looks like he is about to say something, but stops himself. He isn’t upset by Wei Ying’s joking, but he isn’t amused by it either.
WY: Well, maybe I won’t give mine away just yet. I must hear what you’ve come up with first and decide if it is acceptable. (Change of tone) Lan Zhan, is A-Yuan at the Cloud Recesses?
Lan Zhan shakes his head.
LZ: He is gone night hunting with Wen Ning and a few of the other cultivators. They are expected back in a week or so.
Wei Ying is visibly disappointed.
WY: That’s a shame, I was hoping to see him. Is he well?
Lan Zhan nods.
LZ: He is very well. He excels in his studies, and he has now led many night hunts. He is very like you were in skill at that age, but with a more even temperament.
WY: Ah! There was nothing wrong with my temperament! I just also knew how to have fun, that’s all. (Thinking, voiceover) Something I will need to teach A-Yuan, it seems. (Aloud) Lan Zhan, I won’t accept you spreading this type of slander to the cultivators! It’s unfair when I am not here to defend myself!
Lan Zhan smiles lightly.
WY: (Serious) But really, is he being safe? You’re not sending him into danger needlessly?
LZ: He is very capable. Rest assured: He is safe. (Subtext: I have always kept him safe for you.)
WY: Well, I guess if he is trained by Hanguang-Jun, then he must be alright. (Pause. Affronted) Now really, Lan Zhan, I have been gone for how long and you have yet to ask me a single question about where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing. I’m beginning to wonder whether you even missed me at all.
He bumps his shoulder into Lan Zhan.
LZ: (Obligingly) Tell me, where have you been, and what have you seen on your travels these past months, Wei Ying?
Wei Ying smiles and launches into stories we do not get to hear.
CUT TO- ARIAL SHOT.
The two men walk side by side across the spanning mountain landscape.
FADE TO BLACK.
------------
2. EXT.- SILENCE HALL. NIGHT.
FADE IN- A NIGHT SKY.
We see a shot of white orchids in bloom in the foreground. Lan Zhan walks into frame and crosses the threshold of the hall, followed by Wei Ying.
CUT TO- CLOSE UP OF WEI YING.
He looks around, pensive.
FOCUS- THE BED.
We see a flashback to Wei Ying as he first wakes up in Cloud Recesses after 16 years. We see his view of Lan Zhan playing the guqin.
FOCUS- THE TABLE.
We see a flashback to Lan Zhan, pouring him a drink. Lan Zhan looks up at him softly.
FOCUS- THE DOORWAY IN THE ADJACENT ROOM.
We see a flashback to the two men standing side by side in the snow.
BACK TO- PRESENT.
Wei Ying smiles softly at these memories. Lan Zhan is opening a cabinet door across the room. He pulls out 2 bottles of Emperor’s Smile.
WY: (Surprised) Ah! Since when does the honorable Hanguang-Jun keep liquor stored at Cloud Recesses? Imagine the stir it would cause if your disciples knew you were hiding liquor in your quarters. Why do you have that here anyways? Don’t tell me that your tolerance for liquor has improved these past months, I won’t believe it.
Lan Zhan ignores him and instead pours a cup. He places it at the seat across from his. Wei Ying understands the invitation and sits down. He lifts the cup and smells it deeply. Lan Zhan pours himself a cup of tea.
WY: You know, in all my wanderings, far and wide, I sampled many hundreds of local drinks. Not one of them compares to the Emperor’s Smile of Gusu.
He smiles and downs the cup in one gulp. Lan Zhan refills it. Wei Ying lifts the cup again.
WY: A toast.
LZ: To what?
WY: To you! You have gained quite a reputation these past months, you know. There is not a place I traveled where the praises of his Excellency were not sung… (A question) Who I hear has also been appointed as the new clan leader of Lan…
Lan Zhan looks down, but nods. Wei Ying is momentarily surprised, then sighs.
WY: (With feeling) Along with the contents of this cup, you have become a mark of the true greatness of the Lan Clan of Gusu. (Raising his cup, with a smile) So, a toast!
He downs it. Lan Zhan smiles, pleased with the compliment, and drinks his tea. He refills Wei Ying’s cup again.
WY: (Shaking his head) Clan Leader Lan... Lan Zhan, why on Earth has your brother stepped down?
LZ: After the events at the Guanyin temple, Brother has been overwhelmed with guilt. He feels that he should have perceived Jin Guangyao’s true nature, and that many evils could have been avoided if his judgement had not been clouded. (Pause) He has confined himself to the cold ice pond as penance.
WY: (Shocked) The cold ice pond? For how long?
LZ: He is not being held. He will contemplate as long as he needs to.
WY: But... How could he have known? Jin Guangyao was a snake. No one perceived him, not even his own family. Your brother is being too hard on himself.
Lan Zhan lifts the teapot and begins pouring himself more tea.
LZ: Nevertheless, he holds himself accountable. He was Jin Guangyao’s sworn brother. If he was not responsible for stopping his evil, who was?
Lan Zhan stops pouring the tea, realizing the parallels between his brother’s situation and theirs of the past. This is not lost on Wei Ying. A shyness blooms between them. They meet each other’s eyes briefly before looking away. Each man takes a drink.
WY: (After a long moment) Will it be painful?
Lan Zhan looks up, surprised. His eyes ask what Wei Ying knows. Once he realizes, he sighs, looks down, and nods solemnly.
LZ: He will suffer, but he will survive.
WY: (Shyly) Your brother told me about your confinement there. Ah- But don’t be angry with him! I made him tell me. Besides, he knew you would never tell, no matter how I may try and force you. (Pause) I was gone, Lan Zhan. It wasn’t necessary for you to suffer so.
LZ: I accepted my punishment willingly. My conscious is clear.
WY: (After a long moment) 3 years there, and 300 whips. And... that brand on your chest... How did you come by that? Your brother did not say.
Lan Zhan seemingly ignores him.
LZ: There is other news you should know. The Su clan has been dissolved. Its members must repent and accept punishment in order to return to their parent clans, or else face exile. Also, the Jin clan has assumed new leadership.
WY: (Brightly) Ah? Jin Rulan? How is my nephew faring?
LZ: The memory of Jin Guangyao is still fresh. The Jin clan, and the Nie clan, must work to rebuild their reputations and their leadership. Clan Leader Jiang has been aiding Clan Leader Jin much. (With a dry smile) Several times, they have even accepted my counsel.
Wei Ying lets out a disbelieving laugh.
WY: Jiang Cheng accepting counsel from you? Things have certainly changed since I left.
He shakes his head and takes a drink. Lan Zhan lets himself smile.
WY: So, does that mean that my nephew is no longer the self-important peacock he’s always been?
LZ: He is still young, but with guidance he has shown that he is willing to learn.
WY: (Shaking his head) Clan Leader Jin. (With emotion) If only my Senior Sister could see it. I hope she would be proud.
LZ: (Earnestly) She would be proud. (Subtext: She would be proud of you.)
Wei Ying meets Lan Zhan’s eyes. Wei Ying smiles, eyes wet. There is a lull in the conversation. The tone then shifts. Now is the heart of the matter.
LZ: (Softly) Wei Ying, why did you really come back to Cloud Recesses?
There is emotion behind this question which Wei Ying would rather avoid.
WY: I told you, I am just passing through. Of course, I could not pass by without a taste of Emperor’s Smile!
He looks at the cup and smiles playfully. Lan Zhan is stony-faced.
LZ: It is getting late. I will let you rest.
He starts to rise, but Wei Ying grabs his sleeve and pulls him back down.
WY: Ah, now Lan Zhan! Don’t be like that! Fine, I will be honest with you. (Pause. Change of tone) You’re right. I wasn’t just passing by here. I came here because... I wanted to.
LZ: (Firmly) Why?
WY: Why are you upset? If you would rather me leave Cloud Recesses, I will go.
LZ: No. I…(Pause) I want you to tell me the truth.
WY: This is the truth. I came back here because I wanted to. (He sighs) In my travels, I went further than any cultivator before me has ever dared to go. I traveled far beyond the Burial Mounds, so far that I did not see another soul for weeks. So far, that I encountered people who speak in foreign tongues with foreign faces. I saw lands and peoples I had never imagined. But… (Pensively) I didn’t expect it. No matter how far I went, I found myself... missing. Jiang Cheng, A-Yuan, Wen Ning... Most of all, you, Lan Zhan.
Lan Zhan is still stony faced. Wei Ying considers him closely.
WY: What is wrong?
LZ: But you are just passing by. You would leave again so soon.
Wei Ying does not reply to this. He looks down.
LZ: (With emotion) When you departed from Gusu, I thought it unlikely that we would meet again. I chose to take on the duties of Excellency, as clan leader... (Pause) I imagined what life you would choose to lead.
He trails off. These words hang between them heavily.
WY: (Confused) And yet you still let me go?
They share a long look. Lan Zhan’s eyes say what his mouth cannot.
WY: (Gently) Lan Zhan... I understand. But I was not gone this time. I promised you that we would meet again. (Pause) I even wished for you to come with me, remember?
LZ: I do remember. But it was my duty to stay. (Pause) Where will you go from here?
WY: I’m not sure. I had half a mind to visit Clan leader Jiang and the ancestral shrine in Yungmeng... Now I must check on Jin Ling in Jinlintai...
LZ: And then?
Wei Ying falters. He takes a drink. Lan Zhan sighs.
LZ: Why do you lie?
WY: Ah? How do I lie?
LZ: If you have nowhere you plan to go, why do you say you are only passing through?
Wei Ying examines his cup, feigning aloofness.
WY: Well, so what if I have nowhere to go yet? I will simply go where I please.
LZ: (Angry) Why must you always joke about these things?
Lan Zhan stands abruptly and strides to the door. His back is to the camera.
WY: Lan Zhan!
LZ: (Cutting him off) You cast those who care about you aside as if they mean nothing. Even after everything that has happened, you still have not learned how your actions affect others.
Wei Ying puts his cup down.
WY: (With growing anger) And what about those who have cast me aside? Every person. Every single person who has claimed to love me has at one time hated me, despised me, or feared me. What kind of devotion do I owe to anyone then? Whom has cast off whom? (Pause) Even you fought against me back then.
CUT TO- CLOSEUP.
This hits a nerve. We see Lan Zhan’s fist clench behind his back. His only response. Wei Ying stands and approaches Lan Zhan.
MEDIUM CLOSEUP- WEI YING.
Wei Ying is seen just over Lan Zhan’s left shoulder, both facing the open doorway. Wei Ying is in focus, Lan Zhan out. Lan Zhan’s face is out of frame.
WY:(Pained) Lan Zhan, can you really blame me for wanting to be on my own? In this world, what companionship can I hope to keep? At one time, I believed that the Jiang clan were my family, and yet they cast me aside when I tried to do what I thought was right- what I know was right- all in the name of saving face with the other clans. I believed that the Wen clan survivors would be my family, and yet they were murdered by those who hated them without reason- who hated me. I was resurrected into the body of a man whose family despised him and tortured him to the point of sacrificing his own spiritual cognition in the name of revenge. (He considers stopping, but continues) At one time… I even believed that you could be my family, Lan Zhan.
CUT TO- CLOSE UP.
Lan Zhan’s fist is still clenched.
BACK TO- WEI YING.
WY: (Cont. Sadly) And yet you have said it yourself: You have duties to the other clans now, to your own clan, to your pupils, and to yourself. What freedom does that leave you? Hm? Lan Zhan…
CUT TO- MEDIUM SHOT.
We see the back of Lan Zhan’s left shoulder. He trembles as we hear:
WY: (Cont.) I would not have you sacrifice your reputation, nor your doctrine, to stay by my side.
BACK TO- WEI YING.
WY: (Cont.) I may no longer be the hated and feared Yiling Patriarch, but I will never hold a place of honor in this world. Not like you. (Pause. Desolate) I am a clan of one, Lan Zhan. That is my destiny. What roots… what could I possibly rely on in all this?
We still do not get to see Lan Zhan’s face, only his back as Wei Ying looks at him. His eyes are filled with grief. He looks down.
CUT TO- WIDESHOT.
We see the two men standing in the doorway. The Black facing the White. White orchids bloom in the foreground.
CUT TO- CLOSEUP OF LAN ZHAN.
We finally see his face, and it is streaked with tears. He is trembling with anger... among other emotions.
LZ: (Quietly, with emotion) You do not get to decide who loves you, Wei Ying.
We see him swiftly turn, we think he is going to attack.
CUT TO- CLOSEUP OF WEI YING, REACTION.
CUT TO- MEDIUM CLOSE-UP.
Both men are centered in the frame, in profile. In a swift second, Lan Zhan turns, grabs Wei Ying, and kisses him. Roughly. Angrily. His brow is furrowed, eyes closed, hand tense. He is trembling. This is not the fight we thought was coming.
CUT TO- WEI YING.
We see Wei Ying’s face. He is shocked. He does not pull away. His eyes are open, glued to Lan Zhan. This is the moment Lan Zhan, and the audience, has waited for. The moment lingers as their theme plays. They do not move.
Lan Zhan finally breaks the kiss, immediately turning and striding away. We do not get to see his expression as he goes. We are left with only Wei Ying’s stunned expression in the frame.
CUT TO- WIDESHOT.
Wei Ying is left standing stunned, frozen, alone, in the doorway. Lan Zhan is already gone.

33. an uncomfortable month [ao3]
When Wei Wuxian came back to Cloud Recesses, he’d been excited.
He missed Sizhui and Wen Ning and having a reliable place to sleep and bathe, but mainly he missed Lan Zhan. He’d been so excited to hang on him again, to trick him into staying up past curfew by talking for hours and it was simply rude to fall asleep while someone was talking, to catch those moments when he smiled. He missed them together, whatever that meant and in whatever capacity he was allowed to have it in.
However, he hadn’t expected it to be so… weird. Awkward, maybe, was a better word. Lan Zhan was, for the most part, the same, but he was always so busy and so Wei Wuxian had to entertain himself. To make matters worse, apparently, people thought he was the great Hanguang-Jun’s ward. At first it’d been funny, but now it was simply annoying.
“Lan Zhan,” he whined, pouting and squishing his face against Lan Zhan’s arm. He didn’t slow down his pace or even accommodate Wei Wuxian’s affections, so he took the hint and stood up straight. He rolled his shoulders, shaking away that little bud that was beginning to blossom inside him that did nothing but remind him that he was unwanted. He was hoping to get rid of it before he couldn’t ignore it. “Lan Zhan, what did you tell them? I’ve told three separate people that I’m not your ward and not a single one of them believed me.”
“Mn.”
“Mn,” Wei Wuxian mimicked, rolling his eyes, “What does that mean?”
“I have said nothing to anyone about my relationship to Wei Ying,” he said.
“Yeah, including me,” Wei Wuxian grumbled softly. Lan Wangji tilted his head slightly in his direction as if listening and Wei Wuxian managed a laugh, petting his arm. “I’m teasing, Lan Zhan. So, what, do I just let them think that? What if rumors start about my age, though? Aren’t wards much younger?”
“Let them come to their own conclusion,” Lan Zhan said firmly. Wei Wuxian’s face felt warm at the implication. Though, maybe there were no implications and his mind was just a bit naughty.
His mind had definitely been awfully naughty these days.
“So, you won’t mind what they say when I stay in the Jingshi long past curfew?” Wei Wuxian asked. Lan Zhan didn’t answer which meant he didn’t mind. Wei Wuxian leaned closer. “But what will they say if I don’t leave at all?”
Lan Zhan came to a halt, turning to him. Wei Wuxian’s eyes widened a bit, shocked he was getting that much of a reaction. Lan Zhan hadn’t really given him much of a reaction since he came back. It was all very cordial. Plain. Wei Wuxian never overstayed his welcome at the Jingshi because of it, regardless of how much he wanted to take a nap in his bed again. It was much warmer than the guest rooms.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said, staring at him. His eyes slowly grazed over his face and then further down and Wei Wuxian felt a bit lightheaded. “Are your rooms not satisfactory?”
“No,” he said. Lan Zhan blinked and then nodded before Wei Wuxian’s brain processed anything at all. “No! I mean, yes, I mean, they’re fine. Fine.”
Lan Zhan took a slow, even breath. “Wei Ying.”
“I suppose I was under the impression that I would be staying in the Jingshi,” Wei Wuxian said slowly, stupidly, but it didn’t matter. He didn’t know how long Lan Zhan planned to let him stay here, but it couldn’t be too much longer. “You know, like we did last time.”
“Wei Ying was here under pressing circumstances last time,” Lan Zhan pointed out, his eyebrows pulled together just enough to show his confusion. It was such a small change from his normal expression that Wei Wuxian barely caught it. “Wei Ying deserves a space of his own for however long he will be here.”
And it was so sweet that Wei Wuxian didn’t have the heart to tell him that he didn’t really mind sharing if it meant sharing with Lan Zhan. In fact, he’d much rather that. If they were in the same room, then they would at least see each other every day without Wei Wuxian having to hunt him down.
But Lan Zhan had been very thoughtful and Wei Wuxian smiled.
“Oh. I suppose I misunderstood,” he said. Lan Zhan blinked slowly and he took a step forward.
“Wei Ying can stay as long as he desires. And he can have whatever he desires. If he wishes to stay in the Jingshi, he is welcome,” Lan Zhan said. Wei Wuxian nodded slowly in understanding, but his cheeks just started to grow warm and he found himself laughing for no reason. It wasn’t funny. He did it anyway.
“Silly Lan Zhan, you don’t want to give me your house! I am just a ward, don’t you remember?” Wei Wuxian laughed. Lan Zhan blinked, but then nodded his head once.
Lan Zhan continued to walk and Wei Wuxian followed as they made their way to the open courtyard where young disciples were practicing sword forms. They were all around 13 or 14 and greeted Lan Zhan with a warm ‘Hanguang-Jun’ and then quickly averted their eyes from Wei Wuxian. They hadn’t done that before he left, even when they knew he was the Yiling Laozu. He put a little more space between him and Lan Zhan, just to be safe.
The days continued on like this, Lan disciples averting their eyes and Lan Zhan just being eerily calm. Not to say he wasn’t always calm, but he seemed almost sedated. Wei Wuxian wasn’t sure how to handle that. He would press his luck and stay later in the Jingshi, but he was never told to leave even as Lan Wangji went about his business to prepare for bed. It was like he didn’t care about anything but work. Wei Wuxian felt like he’d missed a step.
“A-Yuan!” Wei Wuxian called, walking a bit faster than was Lan appropriate to catch up with him. He was the only one who’s behavior made sense. Sweet and righteous and adorable.
“Wei-qianbei,” Lan Sizhui said warmly, bowing politely. Then he stood up, paused a moment, and went in for a short hug. That was another thing that made sense. He always gave him hugs when no one else was around. Wei Wuxian gave them freely right back.
“A-Yuan, could I ask you something? Between you and I, of course,” Wei Wuxian said, trying to keep his voice diplomatic as they continued to walk. It made him smile so big his eyes turned into little crescents. Adorable, truly.
“Yes, Wei-qianbei, anything.”
“Did something happen while I was gone? The Lans have never been exactly fond of me, but viewing me as Hanguang-Jun’s ward and being too awkward to even look my way is definitely new. Did a rumor about me spread? I haven’t heard any,” Wei Wuxian said, tapping his nose thoughtfully. He’d tried to come up with reasons and failed each time. “Even your Hanguang-Jun has been weird.”
“Ah,” Lan Sizhui said, giving a tense little smile and looking away quickly as his cheeks began to burn red. Wei Wuxian stopped walking, putting his hand on his arm.
“A-Yuan,” he said, using the same tone of voice he’d used when he would tell him to spit out whatever he’d shoved in his mouth 16 years ago now. It was enough to make him tilt his head back in Wei Wuxian’s direction.
“Hanguang-Jun just… made it very clear that you were not to be disrespected,” he said carefully. Wei Wuxian’s eyebrows furrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Lan Sizhui pushed his hair off his neck and looked around. Wei Wuxian put his hands on his hips and waited for an explanation. Hanguang-Jun had been acting strange as well. What the hell could he have possibly done?
“Have you been to the Jingshi?” Lan Sizhui asked quietly.
“Of course I have.”
“Then have you not… noticed?”
“Noticed what?”
Lan Sizhui’s face flushed again and he shyly looked at Wei Wuxian which only furthered his confusion. He went to the Jingshi nearly every day. Had he missed something that obvious?
“Perhaps you should ask Hanguang-Jun. It doesn’t feel like my place to say,” Sizhui said. Wei Wuxian scrunched up his nose and sighed.
“Everything is so difficult around here,” he said, earning a small smile from Sizhui. Wei Wuxian reached out to smooth his forehead ribbon carefully. “Fine, I suppose I’ll ask.”
“Alright, Wei-qianbei.”
“Once I straighten that, we’ll address this Wei-qianbei nonsense. Am I not worthy enough to be your Xian-gege anymore?” Wei Wuxian asked, enjoying the sound of his laughter. That made sense. If A-Yuan was laughing and smiling with him, then things couldn’t be that bad. He was sure of it.
“Alright, Xian-gege.”
Wei Wuxian spent his day as normal as he could, though he was already prepared to pack up if need be. He would ask Lan Zhan what he’d missed and see what he said, but he didn’t want to be in a place where everyone wouldn’t even look his way anymore. It was too uncomfortable.
He didn’t want to leave Lan Zhan and he wouldn’t if he didn’t have to, but it was beginning to feel like he had to.
As the day began to wind to an end and it was around the time that Lan Wangji would be retiring to the Jingshi, Wei Wuxian made a point to beat him there. He let himself in and took a look around, trying to notice if there was anything amiss. Nothing stood out.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said as he entered in complete silence. Wei Wuxian spun around to face him, smiling as innocent as he could.
Lan Zhan eyed him skeptically, not buying it for a moment and yet not calling him out either. It was little things like that that reminded him that Lan Zhan was a grown man now and not a hot-headed teenager. Not that he’d ever admit he was hot-headed, but still.
“Lan Zhan! I was waiting for you, let’s eat,” Wei Wuxian said, coming close and plucking the tray of food out of Lan Zhan’s hands. He brought it to the table and knelt on one side. Lan Zhan was still watching him closely as he placed Bichen on its stand and came closer.
Lan Zhan knelt at the other side of the table and poured tea for the both of them. Wei Wuxian smiled in his gratitude and downed it. They ate in silence which seemed to be an immediate warning flag for Lan Zhan if the way he was staring said anything. Granted, Wei Wuxian never listened to that particular Lan rule before.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said softly as their meal ended. It was around the time he usually started moving around the room to prepare for bed. And it was the night he usually took a bath, so typically he would go to the other side of the privacy screen and disrobe while Wei Wuxian talked through his body lighting on fire from the inside. “Is there something wrong?”
“Ah, why would something be wrong?” Wei Wuxian laughed. Really, he just wasn’t quite ready to ask what happened after he left to travel last time. What had made all the Lan disciples look away and spread rumors that he was a ward. He still couldn’t get over that. A ward! How could they possibly think he was a ward?
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan repeated.
Wei Wuxian sighed and let his shoulders sink a bit, his eyes going anywhere but in Lan Zhan’s direction as he fiddled with his robes. It shouldn’t be so hard to ask.
“Lan Zhan,” he said, “What changed while I was gone? I asked A-Yuan, but, you know, just like his Hanguang-Jun, he’s all too respectful to tell me what is yours to say. So all I ask is what happened to make everyone avoid me. More than they avoided me when they knew I was just the Yiling Laozu which, honestly, is impressive.”
Lan Zhan stared at him for a long moment and Wei Wuxian would’ve thought he was just annoyed by the question if not for the way his ears were slowly burning brighter and brighter with each breath. Wei Wuxian tilted his head.
“Lan-er-gege, what did you do?” Wei Wuxian asked, a bit of teasing in his voice if only to lighten the tension.
“My sect will be ordered to stop avoiding you. I apologize for their lack of respect,” Lan Zhan said. Wei Wuxian rolled his eyes.
“Aiya, Lan Zhan! You know that isn’t it! Now, tell me,” Wei Wuxian said. Lan Zhan took a deep breath and stared at him. Wei Wuxian pushed himself up on his knees and walked on them over to him. He sat down right beside him, their knees nearly touching. “Is it something bad? Would it be easier for me to leave?”
That got his attention and Lan Zhan looked at him quickly, his eyes sharp and determined. They both knew Lan Zhan wouldn’t keep him here if he didn’t want to, but Wei Wuxian felt a rush of warmth at the idea that Lan Zhan would still give a lot to make him want to be here. To feel welcome in his home. That was nice.
“Alright,” Lan Zhan said, his hands clutching his robes, “I had a larger bed constructed.”
“Ah?” Wei Wuxian breathed, eyebrows coming together in confusion. He looked over his shoulder to the bed and, yes, maybe it was a bit larger than when he slept in it last, but it wasn’t that much larger. Just… big enough for two. “You’re… getting married?” Wei Wuxian asked slowly, dread poking at his gut and against those quiet sounds of ‘you’re not welcome, no one wants you here’ pried into his mind.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan breathed, looking some mix of fond and exasperated. Wei Wuxian could hear his heart in his ears.
“What does a larger bed have to do with me?” he asked. Lan Zhan slowly closed his eyes. Wei Wuxian’s eyes widened when he realized what the Lans were thinking, what they must be assuming he and their brilliant Chief Cultivator were doing in that large bed. “Ah! And they’re calling me a ward? Is that to save their own thoughts? How shameless of them, Lan Zhan.”
“And not shameless of me?” he asked, tilting his head. Wei Wuxian blinked and then nearly melted.
“Oh. Lan Zhan,” he teased, gently pushing his shoulder. Wei Wuxian’s insides were similar to the way he felt when he knew he was naked behind a privacy screen‒entirely on fire to the point he was almost dizzy. “Were your disciples not just assuming, Lan Zhan? Well, that would explain why A-Yuan got so flustered when I asked. Ah! You are shameless. But, don’t worry, shamelessness looks very nice on you.”
Lan Zhan’s smile slowly appeared and that was nice. Similar to A-Yuan’s, if Lan Zhan was smiling then nothing could ever really be wrong.
“Then why would you give me my own quarters? And why would you act so scandalized when I asked why I wasn’t living in the Jingshi? Lan Zhan, you’re terrible at courting!” Wei Wuxian pointed out. However, saying the word courting out loud when he was speaking about the two of them made a little too obvious what was going on and he leaned closer to Lan Zhan to keep his mind busy. “And still your disciples were thinking things that hadn’t even happened yet.”
“Yet?” Lan Zhan asked, ignoring his questions that were honestly rather important. But, well, he could get those answers later he supposed.
“Yet,” Wei Wuxian repeated, eyes scanning his face. He was so handsome. All of those naughty thoughts that Wei Wuxian had shoved away out of respect came back to the surface very quickly. “Lan Zhan.”
When Wei Wuxian found himself sprawled half-naked on the bed within the Jingshi, he didn’t finally notice the size difference.

After roughly 20 hours of painting, I finally finished woohoo!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Okay, backstory: So, @byallaccountsitdoesntmakesense and I were talking about NingXian (or rather, since I'd gotten sucked into NingXian Land through the two fics I wrote, I needed someone there with me and spammed her with NingXian moments from the drama to trap her with me 😛) when she suddenly brought up the thought that Wen Ning is one of the only people who could calm Wei Wuxian down when he's in full-on Yiling Laozu mode, since he's so strong as a fierce corpse.
And then. AND THEN she has the audacity to bring up the scene from Avatar The Last Airbender where Katara calms down Full Avatar Mode Aang, which OF COURSE put some NingXian pictures in my head! 😤
Originally, I was just planning on one painting, but you know, your creativity takes things to a whole other level sometimes without you intending it to, so what was supposed to be just one painting became a four-page comic. 🤪
My thought behind it was, what if at the final pre-timejump showdown in Nightless City, when Wei Wuxian is going off the rails and plays the flute, Wen Ning (whom he presumed dead) is imprisoned in Qishan and hears the flute like he does 16 years later in ep2, and breaks free? He rushes to Wei Wuxian and, well, you can see for yourself what happens. Hope you like it. 😊

They love each other, Your Honor. ♥️
Would it have changed anything? Would JYL still have died? Would WWX still have jumped off the cliff? Who knows. 🥲

That time WWX got reincarnated as a goat; or why nobody could raise him from the dead for 13 years
(set in Untamed verse, where nobody dies but WWX does disappear for 16 years)
WWX’s fall from the cliff was - dramatic, yes. But everything had gone so very out of control - Jin Zixuan dead, at Wen Ning’s hands and therefore his own; the whole Nightless City up in arms because of him; everything going out of his control; the attack on the Jiang sect from the flute that wasn’t him; his shijie -
His shijie -
Anyway, when Jiang Cheng struck the rock next to his hand, he’d known what he needed to do. He needed to let go - to fall -
To...get caught in some sort of spiritual fluctuation and transformed into a spirit that was then trapped inside the body of a goat?
(As far as he can tell, the mountain goat in question had been quietly cultivating for a long time on the hills of the Nightless City, and had the bad timing of reaching its breakthrough just as the fighting broke out above. It hadn’t survived the breakthrough - but it had managed to yank in Wei Wuxian’s unstable spiritual consciousness.)
And now...he’s a goat.
Well.
Now what?
Not much, it turns out. Goats, Wei Wuxian finds, don’t do very much, provided they stay away from hungry cultivators, famished after a hard battle. Grass is also much tastier in this form, though that seems to be true for just about everything; he’s able to fill his belly from eating lots of things. Grass, weeds, carcasses of small animals, clothing...
Jiang Cheng, covered in rock dust and exhausted after another day of fruitless searching for Wei Wuxian (his brother or his body, he wasn’t sure which he’d prefer to find), a search that had by now gone on for several months, stared at him.
Maybe, on second thought, Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have started gnawing on Jiang Cheng’s spare set of robes.
Why is it always the second thought, he wonders. It’s never the first thought. This is why I get into trouble. Jiang Cheng is going to kill and eat me.
Jiang Cheng does not, in fact, kill and eat him.
He brings him home, instead.
“...Sect Leader Jiang?” one of Jiang Cheng’s new subordinates says cautiously. “Is that - a goat?”
“It is,” Jiang Cheng said. “I caught it.”
He had, too. Using an immortal-binding net, the wasteful scoundrel.
“Is it...for dinner?”
“No, I’m keeping it,” Jiang Cheng said, and rubbed his face. “I miss having something around to keep me company and - and it can’t be dogs. So, a goat.”
That’s pathetic, Wei Wuxian marveled. That’s so sad. I’m crying. Do not adopt a goat, Jiang Cheng. You can do better than a goat!
“...is this because of what the last young lady said right before you were blacklisted from the matchmakers?”
Or maybe you can’t. How did you get blacklisted?! Can you do nothing without me? Have I not taught you the art of flirting - no, actually, I didn’t, that’s on me. Still!
“It is not,” Jiang Cheng said, in the tone of voice that suggested it really was. “Anyway, take the goat, clean it, and tie it to something in the courtyard, then get it something to eat that isn’t my clothing.”
The subordinate struggled for a moment, then gave up and accepted it. “Yes, Sect Leader Jiang. Is there anything else?”
“No,” Jiang Cheng said, then frowned. “Actually, I should think of a name.”
Nooooooo!
That’s it, Wei Wuxian is running away to the Cloud Recesses.

what i say: i’m fine
what i mean: you ever think about how xiao xingchen and song lan were best friends and were ready to start a sect together based not on blood but on common values, but then xiao xingchen gave song lan both of his eyes out of guilt because xue yang blinded song lan in order to get revenge on xiao xingchen and so he felt responsible for song lans blindness, and xiao xingchen, when song lan in a moment of grief rejected him, respected song lan’s wishes and left to live on his own, then one day while living in yi city willingly let a-qing take what little money he had in his wallet then let her live with him because she was just a child with no family and he thought she was blind and so he felt her struggle, and on the way to his home rescued some random injured man off the side of the road, who by complete coincidence turned out to be xue yang, carried him to where they lived and treated his injuries all while being completely blind, allowed him to stay as long as he wished, and xue yang still wanted to get revenge on him and so tricked him into killing a bunch of innocent people but after a few months grew to genuinely care about xiao xingchen even though he wouldn’t admit it to himself and stopped his revenge, just lived domestically with him for 3 years, defended him against people who took advantage of his blindness, screwed with him and made him laugh, and xiao xingchen never asked him for his name or how he ended up injured so badly, not in the 3 years they lived together, because "i also have things i'd rather not be asked about," but they still became close enough that they told each other their worst memories, for xue yang his traumatic childhood spent on the streets with no family, and for xiao xingchen being rejected by song lan, but then song lan finally tracks down xiao xingchen after 3 years of searching for him to tell him that he didn’t mean to reject him, that it wasn’t his fault, and finds xue yang and xiao xingchen living together and knows that xue yang has been lying to him, tries to kill xue yang but ends up getting his tongue cut out and turned into a walking corpse so that xiao xingchen mistakenly kills him, and as song lan is dying he raises his sword trying to let xiao xingchen feel his name on the blade and let xiao xingchen know that it's him, but at the last minute drops his sword because he can't bear to let xiao xingchen know, but then xiao xingchen finds out xue yang's identity and stabs him, but it’s only a shallow wound because he can’t bring himself to actually kill xue yang, and he tells xue yang that he’s too disgusting, but xue yang just fires back and tells him about all the innocent people he’s tricked xiao xingchen into killing, including song lan, who xue yang is now controlling like wen ning, even though he cares about xiao xingchen, even though the 3 years they spent together were the best years of his life, even though he deeply wishes for someone to care about him and understand him, because it's too late and his deeds are just too bad, because he's never been treated with kindness by anyone but xiao xingchen, and that kindness was built upon a lie, because he never got to learn that he can earn kindness by just being kind, thinks that the only thing he can do is bring people down to his level, and so he tells xiao xingchen that he can’t leave him because he’s killed innocent people so he’s not in a position to judge him, but then xiao xingchen kills himself, and song lan, completely under xue yang's control, still reacts to xiao xingchen's anguished scream, and xue yang loses the only light in his life, and when he can’t resurrect xiao xingchen because his soul has shattered from all the pain he was in, screams and cries in agony, then puts the fragments of xiao xingchen's soul in a spirit trapping pouch and spends the next 8 years searching for a way to bring him back, and when he finds out that wei wuxian has been resurrected, begs him to bring xiao xingchen back even as wei wuxian tells him that he can’t do anything about it, screams at him to give the pouch back when wei wuxian takes it from him, tells wei wuxian that he only wants to bring xiao xingchen back to mess with him more even as wei wuxian points out the overwhelming evidence that xue yang actually does care about him, and a-qing, who lived with xue yang and xiao xingchen during those 3 years and saw everything that happened between them, who got blinded for real and had her tongue cut out by xue yang after witnessing xiao xingchen’s death, who stayed in yi city for the 8 years after that, does everything she can to tell wei wuxian what happened, risks her life helping wei wuxian and lan wangji kill xue yang because she wants justice for xiao xingchen, gets stabbed by xue yang right as xue yang is stabbed, dies just a teenager who never got to have a childhood, and xue yang, as he lies on the ground in the last moments of his life, reminisces about xiao xingchen leaving candy next to his bed every morning as dies with a smile on his face, holding in his hand the last piece of candy xiao xingchen gave him 8 years ago which by now has long rotted away, and song lan, who xue yang was controlling and forced to commit many misdeeds against his will, is freed by wei wuxian and deals the finishing blow on xue yang, but now has nothing to live for because xiao xingchen is gone and he never got to say the words he wanted to say, and when wei wuxian gives him shuanghua, and the pouch with xiao xingchen's soul, which he takes with trembling hands, declares that he’s going to "roam the world with shuanghua and exorcise evil beings alongside xingchen," and walks off alone, while wei wuxian and lan wangji remember watching xiao xingchen and song lan walk off together over 16 years ago and realize that they are so lucky to have gotten a second chance together where they can clear all their misunderstandings and live happily, a second chance that xiao xingchen and song lan never get

Follow up fic-related post to my Untamed primer, for those who specifically read this whole thing in order to be able to read my fanfiction! Firstly, I’m flattered. Y’all are amazing. Secondly, here’s a handy dandy list of my fics that might help you get started. (There’s tons and tons of great fanfics in this fandom, though, so you should explore if you feel so inclined!)
First of all, um, I feel compelled to write a disclaimer about all my Xiyao fic lmao. Writing the last two sections of this I was like ‘ugh, Jin Guangyao is the worst’ but like ... he wasn’t always? It feels weird to say, but I ship Lan Xichen with Meng Yao but not Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao. Meng Yao was genuinely treated very poorly all his life and had legitimate reasons to be bitter and resentful, but he didn’t turn into a monster until after his father got a hold of him. I know that not everybody will agree with that! But I just want to say, after writing those last two chunks I wanted to clarify, yes, I write a ton of Xiyao, but it is all based around the idea that although Meng Yao is morally ambiguous and can absolutely be ruthless when necessary, with actual love and support he wouldn’t end up being so terrible, and I love the idea of turning all that conniving cleverness for good instead of evil.
Anyway, moving on!
I’ve written two fanfics that are complete AU, fusions with other media. These might help you get used to reading in the fandom without worrying about all the plot nuances and politics and such.
Like a House on Fire – loose fusion with 9-1-1, characters as first responders, Wangxian and Xiyao
The Weight of the World – fusion with Pacific Rim, Wangxian and Xiyao
Here are the others, by canon divergence point. Worth pointing out, I have actually only written one fic that take place in the latter half of the show (in fact, it’s post canon). Although some of my fics have young Wen Yuan or Jin Ling in them, I don’t generally deal with the 16 year gap because it’s just too damn depressing for me. So sadly, I don’t really write about the juniors. The juniors are great! And I’m sure there are great fics about them! But I’m invested in fix-it fic, which means making sure that 16-year-gap doesn’t happen.
Also probably worth pointing out: the older the fics are, the more likely I was to make factual errors in them. Like in my first fic, I didn’t realize Meng Yao’s mother was dead, because it’s never explicitly mentioned, and in several of my earlier fics I got the pieces of yin iron confused all to hell and back lol. Be kind. XD
Canon diverges prior to or right at the beginning of the timeline:
An Atypical Courtship – Meng Yao becomes a prostitute after his mother dies. Additional bonus AU because Wen Ruohan isn’t evil and there’s no war because I didn’t feel like dealing with it. Mainly Xiyao, background Wangxian.
The Third Young Master of the Qishan Wen – Wei Wuxian is adopted by Wen Qing and Wen Ning’s family, instead of the Jiang sect. This might actually be a good one to start with as it covers almost the entire canon (pre-death canon) but just slightly to the left. Wangxian, Xiyao, Chengqing.
somewhere to belong (WIP!) – Meng Yao stays in Cloud Recesses for the lecture and makes friends. 3zun (the pairing name for Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen/Meng Yao) and background Wangxian.
Canon diverges prior to the Sunshot Campaign:
hope dangling by a string – Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian end up psychically connected and it prevents a whole host of misunderstandings. Also covers a lot of canon but slightly to the left. Wangxian and Chengqing.
Canon diverges after the Sunshot Campaign:
No More Masks – Meng Yao isn’t legitimized and goes to live at Cloud Recesses after the war. If you want to know why I’m obsessed with Xiyao, this is the fic to read as it’s the one I wrote to specifically indulge. Mainly Xiyao, some Meng Yao/Xue Yang, background Wangxian.
Aftermath – Jiang Yanli kills Jin Guangshan in self defense when he tries to assault her. Without him around after the Sunshot Campaign, everything goes much better. Mostly focuses on the sibling relationships, but also has Xuanli, Wangxian, and a little light Xiyao and Chengqing.
The Lost Cause – Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao team up to murder Jin Guangshan. It’s more fun than it should be. Mainly gen, background Wangxian.
the cycle of regret – Lan Wangji gets stuck in a groundhog day loop of trying to save Wei Wuxian just before his death. Wangxian only.
Canon diverges after Wei Wuxian’s death:
picking up the pieces (WIP!) – Jiang Cheng is killed at the massacre of Nightless City instead of Jiang Yanli. She then convinces Lan Wangji to come live with her at Lotus Pier and raise their kids together. Actually fairly gen, Wangxian later.
The Way it Wasn’t – Jiang Cheng wishes that Wei Wuxian had never existed, only to find out that without him, they lost the war. Wangxian, Xiyao, Chengqing hints.
where do we begin (the rubble or our sins) – Wei Wuxian survives falling off the cliff, resurrects Jiang Yanli, and ends up with amnesia. Wangxian only.
Post canon:
the hardest part of ending (is starting again) – Wen Ning and Lan Xichen comfort each other after going through hell. Mainly gen, hints at future Ningchen, background Wangxian.
again, if you have any questions, either while reading the summaries or while reading any of my fics, feel free to ask me! <3

MDZS/GDC Chapter Summaries
So back...a while ago I made a post about things MDZS fandom really needs.  And from that post someone made a fantastic Guide to Chinese/pinyin terms.  And now I have my own contribution, a list of every chapter of the Mo Dao Zu Shi/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation novel along with summaries of what happens when.
Because I know as a writer I often want to look at a particular scene in canon to refresh my memory or check something, but it’s nearly impossible to remember what happens when due to the different chronologies in each version of the story.
So I spent the last couple weeks listening to the audio drama and skimming the novel and making notes.  Hopefully they are useful and understandable to more than just myself, but you can definitely see my prejudices.  Like entire chapters where it’s basically just “people talk...plot”  versus deep detail on Wangxian scenes.  Anyway, here it is, I hope it helps.

First Lines Meme
I was tagged by @veliseraptor and @attackfish! I don’t think I’ve publish many stories since the last time I did this, so I’m going to reach into my drafts for about half of these
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favourite authors!
1. Wen Ning had reassured them that no, Hanguang-Jun would not kill them, or beat them, or otherwise punish them. (WIP - Jin Ling vs. The Past #1)
2. It was Sizhiu that got him thinking. (WIP - Jin Ling vs. The Past #2)
3. Wei Wuxian knew he was very good with music. He knew he was stellar at memorization, he had a pitch perfect ear, and his rhythm never faltered. (WIP - Battle of the Bro-in-Laws)
4. “Please, I swear, I don't know anything,” the man whimpered. (WIP - Demonic Cultivator Mating Rituals Part 3)
5. Spring was little more in the air than usual for this time of year. (WIP - Break a Leg (Or Two))
6. The cut down her back burned and nauseated her with every twitch of her muscles – but she still reached out for A-Xian from the cradle of A-Cheng's arms (WIP - She Lives!)
7.  Jiang Cheng stomped up the stairs of the inn. (broken words, broken promises)
8. Don't let yourself be seen, Jin Guangyao had said. (Love in the Time of Necromancy)
9. “Dog!” he shouts, pointing. “Dog!” (Fearful Animals)
10. Asgard and Vanaheim had been sister realms, almost twins, allied since Buri's time. (Wolf Mother, Where You Been?)
11. Zuko had grown up in a palace. (Perfection is Overrated)
12. She had just been grumbling about math. (One Last Night)
13. Zuko never bent lightning. (Let it Flow Through You)
14. “Zu-ko. Zu-ko. Koooo.” (and we light ourselves and fire to keep warm)
15. The first time a minister calls Iroh “the prince”, Fire Lord Zuko stares at her blankly. (Call “Uncle”)
16. Loki nervously slicked back his hair and adjusted his armour. (The Sinking Feeling Anticipation)
17. Barry hadn't noticed Cisco tampering with the speed bazooka as they fought. (more than one truth)
18. There were days when the bitterness flooded her. (Caitlin and the Coma Boy)
19. “We have a problem.” (El Pollo Hijo)
20. It had not taken Loki long to get bored of being King. (WIP - Torture Loki: The Fic)
I don’t know if there’s much of a pattern. With some fics, I like to launch straight into a scene, especially if it’s humorous, or it’s a short fic and I need to straight into the action. If there’s a more melancholy tone, I seem to take it a bit slower and broader. There’s also quite a few fics where I start with dialogue, or implied dialogue. Overall, I usually like to start with some sort of action going on - or some action being implied.
Do I even know 10 authors on here to tag that haven’t been tagged already? Well I’ll go with @mikkeneko, @pennflinn, @gracenm, @missusgordo, @improbabledreams900, @royaltealovingkookiness, and @thelightofthingshopedfor
