#when the bar is so low that its just don't kill ppl

propaganda under the cut!
shen qingqiu:
Okay first a quick intro: Shen Qingqiu / Shen Yuan is the main character of SVSSS, and his deal is that he's a guy from the modern world who wakes up in the novel he read, in the body of one of the characters. Shen Yuan is his name in his original world, while Shen Qingqiu is the name of the character he became - that he uses for himself for most of the novel.
Now, what happened to him… The thing is, at the core of his woobification are his actual canon traits, but some fans really crank them up to the point where it becomes a disservice to the character. So you never know when someone saying "oh Shen Qingqiu is so oblivious" means "due to several intersecting factors Shen Qingqiu has some extremely specific blindspots regarding certain topics" (which is just true) or "haha Shen Qingqiu could get kissed by a man and still not realize that man has romantic feelings for him" (just one variation of the sentiment, but one i find particularly bewildering considering. in canon. a man kissing him was exactly what made Shen Qingqiu realize that man was actually in love with him. like my dudes the bar is low but its there!).
Stumbling into this second version in fic was funny a first few times, but now it's like… I genuinely can't tell whether any particular author is overplaying it for comedy, or genuinely believes the character is That dumb.
Also ppl often severely underestimate his power level. Like idk if that's because they compare him to the characters he often hangs out with, who are those genius top-of-the-world experts (despite him outpacing literally everyone else he ever fought against), or because of how he bungled his first-ever case (like, you know, two weeks after waking up in a whole NEW BODY, in a different world), or because he tends to downplay his own strength and also tries to avoid killing people… but like, this man took a technique that in the original was just "aesthetic and interesting" and developed it into something that could be super deadly within weeks, he's just not using it that way. And he also fixed og Shen Qingqiu's broken cultivation within the first few months of being in that body. So he's actually extremely talented and pretty strong, he just spends most of the book either nerfed by external factors (such as poison that disables his spiritual energy at random times) or surrounded by veritable powerhouses.
And this is for Shen Yuan-as-Shen Qingqiu. But the version that drives me completely up the wall is actually the portrayal of just Shen Yuan - in fanworks where he either never gets transported to the world of the novel, or wakes up as a different character. Because suddenly the traits that already get unduly amplified with Shen Qingqiu version become straight up caricature-like. He's not only oblivious to the extreme, he also gets painted as this completely naive soft babyboi (this is about a guy whose most well-known pre-transmigration canon trait is that he writes famously vitriolic rants about novels on the internet); plus, like, on the physical level, super frail and waifish which uh. wow. nice walking right back into the BL tropes the novel itself avoided?…… So yeah I'm super not keen on this portrayal. I know he doesn't appear as not-Shen Qingqiu version of himself in the novel, if we don't count the rant in the beginning, but like. please extrapolate from the character we actually have instead of writing this mega-woobie who shares nothing with the base version?
Terrible little bastard man who has a sad backstory but is actually genuinely a terrible person. Fans like to act like he is just a soft sad boi deep inside and make him lose all of his edge.
So the thing about Shen Jiu / og!Shen Qingqiu in canon is that we first learn of him as an unquestionably, almost cartoonishly villainous character. As in, he is literally a villain in the book our main character has been reading… before dying and waking up in the world of the book, as that very villain (hence the distinction of Shen Jiu being the "original" Shen Qingqiu, as our main character begins to use the name Shen Qingqiu for himself. Shen Jiu, however, is an old name that only the original has used). The original Shen Qingqiu that our main character knows is a serial child abuser in a teaching position, a murderer (killed his colleague, killed his old fiancee's entire family…), and a lecher (visited brothels and had designs on his female disciple).
Then, over the course of the novel, we learn more about Shen Jiu - in particular, that a number of things our MC "knew" about him were not true. He did not kill his colleague, but rather failed to save him, despite trying to; he killed his "fiancee"'s family because her older brother has abused him for years (and also, Shen Jiu was forced into agreeing to marry her), and also he only actually killed half of them (only men); he visited brothels because he only felt safe in the company of women, and he just went there to get a good night's sleep; and he only ever saw that female disciple he was accused of lusting after as a daughter. And in general, he had a horrible childhood, and was himself a victim of abuse.
However, not everything gets disproved. Shen Jiu still turned from a victim to perpetrator, abusing a child (coincidentally the protagonist of the og book) and trying to set him up to die/be killed several times. Canon is very clear on that point. The situation with Shen Jiu and the og book version of the protagonist is very much an illustration of cycles of abuse.
Also at a certain point, we meet the author of the in-world book, the one our MC was reading - who explains he scrapped Shen Jiu's tragic backstory because it would make him too controversial. Quoting from memory, something like: 'if you said he was a villain, he was also tragic; but if you said he was pitiful, he'd also done terrible things. All in all, a character like this was a hotbed for all kinds of fandom discourse.'
Prophetic fucking words.
Somehow, seeing all that, some 'fans' have decided to jump into a completely opposite direction: making Shen Jiu a poor little misunderstood meow meow who did nothing wrong ever and was a soft princess and totally was never mean to the protagonist ("the protagonist just has inflated sense of ego and misunderstood Shen Jiu's normal teaching as singling him out for abuse" was a take I had to see with my own two eyeballs. Theres btw an extra from Shen Jiu's pov where he laments that the fake manual he gave the kid has failed to horrifically kill him yet).
Which puts the rest of us in an awkward position of having to defend his canon assholery. Like, the whole point of this character is that he's complex! That he's both a villain and a victim! Reducing him to just one is doing him a disservice, and either extreme is equally incorrect! And this is something that happens with many similar characters, I know, but what boggles my mind about Shen Jiu's case in particular is that. it's spelled out. The whole deal with his character is spelled out in canon. And some people still go "oh so Shen Jiu was secretly the most morally pure and good character, got it". Like. how?????????????? ??? ?? ?????
noriaki kakyoin:
Uke-fied to the max so he can be shipped with jotaro lol
Ohmygod where do I even start. Kakyoin's the poster boy for twinkification and woobification of a canonically very capable, interesting (and not twinky at all) character who's so many things at once- a loyal friend, really smart, a bit of a weirdo, infodumping trivia at random times, quick-thinking in dangerous situations, reckless, polite and respectful, vengeful towards enemies but always kind to friends, depressed, determined and motivated in the face of mortal danger despite it all - even when he had the chance to leave the Stradust Crusaders and just come back to his normal life, he decided to stick with them. This decision eventually cost him his life since he got killed by Dio, the main villain. The fandom either calls him a cardboard with no personality (which is not true at ALL, where did that take even come from) or they downplay his canon badassery- Jotaro x Kakyoin shippers are often guilty of this along with twinkifying Kakyoin. The ship is fine, but they're way more interesting if you take into account their canon characterisation as huge weirdos who somehow work pretty well together- they're both different flavors of autistic that sometimes just so happen to align on the same wavelength.

choose violence ask game!
2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
i feel like a fish out of water here wow. i keep going through my faves and they all seem like they'd do both? like im thinking about one straight couple and even there things could get interesting but anyways
naoya from mr.unlucky is never doing either cause with the tempo at which kouta is moving they'd both die from old age before they ever get there
Tumblr media
masumi and ritsu from bokushoku both love their dynamic (and why wouldn't they, they seem to be having the most enjoyable sex ever) and they're never changing partners so they're defiinitely sticking to their roles (ig masumi could be curious cause yknow how ritsu is basically his only partner ever but i doubt ritsu would be down? and also if the end of the world didn't get them to try switching i don't think it's likely to happen)
Tumblr media
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
as i said, i take so many outcasts under my wing lol like the more hated he is, the more i empathise. like LM mark or even tonhon (i KNOW)
this question implies it's someone people are feel neutral/negative towards so i'll ignore my boy jiha from all the liquors though i haven't seen an ounce of love for him because i just think the show didn't get posted about much in general. he is cute, he keeps it real, he is the bestie the gives advice but actually sucks at relationships, low sense of self-worth - he's just perfect. and also those lips boyy he's so beautiful. anyways
Tumblr media
i kept this question for kim actually but now that i'm here i wonder if i should even bother. like people have had a long time to sort out their feelings.
this just kind of ties with my dislike(?) of porschay, people just ganged up on kim as if the way he acted wasn't an act of protection - a poor choice but coming from a good place nonetheless. in my eyes he's such an antisocial loser that he's not that much more mature than chay who, in some way, i'm sure could outsmart kim easily, not to mention manipulate him if necessary. so with the whole pathetic factor going on idk how at least the tumblr fandom didn't instantly get his pov. i saw so many threats against this guy even long after the finale had aired, some were like ''i get it but i still want to smash him with a hammer for hurting chay'' which ok fair ig if you love porschay i can see where the anger comes from. but still. kim has grown up around the mafia, learnt to always keep his guard up. he tries to solve a mystery all by himself except for the help of a bodyguard who, ultimately, works for his dad, not for him. who can he trust except for himself? he's in the entertainment industry, ppl are interested in him for his family, looks, money or his fame. what he can give them. when he ain't sniffing around and wrecking his brains, he's in the recording studio. that man does not know how to act around his crush, we know how he subtly he gets info out of chay or how he's delighted to see a wall plastered with his face. that man is pathetic, lonely, paranoid, he'd kill anyone who's a threat to chay instantly (>leaves like a dozen corpses in a bar similar to a cat bringing rats to its owner) but will wallow in misery, write a song and serenade him through a text. HE DOES NOT GET HUMANS. he went to that bar, got told off and stormed off, he is so clueless, somebody please help him.
i actually read plenty of posts on kim and that's why i feel strongly about him (thank you everyone who defended him in such articulate ways❤️) and i don't even like him that much!! i just need the hate train to stop
Tumblr media
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
i know what the question means but like i usually try to like ships, it's easier this way, no? lol so it's not really unwillingly..but i think haruka and rin is a good answer lmao
i was a haruka/makoto girlie for years but watching free! with friends made me realise the harurin appeal
Tumblr media
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
i thought i wouldn't have much to say here but omg i have to pick just one? skipping over the controversial ones, i'll have to go for hate for songs in bls lol
Tumblr media
i'll start off by saying a lot of my mutuals are of this opinion and i respect it <33 that being said - bro. i know they could be a bit much especially when the actors aren't that good or the song is a bit bland or if it just feels very out of place? i understand it's sort of become the norm to hate on these performances because '''bl boy whips out guitar'' is a fandom joke at this point. and people are so loud and proud about skipping every single scene with a song in it. but it results in takes like "omg why did win and team sing their confessions they sounded so bad, so off-key, i barely made it".. that's the point? they are overwhelmed with emotions, snot is running down their face, after months of inner turmoil they finally reach the point where they just have to let it all out and yeah, the song would sound much weirder if they played a studio version on top of the footage lmao (example: the autotune on top of akkayan's bday performance that was so horrendous it turned out funny)
it's not that i haven't been tempted to skip through a boring song. i'm not saying it's a baseless complaint. i just find the way it's expressed usually annoying.

I just gt into Milgram Project and its my new favorite thing. So far here is my line up'
Guilty:
Shidou - So, what I got from his song and vid is that he killed ppl so that he can play Frankenstein. He felt guilty about doing it but he still did it. And then the monster still went and died 🙄 chile anyways 😒
Mahiru - Y'all this woman is textbook crazy. There's no other way to splice it. Like she gives stalker vibes. The 'if you don't love me, you can't love anyone else'
Yuno - I originally that she was on some stalker type shit. So she was like a escort or something? I think she developed feelings for one of her customers and when they didn't reciprocate beyond being a customer she offed them
Innocent:
Futa - What I got from him was he's a gamer and spends a lot of time there bc the real world is filled with trash ppl. He is the shit in his game and kinda wishes he could wipe out the bad guys like in his game. He got the two worlds crossed and ended wiping out someone irl. He is not happy about some of the others being found innocent in the 1st trial. Which lines up with his views about justice. I feel like I may be off here but maybe there was someone he couldn't save or put on danger with his views and actions. I think he fears that he is just like the rest of the prisoners he sees as awful.
Kotoko - Blood for blood is a tale as old as time. Someone killed someone she loved and she went to kill them back. Same sis. 😏👏🏿
Haruka - Yeah, he was deemed guilty in the second round and I can't see how. He was mistreated for being different. That broke him. He just wanted to be loved by the people that should love him unconditionally... but ok 🙄
Mu - So, Mu was bullied something fierce and when she finally got a friend, for whatever reason she turns her back on Mu. 🙄😒 That is what I call a cunt move. But we'll see what happens in this 2nd Trial...
Unsure:
Mikoto - Poor baby def has a 'split personality' (apologies if the term is wrong, feel free to correct me). I think he deserves a mental hospital more than a prison but he definitely shouldn't be walking around in society if he can't keep that other side in check
Kazui: As much as I want to put the love of my life as innocent I don't really understand what went down in his video...? 😵‍💫 Like he and his wife drifted apart. Are the woman at the bar and his wife one in the same? I assumed he met his wife when she was at a low point in her life and they found live in a hopeless place. That or he a goddamn dirty cheat. And I really hope that's not the case 😭
Amane - I have no idea what her video is about. Like not even a vague idea... 🤷🏿‍♀️
~~
Do let me know what y'all think, whether you have something to add or a different idea entirely. Would love to see everyone else's thoughts on this.

I just saw a guide to writing but uh it sucks so I'm writing my own.
So from a hobbiest writer, here's my tips to writing good
1) Kill Your Inner Critic
Do it. With a knife. I dare you.
In all seriousness, being too hard on yourself gets you no where. If you're too scared to even start writing because you "need" to have certain skills, you won't get those skills!!! Something something "he was too afraid to fly so he never did land". Let yourself write badly!!! No one cares!!! Writing is a skill you have to learn by doing, studying the fundementals or whatever will only get you so far.
You will have weaknesses, and that's okay. I over think my plots of longer stories and my spelling is far from perfect. We're human. Make mistakes, learn, and keep going.
2) Read Other Stories
Read your favorite stories. See why you like them so much. Read popular and classic stories. See why they work and/or why they're still remembered. Read terrible stories. See why they don't work. Wonder how in the fuck this book not only got published but is considered a classic in its genera when the writer didn't even use fucking quotation marks or tags for dialogue meaning that you can't tell whats dialogue and what's not. Why the fuck did my proffessor make me read this, what the hell (based on a true story). Understanding what other writers did right and wrong from your prospective teaches you a lot. And personally, I feel a lot better about my stories knowing how low the bar is set sometimes.
Also reading fun. Gives you ideas. And would you trust a director who rarely watches movies? No? Think on why :)
"But what if I accidentally borrow from the story-" nothing is original anymore!!! You usually have to go out of your way to out right copy someone else! Keep tabs on your insparation if you're paranoid, but insparation is a good thing!!!
3) Take!!! Breaks!!!! Rest ya goof!!!
This was my biggest gripe with the post I saw earlier lmao. It said to write every day, even when its hard. To that I say BULLSHIT!
Write regularly, yes. You learn by doing, and so doing is how you retain that information.
But if you're burnt out or tired or just not feeling it? Rest!!! Forcing yourself to do your art is how you come to hate doing it!!! So let yourself take breaks!!! This applies to just about anything tbh, not just writing.
4) Write For Yourself
Write stories you want to read. It makes the process so much more enjoyable, trust me. Don't feel like you have to write about xyz just because it's currently trendy. If you wouldn't like reading about xyz, you probably won't like writing it and will burn out fast.
Write what you want to read. People who also wish to read it will slowly find it. Let yourself have fun.
5) Research is Still Good Though
You learn to write by writing, yes. But that doesn't mean taking classes, reading guide books, or seeing what advice ppl on the internet have is pointless.
Writing is also subjective though. Not only in "what I like is different from what you like" but also "what I do to make writing easier for me is different from what you do to make writing easier for you". Learn what you can, maybe someone else tried something you'd never think of! But if it doesn't work for you then it doesn't work for you.
Also research topics you want to cover but are unfamiliar with. Time periods, locations, desiease, hobbies, that stuff. Generally a good idea to know what you're gonna write about before you write it.
6) You Don't Need to Post/Publish Everything
Last but not least: do you not want to post a work? Then don't. You don't need a reason. It's okay to keep some works just to yourself or to a group of friends. Sometimes knowing no one else will see a certain work of yours is comforting, and makes it easier to work on said project. You don't owe the world your art.
Share what you want to share. If that means all your drafts, short stories, notes and finished peices? Okay. If that means litteraly nothing? Also okay. Your work is yours, do with it as you please.
